He had a strange, distinctive lookabout him – thehaughty expres-sion, the noncha-lant air but, mostof all, his pene-trating eye.

Vincent Colebrooklived in shabby splen-dour in a villa thatonce echoed to thesound of laughter andthe drone of conver-sation. It was nowsilent.

It was the periodbetween the warswhen Liverpool washit by the Depression. The wheels of indus-try slowed, fewerships came into portand many peoplewere out of work.

The modern worldstopped at the sand-stone gates of Ver-mont in the leafyVictorian suburb. Atone time the Valde-marts and the Cole-brooks had socialised, when business dealswere struck overcigars and whisky.

Vincent ignored thepassing years. Hewrapped himself inthe past as hewrapped himself inhis theatrical cloakwhen he boiled off hisinner rage in longwalks across thecity’s parks.

“You have been though thewoods and sat on the stoneseat at Camp Hill,” was hisopening remark on one visit.Father confirmed that Vincentwas correct.

“You guessed it – I usuallycome that way,” said Dad.

Vincent laughed: “Onlypartly – the mud on your shoesand the sand on your coat givesome of the game away.”

Vincent’s face had he aspectof a cadaver, his piercing blueeye peered through the mono-cle as a fish looks through theice of a frozen pond.

“You must not see her,” hequietly told his visitor. “If youdo, the earth will collapse andyou will be trapped forever.”

He saw her, waved – andpromptly vanished fromsight. He had fallen down anold well and was rescued withgreat difficulty.

At Vincent’s funeral, father waswatching the coffin being loweredinto the family vault when he dis-tinctly heard a familiar voice mur-mur: “I can see you”.

Of course, whatwould Hallowe’enbe without seasonalgoodies such asroast chestnuts, tof-fee apples or, inIreland, the tradi-tional barmbrack(fruit bread). Addedto these, the grow-ing popularity ofAmerican treatssuch as pumpkinsoup and pumpkinpie now makesHallowe’en a trulymulti-cultural affair, with fun for every-one.

“Trick or treat” isa recent Americanimport which arous-es mixed feelingsbut we, of course, have our old cus-toms such as “duck-apple” or “apple-bobbing”, whichcan be great fun forall the family, andevery home shouldhave it’s own jack-o-lantern, of course– an eerily carvedturnip or pumpkinwith a candle insideit to complete theghostly effect.

This is believedto be a relic fromthe Celtic past whenevery home would

light a candle to showthe way home to spiritsrevisiting the earth forthe day so the jack-o-lantern very much sym-bolises the ancient andmodern aspects of thispopular festivity.

Teenagers love the horror films andfancy-dress parties which have nowbecome so popular and there is anothercross-cultural reference here with theUnited States giving back it’s influenceon a tradition which crossed theAtlantic with the Scots and Irish whovoyaged there in such large numbers inthe 19th. century. Many people are sur-prised to learn, however, that costumeparties and trick-or-treat did not appearuntil the mid 20th. century, eventhough they have now madeHallowe’en a con-siderable money-spinner around theglobe.

So, however youchoose to celebrate, weat The Link wish allour readers a veryhappy and enjoyableHallowe’en!

Stephen Jones was born inLiverpool and has lived hereall his life.

He followed the family pathonto the Liverpool Dockswhere he worked until the mid-

1990s and also boxed professionally aftersetting an amateur record for successiveknockout wins in one season.

His first book (“Three Weeks-OneNight”) spawned a whole raft of home townurban myths and his new book(“Colourful”) is a darkly witty collection ofpersonal anecdotes that serve as a platformfor a self-deprecating black humour.Stephen is currently producing the featurefilm “Angel Falls” and creating the animat-ed TV Series “Sockland”.

“Colourful” is now available on Amazon(Kindle edition priced at £2.96) and hasattracted a 5-star rating and some fantasticreviews (one reviewer called it “aLiverpudlian masterpiece” and anothercommented “…it’s absolutely brilliant, a

right laugh from start to fin-ish…..so thought provoking aswell, it will leave you wonder-

be applied in any walk of life.Although his story is unique, the problems and adversitieswe all face in our daily livesare very similar. Andy nowspends his time going intoschools, community groups, charities and the corporateworld sharing his experienceswith others, describing howhe overcame adversity andshowing that it’s how youdeal with the situation thatcounts, turning anything neg-ative into a positive.

On his visits, he takes withhim his ‘bag of tricks’ whichreally engages the audienceand creates some fantasticquestions, especially withschool-aged children. The kitincludes pieces of shrapneltaken out of his body, RoyalMarine clothing, a selectionof his prosthetic legs, and a

tourniquet. If a tourniquethadn’t been applied by hisfellow Marines he wouldhave bled to death withinminutes and this perfectlyhighlights the importance ofworking as a team.

Andy was awarded JuiceFMs OutstandingAchievement Award at theirInspiration Awards in April2012. Andy Grant really isan inspiration and is workingso hard to inspire others, especially children andyoung people. In January2013, he is competing in theDakar Rally (the world’stoughest rally!) withRace2Recovery. He is alsohoping to be part of the nextWalking with the Woundedchallenge and is hoping to bepart of the South Pole expedi-tion in 2013. Over ArmedForces Weekend 2013, Andyand a committee are arrang-

ing a summer ball in aid ofHelp for Heroes at theLiverpool Hilton Hotel.

Andy’s partner Leonieworks hard raising money forcharity and is one of the 2013Royal Marine Wives andGirlfriends Calendar Girls, which is out in October, rais-ing money for the RoyalMarine Charitable TrustFund, and is also taking partin the 10k CommandoChallenge.

Also at the Food Festival was Rajev (chef at the Spice Lounge) giving people a true taste ofIndian food. The day was made even nicer as the sun shone all day and many people had taken blankets andwere able to enjoy the food while sitting in the sunshine.

Beauty Room!

Hello - thank you for the feedback Ireceived from the first edition of myFighting Fit campaign. Since operatingmy own business as a Personal FitnessTrainer and Life Coach, it’s fair to saythat I have come across every varietyof human being you can think of.

FIGHTING FITCAMPAIGN

by Paul CoshottISSUE2: MOTIVATION (PART 1: BELIEFS)

There have been many successstories and there have also beensome people who, deep down, havenot wanted to change for whateverreason. I’m quite a deep thinker sowhen I come away from a session Isometimes think “why aren’t theydoing xyz?” This month and next Iwill be talking about motivation. This will be split up into 2 parts -Beliefs and Values. This month weare going to talk about Beliefs.

So what are beliefs and where dothey come from? Beliefs come fromother people like our parents, teach-ers, peer groups, friends, family andmaybe media. In fact from anyone

who still exerts any influence over us. If you think back toyour childhood, how was your behaviour affected by whatsomeone else said to you? Maybe a remark from a teacher orcolleague such as “what a stupid answer” made you thinktwice about raising your hand again in class for fear of humil-iation. Can you remember any strong beliefs that you formedabout yourself or your situation? It is likely that these beliefsstill influence your behaviour today.

Beliefs can play a big part when working towards some-thing, e.g. “Can I really achieve that? Am I worthy of that?”.If you think of a belief as a tabletop, it will have 4 legs to sup-port it. For example, if you have a belief that “I’m ugly”, thenyou will need 4 legs or references to support that belief. “I’mfat, I have spots, I have bad breath, nobody loves me”. If youdecide that something is bad then I’m sure you could find ref-erences to back up that belief. If you decide something isgood, then I’m sure you could find beliefs to back this up also. You and I live through our beliefs. What I want is to help youto change your beliefs into more positive ones..

EXERCISE: What I would like you to do is to write downall your beliefs that empower and dis-empower you. Spendabout 10 minutes doing this and jot down as many as you can.Take a moment to review your beliefs and circle the 3 mostempowering beliefs on your list. How do they empower you?How do they strengthen your life? Think about the positiveeffects they have on you. Strengthen your emotional insensi-tivity and sense of certainty that these beliefs are true and realso they can guide your future behaviours.

Now, look at your disempowering beliefs. What I want youto do here is to knock those legs of certainty from under thesebeliefs. Choose the two most disempowering beliefs and askyourself the following questions:

How is this belief pathetic and absurd? Was the person I learned this belief from worth modelling

in this area? What will it ultimately cost me emotionally if I don’t let go

of this belief? What will it ultimately cost me in my relation-

ship if I don’t let go of this belief? What will it cost me physically? What will it cost me financially?Once you have answered these questions,

become fully associated to what these beliefshave been costing you. Finally, we can’t get ridof a belief without replacing it with a new one, sowrite down some positive replacements for thelimiting beliefs you have just eliminated.

Once you have chosen new beliefs, think ofsome references or ‘table legs’ that will supportyour new belief. Whatever the results you areafter, think of a person or role model who isalready achieving results in a particular area andask them or think about what their beliefs are..

Sam, male, Border Collie,Aged 2 years

Sam is an absolute sweet-heart who came into DogsTrust Merseyside from a straypound. He can be very nervousof new people but once youhave gained his trust he givesfabulous cuddles. Sam prefershuman company so would liketo be the only dog in the home.

Sam needs a patient homewho can give him the time andspace to gain a bond with him.We do not know Sam’s historybut he does get worried in newenvironments and is a bit of anescape artist so his new ownerwill need to keep a careful eyeon him! Sadly Sam came to us

with a leg that had an oldinjury and unfortunately thisleg had to be removed but he iscoping very well on just three.

Dogs are in fact amazinglygood at adapting to the loss of alimb. Once they are over theactual operation (probably afew days), they very quicklylearn to walk on the other threelegs and once they’re fit enoughto run around you’ll hardlyknow there’s a leg missing.

If you would like to offer ahome to Sam please call DogsTrust Merseyside directly on0151 480 0660, visit the cen-tre at Whiston Lane,Huyton, L36 6HP or visitwww.dogstrust.org.uk

IT might not be as dramatic asDowntown Abbey but vacancieshave arisen for maids, butlers orfootmen at an Edwardian CountryHouse.

The jobs, however, are not full-timepositions and they come without pay.

Croxteth Hall is looking to recruitmore Heritage Volunteers to form part ofthe “household staff” at the hall.

They will help guide thousands of vis-itors around the Hall and Estate eachyear.

“The volunteers play an essential rolein the Hall’s living history educationalprogramme, “said Councillor PeterMitchell, Mayoral Lead on Parks andOpen Spaces. “So this is a fantasticchance for anybody with a few hours tospare and who is interested in history tojoin a great team in a fascinating role.

despite losing theirmain strikers,Mitchell McNallyand Francis Evans, for a large part of theearly season due toinjury and marriagerespectively. The 3-3 home draw withBelfry saw the teamachieve a point withtwo penalties in thelast minute, expertlyput away by RossKennedy. Theteam’s solitary defeatat rivals fromFormby, RedgateRovers, was the result

of a late injury afterthe three substituteshad already beenused with the 10 menconceding 2 goals inthe last five minutes.

The youth teamhave also got off to agood start and havingfinished 4rd last sea-son are favourites totake the title. A 6-1home win over ayouthful Custys wasimproved by a 2-0 winat Vauxhall Motorswith spectacular goalsby Kieran Parker andCallum Brown.

SOUTH ON THEFRONT FOOT

The club is field-ing four teamsthis season and allfour have madepromising startsto the campaign.

The first team, who were last seasonpromoted to the firstdivision of theCounty PremierLeague, started theircampaign with a dis-appointing homedefeat to Allerton. However, two backto back wins, 2-1against Alumni and5-3 against CopperasHill, have seen thenmove to fourth in thetable. Goals havecome from stalwartsJohn Elias, ChrisMcCabe, TerryTynan and Jopo.

The second team, who are in the seconddivision of the CountyPremier League, havealso made a promisingstart with a flying 5-1away victory againstAintree Villa, and a 4-4 draw against astrong KCFC team, having trailed 2-0 athalf time. Amongst thegoals have been TonyBarnes, Josh Breenand Michael Wall.

The third team, anew younger outfitunder the guidanceof Will Grant andJimmy Keegan, areunbeaten in theiropening two fixturesin the I-ZingariCombination firstdivision. A 2-2 drawagainst LiverpoolCavaliers was fol-lowed by a strong 2-1 victory againstWalton CTC. DannyMcNally scored thecrucial penaltyagainst Walton withBen Bright, AaronFitzsimmons andPedro Cooke theother marksmen inthese fixtures.

Finally, the Vets XIdemolished De laSalle in the openingday fixture. They fol-lowed this up with acredible 2-2 drawagainst Winchesterbut then tasted defeat2-1 against Bleak Vetsafter conceding a lastminute goal. ALDER FC - GREATSTART TO THE SEASON

by Peter Harrison

In the opening home fixture of thecampaign spectators atStoneycroft FC’s Maiden Laneground were treated to anenthralling spectacle as goals flewin at either end as both teamsattacked as if their lives dependedon it.

Twice coming back from behind, theStoneycroft players showed characterand determination to fight their wayback into contention and eventually runout worthy winners against last season’schampions.

With five players in the Stoneycroftline up helping themselves to a goal

apiece it was clear that the onus was onteamwork. Kev Moss, with a beautifullytaken free kick that flew in to the netfrom twenty-five yards, Paul Carruthers,Paul Boardman and a rare headed goalfrom Mike Kinney all registered on thescore sheet. Perhaps the real Roy of theRovers story, though, was the fact thatEddie Baker, making his first appear-ance since breaking a leg half waythrough last season, was able to com-plete the scoring for a delighted Croft.Sadly Eddie, who had come on as a latesubstitute, had to go off after his goaland club officials suggest that he mayrequire a little more time to complete hisrecovery.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with theteam’s display” enthused a delightedmanager, John Leary: “This was a greatteam performance in which everybodywas involved. We played some greatstuff and were well worthy of victory. Ifwe can continue to play like that andmaintain consistency then we will be inthe reckoning come the end of the sea-son. But this is just one game and wehave to maintain the momentum and notlet our guard drop”.

The Croft have more tough fixturescoming up so one can only hope thatthey can keep up this level of perform-ance. One thing is certain: games likethis will bring the crowds in!

Eddie Baker was a scor-er on his short livedreturn from injuryagainst APH.
