STRANGE TALES

Mr FunnyDimples slumpedin the batteredarmchair, put hisfeet on a stool andsighed deeply.

It had been a par-ticularly bad day.Several factors hadled to his enforcedretirement from thecircus – age andrheumatism beingjust two. Audiencesdidn’t laugh anymore.

His final year hadbeen a nightmare. Itwas 1932 and theimpact of the talkieshad seen more andmore people headingfor the ever-growingnumbers of cinemas.

People no longerwanted to huddle in abig top in SeftonPark when theycould be pamperedin a picture palace.

He was 60 but felthe could go on keep-ing the paying publicin stitches. However,he knew that clownswere only as good astheir last pratfall.

Col SilasHighjinks, the circusboss, summoned MrFunny Dimples intohis gaudily-paintedcaravan one eveningafter a particularlypainful performance.

The Coloneloffered him a bigcigar and spoke ofthe need for newideas, fresh bloodand originality. Inother words he wasfired.

After more than 30years Mr FunnyDimples became

plain Bert Bottomleyonce more.

Supported by asmall pension, hewas elected honorarysecretary of theLeague of the NoLonger Adorable. This Liverpool-based charity lookedafter the needs of

actors and entertain-ers who had fallen onhard times.

That was fiveyears ago. Thingsstarted well when hehad discovered alatent talent fororganising peopleand events.

Bert still thoughtof himself as MrFunny Dimples, referring to facialfeatures revealedwhen he covered hisface with whitemake-up.

He shifted his feetoff the stool andgazed wistfullythrough the Frenchwindows lookingover the lawn behindhis lodgings. The sunwas setting in a clearred-tinged Liverpoolsky.

What a day! Firsthe had to sit throughthe planned come-back of Vera and herAmazing Poodles. Inthe afternoon he wascollared by HarryHowden who insist-

ed on playing his HappyHarmonica. This was followedby piles of paperwork.

He was always saddened when

he saw the miserable faces ofentertainers off-stage and deviseda plan.

“Laughter is the best medi-

cine,” he told the nextmeeting of League com-mittee. To back it up, heannounced the return of MrFunny Dimples.

He secured a booking ata run-down suburban the-atre only because heoffered to perform for noth-ing.

Mr Funny Dimples strut-ted about the stage, a massof ruffles and brightcolours. His antics raised abreeze of laughter from thewell-oiled audience.

He had planned his exitmeticulously – disappear-ing in a puff of smokethrough a trap door.

That was the last timeanyone saw Mr FunnyDimples. A search of thetheatre revealed no trace ofthe clown and he remainson the missing persons fileto this day.

BENEFITS

Dear Friends,Easter is on itsway so in thism o n t h ’ s‘Fighting Fit’campaign, I amgoing to sharewith you anarticle aboutchocolate writ-ten by CharlesPoliquin, who isregarded as oneof the topstrength andc o n d i t i o n i n gcoaches inAmerica.

Eating chocolateused to be causefor plaguing us allwith guilt. Well, closet chocolateeaters, you can allcome out now!Recent scientificresearch tells usthat chocolate isrich in anti-oxi-dants calledflavonols. Theseanti-oxidants pro-tect our arteriesand prostateglands, reduceinflammation andincrease sensationsof well -being. Thesame flavonols arefound in green teaand in certain typesof berries.

THE RULESOF

CHOCOLATE

Of course, youshould allow somerules when choos-ing the rightchocolate for you. Here are rules to

follow to make iteven more guilt-free.

1. The darker thechocolate, the bet-ter it is. Look for abrand that stipu-lates at least 70%cocoa. Most peo-ple find 85%brands way too bit-ter to eat.

2. Read theentire label. Watchout for ingredientssuch as high fruc-tose, corn syrupand hydrogenatedfats. These ingredi-ents will reduce thehealth benefits ofchocolate.

3. Keep the milkout of it. Studieshave revealed thatdrinking a wholeglass of milk withyour chocolate isenough to blockabsorption of alla n t i - o x i d a n t s , .Stay away frommilk chocolateproducts.

4. Keep the serv-ings small. Stick toservings of about15-30 grams at atime, one servingper day. Duringmenopause, youcan possibly have4 servings a day, providing you areexercising 4 timesweekly.

Hope this helpsor gives you aguideline for overEaster. Have agreat Easter andsee you nextmonth. Paul

Well, what a winterit has been. The mildstart and suddendrop in temperaturehas caused an end-less amount of prob-lems on our region’slawns.

Following a wet sum-

opportunity to take over.Scarification, aerationand an application of agood quality SpringLawn Treatment is thebest thing for it.

Horseshoes havebeen considered asymbol of goodluck since the 4thcentury. In thepast most peoplein Britain had ahorseshoe hang-ing in theirhomes, especiallyabove a door, asthis was thoughtto keep the Devilaway.

In Britain horse-shoes must be hungwith the prongs fac-ing upwards ‘or theluck will run out’. Inmany other countriesit is the exact oppo-site; the horseshoehangs with theprongs down so thatthe luck will pour outon to you.

Horseshoes aremade of steel, iron,or aluminium andthere are many dif-ferent kinds to suitthe need or work ofthe horse. The per-son who constructsthe shoes is the farri-er and s/he specialis-es in making and fit-ting the shoes, whereas a black-smith, by trade,

crafts anything madeout of metal.

It is traditional togive a bride a horse-shoe on her weddingday, and how muchbetter to give a ‘real’one, rather than aplastic or cardboardimitation.

Maureen Bevanhas specialised formany years in thesupply of decorativehorseshoes and toldThe LINK: “I havebeen working withhorseshoes for manyyears. I collect themfrom a farrier thenclean and paint them. They are then per-sonalised and deco-rated to your owns p e c i f i c a t i o n .Horseshoes arealways recognised asgood luck symbolsand make unusualand personal pres-ents. My horseshoeshave proven popularfor new homes, spe-cial birthdays, anniversaries, examcongratulations, andof course for wed-dings. They areboxed and delivered(within a reasonabledistance) for just £10.

LOST KEYSREPLACED

I decided back inJune 2011 that Ihad to do some-thing about myweight (weighing22 stone and 3pounds at the time)before my CivilCeremony, whichhad been bookedfor June 1st 2012.

I was also inspiredby my youngerbrother Simon whohad excellent weightlosses by followingthe plan for the previ-ous year.

I joined theSlimming World classrun by John Kelly atthe Halfway House inJune 2011 and was sur-prised and amazed atthe amounts and por-tion sizes of the foodsthat you are allowed toeat - not having todeprive myself of myfavourite foods likepasta, potatoes, rice, meat, fish and lots oflovely fruits and veg-etables, even choco-late!! The Extra Easyplan is exactly what itstates - totally flexibleand allows me to workthe plan around mylifestyle.

To date I have lost5 stone and I am feel-ing great. I would sayto anyone who isthinking of joining agroup that it is one ofthe best things I haveever done and I’mnow reaping thehealth benefits frommy weight loss as Iam no longer on anymedication for asth-ma or blood pressure(and I was takingmedication for over20 years!). Adding

TOWN CLERK’SRETREAT

by Stephen Guycontinued from page 1town to the pleasant open spaces of Woolton.

He built a lovely mansion called Knoll Park(now a convent) off Church Road, at that time inisolated countryside. It was a haven of calm awayfrom political in-fighting and municipal dramas.

The main entrance to Thomas’s Regency pilewas guarded by a tiny lodge built in the classicalstyle (pictured), reflecting the grace of the mainhouse.

A few years later Thomas found himself playinga key role in bringing about change. CorporationCommissioners were appointed to carry out inves-tigations into municipal business.

Thomas spent most of November 1833 beinggrilled by the Commissioners about Liverpool’saffairs.

He performed so well that civic leaders and res-idents presented him with a silver table cande-labrum which no doubt took pride of place atKnoll Park.

In 1835 the Municipal Reform Bill swept awayoutdated practices and paved the way for moderndemocracy.

Liverpool’s outdated Corporation wasrevamped and Thomas lost his job. He did not goquietly and claimed massive compensation of£77,108 (about £5.5 million in today’s money).

Thomas, who had been paid £7,400 a year, finally agreed on a pension of £2,500 for life inJuly 1836.

He did not enjoy it for long as he died in Calais, where he had gone for his health, just two monthslater.

John Foster was also axed from his Corporationpost in the reforms and settled for a more modestpension of £500. Everybody else kept their jobs.

After a brightstart to 2013 withtwo consecutivevictories, the opti-mism generatedfrom those gamessoon dissipated asa run of fourstraight defeatshas seen the clubeliminated fromtwo cups and sinkto the bottom ofthe league.

That said, the twogames in the I-Zingari Cup and theGeorge Mahon Cup(both against APH;lost 1-2 & 0-1) wereevenly fought andcould have quite eas-ily gone the otherway. The leaguegame against EastVilla was the arche-typal game of twohalves as Stoneycroftfailed to get started inthe opening half andconceded two poorgoals, but in the sec-ond half showed spir-it and determinationthat deserved greaterreward than the one

goal they managed topull back.

Last week’s gameagainst Red Rum wasa sorry tale of woe.Played on a cold, wetand miserable Marchday, Stoneycroft’sperformance was onethat matched theweather. Havingtaken the lead on 15minutes after a rea-sonably bright start,Red Rum started toboss the midfieldand, coupled with aninability byStoneycroft to retainpossession, it onlybecome a matter oftime before Red Rumtook control and theyeventually run out 4-1 winners to extendCroft’s losing run. Tocomplete a miserableafternoon DylanRobinson, makinghis first full start forthe club, sustained abroken leg and willbe out for the rest ofthe season.

We wish Dylan aspeedy recovery andhope he is soon backplaying.

STONEYCROFTFC - RECENT

RESULTS TELLA SAD TALE

Since my last arti-cle, the first teamhave remainedunbeaten with closeback-to-back winsagainst BRNESC -Timmy Naylor onthe score sheet - anda 2-1 victory againstEdge Hill (TerryTynan and AntonyWong).

They now have arealistic chance of pro-

motion to the premierdivision and with cru-cial games against topplaced teams loomingthese games maydecide their season.

The third teamrecorded the win oftheir season so far, defeating previouslyunbeaten Jaymac 3-1,Phil King netting twiceand Tom Mohamothograbbing the importantgoals in a great teamperformance.

The Vets inconsisten-cy continued with a fine5-1 victory againstMidden Vets - SteveStewart back on thescore sheet twice,Bernie Manning andMark Carney. However, the following week, adisappointing belowpar performance saw aheavy 5-0 defeat toHillfoot leave them midtable.

Despite a 4-3home defeatagainst title rivalsMallaby, SouthLiverpool FCremain on coursefor promotion tothe first divisionof the WestCheshire League, after threestraight winsagainst teams inrelegation danger.

The defeat toMallaby was, ironi-cally, one of South’sbest performances forsome time, dominat-ing the second halfafter going in at halftime 3-2 down aftergoals from TomKinsella and AlexWoodcock. Anequaliser fromWoodcock looked tohave got the teamsomething from thegame after hitting thewoodwork three timesbut the fast Mallabyforwards were alwaysa danger and grabbeda fourth near the end.

Since then, Southhave not been entire-ly convincing buthave eventuallyeased past MossleyHill Reserves, AFCBebington Athleticand Marshalls. A 4-1win against MossleyHill saw goals fromTom Kinsella,Cameron Dalton andtwo from centre backAndrew Tull.

A 2-1 win at AFCBebington saw AlexWoodcock scoretwice, his secondcoming with only 10minutes to go. A 5-3win at home toMarshalls saw the

The reserves havebeen preparing for aleague cup semi-final at the time ofgoing to press andhave an outsidechance of promotion.Despite a 3-2 loss atNeston Nomads withtwo goals form PatKelly, two wins overrelegation candi-dates, and otherresults elsewhere, have left the teamwith a chance of get-ting into the top two.

A 3-0 win at UptonAA Reserves withgoals from DeanSayer, Kieran Parkerand Adam Brittlesand a 7-1 home winagainst bottom clubEllesmere PortReserves with goalsfrom Sharif Yusuf, two from FrancisEvans, Pat Kelly,James Gaskill, Adam

Brittles and GerardForde produced sixwelcome points.
