Mr Ndivhuwo Gundula points to where the mob of 11 people started beating Vhonani Sibara for allegedly stealing a phone.

Vhonani Sibara (22) from Tshi-vhilwi-Tshifhungwi village was brutally attacked and killed last Monday. He was allegedly at-tacked by 12 members of the local community policing forum (CPF). The members of the CPF accosted him after he was accused of steal-ing his neighbour’s mobile phone.

From what could be established, the CPF members initially forced him to return the phone to the owner. After he had returned the phone to its rightful owner, members of CPF allegedly tied his hands and legs and started beating him.

This started at the gate of his home and continued to the head-man’s kraal. Apparently the rightful owner insisted that they should leave him alone since he had returned his phone. The group stubbornly resist-ed and claimed that they wanted to teach him a lesson.

An eyewitness, who is also a rel-ative of the deceased, Mr Ndivhuwo

Gundula, said the group started beating and kicking him at the gate of his home. “His clothes were torn and he was screaming out loud and complaining that they were killing him, but they continued,” he said. He said women were screaming and calling for the group to stop beating him, but they continued.

Vhonani’s young brother, Thina Gundula, said when he arrived at home during the night he found them attacking him. “That was cruelty of the worst kind. Those people were many and I could not do anything to help and they were claiming that they were correcting him,” he said.

His family learnt about his death when the police visited them last Tuesday morning. “When I arrived at home late on Monday night, I did not fi nd him and I did not ask as he used to come back home,” said his father, Mr Nthumeni Gundula. (Cont. on p2)

The Soutpansberg Mountain is not your typical African environment of savannah, but it does offer a unique wilderness filled with an incredible variety of animal species hidden in its shadows.

Speaking during a Nature Night Conference that was held on Thurs-day, 20 February, at the Schoemans-dal Environmental Education Centre (ECC) were some of the region's key environmental researchers and academics.

Three key note speakers gave the latest news, comments and analyses on their research of the Soutpansberg. Animals discussed were the leopard, Samango monkey and Cape vulture - all important for a balanced environment.

Leading the discussions was husband-and-wife team Dr Sam and Katy Williams. They are currently coordinating the Pri-mate and Predator Project and a volunteer programme on behalf of Durham University at the Lajuma Research Centre that is situated in the Soutpansberg mountains.

Sam's main interest is in the leopard, while Katy's focus is on the brown hyena. According to Sam, the Soutpansberg boasts the highest recorded density of leopards living on non-gov-ernment-protected land. Sadly, however, the leopard population has declined significantly in recent years.

His latest data reveals 7,7 leopards per 100km² in the western Soutpansberg, which is a steady decline from the 10,7 leopards that was counted during

2008. This is one of the many reasons why leopards have been classified as nearly endangered on the Red Data List.

Sam is currently continuing with his research and relies heavily on public input.

Second was Mrs Bibi Linden, known for co-founding the Samango Monkey Working Group. She spoke about the monkey's population distri-bution in the Soutpansberg and how they can be conserved. The Samango, too, has been classified as vulnerable.

Linden has been assessing the distribution and populations status

of Samangoes for the past couple of years, documenting the differences between the Soutpansberg Saman-goes and those found in other parts of Southern Africa. She is also relying heavily on public participation for her research.

Concluding the nature night was David Pretorius, who spoke about Cape vulture conservation. David, who is currently working for the Limpopo Department of Education, is well known in the area for his work with the Vulture Project at Blouberg Nature Conservation.

The vulture is currently facing

more treats than the leopard or the Samangoes as it is killed for muti purposes and is an unwelcome guest for the farmer.

Pretorius said, however, that there are those farmers who are adapting their farming techniques to be more vulture friendly.

“Conservation is crucial for the Soutpansberg people, and we can all play a part,” said Sam and Katy.

For more information, the Lajuma Research Centre can be contacted at Tel 082 875 9482 or 083 308 7027. Katy can also be contacted via email at [email protected].

From page 1It is also alleged that members

of the group were intoxicated when they beat the young man. It is said in the village that the

group had chased all the Zimba-bweans out of the area, claiming that they (the group) were main-taining the peace and curbing crime in the area. Apparently,

some of the people were also admitted to hospital after alleg-edly being attacked by members of the group.

Vhonani is survived by his spouse, Ms Nkhumeleni Mailangombe, two chil-dren, his parents and his siblings. He was laid to rest at the village's cem-etery on Sunday.

The police confirmed the arrest of 11 peo-ple but could not con-firm whether they were members of the CPF. "They were remanded in custody until their next appearance," said Thohoyandou police spokesperson Constable Avhafarei Tshiovhe.

O n W e d n e s d a y (March 5) at the time of our going to press, the suspects were still to appear in the Thohoyan-dou Magistrate's Court.

The Louis Trichardt SPCA have urged members of the public to stop dropping off their rubbish bags at the ken-nels along the Vondeling road as part of organisation's recy-cling initiative.

“It would seem that many peo-ple do not know how recycling works,” said Mrs Bea Reimer of the SPCA.

What had happened was that many people merely started dropping off their rubbish bags without sorting out the recyclable items first. This in itself caused a major health risk as the rubbish

bags started piling up.“Because of this, we will not

continue with our recycling ini-tiative,” said Reimer.

Books and magazines, as well as jumble (clothes, shoes, toys, kitchen utensils, ornaments and any other jumble) are, however, still welcome with regard to the SPCA’s frequent jumble and book sales.

These goods can s t i l l be dropped of f at the kennels between 08:00 and 16:00.

For those wishing to make a financial donation, the local SP-CA’s banking details are SPCA Louis Trichardt, Standard Bank, account number 282374639 and branch code 052 549.

For more information, phone Reimer at 082 424 5712, Law-rence Khodobo at 082 965 5151 or the kennels at 015 516 0427.

Nature night highlights research and conservation in mountains

The circuit manager of Soutpansberg West, Ms Christina Ramovha, bids farewell to Mr Edward Mbadaliga, while Ms Magret Buasi is greeted by Principal Patricia Ramango.

Community members, teach-ers and members of the South African Democratic Teach-ers’ Union (Sadtu) gathered at Ravele last Friday to bid farewell to two teachers, Mr Edward Mbadaliga and Mrs Magret Buasi, who retired at Magovhani Primary School.

They retired after 40 and 36 years’ unbroken service in the teaching profession respec-tively.

Buasi started worked at Ma-govhani Primary School in 1974, where she worked until last month.

Mbadaliga started his career in 1978 at Madombidzha Pri-mary, and he was transferred to Maguluvhe Primary in 1979 before he went Muila, Tshivhu-lani and Magovhani.

The secretary of the Sinthu-mule/Kutama Sadtu branch, Mr Livhuwani Mashau, praised the two teachers for being hard workers and committed teach-ers. He said that their contribu-tion in the struggle for quality public education would always be remembered.

"Everyone can see that the two were great soldiers in the teaching profession, and I hope the young teachers will pick up from where they left off. We wish them more health and a deserved rest after such hard work,” said Mashau. The prin-cipal of the school, Ms Patricia Ramango, described Mbadaliga and Buasi as hardworking, dedicated and visionary leaders who played a meaningful role in the development of education.

"They were always cooperative, readily available and carried out instructions professionally. As disciplined educators, they worked hard without constant supervision. Teaching was not just a career, but a way of life."

Buasi said she had succeed-ed over the 40 years through her spirit of cooperation with different stakeholders. "I have finally arrived here because of the support from the Depart-ment of Education, community members, fellow educators and friends. We can only suc-ceed through hard work, unity and dedication. The simplest way of managing a prosperous school is to cooperate with the teachers, parents and traditional leaders. Thanks, everyone who contributed to my success.”

Man (32) stabbed to death at tavernThe Vuwani police are inves-tigating a case of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, after a man was stabbed to death and his spouse severely injured at a local tavern at Mugomeli-Tshi-fulanani on Sunday night.

According to Ms Maria Sivha-ga (30), the incident occurred at the Mugomeli Restaurant, which is in fact a mixture of a shop and a tavern, at around 22:30.

Sivhaga visited the tavern with her spouse, Mr Maluta Elvis Netshivhumbe (32), so that he could buy something with her R200 bank note and give her the change. “I went with him to the back of the building and we saw there were people gambling with cards a short distance away,” Sivhaga wept as she talked. “The moment the three men saw me handing Elvis the money, they rushed towards us and attacked

us with knives.” Sivhaga was stabbed in the left hand and right knee. Netshivhumbe tried to run away, but the attackers cornered him in a nearby mealie field and stabbed him to death. “All the other people who were around us ran away for fear of also being attacked,” said Sivhaga. “I ran to the front door for help, but the people inside the tavern quickly shut me out.” The thugs then forcefully took Sivhaga and Netshivhumbe’s mobile phones.

All three suspects are said to have come from a nearby village to drink at Mugomeli. According to community members, who spoke on condition of anonym-ity, a local man was seen in the company of the three suspects.

“We supplied the police with helpful information regarding the local man, but he had since fled the village,” said the local traditional leader, Vhavenda Vho-Rathogwa Ramavhulela. “He should just come back and help identify the suspects. We are not saying he did anything wrong.” The deceased’s mother, Ms Flora Munyai, condemned the attitude of Mugomeli tavern’s managers, who shut the security doors in Sivhaga’s face when she rushed to them for help. “They didn’t even call the police or ambulance,” she said. “All that they care about is money. That tavern must be closed down.”

Munna Ndi Nnyi’s director, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, con-demned the incident and said

that the police and other related stakeholders had formed a project against crime, called the Lupenyo Project, last year. “This was after the SAPS agreed that there is a high rate of crimes in this area,” Mufunwaini said. “But the police have been doing nothing to take the project forward.”

Limpopo Media Centre’s com-munications officer, Const Tsiet-si Lamola, confirmed the incident and said that three suspects had finally been arrested on Monday. “A 32-year-old man was stabbed to death with a bottle while at a liquor outlet,” said Lamola. “However, the suspects will appear in court soon.” “Anyone with information pertaining to this case is welcome to assist in terms of police investigations.”

Netshivhumbe is survived by his two children, Surprise (9) and Zelda (2), his spouse and mother. Mourning: Ms Maria Sivhaga lost her husband.

Community members Mr Tuwani Gelebe and Mr Eric Ratombo inspect the spot where Netshivhumbe was stabbed to death.

The Vhembe District Municipality has cracked the whip at the un-derperforming Movhe Secondary School.

During her visit to the school at Mulenzhe village outside Thohoyan-dou on Tuesday, Cllr Dorcus Mmboi commended the school principal, Mr Masenyane Mabasa, for helping to improve the matric results at the school since he came in three years back.

Since Mabasa was appointed, the school's results increased from 24% in 2011 to 41, 37% in 2012 and 42,85 last year. In 2012, the school had 29 pupils who wrote matric. Only 12 of them have passed.

In her address to the school man-agement and SGB, Mmboi said she was disappointed that the school did not perform up to standard. She appealed to the resentative of the Department of Education in Vhembe, the SGB and traditional leaders to sit down and find out what might be the challenges facing the school.

“For this school to improve its results, we must first find out what might be the problems it is facing, so that we can attend to them in order to get good results.

We can’t blame the principal for the underperformance of this school. For this school to succeed, it needs team work," she added.

Milige Secondary school honoured its top achievers of 2013 and also honoured the top learner in the Soutpansberg west circuit, Musi-wa Sikhau, at a ceremony at True Worshippers Christian Centre last Friday.

Learners were awarded trophies, certificates and cash prizes in recogni-tion of their outstanding performance and hard work shown in 2013. Sikhau obtained seven distinctions and, for his hard work, he received a trophy, a laptop computer and R1 500.

The top Grade 11 learner, Tumelo

Majoko, went home with R750 and a trophy.

Ndivhuwo Seoka was the best Grade10 pupil last year, while Rinae Maligavhada and Mahlatsi Mapheba finished in first place in Grade 9 and 8 respectively.

The school principal, Mr Thomas Netshifhefhe, said the awards were meant to encourage learners and teachers to work hard for the purpose of improving education.

Top learner Musiwa Sikhau will continue with his studies at the Uni-versity of Witwatersrand.

Masakona farm workers continue with their strikeThe worker strike at the Masokona community-owned farm escalated this week and it seems as if negotiations between the workers and the farm man-agement had reached a deadlock. Last Thursday, workers marched to the farm head office, wearing red attire, in the presence of a delegation from the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU).

Workers were marching while holding placards, some of them stating: ‘We de-mand protective clothes’ and ‘What about the 100% annual bonus, the 13th cheque?’ They were demanding nine working hours per day, a wage increment from R85 to R105, protective clothes whilst they are spraying chemicals and also that security guards be paid when they work dur-ing holidays and over weekends.

The negotiations be-tween FAWU and the management in the four-hour-long meeting, held behind closed doors, did not produce any good results. Only the problems the security guards were experienc-ing were addressed, but the working hours and wage increment were not resolved.

The management and the union settled the dispute involving the security guards and they agreed to scrap security guards and absorb them into the farm's workforce. The union, however, insisted that the farm should not hire any private security compa-ny to guard the farm. “They have agreed to pay the guards a three-month-outstanding amount and absorb those guards to work at the farm,” said FAWU shop steward Mr Gabriel Masakona.

Some damaging allegations also sur-faced last week. The farm management was accused of allowing workers to spray

chemicals on plants without wearing pro-tective clothing. “Some of our colleagues are at home, their feet are rotting so se-verely,” said another worker, who asked not to be named.

Even though the workers were paid their February salaries, they refused to return to work until the management had approved the nine-hour working day.

Limpopo Mirror attempted to get comment from members of the CPA, but could not reach any of them. None of their phones was functioning at the time of our going to press.

During the fevent are, from left to right, Cllr Carol Phiri (mayor of the Musina Municipality), Min Nathi Mthethwa, General Kbhehla Sitole and Commissioner Fanie Masemola.

“No future for lazy and corrupt officers in SAPS”Alarmed by the rise in criminal ac-tivities in the Musina policing area, the Minister of Safety and Security, Mr Nathi Mthethwa, discussed the situation with local communities at the Musina-Matswale sports grounds last Friday.

Numerous questions were asked in relation to crime and cases. Mthethwa acknowledged the dedicated and hard-working police officers who are doing their best to combat crime but lashed out at those who tarnish the image of the po-lice services by involving themselves in criminal activities. “We have dedicated men and women in the police services who serve the community wholehearted-ly, and we commend them for that. Those who are collaborating with criminals must know that their days in the police services are numbered.”

He says everyone deserves to live in peace and comfort and the community should never allow themselves to be terrorised by criminals. “Criminals have no room in our community and it is our joint effort to make sure that they are locked behind bars. It is our collective responsibility to make sure that we turn our habitat into a crime-free zone.”

He also emphasised that “lazy and cor-rupt police officers have no future in the South African Police Services. I want to appeal to all community members to for-get their petty differences and join hands in the noble fight against crime. Crime prevention is not the responsibility of the police alone, therefore the communities should be involved,” he said.

He also encouraged the people to take part in community policing to strengthen the relationship between the police and

the community, which is a critical factor in success against crime. “Let us join hands and declare Musina a crime-free area,” he said.

The chairperson of the Musina com-munity forum, Mr Mashudu Ndou, said they were as worried as police about the drastic rise in crimes such as rape, theft and the smuggling of illegal cigarettes in the area. "The crime rate in our area is unacceptably high. We cannot allow our area to be ruled by criminals, and we know that, as the community alone, we can’t beat crime and we need the police to assist us,” Ndou said.

Ms Winnie Ramakokovhu said she had gained a lot from the meeting. “What happened today is a clear sign that the department is determined to root out crime. We wish this is done at regular intervals,” she said

Legendary sculptor is still blowing his own khwathaDisabled artist hopes to soon release his new album It is around 06:00 in the mountainous

village. A middle-height, dark-skinned man climbs onto the wall and blows his khwatha, a traditional horn. The soft, melodious sound of his khwatha fills the air around his home.

“The first thing I do when I open my eyes in the morning is to pick up my khwatha, stand in the open and blow it,” he explains. “This is how I thank my ancestors for the gift of life.”

In his small village of Shanzha in Nzhelele, the 76-year-old Ratshilumela Samson Mudzunga is an eccentric old man who spends his days alone at his home. “People do not understand that an artist prefers his own company when engaged in a serious project,” he says. Many pub-lications state that Mudzunga, who is one of the country’s foremost sculptors, gained international acclaim very late in his life when his sculptures received massive attention in the early 1990s.

“It was great. I mean, all the attention from local and international art curators who wanted to promote my work just after I had lost a job,” he remembers.

He previously worked as a gardener, messenger and driver between 1956 and 1989. “I was finally sacked from my work because the employers couldn’t accept the fact that I had started following my calling as an artist,” he says. “Being sacked from work was a blessing in disguise. After losing my job, I focused solely on my art.” By 1996, Mudzunga’s work had evolved as he too gained maturity as a sculptor who mainly specialised in large-scale, tra-ditional Venda drums, known as ngoma.

He elucidates the meaning of the tradi-tional drum: “Ngoma means many things in VhaVenda. It symbolises peace, human-ity, harmony and a sense of belonging.”

However, his drums are totally unique and different from the others in his culture as he adds minwenda fabric to his drums, and makes his drums in the shapes of large, hollow fish and aeroplanes.

“I also perform the ‘funeral ritual’ and ‘rebirth or resurrection’, using ngoma,” he tells.

His home used to be a hubbub of artists, art fanatics and curious people who visited him and bought some of his creations.

“Some of these people came from Eu-rope, and they all showed respect and interest in my work,” he says. “These people no longer come because there are locals who spread a rumour that I am a witch.”

Mudzunga the artist spends his days at his home, carving and drink-ing water from a nearby spring. Any interested bodies are wel-come to pay him a visit.

Surprisingly, he is not clear on how his work is being traded internationally, because curators hardly provide him with the nec-essary informa-tion. “I hope to fix this confusion

soon,” he says.He has so far been published in count-

less papers and publications, and is regarded as an interesting, stimulating subject of study by many art students across the globe.

Anitra Nettleton, writing in Art South Africa, said this of the artist: “Mudzunga’s art has not been confined to the making of the objects, which are central to his ‘performances’, but is also evident in his manipulation of ‘traditions’ and political conflicts.”

Who says the fact that you are disabled means that you can’t do anything? A partially blind artist from Vhembe, who also suffers from a psychiatric illness, has proved to the nation that you can pursue your dreams, no matter what the circumstances are.

Mr Londani Takalani (39) of Dzimauli-Tshapasha outside Mutale is partially blind but has been mak-ing music on a keyboard since 2002.

His first gospel CD was called Rabela, which means pray to God. He said through this album he wanted to send a message out that nothing can surpass prayer.

He said his second CD was called A tshi vhuya Murena, meaning when Jesus Christ comes back to take us. This album was recorded in 2008.

“I was encouraged by my local pastor of the Dzimauli-Tshibu-

mo Faith Mission Church, Pastor P h u l u w a , w h o always said that my love of sing-ing gospel music would bring me fame. I personally love to sing gospel songs because they inspire me to praise God for the won-derful things he has done for me,” said Takalani.

“I want to record another CD and get better musical instruments like big drums, but I don’t have enough money,” he said. Anyone who wants to help the disabled gospel artist to re-alize his dreams can phone him at 082 262 0142. Samson Mudzunga is known internationally for his large-

scale fish drums.

House set alight in chieftainship battleTwo people were arrested on Friday on charges of arson, fol-lowing a fire that broke out at a house belonging to headman Reckson Hasani Makhubele in Siyandhani village outside Giyani.

According to police spokes-person W/O Thomas Makhubele, the two suspects, aged between 18 and 27 years old, will soon appear in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court.

The incident followed a week of demonstrations by a section of the community. The unhappy villagers demanded that two of the headmen leave the area, ac-cusing them of selling out their headman, Famadha Chavalala (Siyandhani), to Chief Penny Ngove.

The matter started in around 2007 when a multi-million-rand

community project at Siyandhani Village was suspended, follow-ing to a dispute between the chief and his headman, Famandha Chabalala.

The construction of the com-munity centre, which was sup-posed to house a clinic, offices for the Department of Home Affairs and the tribal authority´s offices in the heart of the rural community, was meant to bring services closer to the people.

It is said that the Mabunda Tribal Authority, under the lead-ership of Penny Ngove, objected to the construction of the project in 2007, claiming that headman Famanda Siyandhani Chavalala had not consulted or informed them about the project.

The community had received settlement claims of more than R10 million under the leadership

of headman Siyandhani from the Land Claims Commission and opted for community offices.

Former deputy minister Them-belani Nxesi had tried to mediate between the two parties, but it seems that the matter was not solved and the project came to a halt.

One of the headmen, Reckson Hasani Makhubele, said he was shocked to see his people come and set fire to his house.

“There is a war over the chief-taincy and some people are using our own people and turning them against us by giving them wrong information” said Makhubele

The Limpopo House of Tra-ditional Leaders’ spokesperson, Eric Mdabula, appealed to people not to use violence but to follow the proper channels when resolv-ing disputes.

Headman Reckson Hasani Makhubele shows the damage to his property.

Region’s own hip-hop artists make inroads on national stagesA local hip-hop group that adds a unique Tshivenda flavour to this music genre is mak-ing inroads into the national scene. The group, TooFab, has eight talented artists who have been performing at various venues throughout the country.

The manager of TooFab, Israel Mureri, said they had performed as far as Cape Town, with fans turning up in large numbers to watch their stage performances. “We have also been to Pretoria, Mpumalanga (Nelspruit), and Johannesburg in Park Town, Baseline and Hillbrow,” he said.

Even though it is tough for upcoming artists to establish themselves, this has not been the case with these youngsters. Their collaboration has helped them to expand their network and to uplift one another. “We always strive to help each other and, at the end of the day, it makes things easier for any member of the group to produce an album and claim prominence out there,” said Mureri.

The team’s hard work, creativity and their ability to produce good-quality music have yielded good results. On 17 March, some of the group members will be in-terviewed on eTV’s morning news show, Sunrise. They will also showcase some of their music.

TooFab was formed late in 2010 by Mbavhalelo Radebe (Fizzy) with his friends, Muneiwa Mukhwantheli (SK) and Mulanga Ralioma (Cashflow). This was when Tshivenda hip-hop music was gaining popularity in the Vhembe region. “Ini-tially, I did not know how it would go, but I took the risk and now, within a few years, we are reaping the

rewards. Who would have thought that this type of Tshivenda music would be listened to in most regions of the country?” said Fizzy.

Despite having performed for only three years, some of the group members have already won awards. Late last year, Thendo Tshipota, best known by his stage name “Floydbest”, triumphed at the Pretoria music awards. He won the 2013 Pretoria Best Rap Artist of the Year award.

While the group members were still celebrating the success of Floydbest, Phuluso Tshivhase, wide-ly known by his Rap name of C-Jay, stepped into the limelight after winning an award at the second Tshivenda annual Music Awards (Tshima). C-jay’s single, entitled ‘Toti’, earned him huge respect in the Tshivenda hip-hop music fraternity.

“I felt special; the group has uplifted me. We improve every day and everywhere we have been performing, people are be asking for our albums,”

he said.C-jay stated that he would share 40% of the

money he won at the Tshima with the churches in his home village, Fondwe. “The churches will identify needy pupils and buy them school shoes, or assist deserving learners with other needs, especial-ly those whose parents are unemployed,” he said.

C-Jay is currently recording his debut album, titled Holy Hustle. The album will complement his award-winning single and he is going to launch it in April this year.

Thimangado Muofhe (Diva T), one of the group’s ladies, said it was a great experience working with the team and it was very rewarding. “Our purpose is to empower young people,” she said. Some of the crew members include Eu-lender Nekhavhambe (MissyFab) and Fulufhelo Mukhwantheli (Visious).

Pall bearers carry the remains of Mamushiane to her final resting place.

Portia Mamushiane, who was buried three weeks after her death.

Last of the bus accident victims finally laid to restFor three weeks the body of a young woman lay waiting in the mortuary fridge without anyone recognising her face or claiming her as their kin. She was one of the 10 people killed in a horrific acci-dent near Thohoyandou. While the remains of all the others had been claimed, her identity remained a mystery.

Portia Mamushiane (26) of Tshamavhudzi outside Thohoyan-dou was the last of the bus accident victims who had been identified and she was eventually buried during an emotional service at the local ceme-tery over the weekend. Her shocked family later explained that they had become used to the late Portia's wayward ways and were initially not bothered when she did not return home. It was quite a shock for them when someone suggested last week that they go and look for her in the mortuary.

Her funeral drew people and stake-holders from far and wide, including representatives from the government, the Vhembe Bus Operators Associa-tion, councillors and local commu-

nity members. The funeral was held jointly by the Road Accident Fund, the government and the Vhembe Bus Operators Association.

The funeral was emotional and many shed a tear during the service. Close relatives wept openly and had to be comforted.

Mamushiane, the mother of three, and nine others died three weeks ago when a travelling bus from the direction of Malamulele allegedly veered off course and collided head-on with a taxi full of shoppers from Thohoyandou. Eleven people were also injured in the accident. The dead and injured were from the villages of Basani, Tshikonelo, Shikundu and Muraga.

The other victims are Mr Robert Mapango (53) of Tshikonelo, Ms Vi-olet Ndonyane (62) of Basani, Joyce Masango (39), Ms Lucy Nethengwe of Muraga, Ms Constance Randima (41), Yvonne Shivambu (27) of Basani, Ms Anna Siphuma (69) and Rose Sithole (49). They were buried at different villages a fortnight ago.

Speaking during the funeral, the lo-cal traditional leader, Chief Rudzani

Nemalamangwa, urged families to look after each other. “We are all saddened by the death of this young woman, but there is one thing that makes me sadder and I will say it here in front of the peo-ple. The family did not do things correctly. How can they keep quiet when one family member is missing, especially after the fatal accident which shocked the whole country? Let us do things right by looking after one another,” he said.

Representing the mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Mulalo Rammela said they were still shocked about the spate of deadly accidents plaguing the province. “We are here to give you support, to show you that you are not alone in these difficult times and to show that we are a caring government which will be with you all the time,” she said.

A family representa-tive, Phineas Mamush-iana, said the family were humbled by the support they received. "While we were still in a state of confusion, many of you came and comforted us. Had it not been for your support, we would not have been able to bury our loved one in this fashion, " he said.

This man never gives up easily. In the year 2000, his debut

album, Yesu Ndi Mulisa, was pi-rated before the actual recording could be completed. His master tapes and demo were stolen while recording and his music ended up being sold without his permission.

That, however, did not deter Evangelist Hendrick Vele, who continued producing more music.

Vele (50) of Dzimauli Mu-kondeni at Ha Rammbuda, has put all that behind him and has

just released a very powerful single, Thutha I Gai Baba. The single, which is now selling very well around Vhembe, was recorded in December 2013 and was released on New Year's Day.

Vele, a pastor at the Come and Worship Jesus Church at Luheni, said that what had happened to his first album had made him lose hope of ever recording an album. “I worked very hard to produce music for my first album, and when all was being put in place, a very respectable musician and

engineer from this area stole my music and sold it without my permission.

I do not want to talk about it now, and I have forgiven him,” said Vele.

He said that attending the launch of the TSHIMA awards last year changed him completely and gave him the energy to record again, which is why the new single came into being.

“After all the tribulations and setbacks, I asked God to give me the wisdom and the power

to come out with some-thing powerful for my listeners. I can assure you that the single is the answer to my prayers. It is very powerful and the reception has been overwhelming since its release. Orders are on the increase day by day,” he said.

The multi-talented musician said he did the instrumentals and vocals on the single. “More is still to come. I have produced a lot of music through the years and I have enough material that could fill an album, but I am taking it one step at a time,” he said.

Vele’s music is avail-able at Mashapha Build-ing and is also self-mar-keted. Those finding it difficult to get copies can contact him at 076 813 4599.

Never-say-die Evangelist releases album

The incomplete Mpheni clinic.

The Mpheni clinic, on which construction started in 2010, has still not been completed.

Residents of Mpheni and sur-rounding areas are visibly upset with the lack of progress. The project was supposed to have been completed in 2011. It was then extended for a further four months, but two years later, not much has changed.

A community member, Mr Jackson Musingadi, says at the end of last year they had tried everything they could to have the department finish the con-struction, but in vain. He said they had written several letters and held countless meetings

with parents and departmental officials, but nothing fruitful had come out of these. "We were told that the department had terminated the contract with the contractor because of under-performance, but the contractor claims that the government did not give him enough funds and that is why he abandoned the building."

The department said no one was willing to take up the tender to finish the clinic because the remaining job was too small and contractors said there was nothing to gain from that par-ticular tender.

"The department once prom-

ised us that workers from Public Works would come and finish up the building, but they have never fulfilled their promises," said Musingadi.

The spokesperson for the De-partment of Health, Adele van der Linde, said the department was aware of the problem at the Mpheni clinic.

She said the issue had been discussed at several meetings and the department was doing its best to have the building finished.

“We have put Mpheni clinic on our priority list for projects that need urgent infrastructure attention,” she said.

Number of robberies increase in NzheleleIncidents of housebreaking and commercial robbery are on the rise in Nzhelele. Since the beginning of February, the police have already recorded more than 10 cases of similar crimes.

Residents from Dzanani township, Tshirol-we, Tshituni-Tshantha, Ha-Matidza, Ha-Rabali, Ha-Matsa and Tshikuwi have become victims of crime. Meanwhile, the Mpephu police have only apprehended two suspects. The police are warning communities to be vigilant and to always lock their houses and alert their neighbours when they are not around. Shop owners are also warned to be cautious when conducting their businesses and to avoid closing late in the evening.

It is believed that the culprits have targeted property such as phones, DVD sets, flat-screen television sets and laptops. “We are appealing to any member of the community who might have information to contact our police station urgently,” said Mphephu police spokesperson W/O Lazarus Netshidzati.

Those who have the notion that big movie production compa-nies are only found in the cities are in for a big surprise. Deep down in rural Venda, at Mphe-go outside Thohoyandou to be precise, a team comprising youths from the area are creat-ing and shooting very creative and informative movies and dramas.

Fireman Productions was started in 2009. Production di-rector Rudzani Masevhe (23) of Mphego said they had been watching films, movies and dra-mas for a long time and wondered

as to how they were made. “In 2009, a few friends and I came up with a concept for a movie, Tenda Ha Liwa, which we shot using cell phones. The movie did not live up to expectations and was only viewed in the village. This did not discourage us, and when a local businessman bought us a small video camera, it motivated us to up our game start again. This gave birth to a movie, Sed-zazwau, which we shot in 2013. It did very well and we managed to sell nearly 400 copies of the movie,” said Masevhe.

He said this movie had en-

trenched them as one of the best up-and-coming production hous-es in the area. “We are greatly encouraged and we know what we are doing. We are now busy shooting a drama series, Vhu-hovheleli, which we hope will attract the notice of the SABC. It is about a man who gets an inher-itance from his father and, after getting the money, he forsakes his wife and family and starts splashing his money on alcohol and girlfriends. When the money is finished, he goes back to the family and asks for forgiveness, which he is given. We are trying to enlighten the nation on how they should conduct themselves when they have money,” he said.

According to Masevhe, many widows are left penniless, but even when they are left some money, they use it the wrong way. “Many lose their money in a short space of time and we are trying to educate such people,” said Masevhe.

“We only have a small video camera and lights which are not always adequate, but we are do-ing our best to produce a quality product, and we just hope that our latest drama series will be well received when released. In a few years’ time, we would like to see ourselves producing many stories and dramas for the SABC and other TV channels,” added Masevhe. The crew and the cast during the shooting of the drama

Young victims of fire laid to rest

“I’m selling my magical drum”

Laid to rest: Konanani Mulovhedzi (7).

Laid to rest: Thanyani Ndou (13).

The two children who died in a shack fire a fortnight ago were laid

to rest during an emo-tionally charged funer-al service at Tsha lovha cemetery in Khumbe village on Saturday.

Thanyani Ndou (13) and Konanani Mu-lovhedzi (7) burnt to death while they were sleeping inside the shack of Thanyani’s mother on the night of 21 February. The two children were attached to the Munna Ndi Nnyi project as chil-dren from vulnerable backgrounds.

The two minors were alone inside the shack when the fire broke out.

During the burial ser-vice, Thulamela Mu-nicipality’s mayor, Cllr Grace Mahosi, urged mothers and guardians to not leave children unattended while they go away. “As a munici-pality that cares for peo-ple’s welfare, we don’t wish to see incidents of this nature happen-ing again in our area,” Mahosi said tearfully. “Two beautiful kids lost their lives. Parents must

always keep a watchful eye on children.”

The dead children’s parents, Ms Pinky Ndou (28) and Ms Joyce Mu-lovhedzi (40), wept bit-terly when the coffins were lowered into the graves.

“My daughter, my daughter...” Ndou was heard weeping.

The pupils and ed-ucators from the two primary schools which the deceased attended also came to the funeral to bury their loved ones.

The director of Mun-na Ndi Nnyi, Mr Bard-well Mufunwaini, said that a mother must dis-play tender care similar to that of a hen.

“The hen protects her chicks, so that the vul-ture won’t steal away any of them,” Mufun-waini said.

Thanyani was in Grade 7 at Muthule Pri-mary School, while Ko-nanani was doing Grade 2 at Tshikovhokovho Primary School.

The internationally acclaimed artist and sculptor, Samson Mud-zunga, has dropped a bombshell. The 66-year-old artist from of Dopeni in Vhembe is about to sell his world-famous fish drum.

Mudzunga is known for his mystic sculptures and spiritually charged performances the world over. He stated this week that, for economic reasons, he is putting his coveted piece of art on the market. The drum, however, which has been exhibited for over ten years in- and outside the country, is not going for peanuts. A potential buyer will have to fork out R2 million for it.

“There are people who are using me to enrich themselves. For more than 10 years these people have made lots of money while I, the owner of the work, got nothing. After giving the drum a lot of thought, I decided it was time for me to sell it,” he said.

Mudzanga said that he hoped a buyer would come forth.

“I will be happy knowing that at

least something has been paid that could sustain me for some time,” he said.

Mudzunga could not point out who was making money out of his drum, but sources have pointed out that the drum has been overseas for years and locally under the control of agents. He said that the drum was very close to his heart as he could communicate with his ancestors through the same drum.

In 1996, Mudzunga shocked the world and irritated local traditional leaders when he conducted a mock funeral of himself in the mystic fish drum. This was followed by another exhibition in 2000 of the same nature.

This uncompromising artist has also earned the wrath of local tradi-tional leaders over Lake Fundudzi. In some instances the cases ended up in court.

“I am very close to Lake Fundudzi. I gain my powers from this lake and I also communicate with my ancestors through dreams,” said Mudzunga.Angry artist Samson Mudzunga says there are people cashing in using his drum while he is getting nothing.

Dzondzo circuit recognises top achievers

De Beers and Armoury have donated R10 500 to Eric Louw High School in Musina. Ar-moury is a London-based company that specializes in fi lm production.

The funds are to be used to purchase teaching technology, including data projectors, after London director Jack Laurance and his fi lm crew recently uti-

lized Eric Louw High School as one of the locations for the De Beers Brand Film.

The film is due to be re-leased at the De Beers Senior Leadership Conference (SLC) in Singapore next month. The classroom scene is a nod to De Beers’ focus on education as the foundation for development and features the students eagerly

raising their hands in answer to a question.

In addition, the school’s rug-by fi eld was utilized as the lo-cation for an engagement scene between Cape Town models Wade Cowan and Kyla Close, who later shared their “first dance” at the Venetia Guest-house. The fi lm crew and their voluminous cameras, smoke

The Vhumbedzi circuit man-ager, Mr Livhuwani Phophi, has warned Grade 12 pupils in Dzondo circuit to be careful when choosing their friends. Mr Phophi was motivating the pupils during the Dzondo circuit excellence awards held at Calvary Christian church in Lwamondo last Friday (Feb-ruary 28).

Mr Phophi told the pupils that their choice of friends was very

important as it could serve as motivation to work harder. He said the way to pass Grade 12 exceptionally well was to have dreams and focus on achieving them.

“Achieving great success means a lot of sacrifi ce. Be loyal to the school regulations and dream every day. For you to suc-ceed, you must fi nish everything you do like a professional,” he told pupils.

During the excellence awards, teachers and pupils who had performed exceptionally well last year were awarded certifi -cates and trophies. Lwamondo Secondary received top hon-ours, with a pass rate of 95.8%, whilst Nndamuleleni Second-ary acquired position two and Tshiemuemu ended third in the circuit. Dzondo Circuit acquired a 89.1% pass rate in last year’s Grade 12 results.

When asked about the donat ion, the school’s head of de-partment for market-ing and communi-cation, Rina Fourie, commented “We are extremely grateful for this very generous donation. De Beers has been a commit-ted benefactor to our school for many years now, and we value both their financial support and initiatives such as this one, which expose our students to respected international professionals and po-tential career paths.”

Entries are open for the 25th Kremetart one-day, four-stage cycling race, sponsored by PPC.

The PPC Kremetart Stage Race turns 25 this year and calls on all competitive cyclists and enthusiasts to participate in the race, which takes place on 7 June.

This year marks the 10th year that PPC has been involved in its sponsorship and the third year that they are the main sponsors of the race.

The Kremetart Cycling Race attracts cyclists from all over the country and over 10 000 visitors are hosted in the region. This provides a financial injection of more than R20 million towards the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) area, in accommodation, enter-tainment and other operating expenditure.

The weekend is geared to-wards the whole family, with activities for cyclists of different ages and fitness levels. Friday (6 June) late afternoon will kick

off with a 10km mountain-bike fun ride. On Saturday, the main attraction will be the famous one-day, four-stage race, as well as a 70km road race. For the more adventurous, there is a moun-tain-bike cross-country olympic race with scenic routes through the Soutspansberg Mountain, to be held on Sunday (8 June).

PPC’s customer executive: cement sales and marketing, Richard Tomes, says that PPC is delighted to sponsor this event as it offers amateur cyclists an opportunity to ride with profes-sionals and, at the same time, experience the beautiful Sout-pansberg region.

“It is a serious race, but also a time for families to spend time together and enjoy the great outdoors,” he said.

The first Kremetart Race was held in 1990, with only 50 cy-clists. The popularity of the race has grown annually and contin-ues to do so. The organisers set a limit of 2 000 entries in order to

provide an enjoyable and quality experience.

“This is the third year that PPC and Kremetart Cycling are join-ing forces to present the biggest cycling event in the Limpopo Province.

We are privileged to have PPC as our main sponsor as they are committed to promoting cycling, not only in our province, but countrywide. With the ongoing partnership with PPC, this race is known as one of the best-or-ganised races in South Africa. As this is the 25th year of the Kremetart Cycle Race, we aim to make all participants’ and supporters’ cycling experiences something to remember,” says Renda Alexander, PPC Kreme-tart race organizer of the P&L Cycling Club of Louis Trichardt.

Kremetart is rated as one of the top three road races amongst cyclists in the country.

Beauty competition at MadombidzhaMadombidzha's glamorous ladies must draw a huge red circle around the date of 19 April on their calendars, as this is when Madombidzha Arse-nal FC will host their beauty competition. The competition coincides with a fundraiser, during which the club hopes to raise money to assist their

younger players. The club has also appealed to

local businesses, especially in the Makhado area, to sponsor the event.

Through the event the club hopes to recruit more young people in the area and get them committed to sport. This would help decrease crime in the area

since most young people will be spending their social time playing football rather than engaging in delinquent behaviour, which often leads to crime.

Anyone who is willing to sponsor the team can contact the team’s secretary and event organiser, Mr Trinity Tshivhula on 082 6688 887.

Rospa United teach Basel FC a lesson

Joe’s Express have reason to believe that they will collect the maximum league points in their SAFA Second Division League match against Lepha-lale Young Killers, whom they will host at the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

Joe’s Express are in winning mode after beating one of the close league title contenders, Bellevue Winners Park, 1-0 at the Nkowankowa Stadium last Saturday.

Joe’s Express will rely on their vastly experienced players,

Dakalo Ratshitanga and Edwin “Cafu” Ramphabana.

The match that is expected to pull the crowds will be between Rospa United and Ray Pillars at the University of Venda Stadium. Just like Joe’s Express, Rospa United are sharpened to kill after collecting full points last weekend. They brutally walloped Basel FC 4-1 at the Seshego Sta-dium in Polokwane. It remains to be seen whether the defence of Ray Pillars will have the power to stop Rospa’s fast forward, Kenneth “Mabena” Lesia.

Phungo All Stars will also play at home. They will host Bellevue Win-ners Park at the Makhado Elti-

villas grounds. Phungo All Stars have reason to panic as they are lying in the second-last position on the log.

The Mopani derby between Blue Rocks and Giyani Hotspurs will be staged at the Giyani Sta-dium. Blue Rocks are currently leading the pack, while Hotspurs are close behind in second place.

The Dolphins FC will entertain Modimolle Aces at the Seshego Stadium. Magezi FC will lock horns with Mosesetjane All Stars at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Mokopane. Sunday will see Great North FC battle for league points against Dynamos at the Seshego Stadium.

In the only match that will be played this evening, Mighty FC will play against Basel FC at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium.

Kenneth “Mabena” Lesia scored the opening goal for Rospa United.

Things are continuing to take shape in the camp of Rospa United Football Club. They are still celebrating last weekend's 4-1 victory over Basel FC.

The match was played at the Seshego Stadium on Sunday. Kenneth "Mabena" Lesia, Velile Mdaka and Samuel “Fire” Mo-hloa scored for United, while the fourth one was an own goal. Basel’s consolation goal came six minutes before half time via Khumbudzo Muvhango.

Joe’s Express have reason to celebrate. They came back with full points from their away fixture against one of the hot league title contenders, Bellevue Winners Park, whom they beat 1-0 at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tza-neen on Saturday. Dzivhuluwani Simba scored the all-important goal for Joe’s Express.

Lephalale Young Killers could not absorb the pressure from The Dolphins FC, who beat them 2-1 at the Mogol Stadium in Lephalale. In their equally con-tested game at the Nkowankowa Stadium on Saturday, Dynamos unexpectedly held Giyani Hot-spurs to a 3-3 draw.

Blue Rocks continued to pave their way up the log by beating Mighty FC 2-0 at the Nkowanko-wa Stadium in Tzaneen on Sun-day.

Blue Rocks scored their two goals in the first half, but that did not stop Mighty from fight-ing back. They continued to fight collec-tively, but their strikers were unlucky.

Ray Pillars relaxed after scoring a goal against Mo-sesetjane All Stars in the 24th minute. Moseset jane All Stars capi-talized on this and found the equalizer in the dying minutes of the game.

M a g e z i Football Club beat Winners Pa rk 1 -0 a t the Old Peter

Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday. Magezi’s goal was scored from a penalty after their striker, Johnny Maake, was brought down within the box.

Modimolle Aces beat Great North FC 1-0 at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium in Modimolle.

The players of Tshakhuma RO United lost patience because the assistant referees failed to show up.

By Frank Mavhungu

No match for Rockers and RO UnitedThe MMK Funeral Services League match between Rock-ers FC and Tshakhuma RO United, which was supposed to have been played at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds on Sunday, did not material-ize. The teams were already on the pitch 30 minutes before the scheduled 15:00 kick-off time, but there was only one match official.

Mr Mboniso Ndlovu started

to check the players’ registration cards, with the hope that his two assistants would join him before long, but that was not to be.

At about 15:20 Mr Ndlovu received a message from his superiors to wait for about 20 minutes for the arrival of his assistants.

While Mr Ndlovu was still busy checking the registration cards of the players, heavy rain started to fall.

That prompted the players to leave the place. The pitch was more of a swimming pool than a playground when the two assis-tant referees, Mr V Maraga and Mr J Mammba arrived. At that stage, Mr Ndlovu had already called off the match.

Mr Mulalo Mafenya, the league’s administrative officer, told Limpopo Mirror that the match will be played on a date still to be announced.

Soccer League Logs

Last Saturday was a day that Baroka FC will not easily forget. Their chances of winning the NFD title were narrowed, following their 0-2 defeat at the hands of Jomo Cosmos at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa.

Cosmos moved from the ninth to the seventh position on the log after the victory, while Baro-ka dropped from the third to the fourth position.

Thanda Royal Zulu proved that they really mean it when they say they want to escape the relegation axe, when they beat Maluti FET College 3-2.

Chippa United maintained their leadership on the log by beating Sivutsa Stars 2-0 at the Kabokweni Stadium in Nelspruit. Chippa lead-ing the pack with 45 points, seven ahead of the second-placed Black Leopards.

FC Cape Town disappointed their supporters when they shared the spoils with Witbank Spurs, with whom they played to a goalless draw at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town. Black Leopards continued to collect significant points by beating Vasco da Gama 2-0 at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

Santos managed to collect a full compliment of points when they beat Milano United FC 1-0 at the Wynberg Military Base Stadium. United FC beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0 at the Olympia Stadium in Rustenburg.

Hi-flying Black Leopards to meet the struggling Royal ZuluAfter beating Vasco Da Gama 2-0 in their Na-tional First Division League match played at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday, Black Leop-

ards will travel to Kwazulu Natal tomorrow afternoon. They will test their strength against Thanda Royal Zulu at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay.

The fact that Thanda Royal Zulu are fighting for survival is reason enough for the Thohoyandou outfit to expect the toughest match ever. Thanda

Royal Zulu have realized that time is fast running out for them, and they have been winning matches home and away in the past weeks, despite the fact that they are still languishing at the bottom of the log. Black Leopards will pin their hopes on Rendani Ndou and David Zulu for goals, while Marks Mun-yai and the team’s captain, Dunga Munganga, are expected to keep their danger area clean from the onset to the bitter end.

Vasco Da Gama will host United FC at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town. Baroka are expected to make Roses United pay for the 0-2 defeat which they suffered at the hands of Jomo Cosmos at the Makhulong Stadium last Saturday evening. They will host them at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Maluti FET College will travel all the way to Mpumalanga, where they will lock horns with Sivutsa Stars at the Kabokweni Stadium in Nel-spruit. Blackburn Rovers will play in front of their home crowd. They will entertain Milano United FC at the Sugar Ray Zulu Stadium in Durban.

Sunday will see Witbank Spurs test their strength against Jomo Cosmos at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank. The pace setters, Chippa United, will have a date with African Warriors at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in Puthaditshaba. The Cape Town derby between Santos and FC Cape Town will be staged at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town this evening, starting at 19:00. African Warriors will play against Thanda Royal Zulu at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in the only match that will be played next Wednesday, March 12.

Bafana Sibeko of Leopards controls the ball, while Shaheed Mobara of Vasco pulls him from behind.

By Frank Mavhungu

Leopards maul Da GamaBlack Leopards crushed Vasco da Gama 2-0 in their National First Divi-sion League match, played at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

Black Leopards took the game to their opponents from the first whistle, thus forcing the Vasco defenders to play with their backs against the wall.

In the 11th minute, Leopards’ scor-ing machine, David Zulu, dribbled past two defenders in a row and unleashed a ground cutter from the edge of the box. The ball missed the goal mouth by inches, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans. Leopards’ holding midfielder, Edgar Manaka, did not live up to the fans’ expectations as he was tightly marked.

It took Black Leopards 24 min-utes to open their account. Sphiwe Mkhize unleashed a volley from outside the box and the keeper of Vasco, Gary Niewenhuis, palmed the ball back into play. Leonard Ntshangase, who was in the perfect scoring position, blasted in a rocket to give the local side a 1-0 lead.

As if they were the leading side, Vasco started playing de-fensive football afterwards. The struggle continued, with the hosts enjoying ball possession until the proceedings for the fi rst half came to an end.

Leopards strengthened their striking force by introducing Bafana Sibeko and Rendani Ndou for Sphiwe Mkhize and Jabulani

Ndebele respectively early in the last half. Ndou and David Zulu formed a deadly combination at the forefront.

The Grahamstown-based referee, Mr Kenny Qongo, took a controversial decision in the 67th minute. Jabulani Mazibuko of Vasco passed the ball back to his keeper intentionally. Instead of kicking the ball away, the stranded keeper handled it and the referee remained silent as if nothing had happened. Edgar Manaka

of Leopards and Ndiviwe Mdabuka of Vasco were reprimanded with cards for exchanging blows in the 74th minute.

Bafana Sibeko, who came on as a sub-stitute, scored Leopards’ second goal nine minutes before the fi nal whistle. He forced his way through the defence of Vasco and beat the keeper with a close-range ground cutter. The visitors from Cape Town lost shape in the middle of the park after Leopards’ second goal.

Rendani Ndou of Leopards (left) and Shaheed Mobara of Vasco wrestle to win the high ball.
