editor's ramblingsWith best wishes for the New Year to all of our members, we head into what promises to soon shape up to be another great year for UCR.Starting with the continued moving around of the locations of our monthly Socials, ably chosen by UCR director, Richard Bain, we will see you in the north-east, at the Mandarin Restaurant on Woodbine, north of Steeles, on February 10th.Future venues and interesting presenters will be published in Provinz in upcoming issues and on our website at www.pcaucr.org.New to the Board of Directors this year, Danny Kroll is organizing a UCR ski trip with a twist: getting there and getting back is all part of the fun. Please see his write-up within. The start of the DE season is not far off with two Introductory Driving Schools (IDS) organized for the month of April at Mosport's Driver Development Centre (DDC). The IDS is a must for those who have thoughts of coming out to the DE program for the first time this year. Registration is now open, so, don't delay registering to avoid disappointment! The remainder of this year's DE schedule was already published in the December issue of Provinz, but have another look: we have no fewer than six events, for a total of 13 track days! Shannonville is back on the schedule, a track that is quite technical, yet a great place to learn at for those newish to DE. I was signed off there

- gees, it must be 18 years ago - by then Chief Instructor, Howard Dexter. I think I was only 12...Plus the track team for 2009, led by Dave Osborne, has thrown a few new tidbits into the mix, to make things that much more fun this year. Please see our calendar of events and start planning now for other great events on the horizon: Shift Into Spring, our official 'launch' of the new driving season, will be held at Pfaff in April; plus, there are Zone 1 events from Tech Tactics at the end of February, to the Concours and Rally in May. Also starting that month: the UCR Auto Cross season...Not to get ahead of myself, you get the picture... Oh, did I mention Fun Tours, and Wine Tastings, and...We continue catching up on last year's adventures in this issue, with reports on the Vintage Racing Festival at Mosport, and the Porscheplatz at the ALMS race there. Also featured are the Annual Awards Gala and (2008 UCR Enthusiast of the Year) Renate Weidner's difficulties with fitting all of her shoes into the car for a trip to a DE event. Any tag-along trailers available in the membership?Lastly, it is the month of Daytona, so we pay homage to that great 24-hour race with our centre spread and back-page poster. I'm running out of space rambling on... Cheers All!

the way we were...30 Years AgoPeter Ober was president, our fourth. A dinner meeting was planned for the Boulevard Club with John Powell as speaker. The two-day May driver’s school at Mosport was limited to 30 drivers and cost $100. We had $142 in the bank and Provinz had cost $198 to produce and mail in 1977. Provinz postage was 10 cents. The treasurer was proposing an annual regional assessment of $10 per member. Geoff McCord was attempting to assemble 356 owners to exchange project ideas. Faye Cosgrove wrote an impassioned article about difficulty with 914 repairs after a collision with a utility pole on an icy road. Heinz Loth was looking for a couple to share a cabin at Parade in Snow Mass, CO. Nethercott-Lee was a Porsche dealer in Hamilton. The new Downtown Fine Cars advert featured a 928.

20 Years AgoRosemary Adam was president. The cover featured the new 944 cabriolet, soon to be received by Norah Parks (blue) and Rosemary Adam (the red one now owned by Renate Weidner). There were 23 new members listed. Bruce Farrow reported that our 1987 DE program had a net profit of $500 with 102 members attending various events. Fourteen were women. Bruce Farrow and Jake van Ginkel wrote at length about getting into racing. The monthly social was at Le Papillon on Front St and we were to show a Parade video, thus encouraging members to attend the ’89 Parade at Traverse, Michigan. Louise Lawrence wrote with good humour about buying a winter beater.

15 Years AgoGord McNeil became president. Provinz had an attractive new design by Karl Thomson for editor David Gaunt. Parade would be in Lake Placid, NY and UCR would manage golf, tennis and the 5K walk/run. New members include Mark Baun, Mario Colombo, Yarko Matkiwsky and Jim Woroch.

The Way We Were - Continued from Page 9

The Wankums had a new baby, Zachary Lucas. Monthly socials were at PCYC. Our upcoming charity auction expected to beat the previous $9k revenue, according to Peter Manson. A lengthy feature by Dawn Elise spoke volumes about overcoming her fear of driving, especially on track. Perhaps the most literate writer ever in Provinz and later a track junkie. Bruce Farrow’s Classic Porsches column covered a review of his ’93 vintage racing outings.

10 Years AgoOur new leader was John Van Atter. The Sellner/Hillcoat combo had become editors. Van Atter was also chairing the very successful Charity Auction. The ’99 Parade was to be at Mont Tremblant and UCR would play a major role in the Goodie Store. Support by Andy Hunt and Cray Scarlett was superb. Porsche AG was announcing development of its SUV that would hit showrooms in 2002.

The ground is sure to be covered in snow as the P-car is either donning its winter attire or tucked away cozy and sleeping, dreaming of warmer days. Many Canadians dread this time of year. Others use the weather to their advantage. Whether you are a seasoned snow skier or new to the sport, I encourage you to join us on February 20th for the PCA-UCR annual Ski Day. This year we will be traversing the slopes of the legendary Mount St. Louis Moonstone Ski Resort. We will be travelling as a group by luxury motor coach (with food and beverages on board and Porsche related DVD’s being shown), leaving a central location off the 401, near Allen Rd (full security parking lot) at 7:45 AM (possibly a second pick-up spot further north, off Hwy 400) and returning to Toronto by approximately 6 PM. Due to limited space on the shuttle, please book early. This is a great way to meet other members and enjoy the great outdoors.

ucr's annual ski dayRental equipment will be available. We encourage you to come on your own or bring some friends and family members. Cost will be approx $85 including ski pass and shuttle service (snacks, refreshments and movies on board). To reserve your spot, please email me,

ucr members at the 2008 varac vintage festival

Even though none of the self-professed lovers of vintage Porsches and, especially vintage Porsche racing cars, came through with an article of last year's vintage festival at Mosport, we did get a great number of awesome photos from a few of our members. Unfortunately, last year's event was cut short by an incident of the worst kind in the warm-up sessions on the Sunday morning, while this traditional gathering probably saw more crowds than ever before. I urge you to come out to see the cars in the paddock and in action on the track this year, as the Vintage Festival is at Mosport again, June 19-21, featuring the Mini (of old) and 'Das German Joust' - presumably a battle of teutonic cars. While vintage racing used to be restricted to cars with racing history prior to the end of 1972, VARAC, our local vintage rac-ing organization, has always had a bit of a lenient eye toward that rule by allowing cars without history, as long as they were prepared 'period-correct'.In the last few years, however, things have opened up further, with an entirely new and separate race group of cars from the 70's and on to 1988. It is named the Group 70+. This is where you will find most of our club members who compete in vin-tage racing, as it allows anything from highly modified 914's to 944's, to mid-80's 911s. All of these cars, as donor cars, can be bought at fairly reasonable prices but, guess what, once the competitive bug strikes, the competition escalates, well, so does the investment.Where members like Geoff McCord (356 Speedster), Bruce Farrow (first 356s, then 911s), Greg Doff, and myself have at-tempted over the years to maintain true vintage race cars at considerable expense, it is now not any cheaper to run in the 70+ group because of the high level of competiton vs. the value of vintage racing cars in the other group.

No matter what, though; vintage racing events are a lot of fun - for the entire family. The cars can be viewed up close in the pad-dock, drivers and mechanics (usually the same person) can be chatted with and, probably, everything outside of touching the 'iron' goes, which makes for a great and friendly atmosphere.

Lastly, as mentioned, the competion in Group 70+ is certainly fierce, as some cars hit Mosport lap times in the low 1:20's! But the vintage and historic racers are no slouches either - this is wheel to wheel racing, not parade-lapping, while it ensures just the correct amount of etiquette and consideration amongst the drivers. Please see www.varac.ca for more information and come out for a great fun time at Mosport this June! -ED

beauty and the shift...

TALKTRACKDave Osborne, UCR Driver Education Programme Chair

change direction in an emergency. These tips will serve you well for the rest of your driving life, regardless of how far you go in our program. During your IDS day you will be mentored by our Chief Instructor and a host of helpful Instructors who’s skills and good humor will make this day a very enjoyable experience.

After lunch, which is provided, you’ll get to practice your newfound skills on the twisty Development Track and slip and slide in safety on the Skid Pads until you’re confident in your new abilities. Not sure of something? Just ask anyone, because they’re all there to help you grow confident behind the wheel! At the end of the IDS day, you’ll know that you made the right choice when you signed up for the track events this season. Your new skills and confidence will serve you well and you won’t have looked forward to anything quite so much since childhood!

It’s January now, so registration for all our events and the IDS schools are open. Don’t be disappointed. Register now and register for everything you can. It’s your program, so come and drive with us!

I hope that this edition of Track Talk finds you all happy, healthy and optimistic after your holiday celebrations. The new year is always a time to look forward and set aside the trials and tribulations of the past year. For months now your track team has been looking forward to the new season with great enthusiasm, but all the high hopes in the world won’t make the season a success. You will.

Everyone who signs up for the events this year will help make the program worthwhile. We’ve increased the number of events, added great giveaways, extended the socials to include everyone and even lowered the costs to you. It won’t mean a thing if everyone from the newest members to the Instructors don’t come out and take part in all the events!

This is where you get to decide what kind of program you want. The choices are a small expensive one or a larger inexpensive one. The economics are simple, we just spread the costs out over more events so we can pass the savings on to you. If you vote with your support this year, we should be able to lower the fees again next year without giving up anything. During the season we’ll be doing a questionnaire to ask you how we’re doing and we will weigh all your responses carefully. It’s the membership that makes UCR the great club that it is and your Track Team is here to support the members.

To further introduce the program to our newcomers, I’ll start with the Introductory Driving Schools (IDS) that take place in April of 2009. These two schools are held at the Driver Training Facility just next to the main track at Mosport. We are one of the few regions who offer this course as prerequisite to our Driver Education program. While it’s great fun it also serves the purpose of preparing you and your car control skills for the full track program.

For the paltry sum of $190 you are invited to attend a classroom session that highlights the basics of smooth spirited driving. You’ll learn the apex, work zones, how to find the quick line and even how to sit in your seat with the best car control as your goal. You’ll then proceed to the skid pads where you’ll be taught throttle steering, cornering skills and even how to

the alms at mosport - a photographer's perspectiveStory and Photographs by Andreas Trauttmansdorff, UCR Member at LargeI went to the ALMS race at Mosport last summer. No. I wasn’t driving. Apparently you have to have a newish car. My ‘69 911 just wasn’t going to cut it. I tried to explain to them that I’d beefed up the suspension. Still no go. I had to settle for just taking pictures. Fortunately being a professional photographer and knowing the right people can sometimes open some doors. (Thanks, Kye.)

To accommodate a series like the ALMS improvements had to be made around the track to improve safety, specifically with higher and stronger catch fencing. Mosport used to be a place where even the average spectator armed with a half decent camera could get great shots. Not anymore. You’re now looking through chain link from what used to be all the best vantage points, outside of turn 3, outside of turn 5. Even the pros have to contend with some of these fences. There are a couple of holes cut into them at the most popular spots. In my opinion they aren’t the best spots and, even if you use them, you’ll only end up with the same shot all the other shooters got from there. One option is to use as long a lens as you can stand, schlepping all day and finding angles from around the ends of these bigger fences. Outside turn 5b towards 5a is a great spot with or without a press pass. And a quick pan to the left gives you a great angle of the cars going away up the Andretti straight. One spot I always come back to is the inside of turn 2, even from behind the old spectator fence. Without a pass I think there isn’t a spot where you can get closer to the action. The cars are really moving at that point and with a wider lens and a slower shutter speed you can get some really great panning blur effects, ala Rainer Schlegelmilch. And in the afternoon there’s a tasty bit of sunlight bouncing off the white inside wall to light up the near side of the cars.

A proper press pass did get me to some new spots I hadn’t explored before. The outside of turn two is pretty awesome. With the lens laying on top of the wall, you can catch the cars just turning in as they crest the hill into 2. I had to take a quick self portrait at that spot. It’s the corner everyone talks about when discussing actually driving Mosport. I wanted something of me with the big honkin’ 300mm lens I’d borrowed and the track in the background. Then I remembered one of the track marshals telling me to always keep an eye up the track. You >
