However, it does seem incredible to think that our first edi- tion was published six years ago this month. What started off as a “bright idea” when we were work- ing together at the Liverpool Echo came to fruition in July 2006 and we started off by distributing 8000 copies of the West Derby Link throughout West Derby & Croxteth Park. We’ve since gone from strength to strength and follow- ing the launch of the South Liverpool Link in August 2007, The Liverpool LINK now has a total monthly distribution of 35,000. If someone had told us that six years ago we’d have said it was way beyond our wildest dreams and expectations! As it is, we have firmly established our- selves as a favourite independent local publication. We remain a totally independent business and are the first to recognise that the success of The Link is entirely down to you - our readers and our advertisers. So we say a very big thank you to you all for your constant support and loyalty over the last six years and for the trust and con- fidence you have placed in us. We also thank you, our readers, for the way in which you have supported our advertisers. The old adage that if you stand still in business then you end up going backwards is especially true these days and IT’S OUR 6th BIRTHDAY!! as many of you are aware, we have made some exciting changes to the LINK. In the last 12 months we have become tabloid-size and have also increased our overall distribu- tion in West Derby and South Liverpool by 6,000 (to 35,000 in total). We are absolutely delighted by the great response we have had and how you have all accepted the new look LINK so positively - it was a huge decision for us so it’s really great to get such wonder- ful comments. So in thanking all our readers and advertis- ers we’d again like to pass on our sincere thanks to: • All our regular contributors: Stephen Guy (whose wonderful local history articles con- tinue to inform and entertain - we don’t know how he keeps coming up with such great articles!), Jim Stanway (South Liverpool FC), Peter Harrison (Alder F.C.), the lads from Stoneycroft FC and of course Peter (Moira’s husband) who does all our competitions/quizzes and so on and who writes and checks many of our articles for us. • Vic and Joan; our typesetters and designers. • Tony and his team; our distributors • Joe and Irene; for your continued assistance and moral support and for coming up with the great name THE LINK. Here’s to the next six years!! Best wishes and many thanks to you all, Moira & Dawn The streets were full of life with the cries of hawkers, the babble of voices, the rumble of wheels and the clopping of horses’ hooves. Children enteredwork almost as soonas they could walk.Almost anyone couldopen an ale housewhich were patron-ised by young andold alike.

Cheap takeawayfood, hot and cold, was plentiful. Veryfew rules and regula-tions restricted peo-ple and businesses.

Wages were lowand hours long, poverty was rife andhousing oftendeplorable.

The very poorestfamilies crowdedinto one room inappalling garrets –furniture was often aluxury. After a dayworking and livingon the streets, manywent home only atbed time and someslept in straw ratherthan a bed.

by Stephen Guy

Although it wastiny, 95 High Streetin Wavertree had abig claim to fame.Until the last familymoved out in 1925 itwas the smallesthouse in England.

It is pictured on atinted postcard inEdwardian timeswhen it was still ahouse. It seemsamazing that peopleonce lived here withchildren raised in itsminute confines.

However, it is sig-nificant that it wasnext door to a coffeehouse (later a pub)and on a bustlingstreet where the resi-dents would havespent much of theirwaking hours.

As can be seen, thehouse seems to havebeen built (about1850) in an alleyway.Just six foot wide and14 ft deep, a coupleare said to havebrought up their eightchildren within its

walls.The interior stairs

were 16 inches wideso that large peoplecould only go up anddown by turningsideways.

The little houseremained empty foryears before beingincorporated into theCock and Bottle pubin 1952. Its separateexterior facade isretained but has beenaltered over theyears.

Britain’s smallesthouse in its original

condition stands onthe quayside atConwy, North Wales.

The six foot by 10ft house is mucholder than theWavertree residence– it was inhabitedfrom the 16th centu-ry until 1900.

Liverpool and its near neighboursare so full of talent and originalitythat they are now legendary allover the world.

If you live on Merseyside you probablyknow somebody famous, are related tosomebody famous or went to school withsomebody famous. If not, then it’s morethan likely that you are famous yourself!

Christine Dawe was so fascinated by allthe celebrities of our region that in 2008she commemorated our prominent citi-zens in her book ‘Liverpool’s Own’.However, she soon found that the list wasendless and just one book wasn’t enough. So now she has followed up with

‘Merseyside’s Own’, still includingprominent Liverpudlians but now joinedby folks and forefathers from Southport,St. Helens, Runcorn and parts of Wirral.

The books feature not only stars ofmusic and sport but people of note cultur-ally, medically and politically - and bothbooks have a rich smattering ofhumourists and eccentrics. Following thepopularity of our very own Ken Dodd,Bessie Braddock, Steve Gerrard and, more historically, William Gladstone,William Roscoe and Kitty Wilkinson, notforgetting the fabulous Red Rum,Christine now entertains us with ‘the sto-ries behind the stories’ of our region’s

greatest beauties such as EmmaHamilton, mistress of Lord Nelson, KimCattrall, star of ‘Sex & The City’ andAmy Jackson, the 19 year-old Prescot girlwho is already a glamorous Bollywoodstar.

Brains as well as beauty are represent-ed by Judge Rose Heilbron, Dr AnnBieznek and Booker Prize winning authorBeryl Bainbridge. The world of nature isillustrated by the red squirrels of Formbyand the origins of Knowsley Safari Park, while animals in sport feature withMirabel Topham at Aintree Racecourse.Showbiz characters Doctor Who, HildaOgden and Harry Potter all have their

Christine is keen to point out, however, that these two books arenot just a list of achievements:“CV’s can be very boring without agood helping of gossip to spice them

up” she says “and in both volumes, factual events take second place tothe fascinating backgrounds, child-hoods and, above all, the typicalScouse humour involved in all theseportraits.

You’d be amazed at some of theoutrageous behaviour and naughty

jokes by people such as Sir ThomasBeecham who, on the surface, might appear stuffy andpompous!”.

“People keep telling me what use-ful presents these books make forrelatives interested in local history”continues Christine. “Especially

those who have moved away but stilllove the North West”.

“Oh, these Englishhomes, what delightfulplaces they are! I wonderhow many people liveand die in the workhouse, having no other home, because other peoplehave a great deal morehome than enough!

“However, MrsHeywood is a good andkindhearted lady and wehad a pleasant dinner.”

GENERALKNOWLEDGE

QUIZ

Horseshoes have been considered asymbol of good luck since the 4th cen-tury. In the past most people in Britainhad a horseshoe hanging in theirhomes, especially above a door, as thiswas thought to keep the Devil away.

In Britain horseshoes must be hung with theprongs facing upwards ‘or the luck will runout’. In many other countries it is the exactopposite, the horseshoe hangs with the prongsdown so that the luck will pour out on to you.

Horseshoes are made of steel, iron, or alu-minium and there are many different kinds tosuit the need or work of the horse. The personwho constructs the shoes is the farrier and s/hespecialises in making and fitting the shoes, whereas a blacksmith, by trade, crafts any-thing made out of metal.

It is traditional to give a bride a horseshoeon her wedding day, and how much better togive a ‘real’ one, rather than a plastic or card-board imitation.

Maureen Bevan has specialised for manyyears in the supply of decorative horseshoesand told The LINK: “I have been workingwith horseshoes for many years. I collect themfrom a farrier then clean and paint them. Theyare then personalised and decorated to yourown specification. Horseshoes are alwaysrecognised as good luck symbols and makeunusual and personal presents. My horseshoeshave proven popular for new homes, specialbirthdays, anniversaries, exam congratula-tions, and of course for weddings. They areboxed and delivered (within a reasonable dis-tance) for just £7.50. Normal postage isapproximately £2 extra”.

Pictured are the team (with yours truly backrow second left) and players and supporterscelebrating the win after the game.

In a great end tothe season, theAlder FC Vet’sSunday teamclinched the pres-tigious NationalUmbro Over 45’sShield. Playing onone of the hottestdays of the year, they beat a teamof pedigree,Kirby Muxloefrom Leicester, who were beatenin last year’s finalby Liverpoolteam Nicosia.

The game wasplayed at NuneatonTown FC and, cheered on by a goodfollowing who madethe journey by coach, the team won 1-0.Alder dominated thefirst half and made anumber of chancesthey were unable toconvert. The crucialmoment came in the22nd minute whenjoint player-managerTommy Murphy wasfouled by the Kirbyright midfielder. From the resultantfree kick, Tommyplayed a great ballwhich John Garritycleverly headed on

for Tommy Dohertyto convert at the farpost. Shortly after,Tommy struck thepost as the teamsought that all impor-tant second goal.

The second halfwas a more evenaffair, with Barnseyand Kevin Walshproviding a greatshield in centraldefence. John Boyd,Tosh, Polo and JoeyHunter worked hardin midfield and thegame seemed to bereaching a jubilantc o n c l u s i o n .However, the crucialmoment came withthree minutes to go,when from a corner aKirby forward pow-ered a headertowards the top cor-ner, only for ourkeeper Morsey tomake a great reflexsave. The whistlewent and victory wasours.

Special thanks tojoint player-managerJohn Turner, GordonLee for admin on theday, sponsor PeterKay of Liver PlantHire and all the sup-porters who made thetrip.
