LINK-Magazine is continuing to grow in FY4 and its nice to speak to more local businesses recently, as in other areas of FY we are the leading FREE community magazine and as more local connections are made the better and more useful we become, so if you have something to add we want to hear. Non Surgical Cosmetic Treatments

Non Surgical treatment has become increasingly popular for both women and men over the past decade. Indeed a troll through the internet can leave you confused and baffled as to which clinic to choose and what treatments to choose help improve your appearance. I have chosen the two commonest non surgical treatments offered by most clinics, that is, Botox and Dermal fillers.

Botox (anti-wrinkle injection) is mainly used to treat the upper face and improve expression lines on the forehead, brow and around the eyes. It works by relaxing the muscle in these areas, hence soften the lines formed over the years. With regular treatment lines can actually disappear. Indeed there are a number of different brands of anti-wrinkle injections but they all essentially work in the same way.

Dermal fillers on the other hand is generally used to treat the lower part of the face especially lines around the nose, mouth, upper lip and chin areas. Dermal fillers are also used to give volume and shape to both upper and lower lips. There are also a huge range of branded fillers but the most well know is Restylane. Fillers are injected along the facial lines to help lift and smoothen their appearance. Essentially they replace the hyaluronic acid in the skin lost with age. Results can be very user dependent so make sure you choose a fully qualified practitioner.

In 1982 they joined the newly formed British Hockey League (BHL) which has replaced the three top flight regional leagues in the United

Kingdom, to form one top flight league. In 1982-83 they finished second.

The Seagulls then joined the newly created second tier of the BHL, The British Hockey League Division One. In their first season in the First Division, 1983-84 they finished in sixth place out of eleven teams. The following season was more successful as the Seagulls finished in third place.

The 1986-87 seasons saw the Seagulls finish in the lower half of the Division One table, the 11th out of sixteen teams.

In 1993, Ice Hockey came to an end in Blackpool after 42 years, because the rink at the Pleasure Beach was considered too small to host competitive ice hockey. For a short while the Seagulls name was retained as the club and some of its players moved to the Blackburn Arena. But within a couple of years the Seagulls name was dropped completely.

Now twenty years after the disband, Simon Pearce (Head Coach) alongside old Seagull Gary Shearman, the Seagulls have been reborn with a new team in the brand new Sub Zero Arena in Cleveleys. LINK-Magazine was asked by Adam Bradley who works at Wyre Building Supplies about sponsorship and as we already sponsor two local football teams Fleetwood Gym and Bispham Junior Football Federation, we thought why not sponsor on ice! The Seagulls were formed in 1951 and played in the Midland Intermediate League from 1951 to 1955. In the 1955-56 seasons they lost just one match all year. Music school goes from strength to strength

BLACKPOOL MUSIC ACADEMY MUSIC FOR ALLFor many years, the Adult Education Centre at Carr Head Lane in leafy Poulton-Le-Fylde, a small market town just outside Blackpool was host to musical keyboard tuition. In the authority’s wisdom, they decided that all courses should include examinations and many students in a variety of subjects

felt that the pressure was put on what had been previously a “leisure” subject. When the keyboard classes eventually closed in 2004 John Shaw and his 40 fellow students plus their tutor Jim Lomas were determined that they should not be deprived of their hobby and that their learning activities should continue and John shaw formed a committee to discuss the possibilities of forming their own music school.

The original committee was set up and soon managed to secure funding from the Lottery “Awards For All” and various other sources both local and further afield. A home was found at the Springfield Methodist Church in Bispham (North shore), Blackpool. Several spacious rooms adjoining the church meant that large classes could be accommodated and the first keyboard classes started in January 2006.

The classes commenced with 22 students and two keyboard tutors – Stephen Austin (a name familiar in the organ world as a performer and first class teacher) and Jim Lomas, a professional musician and teacher of many years experience.

And now in 2011, Blackpool Music Academy has grown from strength to strength and funding from the Liverpool Foundation as enabled BMA to widen its facilities to include not only group tuition for keyboard, guitar and Music Theory but also 1-2-1 tuition for piano, organ, percussion, vocal training, and other instruments whether at the Springfield Church location or in the pupils’ own home during most days of the week.

A team of qualified and experienced teachers are available for beginners, intermediate and advanced students whether

children or adults.

Blackpool Music Academy became a community interest company in February 2007 then in September 2007 BMA was linked to the charity “Blackpool Music School”.

Recently, examinations have been introduced, but this time the students can choose to study for these or not. For guitar and percussion the “Rock School” syllabus is

used and for keyboard, piano and organ students, either the ABRSM or ICMA syllabus is favoured. The range and style of music covered around the various classes is amazing – from Bach to Beatles, from George Gershwin to Lady Ga-Ga!!

The academy has achieved 100% pass rate in all

examinations taken and is very proud of this. The academy is the only music school to cover all ages from 08 to 80 plus under one roof.

Since January 2010 it has started to do outreach work with the mind organization in Blackpool and recently has moved into helping care homes with activities learning the keyboard music. It has also secured the use of the Centre for independent living on Mondays and shortly Thursdays helping the deprived and disabled in music therapy vocal guitar keyboard.

The Academy this year 2011 is about to invest in its own music centre with a three hundred thousand pounds investment it has secured a mortgage through The social Enterprise Lone Fund for the building, CSL furniture has donated a car park for a 2 year period for 30 cars. This is been placed in the south shore area at the end of Waterloo road of Blackpool. Accommodating facilities such as using the building for all types of music tuition, a charity music shop, coffee shop and a full recording sound proof studio, also having other uses as a community centre etc The academy is into its 5 year period and has 100 students 7 tutors all with special quality’s in teaching. The beating heart of BlackpoolOne of the country’s most iconic buildings is feeling the love. A 9metre wide LED heart has been installed on Blackpool Tower and is now shining on the Promenade.

The heart structure is covered in 900 programmable LEDs, the same as those currently being used at the top of the Tower.

They can be controlled to create 16 million colours. The heart can change colour, rotate, fade and shimmer. From a simple red beating heart to a green St Patrick’s Day special, many options are available.

Cllr Graham Cain, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Culture, said: “The new lighting that we’ve installed at the top of the Tower this year has been really popular and this will enhance it even further.

“The idea behind the heart is part connected to the “I heart BPL branding”

used by visitBlackpool but it’s also to identify that we’ve built Festival House, a venue on the Promenade for weddings and civil partnerships.

“The heart will shine all year round and will be programmed to mark special events.

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to install the heart in time for all the half term visitors. We’ve got visitors that return every year so every year we need to give them something new and exciting to enjoy.”

The heart can operate as either a standalone feature or can be controlled from Festival House so it can be linked to specific ceremonial activities if required by arrangement.

Facing West and mounted on the Tower at between 128ft and 165 ft the Heart overlooks the headland centrepiece the newly unveiled “Comedy Carpet”.

Head of Merlin entertainments Blackpool Iain Hawkins said: “This signifies that The Blackpool Tower really is the beating heart of the town and the way everything is coming together now all of Merlin’s 8 attractions are open and the promenade is almost finished.

“One of the things we talk about at Merlin is sparkle. We have opened lots of new attractions in the town and one of the things we want to provide is added sparkle.

“The new high tech lighting means we can turn the top of the Tower and now the heart into any colour and make it a real beacon for Blackpool.

“The Blackpool Tower is so iconic and the first thing everyone spots on the way into Blackpool so having an illuminated heart for all to see couldn’t be more fitting.”

The Blackpool Illuminations shine until Sunday 6 November.

Visitors are being encouraged to donate a pound per person to the Illuminations fund.
