Man survives leopard attackThe residents of Bennde Mutale, a village which borders the Kruger National Park, are living in fear after the attack of a 29-year-old Zimbabwe-an livestock herder by a leopard.

The attack took place last Thursday, while the herder, Mr Tenious Chibari, was in some nearby bushes with a friend looking for his goats. The friend managed to run away unharmed, while Chibari battled with the creature for dear life.

Luckily he escaped with only injuries to his head, hands and shoulders. The incident has sent shockwaves through the village where residents fear that it might be still near, as park offi cials were not able to capture or kill the animal.

Narrating his ordeal from his bed in the Donald Fraser Hospital, Chibari said it was by luck that he survived the attack. “We were out there looking for some goats which did not come back

from the veldt, when I heard my herd dog barking loudly. I realised that there must be trouble some-where but did not know that the leopard was so close to me. The dog ran towards me and then I realised that leopard was chasing the dog. I stood as still as possible and did not move as I knew it might attack me also,” he said. He said the leopard suddenly attacked him and grabbed him by the shoulders. “I fell down and it then attacked my

The Makhado Municipality has extended the period for inspection of the new valuation roll and the lodging of objections till 30 April this year.

The Soutpansberg Ratepayers As-sociation (SRPA) said that they had written a letter requesting an exten-sion to the municipality, whereafter the municipal manager, Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali, met with the SRPA manager, Mr Phillip Olivier.

The SRPA gave their reasons for requesting the extension as the inac-cessibility of the roll on the Internet and/or difficulty in accessing it, and the fact that many residents find it hard to get to the municipality in person for inspection of the roll.

A resident was told by one of the relevant officials that there are many objections, but that a number could not be given, since objections are lodged at different offices of the mu-nicipality and also at regional offices.

Olivier said that residents would have to realize that this was their final chance to inspect the roll and lodge an objection if they did not agree with the valuation. “Residents are urged not to wait until the end of April to look at the valu-ation of their properties. You might miss the bus and end up paying the high rate for the next four years. The time to lodge a complaint is now. It will be futile to complain afterwards. We do not foresee that there will be another extension,” Olivier said.

Property owners can inspect the valuation roll at offices C041, C001 or C034 at the Makha-do municipal buildings in Krogh Street. The completed objection form must be returned to the same offices. An

alternative way to obtain property valuations would be to SMS or phone your stand number and address to Olivier of the SRPA on 082 679 8324 or 071 657 3415 for the valuation. “We have had group queries where one resident would send a whole list of stand numbers and we reply with the valuations,” Olivier said.

Those who wish to obtain their valuation from the municipal website at this point in time may have diffi-culties, unless they have downloaded the valuation roll while it temporarily appeared on the website of the mu-nicipality. In February, the whole valuation roll for residences and businesses appeared on the website. In the last week of February, the roll was split into different sections to make access more convenient, al-though it was not stated what parts of town appeared in which sections. This week the valuation roll was found to have disappeared completely on the website, with the exception of the agricultural roll, which was complete from the farm Aangenaam Uitzicht to Zyvergat.

PhalaPhala FM donated schools shoes to 40 disadvantaged schools during a ceremony at the radio station’s studios in Thohoyandou last Thursday.

According to the station manager, Mr Freddy Sadiki, they have sympathy with pupils who suffer the pain of going to school barefoot.

“Young pupils are our future leaders, and we have to encourage them to study

hard,” said Sadiki. He added that PhalaPhala FM had a

corporate social investment project, where they partnered with businesspeople and communities to do something for disad-vantaged pupils.

The project started five years ago and the listeners responded positively.

“We have a huge number of poor rural schools that need serious attention,” added

Sadiki. One of the principals who attended

the event, Ms Tshililo Tshiwanammbi of Sheshe Primary, said she was thankful for the donation of shoes to the poor pupils. “It is painful to see poor pupils coming to school without proper school uniform and shoes. Poor pupils with empty stomachs cannot concentrate on learning at school,” said Tshiwanammbi.

The Makhado Municipality has extended the period for the inspection of the new valuation roll and the lodging of objections till 30 April this year. This week, the valuation roll was found to have disappeared completely from the website, www.makhado.gov.za, with the exception of the agricultural roll. The objection form, however, is available under Documents and Publications on the website.

The SAPS at Siloam are appealing to the public to help them identify people who are planting dagga in the area. This follows the arrest of Mr Tshinanne Dama (47) from Tshedza village in Nzhelele. Dama was arrested last Wednesday and appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate's Court the following day. He was released on R500 bail. Police confiscated 37 kg of dagga after receiving information that he was selling it. “Most people think that we only arrest those who are selling, but we also apprehend those who plant it. It should be known that dagga is illegal in this country,” said Const Nyaweleni Ramaano. Photographed with some of the confiscated dagga are, from left to right, W/O Tshimangadzo Ndou, Mr Tshinanne Dama (suspect), Const Rendani Muila and W/O Moses Ramagwala.

Makhado police reach out to residents of New TownThe Makhado police's station commander, Col Francois Ram-ovha, recently interacted with the residents of New Town during the station's community outreach meeting.

According to the police's spokes-person, W/O Takalani Madzhigili, the meeting was intended to address the community regarding the forma-tion of street committees and also to give an overview of crime trends in the policing sector.

The meeting was also attended by, among others, the Makhado cluster commander, Brig Alex Seopa, Cllr Abraham du Plooy, representatives from the pastors' forum and the community policing forum.

Ramovha informed the meeting about the demarcation of the policing area into sectors for better manage-ment of crime trends. He indicated that the station has three sectors: "The first sector is made up of the entire town, namely Tshikota, Makhado Park, Eltivillas and New Town," said Madzhigili. "Sector 2 includes Vleifontein, Mailaskop, Munzhedzi, Mavhungeni, Tshathogwe and the farms that are part of this vicinity. The third sector is Banderlierkop, Maelula, Matshavhawe, Khunda and all the farming communities."

Ramovha indicated that quite a number of cases were reported since February 2014. He highlighted some contributing factors to the crimes, among others as follows:

* Dysfunct ional community structures such as CPF and the Sector Crime Forum;

* Neighbourhood watch is not being practised;

* Street committees are not yet established;

* The influx of un-documented foreign-

ers, who are being employed as domestic workers and in the con-struction industry;

* Insufficient interaction between the SAPS and the community and breakdown of communication be-tween next-door neighbours;

* Domestic and construction workers are not properly profiled by employers.

Seopa stated that policing should not be viewed as a political institution and warned the police and communi-ty members not to conduct policing in a political manner. "Crime affects all the people regardless of age, social status, profession, gender, race or financial status," Seopa said. "Street committees require people who are willing to go out and work with the police. Business owners who deal in airtime must register all their vouchers."

Seopa concluded by expressing appreciation for the level of interac-tion which was shown in the meeting. The station provided contact numbers of the different commanders in the station for communities' use. The contact numbers are 082 565 8171 (station commander), 082 573 3289 (visible policing commander), 082 451 7154 (detective commander) and 082 728 9975 (sector commander).

The new Makhado Home Affairs district office, which will be in oper-ation soon, will curb the challenges of congestion and long queues. The new building, which complies with modern technology, will acceler-ate the offering of services, said a spokesperson for the department.

The new district of-fice, which was built by the Department of Public Works, was offi-cially handed over to the Department of Home Affairs last Wednesday.

Speak ing dur ing the event, the Minister of Public Works, Mr Thulas Nxesi, said the project was finished in record time. “Despite all the problems we have had in the past with corruption and misman-agement, an important centre of excellence remains within the Department of Public Works which allows us to deliver services,” he said.

The Department of Home Affairs used to operate from a 100m2 office in a building which it shares with other government de-partments. The limited space usually delayed services.

Nxesi added the R12 million project was a good example reflecting

the department's new approach which will have proper structures and the right systems. “As public works, we have learnt from our mistakes and we are addressing them,” he said.

The new 1 200m2 district office is located in Anderson Street. It includes facilities such as security, an adequate

waiting area, a fingerprint area, a baby room, a matrimonial room, archive space, an immigration office, a pass-port-processing area, a boardroom, disabled facilities and parking. “This area deals with lots of immigrants, hence we allocated a big space for immigration,” he said.

The Home Affairs' chief opera-tional officer, Mr Thulani Mavuso, said that only a few aspects were left that needed to be finished before the official opening. “This came at the right time while the department is in the process of issuing the new smart identification cards,” he said.

The Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado confirmed this week that a trainer jet had to be docked due to a minor accident.

Officer commanding of the AFB Makhado Brig-Genl Schalk van Heerden confirmed on Wednesday that a BAE Sys-tems Hawk 120 trainer jet was on its final approach to land at AFB Makhado when the accident occurred last Tuesday, 25 March.

DefenceWeb, a South African

defence and security news portal, quoted an unidentified source as saying that the Hawk was trim-jammed in a downwards position right before touching down. As a result, the Hawk bounced back into the air, which caused a portion of the landing gear to break off.

Van Heerden added that a Board of Inquiry had yet to con-firm a possible technical failure as the possible cause of the acci-

dent. He also said that there were no injuries to the flight crew.

According to him limited dam-age was caused to the nose wheel of the Hawk.

The Hawk trainer jets fall under the control of 85 Combat Flying School based at AFB Makhado.

The school received 24 lead-in fighter trainer (LIFT) Hawks during 1999 as part of a strategic defence package.

Phadziri Bus Service invests in educationGrade 12 pupils in the Kuta-ma and Sinthumule area have pledged to commit their time to attending extra classes.

This follows the recent launch of an enrichment project for them. The project, which is funded by Phadziri Bus Ser-vices, ensures that Grade 12 pu-pils in the area can attend extra classes without paying any fee.

Speaking at the programme’s launch ceremony held at the Phadziri Bus Service depot in Madombidzha, Ms Maria Phad-ziri, a family representative, acknowledged that the company was inspired by the support of the community. “We felt that we would not just take from the communities, but that we should also plough back where we are conducting our business,” she said.

The company used to sponsor one school in the area, but start-ing from last year they felt that they should support the whole community.

They then funded the en-

richment programme last year with at least R680 000. The money was used to pay teachers who were conducting the extra classes.

Soutpansberg West circuit benefited massively from the programme last year. The circuit improved the Matric results by 7.7% and obtained an 81.87% pass in the 2013 matric results.

Three educational centres provide extra classes. The cen-tres at Kutama, Sinthumule and Litshovhu are part of the enrichment programme. The programme encourages pupils to share knowledge with their peers from other schools and the offered subjects are divided according to the exam papers. The classes are offered during the Easter, June and September holidays at the three centres in the area.

Ms Tshami Lishivha, a learn-er representative from Sinthu-mule Secondary School, called all the Grade 12 pupils to attend classes and ensure that they ben-

efit from them. She said it would motivate the donors to continue helping. “The project is meant to educate us enough to be fully equipped when we move to tertiary level. They have offered us an opportunity to progress in limited time,” she said.

Soutpansberg East Circuit manager Mr Falaza Baloyi told pupils to be thankful for the opportunity.

He told pupils to understand and know that their background does not determine their results. “It is not the background that produces good results but the determination of the learner,” he said.

This year, Phadziri Bus Ser-vices funded the programme to the amount of R497 500. Vho-Thovhele Rudzani Sinthu-mule pleaded with other busi-ness entities in the area to uplift the communities. He said taxi owners and other business own-ers in the area must also plough back into the community.

Hawks to investigate Makhado councillorA former DA councillor at the Makhado Mu-nicipality is currently being investigated by the Hawks for possible fraud. It is alleged that he sold RDP houses meant for the poor in Tshikota.

Councillor Itani Sikhwari resigned from the DA on Sunday and announced that he had now joined the ANC. Sikhwari was the DA’s proportional representative on the council.

One of the accusations against Sikhwari is that he sold house number 1326 in Tshikota to Ms Ellen Moeti from Vleifontein for an amount of R34 000. Ms Moeti said she was desperate to find a house and when she was approached by Sikhwari, she thought it to be an opportunity to secure her own home in Tshikota.

Sikhwari’s legal representative compiled the necessary documents and, in May last year, she paid over a deposit of R19 000. In August, she paid the balance of R14 000. When a period of time had expired during which nothing happened, Moeti got suspicious and went to the municipal offices to en-quire about the site. According to her, the officials indicated that the specific house had already been allocated to another person. "I then went out to search for the house, using the number allocated to me. I was shocked to discover that someone was already occupying the house," she said.

Moeti also complains that she did not receive much assistance from the municipality. They al-legedly told her that they could not act on behalf of someone who had paid a bribe. She then went to her lawyer, Mr Desmond Mphaphuli, who cor-responded with Sikhwari. In January, Sikhwari paid back R20 000 and promised to pay back the balance before the end of February. Mr Mphaphuli commented this week and said that Sikhwari had visited him on the 24th of last month. He promised to pay the outstanding amount the next day, but this did not happen.

Ms Moeti may not be the only one complaining about the conduct of the councillor. Two women from Madombidzha and Rathidili are also alleg-ing that they bought RDP houses from Sikhwari.

They prefer to remain anonymous at this stage, but re willing to provide documentation showing the deposits they had made. They are still without any houses.

The spokesperson for the police in Limpopo, Col Ronel Otto, confirmed this week that a case of fraud is being investigated. The case was referred to the police’s special unit, the Hawks. According to a spokesperson for the Hawks, Mr Paul Ramaloko, their investigations are continuing.

The spokesperson for the municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, confirmed that Sikhwari had resigned as DA councillor and that he had indicated he was joining the ANC. Bobodi said they had not received a formal complaint from any of the people alleging that they had bought sites from the councillor.

Sikhwari was contacted for a response, but he did not want to comment. “You are journalists, do your job,” he said.

The Leo triplet in the spotlight

Makhado municipality endeavours to acquire a clean audit

During Sanlam Limpopo’s yearly awards function, recently held at the Tzaneen Country Lodge, Mr Matodzi Mudzunga (right) received an award from a sales consultant, Mr Arno Combrinck, for writing 15 policies or more per month.

Weather permitting, the Sout-pansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) will hold its stargazing evening on Saturday, 19 April, from sunset onwards.

The club’s stargazing evenings are open to the general public and everyone is welcome.

The waning moon rises at 21:30, giving a couple of hours of dark skies.

Three of the five naked-eye planets will be visible. Jupiter will set early in the evening in the west and Mars and Saturn can be seen for most of the night.

One of the deep-sky targets we will point the scope at is called the Leo triplet, a grouping of three gal-axies consisting of M65, M66 and NGC 3628, situated 30 million years

Pitfalls keeping the Makhado local municipality from obtaining a clean audit were addressed two weeks ago during a public hearing held at the municipality’s council chamber.

Members of the municipal public account committee (MPAC) asked the municipal manager about the problems that were identified by the auditor general (AG) in the 2012/2013 financial year. The municipal manager was also asked if the municipality had taken any resolutions to prevent the re-occurrence of those problems.

The municipality obtained a qualified audit in the previous financial year (2012/2013) after many years of receiving a disclaimer from the AG. Mr Mutshinyali acknowledged that it must not be taken

from us. The three are spiral

galaxies in one field of view and look dissimilar at the eyepiece because their galactic disks are tilted at different angles to our line of sight.

for granted that after 10 years the municipality had ultimately moved to a qualified opinion. He said even though they were working on obtaining a clean audit, the public should know that the municipality had spent the full mu-nicipal infrastructure grant (MIG) in that fi-nancial year.

He added that there were several improve-ments which signified that the institution was in good hands.

Some of the pitfalls established by the AG include irregular expen-diture, incorrect inter-pretation of accounting standards and inade-quate inventory control. Mr Mutshinyali said that a few institutions, such as the provincial

treasury and the AG had agreed to assist them in their efforts to achieve a clean audit in this financial year (2013/2014). “If we were able to move from a disclaimer to a qualified opinion, what will prevent us from obtaining a clean audit?” he asked.

The municipality has developed an ‘audit action plan’ which will address those setbacks established by the AG.

“We always try in our management meetings to address our setbacks through this audit action plan. The appointment of the new performance manage-ment system (PMS) manager ensures that directors are evaluated,” said Mutshinyali. He said the PMS, internal audit committee and the integrated

development plan (IDP) officials managed to work together to address problems. “This collaboration will ensure that we improve and achieve a clean audit in this financial year (2013/2014),” he added.

The municipal speaker, Cllr Lindiwe Mohale, said that the council would like to receive progress reports indicating how the municipality manage-ment was resolving those setbacks.

She said even though there were few irregulari-ties established by the AG, the municipal manage-ment should be commended for managing to spend 100% of the MIG. “It shows that the management resolutions will help us to obtain a clean audit in this financial year,” she said.

Beloved Lwamondo teacher laid to rest

Nationwide cervical cancer vaccinations launched at two Musina schools

Lwamondo Secondary School’s beloved teacher, Mr Robert Takalani Mutavhatsindi, was laid to rest during an emotion-al funeral at the Tshisahulu graveyard on Saturday.

Mutavhatsindi (49) of River-side, Tshisahulu, shot himself

Charmain Dhliwayo and Khodani Ndlovu from Musina were the first two pupils who were vaccinated during the Limpopo provincial launch of the campaign to combat the human papilloma virus (HPV) among school-going girls in Grade 4.

The launch was conducted

at Messina Primary School and St Martin de Pores School in Musina two weeks ago Tuesday. A total number of 66 school girls were vaccinated during the launch.

When launching the vacci-nation campaign at Messina Primary, the MEC for Health and Social Development, Ms Dipuo

Letsatsi-Duba, said the initiative was part of the fight against cervical cancer in women. She added that South Africa was the first country in Africa with such an initiative.

“As a responsible country, we feel that it is important to focus on preventing diseases rather than treating them.”

at his home in the early hours of Monday morn-ing last week. He was the first deputy principal at the school. Circum-stances leading to the shooting are not known as he did not leave any suicide note.

Colleagues, fami-ly members, friends, pupils and community members came in their numbers to pay their last respects to the beloved teacher. Pupil lined the road as a guard of hon-our to the graveyard. Teachers, led by the

principal, Mr Tshimangadzo Tshubwana, served as pallbearers

Tshubwana said the passing away of Mutavhatsindi was a big blow to the school. “He was loved by everyone and was my pillar of strength who was always ready to go the extra mile. He was a hard

worker who did his work selfless-ly and was part of the teachers who ensured that the school produced a 100% pass rate in the 2013 Grade 12 examinations. He will be sorely missed by the Lwamondo Secondary School community,” he said.

follow suit in order to make their children safe from cervical cancer.”

Letsatsi-Duba said it was im-portant for parents to use the op-portunity because the vaccination would be available free of charge at school, or else they would be charged a fee if they were doing it privately. “I have no doubt that this HPV vaccination campaign

is an investment in the health of our young girls and that of fu-ture generations of women from contracting cancer of the cervix.”

Musina Mayor Carol Phiri said statistics showed that one in every eight women who died in South Africa died from compli-cations as a result of cancer of the cervix.

“In South Africa, 5 743 new

cases of cervical cancer are reported each year. About 3 027 of these are fatal. Cervical cancer has been ranked number 13 on the list of causes of death among women, resulting in 67 000 cases and around 3 500 deaths annually. We are happy that our province has also taken this threat seriously by launching this initiative here.”S h e e n c o u r a g e d

young girls not to fear the vaccination as it is there to make their lives safer.

“We are not only coming here to launch this initiative. We will also regularly visit the schools to monitor how the initiative is being implemented. We would also like to thank the parents who signed the consent forms to allow us to vaccinate their children. We believe that more parents will

“Live a balanced life ...” African Son, another hit album from Jazzman Records

The road to the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival

Many South Africans might not have heard about him, but in his home town of Musina, Obby Nkanyane is an example of in-spiration and hard work, despite wearing many hats.

Obby is a well-known gospel artist who helps other local budding artists by giving them an opportunity to record their music in his studio, the Elegant Sound Production. As an operator at the local mining company for the past five years and a staunch member of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), he also has the responsibility of balancing his family life and church activities.

“It is not easy to balance all these things simultaneously, but all of them are equally important to me. During the day, I’m at work at the mine. Monday and Thursday nights are my days for working in the stu-dio. If the work is too demanding, I also work on Saturdays and I spend Sundays at church with my wife Winnie and my three kids,” he said while adding the fi nal touch-es to his latest album.

He said he was in-spired to love music by his late mother, Nkhu meleni Lucy Ngwenya, who used to sing for the legend-ary Adziambei

Band. “Seeing her singing on a daily basis was a turning point in my life and I told myself that I wanted to be like her one day. I wish she were still alive, so that she could see my success and smile at me. Her death was a serious blow to me.” As a well-celebrated local artist, Obby has three successful albums under his belt.

“My fi rst album, Fukedza Mavhi-da (Filling up graves), was released in 2001. It came to my attention that the rate of death was becoming high in our town and I decided to express it through the album. It was also a warning to my fellow young people to lead a clean life. I then released my second album, Mme Motsoadi, in 2004. This was a tribute to my loving mother and it was also well received by the local music frater-nity. My third album, Africa, was released in 2009.” He is completing the fi nal touches to his fourth album, Ntate Jehova, which will be released in due course. He says his plan is to build a top-class recording studio to contribute to the development of

music in the country. “I still need addi-tional equipment and space, but I cannot afford e v e r y t h i n g as I’m doing i t f rom my pocket.”

The man does not have a distinctive posture, but he is fi nally making a mark in the local jazz music fraternity.

Born in the small border town of Musina, Alfred Tshimane Chuene goes by the stage name of Jazzman. He recently re-leased his debut album, titled African Son, through his own label, Jazzman Records.

Chuene started his musical career way back in 1993 while he was still very young. “I used to play different musical instruments at the local African Gospel Church. I became so interested in music that I would hang around the church, playing musical instruments even after the services.”

He said his breakthrough came after joining the local jazz band, Mindrands. “The band was a hit among the locals and we used to stage powerful shows in Musina. I played a signifi cant role for the group to record their album in a Jo-hannesburg studio at the time. Unfortunately, the album was not released, as a result of other unsorted logistics with the recording company. But that did not deter me from following my musical dreams until I decided to go solo.” He says there were individuals who played a role in his musical career.

“These include Prince Nxasana from Kwazulu-Natal, the local jazz music master Peter Mbedzi, local recording studio owner Obby Nkanyane and Musina artist Patric Masindi.”

As a seasoned artist, Chuene has done recording sessions with artists like Paku and Vhembe Heritage and Ambani. As a performing artist, he has also shared the stage with big names like Mzwakhe Mbu-li, Stimela, Colbert Mukwevho, Jonah Moyo, Zozo, Malandolo and Cornerstone.

As a multi-talented artist Chuene displays his talent by playing bass guitar, electric piano, brass and drums on his album. African Son is composed of 10 tracks: Party Time, the title track African Son, One big family, Mercy, Don’t make choices for me, Sympathy, Man about town, Love and Cherish, Unity, and Mustown.

For 18 years the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival has been at the top of international jazz entertainment in Africa.

In the past, the Joy of Jazz has hosted some of the world’s best jazz practi-tioners. It has also become a breeding ground for rising stars.

According to the organisers, the belief that jazz is music for the elite is a fl awed one. Jazz clubs, jazz associations and jazz appreciation societies have become an integral feature of South Africa’s jazz

culture and heritage. They are found across the country and the jazzophiles’ passion for their genre is expressed through weekly sessions where a variety of styles, including smooth jazz, town-ship swing and hard bop, are played and jazz CDs are shared. These gatherings also serve as forums where jazz-related issues are discussed and debated. An important milestone in the development of these organisations was the formation of a national body, the South African Jazz Appreciators Associations (SAJAA) in

August 2013 in Durban. Since its incep-tion, the Road to Joy of Jazz is gaining popularity among young musicians who need exposure as well as the patrons of the jazz clubs. This year’s edition will visit Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KZN. The Limpopo SAJAA super session will take place on Saturday (5 April) at the Honeymoon Lodge in Seshego.

Youths from different churches of the Zion Apostolic Old Mission Church (Zaomic) in the Vhembe District visited the Tshimbupfe area on Sunday, to motivate school children to concentrate on their education and not participate in the abuse of alcohol and drugs. The chairperson of the Zaomic youth movement, Ndivhuwo Munyai, says that they need people who are working for God with their hearts. He also indicates that education must be the youths’ fi rst priority. “We need youths who will lead by example,” Munyai said.

A baby crocodile that was recently caught in a fi sh trap in the Sand River provided an opportunity for the members of the eco club of Mopane Intermediate School to hone their skills as environmentalists. Mr Mugivhi of Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, together with nature conservation offi cials under the guidance of Ms Lorraine Nemutanzhela and some of the pupils of the school, released the 69 cm crocodile at Nzhelele Dam last Monday.

Groceries to celebrate Human Rights Day

The general manager for traffi c and safety in the Department of Roads and Transport in Lim-popo, Ms Litshani Mulaudzi, has urged road users not to look at traffi c offi cials as ene-mies but as people deployed to ensure that laws and rules were followed.

She was speaking during the passing-out parade of 57 new traffi c offi cers from Mpumalan-ga. The parade, which was also witnessed by 250 new recruits from all over Limpopo, took place at Manenu Traffi c College about two weeks ago.

Mulaudzi said her department was well aware of the carnage

The Venda Muslim Welfare Trust is making inroads into the hearts of the people of Thohoyandou by addressing social challenges and bridging the racial divide.

Not long ago, they organised medical specialists, who treated members of the community free of charge. They recently also donated many litres of blood. On Human Rights Day they donated a bakkie load of groceries to dis-advantaged children at Ngovhela. Children of the World Focus Vic-tim Empowerment sang joyful songs while offl oading the bakkie full of groceries.

The chairperson of the trust,

businessman Ayub Madina, said they decided to celebrate Human Rights Day with the children at the centre. “We cannot celebrate human rights when there are still people going to bed on empty stomachs. We felt as a trust that the best way to remember this day would be by contributing positively to the betterment of humankind,” he said.

Ms Takalani Madima, the founder of the centre, which houses 86 children, said they had many challenges as she was not funded and was using money from her pocket. “We operate with no budget at all and most of the time we run short of basic

necessities. We are very thank-ful and we lack suitable words to thank our beloved brothers who made this sacrifice. This will leave a lasting impression on the kids and we just pray that will God bless their businesses, that they prosper and continue to assist those in need,” she said.

Vhembe’s executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, who was also at the centre, accompanied by the Chief Whip, Cllr Tshifhi-wa Dali, said he was impressed by the good work the centre was doing in the community.

The centre looks after vulner-able and orphaned children and also offers a variety of services.

The acting mayor of Mutale, Cllr Gilbert Netshisahulu, presents a trophy to the best student, Mr Abraham Mavuso during the passing-out parade.

taking place on the country’s roads and was closing all loopholes to address it.

“Speeding and drunk-en driving are some of the worst enemies on our roads and many innocent lives have been lost through them. We are determined to stop

this, and to show our commit-ment, we are currently training a further 250 new traffi c offi cials.

She said the recruits would be ready and dispatched to the different parts of the province by February 2015.

“Our aim is to have traffi c officers on our roads day and night, because some road users take advantage of the night and ignore traffi c rules. We will be everywhere and will exercise zero tolerance,” said Mulaudzi.

She said they had the best training facilities and urged her counterparts in Mpumalanga not to open an own college. “It is not easy; continue using ours,” she

said jokingly. On behalf of the mayor of

Mutale, Cllr Gilbert Netshisahulu urged the new offi cers to go out and to serve their communities faithfully.

He also discounted the rumour that the college was to be moved elsewhere in the Polokwane area.

“I can assure all of you here that an amount of R25 million has been set aside for the im-provement of this college, which shows that the government has no intention of relocating it. As host municipality, we are very proud to have such an institution, which is known to produce high-quality products,” he said.

A five-year-old boy sustained critical burns on his beautiful face after his fa-ther allegedly grabbed him and forced his head into a pot of boiling water for stealing mashonzha (Mopani worms) at Mmatswale in Musina.

The incident that shocked the whole of Limpopo happened on 13 March. The father allegedly tried to hide it from the world by keeping his son indoors.

According to the Limpopo police's spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the 23-year-old father claimed that he was busy cooking mashonzha when the hungry boy grabbed a handful from the pot and ate it.

Mulaudzi said that the father saw the boy eating the mashonzha and got very

angry. He then allegedly forced the boy's

head into a pot full of boiling water. “The father accused his son of stealing the Mopani worms he had been cooking,” said Mulaudzi.

The boy, in great pain, screamed for help, but the father allegedly continued to force his face into the boiling water. The neighbours finally came and spoke with the enraged father. Only after four days did a community member alert the police about the child's plight and the police came to arrest the suspect and charged him with attempted murder.

The boy was later taken to hospital for treatment.

The boy's 44-year-old grandmother

said that the incident had shocked the family. “We feel sad about this incident,” she said. “He loved his son very much and we are failing to understand the reason why he burnt his face.”

The suspect appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court on 19 March and his case was postponed to 20 March for further investigation and for a formal bail application. The case was, however, pro-visionally withdrawn on 20 March 2014.

"It was found that there were missing details in the docket," said Const Tsietsi Lamola of the Limpopo Police Media Centre. "Statements have been obtained and the docket is ready to be placed on the court roll for prosecution, the date of which will be determined soon."

VDM desperate to nab pump thievesThe Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) has initiated a system to curb the vandalising of boreholes and the stealing of municipal in-frastructure needed to supply residents with clean water.

The head of technical services at VDM, Cllr Lucas Manyuwa, announced the programme during the Makhado municipal imbizo held last Friday at the Tshakhuma Apostolic Faith Mission church. Executive committee members of the Makha-do Municipality and some councillors visited Tshakhuma to assess the level of services delivered by the government over the past three years.

Cllr Manyuwa said a consultant was already on site to install the system and he was confident that the system would be able to curb the theft. “The system will surely lead us to arrest those who are stealing our expensive equipment. Those thieves are hindering service delivery to our communities,”

he said.Despite the chal-

lenge of vandalism, the municipality also em-barked on a programme to maintain and replace the most dilapidated water pipes and con-necting new pipes in the Vhembe region. Cllr Manyuwa said the con-

tractor had already started working and at least 6 000 connections would be finished before the end of June.

Speaking at the imbizo, Tshakhuma chief Thovhele Naledzani Madzivhandila commended the Makhado municipality’s projects that were initiated in his area. He insisted, however, that the municipality rebuke the contractors.

“The projects are implemented, but contrac-tors just do shoddy work and leave within a few months,” he said. Chief Madzivhandila said the municipal officials should have gone to their area earlier to address challenges, including fixing reservoirs, since the people were drinking water from the streams. He said most of the projects were halted before they were finished. “The RDP houses were not even built. The contractor just delivered cement and bricks, and when we asked him he said he was coming back. We have not seen him again,” he added.

More than a dozen members of the public who come from poor families were given food parcels by SASSA during the imbizo. Cllr David Mu-tavhatsindi said the municipality would address the challenges of the community of Tshakhuma. “Some of the issues could not be addressed by us, such as those from the education sector and other sectors, but we will connect residents with the right authorities that will help them,” Cllr Mutavhatsindi promised.

Maweja Takers hold Rockers to a draw

The Makhado Local Football Association (MLFA) is finan-cially in good hands. This was said during the association’s annual general meeting in the Makhado show grounds hall on Saturday.

When presenting the annual report, the president of the asso-ciation, Mr Joseph Maphaha, said that the MFA was a non-profit organisation.

The challenges the league are facing regarding the manage-ment of women's football in the area were highlighted during the meeting. The annual report also revealed that, during the 2012/13 soccer season, 149 clubs

appeared before the league’s dis-ciplinary committee on charges ranging from assaulting match officials to causing the abandon-ment of games.

During the meeting, it was also announced that eight teams were promoted from local football associations to the Safa Vhembe MMK Insurance League. The teams are: Elim Mabedengwa, Mukondeni Ratanang, Tshi-puseni All Stars, Maelula New Mates, Muraleni United Broth-ers, Nzhelele All Stars, Mabvuka Real Vultures and Ramukhuba FC. “It is our responsibility to sustain our organization, so that, when we look back in decade to

come, we will be able to smile when we observe our successes. Besides building for the future, development is our core mandate. Unlike previous seasons, when we reported that not a single se-nior club was involved in devel-opment, several teams had also established development teams during the past year,” he added.

He said that the association set aside a budget for training all coaches and it would be compul-sory for all teams to send coaches to attend the training. He also praised the two sponsors, Lim-popo Dairy and Vho-Makhadzi Funerals Services, who still continue to sponsor the league.

In their MMK Funeral Services League match at Tshakhuma on Sunday, Maweja Takers shared the spoils 1-1 with the log leaders, Rockers FC.

The game was characterized by wasted scoring opportunities, thus keeping the fans on the edge of their chairs. A striker of Takers, Victona Mahlaule, found himself on the wrong side of the law in the 14th minute. He kicked the keeper of Rockers, Ndivhuwo Musie, intentionally.

Takers were the first to draw blood. They were awarded a free kick in the 25-meter area in the 28th minute. A former player of Basel FC, Shonisani Rambebu, scored from the set piece with a volley.

Pressure started to mount on the defence of Tak-ers as Rockers launched numerous attacks from the midfield. The wall of Maweja developed cracks as the game approached the half-time mark. Rockers managed to find the equalizer six minutes before the half-time whistle. Emmanuel Neswiswi gave the ball the final touch, following a mix-up within Maweja’s danger area.

The visitors from Makwarela started to play defensive football thereafter. They even replaced their striker, Emmanuel Neswiswi, with Ofhani Mudau as part of solidifying their defence. Maweja replaced Kharendiwe Tshiambara and Nndwamato Ndou with Takalani Ramagalela and Khuliso Net-shaulu respectively.

Emmanuel Neswiswi of Rockers hooks the ball, while Shonisani Rambebu of Maweja blocks the way.

A former Speaker of the Limpopo Legislature, Dr Simon Farisani, has urged communities to respect elderly people and treat them as a valuable asset because of the knowledge and experience they have in society. “Although our elderly people are recognized constitutionally and legally, not all young people honour them as valuable assets. Some of young people abuse our elderly people by taking the old age pensions meant to make the elders survive,” said Farisani. In our photo, Farisani is seated second from left, wearing traditional attire. Workers demostrate outside the office before handing the memorandum of demands to the administrative officer.

Workers at the Conservation of Medicinal Plants Project at Maila recently downed tools because of a lack of payment.

More than 100 workers said they had not received their De-cember wages.

The R20-million project was launched in August 2010 by Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabu-dafhasi.

It was set to draw attention to the need for the development, promotion and protection of natural and biological resources and their associated indigenous knowledge.

The project consists of the establishment of a nursery, lab-

oratory, guard house, medicinal plant garden, research centre, and fencing off of the whole facility. The medicinal plants are used to treat ailments such as coughs, headaches, fever, constipation and high blood pressure.

One of the employees, Mr David Mokwena, said that it was a bitter pill to swallow when he discovered he had not been paid. “I checked with my colleagues, only to realise that none of us had been paid,” he said.

Mokwena added that his family thought that he might have been paid and misused the money. "We want our money, because we’ve already planned

on how we are going to use it.”The project was supposed to

be finished last year in July and they extended their contract by five months, but it is still not complete.

The workers claim that they have not been paid since De-cember. As a result, they say, they had to start borrowing from micro lenders to make ends meet. “We are tired! These people promised long ago that they would fix this,” said Mokwena.

An administrative officer of the company, Ms Dorah Thavha-na, confirmed that they had received the memorandum and they would give it to the owners.

Coordinator Mpho Motsei (left) hands over pamphlets to pupils during the exhibition.

Pupils from around the Vhem-be district were told to make informed career choices and also to apply early for places and bursaries at tertiary in-stitutions.

This was during the career exhibition held at the Thohoyan-dou library grounds on Saturday. More than 4000 pupils attended the exhibition.

The exhibition is the brain-child of youth leader Mr Mpho Motsei of Hasi Incorporated, a Vhembe-based events manage-ment company.

Several exhibitors such as Univen, the Department of Ed-

ucation, Exarro, Eskom, NYDA and others had stalls where pupils received pamphlets and relevant information about their chosen careers.

Event coordinator Mpho Mot-sei said they felt they should give something back to the commu-nity. “Many of our pupils find it very difficult after completing their Grade 12. They have no-where to go because of not pre-paring beforehand. We felt there was a gap that should be filled, especially in rural schools where there are no resources like the In-ternet and information centres.”

Mutshidzi Malala (21), a

Grade 12 pupil at Sam Mavhina Secondary, wants to pursue a degree in financial management at the University of Johannes-burg next year and said she is impressed. “We just thought that we are in matric this year and everything would just be brought to us on a plate.

There are so many things we did not know that we learnt at the exhibition.

I am empowered and, from now on, I can make an informed decision about my future. The experts were so helpful,” she said.

Pupils must make informed decisions

Rural Majiga Chess Club wants to produce championsMabena steers Rospa to victory

It is do-or-die for Leopards

Two former chess champions started a club for the youth at Ha-Tshisele village last year and are hoping that they will produce many champions.

Best Rannenyeni was the chess cham-pion in Gauteng and Muthupei Mauba is a former Limpopo chess champion, who also played chess overseas.

The club is situated in the Majiga tavern and was initially started to keep the youngsters busy over the weekends.

“We are now a group of about 30 people who gather every weekend at the Majiga tavern to play chess. It helps to release stress and our youngsters’ power to concentrate is improving”

According to Rannenyeni, the chair-person of the club, chess players perform well at school in subjects such as maths and science because they can concentrate for long periods.

“We are also visiting nearby schools,

telling them about the chess skills we can transfer to them,” added Rannenyeni.

One of the members of the club, Itani Mulaleni, said playing chess had made him and others more open-minded and they were always busy, even during weekends.

Rannenyeni is appealing to chess lovers and school children interested in learning the skills to phone him at 076 396 2216.

Kenneth “Mabena” Lesia’s goal was good enough to earn Rospa United three points at the expense of Mosesetjane All Stars.

The Safa second division match was played at the University of Venda Stadium on Saturday. Rospa United moved one step up on the log, following the victory, and are now in the 12th position with 20 points accumulated from 18 outings.

Bellevue Winners Park dropped points in front of their home support-ers. They drew 1-1 with Modimole Aces at the Lulekani Stadium in Phalaborwa.

Black Leopards must beat Chippa United in order to enhance their chances of winning the league title when they meet in their all-im-portant NFD match at the Philipi Stadium in Cape Town this evening (Friday).

Chippa are currently leading the pack with 51 points, seven ahead of the Thohoyandou outfit. Should Leopards lose the match, they can

forget about bringing the league title to Thohoyandou and start preparing for the promotional playoffs. The team that will finish the league pro-gramme on top of the log will gain automatic promotion to the Absa Premiership Division, while the next two and the second-last team in the Absa Premiership will be engaged in the promotional play-offs to deter-mine the second team to be promoted

MMK draw for Tshikota Chelsea and Oscar StarsTshikota Chelsea and Makhitha Os-car Stars played to 1-all draw in an important MMK Insurance Brokers match played at Tshikota on Saturday.

The absence of Chelsea’s playmaker, Sharif Ramabulana, was evident from the onset as there was no one to win and

distribute balls from the middle of the park to the goal poachers. Star’s front runners, Lucky Funyufunyu and Taka-lani Mbekwa, did not live up to the fans’ expectations and were tightly marked.

Stars threatened to score in the 12th minute. Funyufunyu won the loose

ball in the 35-me-ter area and un-leashed a volley from just outside the penalty box. The ball missed the target by inch-es, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans. Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. The veteran player, Patrick Mulaudzi, won the ball just behind the cen-tre line and ran towards the right

corner from where he dished up a square pass to Walter Murwanthi, who beat the Stars keeper, Faith Ratombo, with a ground cutter.

The visitors from Makhitha knocked on their opponents’ door three minutes later. Itani Selota tried his luck from the edge of the box. Chelsea keeper, Thuli Mhlanga, stretched to the limit to exe-cute a brilliant save. The half-time score was 1-0 in favour of Chelsea.

Stars introduced John Marindi for Itani Selota.

His introduction changed the run of the match as he distributed dangerous balls to his frontrunners. Chelsea were reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute. Patrick Mulaudzi handled the ball and, as it was his second bookable offence, he was shown red.

The home team captain, Innocent Maphatha, handled the ball inside his penalty area and the referee pointed at the white spot. Stars’ keeper, Faith Ratombo, scored to make the score 1-1.

Skaka Makgopo of Chelsea “flies” high for the ball, and Chester Murwanthi keeps his eyes on the ball.

Chester Murwanthi of Chelsea stops the ball, with Skaka Makgopo jumping into the air.

Walter Murwanthi of Chelsea controls the header, while Godwin Mahuwa is ready to attack.

Basel FC will need a miracle to escape rele-gation. They lost again last Saturday. The Dol-phins beat Basel 3-1 at the Eldorado Stadium in Polokwane. Basel are rooted at the bottom of the log with only 6 points.

Magezi FC forfeited their leadership to Blue Rocks after losing 1-2 to Giyani Hotspurs. They were leading the pack for two weeks until last Saturday. Blue Rocks are now shining on top of the log after beating Joe’s Express

2-0 at the Makwarela Stadium. Joe’s Express dropped two steps down on the log following the defeat. They are now in the 10th position with 24 points.

Just like Basel and Phungo, All Stars are also in a dangerous position. They are in the second-last position on the log with only 11 points. This follows their 0-1 defeat at the hands of Dynamos. Mighty FC could not absorb the pressure from Winners Park, who beat them 2-0 in Seshego.

Great North FC shared the spoils with Ray Pillars, following their 2-2 draw at the Oscar Mphetha Stadium.

to the elite league.According to the assis-

tant coach of Leopards, Mr Joel Masutha, the spirit is high in their camp after beating Malu-ti FET College 3-1 at the Charles Mopedi Stadium last Saturday.

Masutha confirmed that their leading goal scorer, David Zulu, will be available for selec-tion this afternoon. Zulu was out of action for two weeks as a result of injury.

Jomo Cosmos and Vasco da Gama will meet in Thembisa tomor-row. Thanda Royal Zulu will undertake a journey to FC Cape to rub shoul-ders at the NNK Rugby Stadium. Roses United will have a date with Blackburn Rovers.

Baroka must beat Witbank Spurs in order to keep their hopes of taking part in the pro-motional playoffs alive. They will battle it out at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Sunday will see Af-rican Warriors take on Santos, Milano United and Sivutsa Stars will meet and the Maluti FET College will visit United FC at the Moruleng Sta-dium in Rustenburg. David Zulu.

“To be disabled doesn’t mean unable”People living with disabilities were urged not to look down on themselves or to hide, because disabled does not mean unable. They should know economic development needs everyone, disabled or not.

The call was made by Mr Takalani Nemutanzhela, repre-sentative of the Department of Economic Development, Envi-ronment and Tourism, during the Vhembe District economic summit for people living with disabilities at the Thohoyan-dou Indoor Sports Centre on Monday.

According to Nemutanzhela, the aim of the summit was to let

disabled people know that “they are not left on the periphery of economic development; they are also counted in the centre of economic development.

At the end of the economic summit, we want the disabled people to stand up and be count-ed in the economic activities available in the district,” added Nemutanzhela.

When officially opening the summit, the portfolio head for special programmes in the Vhembe District, Cllr Constance Mphaphuli, said the government recognized the activities of peo-ple living with disabilities. “We hope that people living with

disabilities will get first-hand information on how to access services suitable for disabled people,” said Mphaphuli.

One of the people living with disabilities, Ms Ntungufhadzeni Mandinda (38), said the econom-ic summit was an eye opener for her and other people who live with disabilities. “Now, I will now learn how to access funds for starting a business as I had little knowledge before in this regard. People took advantage of our suffering as disabled people and robbed us of everything. Life will now change for the better for people living with disabilities,” said Mandinda.

Cllr Constance Mphaphuli (centre), photographed with Cllr Rapson Rammbuwani (second from right) and some of the people living with disabilities during the summit.

First defeat for Atlantic Stars

All the First Division results

Mission Young Rovers booked a place in the stream final of the Vho-Makhadzi Soccer Challenge by beating Mutsha Atlantic Stars 6-5 in the semifinal at the Mutsha Khwekhwe grounds on Sunday.

Rovers were strong at the back, but their midfielders did not show any appetite for goals. That gave Atlantic enough chance to dictate terms in the middle of the park. Their efforts paid off in the 18th minute when Shonisani Netshimboni beat the keeper with a long-range volley.

Black Leopards stood against all odds and collected the maximum points at the expense of Maluti FET College, whom they crushed 3-1 in their National First Divi-sion League match at the Charles Mopeli Stadium in Phuthaditjhaba on Saturday.

Rendani Ndou scored a brace while the third one came from Leonard Ntshangase.

The Thohoyandou lads were lead-ing 3-0 when the teams adjourned for half time, but their fighting spirit faded as the game progressed. The students pulled one back via Freddy Sefako late in the game.

Rovers threatened to score in the 27th min-ute. Their overlapping midf ie lder , Gundo Kharidzha, watched in disbelief as his volley missed the goal mouth by inches. That did not kill their fighting spirit as they finally found the equalizer through Trevor Kharidzha nine minutes before the end of the first half.

Atlantic Stars effect-ed two changes to their original lineup in the last half. Ndivhuwo Ra-mudzuli and Fhumulani Mutshinya gave way to Lufuno Vhumbani and Murendeni Mahwasane respectively. Young Rovers responded by replacing Adivhaho Ligege with Rendani Dzhuguda.

Atlantic took the game to their opponents soon afterwards, but it was difficult for them

to find their way through the defence of Rovers. The score remained 1-1 until the end of regulation time and the winner was determined through penalty shootout.

Atlantic Stars converted four from the penalty spot through Rodney Gumani, Caswell Murendi, Vhonani Munyai and Shonisani Netshimboni while Tshifhiwa Mangaladzi shot straight to the keeper. Young Rovers scored with all five attempts. It was Atlantic Stars’ first defeat in seven months.

The Mphephu SAPS are seeking help to trace the 33-year-old Mr Kgoto Dzhivhuwo. He is wanted in connection with a rape incident that occurred in November last year. Police in the Nzhelele area have been trying to get hold of him for the past four months. He allegedly raped a woman at the Dzanani shopping complex. Any member of the public who knows about Mr Dzhivhuwo’s whereabouts can contact their nearest police station or call the Mphephu police station at 015 970 3000 or 015 970 3023.

Baroka FC failed to stop Chippa United, to whom they lost 1-2 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday. No goal was scored in the first half, but Baroka found the net in the 64th minute. Their celebrations were cut shot as the visitors from Cape Town found the equalizer three minutes later. Chippa United took the lead during the referee’s optional time. They are now leading the pack with 51 points. Black Leopards are in the second spot with 44 points.

Witbank Spurs man-aged to hold African Warriors to a goalless draw at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank. FC Cape Town were too strong for Vasco

da Gama, whom they beat 2-1 at the Parow Park Stadium.

Santos were unstoppable when they destroyed Roses United 4-1. The defeat plunged Roses United deeper into the relegation quagmire. Sivutsa Stars beat United FC 1-0, while the match between Thanda Royal Zulu and Milano United ended in a 2-2 draw. Milano United stand an outside chance of finishing their league pro-gramme in the third spot on the log, a position that allows them to partic-ipate in the promotional play-offs.

Blackburn Rovers lost 1-2 to Jomo Cosmos at the Sugar Ray Zulu Stadi-um in Durban.

Rendani Ndou scored a brace for Black Leopards against Maluti FET College.

It remains to be seen wheth-er Joe’s Express will made amends and collect full points against Basel FC when they meet in their Safa Second Division league match at the Seshego Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Joe’s Express are still fresh from a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Blue Rocks at the Makwarela Stadium.

Joe’s Express are on the safe side when it comes to relegation, while Basel have every reason to

panic. Time is fast running out for them as they are currently lan-guishing at the bottom of the log.

Phungo All Stars are bracing themselves for a tough match. They will travel to the Nkow-ankowa Stadium for their match against Blue Rocks.

The mood is good in the camp of the Rocks after they beat Joe’s Express. Mosesetjane All Stars will play in front of their home crowd. They will host Mighty FC at the Mahwelereng Stadium. It

will be time for Mosesetjane All Stars to take revenge for the 0-1 defeat which they suffered at the hands of Rospa United last Saturday.

The Mopani derby between Dynamos and Bellevue Winners Park will be staged at the Burg-erdorp Artificial Turf Stadium in Tzaneen. Dynamos are a tough side to beat nowadays. They managed to collect maximum points in their last three matches.

Another local derby will be between Magezi FC and Great North FC. It will be staged at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium. Magezi are one of the hot contenders for the league ti-tle, despite the fact that they lost their match against Gi-yani Hotspurs last weekend. Ray Pil-lars will host The Dolphins at the Se-shego Stadium.

Sunday will see Winners Park lock horns with Giyani Hotspurs a t the Mahwelereng Sta-dium. Lephalale Young Killers will undertake a jour-ney to Modimolle. Their match against Modomolle Aces will be staged at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium.

Alan Sutton, managing director of Sabie Valley Macadamias, pictured during the opening of the Valley Macadamias receiving depot in Levubu. Photo supplied.

Valley Macadamias opened a receiving depot in Levubu on 13 March to service the increasing macadamia nut supply in the area. The Levubu region contributes 12 000 tons of the 40 000 tons of macada-mias produced nationally.

The high demand for macada-mia nuts worldwide is having a positive spin-off in South Africa as the industry expands to meet the demand. The market in China alone is growing by 30% per annum, forcing South African farmers and processors to gear up to accommodate it.

The receiving depot in Levubu will supplement Valley Macadamia’s two facil-ities in Mpumalanga, namely Alkmaar Valley Macadamias and Sabie Valley Macadamias, to feed the 12 500-ton capacity of the Valley Macadamia Group.

Speaking at the offi-cial opening of the de-pot, Alan Sutton, man-aging director of Sabie Valley Macadamias, said that the new depot signalled continuous growth in the industry. “We have seen massive growth in the number of plantings of macada-mia orchards and some of our customers are growing by 30% year on

year in order to meet the demand, which is mostly coming from China. As such, the market is relatively inelastic as the demand is outstripping supply because China’s market is growing at exponential levels.” He added that while markets in Europe remained important, demand was tapering off and the continuing economic crisis was placing pres-sure on potential market growth, which is cause for concern.

The growth in the macadamia nut industry also bodes well for the National Development Plan’s aim to create one million jobs in agriculture. Macadamia nut

farms require 1 labourer per 2 hectares. Currently, South Af-rica has around 17 000ha under cultivation and the number is expected to grow. A processing plant with an average throughput of 4500 tons per year employs a further 150 people.

Sutton concluded that the macadamia nut market was in an excellent position and the increasing demand for nuts boded well for farmers. “The options are getting better and better for farmers, bringing greater secu-rity to the sustainability of the industry and ensuring better farm gate prices.”

Uniforms for Musina’s EPWP workers

Makhado Municipality's mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, was encouraging the public to focus on their health through exercising regularly. He and members of the executive committee recently exercised at a local gym. With him in the photograph is Cllr JP Underwood, head of disaster, moral regeneration and the pastor's forum at the municipality.

Mayor Carol Phiri, photographed with some of the EPWP workers.

Maria Semata could not stop smiling as she received her work suit, a pair of safety boots, a sun hat and gloves. She is one of the 120 extended public works programme (EPWP) workers who received new uniforms from Musina mayor Carol Phiri at the Nancefield municipal offices a fortnight ago.

“We are very happy because we know that our leaders care for us.

This will motivate us to work even harder,” said Semata jubi-lantly. The municipality spent R78 000 to buy the much-needed uniforms.

The EPWP is one of the gov-ernment's programmes aimed at

providing poverty and income re-lief through contract work for the unemployed. It was launched in April 2004 to promote economic growth and create a sustainable development.

When handing over the uni-forms, Phiri said there were many benefits of providing uniforms to the workers. “One of the purposes of uniforms at work is for the communities to identify the workers with the municipal-ity. Besides complying with the Labour Relations Act, wearing uniforms at work also makes our people to learn personal respon-sibility. Workers who follow the dress code and wear a uniform show pride and responsibility.”

She added that uniform was a

symbol of an organization and showed uniformity in the peo-ple's working towards a common goal. “These uniforms will help community members to recog-nize our workers easily.”

Phiri said there was a psycho-logical aspect to work uniforms as well.

“It gives a feeling and sense of belonging for employees. They feel that they are part of the organization and it gives them a psychological bend of mind which makes them more loyal to the organization they are work-ing for. We want our workers to know that they are a part of us, and one great way to show them is by providing them with these uniforms.”

Sweet victory for Madombidzha StarsMadombidzha Western Stars beat Mpheni Home Defenders 2-1 in their MMK Insurance Brokers league match at Ma-dombidzha on Sunday.

The boys from Mpheni ap-proached the match like a house on fire, with their midfielders distributing telling passes to the strikers. They threatened to score five minutes into the match when Rendani Ncube forced his way through the defence of Stars and passed the ball to Given Ndou. His at-tempt missed the target by inches.

The home side missed three easy opportuni-ties in the 10th, 12th and 18th minute re-spectively. The play-ers who made the Stars fans jump up from their seats in disbelief were Maanda Magoro, Lucky Masutha and Thabo Ma-tuba.

That did not demor-alise the team’s players as they continued to play like a united team. Defenders lost shape in the midfi eld and Stars capitalised to score their second in the 56th min-ute.

Thabo Matuba beat three players in a row and blasted in a rocket from inside the box.

The second half saw Stars pressing hard in search of more goals. Realizing that their

chances were slim, Stars aban-doned their positions and packed themselves at the far back.

Stars made two substitutions in the last half.

They introduced Percy Muno-noka and Ridovhona Radamba respectively.

The replacements proved to be a clever move on the part of the Stars technical staff.

The keeper of Defenders aban-doned his position and advanced out of the penalty box. He was caught off-guard by Phumudzo Mafukata, whose volley bounced outside the box and landed inside the net.

Oscar Ramantswana was rep-rimanded with a card late in the match, following a dangerous tackle on Aaron Lisoga.

Lizzel Ramukhuvhathi of Defenders (left) and Phumudzo Mafukata fi ght for the ball.

New soccer gear for Mashau BafanaFormer players around Mashau, led by businessman Mr Pat Madavhu, donated two new soccer kits and other sports equipment to a newly formed team, Mashau Bafa-na, at Mashau last Saturday.

The managing director of Madavhu Investment, Mr Pat-rick Madavhu, said his com-pany was happy to contribute towards the development of soccer in the rural areas. “This is part of our company’s mis-sion of giving something back

to the community. We hope other companies will learn that it is important to reward mem-bers of the community, because they are the ones who made us what we are today.” He said that his company would always give support to sport.

Mr Elvis Maphalaphathwa, the coach of the team, was on cloud nine after receiving the donation.

“This is one of the most memorable days in the exis-tence of our team,” he said.

“We thank our sponsors for their kind gesture, and we hope they will continue assisting the deprived communities.”

He urged all stakeholders to work as a team for the develop-ment of young players in their area. “The time for pointing fi ngers is over. We must join hands to create a better life for our children. By encouraging our children to take sport seri-ously, we are also winning the war against crime, poverty and unemployment,” he said.

During the handing over of two new soccer kits and sport equipment are at the back, from left to right, Taffi e Ramashia, Jones Maphalaphathwa, Pat Madavhu and Takalani Muambi. In front are Nicolas Muambi, Leornard Muambi and Ernest Madavhu.

A cloud of sadness is hanging over the camp of Joe’s Express, after they lost 0-2 to Blue Rocks in their Safa Second Division League match at the Makware-la Stadium on Saturday.

The home side had nobody else but themselves to blame for the defeat as they could have sealed the game in the fi rst half. Their strikers, Edwin Ramphabana and Dzivhuluwani Simba, were unlucky. Ramphabana received a pre-cooked pass from Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali and his ground cutter hit the side netting.

Dzivhuluwani Simba missed a fortune a little later. Instead of chipping the ball or try-ing other possible w a y s , he shot aimlessly from close range. The ball went far wide. Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali of Express was booked for dangerous play in the 19th min-ute. He tackled Thabang Malatjie with the studs of his soccer boots up. Rotshidzwa Muleka, Ex-press’s keeper, was also booked for wasting time

towards the end of the fi rst half. No goal was seen during the fi rst half.

The hosts fortified their defence by introducing Thinavhuyo Mashau for Tha-nyani Netshipale early in the last half. The replacement was not good enough to stop the visitors from Tzaneen from opening their account in the 57th minute.

They were awarded a free kick just outside the box after Lucky Lebea was

tackled from behind. The referee, Mr Roy

Mulaudzi, fl ashed another yellow card, this time to

Vincent Hlungwani of Blue

Rocks, in the 64th minute. He handled the ball intentionally. Joe’s Express effected another change to their starting lineup. They sacrifi ced their vastly experienced striker, Edwin “Cafu” Ramphabana, for Nndateni “Chilly” Netshitadi. Blue Rocks increased the margin through Letsoalo Magoro. He beat the offside trap and blast-ed in a rocket from the edge of the box.

At that stage, the keeper of Express, Rotshidzwa Muleka, was already out of the penalty area in a bid to save the situ-ation. Alpheus Ramolepo of Blue Rocks was booked for ignoring the referee’s whistle shortly before full time.

Rotshidzwa Muleka, Ex-press’s keeper, was also booked for wasting time

outside the box after Lucky Lebea was tackled from behind.
