Dusk fell as thethree gardenersspread tiny bluepellets overthe neatflower beds full ofyoung marigoldsand other tenderblooms.

Suddenly a manburst out of a bush, run-ning and waving hisarms. He shoutedhoarsely: “Stop this atonce – leave themalone”.

Before the garden-ers could react the in-truder had snatchedtheir boxes of slug pel-lets and vanished intothe shrubbery.

At home he slumpedinto his favourite chairand told his long-suf-fering wife about thislatest escapade.

Bertram Stone wasa man who loved slugs. He had taken it uponhimself to protect hisbeloved gastropods bydirect action, setting upthe Slug ProtectionSociety to achieve hisaims.

Although the grouphad a manifesto andcode of conduct he hadnot succeeded in re-cruiting any othermembers.

Alice was sympa-thetic and supportive,of course, but had notsigned up. She actual-ly loathed the slimy in-truders that ran riot intheir garden where on-ly hardy ferns and

STRANGE TALES

E SLUG PROTECTION SOCIETYshrubs grew.

She tolerated theendless hours her hus-band spent in theSluggery, a largegreenhouse whereevery species of Britishslug was kept in securecomfort.

He would often poreover illustrations ofslugs with a magnify-ing glass clutched inwhite-gloved hands.

Bertram’s missionhad evolved from hisd a y s w i t h t h eLiverpool Society ofthe Time Rich. It wastheir project countingthe sea shells in RedWharf Bay that hadbeen the catalyst.

“What does it allmean?” he had askedhimself after spend-ing interminable hoursporing over half anacre of sand.

The following weekhe decided what to dowhile working in theshop nobody visited. Aspark of inspiration, aflash of penetrating in-sight made him realise

that slugs – those mostunloved creatures –would become his mis-sion.

Aweek after his au-dacious pellet-snatch-ing raid he was sittingreading the paper to thebuzz of a solitary bee.

Giant Killer Slug

Poised To CreateHavoc in Your Gardenscreamed the headlinewith a picture of a fatslug consuming atomato.

Bertram was movedto tears of compas-sion. He read that theSpanish Stealth Slug

had been identified inCheshire.

His thoughts racedas he became more ex-cited – they were head-ing his way. Bertramknew what he must do– the newcomers hadto be defended at allcosts.

One night he re-turned triumphantlyhome with a jar filledwith Spanish slugs hehad discovered on thefringes of DelemereForest.

He released theminto a special enclosureand watched with lov-

ing, devoted eyes.Three nights later

he did not return for hisusual bedtime drink. The greenhouse wassilent as Alice nerv-ously opened the door.

She gasped as she

saw two feet stickingout from behind a wa-ter butt. Bertram waslying of his back, hislifeless eyes staring atthe moon.

Alice saw the silvertrails of slime leading

into his gaping mouthand knew there wasnothing she could do.

Although we can show ourappreciation of dear old dadany day of the year, it’s nice

to know that there’s a spe-cial day devoted to dadseverywhere.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY - JUNE 16THIn many countries around the

world, including Britain,America, Canada and much ofAsia, Father’s Day is celebratedon the 3rd Sunday in June, whichthis year falls on Sunday 16thJune.

Like many other formal cele-bration days, “Father’s Day”, aswe now know it, was started inthe United States, when a ladynamed Sonora Smart Dodd wasso touched by a Mother’s Daysermon she heard in 1909 that shedecided to dedicate a special dayto her own dad, William. Thefirst Father’s Day was celebratedon June 19th 1910, William’sbirthday, and such a good ideawas bound to catch on as peoplearound the world wished to hon-our the devotion and love of theirown fathers.

So make 167th June really spe-cial for you and your dad!Whether it’s a card, present, orjust some time spent together, have a lovely day. If you findyourself stuck for gift ideas, whynot have a look here in The LINK.You may want to treat Dad to alovely meal at one of the restau-rants advertised or he may enjoy agreat day out on a wonderfulsteam train journey through thecountryside.

Have a great Father’s Day andbest wishes to dads everywherefrom all of us at The LINK.

The first team crowned the end to a greatseason by beating Collegiate 2-0 in thefinal of the Roy Wade Cup. In a matchplayed at Ford Motors ground in Cronton, the uneven playing surface initiallyproved a leveller for both teams.

Alder started the stronger side and AntonyWong played a great ball through for Paul O’Harewho was unlucky with his effort. Alder werethen unlucky to have a penalty appeal dismissedwhen Antony Wong appeared to be fouled inthe area after a searching run. Full backs MickRoberts and Gary Tynan were pushing upstrongly on the flanks. The breakthrough camein the 20th minute when Jobo seemed to be chas-ing a lost cause down the left flank. He man-aged to resist two challenges and cut inside withhis low shot beating the Collegiate keeper toopen the scoring.

Collegiate, with Tom Owens prominent in mid-field, then took the game to Alder and a suc-cession of corners saw them skim the crossbar. The Alder centre back pairing of John Boardmanand John Elias were immense down the middleas all efforts were thwarted. When called uponScott was looking a safe pair of hands in goaland Joe Reynolds was holding the central mid-field together with a strong performance.

The second half again saw a period of Alderpressure, much to the delight of their travellingfans who were encamped in the bar and stand.Timmy Naylor and Keith were making prob-ing runs down the wing but with 20 minutes leftthe game was still in the balance. Guy came onas substitute to provide further problems up frontand the last 15 minutes saw the introduction ofAntony Barnes. The game was won with 5 min-

by the players in ahard-fought campaignthat turned into a re-markable achieve-ment. Team manager,Gary Heaney, declared“Obviously with it be-ing our first seasonwe’re delighted tohave won promotion”.Although this was ateam success therewere individual per-formances worthy ofnote: John Marshallnetted twenty-twotimes from his mid-field slot and this wasmatched by forwardGary Hughes, turningthem into an amaz-ingly prolific goalscoring duo. BillyMangan turned out ina variety of positionsand put in sterling per-

formances and neverlet the team down.

All at the club wereparticularly pleasedthat the Vets had beenable to move up to thetop tier, given that itwas the team’s firstyear in existence, andhas proved to be thebright spot of the sea-son. Club ChairmanKenny Morrison com-mented: “The Vets’performance has beenoutstanding and theyshould be congratu-lated on their achieve-ment. I am delightedfor them. I believe itvindicates our deci-sion to start a Vets sideand I hope their suc-cess continues andspreads to our otherteams”.
