With spring now just around the corner,

we look forward to March break and the

12-Hours of Sebring in Florida. Please see

the poster for this classic from over 40 years ago on

the backpage. This year will be the 57th running of

the race, which, by many, is considered to be one of

the three toughest endurance races in the world. We

like to rent a home with pool in the Kissimmee area,

and then I get to escape for a few days to soak up

the atmosphere of the race track, while the family

does the theme park and pool side thing. When re-

ally lucky, I even get to drive, either in the supporting

Vintage Race or, a couple of times in the past, in

the main event. But even without competing there, a

Sebring visit in early spring does a car junkie good!

For those who can't make it down to Sebring, Speed

TV tends to show most of the race live, so, there is

your excuse for a repeat of the Daytona party.

Looks like we're going to have to make another trip

soon as well: The new Porsche Museum looks ab-

solutely fantastic, judging by the photos I've seen

on the internet. We have a couple of beautiful shots

from Porsche in this issue, including this month's

cover image, but do check this new Porsche land-

mark out on the net, if not in person, in the near

future. I only wish we had more space to show you

more of the great photos of the most gorgeous vin-

tage Porsches on exhibit there.

Now, speaking of trips, we start bringing you the

unusual tale of the journey of one of our own mem-

bers, Paul Harrison, as he brought a very unusual

car into this country only recently, after owning a

number of very unusual Porsches in the more dis-

tant past. This particular article was also featured in

Excellence Magazine but I thought we should reprint

it in these pages, as not all of our membership will

have had the opportunity to see the story in that

publication. Some of you may have also seen the car

in question at last year's UCR Concours.

At the same time as getting the generous permis-

sion to reprint the article on the No.12 RUF CTR, I

asked Pete Stout, the Editor of Excellence Magazine,

if they would possibly be willing to share some of

their excellent tech articles with us. It appears that

there may be a good possibility for this to happen,

which in turn would be great for our membership

and for the contents of our newsletter.

I'll keep you posted on this in future Ramblings - as

well as on what happened in sunny Sebring...

Our Socials are a great opportunity to meet fellow Porsche lovers and

exchange stories about recent experiences, such as a D.E. weekend

or a road trip in our favourite automobile.

We try to invite guest speakers to share their expertise and to hold

a small presentation at all of our Meetings. The locations for the So-

cials have been moving around over the past year and have included

some great new venues. Hopefully, this will make it easier for some

members to come out and enjoy the comraderie of the Meetings, as

they may be more convenient for them to get to. Our diverse locations

have also helped in breaking up the monotony, while offering a more

varied dinner menu.

For specific details, the UCR web site will be updated with write-ups,

addresses and driving directions. So, come on out and enjoy the eve-

ning with your fellow club members!

Meetings start at 6:30 pm on the second Tuesday of every month.

Dan Proudfoot makes note that he won't be so muchthe speaker at the March meeting at Arttrax, as an interviewer of Horst Kroll, who has a background rich in Porsche lore. In addition to winning the 1968 Canadian championship in the Kelly Porsche, and having raced Porsches at Daytona and Sebring and, as noted in the SCCA record book, he is the last champion of the fabled Can-Am series. Horst, in fact, worked as a young man in the Porsche shop at Zuffenhausen. Among other tasks, he maintained Butzi Porsche's personal car. So he has a lot to say.

We offer a wide variety of performance, aerodynamic and appearance upgrades for a range of premi-um import manufacturers including… Porsche…” This is our chance, boys and girls. From Hollywood mufflers to rear bumper extensions with continen-tal kits; purple passion lights to full fender skirts; coonskin tails to fuzzy dice; be ready on April 14 to arrange to make your Porsche truly unique. Canadian Tire has nothing on these guys. With free food and beverages, courtesy of Brad Meise and the rest of the crew at Pfaff Tuning, our April Social will be a merry occasion. Be certain to arrive cum credit cards. Something might strike your fancy, even if it’s as mundane as driving shoes, of which Pfaff Tuning offers an extensive range.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Martin TekelaUCR President

The economy is in recession, car sales are

down, temperatures are very cold and

the snow seems to be falling daily. What

better reasons do we need to look ahead opti-

mistically to the warmer months ahead? Es-

pecially since gasoline prices have declined by

about $0.70 per litre from last summer’s highs.

The PCA Zone 1 President’s meeting will be held

in Latham, NY on March 21 & 22. The National

DE program, presented by Pete Tremper, will likely

be of great interest to most of the regions. There

were concerns raised at the previous meeting that

overall attendance is falling at many DE events and

that it is becoming harder to attract Instructors.

Pete Tremper had proposed some changes to the

PCA DE program last fall and, after these meet-

ings, I’ll let you know if we should expect anything

to be different in the PCA DE program in the future.

Hazel and I are both looking forward to the UCR

Shannonville DE on August 22 & 23. It’s a great

place to really learn about car control and the im-

portance of guiding your car to exactly the right

place and at the right speed. In addition, you don’t

have to worry much about high-speed encounters

with concrete walls. There are also a number of in-

expensive hotels in Belleville, which is only about 15

minutes west of the track. There is also the pos-

sibility of live entertainment at the Saturday night

track dinner that is being organized by the UCR

Track team. Our track event will end at 5:00 PM,

but in past years, other groups have rented the

track immediately afterwards and some of these

drivers have provided us with many exciting spec-

tacles. Please register for this event early to avoid

the disappointment of your run group being full.

The UCR monthly social calendar is in full swing. The

March 10th event will be held at the Arttrax Gallery

in Port Credit and we expect to have Dan Proud-

foot, a Canadian auto journalist and Horst Kroll, the

former Canadian racing champion in attendance as

well. Director Richard Bain is doing a great job of

finding new venues for these monthly socials and if

any member has a recommendation for a venue to

host these events, please contact Richard directly.

Speaking of monthly socials, I recently received an

email from a member in London, Ontario asking if

we could hold a social in SW Ontario. She pointed

out that the UCR membership territory covers all

of Ontario from south of the Ottawa Valley to SW

Ontario. We would like to see more people partici-

pate in the UCR monthly socials. That is the rea-

son we started moving the venue location of each

month’s social. Our GTA venues normally attract

upwards of 60-70 members and guests. I doubt

that many of these current monthly social support-

ers would drive out of the GTA for an event, but I

would be willing to fully support any member initia-

tive to hold a monthly social outside of the greater

GTA. We would announce the event on the website,

in Provinz magazine and in an email blast to our

membership. If anyone is interested in organizing

a social evening for UCR members in your local

community, please contact Richard Bain or me and

we will help you to plan and promote your event.

THE WAY WE WERE...30 Years AgoThe newsletter was a brief single-page, folded. Two tech

sessions covering autocross prep and concours prep were

featured. The Social was held at the Boulevard Club with the

movie “24 Hours of Le Mans”.

20 Years AgoA reminder to book track dates promptly. Bruce Farrow was

DE chair and explained the program – two events at Mosport

and three at Shannonville. Mosport weekend was $125 in-

cluding Saturday dinner. Bill Wilcox announced a four-event

autocross series. The social moved to Casa Mendoza, which

still exists on the Lakeshore, along condo alley. At the Social,

we explained all you need to know about the DE program. Old

Phil White (we have two) was promoting Tire Tech, which mor-

phed into Shift Into Spring in later years. The 1988 financial

summary showed Provinz and DE to be positive contributors

and we improved retained earnings by $5k to $11k. Clearly,

the team managed by Marc Plouffe had done a great job.

15 Years AgoDesigner Karl Thomson added a splash of colour on the cover

and editor David Gaunt had the issue out in a timely fashion.

Ben Ciantar wrote about fuel injectors and Rupert Bramall’s

injector cleaning system. Mosport DE was featured ($175) and

the possibility of a UCR Club Race was raised, with a committee

being formed. Panorama’s Bill Oursler was to be guest speaker

at the Social at PCYC. Shift Into Spring was getting bigger and

was now held at the Canadian Exposition & Convention Centre.

Christopher Pfaff joined.

10 Years AgoFour DE dates at Mosport and one at Shannonville. We had

a new web site chaired by Peter Carroll. Helmut Brosz was

promoting his Spring Blossom Tour through Prince Edward

County. UCR was preparing to support the ’99 Parade Goodie

Store. The Greens were ’99 Parade trophy chairs. A press

release by Porsche AG said “Porsche is the most profitable

automaker at present”. UCR Ski Day was coming up.

We had such an phenomenal time last year, we are taking our Spring Tour back to the historic and acclaimed Benmiller Inn. The Inn is a

haven of charm, natural beauty and authentic country inn hospitality. In a sheltered, wooded valley on the banks of Sharpe's Creek lies a

nineteenth-century hamlet untouched by time. Into this tranquil scene, Benmiller Inn & Spa introduces only the very best of the modern

age - such delights as distinctive regional cuisines and an elegant spa.

Nestled in the idyllic rolling hills just one hour north of London and two hours from Toronto, The Benmiller Inn and Spa offers gourmet regional

cuisine, an array of luxurious amenities, and elegant accommodations, with the sound of Sharpe’s Creek rushing by and a resplendent view

of its shoreline in full bloom from many guest rooms.

We have an itinerary packed full of fun including breakfast Saturday and Sunday and fine dining Saturday evening (including Murder Mystery).

On Saturday morning we’ll show off our freshly polished ‘P’ cars at a concours event at 11:00 am at the Inn, before heading for our tour of

the beautiful farmland and lakeview landscape. Our tour will be organized by our local members this year, so we are excited about seeing

some new sites. When we return to the Inn, you’ll have time for a hike, spa treatment, swim or even siesta!

The last couple of years have been a blast at the spring tour. It’s a great way to meet fellow ‘P’ lovers from around the province… so please

join us. The registration information can be found below.

14 F E A T U R E

Stuttgart. This Wednesday at the headquarters of Dr. Ing. h.c.

F. Porsche AG in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen the new Porsche-

Museum was officially declared open. On the occasion of the

ceremonial act in the spectacular new building on the Porschep-

latz Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, Chairman of the Board of Porsche

AG, welcomed State Parliament President Peter Straub, the Prime

Minister of Baden-Württemberg Günther Oettinger, Interior Minister

Heribert Rech, the Lord Mayor of Stuttgart Dr. Wolfgang Schuster,

members of the Porsche and Piëch families as well as a further

200 invited guests. On Saturday 31st January the museum will for

the first time be opened to the public.

In his speech Wiedeking empha-

sized the particular significance

of the Porsche- Museum on the

site of the headquarters of the

Company: “This is our new busi-

ness card on the Porscheplatz. At

this meeting point, we welcome

our international customers as

well as numerous people from all

over the world who themselves

may not drive a Porsche but are

nonetheless fascinated by our sportscars. While the bold architec-

ture of the building reflects the individuality, self-confidence, and

orientation towards the future of Porsche itself, the exhibition with

the turn-key sportscars from the Museum on Wheels, which are

always ready to spring into action, breathes plenty of life into the

Company's history.” The head of the Board also announced: “We

will not only use the museum as an exhibition, but also as a com-

munication platform – as a permanent, integral part of the ongoing

dialogue which Porsche conducts with the public.”

On its 5,600 square meters of exhibition space, the modern build-

ing provides space for approximately 80 historic vehicles and more

than 200 carefully arranged small exhibits from the Company’s

history. Spacious conference areas are available for events, includ-

ing access to an impressive roof terrace. The exclusive restaurant

“Christophorus” integrated into the exhibition, adds to the assort-

ment of haute cuisine in Stuttgart.

Furthermore, the museum bun-

dles the entire historical spectrum

of the sportscar manufacturer

with its Historical Archive in one

central location. And the experts

in the glazed museum workshop

will ensure that the exhibition ve-

hicles not to mention the historic

vehicles of customers are kept in

impeccable condition.

Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche

AG, emphasized the task of the sportscar manufacturer: to remem-

ber the founding personalities of the Company and to keep the spirit

of their work alive: “My grandfather and my father were passionate

automobile pioneers, engineers, and entrepreneurs.

Their life’s work and everything that their successors successfully

made of this and further developed from it, is documented here”,

said Porsche. With the opening of the new museum, the Stutt-

gart Company has fulfilled its obligation of preserving the dream of

sports driving and to pass it on to future generations.

For Uwe Hück, Chairman of the Company Works Council of Porsche

AG, the new building not only represents part of its identity, but

also the motivation and commitment for all its employees: “This

museum should become a part of Porsche culture – a culture of

esteem amongst employees, a culture of humanity, a culture of

employer and employee alike working together as well as a culture

of honest and open contact with one anotherr”, said the Head of

the Works Council.

Prime Minister Oettinger particularly praised the special char-

ismatic radiance of the Porsche-Museum which would shine far

beyond regional boundaries: “The history of Baden-Württemberg

as the cradle of automotive engineering is closely entwined with

the biography of the designer Ferdinand Porsche. All of the things

which had their origin in his fountain of creativity, and which were

continued by his son Ferry, are shown in this unique collection of

sportscars which can be displayed to the public in its full extent for

the first time. This exhibition is a reflection of the Swabian art of

engineering that has given the region a worldwide reputation.”

After a walk through the new building on the Porscheplatz Lord

Mayor Dr. Schuster’s verdict was: “This is a big hit for Zuffenhaus-

en. The state capital has gained, in the form of the new Porsche-

Museum, an additional, magical magnet for automobile fans from

all over the world. At the same time the region can also add another

attractive address for a wide variety of events. In this way Stuttgart

becomes a metropolis of the automobile – and one that everyone

can enjoy.”

The museum, designed entirely in white with its exhibition area

resting on only three single supports that as a result, appears to be

hovering, was regarded as a sensation in professional circles dur-

ing its three-year construction period due to its bold architecture.

Roman Delugan from the Viennese Architects' Practice Delugan

Meissl Associated Architects, whose design won the competition

in January 2005, was determined from the very start to put the

museum's visitor at the very centre of things: “Architecture should

not just be seen as another building, but should have an effect on

the mind and body of human beings. This museum should make

the Porsche cosmos a palpable reality for each person.”

The exhibition concept of the Stuttgart museum designer Professor

HG Merz deliberately dispenses with the idea of a staged theme

world with show effects and instead lets the sportscars speak for

themselves. “Exhibits of this quality need no elaborate packaging”,

stresses Professor Merz. “In Zuffenhausen they stand like sculp-

tures in a white gallery. Against these reduced surroundings, the

visitor can be alone with the vehicles and with his or her own per-

sonal feelings.”

Porsche is expecting at least 200,000 visitors per year. Even in

the previous museum on the works site, which could barely ac-

commodate 20 exhibits, 80,000 guests a year would turn up. Al-

together the historic collection of Porsche AG encompasses a fleet

of 400 racing and sportscars. Since almost all exhibition vehicles

still take part in historic racing events, the rare items on show in

the “Museum on Wheels” are constantly being changed. Apart from

anything else, this make repeated visits all the more fascinating for

regular guests.

The new Porsche-Museum is open daily as from the 31st January,

except on Mondays, from 9 to 6 p.m.. Adults pay 8 euros admission

(discount: four Euros). Children up to the age of 14 get free admis-

sion when accompanied by an adult.

Stuttgart. With a hard-fought victory at the 24 Hours of Day-

tona, Porsche has again lived up to its role as the most

successful manufacturer in the history of the long distance

classic in Florida. On the Daytona International Speedway, David

Donohue (USA), Darren Law (USA), Buddy Rice (USA) and Antonio

Garcia (Spain) won the 47th running of the time-honoured Grand-

Am Series season-opener with the Porsche-Riley of Brumos Rac-

ing. After a nerve-wracking finale, they secured the 21st overall

victory for Porsche by an extremely slim margin of just 0.167

seconds. In the GT class, Joerg Bergmeister (Germany), Patrick

Long (USA), Andy Lally (USA), RJ Valentine (USA) and Justin Marks

(USA) won with their TRG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and, with this,

rounded off the successful start of the new motorsport season

for Porsche.

“This is an amazing result for Porsche and the best confirmation

of our customer racing programme and the intensive technical

support that we give our teams at the race track,” said Porsche

head of motorsport, Hartmut Kristen. “The last Daytona victory

for Porsche was six years ago and it’s quite remarkable that then

principally the same 911 engine was powering the winning car

that is now in the Daytona Prototype of Brumos Racing. There’s

nothing like a six-cylinder boxer engine.”

Manning the second Porsche-Riley fielded by Brumos Racing,

Hurley Haywood (USA), Terry Borcheller (USA), Joao Barbosa

(Portugal) and JC France (USA) secured third place. However,

the Grand-Am premiere for Penske Racing and Porsche did not

run as successfully. Timo Bernhard (Germany), Romain Dumas

(France) and Ryan Briscoe (Australia) finished sixth after a strong

performance. Their start showed promise: After narrowly missing

out on pole position in qualifying, Timo Bernhard didn’t hesitate in

planting his vehicle at the front after just two laps.

In the first third of the race, the Penske and Brumos prototypes

dominated, leading 207 of 261 laps. After eight hours, Brumos-

pilot Joao Barbosa headed the field in the #59 Porsche-Riley.

During the night, the Porsche pit crews didn’t have much to do:

Tyre change and refuel – complete routine for the well-trained

mechanics. After 16 hours, the front-running Penske pilot Ryan

Briscoe handed his car over to Romain Dumas. But strong compe-

tition from the many big names from the American IndyCar Series

and NASCAR scene upped the pressure. At 8.55am on Sunday

morning, the quiet was shattered in the Penske pits: The #16

Porsche-Riley had to be pushed into the garage with a broken

driveshaft. Repairs took 26 minutes and cost 15 laps. But it was

not the last setback on this sunny Sunday in Florida: A gearbox

change threw Romain Dumas even further back into the field.

The Porsche Riley of Penske Racing, with Timo Bernhard, Ryan Briscoe, Romain Dumas, finished sixth.

“We took off from the first row, drove

the fastest lap and led for most of the

laps,” said Timo Bernhard, winner of the

2003 race. “Still, it’s disappointing that

it wasn’t enough to win today. But with

regard to the championship, our sixth

place is worth a lot.” Romain Dumas

added: “We know that we can match

the pace of the regular front-runners.

That’s the most important thing.”

After the retirement of the #16 vehicle,

hopes of many Porsche fans lining the

Daytona International Speedway were

now resting on the Brumos Racing

prototypes. After a few years without

much success, the Jackonsville-based

Brumos team, run by one of America’s

oldest Porsche dealerships and sup-

ported by Hurley Haywood as one of

the world’s most successful long dis-

tance pilots, lived up to all expectations

at their home race. In a thrilling and

dramatic final phase, pole-setter Da-

vid Donohue in the #58 Porsche-Riley,

first overtook Juan-Pablo Montoya in a

Lexus-Riley of Team Ganassi and suc-

cessfully fended off all attacks from

the ex-Formula 1 pilot. At the finish

line, Donohue could not hold back the

tears: 40 years after his father Mark’s

win here, he could now celebrate his

Daytona 24 Hour success.

“We did our home work, we completed

3,000 miles of testing in Daytona and

really did all preparation to be able to

win this race,” said David Donohue.

“We were far off any big wins over the

last years but our team never gave up.

Our goal was to win. That we reached

this goal against such strong competi-

tion from Penske and Ganassi makes

this victory even sweeter. It’s a huge

day for Brumos and Porsche.”

Porsche also proved unbeatable in the

GT class, with the 911 GT3 Cup claim-

ing a clear triple victory. “Right at the

start of the race we landed two laps

behind through no fault of our own,

but were able to catch up again,” said

Joerg Bergmeister after claiming the third Daytona win of his ca-

reer. Team mate Patrick Long added: “We didn’t experience one

technical problem over the entire race. I’m sure that was a crucial

factor in winning.”

In the second TRG-run 911 GT3 Cup, Emmanuel Collard

(France), Richard Lietz (Austria), Ted Ballou (USA), Tim

George (USA) and Spencer Pumpelly (USA) occupied sec-

ond place. “We had a clean race without any collisions and

any repairs. That’s the only way to reach the podium,” said

Richard Lietz. Emmanuel Collard believed: “Our car was

really simple and comfortable to drive. The positions were

settled early on in the race. Double victory for TRG – it

hardly gets better than this.” Sascha Maassen (Germany),

Patrick Pilet (France), Phillip Martien (France) and BJ

Zacharias (USA) took the chequered flag third with the 911

GT3 Cup of Wright Motorsports. “Our car ran perfectly. I’ve

never worked with this team before and still we secured

a podium – this is a result to be proud of,” said Patrick

Pilet. Sascha Maassen was also satisfied with third place.

“Our goal prior to the race was to reach the flag. That we

climbed the podium is due to the fact that no-one in our

team made a single mistake.”

Hartmut Kristen was not only delighted with the superb re-

sults for Porsche, but also with the brilliant performance of

his drivers. “This weekend,” said the Porsche motorsport

boss, “without exception, all nine works drivers as well as

our two juniors did a world-class job.”

F A C T S A N D F I G U R E SThis is the Grand American Sports Car Series:

In the year 2000, the Grand American Rolex Sports Car

Series (abbr.: Grand-Am Series) replaced the United States

Road Racing Championships. For the 2009 season, twelve

races are contested in the USA and Canada. A traditional

highlight of the season is the 24 Hours of Daytona. Most

races run over a distance of 250 miles.

The grid is made up of two different vehicle categories: Day-

tona Prototypes and GT vehicles. With one exception, both

categories race together but are separately classified.

Daytona Prototypes (DP): Special manufacturers, like Riley, sup-

ply the vehicle chassis. To ensure equal chances for all, large

manufacturers are not permitted to enter their own team, but

may supply engines. Two Porsche teams, Penske Racing and

Brumos Racing, compete with the Porsche 3.99-litre six-cylinder

fitted in a Riley chassis. In the Daytona Prototype specification,

the engine delivers ca. 510 hp. Minimum weight of the vehicle

is 1,021 kilograms.

Grand Touring (GT): The GT class is similar to the FIA GT3 class,

where the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is one of the most successful

contenders. Equality of chances is attained through tyre size, rev

limitations and weight. The minimum weight is between 1,043

and 1,270 kilograms.

A balanced starter field ensures thrilling racing with tough fights

for positions and many overtaking manoeuvres. Porsche has won

the GT championship seven times in nine years, most recently in

2007 with Dirk Werner at the wheel of a Farnbacher Loles Racing

911 GT3 Cup, and with this is one of the most successful manu-

facturers in the Grand-Am Series. Porsche works driver Joerg

Bergmeister claimed the Prototype class title in 2006.

NUMBERHOW THE ONLY LEGALLY LICENSED RUF CTR IN NORTH AMERICA GOT HERE

THE ADVENTURES OF UCR MEMBER, PAUL HARRISON – PART 1Story and Photos by Ian Kuah, Reprinted with permission from Excellence Magazine

It’s the kind of thing that kills interesting cars. Tiny Ruf Au-

tomobile had built just 29 examples of its 213-mph CTR

from bare shells before new emissions regulations took

effect in Germany. Looking for an open window after the door

had been closed, Ruf built more CTRs by converting 911 Car-

rera 3.2s already registered before 1990. Although in the end

there is no difference in their appearance or performance,

to purists, the first 29 cars with their unique Ruf chassis

numbers are worth more than the 25 converted CTRs with

Porsche VINs.

Thanks to the

legendary status

of the original

“Yellow Bird” test

car, both kinds of

CTRs are scat-

tered all over

the world. The

majority are in

Germany, Austria,

France, Belgium,

S w i t z e r l a n d ,

and the UK, but

a small hand-

ful live in Japan

and Bahrain. One

even made it all

the way to Gua-

deloupe. Unfortu-

nately, more onerous crash safety and emissions regulations

meant no CTRs would legally enter North America. Until now.

In July, 2006, Canadian Porsche enthusiast Paul Harrison

fulfilled his dream by successfully bringing No. 12 of the

29 original CTRs to Canada. Says Harrison: “The CTR is my

last act of automotive insanity! Over the years, I missed

three opportunities with rare and significant Porsches. So

when I was pre-

sented with the

chance to own

an original CTR,

I grabbed it with

both hands.”

Paul had bought

and sold the

Porsches he’s

referring to in

the years he

spent in Ger-

many. He went

over in 1973

with his brother,

who was in the

Canadian mili-

tary. Paul’s plan was to go for a three-month holiday, but he

ended up staying nearly eight years! That meant he had to

get a job, so he took up the post of civilian payroll manager

for the Canadian Forces Exchange services. His base was an

hour and a half from Stuttgart, so the Porsche fascination

he acquired as a boy, long before his ownership of a 1961

356B Super 90 in 1968, proved easy to fulfill.

“I soon bought a 1973 911S 2.4,” says Paul. “A four-cam

356A Carrera GT from Manfred Freisinger was next.” “The

GT’s bodywork was a bit rough, but it had a 904 motor and

was very fast. I drove it in a couple of slaloms and sold it back

to Manfred after two years. He knew where a lot of interest-

ing cars were, and, in those days, long before the classic car

boom, old Porsches like these were relatively cheap.” Sur-

prisingly, it wasn’t the S or GT Paul regrets selling.

“The first of the three cars I regret selling came my way in

1975 through a Porsche enthusiast in France whom I knew,”

he begins. “He had an Abarth Carrera and he knew where

a similar car was for sale. The seventh Abarth built was for

sale in Belgium, as the owner had turned his attention to

boats. It had been the subject of an amateur restoration and

came with two spare engines. The car and spares cost me

just U.S. $2,000 and I sold it on to Jürgen Barth who in turn

sold it to someone in Essen as a project.”

The second rare Porsche to pass through Paul’s hands was

a 1967 911R he saw in Auto Motor und Sport’s classifieds.

Paul called the Swiss owner and made an appointment to

go and see it at Jo Siffert’s garage, which was run by his

the four auxiliary driving lights, two on the bonnet and two

under the headlamps, the four round taillights, and the twin-

plug motor.” Inside, he found two boxes behind the seats

for stowing helmets, Dymo labels on the dash identifying

the various switches, and a tachometer redlined at 7800

rpm. He bought the 911R, and Barth established it was the

car Gerard Larrousse used to win the Tour de France and the

Tour de Corsica in 1969. Marvels Paul: “To think I drove this

great, rally-winning Porsche around Germany on Canadian

military plates!

In one of my acts

of great stupid-

ity, I sold it two

years later. I paid

around $9,000

and thought I

was making a

killing when a

friend of Kerry

Morse gave

me $25,000 in

1979. It was

eventually sold

on to Miles Col-

lier, who wanted

it for his pri-

vate museum in Naples, Florida. That car is easily worth

$500,000 today.”

And the third car he regrets selling? A 1970 911 S-T works

rally car. Recalls Paul: “It was a bit of a mess when I got it in

1977. It had been rally-crossed and damaged by an engine

bay fire. Also, the front bumper was missing and the rear

frame was damaged. But it had its original twin-plug motor.

The thing that really sold me on the car was the original KFZ

brief document, which showed its first owner was Porsche

AG. After some further investigation, I ascertained that it was

Björn Waldegaard’s Monte Carlo-winning car!” Paul sold the

S-T to a young German doctor when he returned to Canada

in 1980. Big changes were afoot. Remembers Paul: “I got

married in 1983 and my daughter was born in 1988, so it

was not until 1993 that I got back into the Porsche world,

this time with a 911T.” Paul

had had time to think about

his experiences —and his

three brushes with incred-

ible Porsches steeled him

to the point where he would

not make such a mistake

again. After retiring in June,

2002 at the age of 56, he

would look for a Porsche

worth keeping. It was time

to make up for his years

without one.

Ironically, it would not be

a Porsche that would fulfill

his goals. An introduction to

Alois Ruf came about when Paul was talking to a friend,

Eric Lister, about building a 3.0-liter lightweight 911 hot rod

based on a 1973 911T. Eric had known Ruf for 20 years and

had always told Paul that Ruf made the ultimate Porsches.

Paul was about to find out for himself: “My family and I went

over to Europe for a vacation in June, 2003 and we visited

Porsche and Mercedes. Eric arranged a visit to Ruf, where

“But, when I did the numbers on what the 911T would cost

built to the specs I wanted, I realized going down the Ruf

avenue was the most sensible option in the long run.”

By now, it was Summer of 2004 and Paul was scanning Ruf’s

website to see what used cars were being advertised. Lo

and behold, the 12th of the

original CTRs was for sale.

Says Paul: “It was a one-

owner 1989 car finished in

VW’s Tornado Red with a

black interior and a six-speed

manual gearbox. At the time,

it had 88,194 kilometers on

the clock, which sounds like

a lot, but the owner had used

it frequently early on and then

much more sparingly after-

wards. At 65,000 kilometers,

he missed a shift and over-

revved the motor, requiring a new crankcase, connecting

rods, pistons, and other parts. Ouch!

Paul wasn’t sure he would buy the car, but was committed

enough to fly over to Germany in early 2005 to see it. While

he was at Ruf, the workshop was restoring Number 29.

To be continued in the April issue of Provinz…

27

we were treated incredibly well. I had no idea at the time that

I would become a customer!”

Alois Ruf arranged for Hans-Peter Lieb, his factory test driver

and workshop manager, to take Paul and his daughter for a

test drive in Yellow Bird. Says Paul: “I was elated but also

scared to death, as he did

not waste any time getting

to 300 km/h! Of course, my

daughter loved her ride. I had

been aware of the CTR Yellow

Bird and its Ehra Lessien top-

speed record since the story

in Road & Track in 1988. To

my mind, it is the most iconic

non-factory 911 and appeals

on so many levels. I particu-

larly like the narrow body and

the fact that it is not extrava-

gant looking.”

Eric bought a 964-based RCT and Paul helped him get it

through Canadian customs and unload it from the container.

In the process, the pair continued to talk about Paul’s plan to

build up the 911T. “Why don’t you buy a Ruf car?” Eric asked

Paul. “I thought it would be too much money,” says Paul.

Driver’s DreamS H A R E T H E J O U R N E Y

A NEW ROAD IN HISTORY…Spring around the corner, I have decided to create new memories

this motoring season, stepping out of the box so to speak…

In reading a recent story in The Toronto Star by Jim Kenzie who had

visited the newly-opened Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, he quoted

our former Prime Minister William Lyon McKenzie speaking about

Canada, “too much geography and not enough history…” Well, we

have an abundance of open road on which to create history… with

another motoring season about to begin. As we remove the last ves-

tiges of winter, putting the snow scraper away for the season, waiting

to book the Porsche with Franz and his merry men to ready it for a

season of touring and

DE days. These are a

highlight of fast, safe

controlled driving and

a real learning curve

of using my Porsche

and its design excel-

lence on the track.

Back to the topic at

hand… creating new

memories. Let’s look

at past history, the

fifteenth of March or,

as commonly known,

the Ides of March,

was made infamous

by William Shake-

speare in Julius Cae-

sar, when Julius last

uttered those famous

words, “Et tu, Brute” and history was made. Prior to which, the Ro-

mans celebrated on the Ides of March, a festive day dedicated to the

god Mars – a Roman war god and lover of Venus and worshipped

by the Roman legions. It would seem Mars was a busy guy and, as

father of the founder of Rome (Romulus), it is said that all Romans

are descendent from Mars. And oh, March was named for Mars. This

guy must have really been something.

Through history, celebrations during the month of March are in abun-

dance. For example, the Hash House Harriers, an international group

C O L U M N

of non-competitive running, social, and drinking clubs, organize an

event known as a Hash or Hash Run, with participants calling them-

selves Hashers. The Ides of March are celebrated every year by the

Rome Hash House Harriers with a toga run in the streets of Rome, in

the same place where Julius Caesar was killed.

Another celebration, held halfway around the world, gives substance

that the unofficial American royal family, the Kennedy’s, or even the

present day “royals”, the Obama’s, are not the first American roy-

als, due to the celebration of Prince Khi Day in Hawaii. His day is

celebrated annually on March 26, to mark his birthday. Prince Jonah

Khi Kalaniana’ole, was heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawaii,

and later territorial

delegate to the United

States Congress. It

is one of only two

holidays in the United

States dedicated to

royalty, the other being

Hawaii's King Kame-

hameha Day on June

11.

Moving along on cel-

ebrations, March's

birthstone is aquama-

rine and bloodstone.

They mean courage…

something you’ll need

if you missed Valen-

tine’s Day a month be-

fore. History steps in to

save us yet again!

White Day, celebrated in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, happens

one month after Valentine’s Day, March 14.

In Japan, Valentine's Day is observed by females who present

chocolate gifts (either store-bought or handmade), usually to a male,

as an expression of love. The handmade chocolate is usually pre-

ferred by the receiver, because it is a sign that the receiving male

is the girl's "only one". On White Day, the converse happens: males

who received a "honmei-choco" [chocolate of love] or "Giri-choco"

[chocolate of courtesy] on Valentine's Day are expected to return the

favor by giving gifts, usually more expensive. Traditionally, popular

White Day gifts are cookies, candies, white chocolate, marshmal-

lows as well as jewelry, lingerie, and stuffed animals. Sometimes the

term sanbai gaeshi (literally, "thrice the return") is used to describe

the generally recited rule that the return gift should be two to three

times the cost of the Valentine's gift. (Can you believe this? Really,

I’m not making this up!)

Oh, the underlying truth of all this is that White Day was first cel-

ebrated in 1978 in Japan. It was started by the National Confection-

ery Industry Association as an "answer day" to Valentine's Day on

the grounds that men should pay back the women who gave them

chocolate and other gifts on Valentine's Day. In 1977 a Fukuoka-shi

confectionery company, Ishimura Manseido had marketed marsh-

mallows to men on March 14, calling it Marshmallow Day.

Soon thereafter, confectionery companies began marketing white

chocolate. Now, men give both white and dark chocolate, as well as

other edible and non-edible gifts, such as jewelry or objects of sen-

timental value, or white clothing like lingerie, to women from whom

they received chocolate on Valentine's Day one month earlier. If the

chocolate given to him was giri choco, the man as well may not be

expressing actual romantic interest, but rather a social obligation.

But the real home run in history for March is to celebrate all of our

women Porsche club members and drivers on International Women’s

Day, March 8, a global celebration for all the achievements of women

everywhere.

Started as a political event, the holiday blended in the culture of

many countries. In some celebrations, the day lost its political flavour,

and became simply an occasion for men to express their love to the

women around them in a way somewhat similar to Mother's Day and

St. Valentine's Day mixed together.

The International Women’s Day is also celebrated as the first spring

holiday, as in some countries the first day of March is considered the

first day of the spring season.

Now that we’ve come full circle on the historical celebrations during

the month of March, with plenty of gas for creating new memories,

time to put the brakes on for another lap of Drivers Dream. If you

have ideas, comments, questions, lifestyle topics – or recipes! – to

PORSCHE ANNOUNCES NEW SPORTS EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR 911 CARRERA AND TARGA 4Special Exhaust Gives Powerful Sound at the Touch of a Button

MISSISSAUGA - January 26, 2009 - Submitted by Laurance Yap

The engineers of Porsche AG, Stuttgart, have developed a new

sports exhaust system for the latest generation of the 911,

available as an option on new models as of February 2009.

This special exhaust gives the customer the opportunity to adjust

the 911’s unique sound to their personal preference; at the touch

of a button, the exhaust system switches over to a more sporting

and emotional sound.

The new sports exhaust system is made of modified stainless-steel

main silencers and stands out through its two uniquely-styled dual

tailpipes. The heart of the system is an exhaust flap on each main

silencer activated by the engine’s electronic control system, which

switches over to a more sporting sound. The system is activated

by a separate button on the centre console, varying the sound of

the exhaust as a function of engine load, road speed and engine

speed.

In Canada, the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is

$3,410. Starting in April 2009, Porsche will also offer a Tequipment

version as a retrofit part.

Sharing Hibernation thoughts…By Renate Weidner, UCR Member at Large [and 2008 UCR

Enthusiast of the Year]

Our P-cars are hibernating in

their likely quite luxurious win-

ter quarters. With both oil and

gas tanks topped up, tires on cush-

ions, blanket wrapped around, heat

on, they are one of the most cared for

and spoiled car creatures on earth. But

then we know it’s all worth the effort,

since they are such good-looking, well

performing, appreciative, enthusiastic

and unique summer companions for

us. They need their hibernation time to

be ready and rested for the coming DE season.

Ontario has been blessed with tons of snow and the ski season is

in full swing. Belonging to a ski club with lots of organized trips,

there is urgency almost similar to the track season, not to miss a

unique day out there.

Nevertheless, I had a very hard time to resist Ernie’s suggestions

to try out Sebring in January, go to VIR in February, Road Atlanta in

March, and so on. It is so outrageously tempting to just say “yes”

and worry about the bills later. I have the problem of not owning a

P-car I wish to track and therefore rent a track car from Ernie. So

when you add up the transportation costs, the leasing costs, the

track fee, the flight and hotel etc., it works out to a sizable sum for

a 2 or 3 day weekend.

Instead, I decided to remain true to the seasons. You get the idea:

Save eating peaches and cherries for the summer time and stick

to oranges, apples and bananas for now. I had my skis waxed,

gear collected and have already enjoyed a number of tremendous

weekends at cross-country as well as alpine ski places.

The car I am driving through the ice, slush and snow-covered high-

ways and bi-ways is an Audi 4S Quattro, 3.2 L, with amazing Con-

tinental snow tires. I must confess, it has performed miraculously,

tracking as if on rails. There was not one sway or sideways swing

during the most vicious ice and hail storm one recent weekend, re-

turning from Ottawa. Very sure-footedly we cruised by the numer-

ous cars that landed in the ditch. Not that this would stop my pining

for a C4 winter Porsche with a roof rack and 4 snows. And that will

be, must be, the next step after the Audi lease expires.

You guessed right: She is a hopelessly addicted P-lady and already

consumed with thinking about the coming track season. I signed

up for all 2009 UCR offered DE events, I am allowed in, including

a whole new track for me this year: Shannonville. New tracks are

exciting and challenging. Hopefully I can find Shannonville some-

where on the web for practice before I put the actual wheels down

onto it.

But last and not least, we should not

forget about the UCR Fun Runs. Fun

Runs are tremendous; they bring to-

gether members from all walks of life

and interest groups. Nothing is more

relaxing than participating in a leisure-

ly drive through beautiful rural coun-

tryside. And I love the awesome sight

of a long row of parked Porsches in all

colours, shapes and styles in front of

an Inn or at a scenic viewing area. That

alone is worth the outing. I am thinking

of organizing one of those fun runs for

this summer and will keep you posted.

…just sharing some thoughts… if you have any ideas or sugges-

Those who know me well are aware

that I’m a big fan of the BBC series

Top Gear. I’m often sporting a shirt

that claims “I am the Stig” and recapping

the latest antics on their TV show with

friends. I’ve always been impressed by

the Brits’ acceptance and promotion of

motorsports in general. Back when the

Speed Channel was Speedvision and

not the NASCAR channel, it was filled

with shows about the Legends of Motor-

sports, the British Touring Car races and

everything from Hill Climbs to Lawn-

mower Racing. It filled countless winter

Sundays with the Brits’ love of everything

fast. They are a people with a long mo-

toring history.

North Americans by contrast don’t have

a long history of anything. Most of you

won’t know that the reason the Brits

drive on the left is because they were

part of the Roman Empire. Roman sol-

diers always passed on the left to keep

their swords between them and those

passing them. As Britain colonized the

world they continued to pass on the left.

Now that’s history. Britain is covered

with small local racetracks where Brit-

ish men and women take their stripped

out stock sedans and go lapping on the

weekends. It’s a family affair there with

fathers teaching their sons and daugh-

ters to tinker under the hood as part of

their upbringing.

Here, by contrast, you could ask 100

people in the GTA where Mosport is

and you’d get the same answer from

everyone. “I don’t know.” Cars in North

America seem to be either all style or all

function but without any real substance.

Americans buy or lease them, drive them

for 3 or 4 years and then trade them in

for another one. No commitment and no

history. The fact that most North Amer-

ican cars are crap, just adds to our

distain. The largest selling car in North

America is a truck. That should tell you

something about why the big three are in

so much trouble.Dave Osborne Track Chair

What sets Porsche owners apart from the general motoring public

is our fondness for these cars. Even on a show like Top Gear where

the Jeremy Clarkson mocks the sameness of all the Porsche mod-

els, they still use the Porsche 911 as the benchmark for their sports

car tests. “The Enzo is faster but costs four times as much as the

911, the Aston is prettier but doesn’t handle as well as the 911.”

These comparisons showcase the main attributes of the Porsche

cars. They’re not just the biggest bang for the buck, but we love

these cars. We have a commitment to them. I have an older model

Porsche that probably has more new parts than my newest vehicle.

My daily driver gets washed every time it rains hard, but you don’t

see my Porsche dirty very often and I wash that one by hand.

One of the concerns expressed to me by interested members

is the cost of our program. It all boils down to the cost. My

response is that you choose the cost. I’m not being flippant

because my budget isn’t unlimited either, but I can certainly

choose where and how much money I spend. Rather than move

up to Big Red brakes this year, I’ve chosen to add cross drilled

rotors and ceramic brake pads as part of my maintenance. I’ve

also changed the brake bias valve to make more use of my big

back tires. With my power issues behind me, I’ll brake earlier

and smoother to keep the brake temperatures manageable. Will

that make me the fastest man on earth? Of course not, but I

never will be anyway. I’m in this for the fun of it, not to choke the

last tenth of a second out of man and machine. You can run your

street stock car with street stock tires and other than mainten-

ance, incur no additional cost at all, or you can buy a cup car

with spares and tractor-trailer. It’s all up to you.

The other concern expressed has been speed. At UCR you drive

as quickly as you are comfortable with. You won’t have anyone

sitting in the next seat yelling faster, faster, more power! What

you will have is a qualified, nationally certified instructor who

will help you learn the track, the exceptional abilities of your car

and help develop the exceptional abilities of you as an advanced

driver. When one of my students struggles to get something

right, I have them slow down not speed up. If you’ve come to

hone your skills, you’re already smarter than the average driver.

It’s those drivers who think they are great that scare the crap

out of me. You will learn more and faster if you can come to as

many events as possible. The longer the time between events is

the less practiced you will be. Good driving is a learned skill, so

seat time is very important in your advancement.

One of the reasons I’m encouraging all drivers to attend the

event at Shannonville this year is the sharpening of the skills.

On a big flowing track like Mosport you can get away with be-

ing a little sloppy here and there and it has less effect on your

overall performance. Shannonville on the other hand, with its

tight switchbacks and multiple close corners, rewards a perfect

set up and execution with a great drive. Anything less and your

exit from the corner will not line you up with the next corner’s

entrance. You will leave Shannonville a better, smoother driver.

I watched the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona in January and that

race was a perfect example of how much your short game mat-

ters in motorsports. There’s very little a driver can do on the big

oval other than hold the accelerator to the floor, but the whole

race was won and lost in the tight twisty bits. One bad launch

from the Lexus and one good launch from the Porsche was the

difference between first and second in a 24-hour race. Come to

Shannonville with us and work on your short game!

The reason for the commitment from me, is that the car won’t

disappoint me. I can spend a total of $40k on the car (including

purchase price) and when I’m done supercharging, it will run with

cars costing four times as much. For 40k I can’t even buy one of

those pickup trucks I mentioned, let alone drive it to the track, drive

like a madman all weekend and then drive it home! Who else can

do that, but a Porsche owner? Buy a 20-year-old Ferrari and get

ready to mortgage the house to pay for the maintenance. You could

spend $15k on a 944 Turbo, use it for DE for three years and then

sell it for what you paid for it. You can’t golf at a good club for that

kind of money. Don’t worry, I won’t start on golf, as I already have

the lawn bowlers after me.

MISSISSAUGA - January 29, 2009 -

Porsche AG will launch the most powerful, fastest and most

refined 911 GT3 ever at the Geneva Motor Show on March

3, 2009. The normally-aspirated GT3 is the latest addition to

the new 911 series and applies a wide range of know-how gained

in motorsport – making it truly impressive not only on the road, but

also on the racetrack.

The 911 GT3 achieves higher standards in two key areas: per-

formance and driving dynamics. Thanks to an increase in engine

capacity to 3.8 litres and the fact that both the intake and, for the

first time, the exhaust camshafts are adjusted by VarioCam, the

naturally-aspirated six-cylinder power unit develops 435 bhp, up

20 bhp over its predecessor.

Through its upgraded power and performance, the boxer engine

also offers a significant increase in torque at medium engine

speeds, which is particularly significant in everyday motoring. Per-

formance is accordingly improved; the new GT3 accelerates to 100

km/h in 4.1 seconds and reaches 160 km/h in just 8.2 seconds.

Top track speed is 312 km/h.

The car’s driving dynamics are also significantly improved; the new

GT3 offers even better grip and stability. Porsche Active Suspension

Management (PASM) has enabled Porsche’s engineers to make the

springs and anti-roll bars stiffer, thus ensuring even more precise

handling in sport mode, while retaining appropriate roll comfort

suitable for everyday use in normal mode. For the first time, the

911 GT3 also comes with a particularly sporting setup of Porsche

Stability Management (PSM), offering the option to deactivate both

stability control and traction control in separate steps.

At high speeds, specific modifications of the car’s aerodynamics

have increased downforce both front and rear to such an extent

that the overall pressure pushing down the car is more than twice

that of the former model. At the same time, the new aerodynamics

package, with larger vents in both the front and rear bumpers, gives

the GT3 a brand-new look, accentuated by bi-xenon headlights,

LED rear light clusters and modified air intakes and outlets. New,

lighter wheels with central wheel locks and ultra-high performance

tires feature tire pressure control and round off the functional and

visual enhancement of the GT3.

With driving dynamics and performance at an even higher level,

the brake system, following an old Porsche tradition, has been en-

hanced accordingly. The brake discs are now larger and feature an

aluminum cover to reduce weight even further. Further improve-

ment of brake ventilation ensures an even higher level of brake

power over long periods. The GT3 can also be equipped with PCCB

ceramic brakes, developed specifically for this model.

Starting in autumn, the new GT3 will be available with an

option to further enhance its performance on the track: new

and highly innovative Porsche Active Drivetrain Mount (PADM)

engine bearings. These special engine mounts recognize

when the car is being driven in a sporting manner, stiffening

the normally elastic engine suspension. This retains comfort

in everyday traffic, while on-track, the car is not affected by

mass forces coming from the engine, as would otherwise be

the case in fast bends and on winding tracks. A further advan-

tage is improved traction when accelerating from a standstill.

Also available is a new lift system for the front axle able to

raise the ground clearance of the car for driving on bumpy

surfaces or steep gradients – for example, an underground

garage. The touch of a button raises the front ride height by

30 mm.

The 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 will go on sale at Canadian deal-

erships in October at a price of $138,100.

PERIPHERALVISION

John AdamUCR Historian

Winter had just dumped major snow while

we were in El Salvador and then had

turned to a record high temperature and

melted the snow just after we got home. Then

temperature dropped sharply and so we left for

two weeks in Cuba. Now, our hopes are up for

getting the P-cars out of storage when we finally

get some really nice days, or mild ones at least.

The 54th annual Porsche Parade will be held

outside Denver, Colorado, during the last week

of June. Registration will be electronic on the

PCA site from March 3 to 5. It’s a long drive

and so we will fly. Next year, Parade will be just

west of Chicago and so within easy reach.

NNJR driver ed at Mid-Ohio is June 5-7. Mid-

Ohio is a big favourite at our house and we hope

to be there this year. It often rains when we are

at that track and so the three-day weekend is

the best way to ensure that you get decent track

time if the weather turns against us. NNJR driver

ed registration should be open two months be-

fore the event date. Mansfield is the place to stay.

Track dates at Watkins Glen are rather interest-

ing. Several PCA Regions have back-to-back dates

that could have you on track for five or six days

in a row. It’s easiest to check The Glen web site

and pick your poison. We always stay in Corn-

ing rather than Watkins Glen and have no re-

grets. Better price, better dining. Easier access.

Check out the accommodation that works best for

you. You might consider taking some extra time to

enjoy The Corning Museum or the area wineries.

The Porsche AG factory magazine, Christophorus,

provides information on the company’s activities

and its products. It also aims to entertain read-

ers and provides lifestyle stories, sports reports

and cultural features. Christophorus was found-

ed in 1952. It is available in five languages and

contains an international section, which covers

topics from around the world, and a regional sec-

tion aimed at customers in the specific countries.

The bi-monthly issues can only be obtained by

subscription, which you can order online at the

Porsche AG web site. You will receive the maga-

zine every two months for 24 per year. Subscrip-

tions run for at least one year. The subscription

payments are paid using a credit card. To order the

magazine on the web site, please fill in the form at:

my.porsche.com/canada/none/accessoriesandser-

vices/christophorusmagazine/subscription/order/

Let’s hope that we see you out in 2009. We expect

to have a great time!

Meeting Open: 7:15 PMJack Webb - Review and approval of minutes of previous meeting – minutes

will be circulated by email for review and approval.

- Other matters arising from those minutes – None

Rob Sutherland - Membership – the latest membership statistics show 1,440 Pri

mary members plus 1,059 Affiliate members for a total of 2,499.

John Adam2009 Event Calendar - The Awards Banquet will be delayed by one week until

November 28th, as reported at the January Board Meeting.

- A joint Porsche – Ferrari Club event is tentatively scheduled for

October 3rd or 4th in conjunction with the Ontario Wine Society.

Richard BainGoodie Store– plans to complete a year-end inventory before the end of 2008

were postponed because the trailer containing the merchandise

has been snow bound. Graham will use an estimate to produce

the year-end financial statements.

2009 Socials:- April: Pfaff Tuning

- May: Garage Living in Woodbridge

- June: tbd

Del Bruce - Updates from 2009 DE Track Team – registration for advanced

run groups opened January 1, 2009

- 2009 Registration system – a number of alternatives are under

consideration and a recommendation for a replacement system

will be presented at a meeting in May.

Danny Kroll- Update on February 20th Ski day – to date 7 participants have

signed up for the bus and 3 will be coming by car. The

minimum required to justify renting a bus is 20 and alternative

arrangements will be announced if that number is not met.

Peter Carroll / Otto Mittelstaedt- Update on website transition

- Otto reviewed his strategy for assuming responsibility for the

UCR website from Peter Carroll.

- He reviewed a comprehensive survey of web development

software and services.

- Plans are to select a new hosting site and load the software for

testing within 2 weeks. If the tests are successful, content will

be progressively moved to the new site, with the old site serving

as a backup until the transition has been successfully completed.

- Longer term goals are to have Provinz available online and to be

able to search the content using Google.

- Next steps are to review specific transition plans with Peter and

Mario and hire a new web host.

- Otto provided a demonstration of his “localhost” site.

Phil Downe & Kye WankumProvinz - February issue already distributed.

- The new graphic artist’s services are working out well.

- An analysis of our printer’s invoices shows several cost savings

opportunities. The most promising is to adopt presorting of

mailing envelopes by recipient address to lower our postage

cost. This is already in our contract and would potentially save

over $1,400 per year.

- Phil proposed a recurring addition to Provinz entitled Tru Stories

consisting of articles submitted by track participants describing

their personal DE experiences.

- Phil pointed out that availability of Technical articles has been

lacking and stressed the importance of submitting these articles

at least every second month.

- Centennial College program – to date registrations have been

received for 7 of the minimum 15 places required to run this

program and Phil expressed confidence that the minimum

number will be met.

Graham Jardine Financial- Graham is working on closing the books for 2008 and will use

an estimated value for the Goodie Store inventory. Consensus

was reached on the basis for sharing the costs and profits from

2008‘s joint DE weekend with NNJR.

Mario Marello- Update on plans

- Shift Into Spring – most of the same vendors have signed

up for 2009.

- Auto Cross – the 2009 dates are on the website. An article was

submitted for the February Provinz deadline.

- Tech Sessions – several ideas were proposed for 2009 Tech

Sessions including events hosted by Tire Companies, Porsche

Dealers and other vendors of Porsche related products and

services.

Richard Roell - Concours status – an event chair is urgently needed and a

request for volunteers must go out immediately. One of the new

chair’s first responsibilities will be submission of a budget and

this can be modeled on last year’s event.

Martin Tekela - 2009 Club Race draft budget

- Wayne Spiegelberg has graciously agreed to chair the Club

Race again in 2009.

- Wayne’s budget is very conservative and projects a

modest profit.

- Although registrations are down by 10% in other regions, Wayne

has assumed UCR’s headcount will be even with 2008 due to

elimination of the conflict with the VIR event.

- Sponsorship will be an issue this year with 2 key contributors

already dropping out.

- A further cost reduction option would be to integrate the Race

Program with the August issue of Provinz. Wayne will make

the call.
