ALL WELCOME New Members Welcome!
Can I just say............. Wise men looked up and saw a star which pointed out to them the way they had to go. This week John the Baptist, appearing yet again, points out the way we need to go by pointing out Jesus himself. He is the true light that we need to let shine ever more brightly in our lives, just as, at this time of year, the light seems to grow, the days become longer and the nights shorter.
Our observance of the weather and the amount of light in the world has affected the way we pray, and what we believe, in subtle ways. The Feast of the Birthday of John the Baptist, the man of whom we hear even more this week, his main feast falls at Midsummer. A happy time, perhaps, but from then on the light in the world starts to diminish. John himself said that he must decrease while the Lord must increase. But we seem to get a sort of mini-John the Baptist season at this time of year. He was baptising Jesus in the Jordan last week and this week he’s pointing out the Lamb of God. But really, at this time of year, the Feast of Christmas, the Feast of the Lord’s Nativity takes precedence. That feast, of course, occurs around mid-Winter. From mid-Winter the light in the world starts to increase. It’s the light of Christ, Christ himself who must increase like the light at this time of the year and this man called John, who keeps appearing, only appears to point this out. He points out the Lamb of God, so already pointing us towards Easter. He points to Christ, as do all our readings today, and prompts us to ask ourselves just what we believe about this Christ.
Long ago the prophet Isaiah would also do some pointing out of the Christ, the Messiah, this anointed
servant. The Suffering Servant of Isaiah, of whom we hear in our First Reading, says that the Lord "formed me as his servant from the womb." This recalls the life of Jeremiah, who early on was called to be a prophet. It also recalls John the Baptist, that man again, who leapt in the womb at the Visitation, rejoicing at the presence of the unborn Jesus. The task of evangelization transcends and unites generations, giving them a common hope. John, even in the womb, demonstrates that no one is too young to be involved in witnessing to Christ. We can all do some pointing ourselves, pointing out Jesus, the Lamb of God, by the way in which we live. We need then, like John, to say that we must grow smaller while Jesus must grow ever greater in our lives, letting the light we received at Baptism shine ever more brightly. Fr. Joe

Pastoral Associate Update
Nurturing relationships has been very much the connecting thread of my week whether it be first communion parents and children, the Justice and Peace Commission, clergy, Synod members, parishioners, administrators, teachers or my own family and friends. Although we may wear different hats, the “who we are” deep inside remains constant and I need reminding that ‘busyness’ should not detract from the most important relationship – the “who we are” with and through God. “What we are is God's gift to us. What we become is our gift to God.” quote by Eleanor Powell. God Bless, Helen. I will be at the Human Trafficking Lecture on Sunday at LACE (2-4) – hope to see some of you there.
