“I am killing myself”

There was a moment of total shock and surprise in Makhado town when a half-naked man climbed into a tall tree in the central business district and started hanging himself on Saturday afternoon.

“I am killing myself,” he wailed from the top of the tree. “They can’t just beat me for nothing.”

A bus that was turning into Burger Street from Songozwi Street came to a halt in the middle of the road. Passengers shouted and swore at him through the windows. “What are you doing, you fool!” shouted a voice dis-tinctly. “If you hate yourself this much, why don’t you go hang yourself in the bushes?”

The 32-year-old Rabelani Mutandari of Muswodi village had certainly caught the attention of many of the locals, but the sad reality of what is happening in the community is more of a shock. Luckily a group of passersby realised the extent of the problem and rushed to help untie the man. “They assaulted me,” he wept. “They are making my life hell!”

Once he was untied and brought down from the top of the tree, he disappeared from the spot, leaving people with a lot of questions.

At first it was difficult to find out what had really happened, but a woman later explained that Mutandari, who is a popular face in the streets of the town and at a local betting slot, was walking past the Tasty Snacks tavern when a boy snatched a R20 banknote from his hand. His only mistake, it seemed, was when he demanded to be given his money back.

“A group of young, drunk boys joined their friend by slapping and kicking him (Mutandari),” she said. “It was a painful sight to witness. He decided that enough was enough and announced that it would have been better if he were dead.”

According to townspeople, Mutandari took off his maroon t-shirt and tore it into strips. He walked across the road, straight to a tall tree. He climbed into the tree and started to tie a rope to a big branch. “Then he made a noose and put it around his neck,” said a witness. “He was serious – and he looked very traumatised.”

A man who declined to be named said that the suspects who had assaulted Mutandari were the kind of boys who normally spent much more of their time in jail than outside.

“We know that once they get released from prison, terror reigns in the town,” he said. “They will soon go back to their real home – jail, for that’s where they belong.”

Some people described Mutan-dari as a good man who had some luck at the betting slots.

Limpopo Mirror managed to track down Mutandari on Tues-

day morning. He made a lonely figure, sitting with his back against the big wall of the parking area near Checkers.

“It’s painful how those boys treated me,” he said, sounding distant. “I covered my face with my arms, but the boys continued hitting me on the arms, so it felt like somebody had thrown a bucketful of hot water at me. I don’t understand why they had to abuse me in such a dirty manner.”

Mutandari survives by doing odd jobs and betting at the slots. “I do not steal,” he said. “But why do I have to suffer this much? I no longer go to the CBD – I am afraid they will attack me again. As you see me now, I am hungry as I cannot go to do piece jobs in the CBD.”

The spokesperson for the Makhado police, Const Irene Radzilane, condemned the act of robbery and assault. “The victim in this incident has got a right to lay charges against his attackers,” she said.

“The problem with some of the victims is that they do not report incidents of abuse to the police. We cannot tolerate the situation where criminals get to rule the town.”

The Umkhonto we Sizwe Mil-itary Veterans Association in the Vhembe region is calling upon the ANC to either fire the political management team (PMT) of the district, or to deploy them elsewhere.

This follows accusations that the members of the PMT are not delivering adequate services to the communities and its em-ployees.

The PMT comprises the ex-ecutive mayor, Cllr Tshitere-ke Matibe, Speaker Mavuyisa Fungheni and the Chief Whip, Cllr Tshifhiwa Dali. The trio are regarded as the driving force of the municipality, but the associa-tion is accusing them of ignoring communities and employees in terms of service delivery.

The chairperson of the asso-ciation in the region, Mr Speedo Dau, said on Monday that the situation the Vhembe district was a worrying factor after it was discovered that the PMT-mem-bers were among the councillors who did not report for duty in Thohoyandou for the past weeks.

They were barred from enter-ing their place of work, follow-ing the non-payment of January salaries to a large number of es-sential services and the payment of third parties, which included medical schemes, which was

reported to be due to some of the workers.

“We asked the meeting with the ANC regional executive council (REC) on Monday, but they didn’t allow us the oppor-tunity to discuss it with them. The PMT’s absence from duty will cause service delivery to the communities to be negatively affected,” said Dau.

Vhembe district municipal-ity’s workers downed tools on Monday a fortnight ago and barred the PMT and councillors from entering their place of work.

A group of municipal workers, who are also members of the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu), convened outside the municipal chambers in Thohoy-andou and resolved that the may-or, acting municipal manager and some councillors would not set foot in the municipal head-quarters until their outstanding salaries whad been paid.

High-level insiders indicated that the municipality was not in a position to pay all its work-ers, with one commenting that “Vhembe is basically broke. It is so broke that it even exhaust-ed its overdraft facility.” The troubled municipality is still subject to an investigation into maladministration and corrup-

tion ordered by Pres Jacob Zuma last year.

“We are still standing on our motion, that the executive mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip should go until such time that we get a new administration. We don’t have confidence in the present group. We want the ANC in the region to speed up the process of removing them urgently, because their stay will delay service delivery,” said Mr Timmy Tshililo of Samwu in the Vhembe region.

During the district’s special meeting held in Thohoyandou on Saturday, Matibe denied during a media during that the Vhembe district was in financial chaos. “Vhembe district has a budget of more than R1billion, of which 86% is grant funded by the na-tional government and 14% from own funding. After a number of meetings with both the Depart-ment of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the National Treasury, an amount of R167 million from the Mu-nicipal Infrastructure Grant was transferred to the municipality on 29 January and a further R96 million is anticipated to be transferred to the account of the district this week,” said Matibe.

Militant youth reign in MalamuleleThe situation in Malamulele worsened after the Demar-cation Board announced on Friday that Malamulele does not deserve to have its own municipality.

This angered the community a great deal. After the announce-ment, angry youths started to burn ANC T-shirts and accused at least two top ANC figures of being behind the decision to deny the area municipal status. They alleged that people in the high echelons of the ruling party had used their influence to deny them municipal status.

On Saturday, the situation turned violent and youths started to stone cars and tyres were burnt in the township. The Malamu-lele High School was set alight during the weekend.

Many residents of the area, and especially the youth, open-ly expressed their anger and, according to many observers, the decision has politicized the community so much that it will take a lot of doing from the government to bring normality to a community that is usually very peaceful.

After the board’s decision, a meeting was held at the Mala-mulele Boxing Gym, where the way forward was discussed. The spokesperson of the Malamulele Municipal Demarcation Task Team, Dr Isaiah Ndhambi, said that despite the “bitter” result, the task team members felt they should not give up the fight. He mentioned that two options exist for the community. They can explore the court option or utilize the new process of the re-demar-cation of boundaries which is now open, and they could find themselves with a municipality.

A suggestion from the older people was that the ongoing shutdown should be suspend-ed and people should take a breather.

The elderly added that people should also explore other ways rather than a self-destructive shutdown that hurts members

of the community more than the government.

The youth, however, would have none of it. “We want the task team to step aside. They were elected to get a munici-pality and they did not get it. Now it is time of the youth to take over and fight. It is we, the young people, who have no jobs because Thulamela Municipality and Vhembe District Municipal-ity do not employ people from Malamulele,” said a young man amid applause.

Later, Mr Steve Mahlale, chief commander of the shutdown management team, and local Sanco chairman Mr Phanuel Baloyi appealed to the youth to show respect to the leadership.

A pastor, Dr Joseph Malu-leke, who is the chairman of the Malamulele Pastor Fraternity, said they were advising the community not to take a sudden decision while angry but to allow the situation to come back to stability and thereafter look for new strategies. The youth again disapproved loudly.

Since the shutdown began three weeks ago, local youths deployed by the shutdown man-agement committee closed all points leading to Giyani and Thohoyandou. This means that no one can go to work in Mala-mulele or in other towns.

Every Friday at 15:00, the curfew is suspended for the weekend and people are allowed to go and buy what they they need. This is necessary because people need supplies, especially for funerals taking place on Saturdays. Only vehicle owners, however, can reach the different towns. Hawkers who live from hand to mouth have long been struggling. Several burial societ-ies' offices have also been closed, while grannies and children have not received their grants since the strike began. Hospitals and clinics, however, are open, but no public transport is available to take people to them. Even hos-pital workers cannot reach their

places of work if they depend on public transport.

A local leader told Limpo-po Mirror that is seemed as if the government was not seri-ous about solving the problem. “Minister Pravin Gordhan came to tell about the Demarcation Act, while he knew we had made an application to the board, and you cannot do so being versed in the Act,” he said.

A meeting of all structures at New Era College on Mon-day night was aborted when youths who had not been invited swamped the venue.

Thulamela Mayor Grace Ma-hosi said on Monday that the people of Malamulele were treated like all the people of Thulamela, but the situation in Malamulele is volatile. Ma-hosi urged the community to start afresh and allow peace to reign. “The government must not watch while Rome is burning,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance in Limpopo has called for immediate calm in the Mala-mulele area. The party's provin-cial leader, Mr Jacques Smalle, said the burning of a school in the area was indeed a dark day for the community and a tragic setback for the learners in the Malamulele area.

He further indicated that the protests could have been avert-ed, had the Premier not made irresponsible promises to a com-munity already frustrated by ANC service delivery failure. "More than 90 schools in the Malamulele area have not yet opened their doors for the 2015 school year, due to the protests. This means that an estimated 40 000 learners have not begun the 2015 academic year in Malam-ulele. The DA calls on Premier Mathabatha to take up the plight of the people of Malamulele and do everything necessary to establish a regional office of Thulamela Municipality in Mal-amulele, and to bring an end to these violent protests," he said.

Landlord in court after death of tenantA Zimbabwean man who rented a room of a house in Tshisahulu met an untimely death when his landlord allegedly stabbed him to death.

The incident, which has created animosity between the local residents and Zimbabweans and also sent shock waves through the village, took place last Wednesday around 17:00.

It is alleged the two were seen drinking together at a local tavern that same afternoon.

There are, however, two confl icting versions of the incident.

One is that the deceased, Timothy Chilebo (25), a Zimbabwean who made a living from piece jobs, who had been drinking with his landlord, went to the landlord’s bedroom and demanded that the landlord switch on the lights to his outside room. It is alleged that the landlord got agitated and accused the deceased of disrespect because he had entered his room without permission.

It is further alleged that the deceased started a fi ght and stabbed the landlord with a broken bottle. It was at that stage that the landlord is said to have run to the kitchen where he fetched a knife, which he used to stab Chilebo. He died in the street outside the house.

The other version is that the fi ght started over an outstanding amount of R50 rent that the tenant allegedly owed the landlord. The landlord apparently went to the tenant’s room and demand-ed the money and dragged the tenant to his room, where an argument ensued. The community is still in shock and in fear as the two were described as the best of friends.

The deceased’s wife, Ms Constance Ngagi (27), said that she could not understand why it had happened. “My husband went to Siawoadza where he was digging a toilet pit and came back at about 13:00. He did not stay at home

for long and went to the tavern where he was drinking with friends. He came back a happy man after having some drinks with friends. I am not aware of any argument.”

She said that she had two children and do not know how to cope now.

Both the leadership of the Zimba-bwean community and the locals at Tshisahulu have called for calmness after the incident. Mr Peter Muneri (34), a Zimbabwean community leader, said the incident was re-grettable. “Firstly, the landlord and his tenant of nearly two years are friends who always went out to drink together. We are still trying to fi nd out what actually happened. So far, we know nothing defi nite about the incident and we are faced with a big challenge of taking him back home for burial. We will have sit down with the leadership at Tshisahulu for a workable solution,” he added.

Local civic chairperson Thomas Rambuwani said that the incident affected everyone and “we have to sit down with our Zimbabwean brothers and see how we can overcome this tragedy,” he said.

Community policing forum chairperson Mr Samuel Masindi said they did not have the facts about the incident but said they were going to hold a meeting and fi nd out what had happened and seek a way forward. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Constable Avhafarei Tshiovhe confi rmed the incident and that they had opened a murder charge. “We have arrested Donald Makhada (57) of Tshisahulu at the scene of the incident and he appeared in court last Friday.

He is in custody and his case has been postponed to 4 Feb-ruary 2014 for further investigations,” said Tshiovhe.

Young mother suddenly dies

Life for two elderly women from Tshikuwi Ramalamula village in Nzhelele have become a nightmare. Instead of relaxing in the comfort and safety of their own homes, these two gran-nies now have to seek refuge at the Mphephu police station. Their houses have been burnt down by angry community members, following witchcraft allegations.

The two neighbours, Mrs Phophi Mulwela (72) and Mrs Mushathama Makushu (84), were chased out of the village on 11 January this year. The police had to move in and rescue the two elderly ladies, as their lives were in serious danger. Outraged community members even took to the streets and barricaded the main road to Wylliespoort with heavy stones and burning tires in an effort to stop the police from rescuing the women.

The unrest in the community apparently fl ared up after a 14-year old girl went missing for a day. When she returned, she alleged that she had been kept by “zombies”. The young girl allegedly told community members that she had been kept in the Madimbo area and had been forced to get married to a member of the village who had died a few years previously. Angry community members then opted to take out their wrath on the two elderly women and burn their houses down. Were it not for the intervention of the police, the two women might have died as a result of the attack.

Mrs Phophi Mulwela was still very traumatized when Limpopo Mirror visited the Mphephu police station this week.

“It is painful to be accused of things you know nothing about,” she said. So far, the two women

The death last week of a young mother of three came as a shock, not only to the local Indian com-munity, but also to many oth-ers who dealt with this kind and always-friendly young woman throughout the years.

The 33-year-old Ruquayah Noor passed away last Wednesday. Ac-cording to family members she had complained about headaches the previous Sunday and was taken to the local private hospital. When the symptoms got worse, it was decided to visit a neurologist in Pretoria for further diagnosis and possible treat-ment. It is very likely that a ruptured brain aneurysm was the cause of death.

Ruquayah was the daughter of Yusuf and Nazma Osman of Louis Trichardt. She grew up in town and went to school at the then Eltivillas Primary School. She completed her matric at the Emmanuel School just outside town.

Not long after finishing matric,

Ruquayah started working at the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror as an advertising representative. She was very popular among her clients and it was quite a loss to the company when she decided to resign and devote all her time and energy to her new role as wife.

She married Anverally Noor, son of the late Abdul Satar Noor. Anver-ally’s uncle is well-known business-man Solly Noor, and following the death of his father, he grew up in this household. Anverally and Ruquayah were blessed with two daughters, Aaliyah (8) and Laaiqah (6), and a son, Zayn (3).

According to Solly, she was a very gentle and compassionate person, always willing to help. Before her death she assisted the Louis Trichardt Primary school with some of their projects. She also managed her own pre-primary centre.

The funeral service was held at the mosque in Eltivillas last Wednesday (28th).

have survived, thanks to the food parcels their relatives deliver daily to the police station. A tent was erected to provide a temporary home for the grannies.

Mrs Mulwela’s three grandchildren, who were staying with her at the time of the incident, are staying with her relatives. “My eldest daughter’s children are staying with my child in another home-stead at the same village,” she said.

Mrs Mulwela alleged that before the actual inci-dent occurred a young boy in the village assaulted her eldest daughter and accused her of bewitching his young brother. Mrs Makushu said she had lost many of her belongings that had been destroyed

when the house was set alight. “We understand and believe that as elders we should not be treated in this manner. Even today I don’t remember people being engaged in such evil deeds,” said.

The police have thus far arrested more than 20 people from the village for arson. The police spokesperson, W/O Lazarus Netshidzati, said the damage to the houses was estimated at around R164 000. He said they were still investigating the incident and the police were also appealing to those who had run away to Gauteng to hand themselves over to the police.

The arrested people will appear in the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court on 25 February.

Storm causes huge damage in Midoroni VillageThe community of Midoroni in the Kutama area was left stranded last Thursday after several houses were damaged by a devastating storm.

A church and many houses had their roofs blown away and the storm uprooted numerous trees. Most of the victims are from this poor rural area, where most of the people are unemployed.

According to Mrs Martha Matidza, whose son’s three-roomed houses was

severely damaged, the wind swept through the village, leaving everyone trying to take cover. Soon big raindrops pelted down. This was followed by loud cracks of thunder and streaks of lightning, which lit the darkened neigh-bourhood.

The situation worsened for her, as deafening sounds started coming from the roof. She indicated that her son’s house’s windows were broken by the

storm. She added that the walls started to shake and the roof rattled and shook vio-lently. The roof sheets were also torn off.

“All the furniture, blankets and grocer-ies were damaged and my son does not have money to replace or repair them,” she added. “I did not sustain any major injuries, but I am extremely shocked,” she added. She also mentioned that they had no place to stay, as the house that they trusted was blown away.

“The wind was very strong and one of the walls even collapsed. We are lucky that we were not injured. The estimated damage is close to R100 000,” she added.

The spokesperson of the Vhembe Municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai told Limpopo Mirror that the situation was very bad, but they had already sent members of the disaster management team to access the damage of the af-fected families. He further encouraged businesspeople, not only around the Makhado Municipal area but in all parts of the Vhembe District, to get involved in assisting those affected.

At the time of going to press, the di-saster management team of the Makhado Municipality was still accessing the damage.

Praise for dedicated employeeRelatives, friends and former col-leagues congratulated Mrs Masindi Johanna Maraga on the time she spent at the Department of Water Affairs.

Her retirement celebratory ceremo-ny was held on Saturday at her home in Makungwi village in Nzhelele.

She started her career at the Tshif-hire plantation in Mabasha but re-signed to start a pottery business, and for some time she made clay pots for a living.

As the business was not generating enough profit , she went to Gauteng for employ-ment. After a few years, she returned to Venda and started working at the agriculture depart-ment in 1980. She was later transferred to the Department of Water Affairs.

She spent most of her time working at Mauluma/Mavhunga and Rabali irrigation scheme until she moved to the Tshifhire Water Purification Plant. She went on pension late last year, after employ-ment of 36 years in the department.

Her colleague, Mrs Netshiunda, who started working with her while they were still young, described her as the most committed person who always focused

on her job. “When we started, we received a monthly salary of R11 and she would take it home and support her children without any complaints,” she said.

Emotional farewell for young Fency KhorommbiWomen were urged to be responsible parents and take care of their children.

“Our government makes provision to take care of poor children by giving them child support grants. We are worried to find out that some mothers are neglecting their children, whereas they are respon-sible for caring for their children,” said the former MEC for safety, security and liaison and now the chairperson of the ANC Women’s League in the Vhembe region, Ms Florence Radzilani.

Radzilani was speaking after the emotional burial of the three-year-old Vhuthuhawe (Fency) Khorommbi, who

was buried at Mulodi cemetery outside Mutale last Thursday. Villagers from Mu-lodi, Thengwe and surrounding villages, such as Phalama, and some pupils from the Mulodi Community Crèche attended the event.

Fency was allegedly killed by her mother about a week ago. Her mother, Lutendo, was denied bail during her first appearance in the Mutale Magistrate's Court last Monday.

Vhuthuhawe was discovered dead, her body wrapped in a blanket and plastic after communities in Mulodi, Thengwe and surrounding villagers participated in

a frantic search for her.The principal of the Mulodi Commu-

nity Crèche, Ms Agnes Mmbengeni, said they were deeply saddened by Vhuthu-hawe’s death as she was a cheerful little girl who played happily with the other children.

Family spokesperson Avhashoni Net-shikweta said they had accepted what had happened, but they were worried about rumours that the little girl had been ritual-ly murdered. “We don’t know where they got this information because the deceased girl’s body parts were all found intact.”

Bright Khodani Makhadi, who obtained seven distinctions in the 2014 Grade 12 examina-tions, also won the inaugural TT Mulungwe Award for ex-cellence.

He is the f i rs t pupil of Kolokoshani Secondary School in Vuwani who obtained seven distinctions.

The TT Mulungwa Award is named after a former principal of

the school and seeks to encourage learners to compete for quality results at the school. Makhadi is now registered at the school of medicine at Wits. During an event at the school last Thursday, the six best pupils received prizes for their achievements. Makhadi used the opportunity to motivate the pupils and said they should not hate their teachers for pun-ishing them for not doing their

school work. “Success does not come easy. I used to hate punish-ment, but today I can see that my teachers wanted me to succeed. I am an achiever today and you, too, could do that if you dedicate your time to your studies and be focused on your work.

The principal of Kolokoshani, Mr Aaron Manenzhe, said Makhadi had done the school very proud.

“Utilise your backyard gardens to defend the revolution” - SACPThe relaunch of the Dr Tshenu-wani Farisani branch of the South African Communist Party (SACP) at Itsani at the weekend served as a platform for the leadership to urge mem-bers to continue “utilising their backyard gardens for food security”.

The branch was named in hon-our of Limpopo political icon and veteran Dr Tshenuwani Farisani.

During the relaunch, which took place on Saturday, members voted in unison for the retention of the current leadership.

The branch embarked on a programme to empower residents through backyard gardens last

year and this has been a resound-ing success, with some producing more for sale. To motivate them, those who excelled were given tools of the trade such as fertil-izers, seedlings and cash.

Speaking during the ocassion to relaunch at Dzindi Primary School, Mr Skinjar Ramugumo, secretary of the party in the Al-pheus Malivha district, said that “inasmuch as land still remains in the hands of the minority, members should utalise the land at their disposal and plant food to ensure food security and ensure that they defend the revolution.” He mentioned that the members must not only produce enough for

themselves, “but more through cooperatives that we could also sell to our neighbours”.

He lambasted tribalistic and xenophobic tendencies among communities.

Returning chairperson Michael Gumula said that, by retaining them as the leadership, it clearly showed that thecommunity had trust in them and that it gave them more power and momentum to work for the people. “We are happy you gave us a fresh man-date and we have to add speed to what we were doing. We will continue supporting the backyard programme that is benefitting a lot of our people.”

There were ugly scenes at the Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators league match between Makhitha Oscar Stars and Zoutpansberg Pow-erline at the Makhitha grounds on Saturday and the match was eventually abandoned

Stars are league contenders in Stream E and Soutpansberg Powerline are lying in the middle of the log.

According to the manager of Stars, Mr Oscar Sirovha, his team was leading 1-0 and the referee awarded them a penalty. He mentioned that after the referee pointed to the white spot, officials and supporters of Powerline stormed onto the pitch in protest. They allegedly accused the referee, Mr Solly Mavhandu, that he was biased.

It was also stated that the coach of Powerline, Mr Jack Machaba, had forced his way onto the pitch and confronted the assistant referee in anger.

The officials of both teams agreed that the match should go on after the incident, but the officials for Powerline allegedly set certain conditions, among others that the referees should withdraw the penalty.

The match officials then stated that they were not prepared to take any instruction from the team’s officials and the referee declared the game abandoned.

The administrator of Safa Vhembe, Ms Nancy Tshikumbane, said that the association was waiting for a match report from both teams and the referee before they would make a decision regarding the match.

It was all smiles and happiness as 60 dedicated employees of Musina Municipality recently received their long-service awards during a ceremony at the Musina Show Grounds.

The municipality, through the long-service recognition system, recognizes employees’ long relationship with the institution.

Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada praised the workers for their dedication in delivering efficient services to the people of Musina. “What you have done is nothing less than an embodiment of passion, dedication and perseverance that will surely set an excellent example for other colleagues. The municipality will never forget the marvelous job you have done. Thank you so much for your time and contributions to develop this municipality and transform it into what it is today.”

One of the recipients of the awards is Ms Dalsie Tshikota who has been working in the municipality for the past 15 years. She thanked the employer for recognizing them in style in front of other employ-ees. “This will motivate us to work even harder.”

Nthupheni Nkhumeleni needs a decent house.

Gogo Nkhumeleni still without proper houseNthupheni Nkhumeleni (58) applied for an RDP house seven years ago, but she is still living in a dilapidated mud hut.

Nkhumeleni, who hails from Phiphidi near Thohoyandou, said she had applied at the Thulamela Municipality for an RDP house in 2007.

She said she was told that her name was on the list and she only needed to wait. Much to her sur-prise, however, the municipality built RDP houses for people who had applied after her.

“I was warned by some mu-nicipal officials not to call the media about this. I have lived alone since my eight-year-old son was ritually murdered in 1984. His skeleton was later found by some people near the Tshipata dam between Phiphidi and Tshi-kunda village. His bones were

taken to Pretoria for a forensic investigation and were never brought back. My son was never buried and his soul will never rest in peace,” she said.

“My husband died in 1980 after he was knocked down by a car. I was working at the Tshivhase Tea Estate, but lost my job after a car drove into me in 1987. I can’t lift heavy objects because of the injuries I sustained, and I received no as-sistance from the Road Accident Fund,” she said.

“Last year, I consulted a social worker at the Phiphidi Clinic about my situation and they wrote a letter to the Thulamela Municipality to help me. The municipality sent a woman, known to me only as Sithodolo, who took photos of me. I have never heard from her since. I

rely on charity from my neigh-bours. My house always floods when it rains, and snakes often find their way in, which gives me sleepless nights. I will be so happy if I could just get a decent house and the remains of my son could be brought back for burial,” Nkhumeleni said.

The Thulamela Municipali-ty’s spokesperson, Ndwamato Tshiila, said they were aware of the problems faced by Nkhu-meleni. “We told her that if the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs allocated disaster houses to us, we would definitely build one for her. She is on the list and we won’t forget about her. We have sent a contractor to build a toilet for her, because we know she doesn’t have one,” Tshiila said.

New ideas to maintain high standard of service delivery

A well-known senior sales manager at the Old Mutual Thohoy-andou branch is to lead the Thohoyandou Unit E Civic Associa-tion. It was formerly called the Ha-Magidi Civic Association.

M r K B “ B o o i ” Phalanndwa was elect-ed the chairperson of the civic association during an event at Ma-gidi Primary School on Sunday. He took over from Mr Avhashoni Mulaudzi and said that better service delivery to the communities would be high on the list of priorities he and his committee wanted to tackle during their term in office.

“We want our com-munities to get better services, such as better roads as most of the roads in Unit E are not tarred and are slippery during rainy days. The days of illegal Zimba-bweans roaming around and stealing from the people should be a thing of the past,” said Phalanndwa.

According to Phalan-ndwa, he understands that communities in

Unit E are not willing to pay for services not rendered to them by the Thulamela municipali-ty, such as the sewerage system, which has not yet been connected to the residents. He urged the Thulamela munici-pality to give Thohoy-andou Unit E complete services, so that they can encourage communities

to pay for their munici-pal services.

“We promise to fight corruption,” he add-ed and said that they also wanted to root out crime.

The vice-chairperson is Mr Mbofho Makhadi, Ms Virginia Nndwambi is the secretary and Ms Phyllis Mulaudzi is the treasurer.

The council of Musina Municipality recently met its management team in a three-day strategic planning session in order to come up with fresh ideas and plans aimed at maintaining a high standard of service delivery.

Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada said the exercise was fruitful as the delibera-tions would help to maintain the pos-itive image of the municipality. “We met to define our strategy or direction, and making decisions on allocating our resources to pursue this strategy, including our capital and people. This was our opportunity to analyze our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, which include political, economic, social, and technological matters.” She added that during the meeting they had also evaluated how the resolutions of the previous financial year had been implemented “and we were satisfied that we did a wonderful job during the previous financial year.”

She said she was happy to note

that the municipality had developed its strategic plan in a way that was easily translatable into action plans. “We need to move away from the tra-ditional way of addressing high-level initiatives and over-arching goals which end up not being articulated into day-to-day projects and tasks that will be required to achieve our plans. We are surely going to turn things around this time.”

According to her, the strategic planning session assisted the munici-pality in “clearly defining the purpose of the municipality” and to establish realistic goals and objectives consis-tent with the mission in a defined time frame within the institution’s capacity for implementation and how to com-municate those goals and objectives to the municipality’s constituents.

“This has also assisted us in de-veloping a sense of ownership of the plan and to ensure the most effective use is made of the municipality’s resources by focusing the resources on the key priorities. The session has

also provided a base from which progress can be measured and establish a mechanism for informed change when needed.”

The occasion also served as a team-building exercise for the councillors and employees of the municipality.

Ramoyada says team work and team building were essential in a corporate environment to make the organization a better place to work. “Employees are the assets of every organization and its success is directly proportional to the hard work every employee puts in.”

The Liremi Foundation be-lieves that if pupils in the region are motivated, nothing can hold them back from achieving great marks and changing their lives for the better through education.

When schools recently re-opened, the foundation embarked on a journey to motivate pupils from various schools in the region. They started off by vis-iting Masedi Combined School in Tshikota, with the aim of motivating pupils to focus on their studies. The foundation’s chairperson, Mr Phathutshedzo Liremi, said if pupils were in-spired to focus on their studies, nothing could hold them back.

Through their campaign they have learned that certain chal-

lenges exist at the schools they had visited. They found chal-lenges such as shortages of classes and pupils who did not have proper school uniforms. “We were concerned about the challenge of learners who were studying under trees at Masedi Combined School. For that mat-ter we have alerted the Depart-ment of Education in Limpopo,” said Mr Liremi. The foundation had appointed the current Miss Makhado, Unarine Sinwamali, to be their ambassador.

She was also concerned about the school’s dilapidated infra-structure. “Most windows of the school’s building are shat-tered and doors are decayed. I wonder how children cope during severe weather conditions

such as during rainy days,” said Sinwamali. The Liremi Career Foundation and Miss Makhado had planned to adopt the school for the next two years. This will ensure that the school performs well, despite the dire situation.

A few of the pupils also re-ceived full school uniforms from the foundation. “The main aim of the Back to School campaign was to ensure that, as soon as the schools had reopened, learners were in class learning and teach-ers were in class teaching,” said Liremi.

Some of the schools that were visited include Madaheni Com-bined School, Milige Secondary School, Shongozwi Secondary School, Sintumule High School and Maluta Secondary School.

Strike action loomed last week at the offices of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) when the municipality failed to pay their workers their month-ly salaries on time.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) was quick to respond to the im-pending crisis. “The DA will be writing a letter to the MEC for Cooperative Governance in Lim-popo, Ms Makoma Makhuru-petje, to establish investigations into the financial affairs of the Vhembe District Municipality,” said the DA’s provincial leader, Mr Jacques Smalle, in a press release.

According to Smalle, the workers were supposed to be paid on 23 January, but only got paid on 27 January.

Smalle said that the situation was brought about by the VDM’s failure to manage their financial

affairs. “The municipality spends an estimated R20 million on sala-ries every month. It is alleged that the municipality is bankrupt and has less than R7 million in their account, which is not enough for salaries,” Smalle said. He added that a financial audit of the VDM’s financial affairs was urgently needed to prevent such a situation from recurring.

In response to a media enquiry regarding the alleged late pay-ment of workers, VDM’s munic-ipal spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, confirmed last week that workers had indeed received late payment of their salaries. “Vhembe workers were not paid on time due to cash-flow-man-agement challenges,” Ralushai said.

According to Ralushai, salaries are usually paid on the 25th of each month, but because of their

cash-flow problems, payment for the month of January was made from the 23rd to the 26th. He added that the VDM still had to finalise outstanding payments of medical schemes by the 27th.

Ralushai did not respond to any questions relating to the CDM’s current state of financial affairs and the DA’s claim that they are bankrupt.

“The municipality is fi-nancially stable. It is only cash-flow-management prob-lems, but as government sphere it will be resolved,” Ralushai said.

As to initial reports that VDM workers had embarked on strike action in protest against getting paid late, Ralushai confirmed that they were aggrieved. “They downed tools [last Tuesday], but are committed to their work as they turn up for work,” Ralushai said.

Vho-Namadzavho Wilson Nembambula delights at seeing his bananas.

He also sells fruit plants which he grows from seeds at his home.

A 69-year-old pensioner and re-tired building construction manager, Vho-Namadzavho Wilson Nembam-bula, has found a productive way of spending his pension days as a small, home-based farmer in Tshithuthuni village near Siloam.

Nembambula, who handed the reins of his building construction company to his sons four years ago, had turned his home yard into an orchard where he grows meal-ies, sugar cane, mangoes, sweet potatoes, avocados, tomatoes, bananas and spinach.

“I love this kind of activity because it enables me to see the wonders of creation when I witness seeds germinate and push up the soil to become these big plants and trees,” he said with a wide smile. “Believe me, there is a kind of spirituality or differ-

ent atmosphere the moment you step into my orchard. I feel it all the time.”

He added that he also wanted to cut short the distance which the people in his village had to spend to go and get vegeta-bles and fruits at the distant shops in Biaba and Thohoyandou.

He is also into small-scale bee farming, and he shares sweet, rich honey with his neighbours.

“He invited me into his home and gave me some fresh honey last Friday,” said the celebrated gospel singer Sammy Mutibi, Nembambula’s neighbour. “It tasted sweet and delicious. I am proud of the hardwork-ing Vho-Nembambula.”

Nembambula had no borehole in his yard and he couldn’t rely on communal water taps to sustain his plants. So, some

three years ago, he bought water pipes and connected them to a river some 4km away from his home. “It was not an easy task, but I had to be strong enough and lay my pipeline along the mountain,” he stated. “Today I have enough water for household use and for keeping my trees and plants wet.”

When his fruits and vegetables are ripe, he sells them in the streets of Tshithuthuni and Siloam.

He also plants seedlings, and once they have grown, sells the small trees which people can plant at their homes.

“Today I am confident to say God’s existence can be seen in the greenness and springing of plants,” he said. “I am continuing to find joy in my old age. A green life comes with old age.”

Pupils from primary and secondary schools around Vuvha village received trophies and cash for outstanding achievements during a recent awards ceremony held at Johannes Mulambilu High School.

The headmaster of Johannes Mulambilu, Mr Cal-vin Mamphwe, said that the ceremony was aimed at promoting cleanliness, dedication, faithfulness, self-esteem and a sense of value among the pupils. “Parents should check their children’s school work frequently, so that they are able to contribute to their performance in the classroom,” he added.

He appealed to pupils who are struggling to suc-ceed not to give up. “Don’t waste time in creating excuses. An unnecessary excuse will not make you an achiever,” he said.

He also mentioned the existence of muti to help pupils to achieve better results. “Pupils and teachers had to sweat it out in order to reap the rewards at the end of the year,” he added.

The Chief Whip of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Rudzani Ludere encouraged the pupils to take education seriously, so that they could face the challenges of the future with ease. He said the parents must cooperate with the Department of Education and other stakeholders for the benefit of education in the country.

“Failure does not necessarily mean that one has to stop pursuing your dreams. Failure gives you the opportunity to realize your mistakes and start afresh to rectify what you couldn’t achieve at first. We need to stress the importance of education because it is the backbone of prosperity and knowledge.”

He said those who did not get awards must not think that it was the end of life. “Never, ever give up in life because you can achieve more than what is expected of you.

Those who were not rewarded here today still have a chance to make it big in life. The most important thing is to develop a positive attitude in everything that one does. You need to believe in yourself and develop a working strategy that you will always stick to.”

Top pupil Rendani Maiwashe, who obtained seven distinction at the end of last year in the matric exams, advised the pupils to find successful people as role models. “Having role models in life usually helps a person to draw a picture of where he or she wants to be in future,” he added.

Maiwashe is at present a student in medicine at Medunsa. He received R5 500 and a trophy during the event.

TENDERSSome 80 parolees and proba-tioners from Thohoyandou Correctional Services took part in cleaning services of the Vhavenda King Toni Mphe-phu Ramabulana’s palace in Nzhelele last Wednesday and Thursday as part their free community services project.

The head of community cor-rections, Mr Farisani Malaudzi, said that the project was part of social integration of the parolees and offenders into the commu-nities they are living in. “We are also helping in rehabilitating them, and when they are working in the communities, they are showing that they are part of

the communities. It is important to give the offenders a second chance and also to provide them with temporary jobs,” said Mu-laudzi.

According to Mulaudzi, part of the community service is to demonstrate to the communities that they are sorry for what they have done and that they want to be re-integrated into their com-munities.

Vhavenda King Toni Mphep-hu Ramabulana was thankful to the group and said that they were showing that they felt sorry for their offences.

“As the leader of the Vhav-enda people, I am optimistic

that, when they go back to their communities, they will not com-mit more crime. They have to understand that crime does not pay; they have to work hard to get things alright,” he added.

One of the parolees, Mr Thom-as Mulaudzi from Ha-Rabali village in Nzhelele, said they were working hard to show that they were sorry for their crimes. “We are ready to be integrated into our communities,” he added. Mulaudzi (36) was sentenced to 17 years for armed robbery and served 11 years in prison. He said he learned that crime does not pay and he can advise others that education is the key to success.

Knowledge about childbirth can save livesOf the million plus women who become pregnant in South Africa each year, those who re-ceive antenatal care and quality childbirth education are the most likely to experience a healthy pregnancy and birth.

While the number of pregnant women accessing medical care has risen dramatically in recent years, fewer than half seek an-tenatal care before 20 weeks of pregnancy and a large percentage only first see a doctor or midwife when they go into labour. An even smaller number – about 5% - attend private antenatal classes.

“Knowledge is the key to a safe, successful pregnancy, birth and parenting experience,” says Lynne Bluff, national co-ordina-tor for the Childbirth Educators’

Professional Forum. “At the very least it will improve your birth experience, and at best it can save your life.”

Often, lifelong friendships are formed.”

Seventy-nine top Univen students received excellence awards during the opening of the 2015 academic year of the University of Venda last Thursday. Prof Nelson Mbulaheni Musehane has been appointed as a research fellow at the University of Venda.

Musehane appointed as research fellowA retired professor from the University of Ven-da, Prof Nelson Mbulaheni Musehane, has been appointed as a research fellow.

He has been appointed Research Fellow in the Department of African Languages in the College of Human Sciences for a period of three years. The appointment is renewable at the end of the term and will be reviewed annually.

“The purpose of the appointment is to encour-age critical discourse, enhance the department’s research capacity and to increase the number of

accredited publications attributed to the university,” said an elated Musehane. “In addition, a researcher is expected to publish at least one article in an ac-credited journal per year and may also be assigned limited mentoring duties in the department where he is appointed.”

Musehane had retired from teaching in Decem-ber 2013. He was the head of the Department of Af-rican Languages, Arts and Culture from 1995 until his retirement. He had previously shown extensive skills in research projects, which he had carried out at the University of Venda in the past years.

He had received several awards, including a certificate for being an active researcher.

“I am humbled and overwhelmed by the appoint-ment. It is a great honour to be associated with the institution that produced many legends, and I wish to acknowledge members of staff of Univen who groomed me and equipped me with research skills.”

In 2008, he received an award from the Univer-sity of Venda for being a researcher who made an outstanding contribution by bringing in more than R400 000 in research or consultancy funding. In addition, he received the Man of the Year prize in research, representing South Africa for outstanding contribution to the country as recognised by the American Biographical Institute.

In 2009, he was honoured by Madison Who's Who of America as one of its newest members to appear in the 2009 -2010 edition of the Madison Who’s Who Registry of Executives and Profession-als, having demonstrated exemplary achievement and distinguished contributions to the community.

“During my tenure at the University of Venda, I succeeded to publish more than 50 articles in national and international referred journals as well as other books, which include novels, short stories, poetry and folklore,” he added.

The mayor of the Makhado local municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, has given the top three pupils of Litshovhu Secondary School in Madombidzha R5 000. The mayor promised last year that he would give the top 2014 Grade 12 pupils the money to share among themselves. This money is meant to motivate them to work hard and focus on their studies. The mayor of Thulamela Mu-nicipality, Cllr Grace Mahosi, in partnership with South African Special Olympics, handed out sports shoes to learners at the Ri Songo Neta Day Care Centre at Gaba vil-lage last Friday.

“Ri songo neta” is a Tshiven-da term meaning “We must not get tired” and the centre has 48 children who live with disabilities.

Accompanied by several councillors and the Special

Olympics team of the district, Mahosi said that the government had a responsibility towards all children and their welfare. She said disabled children were at risk of not being properly pro-tected from neglect and abuse.

“We (the government) are building a united nation and these children are the foundation on which we are building the future of this country. We are committed to ensuring that all children have basic services that they can use for their educational

needs,” said Mahosi.The chairperson of the Special

Olympics Games in Vhembe, Mr Victor Maduwa, said as part of the war on poverty they had identified all schools with needy children and provides them with some things that they could use. The principal of the day-care centre, Mr Samuel Tshibal-anganda, thanked the mayor and special olympics team for embarking on a programme that seeks to ensure that children are well taken care of.

Vital victory for Mutandani Pull TogetherMutandani Pull Together con-tinued to collect vital league points by beating Thohoy-andou Development FC 3-1 in the MMK Administrators Soccer League at the Tho-hoyandou Wisdom grounds on Sunday.

Development created some promising moves from behind in the opening minutes, but their strikers let them down by shoot-ing aimlessly. Their overlapping midfielder, Mulalo Ragadza, had his chance in the 15th minute. He re-ceived a neat pass from Zwivhuya Neluheni and shot wide from just outside the box.

The visitors from Lwamondo knocked on Development's door in the 24th minute. Ronald Midana tried his luck from the edge of the box. His volley hit the crossbar and bounced out of the field of play for a goal kick.

That did not kill their fighting spirit as they continued to play like a team afterwards. Pull Together were rewarded with a goal

in the 29th minute. Mazwifhi Khangale was on target, fol-lowing a mix-up within the box.

Thohoyandou Development lost cohesion in the middle of the park after the goal. They were severely punished and Pull Together made it 2-0 before the half-time whistle. Their second goal came via Ronald Midana, whose close-range ground cutter was too hot for the Development keeper, Zwoluga Mabuda, to handle.

Things turned against Pull Together three minutes into the last half. Their right back, Tsum-bo Netshifhefhe, was given his marching orders, following a second bookable offence. That did not stop Pull Together from scoring their third goal in the 64th minute. Robert Nedzamba beat the keeper with a volley after beating the offside trap.

Can Joe stop Park?The much-awaited ABC Motsepe League match between Joe Express and Bellevue Winners Park will take place at the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

Express are still in shock after their recent 5-7 loss against Bilika All Stars at the Giyani Stadium. Winners Park are sharpened to kill after beating Dynamos 2-0 last weekend.

Express must keep a watchful eye on Bellevue’s dribbling wizard, Velile “Mlungu” Mdaka, or else they will never know what hit them at the end of the game. Bellevue are currently leading the pack, while Joe Express in the sixth spot on the log. Derrick Mafela of Express will miss tomorrow’s match. He saw red in their game against Bilika All Stars last Saturday.

Polokwane United will play against Great North FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium and Dynamos will entertain Mosesetjane All Stars at the Giyani Stadium. Magezi FC will enjoy the home-ground advantage against Bilika All Stars, while Blue Rocks and The Dolphins will meet at the Nkow-ankowa Stadium. Blue Rocks have a reputation of not honoring their league fixtures.

Modimolle Aces will take on Mighty FC in Modimolle and Giyani Hotspurs will host Winners Park at the Giyani Stadium. Al Terrors are gearing themselves up for a tough game against Lephalale Young Killers at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium in Modimolle.

Bilika All Stars win their “political war” against Joe Express

Leopards readyto maul CosmosAfter a break of seven weeks, the affiliates of the National First Division will be in action again on Wednesday, 11 February. Black Leopards will have a mountain to climb as they will host the pace setters, Jomo Cosmos, at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

It will be time for the Thohoyandou outfit to put their new recruits to the test. Lidoda Duvha acquired the services of two top strikers, Mpho Mmbebe and Roggert Nyundu, last week. Nyundu is from Polokwane City, while Mmbebe was playing for Lamontville Golden Arrows before accepting an offer from Black Leopards. Leopards’ new coach, Mr Zeca Marques, will sit on the team’ technical bench for the first time.

Although they will be playing in front of their home crowd, it will not be easy for Leopards to collect the full points in the match. Jomo Cosmos collected full points in their last seven matches, a record which pushed them to the top of the log.

The spokesperson of Black Leopards, Mr Berry Ramunenyiwa, appealed to the fans to buy their entry tickets at Computicket, saying no ticket would be sold at the stadium. The game is scheduled to start at 15:30.

FC Cape Town will host African Warriors at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town. Baroka will travel to Richards Bay, where they will play against Thanda Royal Zulu at the Umhlatuze Sport Complex and the Maluti FET College and Santos will fight for league points at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in Phuthaditshaba.

Highlandspark and Garankuwa United will meet at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa, while Lamontville Golden Arrows will have a date with Milano United at the Philippi Stadium in Cape Town. Vasco da Gama will fly to Durban, where they will lock horns with Royal Eagles at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban. In the final match of the weekend, Cape Town All Stars will host Witbank Spurs at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

When Joe Express travelled to Giyani to honour their ABC Motsepe League match against Bilika All Stars at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday, little did they know that they were going to fight a political war.

It emerged during the game that Bilika All Stars were holding a political grudge against the Vhembe-based side.

At some stage, Joe Express were leading 2-0 but

things turned against them as the game progressed and the final score was 7-5 for Bilika All Stars. Bilika All Stars were leading 4-3 when the teams adjourned for half time. They scored the fifth in the opening minutes of the last half. While celebrating their fifth goal, some of the players of Bilika were heard shouting the words “mi nga hi alela kuri hi kuma masipala wa hina, kambe hi ti points mi nge swikoti nwina Vhavenda”.

That loosely translates to “you can deny us the right to have our own municipality, but with the league points you can’t, you Vendas”. This was a direct political provocation to Joe Express as they are based in Vhembe District, which is dominated by Venda-speaking people.

Judging from the utterances, it was clear that the Bilika players felt the Venda-speaking people were denying the residents of Malamulele the right to

have a municipality of their own outside Thulamela Municipality. That did not, however, disturb the flow of the game and everything went well until the final whistle was blown.

In the other matches, Great North FC beat A1 Terrors 2-0 at the Seshego Stadium, Giyani Hotspurs lost 0-2 to Lephalale Young Killers and Magezi FC narrowly beat The Dolphins 1-0 at the TT Cholo Stadium. Magezi are in the second position, following the victory.

Bellevue Winners Park fought hard to earn three important points against Dynamos when they beat them 2-0 at the Giyani Stadium. Mosesetjane All Stars beat Polokwane United 3-1 at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium in Modimolle. The match be-tween Mighty FC and Blue Rocks was declared a walkover for Mighty, as Blue Rocks failed to honor the fixture.

Bokisi Scientist silence Mashau Movers

Mpheni defenders hammer Tshiozwi

Bokisi Scientist silenced the evergreen Mashau Movers 1-0 in their match in the Hlanganani stream of the Makhado Local Football Asso-ciation at the Mashau grounds on Saturday.

The score was not a true reflection of the game, as Scientists were dictating terms in all departments throughout the game. Norman Mkhari combined well with Gilbert Mbungele and Chester Maluleke in the forefront. Mkhari committed a big blunder when he shot straight to Movers’ stranded keeper, Rodney Mulaudzi, in the 20th minute.

Scientist’s took the lead in the 37th minute. Chester Maluleke caught the Movers' keeper off guard and blasted in a half-volley from inside the box. Movers missed two clear chances early in the second half, with Fhatani Ravele the culprit in both instances.

Scientist utilized their substitution chances when they introduced Collen Baloyi, Albert Chabalala and Amin Mkhari. Chabalala added more life to the fading midfield with his dribbling skills. Movers were forced to effect a change to their starting line-up when they replaced Rabelani Mufamadi and Mpho Ndou with Arthur Nesamvuni and Lotus Mudau in the 70th minute. Their introduction did not change the flow of the match.

A midfielder of Movers, Collins Maboho, was yellow-carded for tackling Ashley Chauke from behind. Tiyani Baloyi of Scientist was lucky to escape with a yellow card after tackling the Movers midfielder, Dakalo Mukwevho, roughly. Adivhaho Magoro of Movers should have equalised two min-

utes before the end of the match, but he shot wide.

The current log leaders of Stream E of the MMK Ad-ministrators League, Mpheni Home Defenders, hammered Tshiozwi Dynamos 4-1 in their match at Tshiozwi on Sunday.

The match started at a fast pace, with both sides threaten-ing to hit the target. A striker of Defenders, Ndaedzo “Let Them Dance” Mareda, was a difficult man to mark. He eluded the opponents' defence as he kept running from the start of the match. He broke the ice in the 26th minute when he caught the keeper off guard.

Sakkie Makhuvha scored his team's second goal after finishing

off a square pass from Moses Li-soga seven minutes later, making the half-time score 2-0 in favour of Defenders.

Dynamos' right back, Nyathi Muvhango, was booked for an illegal tackle on Marvil Mabatha.

Dynamos' keeper denied Defenders several sure goals through his acrobatic goalkeep-ing. He stretched to the limit to fist Marvil’s Mabatha's volley out of play for a corner kick. At that stage, the game was 56 minutes old.

Dynamos scored their only goal in the 60th minute when Mashudu Nengovhela hit the net after receiving an excellent

square ball from China Maruli. Moses Lisoga of Defenders registered his name on the score-sheet when he tried his luck from the 35m area. Dynamos' keeper, Vhuthu Netshiobvani, misjudged the flight of the ball and saw it cross the goal line.

After the goal, Dynamos threatened to retaliate after bring-ing their top striker, Velaphi Mphaphuli, back to the middle of the park. Mphaphuli distrib-uted dangerous passes to his front runners, who shot astray on numerous occasions. Ndaedzo Mareda scored his team's fourth goal late in the match and com-pleted his brace.

Winners Park beat Dynamos in Mopane derby

Bellevue Winners Park kept their title hopes alive by beating their neighbours, Dynamos FC, 2-0 in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

Dynamos had themselves to blame for the poor result as they wasted numerous scoring opportuni-ties throughout the game. They could have opened their account in the ninth minute, but their left flank, Ronny Mabunda, shot wide from the penalty area with the Winners Park keeper, Hlayisani Ntimane, already beaten.

Winners Park threatened to score in the 18th min-ute. The former Basel FC dribbling wizard, Velile Mdaka, unleashed a volley from the 25-meter area. The ball hit the woodwork and bounced back into play. Rendani Madega, the Winners Park bulldozer striker, had his chance in the 26th minute, but his half-volley missed the target by inches.

Dynamos were the first to effect change to their starting lineup.

They sacrificed Winners Baloyi, who gave way to Golden Ngobeni in the 34th minute. Winners Park were leading 1-0 when the referee, Mr Chris-topher Mugeri, blew the half-time whistle. Blessing Maluleke headed home after a free kick that was taken by Velile Mdaka.

The opening minutes of the second half saw Dynamos pressing hard in their search for the equalizer. Their slender striker, Lyborn Maluleke, missed a sitter after receiving a killer pass from Musa Mabunda. Ronny Mabunda of Dynamos was warned with a card for a dangerous tackle in the 59th minute.

Winners Park introduced Lebohang Sithole and

Masenamela for Vel-ile Mdaka and Senior Maluleke respectively in the 65th minute. Win-ners Park lost shape at the back as the game progressed, but Dyna-mos failed to capital-ize. A substitute, Mpho Masenamela, made his presence felt when he scored Winners Park's second goal nine min-utes before the final whistle.

12-Goal spectacleBilika All Stars came back from a 0-2 defi cit to beat Joe Express 7-5 in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

Joe Express approached the game like a house on fi re with their midfi elders, Juliet Nguvhane and Ishmael Jimo, distributing dangerous passes to the goal poachers. Their leading goal scorer, Thembisani Nevhulamba, was on target fi ve minutes into the game. He went loose from the centre of the pitch and beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

It took the visitors only three minutes to increase the margin. Levy Matshavha blasted in a rocket, following a great pass

from Ndivhuwo “Segere” Ravhuhali. Bi-lika pulled one back through their captain, Rito Tshuma, in the 18th minute. Them-bisani Nevhulamba stamped his authority once again in the 20th minute. This time around he beat two defenders in a row and showed the keeper the wrong way.

Bilika came back strongly soon after-wards. Rito Tshuma scored their second goal in the 26th minute. Express intro-duced Thinavhuyo Mashau for Ishmael Jimo two minutes later. All Stars found the equalizer via Themba Chauke, who fi nished off a rebound and the home side took the lead in the 38th minute. Vincent Mabunda scored from a free kick to make

it 4-3 at half time.Joe Express were reduced to 10 men in

the 46th minute. Moses Mafela was given his marching orders for a late tackle on Milliford Ngobeni.

Aubrey Ndou of Express obstructed Mduduzi Twala within the box and the referee, Mr Daniel Rathogwa, awarded a penalty to Bilika, whic Rito Tshuma converted.

Thembisani Nevhulamba pulled one back from a free kick. Bilika scored two more in quick succession via Vincent Mabunda and Thabang Sechoene. Them-bisani Nevhulamba scored again in the 86th minute to bring the fi nal score to 7-5.
