Mayors Report February and March have been extremely pleasant weather wise and the town has ex-perienced a good flow of tourists especially over the new Adelaide Cup long weekend and also as a result of the Motorhome convention in Mount Gambier. We hope all those people who have experienced Robe for the first time are now contemplating a return visit some time in the future.

Council has appointed an Acting CEO—David Beaton—whilst Rob Kay is on sick leave and annual holidays. David is no stranger to the area having been CEO of Nara-coorte Lucindale Councils. At this stage David will be in Robe until mid June.

After a couple of meetings the Industrial Relations sub-committee has negotiated a new salary structure for both the inside and outside work forces. These new pay rates were ratifies by the full council at its meeting on 14 March 2006. on behalf of Council I would like to thank both the inside and outside work forces for their input into the negotiations and their acceptance of the proposals put before them.

A Special Council Meeting has been called for Tuesday 28 March at 5.00pm to discuss and receive update regarding the progress of the marina. Council has invited the chairman of the Robe Marina Corporation Malcolm Kentish and its EO Peter Duffy to attend along with a representative of the Robe Professional Fishermen.

Following this meeting a workshop will be held to discuss rating options and to give the CEO and Works Manager toured the district on Sunday 12 March to view first hand some of the proposals for the budget.

The National Sea Change Task Force is a group of some 70 Councils around the coast of Australia. For the past several years it has been researching the “Sea Change” phe-nomenon of people migrating towards the coastal areas of Australia. A study by the University of Sydney over the past couple of years has highlighted the lack of Government help in planning for basic infrastructure—water, power, roads, schools, hospital etc. Robe Council has been a member of this Task Force since inception. Marching Power by How to bribe your way into prison! This book provides a great insight into the reality of prison life and offers a fascinating reflection on how society develops in the harsh-est of circumstances.

The true story of an Aussie backpacker who bribed his way into Bolivia’s notorious San Pedro prison……corruption, brutality and daily struggles for survival in an inside community where prison-ers run their own markets even down to prison cells being bought and sold…..when the eye of authority is looking elsewhere.

“Heritage” - By Judy Nunn. Fantastic Book!! A must read, especially for those that like to read and learn of Australia’s more recent history. Judy Nunn explores the migrant population that sought a new life, in Australia, to help build one of the nation’s greatest engineering feats ever: The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.

From the Treatment of Jews in Auschwitz, to the help by the Catholic Church in Italy for the organized escape by German SS, at the end of World War Two in Europe, each chapter of the novel leaves you intrigued by the Authors research and endeavor to keep you spellbound by the peoples struggle and spirit to survive, at all costs.

Judy Nunn’s best book to date!!!

Robe Golf Club Report Well here we are again at the start of yet another new season. Southern Ports Golf Week has been and gone. The results have been reported else-where so I will not include details here. Robe play-ers didn’t appear quite so prominent as last year but there are the breaks! The president as per tradition officially opened the new season by driving the first ball. What a beauty it was too, down the middle and long. Is this an omen for the coming season? It could well be as the Presidents’ trophy for opening day went to Graeme & Merle Clements. The day itself was not very kind weather wise with drizzle falling for some of the round. The last couple of groups were rained on and got saturated. However their spirits were not damp-ened. The small but se-lect field enjoyed the com-forts of the 19th afterwards.

Other winners for the month were: Tim Mort & John Burr

As I don't have any other news my report is short for this month. That’s all for now

Mt Benson Angling Club Update For our February 11 & 12 Competition many anglers chased the elusive fish on Saturday in very calm con-ditions, with a medium North West wind for no re-wards. Sunday saw two anglers pick the most pro-ductive beach being the gums with Frank & Robert Pitt weighing in Salmon, Mullet, and also Whiting and releasing 1x 73cm Mulloway. The heaviest fish win-ner for this competition was R. Pitt with a 2.8kg Salmon—Snapper and Salmon were also caught at Bishops Pate and Long Gully by non members. Dennis Williams, Ray Harris and Rob Pitt fished

700m past Third Ramp for our last Twilight Comp sponsored by Bushland Cabins, on 19th February. Bream seemed the go earlier for this comp with Ray landing 2 and Rob 1. A few small Mulloway and stingrays were hooked and re-leased. 7pm a rod bent over and Ray thought

Rob had another stingray on but the end result was a 6.2kg Mulloway. During February a club angler also landed a 15kg school shark and a 27kg Carpet shark out of competition. Bream have returned to the lakes system and click-ers seem to be the bait and whilst also on the beaches small blue bait the best. March 11 and 12 Competition saw one of the hot-test calmest days the club has had to enjoy for its season but only once bronze whaler shark and 1 Mullet were weighed in, both caught at Wrights Bay, but be prepared for some heavy 4 wheel drive work. Next Competition April 9 & 10 for the heaviest scale fish or shark lets all grab the rod and try - catch or not; hope to see you all at Mount Benson Tennis Club Hall - weigh in 11.30 to12/BBQ to fol-low.

Microwave Mess It is not necessary to scrub your microwave to re-move splattered food. Mix half a cup of white vine-gar, 1 cup of water and a tablespoon of bicarb in a bowl. Place in the microwave and cook so it boils for a couple of minutes. While still moist wipe the inside down with a damp sponge. This process not only cleans it sanitises as well.

Time to Fertilise

If there’s one time of the year when you get more benefit from fertilising your lawn than any other, it’s autumn. The days are getting shorter and the nights cooler. Dews are heavier, and the pattern of rainfall starts to be more fa-vourable to the needs of grass. Call us for free fertilizing with every new lawn cut.

Remember, today is the to-morrow you worried about yesterday.

A Snapshot of Adelaide Festival of Arts

Friday evening, walking from North Adelaide past St Peters Cathedral, over the bridge to the Festival garden with our sand chairs and picnic basket amongst of families sitting on the lawns—a perfect

setting for the opening of the Adelaide Festi-val of Arts. Huge painted balls floated above us, beautiful girls danced in the sky—the re-flection on the water and the trees flood lit changing colours. Beautiful music a very spe-cial occasion and sun set. Sunday: Church at the Cathedral then on to

breakfast at Government House garden to meet the “Authors” and celebrate the open-ing of “Writers Week”. A short walk to the space near pio-neer Women’s Walled Garden, where large mar-quees and plenty of chairs under the trees, we sat and listened and learnt about our authors their lives and why they write. A little possum waken from his sleep by all the clapping, entertained in the branches over head. How fortunate and privileged we are to live in this wonderful safe country.
