The family of a 28-year-old mother of two, who was found murdered in her hut at Jerome village in Malamulele last Thursday morning, say they believe she was killed for her money.

Ms Jerminah Chauke, the elder sister of the de-ceased, Ms Mihloti Norah Mabasa, said her younger sister had more than R2 000 with her when she went to sleep. “She had money from her child grant; R500 was given to her by my mother to buy food, and she also had more than R1 000 she had won in playing cards,” said Jerminah.

She said when her mother went to sleep, Mihloti was with one of her gambling mates, Mboniseni Xikweni. “Later that night, Mboniseni woke my mother up and said some people had come inside the house and shot and killed her,” said Jerminah.

However, Jerminah said her sister did not have bullet wounds and appeared to have been attacked

with another object. She said Mihloti was the pillar of the family as she used to help her mother, who is a reputable food vendor in Malamulele. Jerminah said Mihloti was a brave, strong woman and could not be overpowered easily. She said she believed she was probably attacked while asleep.

“My mother, Mthavini, is suffering from asthma and high blood pressure and most of the time she relied on Mihloti to go and assist in her business,” said Jerminah. On Sunday, angry youths from Jerome Village toyi-toyied outside the Malamulele police station, demanding the arrest of the killers of Mihloti Mabasa. The youngsters from Jerome village, who had abandoned a community meeting discussing the murder, were brandishing stones and sticks. They later went back to the village on the main road from the Malamulele police station via Malamulele town.

Baloyi said the community was still shocked by the incident. “We decided to have a meeting to discuss the incident and it was during the meeting that some youths left as they were angry. They believed that the police were reluctant to arrest certain suspects. We are going to address the youth, because whatever information we have about the case we must give it to the police and not allow disorder to reign in our com-munity,” said Baloyi. Malamulele police spokesperson WO Alson Mapindani said some young people had gone to the police station to seek information regard-ing the progress in the case. “It was not a formal march and I understand they went there in a large number but later left,” said Mapindani.

“I can confi rm that the police are investigating a case of murder, after a 28-year-old woman was found dead in Jerome last Thursday. It appears that she was stabbed with an unknown object. So far, we have questioned some people. No one has been arrested yet,” said Mapindani.

Two receive bailOn Friday (3/5), two men appeared in the Mu-sina Magistrate’s Court in connection with a case of armed robbery, which took place along Campbell Road.

Victor Muluvhu (25) and Gabriel Hlupeka Ringane (33) were arrested after they had allegedly arrived in a car at a spot where the complainant, Mr Richman Chivura, was selling cutlery.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Lt Peter Mudau, the suspects then acted as if they wanted to buy something and had run short of money. “They asked the complainant to get into the car, so that they could go to withdraw some money at an ATM,” said Lt Mudau.

Mudau explained that they drove along Campbell Road and stopped somewhere down the road. At this spot, the Muluvhu was allegdely robbed of cash and all his goods at gunpoint. “They then instructed the victim to take off all his clothes and to run down the road while he was naked,” Mudau said.

He added that the two men were later arrested. They were granted bail of R3 000 each. The case was postponed to 31 May, pending further inves-tigation.

He wanted to go out out to investigate and thought that he had even heard footsteps. His mother, however, quickly warned him not to venture out,

since it might be dangerous to do so.

The two bus drivers, a male and a female, were sleeping in the two rooms at the depot. The buses were parked right near the house.

By the time the drivers came out, a large part of the first bus had already caught fire. The male driver fumbled for the keys and slipped into the second bus. After a struggle, he managed to start the engine and drove the bus out of the gate, away from the burning one.

The other bus burnt out com-pletely and only a skeletal structure remained.

Tharaga, confi rmed the incident and said that investigations by the police were underway. “No arrests have been made at this stage,” Tharaga said.

The spokesperson of GNT, Adv Kgabo Mapotse, said that the incident was under police investigation and would be treated as sub judice, until such time that police investigations were completed.

The incident occurred at a time when the national bus strike is reaching its peak. While Satawu-affiliated bus drivers are on strike and most bus companies are hardly fer-rying commuters to and from their destinations, GNT has noticeably been on the road.

This doesn’t mean that you will get your cash back. Don’t even think about getting it back.

We want justice for Nara MashamaiteTraffi c was brought to a halt last Friday as hundreds of protesters, dressed in bright red and green, marched from the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) train station to the magistrate’s court to demand justice for the murdered Nara Mashamaite (47).

The marchers, who consisted of Transnet offi cials and members of the local community, gathered at the spot where Mashamaite, a train driver for Transnet, was brutally murdered on 4 June last year. The train had stopped close to the Makhado train station, and Mashamaite got off with her as-sistant to check whether the train had any mechanical problems. Mashamaite was allegedly fi rst raped before she was killed. Her assistant managed to fl ee.

Eleven months after her mur-

der, the suspect arrested in con-nection with her death is still in custody and his case is proceed-ing at a snail’s pace. The slow progress in the case is what sparked the march. “We want these senseless killers convicted. Let them rot in jail – rot,” said Transnet’s chief executive of-fi cer, Brian Molefe.

Molefe spoke to the marchers during a wreath-laying ceremony that was held on Friday (3rd) at the spot where Mashamaite was killed.

The suspect, Jerry Shuma (22) from Zimbabwe, was initially arrested for housebreaking in October last year, but was later accused of murdering Masha-maite. He has been in custody ever since.

Shuma has appeared in court numerous times, with his case

being postponed each time. This is apparently because the Direc-tor of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Polokwane still has to decide whether the State will prosecute Shuma or not. According to information available, a DNA sample had already been taken from Shuma and, based on the outcome of this test, the DPP will decided whether the State has a strong case or not.

Shuma briefly appeared in court shortly before the march-ers arrived at the court house. A fi nal postponement was granted by Magistrate Bennie Smith to hear the outcome of the DPP’s decision. Shuma will remain in custody until his next appearance on 7 June.

Outrage! This sums up residents’ reaction to a publicity stunt by a local Caltex filling-station owner to promote his business by painting a massive Caltex logo on one of the landmark kop-pies at Matoks along the N1 between Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and Polokwane.

The enormous Caltex logo, promoting the Caltex filling station at Botlokwa, appeared about two weeks ago. Needless to say, it has since sparked widespread condemnation from the public and, with the koppies at Matoks being of great archaeo-logical significance, left environmentalists fuming.

“Vandalism!!! Disgusting!!! Cheap stunt,” was Wilma Crous’s response on the Zoutpansberger’s Facebook page, while A D Muller wrote on the same page: “It is totally illegal ... Do Caltex think they are Boesmans ...?” Peter Schofield was as disappointed with Caltex, writing: “... tragic de-struction of our natural heritage. Prof Ben van der Waal, a well-known local environmentalist, was as upset. He said he had confronted the filling-station owner about the painting of the koppie. The owner’s response left him dumfounded. “He told me he got permission from the local chief to paint the koppie,” Van der Waal said.

Mr Alan McMurtrie of the Department of En-vironmental Affairs’ Wildlife and Trade office in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) said on Tuesday that he only found out about the painting of the koppie last Friday.

“Unfortunately, the policing side of what happened does not fall under the duties of the Wildlife and Trade Office. It should fall under Environmental Affairs’ law enforcement, but there is no law-enforcement officer for Makhado (Louis Trichardt),” McMurtrie said. Although condemning the incident, he was, however, not very shocked. “People just seem to do their own thing, despite the rules and regulations. You see it

every day; for example, people driving at 150km an hour on the N1, despite the traffic rules and regulations. It’s like that with the environment as well,” McMurtrie said.

Chevron, under which the Caltex brand is marketed in South Africa, was asked on Monday whether they were aware of the painting of the koppie and what action they had taken to rectify the situation. Ms Suzanne Pullinger, communications manager at Chevron South Africa (Pty) Limited’s head office in Cape Town, responded by email on Tuesday.

She states: “Caltex had no knowledge of this proposed activity and are opposed to it. Building strong community relationships and protecting the environment in which we operate are core values of our corporation. We have instructed the parties concerned to request its immediate removal and will be counselling them with regard to the inap-propriate and unauthorized use of our corporate brand.”

With regard to the removal of the painted sign and fears that it will have further destructive conse-quences for the environment, Pullinger says: “The removal of the sign is a complicated process and special effort has been made to minimize the impact on the environment. We ask for the patience of the community in this matter and would like to assure all parties that we are taking every precaution to ensure that the removal happens as quickly and as safely as possible.”

Wall of remembrance for fallen warders Who speaks on behalf of Tshivhase family?The unveiling of the wall of remembrance at Makhado Correctional Centre was filled with tears and weeping as the family members, particularly widows, were confronted by memories of their loved ones who had since passed on while serving in the correctional services.

The event was held last Wednesday.

The former provincial com-missioner for prisons, Gen Malesela Ramashala, gave a detailed overview of the mili-tary state and demilitarisation of the South African prison system. He said that those who had served in the department before it had been demilitarised could surely tell how strict and

difficult things had been at the time. “Dedication is needed for correctional officers,” he said. “This kind of dedication was proven with the officials whose lives and work we are remembering today.”

A representative of the fami-lies of the remembered officials, Mrs Doris Mphephu, thanked the department of correctional services for showing them love by inviting them for the unveil-ing of the wall of remembrance. “This is being done in memory of the people whom we loved,” she said and called upon all widows to hold themselves with total respect in this trying world.

sioner, Mr Kenneth Mthomb-eni, indicated that the manage-ment was aware that, due to administrative difficulties, the department might be failing to appropriately and efficiently meet the needs of some of the families of the late officials who had passed on in the line of service.

He invited all affected parties to report to his office, so that these mishaps could be recti-fied. “Our gates are always open for you,” Mthombeni said.

Who speaks on behalf of the Tshivhase Royal Family and who are the real leaders of the family? These questions feature prominently in the current row concerning the ap-pointment of chiefs by Mailau-sumbwa Kennedy Tshivhase.

Last month, the Thohoyandou High Court nullified the appoint-ment of chiefs in the Tshipako area. The court also granted an interdict prohibiting Thovele Tshivhase from appointing chiefs without the knowledge and con-sent of the Nemavhola Royal Council.

In a letter addressed to the Limpopo premier, the rele-vant MEC and the provincial house of traditional leaders, the “Tshivhase Royal Family” lashes out at Thovhele Tshivhase and accuses him of malpractices and abusing his powers. The letter is signed by Leslie Tshivhase and Fhatuwani Tshivhase as the respective interim chairperson and interim secretary of the Tshivhase royal family.

This week the Tshivhase roy-al family, through its spokes-person, Thovhele Luvhaivhai Tshivhase, came out spitting fire. He said Leslie was not a member of the family. In a document titled “Who is Leslie Nyad-zani Tshivhase?” Luvhaivhai Tshivhase says the family is disturbed by the utterances by Leslie, an “unknown person to the family and his group”.

According to Luvhaivhai Tshivhase, the family is dis-

mayed by the utterances of Leslie and is of the opinion that he does not represent the views of the family as he is not a family mem-ber. He said Leslie Tshivhase and his group had been served with letters on 25 March 2013, re-questing him to furnish the royal family with certified copies of documents identifying himself, his mother and his father. He was given seven days to respond, which he apparently did not do.

“Maybe he wanted to say he is the chairperson of his fam-ily, but not the Tshivhase royal family. He should tell the nation which of the royal family mem-bers appointed him and where. It has come to our attention that Leslie is collecting names and signatures from the street from especially those who are illiter-ate,” said Luvhaivhai Tshivhase. He said Vho-Makhadzi Vho-Londolani Muofhe Mufhandu, one of the senior Tshivhase royal council members, discovered that her name had been signed fraudulently and she had made an affidavit to withdraw her signature.

He also responded to the al-legation made that the Limpopo premier had given R10 000 to Mailausumbwa Kennedy Tshivhase. “The R10 000 re-ferred to was promised to a malende traditional dance group who performed for the first lady of Limpopo when the premier paid Mailausumbwa Kennedy Tshivhase a visit,” he explained.

pealed to the community and traditional leaders within the Tshivhase dynasty not to as-sociate themselves with the unknown Leslie Tshivhase who is claiming to be chairperson of the Tshivhase royal family. “The Tshivhase royal council and Tshivhase royal family are distancing themselves from any actions and statements made by the so-called Leslie Tshivhase, as he does not represent the Tshivhase family,” he said.

As far as the Nemavhola case is concerned, Luvhaivhai denied having received any documents and stated that they knew noth-ing about the order. “We are still content with the installation of chiefs and we know we have not breached any government rule,” said Luvhaivhai.

Leslie Tshivhase, on the other hand, is adamant that he is of royal blood and that he was born into the family.

“My mother was married to Rasimphi Tshivhase,” he said and explained that there were two boys and two girls.

“Luvhaivhai is the one who does not belong to the Tshivhase family. He is a Mphephu, who has just changed his surname. I do not want to delve deeper into that, but what I am worried about is who is he to question my relationship with the family? Please do your investigations and you will find that these people are just confusing people when they know the truth,” added Leslie Tshivhase.

Vhembe District Executive Mayor Cllr Tshiter-eke Matibe has urged the community to share information with everyone in order to help reduce the infection rate of HIV.

In his address during the TB and Aids Awareness Campaign held at Makuya Multi-Purpose Centre last Thursday, Matibe said health institutions within Vhembe should not discriminate against fellow Africans who came here for economical reasons.

Matibe said the government was committed to the integration of the economy of the SADC and its people in all aspects of life. “All of us are obliged to embrace each other and share the few resources

share our health programmes and information related to communicable diseases such as STI and HIV/Aids with our brothers and sisters from our neighboring countries,” said Matibe.

Since 2009, much as been achieved in terms of preventing new infections, treatment and support for those who were already affected by HIV/Aids, said Matibe.

He added that a significant decline had been recorded in terms of new infections. In responding to the efforts and policy direction by the national and provincial governments, Vhembe District developed an achievable operational plan that was adopted by the council last November. The operational plan is aligned to the national and provincial strategies.

Matibe also congratulated Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi on launching rolling out a programme of taking a single pill per day for HIV/Aids patients.

Matibe said a phe-nomenon which was emerging in the commu-nities was that older men who were wealthier and financial sound were having sexual affairs with younger women. “This disturbing phe-nomenon is posing a very serious threat for both the sugar daddies and the younger women. The statistics of older men who are being in-fected with HIV/Aids are growing on a daily basis.

The environmental coalition, consisting of the Endangered Wildlife Trust, the Wilderness Foundation South Africa, the World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa, the Association of Southern African Profes-sional Archaeologists, the Ma-pungubwe Action Group and BirdLife South Africa, is better known as the Coalition.

The Coalition had an informal strategy meeting with their law-yers from the University of the Witwatersrand’s Centre for Ap-plied Legal Studies (CALS) on Saturday 27 April. Represented at the meeting were various local communities who are de-scendants of the first inhabitants of Mapungubwe. Also at the meeting were surrounding farm-ers and lodge owners, as well as representatives of numer-ous environmental awareness groups that are also part of the Coalition.

The meeting acted as a po-

dium for the concerned parties to voice their feelings regarding CoAL. Particularly the com-munities felt that their concerns were being ignored, not so much by the mine, but rather by the government.

“What has happened to our previous complaints and ap-peals? I’m certain of it that it has been filed in File 13 and has now been long forgotten,” re-marked one community leader. Due to the fact that not all the documents and remarks made during this meeting are public knowledge yet, the attendees asked for anonymity.

The Vele colliery is CoAL’s first operational open-cast mine in the Soutpansberg coal basin and is about 7km from the Ma-pungubwe World Heritage Site. Since plans became known more than three years ago about the proposed mine, the Coalition has been involved in a legal battle with CoAL.

This saw CoAL paying fines of about R9 million to the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) for an infringement of water licences. At that stage, however, the mine was already 95% complete, and in 2011 the

mine was finished and 55 000 tonnes were hauled from its first box cut.

Afterwards, the Coalition and CoAL entered into a memoran-dum of understanding (MoU) to work together to ensure that CoAL follows, to the letter, the terms of all their licences.

This agreement was cancelled in December last year due to “past and on-going non-com-pliance with water legislation at Vele.”

Despite the water being a burning issue, attendees at the meeting also felt that CoAL, together with the government, only sees the money to be made out of coal and not the environ-ment or any cultural heritage in the area. “There is no monetary value for them in wildlife, trees or culture,” remarked another attendee.

Since the termination of the MoU, CALS has come up with an environmental management committee – a first in South Africa.

This committee represents key roleplayers with an interest in the mine. The EMC will see to it that CoAL stick to their licence terms.

The project to build a new community hall at Waterval was launched earlier this month by the mayor of Makhado, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi (with pick in hand). The hall, which will cost roughly R8 million to build, is expected to be completed by December. Mutavhatsindi said the building of the new hall was part of the municipality’s infrastructure maintenance plan.

Univen principal Prof Peter Mbati has expressed his shock about the death of Dr Nanga Lidovho, who was killed in a motorbike accident. Lidovho was a legal advisor of the principal and member of the university’s management.

He died last Wednesday. This is not the first time that a university staff member was killed in a motorbike accident. In 2011, lecturer Peter Tshif-hango also died in a motorbike-related accident.

Only a month ago, another well-known local businessman, Mr Maano Nemakonde, lost his life when he was involved in a motorbike accident with a taxi.

The accidents have ignited an outcry from the community, with many saying motorbikes should be banned as they are claiming many precious lives in the community.

Mbati eulogised the dead man as one of the great minds of the university. “Dr Lidovho was a cherished and esteemed member of the university management, contributing more than 20 years of professional life to educating generations. I enjoyed working with him immensely and I feel fortunate to have had him as a colleague and friend.”

Lidovho joined the University of Venda as a law lecturer 22 years ago. Heascended the academic ladder over the years and gained promotions. He was appointed as deputy dean and head of depart-ment of adjectival criminal law and clinical legal studies in the School of Law at the University of Venda between 1994 and 1995. During the same period, he was also appointed acting dean in the School of Law.

He was appointed as the Legal Advisor to the vice-chancellor and principal in 1995, a position he occupied until he met his death. Lidovho was in possession of a number of qualifications, which included a PhD from the University of Pretoria and other post-graduate qualifications from local and overseas universities

Junior Sikheli is a fresh breeze

Angry Tshiluma residents march for service

From humble beginnings in the dusty streets of rural Mangondi Ha-Jim Kone outside Tho-hoyandou, little-known new Venda Afropop and Venda traditional music sensation Junior Sikheli is a fresh breeze in Venda music circles.

With the release of his debut album, Ladzani Shango, Sikheli is fast becoming a household name. The 10-track album, recorded at Face-off Records under the watchful eye of ace producer Prince Nyadzawela, was launched recently. It promises to be a bestseller, with hundreds of copies already sold since its release.

The positive reception has given Sikheli hope and he is determined to stay in the industry. At the moment, he is enjoying massive airplay from local radio stations in Limpopo, as well as Soshanguve FM. “For me, music is inborn and runs in the blood. I started singing in Sub A and later sang with my brother and I never run out of new ideas. I see vi-sions in broad daylight and capture whatever comes to me on my phone. From there, it is polished to become a song like the ones you are hearing.”

Tracks which stand out on the album are Tshi-mima Venda, Lotsha and Ndo Shanduka.

He worked with artists like Jininka and Takizit, with Mpho Madzhiga engineering the whole project.

Residents of Tshiluma (Tshiavha, Lukau and Marude) in Ward 22 of Thulamela say they have had enough of waiting for service from the Thulamela municipality.

The residents, who said they had been in constant engagement with the municipality since 2003, said they had no water, no electricity and their roads were impassable. Hundreds of the residents marched to the municipality’s offices, where they handed over a memorandum of their grievances.

From the Thulamela Local Municipality they moved over to the nearby offices of the Vhembe District Municipality, which is the water author-ity in the area, where they handed over another memorandum.

The marchers, who were waving placards with their demands and singing freedom songs, were also bearing primus stoves, paraffin lamps and candles to show their plight. “We have been crying for water, roads and electricity for too long and all along the municipality keeps on promising. We bought tanks from our own pockets with the hope that the municipality would send water tankers to fill them, but days go by without water in this area and people have to risk their lives in the darkness to the only tap in the village,” said Jeffreys Masakona, the deputy-convenor of the march.

He said it was sad to see that water pipes from

the reservoir at Marude passed via their village to other neighbouring villages while they were without water. “We are worried that we see water in some of the hostels in the village, but we are without water,” he added.

He said another burning issue was electricity in the area, with some applications having been launched in 2003, but nothing has come from the applications. “Only the rich have their houses elec-trified while the poor stay in darkness. The crime rate has risen in the area because of darkness and the standard of life is never improving. We need electricity in this area like all other people in the municipality,” added Masakona.

He said even the roads in the area were not up to scratch, with only paths that cannot be used by cars in the village. “We have been trying to get help from the municipality since 2004, but there is no help coming from the municipality,” he said.

The marchers gave the municipality up until the end of May 2013 to put their house in order or face further mass action.

BlackJahman grows from strength to strengthBlackJahman had eventually released his much-awaited album a fortnight ago. Ac-cording to thousands of his fans, it was long overdue, as he had initially promised to re-lease his new musical project towards the end of last year.

“I couldn’t come forth with a new offer at that time, because of logistic stumbling blocks. I have always felt that I had to wait for an opportune time so as to give Jah people good music,” explains BlackJahman as an apology to his fans.

The 11-song reggae offering is titled What a Day, and he invites all people to jump up in jubilee and celebrate the gift of life, freedom and peace. “What a day – jump and celebrate in harmony!” he sings.

On the first track, he advises all people who are in serious relationships to stop promising each other “heaven and earth” or “the stars and the moon.” The artist’s opinion is that many re-lationships end up on the rocks, because of promises which are hard to fulfill. “So many divorce

after the wedding – what is wrong with you, people?” he asks in the song.

He sings about trust, respect and commitment as virtues which should serve as founda-tion for every lasting relation-ship. Five songs are sung in English, two in Sesotho, two in Tshivenda and the other two in Xitsonga. Songs such as Naledi ya bophelo, Buwa and Tlan-gelani Africa are well arranged in terms of sound and lyrics quality. However, the song Lufuno fhedzi, which is a redo

of All we need (is love, peace) from the previous album Mes-siah’s Mercy, is a bit of a letdown if you have listened to the original English version.

BlackJahman believes that as a nation which seeks to see the prevailing of peace, the modern style of living, government policies and con-stitution need to be revisited by doing what is right and for all people to refrain from wrongdoings. “We need to forget about racial and gen-der issues and start focusing on building our nation,” he speaks affectionately.

This musician was born Witness Ntshangase in the dry mountains of Dlomodlomo in KwaZulu Natal and grew up in Mkhuhlu Tsema-marhumbu village in Mbombela, Mpuma-langa.

Somewhere inside the sleeve of the album is written the warning: “Piracy is an of-fence and is also a sin”.

Two CD’s to celebrate ten years of successThere was excitement bordering on hysteria at Worship Christian House in Shayandima outside Thohoyandou at the weekend’s live re-cording of the musical group Worship House’s two CDs.

The recording celebrates the church and the group’s ten-year anniversary.

On Saturday, they recorded Celebration Ten, a 17-track praise CD, while on Sunday they recorded an 11-track CD, True Worship 2013.

The Saturday’s recordings, which drew fans from as far as Tanzania and Zimbabwe, saw the group record traditional songs. They included the deep Zimbabwe traditional beat, Chimurenga (which was popular during the liberation struggle), the Sepedi beat, the Tshivenda beat and the Shangaan beat.

During the recordings, fans were on their feet and danced the night away.

The church spokesperson Pastor Shemya Makota expressed joy at the way things went. “It was an overwhelming experience. We were honouring God, but instead He honoured us,” said the upbeat Makota.

Makota said the church had every reason to cel-ebrate. “We are just ten years old, but God blessed us, including in material terms,” said Makota.

The church is housed in a state-of-the-art build-ing. Worship House is one of the most respected groups in Southern Africa and has won many awards.

Subsequent to the recordings, the church held a conference which ran from 1 to 4 May, featuring in-ternational speakers like Dr Don Graham from the United States and Dr John Moyo from Australia.

The residents of Tshiozwi vil-lage, which falls under the Makhado Municipality, are at loggerheads with the mu-nicipality over an uncompleted electrifi cation project.

Tshiozwi should have received electricity in 2009, but this never happened. During a visit of Mir-ror to the area two weeks ago, it was found that some of the houses have no meter boxes and no wiring cables, but poles have been planted. The people regard themselves as forgotten and feel that the promises made to them have not been honoured.

Ms Thizwilondi Davhana, who is unemployed, blames the problem on the municipality. She says they don’t care about the people. “The planted poles are just a decoration in the village (to fool) the passer-by.” According Davhana, the promises started four years ago. “They promised to fi nish the job a long time ago. We are still waiting. We are not even sure whether they will honour their promises this time,” she said.

“We are tired of using candles and primus stoves and we do not want solar systems, but electric-ity. We do not want to chop down trees anymore,” said Davhana. She accused the municipality of wasting taxpayers’ money. “Where is the money allocated for the project?” she asked.

The chairperson of Sanco, Mr Shaft Matumba, confi rmed that the people of Tshiozwi are upset about the delay in completing

the job. “We, the ordinary people, want

to know why there is a delay in electrifying our village, whereas others have electric lights,” said Matumba. “Where is the money which was budgeted for the proj-ect?” he asked. “Even the ward councillor, David Davhana, did

not report back to the community about what is happening with the project”, he said.

The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Louis Bobodi, said that money to com-plete the project was budgeted for in the next fi nancial year, which will start in July.

Poverty-stricken pupils at Nt-sumbedzeni Primary School in the rural Makhuvha vil-lage outside Thohoyandou received a major boost just before the onset of winter.

Businesspeople in the area pooled their resources and bought 60 pairs of shoes for disadvantaged pupils. The shoes were handed to the pupils during an event which was attended by the local traditional leader, Chief Ntanganedzeni Makhu-vha, Mr Kgorompe Rallele, the deputy manager school governance in the Luvhuvhu Circuit, sponsors, principals

from neighbouring schools and the parents of the pupils.

The shoes were donated by Dembe Drilling CC, Tshilivho Driving School, Tshilivho Cash Crop, Ratshidzhome Building Project, Blue Valley Lodge, Makhethani Driving School and Tshigome.

The overjoyed principal of the school, Ms Martha Nemu-kongwe, said the school had well over 200 pupils who were mostly from disadvantaged backgrounds. “It is really a blessing for our pupils. Most of the pupils’ parents are not working, which makes it very

difficult for them to afford uniforms.”

Representing the sponsors, Mr Rudzani Rambuwani said it was out of compassion and love for the pupils that they felt they should be involved. “As local businesspeople, we should be involved in all community initiatives. We should make our presence felt in the community, more especially on issues of education, which is the only remedy that could cure poverty in this community.”

He also pledged to drill a borehole at the school before the end of the year.

Vuwani, Kurhuleni need better services

Man’s private parts nearly severed during assault

The concerned residents arrived in trucks, taxis and on foot.

The residents of Masia, Kurhuleni and Vhan-gani villages in the Vuwani area marched to the Vuwani regional office of the Makhado Municipality two weeks ago to demand that the road between Kurhuleni and Majosi (D3757) be tarred.

According to a community leader, Norman Muk-homi, the memorandum handed over refers to the formal request which was addressed to the office of the Vhembe District Municipality’s executive mayor, dated 7 October 2009. In this letter, the residents asked that the road be tarred as a matter of urgency.

The three villages linked by the road had decided to take the matter further by engaging the office of the MEC for Roads and Transport in Polokwane. “The road became impassable due to the damage caused by the rains in February this year,” said Mukhomi. He indicated that they had asked for the assistance from the local municipality, but nothing was done. “Instead, a local white farmer helped to repair the road at his own expense.”

It is stated in the memorandum that there is a road which was “constructed in the bush” without any proper consultation with the three communities. “We would have happily given inputs as to where

the road should have been constructed,” Mukhomi read from the memo.

Road D3757 has apparently been mentioned in the integrated development plan (IDP) of the Makhado Municipality, indicating that it would be tarred during the said periods, but nothing has been done.

The residents are also not sure who is responsible for maintaining the road, the Makhado Municipal-ity or the Vhembe District Municipality.

The leadership representing the communities adds in the memo that, if they have not received a response in 21 days, they shall intensify the protest action and solicit the assistance of other stakehold-ers, such as civil organisations, to highlight their plight.

Mukhomi said that other parties who were ad-versely affected by the bad road were the Vuwani Taxi Association and the Phadziri & Brothers bus company, who transported commuters along this road on a daily basis.

When contacted for comment, Vhembe District Municipality’s spokesperson Matodzi Ralushai said that the district municipality mainly focused on ad-dressing issues of water challenges. “At least 80% of our financial budget goes towards water proj-

ects in the whole d i s t r i c t , ” s a id Ralushai. “On 27 February this year, we had a meeting with community leaders from dif-ferent villages in the Masia area, at the Masia Tra-ditional Council. This was where we addressed the case of the said road, when some members of the community raised it.”

A 29-year-old man from Nkay-eni village outside Beit Bridge is fighting for his life, after two men who accused him of impregnating their sister, stabbed him in the head with a knife, before trying to slice off his private parts.

It is reported that the man was on his way to a local school to attend some competitions being held at the school. On the way

he met the two men, who alleg-edly blocked his way and started throwing insults at him.

The suspects, aged 19 and 22, then allegedly accused him of impregnating their sister. Before he could explain or tell his side of the story, the two men allegedly started assaulting him with their fists. He was then stabbed and the two men grabbed his private parts and tried to slice them off.

Police spokesperson Insp Bil-lie Dube said they were investi-gating the case. “The victim was saved by his cousin, who found the two suspects busy attempting to cut off his private parts. The victim’s cousin wrestled with the suspects and they managed to escape,” said Dube.

The two suspects are still at large, while Ndebele was admit-ted to a local hospital.

A well-known police officer, Zwodangani Peter Maka-nanisa (45), was admitted as an attorney in the High Court of South Africa upon passing his admission examination from the Law Society of South Africa on 25 April 2013.

“It was difficult trying to tackle social life, family, work and studying all at the same time,” said the man who had proved that education has no boundaries. “I had to give my wife and children enough time while at the same time I had to study hard.” He said that work-ing in the investigation unit of the SAPS was a strenuous job, which also needed concentrated focus and dedication. “When one of my kids was not feeling well, it affected my studies, but I had to pull my socks up as a man who had a goal to achieve,” he explained.

Makananisa had attended Madabude Primary School at Ha-Mpofu before he moved on to Denga Secondary in Ntha-balala village. He passed his Standard10 in 1986. “I didn’t pass well and I felt I should repeat my Standard10, which I did immediately and passed well at Tshiawelo Secondary School at Vleifontein,” he said.

He then joined the former Venda Police Force on 1 March 1989, working at Tshilwavhusi-ku police station. By 1999, he was transferred to the Makhado stock-theft unit. “All along, the fire of learning and studying further had been burning within me,” he said. “So I started by registering for a Deeds Reg-istration Diploma with Unisa, which I passed. That experience motivated me to register for an LLB degree.”

He then did his ar-ticles at the Thohoyandou State Attorney’s offices. “During August of 2012, as I was busy still doing my articles, I passed my attorney admission exami-nation from the Law Society of South Africa,” he said. Maka-nanisa is still working as a police officer and he hopes to move on to practicing law whenever the opportunity avails itself. “For those who think that education is for the youngsters alone, I say not to let anything stand in your w a y a n d you migh t f ind your-selves real-ising your dreams,” he said.

Rospa United must win the match in order to remain on the safe side in terms of relegation. They are now in the ninth posi-tion on the log, but they are still not safe from the relegation axe.

Property to the value of thousands of rands was de-stroyed when a house in the Dulibadzimu suburb of Beit Bridge caught fire in a sus-pected case of arson.

According to witnesses, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday at the Hlalani Kuhle houses in Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town.

“I woke up at around 02:00 after I heard people scream-ing and that was when I saw a

crowd gathered around my neighbour’s room, which was on fire. We then started pouring sand and water onto the fire, but, unfortunately, by the time we managed to put out fire out, the entire room had already been burnt,” said Mr Kudzai Chuma, a wit-ness.

The tenant at the house, Ms Shyleen Chafadza, said that she arrived at around 02:00 from a night club and found her room in flames.

“I suspect this could be an act of arson, be-cause I had not left a candle burning and the house is also not elec-trified. Surprisingly, the rooms belonging to other tenants were not

affected,” she said.The destroyed household prop-

erty includes a bed, wardrobe, clothes, television set, a stove and kitchen utensils. When Limpopo Mirror visited the house, rubble was strewn all over the area.

The owner of the house, Mr Kijana Maphula, said it would cost him R60 000 to repair the damaged property.

The chairperson of the Hlalani Kuhle Residents Association, Mr Kenias Mbedzi, urged the police

to investigate the incident. “I was one of the first people to arrive at the scene and, from the look of things, it could be an act of arson. We therefore urge people to desist from burning other people’s properties in the event of disputes.”

Police spokesperson Chief Supt Lawrence Chinhengo con-firmed the incident, saying no arrests had been made. He said they were still investigating the matter.

The Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) has encouraged cyclists to come and take part in the 24th annual PPC Kremetart Cycling Race during a special media launch held on Monday.

The race will be held from 7 to 9 June, and with less than five weeks to go, cycling fever is mounting in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), who will host more than a thousand cyclists, their families and supporters.

LTA’s chief executive officer, Mr Nocks Seabi, said during the launch that they were excited to be part of such an important tour-ism driver in the province. The LTA head office in the province, the Makhado Info Centre on the corner of Songozwi Street and

the N1, will once again be the starting and finishing point for the cycling race.

Also speaking at the media launch was the race organiser from the P&L Cycling Club, Ms Renda Alexander. She confirmed that cycling entries for the 175km four-stage race will be limited to 1 500 entries. Entries that they have received since entries opened in February had already passed the 600 mark on Monday.

For cyclists, the PPC Krem-etart Race will afford the op-portunity to participate in South Africa’s only one-day stage race, with some of the country’s top cyclists and teams participating. Alexander also said that the club had already received bookings

from cyclists as far as Namibia and Belgium. The tandem cat-egory, she said, had also elicited a record number of entries.

This year, the race organisers have also arranged more than one spectator bus to accommodate supporters of the race. There will also be lots of entertainment for family and friends of cyclists in the family fun village. For the less adventurous, there is a 70km road race, a kid’s race and a 10km fun race. For mountain bikers, there will be a cross-country race on the Sunday, which will also be a qualifying race for Limpopo colours.

Phathutshedzo “Mandoza” Takalani was a marvel to watch when his side, Mukula Young Santos, beat Makwarela Devel-opment Stars 2-1 in their SAB League match at the Makware-la Stadium on Saturday.

Takalani scored a brace in the match to ensure that Santos remain in contention for the league title.

The visitors from Mukula did not panic, despite squander-ing numerous scoring chances in the opening minutes. In the first instance it was their roving midfielder, Rendani Vusani, who caused an upset.

He suffered the pain of watch-ing his long-range volley going off target by inches in the ninth minute.

Phathutshedzo Nethengwe commited a similar blunder a little later.

The referee, Mr Kenneth Ma-kondo, flashed his first yellow card in the 19th minute. Andani Munyai of Development Stars was booked for a late tackle on Jacob Ramudzuli.

No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous at-

tempts by the Santos goal poachers.

The last half saw Santos invade the op-ponents’ territory time after time.

Takalani opened their account in the 50th minute. He unleashed a powerful shot from inside the box after a heartbreaking scram-ble. Santos introduced Nkhuliseni Ndlovu for Sharlen Munyamela, whose performance was deteriorating with time, in the 65th minute.

Jacob Ramudzul i of Santos was brought down within the box and it was a clear pen-alty; Takalani made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Development Stars replaced their injured defender, Hulisani Mu-rei, with Thumo Mur-ovhi late in the game. Tshi l i lo Mufamadi scored the Stars’ solitary goal in the 84th minute.

FC Basel beat Phungo All Stars 1-0 in a thrilling Safa Limpopo second-division game that was played at the Eltivillas grounds on Saturday.

Basel deserved the vic-tory, as they were dictating terms in all departments. The players who continu-ously gave the Stars defence a tough time were Velile Mdaka and Louis Chauke.

Tshifhiwa Mmbooi, a de-fender of Basel, was booked for an illegal tackle on Ivan Mahangwahaya. The Stars’ keeper, Timothia Bapela, denied the opponents sev-eral sure goals through his acrobatic goalkeeping.

Stars were the first to effect a change to their original squad.

They introduced Ndivhu-wo Masakona for Mahlatsi Moloto early in the second half. Basel responded by replacing Lucky Mkhari with Khanukani Mawela in the 64th minute.

The introduct ion of Mawela changed the flow of the match initially, as he dished dangerous passes to the front runners. The only goal of the day was scored by Velile Mdaka. He tried his luck from the 35m area. The Stars keeper misjudged the flight of the ball and it hit the back of the net.

Dynamos to face Black Aces in NFD clash

United Artists too clever for FET students

Mpumalanga Black Aces will have nobody else to blame but themselves if they fail to collect maximum points in their NFD league match against Dyna-mos at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Aces are one of the close contenders for the league championship, while Dynamos have nothing to lose in the match as they have already been relegated. Their 1-2 defeat at the hands of Sivutsa Stars at the Kabokweni Stadium in Nelspruit has confirmed the pride of Giyani’s relegation

to the Safa second division.Jomo Cosmos have reason to believe

that they will easily beat FC AK at the Makhulong Stadium. FC AK are fighting for survival at the third-last position on the log, while Jomo Cosmos have nothing to worry about as they are comfortable in the middle of the log.

Witbank Spurs will enjoy the home-ground advantage in their match against African Warriors. The pace setters, Thanda Royal Zulu, will play their match against Sivutsa Stars at the Richards

Bay Stadium. Polokwane City will host Blackburn Rovers at the University of Limpopo Stadium. Vasco da Gama will host FC Cape Town and Milano United and Santos will battle it out for points in Cape Town. In the final match of the week-end, United FC will meet Roses United at the Moru-leng Stadium.

United Artists continued to pave their way to the promotional play-offs by beating the Vhembe FET College FC 3-0 in their SAB League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday.

Both sides approached the game aggressively, with their midfielders demonstrating their rough skills. The referee, Mr Christopher Mugeri, calmed the situation down by flashing two yellow cards within the first 10 minutes of the game. Mpho Madzhara of Vhembe and Ronewa Gidi of Artists were reprimanded with cards for dangerous tackles.

The absence of Rudolph Sithole in the starting lineup for Vhembe was evident from the onset, as there was no one to distribute much-needed killer passes to the front runners.

United Artists took the lead in the 19th minute. Maanda “Bartlett” Mulaudzi was on target, following a square pass by Robert Baloyi. The students regrouped from behind soon afterwards, but it was difficult for them to find their way through the defence of Artists.

Artists increased the tally in the 36th minute. Mulalo Nkhumeleni’s shot hit the back of the net after the keeper of Vhembe, Rhulani Sambo, mishandled the ball. Vhembe realised that it was not their day when they missed a fortune in the 60th minute. Their fast for-ward, Stanley Matodzi, was brought down by Mulalo Nkhumeleni within the box. Nkhumeleni was warned with a card before the referee awarded a penalty to Vhembe. Stanley Tshidade tried his luck, but the ball hit the cross bar and bounced back into the playing field.

United Artists put the matter beyond doubt when Jeffrey Mungoni scored with a ground cutter nine minutes before the end of the game.

The current log leaders of Stream E of the Safa Vhembe SAB league, Madombidzha Western Stars, were too strong for Zoutpansberg Pow-erline when they beat them 2-0 at Madabani on Sunday.

Powerline attacked from the start, but wasted numerous chances. Their captain, Jayson Maisha, missed a sit-ter in the fourth minute, after receiv-ing a beautiful pass from Vhutshilo Mafunisa.

The home team’s defender, Vhut-shilo “Muraleni” Mafunisa, was yellow-carded for pushing Percy Mononoka in the 36th minute.

Thabo Matuba beat several de-fenders and scored easily in the 57th minute. Lufuno Ndou of Stars was cautioned with a card for a bad tackle on Takalani Netshisaulu in the 79th minute. Lucky Masutha scored the second goal for his team late in the match.

Muduluni Young Chiefs were crowned as the new champions of Limpopo Dairy Mageu KO. The competition was played under the auspices of the Makhado Lo-cal Football Association (MLFA).

The final match was played at the Ravele grounds last Wednesday. Young Chiefs beat Madombidzha Try Again 2-1.

During the presentation of the prizes, Mr Tobias Fourie of Limpopo Dairy said he decided to finance the competition be-

cause he realised the need for companies to assist sport at grassroots level. He said he was confident that other businesspeople would follow in his footsteps.

According to him, the sponsorship is a token of appreciation for the support of his business from the community. Fourie further stated that it was the policy of his company to give some of their profit back to the community and to the youth to en-able them to be involved in sport.

The chairperson of Makha-do Local Football, Mr Joseph Maphaha, thanked the manage-

ment of Limpopo Dairy, saying that few businesspeople realised the importance of developing the community through sponsorships.

He praised Limpopo Dairy for their decision to sponsor football. He stated that he was convinced that the MLFA would produce stars who would receive international recognition soon.

A total amount of R10 000 was shared among the teams. Mudulunbi Young Chiefs took home R2 000 and a floating trophy. Madombidzha Try Again, the runners-up, received R1 400.

Hopeless Dynamos donate more points

Takers and Univen FC share the glory

Dynamos have every reason to panic. Although they still have four matches to play before the activities for their league programme come to an end, Dynamos have already been relegated to the lower division.

Last week they lost two important matches. They gave away league points to Santos, when they lost 2-3 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium last Wednesday and suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Sivutsa Stars at the Kabokweni Stadium last Saturday.

Their defeat against Sivutsa Stars was a confir-mation that they will be campaigning under the banner of the Safa second division next season.

In the other NFD matches that were also played over the past weekend, the second-placed Thanda Royal Zulu lost 1-2 to United FC. African War-riors shared the spoils 2-all with Polokwane City, while Blackburn Rovers were beaten 0-1 by Roses United.

Santos beat Witbank Spurs 2-0 and FC Cape Town were too good for Jomo Cosmos.

They beat them 1-0. Mpumalanga Black Aces strengthened their leadership on the log by beat-ing Vasco da Gama 1-0 and FC AK lost 1-2 to Milano United.

The leaders in Stream D of the SAB League, Maweja Takers, were held to a goalless draw by title contenders, Univen, at the Tshakhuma Mulangaphuma grounds on Sunday.

The game was played under protest. The students lodged a protest with the referee and the lodging of the protest caused the game to start 30 minutes late. In their protest letter, Univen alleged that five players of Takers, Mashudu Makhari, Zwivhuya Tshisaphungo, Hulisani Sibara, Rambuda Nekhud-zhiga and Khuliso Netshulu, were not properly

registered.The referee, Mr Mashudu Sathuma, warned Clif-

ford Radzilani of Univen with a card for obstructing Khumbudzo Muvhango just outside the penalty box. The keeper of Univen, Eugene Mbedzi, made his presence felt when he braved Mukandangalwo Ramunana’s half volley. Khumbudzo Muvhango of Takers was also booked for a late tackle on Takalani Ramagalela three minutes before the end of the first half. Maweja Takers were the first to effect a change to their starting lineup. They introduced Tshipuliso Singo for Hulisani Sibara. Khumbudzo Muvhango of Takers came close to scoring in the 69th minute. He forced his way through the defence of Univen and lost possession before just before he could unleash.

The head coach of Black Leopards, Mr Sunday Chid-zambwa, has at last openly agreed that only a miracle will save his side from relegation. This came after Black Leopards lost 2-5 to Mamelodi Sundowns in their Absa Premiership encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Tuesday evening.

It took the visitors from Pretoria only four minutes to break the deadlock. Their captain, Teko Modise, penetrated the defence of Leopards and beat their keeper, Postnet Omony, with a ground cutter. The Brazilians increased the margin four minutes later. Their Mozam-bican international, Elias Pelembe, unleashed from the 25-meter area.

Omony denied Sundowns a third goal in the 18th minute, when he palmed Nyasha Mshekwi’s header away for a corner kick.

Sundowns were awarded a free kick in the 35-me-ter area after Vincent Mabusela obstructed Teko Modise in the 27th minute. The former Leopards midfi elder, Hlompho Kekana, scored the third for Sundowns from the set piece. Leopards reduced the defi cit by one, seven minutes before the break. Their captain, Mongezi Bobe, headed home after a free kick that was taken by Tiyani Mabunda.

Leopards replaced Edgar Manaka with Mahlatse Maake shortly after the break, but Nyasha Mshekwi found the net fi ve minutes into the second half.

Realizing that their defence was leaking, Leopards introduced Harry Nyirenda for Victor Kamuka soon after Sundowns’ fourth goal. The home side pulled one back through Tiyani Mabunda, whose long-range vol-

ley looked too hot for the Brazilians’ keeper to handle.Leopards replaced Abbas Amidu with Mxolisi Gumede, but

that did not stop Sundowns from scoring their fi fth goal through Elias Pelembe in the 70th minute.

Sundowns were awarded a free kick in the 35-me-ter area after Vincent Mabusela obstructed Teko Modise in the 27th minute.
