PUGIN’S PROGRESSby Stephen Guy

continued from page 1

Significantly, atOswaldcroft Pugindeveloped his pin-wheel concept –rooms radiating froma central staircase. This helped changethe course of domes-tic architecture.Oswaldcroft also fea-tured innovations inits external decora-tions.

As with some ofhis commissions,Pugin also designed

furniture for Henry’snew home.

He created anamazing cabinetbased on cupboardsthat once gracedcolourful royalcourts in the 15thcentury. Each door isdecorated with theSharples badge fea-turing a crescentmoon.

The cabinet, nowin the IndianapolisMuseum of Art, was

carved by GeorgeMyers – a hugely-tal-ented craftsman whobecame known asPugin’s Builder.

London’s Victoriaand Albert Museumhas a collection of 11Pugin drawingss h o w i n gOswaldcroft fittingsand furniture includ-ing the Indianapoliscabinet.

The house wasprobably named inhonour of thebuilder’s only sonGeorge Oswald

Sharples. In 1877George Oswald mar-ried Francesca Salvinof Burn Hall,Durham.

Pugin was marriedthree times. At just20, he was left a wid-ower with a daughterafter his first wifedied in childbirth. Hewent on to father sixmore children bysubsequent wives.

Oswaldcroft wasextended in 1866 –the new work wasdesigned byAugustus’ son

Edward Pugin. It is arare surviving exam-ple of Edward’sdomestic work.

Grade II*-listedOswaldcroft becameSt Joseph’s NursingHome and retainsmany original fea-tures.

STRANGE TALES

THEVALE

by AntonValdemart

Dorothy lovedsummer nightswhen she wouldclimb the circularstaircase to the topof the high tower.

While the rest of thehouse slept, she wouldtiptoe out of the bed-room and fumble herway to the tiny dooron the top landing ofthe ancient house.

This was her specialtime when she couldbe alone, free from theconstant chatter of herfour younger sisters, the grumbling offather and waspishcomments of mother.

Slowly she mount-ed the cool stonesteps, carefully count-ing each one until she

She savoured themoonlit nights withChildwall Valleyspread below her ineerie silence.Corncrake Housestood on Score Lane, the unmade road gatedto keep livestock fromwandering.

It was 1927 andcars had trouble nego-tiating the lane. Itmade the isolationeven more intense.

Dorothy stood like astatue on the roof. There was a coolbreeze wafting up fromthe valley. She wasflushed from her exer-tions and delighted inthe sensual feel of thegentle wind on hernaked arms and legs.

An owl flew above, passing before the fullmoon like a swoopingghost. The distantbark of a fox brieflybroke the silence.

Dorothy revelled inthe bliss of themoment – she felt soalive, every sinew ofher lithe body tinglingwith pleasurable sen-sations. She openedher eyes wide to

absorb what she calledher Night Kingdom.

Suddenly she feltsomething was miss-ing and this sensationgrew as she carefullyclimbed down thestairs to rejoin herunconscious sisters inthe huge communalbedroom.

The 19-year-old layawake, sleep evadingher. The following dayshe was strangelysilent and over thenext week was unableto make any nocturnalvisits to the towerbecause of poorweather.

Dorothy, whilehelping her mothersort out the contentsof one of the unusedrooms, found a beauti-ful veil spread out in atrunk. It had beenworn by her deeplyunpleasant grand-mother when she mar-ried all those yearsago in ChildwallChurch.

Dorothy furtivelyrolled up the veil andhid it away. She wasfascinated by the fine, transparent silk as softas gossamer.

It felt like a softbreeze as she ran itthrough her fingers.

That night she heldthe veil in her trem-bling hand as sheclimbed the stairs.

She must wear it,feel its soft caress onher face in the moonlitbreeze. At lastDorothy stood quiver-ing in her favouriteplace and slowly –nervously – put on theveil.

At first the sensa-tion was intoxicating, like a hundred tinyhands stroking her hot

face. This was thegreatest-ever feelingof untrammelled, unconfined joy.

Then all changed. Ahorrible toothless hagwas staring at herthrough the veil, herdeep-set eyes blazing.

“Take it off!” thecrone screamed.

Dorothy neverreturned to the tower. · Read my nextStrange Tale – HeKnew Her Secret - inthe December Link.

“FIGHTINGFIT”

by Paul Coshott

Hello, welcomeback to our‘Fighting Fit’c a m p a i g n .This month weare going totalk about val-ues. This is thesecond part to“motivation”,the first partb e i n g“ b e l i e f s ” ,which was lastmonth’s topic.

To value some-thing means toplace importanceupon it; anythingyou hold dear canbe called a value. So when you andI make a decision, what are some ofthe states and

emotions that weare movingtowards? Maybemoney, fulfilmentand comfort….

When I haveasked a clientabout the feelingsthat are mostimportant forthem in theirlives, they’llrespond withwords like suc-cess, freedom, intimacy, securi-ty, adventure, power, comfortand health. Thereare some emo-tional states thatyou’ll do more toachieve than oth-ers so thereforeyou don’t valuethem equally.

Take a momentand make a list ofsome of the thingsyou value most.

What did you learnfrom doing this? Ifyour number one val-ues are passion, adventure and power,I know you are goingto make differentdecisions than some-one whose top valuesare security , com-fort, intimacy andhealth. While youhave ‘movingtoward’ values, youalso have ‘movingaway’ from values.

How many of youhave ever done pub-lic speaking? I knowthe first time I did apresentation in frontof a group of busi-ness leaders, I wasquite nervous butthere are many peo-ple out there whowon’t dare to do anykind of public speak-ing. Maybe they havea fear of failure, rejection or humilia-tion. As well as thesethree emotions, thereare others; rejection, anger, frustration, loneliness, depres-sion, failure, humili-ation, guilt, con-frontation etc.

Take a momentnow and make a listof some of the emo-tions you like toavoid. What does thistell you?

Now that you havemade a list of your‘moving toward’ and‘moving away’ val-ues, does this giveyou an idea of whyyou do what you do?For example, if yournumber one ‘movingtoward’ value isadventure and yournumber one ‘movingaway’ value is fear, you may think twice

about doing a bungeejump, depending onthe kind of fear youhave.

E X E R C I S E :Think about the goalyou want to achieve .Write down the val-ues you need to havein order to achievethis goal. Once youhave made a list, carry it around withyou and take a lookbefore you make anydecisions withregards to your goal.

GUNPOWDER,TREASONAND PLOT

By Stephen GuyIt was 1605 andall England wasagog with news ofthe plot to blowup Parliament,King James I andhis Lords andMPs.

Revenge was swiftand Guy Fawkes andhis fellow Catholicplotters were execut-ed in the most bar-baric manner – hung, drawn and quartered. This meant they werehanged and, while, still alive, choppedup and their headsand body parts dis-played on pikes as awarning to others.

All had activelyplanned the horrificdeaths of theProtestant king in anact of outrageous ter-rorism. It was only

through the vigilanceof the authorities thatFawkes was spottedbefore he could lightthe fuse to ignite thepile of gunpowder-filled barrels underWestminster .

This is why westill celebrate thefoiling of the plot on5 November everyyear by burning andeffigy of GuyFawkes.

In 1605 the areathat is now southLiverpool was verydifferent from today. It was still partlyancient forest thatwas gradually beingcleared to make wayfor farmland. TinyLiverpool ’s sevenstreets were domi-nated by an ancientcastle.

A track led

through the treessouth to Speke Hall.Just one building issaid to have stoodalong the way – andstill stands – theAncient Chapel ofToxteth.

Visitors to SpekeHall are always fas-cinated by thepriests’ hidingplaces. In 1605 theHall was occupied bya Catholic family, theNorrises. As follow-ers of the old faith, they had to pay finesfor not attendingChurch of Englandservices. These finesaccelerated thefinancial decline ofthe Norris family.

Thomas Norrisinherited the Hall in1651 and was thefirst Protestant headof the family,

However, he was aRoyalist and was onthe losing side in theCivil War when puri-tan Roundheads(Republicans) foughtCavalier dandies(Royalists).

The Norris estateswere confiscated andnot regained untilCharles II – theMerry Monarch –was restored to thethrone amid nationalrejoicing after themiserable years ofthe Commonwealth(Republic) wheneven dancing wasbanned.

STONEYCROFT 6HALE 2

Stoneycroft went goalcrazy against WestCheshire League sideHale in their LiverpoolChallenge Cup first roundtie at Maiden Lane onSaturday 22nd September2012.

After a slow start when bothsides, who had never metbefore, the game suddenlycame to life in the twelfthminute when Adam, theyoungest of the Baker boys,

broke into the Hale box and hita sweet right-footed drive justinside the left-hand post toopen the scoring. Six minuteslater he was involved in analtercation with a Hale playerwhich saw both of them go intothe referee’s notebook andsoon after that sloppy defen-sive work let Hale through tolevel the scores.

The score-line remained thesame until just before half-timewhen the Hale goalkeeperfelled the Stoneycroft attacker, who was about to round him,

to concede a penalty and earnhimself a yellow card. MikeKinney netted from the ensu-ing penalty kick to put his sidein front going into the break.

Ten minutes into the secondhalf Adam Beckett hit a superbtwenty yard drive into the roofof the Hale net to make it threefor the home side. Fifteen min-utes later Mick Gough, makinghis debut for the Croft, latchedon to a loose pass to breakthrough and coolly side-footthe ball past the advancinggoalkeeper to make it four. The

visitors were trying hard to getback into the game but theywere now up against a deter-mined home side who had thebit between their teeth andwere playing with confidence, settling in to their passinggame with some attractivemoves with direction and pur-pose. It was after one suchmove that Mike Kinney addedto his tally.

Hale did pull one backalmost straight from the restartto make it 5-2 but it was toprove Stoneycroft’s day as they

added a sixth following a bril-liant exchange of passes thathad the Hale defenders mes-merised; that man Kinneypopped up again to smash aperfectly hit low cross sweetlyinto the bulging net and sendhis team into the second round.
