South African gospel music lovers, especially those from Limpopo and Vhembe in particular, are still in shock, following the death of local gospel star Mpho Victor “Rigalo” Gangashe.

According to Gangashe’s uncle, Mr Mushayathoni Mutobvu, the artist and his mother, Ms Violet Tshilidzi Gangashe (49), died in a vehicle accident between Bandelierkop and Louis Trichardt last

Friday. Rigalo was travelling in an Audi with his mother and his wife, Londolani Tsanwanai, when their vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle.

According to Mr Matodzi Makananise, founder and leader of the Fame Awards, Rigalo came back from Gauteng in or-der to attend the awards scheduled for Saturday evening at Polokwane. He was also scheduled to perform during the ceremony.

“I last spoke with Rigalo on Friday

afternoon and he told me he was eager to attend the event. He even told me about the nice suit he had bought specifi cally for the event. It was a shock when Takie Ndou called on Saturday morning to inform me about Rigalo’s death,” says Makananise.

Makananise added that Rigalo was voted the best male artist in Limpopo by the public. He beat well-known artists like Benny Mainganye and Chima, who was voted as the best artist during the Metro awards. - Continues on page 2

The police’s dog unit was canvassing the scene and discovered the exact spot where the baby had been dug up in the bushes. Blood, chewed-up plastic bags and a white bucket were found in the trench running through the fi eld. It is suspected that the mother had aborted the baby in the veld and just left it there.

Residents passed by, oblivious to the tragedy concealed under a dirty piece of newspaper next to the road on the corner of Jeppe- and Kort Street in Louis Trich-ardt on Tuesday morning.

Amidst a strong police presence and with the area having been cor-doned off, the newspaper covered the cold and lifeless remains of a foetus from curious eyes. It was covered by a rescue worker shortly after the gruesome fi nd was reported to the police.

More gruesome was how the foetus came to its fi nal resting place. According to information supplied to the newspaper, the foetus was discovered by a resident’s dog that was patrolling the open piece of veld and stream running along Kort Street. Sniffi ng about, the dog retrieved the foetus amongst heaps of rubbish dumped in the stream and, true to a dog’s nature, it dragged the foetus back to its home (behind the municipal testing grounds on the opposite corner). Upon noticing what it was, the horrifi ed dog owner notifi ed the Makhado police.

The baby, according to local police spokesperson Const Irene Radzilane, is estimated to have been between six and seven months old when it was aborted by its mother. She could not confi rm whether the baby had been buried alive, or how long the baby’s remains had been in the veld. Further details will depend on a post-mortem examination and will establish the baby’s age and sex.

Upon this newspaper’s arrival at the scene, the police’s dog unit was canvassing the scene and discovered the exact spot where the baby had been dug up in the bushes. Blood, chewed-up plastic bags and a white

bucket were found in the trench run-ning through the fi eld. It is suspected that the mother had aborted the baby in the veld and just left it there.

Radzilane has confi rmed that a case of concealment of birth has been opened. According to members of the local law fraternity, the charge could be changed to murder if there is evidence that the baby was alive at the time of the birth. The police have urged the public to help them in locating the mother, and anyone with information can contact the station at 015 519 4300 or Radzilane at Tel 082 565 8233.

In the meantime, Past Leonie Mayfarth of the AFM Church here in Louis Trichardt has pleaded with young expectant mothers to rather seek help than turn to such extremes if the pregnancy was unplanned. She attended the crime scene, where she prayed for God’s intervention in the situation. “What people forget is that it is usually the mother who could see no other way ... and what the mother does not realize, is that there is a local institution she can reach out to for help,” said Mayfarth.

Any local church or clinic can be approached, who will in turn assist an expectant mother.

There is also an institution in Polokwane who can facilitate adop-tions like Shiloh Home used to do when it was still in operation here in Louis Trichardt.

Mayfarth has invited young moth-ers, who need help to contact her. She can be contacted at Tel. 084 219 4406. Alternatively, Capt Danelle Fourie of the local police’s family protection unit can be contacted at 082 729 0378 for assistance, information or a referral to a social worker.

“This was Rigalo’s fi rst award in music. It is good that people voted him as the best male artist in all categories in Limpopo. I hope that, wherever he is, he is happy,” says Makananise.

His uncle, Mutobvu, described Rigalo as a peace-loving person who loved his family, community and the country at large. “He was totally against the abuse of alcohol and drugs. He used his music to educate the community about the importance

of living a clean life.Rigalo was born on April 26, 1986.

He started his schooling at Makonde Primary and also attended Raluvhim-ba Secondary, also in Makonde. He studied information technology at Mangosotho Technikon and, after completing his diploma, he worked for several companies until two years ago, when he joined i-Lab, an inde-pendent software testing company as a senior technical testing analyst.

Rigalo started singing at school. He released his fi rst album, Testimony in 2012. His second album and DVD, I am A winner, was recorded in De-cember 2013. He is survived by his

Chief Thinawanga Randima, of Khubvi, where he comes from, says he is very shocked by Rigalo’s death, and another gospel artist from Limpopo, Takie Ndou, stated that he was still confused and hurt. “He was my friend and colleague. I don’t know what to say,” said Ndou, who last spoke to Rigalo on Friday night, shortly before the accident.

A memorial service for Rigalo was held in Pretoria on Wednesday and another service will take place at Khubvi to-day (Friday). The funer-al will be held at Khubvi tomorrow (Saturday) and it will start at 06:00.

The Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court was packed to capacity on Monday for the bail application by the alleged Univen serial killer, Ndivhuho Ntsieni (25).

ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) in Vhembe, the Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) in Vhembe, pastors and Univen workers came in numbers to oppose the application.

and robbery. Earlier, his legal team asked the court to release him, so that he could go back to university.

When denying the application for bail, the court said that Ntsieni was facing severe charges and that he had failed to advance suffi cient reasons and exceptional circumstances that warranted his release on bail.

The application was also declined on the basis that if released, Ntsieni might still go back to his alleged old ways and continue with his killing spree.The case was postponed to 8 June.

The outcome of the application came as good news to the structures that have been coming to court on a number of occassions. Representing the ANCWL, its secretary, Ms Thina Mbedzi, said that they were happy that Ntsieni would still stay behind bars.

“We have been coming here in support of the families of the victims and our call has always been a clear one, that he should not be granted bail.”

Reacting outside court, Ms Alilali Singo, the chairperson of the MRM in Vhembe said they ap-plauded the decision of the court. “We are deeply concerned by the number of suspects who are released on bail and continue with their criminal behaviour. Our call has always that he be denied bail and that justice take its course,” she added.

Ntsieni’s alleged reign of terror started in March 2014 and continued for fi ve months at Univen and surrounding areas. During his arrest, Ntsieni, a fi nal year BSc student, was found in possession of a Univen student card and cell phone, allegedly belonging to one of the victims, Sandy Thagisa. She had been severely assaulted and left for dead, but miraculously survived. Thagisa has since passed away this year.

He was also found in possession of a cell phone belonging to another of his victims, Brenda Ndove, and a hairpin belonging to another murdered wom-an, Livhuwani Mbodi.

Several local musicians were presented with awards during the Film, Arts, Music Enter-tainment (FAME) SA Awards at a glittering ceremony which took place at the University of Limpopo Turfl oop Campus on Saturday.

The event was, however, dampened by the news of the tragic death the previous evening of local gospel star Mpho Regalo. He was awarded the prize in the Best Male category.

The 2011 South African Traditional Music Award winner, Jininka, once again proved to be a force to be reckoned with in the music frater-nity. This time, she has won the Best traditional Tshivenda artist category. After the event, she said that she would like to thank thousands of her fans who voted for her to win the award.

“My heartfelt gratitude goes to all my fans who sacrifi ced their time, money and energy to vote for me. This means that they really care about my music, and I promise to give them good music as always.”

The Levubu police have arrested a 33-year-old woman in connection with the murder of her husband. It is alleged that the woman stabbed and killed the 53-year-old Mr Rueben Mawela at his home at Tshakhuma last Friday night.

The spokesperson for the Levubu SAPS, W/O Solly Mukhola, said that they were investigating the case. It is alleged that the deceased and the suspect were involved in an argument while busy drinking at a local tavern. During the argument, the deceased allegedly stabbed his wife in the head. He then left the tavern and was fol-lowed by his wife. At their home, she allegedly stabbed him and, according to Mukhola, the deceased had several wounds on the head. He later died from his injuries.

“The incident occurred at midnight. After being alerted by members of the community, the police responded very quickly. When we arrived on the scene, the victim had already died,” Mukhola said.

The chairperson of the Tshakhuma Civic, Mr Nkhangweni Nemaduluni, said he was very disturbed by the

incident. “This came as a shock to me and the whole community,” he said. Nemadulu said this is a rare and strange incident which they condemned in the strongest terms. “It happened at midnight in public and there were people out there who could have stopped the whole inci-dent,” he added.

The chairperson of Munna Nndin-nyi, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, de-scribed it as a horrible incident which caused a lot of pain to the people close to the family.

“People should break their silence and share their problems with either close family members or community leaders. We also advise those with family problems to contact us as we have highly trained nurses, psycholo-gists and social workers. It is import-ant to seek professional assistance rather than resorting to violent actions like ending the lives of poor, innocent children,” said Mufunwaini.

The suspect briefly appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday and the case was post-poned to 15 May for a bail appli-cation.

Limpopo’s provincial heritage is under threat from poachers.

This is according to the Democratic Alliance (DA), following a question they had recently put to the provincial Department of Economic Devel-opment, Environment and Tourism (LEDET).

According to the information the LEDET supplied, said the DA this week in a press release, the conser-vation systems and safety measures in state-owned game reserves all over Limpopo are failing miserably.

There have been 418 known poach-ing cases, but only 113 successful arrests were made between 2012 and 2014. The parks that were hit hardest by poachers, where 14 rhinos had been poached, were Atherstone,

Nwanedi and Letaba Ranch Nature Reserves.

Of concern was a reserve such as D’Nyala Nature Reserve, where two rhinos were poached during 2013, and only six field rangers are employed.

The value of animals lost to poach-ers in all the reserves during this time is conservatively estimated at a staggering R25 million.

“The conservation of our animals must be prioritized to enhance inter-national tourism, which will stimulate job creation as well as to conserve our natural heritage for generations to come,” said the DA.

They will therefore table a motion calling on the LEDET MEC, Seeap-aro Sekoati, to tighten measures to protect Limpopo’s wildlife.

Mr Phillip Olivier of the Sout-pansberg Ratepayers Association (SRPA) has once again invited members of the public to come and inspect the Makhado Municipali-ty’s supplementary valuation roll.

Olivier said they had obtained a copy of the supplementary valuation roll from DDP Valuers, after receiv-ing notice from the Makhado Munic-ipality of their intent to amend their property rates policy and property rates bylaw. A copy of the supple-mentary valuation roll is available for inspection at the office of the SRPA in the Sentraal building in Erasmus Street. The Makhado Municipality gave notice of their intent to amend their property rates policy and property rates bylaw in term of Section 12(3) (b) and 21 of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act (Act 32 of 2000). Members of the public are

invited to submit written comments and/or to make written representa-tions in this regard to the munici-pality.

Any such comments or represen-tations must reach the municipality on or before Monday, 25 May, by handing them in at the office of the municipal manager or by mailing them to Private Bag X2596, Louis Trichardt, 0920.

Local resident gets “executed” in ThohoyandouA resident of Makwarela, Mr Tshilidzi Makhado (36), was brutally shot dead execution style at a stop street in Tho-hoyandou early on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting, which took place at around 13:30, has in-stilled fear in residents as several shootings have been reported around Thohoyandou and Mak-warela in recent times.

The scene where the incident happened was soon swarming with curious and terrified on-lookers. The roads next to the scene were cordoned off for several hours.

Family members, including the mother of the deceased, cried uncontrollably upon seeing the body slumped over the steering wheel. Blood was seeping under the car and flowing in the street.

Mr Makhado was on his way to pick up school pupils at a school in Thohoyandou when he was ambushed by unknown assailants.

Tragedies have become a way of life for the Makhado family of four sons. Several years ago, the eldest son died after he was knocked down by a car next to Techniven. In 2013, the second-born, Thanyani, was

shot dead and killed in broad daylight at Makwarela. The third brother, Lufuno, was shot and killed last month, and the family was still mourning his death when the youngest was killed on Tuesday.

The owner of a se-curity company and a gun expert, who happened to be at the scene of Tuesday’s incident, said that the killers were not or-dinary criminals but highly trained profes-sionals who shot with precision.

T h o h o y a n d o u police spokesper-son Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed the incident, but said it was still very early to link it to the oth-er two shootings that had taken place in the family.

“Yes, a man who was driving a Mazda bakkie was shot dead at an intersection in Thohoyandou Block G. The man was shot several times in the body and the head with a high-calibre R5 rifle and spent car-tridges were found at the scene. We have opened a murder case, but at this stage no arrests have been made.” The police have appealed to any-body with information regarding the incident to contact them.

A large contingent of the lo-cal music fraternity attended the launch of the 2015 Tshiv-enda Music Awards at the Joe Matsila Guest House at Ha-Matsila last Wednesday.

The competition is funded by the National Lottery Board, Matsila Development Trust and Rodibrite to an amount of R5,5 million. The event last took place in 2013, but due to a lack of funding, no awards were made last year.

The aim of the upcoming awards is to recognize, pro-mote and reward artists who pride themselves on singing in

the Tshivenda language. These awards also aim to preserve culture and heritage. “I am so glad and we are also happy as musicians, as we expect something like this in our dis-trict and also in our province. Artists must be awarded. We are also happy for those who managed to fund the awards again,” says one artist.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila says he was happy that there were organisations willing to help with funding the event after the fi nancial diffi culties of the past. “This launch makes me very proud that our Tshi-

venda music is fi nally going to gain a good reputation and dig-nity and the artists themselves are going to be recognised and promoted. I think this is very good for the development of the music industry in this region of the Tshivenda-speak-ing people.”

The Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Rejoice Ma-budafhasi, who also attended the event, said they were en-couraging artists to take care of their fi nances to avoid being in tough fi nancial situations in the future.

She said that it was im-

portant that artists treat their careers like businesses. Mabu-dafasi said that the government was determined to help artists overcome fi nancial diffi culties. “They (artists) die poor and we see some of their houses are repossessed. We would like to give them support. Let us see artists as any other business that can grow. That is why I announced that we have what is called the Mzansi Golden Economy.

The Mzantsi Golden Econo-my is a fund that assists those who are in arts and crafts and are preserving our heritage.

It is money that has been put aside to help our entities to de-velop.” She added that the love of indigenous music was in her blood. “There is nothing more important than preserving your culture, because it is the wealth of the coming generation. Many people think that playing indigenous musical instrument lowers one’s dignity, which is not true. I am proud of my culture and that is why I don’t even feel shy when I play my music.

Many businesspeople around Vhembe will benefit from the tourism indaba that will take place in Durban this week.

The Durban indaba is one of the leading tourism marketing events in Africa and also one of the top three events of its kind on the international calendar.

According to a spokesman for

the Vhembe District Municipal-ity, delegations from the area will attend the indaba to market the tourism products with the aim of attracting both domestic and international tourists to the area.

Product owners will also be selling their products to tour-ists as well as learning various

business skills, as they will be sharing with other exhibitors during the event.

According to the spokesper-son, local entrepreneurs will also be able to rub shoulders with manufacturers from Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, Zambia, Bo-tswana, Zimbabwe, Brazil and several other countries.

“The career that you choose must meet your personal abilities and you must understand that the career will determine you future. It must suit your interests and abilities, otherwise you won’t suc-ceed,” said Nkhangweleni Dama, an educational pschychologist at the University of Venda’s Centre for higher education, teaching and learning.

Grade 12s from omore than 150 secondary schools around the Vhem-be region in Limpopo received in-formation about the careers of their choice from the exhibitors from various universities, technical and vocational education and training and private colleges during the Univen Careers Exhibition last week.

According to the director of com-munications and marketing at the university, Mr Takalani Dzaga, the aim of the event was to assist Grade

12s to choose careers of their choice and “encourage them to apply on time to avoid the rush. Some of the students are not getting admission at the beginning of the academic year, due to the fact that they didn’t apply in time.”

One of the learners who attended the Univen Career Exhibition, Luten-do Mulele of Tombolagole Secondary School in Tshitavha-Sambandou, said the exhibition was an eye opener for her and other Grade 12 pupils to apply for a career of their choice. Mulele (20) said she planned to study towards a degree in Nursing Science at Univen next year.

“Now, I have more information about where to study, bursaries, loans and which career to choose after passing my matric. I will encourage others to study hard during the course of the year, so that we can realize our dreams,” said Mulele.

Phalaphala FM presented 2 130 pairs of school shoes and sanitary towels to 50 primary schools in the Vhembe District last Friday.

Addressing school principals at the station’s Thohoyandou studios, the executive poducer of programming, Paula Mathonsi, said donating clothes to the disadvantaged pupils was one of their priorities in order to make a difference in the lives of needy children.

“It deeply touches us as the station to see children going to school bare-footed, and winter is coming. Education is the future of our country and if we encourage our children to go to school, it will contribute that South Africa becomes an educated nation. For the past four years, we have distributed

more than 50 000 pairs to needy school kids,” said Mathonsi.

The station manager of PhalaPhala FM, Mr Freddie Sadiki, said the station had, over the

years, managed to build an emotional bond with its listeners as demonstrated by their continuous support of numerous projects. “During our stake-holder engagement session last year, our listeners proposed that over and above donating shoes, Phalaphala FM should establish a trust fund to assist pupils who cannot afford to pay either reg-istration fees or tuition.”

On behalf of principals, Mr Solomon Nemutan-dani said poverty hindered children’s performance in the class.

He said some pupils attended classes hungry and without proper clothing. “The shoes we are receiving from Phalaphala FM will make a huge difference,” he added.

Prisoners in the Thohoyandou Correctional Centre do not have the leisure of lying around and doing nothing. Every day is a working day since prisoners are performing numerous and different rehabilitational tasks.

According to the Thohoyan-dou Management Area’s commu-nications manager, Mr Tshifhiwa Magadani, all these form part of the rehabilitation programmes that are being offered by the Department of Correctional Ser-vices in order to equip offenders with skills.

“Some forms of breakages, leakage, and maintenance are being attended to and fixed by offenders in the prison,” he said.

A prisoner, Mvelelo Mushi-ana, said that learning to weld in prison would help to equip him with skills, so that he could fend for himself and his family when

his time for release arrived.Another prisoner, Thilivhali

Nelufule, had this to say: “First of all, I want to convey my unre-served apology to the community that I have wronged. I regret what I did.” Nelufule warned the youth to refrain from criminal activities and encouraged them to concentrate on their studies. He further highlighted and expressed appreciation for the good work that correctional services are do-ing by providing offenders with skills while they are serving their sentences.

Mr Dealers Mthombeni, the correctional officer who is honing offender’s skills, smiled with satisfaction when asked about his day-to-day activities with offenders.

“I feel good because, since I joined the department in 2012, no offenders that I had trained in

the welding section had relapsed and ended up in prison again,” he said. “I enjoy what I am doing as a correctional officer.”

Magadani pointed out that the rehabilitation programmes are being offered to offenders, so that they can improve their ed-ucation as a way of preparing to participate in a very competitive job-hunting exercise out there.

“We request our communities to welcome offenders back, because they are our sisters and brothers,” he said. “What will happen if communities do not give rehabilitated offenders a second chance? If such offenders are not accepted, the likelihood of their returning to crime is high. Preventing re-offending is an important element of creating safer communities. With the right attitude, communities can assist in making it happen.”

Effective rehabilitation programme for offenders

Young Katlego reunited with her motherA two-year-old girl, Katlego Khosa from Mufe-ba village, was discharged from Mankweng Hospital and reunited with her blind mother a fortnight ago. The toddler had sustained serious head injuries while visiting her aunt at Ha-Maila in September last year.

According to initial reports the aunt, Ivy Mulaudzi, asked the blind mother of the child, Veronica Khoza, permission to take the girl from Mufeba to her house at Maila. She apparently wanted the girl to play with her own child. Ms

Khoza allegedly battled for some time to get the child back and was eventually told that her daughter had been admitted to hospital with serious head injuries.

The aunt was arrested shortly afterwards.Ms Mulaudzi was granted bail of R1 500 by

the Tshitale Magistrate’s Court after spending six months in the police cells. She gave birth to a baby girl while in the cells in February this year. She then requested to take the baby to a traditional medical practitioner to treat the child for a type

of illness that could apparently not be cured by modern doctors.

When the magistrate granted her bail, she was warned not to visit Mufeba Village where the Mulaudzi family stay.

Katlego’s blind mother, Veronica Khosa, said she was happy that her baby was back from the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), but she was still angry with Ivy because she believes Ivy didn’t tell the truth in court.

“I’m spending my grant taking my baby to the doctor and pharma-cist to treat the wounds. I prayed day and night for God to save my baby. I was supposed to save the money for Katlego’s schooling. The very same Ivy contravened her bail conditions, because she came to Mufeba Village trying to ask forgiveness from my neighbours,” she said.

The Makhado spokesperson for the SAPS confirmed that the wom-an who was arrested in connection with the incident had given birth, but said this had not occurred in the police cells.

She confirmed that Ivy had given birth under police guard at the Don-ald Frazer Hospital.

The Nyavhumbwa wa dakaila cultural group entertained guests at Masia when Chief John Masia was installed as the new chief of Tandavhalwe a fortnight ago. The young members of the group said that they wanted to appeal to young people not to forget their culture.

House for struggling familyThe Nazareen Church, in part-nership with Mabidi Construc-tion, came to the rescue of the disadvantaged Khoza family of Mashamba last Tuesday, when they built them a five-roomed house and equipped a borehole.

The official launch was attend-ed by Thovhele Vho-Nndweleni Mashamba, Makhado councillors, clerics and members of the local community.

The Khoza family had been living in a dilapidated mud house since the flood of 2000. The poverty-stricken family of seven was later accommo-dated in a dipalipidated room. Mr Simon Khoza, a pensioner, depends on a social grant.

Khoza said that his family sur-vived by selling firewood. He said that he never thought that he would own a house one day. He has been struggling to support this family

with his pension grant, as his grant is too little to support seven people.

He expressed delight and grati-tude for what the donators had done for them. He told Limpopo Mirror that their former house had had no privacy for any of them. They had to sleep on the cold floor.

Pastor Elvis Lehasa said that the Nazareen Church cared about the people who had lost hope in life, “but as the church we sit down and look what we can do to help the people who need assistance.”

Mr Steven Mabidi of Mabidi Construction said they prided them-selves on being able to change the lives of people for the better. Tho-vhele Vho-Nndweleni Mashamba said more challenges lay ahead, but members of the community were happy because the church and do-nors were joining the fight against poverty and underdevelopment.

Eight teams to vie for Boy Nemakonde Challenge honours

It remains to be seen whether Joe Express will make a comeback and beat Mosesetjane All Stars when they meet in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Joe Express must win the match in order to restore the team’s pride after losing 1-4 to Bellevue Winners Park at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen last Saturday.

On the other hand, Mosesetjane All Stars will be fi ghting like a wounded tiger after giving away points to their opponents last weekend. They lost 2-3 to Dynamos. Stars must keep a watchful eye on the Express goal poachers, Thembisani Nevhu-lamba and Ndivhuwo “Segere” Ravhuhali, or else they will regret it.

The match of the week will be between the title chasers, Bellevue Winners Park and Magezi, at the TT Cholo Stadium in Polokwane. The winner of this match is likely to lift the league champi-onship trophy at the end of the season. Bellevue and Magezi are separated by a gap of one point, with Bellevue leading the pack. Magezi are still fresh from a 5-0 victory over Bilika All Stars at the Giyani Stadium.

After beating A1 Terrors 5-0 at the Mogol Sta-dium in Lephalale last weekend, Lephalale Young Killers are gearing up for another convincing vic-tory when they host Great North FC at the same venue tomorrow afternoon. Giyani Hotspurs will host Mighty FC at the Giyani Stadium.

A1 Terrors will entertain Winners Park at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium in their Waterberg derby, while the Dolphins FC will travel to Modimolle to face Modimolle Aces. Polokwane United will battle it out with Dynamos at the Giyani Stadium.

The draw for the annual Boy Nemakonde Soccer Challenge was conducted at the Begwa Brickyard on Sunday afternoon. Just like in the previous two years, eight teams from Tshaulu and the surrounding areas will take part in the tournament.

All matches will be played at the Tshifudi Stadi-um. The fi rst matches will be played on Saturday, 20 June, and the semifi nal matches will be played the following day. The fi nal is scheduled for Sat-urday, 27 June.

The eight teams that will take part in the tour-nament are Tshaulu Powerline, Munangwe United Brothers, Dimani Young Masters, Begwa FC, Lukalo Hotspurs, TMT Junior Birds, New Look FC and Mubvumoni XI Arrows. The fi xtures for the fi rst matches are TMT Junior Birds vs Lukalo Hotspurs, Dimani Young Masters vs Begwa FC, Munangwe United Brothers vs New Look FC and Mubvumoni XI Arrows vs Tshaulu Powerlines.

According to the tournament director, Mr Eric Murudi, this year’s champions will take home a cash prize of R10 000, a soccer kit, two soccer balls and a fl oating trophy. The runner-up will be presented with a cash prize of R1 000, soccer kit and two soccer balls, while R500, soccer kit and two soccer balls are awaiting the team that will fi nish the tournament in the third spot.

All teams that will take part in the tournament will receive two soccer balls. Individual awards will be presented to the best player in the tournament, the top goal scorer and the best coach. They will each be presented with a sport shop voucher to the value of R1 000 and trophies.

Murudi also stated that all the teams, together with the fans, would be provided with free transport to and from the stadium as part of the sponsorship for the tournament.

Tshaulu Powerlines are the defending cham-pions.

“It is a greater bushbaby, not a tokoloshe”I am writing this letter in response to the cover

story I killed the tokoloshe by Elmon Tshikhudo in Limpopo Mirror of 8 May 2015.

I am deeply concerned about the article and would like to take the opportunity to clarify and inform people about the so-called strange crea-ture or tokoloshe which the article is about.

For a zoologist or nature enthusiast there is nothing strange about the creature the commu-nity member is holding in his hands in the photo accompanying the article. The animal is neither unknown nor dangerous. The English common name for this animal is greater galago or greater bushbaby (Otolemur crassicaudatus), the latter name stemming from the baby-like calls the animal makes at night. In TshiVenda it is known as zelehani.

The greater bushbaby uses these calls to com-municate with other bushbabies – much like the roar of a lion or a dog’s bark.

The bushbaby belongs to the primates, like baboons, monkeys and humans. South Africa is home to two different kinds of bushbabies: the greater bushbaby (the one Mr Munzhelele chose to kill) and the lesser bushbaby – as the names indicate the lesser bushbaby is much smaller than the greater bushbaby.

Bushbabies are active sporadically throughout the night, moving from their daytime resting places at about sunset.

They live in small groups of up to six individ-uals, but generally search for food on their own. The greater bushbaby mainly feeds on fruit and vegetable matter and gum from the sweet thorn, being predominantly vegetarian. It generally does not eat meat or hunt other animals. Although the calls of the bushbaby can be heard frequently in areas they occur, they are very shy creatures and getting a glimpse of them in the wild is a rare and special occasion.

The greater bushbaby can be found in forests including those along streams and rivers, well developed woodlands and thickets. Bushbabies spend most of their time in the canopy of trees, but do occasionally come to the ground when searching for food. The greater bushbaby mostly moves in the canopy of trees on all four legs, walking or running along branches. When on the ground they can sometimes be seen hopping on their hind legs, moving in a semi-upright position on two legs only and using their tail for balance. The greater bushbaby is increasingly threatened by the loss of forest and woodland habitat in the country.

I would like to appeal to people to refrain from killing or persecuting these fascinating animals. They pose no threat to humans whatsoever and there is absolutely no need to be afraid of them. Like every living creature on the planet, bushba-bies play an important role in nature and they are part of South Africa’s amazing natural heritage which we should all be proud of and help protect for the generations to come.

The misinformation contained in this article and complete lack of understanding of the char-acter of this animal, particularly fuelling fear that this harmless species poses a threat to people, can result in detrimental impacts on populations of this gentle primate, similar to the unfounded belief concerning the medicinal properties of rhino horn.

Young Ngelekanyo Tshivule of Tshiozwi celebrated her sixth birthday on Sunday. SACM warns against “identity thieves”

The director of Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre, Mr Lazarus Ncongwane.

South African Custodial Management, oper-ating as the Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre in Louis Trichardt, is concerned about reoccurring thefts of identification of their employees by fraudsters, who then use such information to open credit accounts in stores.

The prison director, Mr Lazarus Ncongwane, said fraud cases were brought to the company’s attention some four months ago by affected and concerned employees.

The management is therefore warning all fraud-sters to stop all such crimes.They are also informing credit providers and stores to make sure that they are giving or approving the correct applicants when they help people who claim to be the company’s employees. “If they come with an SACM salary advice, credit providers must check the authenticity of that salary advice,” he said. “The identity must tally with the ID.

If there’s doubt, they should contact’s SACM’s human resources department to verify. If possible, credit providers are advised to take a photograph of these applicants which will help us and the po-lice to crack these fraud cases.”Ncongwane also confirmed that several cases had been opened in Makhado and Polokwane, where these fraudulent activities were reported.

Gogobole Bucs’ development team, who par-ticipate in the Mageu League of the Limpopo Dairy League, received a brand new soccer kit from Dr Raymond de Swardt during a recent ceremony in Louis Trichardt.

De Swardt said that the donation was a way of motivating the team to work hard and dominate the league. “We have been touched by the plight of the young players, who seem committed and dedicated to sports but lack resources. We then decided to buy them a brand new soccer kit, soccer boots and soccer balls,” he said.

Team manager Mr George Maphala said they were very motivated by the new soccer equipment. “We are playing well in the league matches, but we lack even some of the basic equipment such as soccer boots, shin guards and other necessities for the players. We are very happy to have received this morale-boosting gesture,” he said. He revealed that it was diffi cult for his team to run smoothly without a sponsor.

While Lamontvile Golden Arrows were celebrating their automatic promotion to the Absa Premiership Division on Sunday, it was a sad moment for the players, officials and supporters of Garankuwa United and Maluti FET College.

Golden Arrows fi nished their National First Division League program with 60 points, six ahead of Jomo Cosmos. Maluti FET College are languishing at the bottom of the log. They managed to collect only 20 points this season.

More than 40 children from Muhuyu Primary School outside Thohoyandou, who used to go to school barefoot, received shoes from former pupils of the school. “We used to come to school without shoes, because our parents could not afford it. We took education seriously and now we are working, and so we decided to change the life of poor children from our former school for the better,” said Mr Mphedziseni Ratshivhadelo. He and several former pupils of the school, who are now working in various departments and companies decided to assist the disadvantaged pupils. He said that, apart from donating school shoes, they handed young girls sanitary pads as some them could not afford it. The game was characterized by wasted scoring opportunities. The Maebane team could have tak-en the lead in the eighth minute, but their centre forward, Mulalo Thovhei, fumbled with the ball at the goal mouth.

The Dynamos’ defence, which was marshalled by Thidziambi Mutandari and Mashudu Mbau, showed consistency throughout the game. They denied the strikers of Eagles numerous obvious goals. Matodzi Maruli of Dynamos was sent off with a red card for dangerous play and Dynamos played the last 65 minutes of the game with 10 men.

Pride Foromo made his presence felt in the 46th minute. He cleared the ball away from the goal line with his keeper, Phamelani Maluleke, already beaten.

The referee flashed a yellow card in the 66th minute and booked Lufuno Luvhengo of Eagles for a dangerous tackle on Velaphi Mphaphuli. The saying that goes “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” is a reality for the rural

school that aims to promote different sporting codes besides the learning and teaching.

At Tshivhidzo’s Ma-siagwala Secondary School in Maungani village, they like to pro-mote different sporting codes, but they used to participate in tattered clothes. This came to an end on Thursday, when ISO-Q Safety, based in Gauteng, donated soccer and netball kits and balls.

The sports organis-er at the school, Mr Petros Makhuvha, said that the pupils used to play games with other schools around Vhem-be, especially their sports day, but without valid soccer and netball kits. ISO-Q’s business consultant, Ms Grace Mukhudwana, said the donation was part of her company’s social responsibilities to com-munities and schools. “We want to get our pupils engaged con-structively,” she said.

Unlimited Youth to commemorate 16 June

Zamenkomste and Western Stars in draw

The Unlimited Youth Development is organising a jam-packed programme to commemorate Youth Day (16 June) this year.

The programme will start with a fun walk and it is expected that between 500 and 1 500 young people will participate. It will start at Kutama High School at 08:00. Activities will move to the Mudulini Community Hall and the activities will

include debates, a battle of artists, choirs, dancers and many more.

Zamenkomste Liverpool held the Safa Vhembe Stream E Administrators’ league contenders Madombidzha Western Stars to a 1-all draw at Zamenkomste on Saturday.

Stars squandered numerous scoring opportu-nities, making the result an unjust reflection of the game. Their front runners, Percy Munonoka, Mukovhe Mudzikili and Thabo Matuba, were tightly marked, and as their midfielders were neu-tralised, Liverpool started to volley from behind in a bid to frustrate their opponents.

Liverpool snatched their goal in the 24th minute. Khathu Tshilin-ga connected a ball and chipped it over the op-ponent’s keeper, Lovely Siema. Six minutes later, Stars equalised through their lethal striker, Percy Munonoka.

He headed home after a scramble in the box. Lufuno Ndou of Stars came close to scoring three minutes before the half-time whistle. He forced his way through the defence of Liverpool and lost possession on the brink of unleashing from inside the box.

Stars introduced two new faces early in the last half. Oscar Leaka and Aluwani Nedzamba gave way to Percy Munonoka and Daniel Mukosi respectively.

Liverpool introduced Kingsley Muligwa and Mpho Khantshi for Thabelo Mamafha Ndivha Manenzhe respectively.

Raymond Sinugo and Khathutshelo Tshilinga of Liverpool were reprimanded with yellow cards for rough play.

This weekend marks the beginning of the long-awaited NFD promotional play-off matches. Black Leopards will play their opening match in front of their home crowd. They will host Jomo Cosmos at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday.

The Thohoyandou outfit booked a place in the promotional play-offs after completing their league programme in the third position. Three teams, namely Black Leopards, Jomo Cosmos (both from NFD) and Moroka Swallows, will take part in the playoffs. Cosmos and Leopards

fi nished their NFD League programs in the second and third places respectively, while Moroka Swallows wrapped up their Absa Premiership division programme in the second-last spot.

According to the Black Leopards head coach, Mr Zeca Marques, his charges are more than ready for the playoffs. Speaking shortly after their 2-0 victory over African Warriors at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Sunday, Marques said that they did not want to miss this chance. He added that the players were well aware of the fact that it was now a matter of do or die.

He reiterated the fact that they were not going to use their head-to-head results

with Jomo Cosmos as their measuring stick to determine what they will come across on Sunday. According to the history of the two teams, Cosmos’s best result against Black Leopards was a draw.

Marques’s words were echoed by the club’s chairman, Mr David Thidiela. According to him, their aim is to win both home matches and at least one away fi xture, saying that would be good enough to secure them a place in the elite league.

Black Leopards will travel to Johannes-burg next Wednesday (20 May), where they will play their second match against Moroka Swallows at the Dobsonville Stadium.
