Officials compiling theDoomsday Book throughoutEngland in 1087 found littleto record on the windsweptbanks of the River Mersey.

A few miles inland they docu-mented such communities asChildwall, Walton and WestDerby.

Just 21 years earlier William ofNormandy had successfullyinvaded England, destroyingKing Harold and his army in theBattle of Hastings.

The conqueror set aboutremoving the defeated Saxonsand replacing them with croniesand supporters who had helpedhis campaign.

FIRST OFMANY

by Stephen Guy

In those days little disturbed the peace andquiet on the estuary. There was no Liverpool –just a manor farm called Esmedune held by aman called Edelmund.

The Doomsday officials recorded that thefarm was worth 32 pence and extended up to180 acres. The poor quality land was tilled bya plough drawn by eight oxen.

Smithdown Lane (pictured) led to the farmand is a later corruption of the name Esmedune,as is evident when you say the name.

The lane is therefore probably the mostancient road in Liverpool –older even than thetown’s original seven streets that clusteredaround the much-later castle.

This was an age when there was no standardspelling of place names – that only happenedwhen the Ordnance Survey maps were drawnup in the 19th century.

Officials wrote down names in the waylocal people pronounced them. By 1221 themanor was interpreted as Shinthedun in a writof inquiry.

Some 75 years later the name has becomeSmitheden. Centuries passed and in the reignof Charles I it is recorded as Smithdon, fromwhich the modern name derives.

Smithdown Road was created at a much laterdate, developed in Victorian and Edwardiantimes as Liverpool expanded. Rows of shops

and businesses are still a bigattraction.

The cemetery contains manyfascinating memorials and is wellworth a visit. One stone that inter-ests me records a lady with thelovely name True Guy, althoughshe was not a relation.

Further down stood SeftonGeneral Hospital. As a smallchild I recall mother taking me tovisit granddad, who was recover-

ing from an operation.

However, matron would notallow me to see him (he was amass of tubes) and I rememberhaving to wait alone in a desolatecorridor.

The Mckenna kids with mum, Moira is second left

also a mother ofdeities. EarlyChristians embracedthe idea by dedicatingthe fourth Sunday inLent to Mary themother of Christ and,as time went by, theEnglish extended theidea to include allmothers in whatbecame known as“Mothering Sunday”.From the early 16thcentury, families cele-brated with servantsbeing allowed home tovisit their mothers, and even a specialcake baked to markthe day.

An American woman,Anna Jarvis, campaignedfor a special day to hon-our mothers in memory ofher own mother’s goodworks in the community.Presidents Taft andRoosevelt supportedAnna’s campaign and in1914 President WoodrowWilson proclaimed thatMay 2nd was a nationalholiday - “Mother’s Day”.Sadly, the growing com-mercialisation ofMother’s Day was deeplydistressing to Anna, whoadmitted before her deathin 1948 that she regrettedstarting the tradition.

Mother’s Day continues toflourish around the globe, albeiton different dates. Here inBritain we keep to the Springtime tradition, with florists andcard shops doing a roaring tradeand restaurants full as familiesshow their appreciation for thatperson we all take for grantedthe rest of the year - good oldmum!

Happy Mother’s Day from all atthe LINK.

mask. Should he con-tinue? The invitationhad come through thesixth-form – friendsof friends who hadthe house to them-selves for theevening.

The strains ofW i n c h e s t e rCathedral came cas-cading out of theunusual dwelling. Hecould not understandwhy he’d nevernoticed the housebefore while walkingin Sandfield Park.

Young peoplefilled the rooms, some attemptingconversation andothers in quiet rever-ie. All were wearingmasks ranging fromthe grotesque to thestylish.

Eric felt slightlyunder-dressed in hisplain, Lone Ranger-type creation. Hescanned the gather-ing trying to recog-nise people beneaththeir disguises.

Was that Murphfrom 6L? Could thatbe Mabel from 6U?He could not tellfrom their voicesbecause the musicwas so loud.

The girls woreminiskirts, the boyscolourful hipstertrousers. All weredeathly pale in thesubdued light.

He first became aware ofher through the corner of hiseye. She was looking at himintently, her face dominatedby a simple black cat mask.He realised they were theonly two wearing blackmasks.

They sat together in thegarden enjoying the warmsummer air. This was herhome, she told him, her greeneyes staring intently frombehind the mask.

They danced to the intoxi-cating slow drone of Set MeFree played over and overagain on the radiogram.

At midnight they kissedlong and deep, the softnessand sweetness of her lips

sending his head spinning.“Come this Friday. We will

wear the masks,” she toldEric as he joined those drift-ing away into the sultry night.

Friday came and his heartthumped in anticipation.Again he paused at the gate, carefully putting on his mask.

He walked awkwardly upthe long drive. Female voicesseemed to be whispering inthe shrubbery. Bats wheeledoverhead and an owlscreeched.

This time the house wassilent apart from the muffledpurr of Set Me Free. Ericrang the bell.

The door seemed to openby itself. Then she was upon

him like a wildcat. At first hethought it was a game untilhe saw her snarling mouthbeneath the mask and felt hernails digging into his neck.

There was no soft kiss justa crazy dance with painfulbiting. He struggled free, dis-orientated and afraid.

He fled away through theshrubbery, flinging his maskaside.

Next day he returned butcould find no trace of thehouse, only his bedraggledmask hanging limply from abush.

Paul Coshott hasbeen running hisPersonal TrainingBusiness inLiverpool foralmost 17 years.

He is also an NLPTherapist and LifeCoach and teaches JuJitsu and Boxercise. Here, he has puttogether a short cir-cuit workout that youcan do at home, which will help toneall the major musclegroups and burncalories.

(i) Warm Up -Skipping.

People often askme, if they were tobuy a piece of equip-ment, what shouldthey buy. I alwaysrespond by saying askipping rope -you’ll be able to getone from the highstreet for about£3/£4. Start off bytaking the rope overyour head 20 times.Your heart will rock-et at the start. Whenyou feel comfortable, try swinging the ropeover your head 30times and build upuntil you can skipnon-stop for 3 min-utes. You can do thisoutside, or if youdon’t feel comfort-able, skip indoorswithout the rope.

(ii) Circuit Training. Here, we are going

to follow a circuitthat will work all themajor musclegroups. Try for 30seconds on eachexercise. When youhave built up yourfitness, try oneminute on each exer-cise.

• Squats. Make sure

your feet are shoul-der width apart andyour feet straight.Keep your kneesover your ankles.Breathe in on theway down, breatheout on the way up.

• Star Jumps. Keepyour heels up offthe floor but beaware of your calfmuscles tighteningup. This will alsomaintain thew a r m i n g - u pprocess of theshoulders.

• S t o m a c hCrunches. Put yourfeet flat, kneesbent. Tuck the chininto your chest.Keep the shouldersback, hands on thethighs. Reach up tothe knees andback. Keep thelower back on thefloor. Breathe outon the effort.Putting this exer-cise in at this pointwill help bring theheart rate downafter star jumps.

• Press-ups. Keepthe knees on thefloor, unless you’recomfortable doinga full press up.Hands wide andchest in line withthe hands. Breathein on the waydown, out on theway up.

• Lunges. Begin bydoing one leg at atime i.e. 30 sec-onds on left leg, then 30 seconds onright leg. Whenyou are feeling fit-ter and stronger, try doing alternatelunges. If you havean issue with yourknees, use a chairfor support. The

KEEP FITWITHPAUL

COSHOTT

leg that is doingthe lunge, makesure you pushthrough the heel onthe way back. Thiswill take the pres-sure through theglutes, which iswhere you want it,rather than theknees.

• Jogging on thespot. A very under-estimated exercise.Try and keep the

knees high. Thiswill take yourheart rate back upagain. If you feelu n c o m f o r t a b l ewith jogging, thentake it to a marchon the spot.

• Lateral Jumps.Maybe use a rolledup towel or a smallobject. Stand at theside of it. Bend theknees and jumpover the object,

sideways and thenjump back. Makesure you bend yourknees so you areslightly workingyour thighs. If youare working to 30seconds, maybeaim for about 12reps. If you areworking to 1minute, maybe aimfor about 20 reps.Your heart rate willgo up again duringthis exercise.

• Squats. Againworking the thighsand the glutes, thisexercise will alsogently bring downyour heart rate.

• S t o m a c hC r u n c h e s .Working the stom-ach and core. Keepthe feet flat, kneesbent, chin tuckedinto the chest,shoulders back.Reach up to your

knees. Breathe outon the effort. Thiswill also help yourheart rate comedown again.

• Star Jumps. Lastexercise for the cir-cuit. Keep theheels up and takethe arms no higherthan shoulderheight. This willtake your heart rateback up again andprepare you for

some shadow box-ing.

The weather con-tinues to wreakhavoc with thefixture pro-gramme, with amixture of snowand rain leadingto postponements.

The first teamhave managed toconsolidate theirposition with a pushfor promotion on thecards following twoback-to-back winsagainst Old Holts. A6-0 victory was fol-lowed by a 5-0 victo-ry with regularmarksman PaulO’Hare bagging fourgoals and MickHutton and JoeReynolds chippingin.

The second team, despite Lee Sambornetting regularly, arefinding life tough inthe second division

of the LiverpoolPremier League andhave suffered twoheavy defeats toWarbreck Reserves. The third teamresumed their fixturelist with a clashagainst top of thetable Essemay and, despite an AaronFitzsimmons goal, lost 4-1.

The Veterans alsoreturned to action intheir divisional cupbut suffered a disap-pointing defeat 2-0away to Winchester, conceding the firstgoal within the first30 seconds.

close with two otherefforts. Hartley onthe other hand con-tinued to pose athreat. Just as the‘Croft were begin-ning to despair ofever finding the netKinney popped up toslot home from closerange to level thescore on 38 minutes.

Shortly after therestart the visitorsfound themselvesahead once again.Indecisive defendingenabled the Northforwards to getbehind the Croftback four and a neatback heel by a Northforward put the ballinto the path of anunmarked colleaguewho put it into theempty net. Croft’smisery was com-pounded whenDonohue collected aball from Curriewhich the ref ruled asa back pass and theresultant free kickwas converted.

Debutant JohnMurphy, who hadbeen introduced toreplace the injuredKev Moss, addedanother dimension tothe Croft attack andwhen he was broughtdown in the areaMike Kinney dou-bled his account

from the spot. TheCroft were now driv-ing forward and therewas an air ofinevitability aboutthe equaliser when itcame, withCarruthers pokingthe ball home after agoalmouth scramble.

Most observersnow felt that theCroft would go on towin but were leftaghast when threeLiverpool Northattackers were leftunmarked for one ofthem to calmly headin at the far post froma corner with min-utes to go. The dramahad not finished, however, and theCroft camp werefurious in the closingseconds when whatlooked like a push inthe back in the Northarea was notpenalised and in thehail of protests thatfollowed Carrutherswas sent off for dis-sent.

Because of the fail-ure to take chances theteams went in level athalf-time. The restartsaw Eddie Baker onfor Flanagan who had

sustained an injury inthe first half. Not longinto the half two min-utes of defensive mad-ness struck the Croftagain in almost a car-bon copy of the previ-ous week when directfrom a corner the APHforward found himselfcompletely unmarkedand gratefully noddedhis side in front. Lessthan two minutes laterpoor marking from across saw APH doubletheir lead with an easyheader at the far post.

The visitors fought

back heroically andwere doing all theycould to get back inthe game but APHwere looking solid.Almost out of the bluethe Croft skipper,Finnegan, forced theball home after ascramble following acorner making for anexciting climax. Croftthrew the kitchen sinkat the home defencebut could not get anequaliser. McGannblasted a late free-kickover the bar the tie waslost and the Croft’s

exit from this cup wassealed. By a twist offate the two teams willmeet again in the nextround of the GeorgeMahon Cup andStoneycroft will behoping for better for-tune then.
