Rabelani Madzebu (27) will spend the next 20 years in pris-on, after the Limpopo Local Division of the High Court in Thohoyandou found him guilty of murdering his girlfriend.

This follows an incident on 9 May 2013 on the Univen cam-pus, when Madzebu stabbed his girlfriend, Takalani Mbulungeni (21), to death. She was a fi-nal-year nursing and hailed from Vhurivhuri.

According to the indictment, Mbulungeni and her friend, Fu-lufhelo Mapusha, were walking on the University of Venda cam-pus when Madzebu approached them.

It was testified that Madzebu requested to talk Mbulungeni, while her friend continued to walk away. “Suddenly, when the deceased’s friend looked back, he saw the deceased lying in a pool of blood and the accused

was lying on top of the deceased with his throat slit,” says the indictment.

The Medico Legal Post-mor-tem examination report con-cluded that the deceased had died due to sharp-force trauma to the chest.

Fourteen witnesses were called and Judge Ephraim Makgoba handed down the sentence last Wednesday. Adv Ratshilumela prosecuted in the case.

Mrs Thingahangwi Rose Makhari recently launched her book, Tshedza tsha matshelo, during an event at Ha-Khakhu Thondoni village.

The name of the book, literally translated, means There is light at the end of the tunnel of life.

The book, with 16 poems, cov-ers marriage, morality, youth ex-pectations, virtue, ethics, values, accountability and hard work.

Local residents, politicians,

businesspeople and academics attended the launch and well-known cleric and academic Dr Ntavhanyeni Phaswana reviewed the book during the event.

Many of the guests were sur-prised at the level of insight of the author as she narrated some of her poems, much to the delight of her mother, Vho-Muvhulawa Khakhu. The author was born a princess. Her father, Prince Petrus Tshikonelo Khakhu,

passed away when she was still young, and she was raised by her mother, Vho-Muvhulawa Florah Khakhu, and her brother, Edward Khakhu. She is a mathematics teacher by profession.

“Armed with two degrees and a diploma, she is efficiently man-aging Mangwele Primary School as principal,” said Phaswana, the circuit manager for Soutpansberg North Circuit, where Mangwele Primary is situated.

Xenophobic attacks have erupted in the Sinthumule and Kutama area and it seems as if Zimbabwean citizens have to bear the brunt of the communi-ty’s frustrations with escalating crime levels.Foreigners, especially those from South Africa’s northern neighbour, are accused of being involved in a spate of house-breakings. Residents of the various villages are accusing them of breaking into houses and stealing house-hold goods such as flat-screen TV sets.In the past couple of weeks, thieves targeted residents from Tshiozwi, Gogobole, Ravele, Madabani, Madodonga, Tshik-warani, Maebane and Muraleni. One of the residents, Mr Sai Mukhuba, said criminals had tak-en over the area. They apparently roam the streets, terrorizing resi-dents at will. “We are at the mer-cy of these thugs and we need to act in order to stop them in their tracks,” he said. “We gave all the Zimbabweans just few days to vacate our villages, because they

are giving us problems. Community members are now

angry and we will take the law into our hands. We don’t care whether they have married SA women or not, we are raid-ing them day and night,” said Mukhuba.Mukhuba said the area had be-come one of the worst crime zones in the area. “We are here as concerned citizens of this area. We need to put our heads together and see if we can come up with strategies that can help us fight crime. Our area has be-come a dangerous place to live in,” he said. “We are tired of the anarchy caused by thugs. We are tired of crime that is taking place while we watch helplessly.”According to Mukhuba, the com-munity needs to devise a strategy to fight crime and must not wait for the police to act. “The crime rate was becoming too high in our area. We realized that the police can-not be everywhere, so we decided to stand up and fight against this cancer that is destroying our

community,” he said.A Zimbabwean citizen resid-ing in the area, Mr Zomonte Zhamoroka, says they are not all criminals. “This is just to show that we do not support crime and that most of us are here in the country legally. We are here because the conditions are not favourable back home, but we are law-abiding and make an honest living. We cannot afford to be chased away from this area simply because of a few people who are used to crime and are not prepared to change,” he said.

Const Thilivhali Malowa of the Tshilwavhusiku SAPS said that they were encouraged that the community had shown the willingness to work hand in hand with the police.

“We encourage our commu-nities to come forward with any information that could be used to prosecute perpetrators of crime successfully and (we promote the idea) that communities organize themselves into policing forums that will help fight crime,” she said.

More alleged xenophobic attacks in area

Shortly after the death of Min-ister Collins Chabane, the Van’wanati clan was dealt a second blow with the death of the traditional leader, Hosi John Xikundu (75).

He died in the Polokwani MediClinic last Friday after a

short illness. The spokesperson for the fam-

ily, Rev Piet Mathebula, said it was a big loss for the Van’wa-nati, as he was a forthright leader who was uncompromising and believed in speaking his mind.

He added that “the late chief was at the forefront of developing

his community. He was also leading from the

front in the Malamulele people’s demand for their own munici-pality.”

A memorial service was held at the Xikundu tribal premises on Thursday and the chief will be laid to rest today (Friday).

(From page 1)Mulaudzi says villagers have no access to clean

water. She also says residents have to lead a harsh life, while the municipality’s officials live a life of luxury. “The municipality distributes water using trucks, but it only comes once a month. If it comes while you are away, you will not have any water. We last saw a drop of water coming from the municipal water taps a long time ago,” she says.

“We are forced to use the water from the man-hole because there is no water in the village. We were also told that we were going to receive water from the Nandoni dam, but it is not happening and we are continuing to suffer,” Mulaudzi adds. She explains that, in order to purify the water before drinking, they pour some cement or ash into the containers. This clears some of the algae and makes it appear more drinkable.

Residents are also upset about the fact that the government seems to neglect them. “No one wants to get involved with our problems here. It is

“We are tired of empty promises”

high time that people start taking us seriously, as we are part of this district. We are fed up,” say the angry community members.

Mulaudzi says that the ward councillor, Mr Livhu-wani Maduze, was being disrespectful to them. She adds that the neighbour-ing Mandala, Tshikmbani and Tshivhidulu villages, which fall under the same ward, have water all the time. “We tried to travel to the bush, which is dan-gerous to collect water, but it is really not working, because it is far,” she says.

“My people, like the residents of Dopeni, also deserve basic water.” When contacted for com-ment, Cllr Livhuwani Maduze dismissed claims that he was not attending to the problems of the community members in the village. When asked about the residents´ concern that he only con-centrated on the Mandala village where he was staying, Maduze said it was not true. He agreed that Dopeni is facing a water problem. He said that he reported the matter to the Vhembe dsitrict to address the problem. The spokesperson of the Vhembe Municipality, Matodzi Ralushai, denied the claim that the residents had spent many years going without water. He said the municipality made use of water tankers to deliver water to the area. Ralushai further said that the municipality had drilled boreholes to address the problem of water in the area. He warned those people who are still using the water for cooking and drinking purposes not to do so and he warned against ille-gal connections. He said that those found doing illegal connections would be arrested.

Water has become a very scarce commodity in most parts of Limpo-po, especially in the Vhembe area.

In some villages, residents have to walk for more than five kilome-ters to the nearest river or well to get water. Mangondi village, some kilometers from Thohoyandou and just on the doorstep of the giant mul-timillion-rand Nandoni Dam, is no exception. The dam does not provide water for these residents and they have to watch enviously while water is being used at far-flung areas.

These woes have now become a thing of the past, however. A well-known and one of the fastest-growing churches in Limpopo, the Calvary Christian Church International at Lwamondo, under the leadership of Dr Maxwell Masakona, has donated a borehole with a 10 000-litre tank to store water.

Calvary Christian Church project manager Takalani Lethole said the borehole came about after research done by the church as to how they could plough back into the communi-ties where they operate. “We looked at many needs by the community, but we came to the conclusion that providing water would make a big dif-ference as many areas lack water. Just as we were busy with our planning, a crèche from Vhufuli approached us and that became our first water project in 2010. Since then, we have inter-vened in four communities and this one is the fifth. We hope to roll out this programme to as many villages

as possible,” said Lethole.Local traditional leader Vhakoma

Vho-Phineas Ndou said he had set-tled in the area in the early fifties. “We have always experienced water problems and people would end up going to the nearby Luvuvhu River and drawing dirty water which was not safe. Some were even attacked by crocodiles. This borehole will make a very big difference here.

The crèche kids and the community at large will also benefit."

Handing over the borehole, Pastor David Mufamadi said as a church they were directed by the gospel in practice. “This is one of our chu rch ’ s v i -sions, namely of enriching our communi t i e s in a practical way. We will continue iden-tifying needy communi t i e s and making the necessary inter-ventions,” he said.

Long terms in jail for rapists

Major street refurbishing programme for Louis Trichardt

100-Year old gogo laid to rest

The High Court in Thohoyandou sentenced two young men to long jail sentences after they were found guilty of kidnapping and raping a pregnant woman.

The case was finalised last Thurs-day (9 April).

Acting Judge Maele Mushasha sentenced Mashudu Madzhie (22) and Rofhiwa Mavhungu (23), both from Tshituni village in Nzhelele, to 25 years’ imprisonment after they were found guilty on count one of rape. They raped a 31-year-old woman in front of her eight-year-old son on 7 April 2013, after they had kidnapped her and her son from the Rabali bus stop. It was testified that on the eve-

ning of the crime, the two accused approached the victim and her son at the bus stop and ordered them to leave with them. When they reached a certain house, the accused forced the window open and broke the door. The woman was raped in front of her son and released the following morning.

Apart from the jail sentence for rape, the two accused were also sen-tenced to two years’ imprisonment for the kidnapping of the mother and another two years for the kidnapping her son. They were also sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on the charge of housebreaking.

The sentences will run concur-rently.

Residents along Ruh Street in Louis Trichardt will soon have the opportu-nity to drive on a tarred road surface again without fearing damage to their vehicles.

Over the past couple of years, Ruh Street between Anderson and President Street had fallen into a state of total dis-repair. The worst part was between Krogh and Kruger Street, with most motorists

opting not to drive on this stretch of road at all because of countless potholes. More recently, Ruh Street next to Soutpansberg Primary was temporarily repaired, much to the delight of parents having to drop off and pick up their children from school.

The past week saw heavy machinery moving in and starting to remove the top layer of the road surface in Ruh Street completely. Municipal spokesperson Mr

Louis Bobodi confirmed on Tuesday that the rebuilding of Ruh Street forms part of the Makhado Municipality’s ongoing street refurbishment programme.

The rebuilding of Ruh Street will be conducted in phases. This entails only removing one part of the road surface to al-low single-lane traffic on the opposite side. Once the one side of the street has been finished, the other side will be tackled. The

The 100-year-old N’wabolomoxo Mujaji Maluleke was laid to rest at the Njulae family cemetery at Shir-ley village, near Elim, on Saturday.

Kokwana Nw’abolomoxo was born on 6 June 1914, at Nguswo Mahlahlu-vani at Chavani village. She was the first-born daughter of Bolomoxo and N’wamuxejhani. She was married to Msesenyani as his third wife.

She was blessed with five children - four daughters and a son.

During the funeral, Kokwana Nw’abolomoxo was described as a heroine, a people’s person, a work-aholic, and a grandmother of the nation. “One of her major roles was to bring up her grandchildren,” said her grandson, Mr Tinyiko Maluleke. “This was confirmed by her moving from Chavani village to Shirley vil-lage, where she had spent her last 21

years taking care of her grandchildren as well as her two daughters, Mphep-hu (81) and Tekisa (69).”

The funeral was also attended by dignitaries and notables such as Mr Richard Mabolani (House of Tradi-tional Leaders), Vonani wa ka Bila (poet and publisher) and Mr Patrick Shimange (Delloite).

Maluleke added that the commu-nity, friends and family were not mourning but celebrating the legacy left behind by Kokwana Nw’abo-lomoxo. “Ndzhaka ya kokwana ya haya emahlweni (Her legacy still continues),” he concluded.

K o k w a n a N w ’ a b o l o m o x o is survived by her three daugh-ters, seventeen grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Kokwana N’wabolomoxo Mujaji Maluleke leaves behind a legacy of love and care.

contractor appointed for the rebuilding of the street is Mukhatshane Construction and the completion date for the contract is September 2015.

Further good news for residents is that Ruh Street is not the only street earmarked for rebuilding or resurfac-ing. This project is but one to be financed out of the R13,7 million allocated for the upgrad-ing of streets in town. Other streets to receive attention, Bobodi said, include Celliers-, Wa-terbessie- and Tshirulu-luni Street.

Ruh Street in Louis Trichardt was abuzz this week with heavy machinery moving in to strip the top layers of this dilapidated road. The street is to be totally rebuilt, with a completion date of September this year.

Ten new emergency response vehicles for VhembeOfficials from the emergency services in Vhembe will in future be able to react faster to uncontrolled veld and infrastructural fires or road accidents.

This is thanks to the 10 new fire ser-vices response vehicles bought by the Vhembe District Municipality.

The acting general manager of com-munity services of the Vhembe District

Municipality, Ms Ntshavhiseni Demana, said they had spent R5 million on pur-chasing the Land Cruisers.

“Our district is very concerned about service delivery and we also want to ensure we respond to emergencies as quickly as possible. Some of our existing response vehicles are old and cannot reach their destination in time,” said

Demana. According to her, communities should

be aware that accidents can happen any time, without notice.

“We are still planning to procure more vehicles in order to beef up two newly opened fires stations, namely Vuwani in Makhado and Xigalo in Malamule-le.” She added that they will allocate

two vehicles each to the Ramushwana Fire Station in Thohoyan-dou, Vuwani, Xigalo and Makhado, while Mutale and the Obed Mashaba station in Musina will get one vehicle each.

During the hand-ing over of vehicles to various fire sta-tions at Thohoyan-dou on Monday, the executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, expressed the hope that the vehicles will make the work easier for the rescue officers and communities will get services in time.

Murder of woman highlights increasing crime in Thohoyandou areaThe recent killing of an innocent woman at Gol-gotha in Thohoyandou has caused an uproar in the Indian community, which has been a target for robberies and attacks in the recent past.

Ms Hazraben Zakir Patel (27) of Golgotha met her untimely death at the hands of robbers while at home with another woman and a three-year-old child. The three were surprised by three thugs, including a woman, who gained entry through the kitchen window.

The killing comes hardly four months after Lim-popo’s deputy police commissioner, Gen Benny Ntlemeza, has vowed to leave no stone unturned in tracking those involved in vicious crimes in Thohoyandou and areas surrounding Shayandima. He visited the area after an outcry by residents of Thohoyandou, more specifically the Indian com-

munity, who have been targets of armed robberies at their homes and their businesses.

Golgotha, the area where Ms Patel was killed, became notorious as the hunting ground of the man alleged to be the Univen serial killer, Ndivhuho Ntsieni. Ntsieni allegedly raped and killed four people in the area and is currently applying for bail in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that two men accompanied by a woman entered the house at around 10:00 through the back kitchen window. It is believed they sur-prised the two women in the house who were left alone while their husbands had gone to work. The trio is alleged to have demanded cash and other valuables from the women.

After ransacking the house, the robbers fled through the back again. One of the women managed

to untie herself and ran to a neighbour’s house and alerted them of their ordeal. The neighbours rushed to the house, only to find that the other woman had suffocated after her mouth had been tightly tied by the robbers.

The robbery and subsequent murder have again raised the issue of crime perpetrated against the Indian community.

Family member Mustak Patel said he was at work when he received a call from neighbours that something was amiss at home. “On rushing home, we tried to resuscitate our relative, but we failed. We took her to a local doctor, who pronounced her dead on arrival. We are so sad. We wonder why they had to kill her and did not just take whatever they wanted, because the women were defenceless. The women offered no resistance, but still she was

tired of crime. My son recently had his car hijacked in Gauteng and there has been many violent inci-dents in the Thohoyandou area. This is despite the campaigns we conduct in our area and the partner-ships we are forging with the local police,” he said.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo said three robbers entered the house after forcing the kitchen window open with a knife. “They tied the women up with pieces of clothing. The robbers made off with an amount of R30 000. We have opened a murder case and our investigations are ongoing,” said Malelo.

He said no arrests had been made so far. “We are appealing to the community to assist us in our investigations. Somebody out there saw or knows something, and those with information could give it to their nearest police station,” added Malelo.

preferred anonymity, said she was at home in the morning when she saw many people in the street. “I did not know that there had been a murder and rob-bery as these people always have weddings and other functions and this has become a common feature here. I thought there was some sort of celebration, but was saddened when I learnt of the incident,” she said.

Indian community leader and businessman Ayub Madina said crime had become one of the worrying factors in the Thohoyandou area and the whole country. “Our community is sick and

Businesswoman cleared from “ritual’ murder

New heritage foundation for the Lembas

A businesswoman who was accused of killing her employee for ritual purposes was recently cleared by the High Court in Thohoyandou.

Ms Sarah Letlalo of Matangari village was forced to fl ee from her home in July 2013 after she was accused of killing her employee, Tshinakaho Rambelani Khorommbi. The community destroyed Letlalo’s house and boycotted her business, a cafe and lounge, while accusing her of killing Khoro-mmbi (52).

Khorommbi was found dead in one of the rooms she was staying in at Letlalo’s home.

During that time, the community barricaded the main roads in the area while demanding the arrest of Letlalo, despite the police’s insistence that she was innocent. The situation calmed down after several meetings between the police and commu-

A group of clans who were dissatisfi ed by the lack of trans-parency and running of affairs in the Lemba Cultural Asso-ciation (LCA) has officially formed an organisation of their own, Lemba Heritage Foundation.

The event was held at Bhuba Lodge near Elim a fortnight ago.

According to prof Taka-lani Madima, the foundation comprises 12 clans, who are the Bhuba, Hamisi (Hamese), Seremane (Seremani), Sarefu, Sadiki (Sathekge), Ngavi (Zu-ngunde, Dumah), Thobakgale (Thovhakale), Mange, Bakali, Hadzhii, Mhani, and Tshiny-aladzi.

He indicated that, when they questioned the “lack of trans-parency and accountability” in the LCA, they were instantly and “[derogatorily] dubbed the Group of 24. “Our being Lembas was also brought into question,” said Madima. “There was some suggestion and innuendo that we were not Lembas. To what end, we have still not been able to fathom.”

Madima emphasised that the

formation of the Lemba Heritage Foundation was fully legitimate. “Organisations are founded or formed for a variety of reasons,” he said.

“The founding of the Lemba Heritage Foundation has the support of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which makes provision for freedom of association and assembly of like-minded individuals pursuing a common purpose.” He further said that there are without a doubt many more such organisations that cater for the interests of the Jewish people in South Africa. “All of them exist in harmony and mutual respect, despite the tensions, real or imagined, that might exist between them,” he said. “I accept that, as Lembas, we are not a homogeneous peo-ple. We have different spiritual and physical needs and wants. It is almost impossible for one organisation to cater for all of our needs and wants.” According to Madima, the true history of the organisation of the Lemba people in South Africa is still to be accurately captured.

“In that narrative, the role

played by the Lemba Cultural Association will feature promi-nently,” he addressed members of the LHF.

“It is incumbent upon you, and all of us, to write that narrative. If we do not, others will do it for us. All we shall be capable of doing will be to complain that the hunter is writing the narrative of the hunted.”

LHF’s cordinator, Mr Gabriel Malaka, said that the organi-sation’s programmes were de-signed to return the Lemba to the laws and traditions of Judaism after 4000 years of isolation. “We are eager to reconnect and expand our knowledge, study our history and adopt the customs and ways of the Torah and imple-ment these into our daily rituals and lives in intention, thought and action,” Malaka said.

Mr Advocate Mfandaedza and Mrs Hilda Mfandaedza from Zimbabwe said they were happy to witnesss the emergence of such an instrumental organisation in the Lemba history. “I am glad to have attended the occasion and to be part of the foundation,” said Mr Mfandedza.

nity structures. Sello Mbedzi (21) was later arrested in Gauteng and was linked to the rape and murder of the de-ceased. According to the indictment, the accused went to Letlalo’s home to steal. While there, he was surprised by the

deceased, who was a helper in the homestead.“He forcefully had sexual intercourse with her

before he stabbed her several times with a knife and screwdriver. After killing the deceased, he went into the house and stole money and a cell phone belonging to the owner of the homestead. The victim was later found dead, and the cause of death was sharp-force trauma to the chest,” says the indictment.

Mbedzi allegedly later broke into a shop and stole airtime vouchers, cartons of cigarettes, to-bacco and watches to the total value of R18 810.

Judge E Makgoba sentenced Mbedzi to 20 years’ imprisonment for murder, three years for housebreaking and another fi ve years for breaking into a business.

The prosecutor, Adv Ratshilumela Makhera, said that he was happy with the sentences. Mutale police spokesperson W/O Tshilidzi Nyambeni says he was happy that an arrest had been made in the case that led to the successful prosecution and sentencing. He appealed to the community, however, to be patient with the police, so that they could do their work without interference from anyone.

Ms Letlalo says she was happy that she had been cleared of the malicious allegations that had been levelled against her.

Struggle veteran “Mr Man” laid to rest

By Kaizer Nengovhela

“Report all incidents of crime” - MasuthaDuring an imbizo at Madom-bidzha on Wednesday, com-munities around Sinthumule/Kutama were urged to report all incidents of crime to the police and to avoid a situation where they support criminals.

The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Adv Micheal Masutha, urged the community to stop buying sto-len goods, stolen cars, car parts and even a small thing like a packet of sugar as they lead to serious crimes. “We need more involvement of the communities in issues of policing and in the fight against crime,” Masutha said.

“All our actions and policies are aimed towards achieving the

goal of creating a united, non-ra-cial, non-sexist, democratic, peaceful, secure and prosperous South Africa. The success of any operation depends on the active participation of the ordi-nary citizens,” he said.

Masutha urged the com-munity to report any criminal activity, including the illegal possession of and dealing in fire-arms and ammunition. “While the rights of all citizens need to be protected as entrenched in our Constitution, the rights of criminals must not supersede those of law-abiding citizens,” he added. Masutha said he was aware of police officers who refused to attend to community members who visited the sta-

tions. He assured the commu-nity that officers who did not want to work would be removed from the police service. “I am appealing to the community to report all officers who ill-treat them, so that we can deal with them,” he said.

Thovhele Khosi Vho- Rudza-ni Sinthumule requested the officials at all police stations to give all victims and complain-ants the space to voice incidents of abuse without prejudice. “All we want is a crime-free village where one can sleep outside with open gates, without fear of being attacked by thugs. We are now urging all residents to notify their neighbours if they are away from home,” he said.

Community mem-ber Ms Masindi Mu-dodzwa said the com-munity was fed-up with crime and they just wanted to put the message across to the justice system. “We are tired of the anarchy caused by thugs. We are here to make a statement to the authorities that they should not even consider giving bail to suspects. Thugs have been terrorising us for a long time and each time they have committed crime, they come back to the com-munity.”

Min Michael Masutha and his spokesperson Mr Mthunzi Mhaga arrive at the event.

The best physical science teacher in the country, Mr Thomas Mudau of Jonathan Mushaathama High (right), received R50 000, a new car, an iPad, a cell phone and a trip for his achievement. He was jubilant last Wednesday when the new vehicle was delivered to him. With him in the photo is a fellow teacher, Mr Tshililo Munyadziwa.

The family of the late Maxwell Nemadzivhanani listen as the MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Mr Jerry Ndou, speaks at the funeral. Also in the photograph are members of the legislature, ANC cadres and former Premier Cassel Mathale.

The deputy chairperson of the ANC in Limpopo and MEC for Public Works and Infra-structure, Mr Jerry Ndou, said there was a need to arrange a “cleansing ceremony” in the Vhembe region, as cadres were always dying.

“It is not so long ago, we buried comrade and MK cad-re former MEC for education Thembi Nwedamutswu, and it is still fresh in our minds that we buried another cadre, Minister Collins “Animal” Chabane. A week ago, we buried veteran and former UDM founding member Magweja Mphaphuli and today we are burying yet another son of the soil, Maxwell “Mr Man” Nemadzivhanani.”

He said when the history of the struggle for the freedom and emancipation of the people of South Africa, and in particular blacks, was finally written, the name of “Mr Man” would be

featured prominently on top. “Nemadzivhanani was not a Mafikizolo in the struggle for liberation. He didn’t join the struggle because he failed mat-ric. He was not power hungry,” added Ndou.

MEC Ndou, who was joined by former Premier Cassel Math-ale, the MEC for the treasury, Rudolf Phala, and the mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Grace Mahosi, was speaking on Saturday outside Thohoyandou during the funeral of Nemadzivhanani (59). He died on 1 April in the MediClinic in Polokwane after a long illness.

He resigned as member of the Limpopo Legislature after the May 2014 elections and was pursuing with his own business at the time of his death. His brother, Khuliso, described him as “true revolution comrade, a seasoned politician and not a tenderpre-neur, as many cadres are known nowadays. He was a servant of

the people; he loved and lived politics.” Nemadzivhanani was born in Vhufuli village out-side Thohoyandou. He attended school in Vhufuli Primary and Tshivhase Secondary and passed matric in 1976.

He joined the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) in 1975 and in 1977 he left the country and received political asylum in Bo-tswana. He concurrently joined the Azanian People’s Liberation Army (APLA).

He returned in 1992 and served in many PAC structures and joined the Limpopo Legislature in 2000. He joined the ANC in 2004 and served as member for the Limpopo legislature for almost 10 years. He is sur-vived by his wife, Tshililo, four sons Madzanga, Muthundinne, Shakalanga, and Khakhathi and daughter Velly, his brother, Khuliso, and two sisters, Lufuno and Maitele.

Temporary bridge for villageThe lack of services in communi-ties has become a major challenge and, according to many rural residents, they are suffering as the government continues to make promises which, in most cases, are never fulfi lled.

One rural community has come with a solution that, if followed by others, would fast-track service delivery and improve their living conditions without having to wait for the government.

Concerned residents at Maungani Zavhavha, or Copper village, which is at the doorstep of Thohoyandou, are settled between two rivers. When it rains, the residents are on their own island and have to travel many kilometres to the main bridge to catch transport to school and also to work. This has brought untold misery to residents, some of whom are forced not to go to school or miss work.

They have made representations to the local munici-pality, “but all we got are promises,” frustrated residents are saying.

Tired of waiting and empty promis-es, the communi-ty recently took it upon themselves to build a small bridge; they now have a temporary bridge which can also accomodate a car. The leader of the group, Mr Thomas Mathabi (47), said residents were tired of wait-ing for the govern-ment to build them a bridge.

He indicated that

he used his bakkie to carry rocks and soil that they used to build the tem-porary bridge.

“We cannot wait for the govern-ment when we are suffering. There are things that we can do for ourselves, and maybe the government will real-ize that they are not doing enough for the community,” he said.

One of the volunteers, Mr Phineas Khalushi (65), who is a retired prison warder, said the bridge would make a big difference in the community. “Students, workers and the commu-nity will no longer have to travel long distances to catch public transport. We are also going to cut the long grasses in the area, so that all will feel safe when using this shortcut,” said Khalushi.

Volunteers, busy offl oading rocks and soil to be used in the building of the temporary bridge.

While residents of the region held Easter weekend celebrations, thieves capitalised on this and embarked on breaking into a school, church and various homes.

At least 16 laptop computers were stolen from the principal’s offi ce at Muhadini Combined School in the early hours of 4 April. The unknown suspects damaged the CCTV camera above the hall entrance and proceeded to break the window into the principal’s offi ce. The burglar proofi ng was damaged and the thieves entered the offi ce.

“We found the offi ce ransacked, the monitor camera machine missing and all 16 laptops which had been in the offi ce gone,” said Mr Daniel Leshaba. “We still fail to understand how thieves stole from the school when there was a security guard on duty.”

The suspects also walked away with the CCTV unit.

Leshaba said it was not the fi rst time that thieves had stolen from the school. “They stole our four big speakers last year and we recovered them hidden in the bushes outside the school yard,” he said. “It is high time that we hold an imbizo against crime to fi nd ways for the community members to work with the police in the war against crime.”

The loss and damage has been provi-sionally estimated at R80 000. No arrests have been made so far.

In another incident, thieves broke into the Elim Episcopal Presbyterian Church in South Africa, where they walked away with a laptop and other valuables. The damage is estimated at R11 000.

In October last year, the Ozias Davhana Secondary School’s pupils and members of staff were shocked when they dis-covered that the thieves had stolen the school’s 22 laptops. The case was reported to the police, but neither identifi cation of possible suspects nor arrests have been made yet. The principal for the Ozias Davhana Secondary School said people who were in the evil business of stealing

from the school were in fact stealing from the pupils. “These pupils need to use com-puters for various subjects and for Internet access when they need to do research,” he said. “But then, some people do not see it like that.”

The spokesperson for the Waterval police, Const Cynthia Ndou, confi rmed all the cases and said the police were busy investigating. “It is sad and unimaginable that thieves are targeting churches and schools,” Ndou said. “We strongly urge members of the community to come forward with information reagarding these cases.

The principal, Mr Daniel Leshaba, holds cables which were left when thieves stole the CCTV machine.

R64m for training of accounting students

A new community hall for Vhulaudzi

The government has invested R64 million in the University of Venda over four years to en-sure that the university receive their South African Institute of Charted Accountants (SAICA) chartered accountant accredi-tation.

It came through a partnership between Univen, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the Bankseta.

“Since we became partners last year, the Univen students have produced good results,” said Ms Chantly Mulder of SAICA during a recent media briefing at Polokwane. She discussed the benefits of the Thuthuka busary fund for rural students and said that they wanted to provide a platform where students could study and reach their potential,

The community of Vhulaudzi was over the moon when Ko-matiland Forests handed over a new, modern hall to the value of R3 million to them on Saturday.

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Gratitude Mag-wanishe, who said that there was still a need to improve the lives of people living in rural areas. He told members of the community to protect and maintain the hall.

“Community members should preserve water and not allow children to leave water taps run-ning,” said Magwanishe.

The CEO of the South African Forests Company, Ms Nomkhita Mona, said they had received a request for the construction of the community hall three years ago through the joint community forum of Ha-Radzilani Phadzi-

ma. She said Safcol conducted a feasibility study to test if the need was critical and the degree of the impact it would have on the community.

“The result of our study re-vealed that there was indeed a dire need for the hall as the community didn’t have a decent or conducive venue to hold meet-ings and events. We also took into consideration that there is a need for government departments such as Home Affairs, Health and SASSA to render basic services to the community in the hall,” she added.

“The construction began in March 2013 by a local contrac-tor (Anolanga Engineering CC) and created 19 jobs for the local people. We also constructed an external ablution block, drilled and equipped a borehole, in-stalled electricity and furnished

the hall with 500 chairs. It can accommodate approximately 1000 people,” she said.

“In our social responsibility programmes, we have sponsored a tractor and farming equipment to the people of Maelula. We have trained 20 young people to manufacture desks at our Timba-dola Sawmill and, to date, 1 000 desks have been manufactured at the centre. A hydroponic tunnel and a borehole were handed to the community of Mapila.”

She added that the borehole they had drilled for the Maguada community was serving about 200 households. “A nursery, hydroponic tunnels, borehole and seedlings were also provided to the Tshakhuma community. Safcol provided beehives to the Songozwi Bee-Keeping Project, a pick-up truck and training,” said Mona.

knowing that their education was of the best quality. ”We want to restore the profession of chartered accountants all over the country and produce responsible leaders,” she said.

Mulder added that UJ was a critical partner in the project and provided strategic support and guidance to Univen staff.

The partnership involving the Bankseta, Univen, UJ and Saica will enable the university to offer a BCom (Accounting) degree, and maintain teaching and learn-ing standards that are consistent with the demands of the chartered accountancy profession.

Mulder indicated that the proj-ect started in January 2014, with a group of 50 first-year students, many of whom came from Lim-popo. Students will study for a

four-year BCom (Accounting) degree at Univen, and a certifi-cate in the theory of accounting (CTA) at UJ. It is envisaged that the project will assist 350 students at the end of this four-year period.

She said that Saica want-ed Univen, as a rural-based institution, to gain the same recognition as students at other universities. “We currently have 148 candidates at Univen who are beneficiaries of Thuthuka. We provide students with accom-modation, textbook fees, pocket money, tuition fees and support activities such as tutorials. We want to ensure that their needs are taken care of, so that they can concentrate on their studies with-out financial worries,” Mulder explained.

“Support the residents with disabilities”

Mr Thanyani Mudau from the Makhado Parliamentary Constituency (right) views the handiwork created by members of the Fhatuwani Disability Centre.

Stakeholders interacted with the people with disabilities.

The manager of a centre for people with disabilities at Mulima Tshitale, Mr Edward Hlungwani, said that the cen-tres for people with disabil-ities could do and achieve more if they were supported appropriately.

Hlungwani, who oversees Fhatuwani Disability Centre, was speaking during a recently disability campaign, held at the Tshitale soccer grounds.

“We need to make people from all communities aware of the rights of people with disabil-ities,” he said. “These people are not on their own. We care for them; we give them total support all the time. And we need your help, as government departments and businesspeo-ple, to fully realise our godly mandate to care for people with disabilities in our centre.”

The organisation was formed in 1998 after the community was shocked by the vicious rape

of a female disabled minor by a family member. After that in-cident, the community realised that there was a need to create a centre or organisation as haven for people with disabilities.

“The organisation fights against the abuse, neglect and stigma attached to people with disabilities,” Hlungwani said.

The different stakeholders, such as representatives from SASSA, Department of Health, Vuthlari Disability Centre, Mbavhalelo Disability Centre, and the local police, encouraged people with disabilities not to allow the poverty in their homes to drag them down.

The administrator of the Makhado Parliamentary Con-stituency, Mr Thanyani Mudau, said that, as the government, they fully supported the centre for people with disabilities, home-based centres and other community-based projects. “We know that people with disabili-

ties have amazing talents, and as such we encourage them to be part of centres for people with disabilities, where their talents and abilities can be supported,” he said.

Chief Vho-Tshikhuthula Mulima indicated that, as a traditional leader, he was com-mitted to working closely with different stakeholders in fight-ing the abuse of people with disabilities. “My office has set aside eight hectares of land that will be used to develop projects such as Fhatuwani Disability Centre, Mulima home-based care, an old-age home and a library,” he said. “People who want to assist in developing our area must not shy away from approaching us with ideas. We need to create employment as a way of fighting poverty and crime in our communities.”

The campaign is also sup-ported by Premjee & Son Cash and Carry, and Elim SuperSpar.

The junior team of Benny’s Care will represent Vhembe in the provincial finals of the Under 12 Danone Nations Cup in Polokwane tomorrow (Saturday). They were crowned Vhembe champions on Tuesday when they beat Bashasha Primary 7-0 and Lotsha Primary 4-1 at the Bungeni Stadium. The coach of the team, Mr Mr Mbishi Mokwena, said that they had been participating in the tournament for a number of years, but had never reached the national level. “We are situated in a rural area with soccer as the only extra mural activity on offer, and we use the sport to keep the children active and off the streets. We also use the sport to highlight the importance of staying healthy. If we win the first game, we will gain enough confidence to excell in the upcoming games. We came prepared and ready to fight,” Mokwena said.

Leopards aim for league championship

Difficult road for Limpopo’s Baroka

Seven Stars too good for Rising Stars

Now that Black Leopards are out of the Nedbank Cup com-petition, their focus is on the league title. This was confirmed by the team’s head coach, Mr Zeca Marques.

Leopards were booted out of the Nedbank Cup by Vasco da Gama, who beat them 3-2 at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Sat-urday. Marques confirmed that kissing goodbye to the Nedbank Cup was a bitter pill to swallow, saying his aim was to win the cup and promote the team to the Absa Premiership Division at the end of the season.

Saturday’s defeat was the first for Leopards under the guidance of Marques, who joined the club

four months ago. He guided Leopards to 10 victories and a draw before losing last Saturday. According to him, they will now focus on the league title and put the Nedbank defeat out of their minds.

He reiterated the fact that they will make sure that they win all their remaining league matches and see how high they can go on the log standings. Lidoda Duvha are now lying in the fourth spot on the log, with Lamontville Golden Arrows, Jomo Cosmos and Thanda Royal Zulu above them.

Marques stated that his aim is to win an outright promotion as it is something that is still within

their reach. Asked as to whether they were gearing up to take part in the promotional play-offs, he said that he would start to think about the promotional play-offs if they should fail to gain out-right promotion at the end of the season.

Black Leopards still have five matches to play before the activ-ities for the current season come to an end. They will travel to Thembisa, where they will lock horns with Highlandspark at the Makhulong Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Their other remain-ing matches are against Santos (home), Milano United (home), African Warriors (home) and FC Cape Town (away).

Baroka FC jeopardised their chances of booking a place in the promotional play-offs at the end of the season, following their 0-2 defeat at the hands of Jomo Cosmos in their NFD match at the Vaal University of Technology Stadium on Saturday.

Baroka soon realized that it was not their day when they squandered two early chances. First it was their lethal striker, Mpho Kutumela, who received

a neat pass from Jerry Kekana at the edge of the penalty box and hesitated for far too long to unleash, until he lost possession. Kekana was to blame moments later. He could not believe his eyes when his volley missed the target by inches.

The victory means that Jomo Cosmos are on track for the league title.

They are in the second spot, only a point behind Lamont-ville Golden Arrows. One of

the league title chasers, Thanda Royal Zulu, were beaten 1-2 by Milano United at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

Santos were walloped 0-4 by Highlandspark at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. African Warriors beat Maluti FET Col-lege 4-2 at the Charles Mopedi Stadium at Phuthaditshaba, while Garankuwa United taught Wit-bank Spurs a lesson by beating them 4-1 at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria.

Rendani Ndouvhada, one of Louis Trichardt High School's star athletes, excelled at the provincial athletics event held in Rustenburg during the school holidays. He obtained a third place in the 400 mH and also qualified for participation in the national event.

Mukondeni Seven Stars Net-ball Club beat Rising Stars from Capricorn 18-14 in a league match played at Louis Trichardt on Saturday.

The league matches were divided into three groups of five teams each. Other re-sults are: Thunder Girls (Waterberg) 34, Nkow-ankowa City Ramblers (Mopani) 23; University of Limpopo 30, Lufule 26; Lulekani Cheetas 28, Diesel Dust 14.

Thunder Girls top Stream A with 16 points, followed by Nkonkowa City Remblers with 10 and Mukondeni Seven Stars with 8 points in third position. In Stream B, Diesel and Dust are on top with 16 points, Unilim is second with 12 points and Lulekani Cheetas third, also with 12 points.

The provincial netball coordinator, Ms Rose Malotane, said that their aim was to help young girls to showcase their talent by developing them from grassroots. "When you go to our

villages and schools, there is too much emphasis on the develop-ment of soccer."

She added that the association wanted to keep the young girls away from all forms of mischief. “These girls are our children and

we love and care for them. We want to groom them, so that they can participate at both provincial and national level.”

Tomorrow, the league matches will be played in Polokwane, starting at 10:00.

Flying high are, from left to right, Mapule Mahlatse of Rising Stars, Debra Masingi (middle) and Ntsako Baloyi.

Please take note that, Mr Willem Johannes Boshoff (Werner), formerly a sales consultant for the Elegant Group, is no longer part of any of the companies in the group.

Norman Managa of Iyarunga (left) and Shumani Ravhandalala run for possession of the ball.

Rhulani Maringa of Stars controls the ball, with Ashean Monyeolete on the alert behind him.

Oscar Stars donate pointsThe current log leaders of Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators' League Stream E, Makhitha Oscar Stars, bit the dust when they lost 2-1 to Makhitha Iyarunga in their local derby at Makhitha on Sunday.

The match was attended by more than 3 000 spectators from around Sinthumule/Kutama. Stars took the game to their opponents in the first 20 minutes. Their speedy forward, Hector Ledwaba, let them down by shooting aimlessly at the goal finish.

Iyarunga's diminutive kingpin, Ashean Monyeleote, beat the offside trap and faced the stranded keeper, Pasca Mukona, but lost possession at the goal finish. Rhulani Maringa, the Stars midfielder, had his chance in the 30th minute after receiving a brilliant

pass from Sydney Luvhengo. He shot aimlessly from close range and the ball went wide.

The referee flashed the first yellow card in the 35th minute. Given Ndou of Iyarunga obstructed Takalani Mbekwa.

Stars' only goal came in the 38th minute. Thusani “Mbevha” Luvhengo beat the opposing keeper, Elikana Nemabaka, after dribbling past two defenders in a row.

Iyarunga equalised through Ashean Monyeleote in 56th minute and their winning goal came two minutes later. Norman Managa's long-range ground cutter left the keeper of Stars, Pasca Mukona, flat-footed. He was later injured and replaced by Gift Rambuwani.

Black Leopards were booted out 3-2 in the quarterfi nals of the prestigious Nedbank Cup by Vasco da Gama at a packed Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.

The Capetonians showed no respect for the local guys and matched them pound for pound in all departments. Roggert Nyundu of Leopards, their top goal scorer at the moment, could not display his normally impressive skills as Denis Mokoena tight-ly marked him.

The home side’s Meschack Maphangule came close to scoring in the fi fth minute, but his attempt missed by a whisker. Rog-gert Nyundu later unleashed a powerful shot from a side piece from 25 meters out and he beat the keeper of Vasco, Steven Hoffman, to give his team a 1-0 lead. The boys from Cape Town outfi t approached the second half like a house on fi re, with their midfi elders distributing excellent passes to the strikers. Ndiviwe Mdabuka of Vasco scored his team’s equalising

goal in the 74th minute. The two teams played to a draw in 90 minutes and went to extra time. The Leopards’ fans thought that they had done enough when Morgan Shivambu finished off a header from Lebogang Mabotja. Their celebration was, however, cut short when a brilliant goal by Zeka Enver Karkee killed Leopards’ fi ghting spirit. Mbulelo Wambi of Vasco eventually broke the hearts of the home team when he blasted in a rocket from a free kick.

Out of the Nedbank CupDenis Mokoena of Vasco and Roggert

Nyundu fi ght for the ball.

Black Leopards lost 2-3 to Vasco da Gama in the quarter fi nals of the prestigous Nedbank Cup on Saturday.
