BrouchureDescription: As a final project, I needed to create a professional brochure using three of the big Adobe software programs: InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. I also needed to create an original logo and body copy.

Program(s): Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop

Date Completed: 6 December 2015

Course/Instructor: Visual Communications, Com 130/Emily Kunz

Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images.

Process: I first used Adobe InDesign to set up my brochure. It is an offset design (not folded in the middle). I then used Microsoft Word to create body copy or text for the brochure. This text consisted of information about the company or program that I was designing for. In this case, Sky Sailing Innovation. I borrowed Sky Sailing from a band as well as their water color images for this assignment.

I then used Photoshop to cut out the image of the watercolor cloud that I used on the front and back cover as well as on the inside of the brochure. I also used Photoshop to make a cut out of the paper airplane that is f lying around the brochure.

I used Illustrator to create the SSI logo, the title text on the front, the “Start Innovating Today!” text on the back, and the title on the inside of the brochure.

I added all the elements to InDesign to create a good flow and presentation of information. I saved the document as a .pdf file using the Adobe pdf print preset.

WebpageDescription: Create a web page using a previously created. Use colors and elements from the logo to create unity and repetition.

Program(s): Adobe Illustrator, Notepad++, and W3 Schools validator

Date Completed: 22 November 2015

Course/Instructor: Visual Communications, Com 130/Emily Kunz

Objectives: Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and CSS. Identify hex colors.

Process: I chose the logo I created a few weeks ago from three. I opened my logo Illustrator file to isolate this logo. I opened a new document to project specifications ( 300 -500 px) to save for the web. I then opened my .html file in Notepad++ to add my logo to the html code using the <img> tag. I added other descriptive information to the html about the logo. I used a cascading style sheet (CSS) to make the background, header, footer, and body copy as well as other elements on my webpage conform to the logo design. I opened my webpage using internet explorer to confirm placement of elements as well as color. I also used w3 schools validator for my html and css code to make sure that there were no fatal errors.

StationaryDescription: Create a letterhead and business card using original logo design.

Program(s): Adobe In Design and Illustrator

Date Completed: 7 November 2015

Course/Instructor: Visual Communications, Com 130/Emily Kunz

Objectives: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.

Process: I created two logos using text and the direct selection tool in Adobe Illustrator. The first uses all the parts of the name if the business and the second uses just the face I created using the double “o” and the “s”. After saving the logos, I opened a new two page InDesign document and added the logos to the first page.I decided that I wanted the logo with the name of the business in the top left corner and the own or person information in the top right corner. I scaled the text logo down to fit in line with the personal information on the right.

I then used an enlarged image of the face logo as a watermark in the letter copy of the document. On the second page of the InDesign document, I again added both forms of the logo to two 3.5 inch by 2 inch rectangles to signify business card size and shape. I used the face logo for one side with teal added for more color. On the other side, I used the text logo as well as the individual’s information.

LogosDescription: Create an original logo for either a real or fictitious business.

Program(s): Adobe Illustrator

Date Completed: 31 October 2015

Course/Instructor: Visual Communications, Com 130/Emily Kunz

Objectives: Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them. Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.

Process: In the end, I decided to create a logo for myself. I wanted to show some of my personality in the logo. I used Adobe Illustrator to put words and images together to create something that I thought was pretty close to my own style. I made a simple face that is similar to mine own outline to replace the letter “e” in walker. I thought this would create more interest there as well as create lost and found.

MontageDescription: Create a work using two or more images to create a meaning full religious montage.

Program(s): Adobe Photoshop

Date Completed: 24 October 2015

Course/Instructor: Visual Communications, Com 130/Emily Kunz

Objectives: Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.

Process: I chose images I liked and would work with my message. I downloaded the largest image I could of these photos. I used Photoshop to take the parts I wanted from the candle. I then added the candle section and the image of the scriptures to the foreground of the beacon or lighthouse image. From there I added vibrancy to the lighthouse, used the brush tool to create a montage effect, added typography, and a photo filter to make the colors more closely match my color scheme.

Photo DesignDescription: For this project I needed to find a subject to photograph then design using that image.

Program(s): Adobe Photoshop

Date Completed: 18 October 2015

Course/Instructor: Visual Communications, Com 130/Emily Kunz

Objectives: Learn basic photography skills. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing). Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process: I really liked the part of the song I chose. So I found a star that I had hanging around my house and took a photograph. I then opened it into Adobe Photoshop to add depth to the color. I then added other stars in a monochromatic color scheme to add interest and repetition. Once that was done, I added typography with the section of the lyric I chose.

Event Ad Description: I used only Microsoft Word to create this event ad to become familiar with the design tools found there. I became more familiar with how to scan a good, usable image with my scanner

Program(s): Microsoft Word

Date Completed: 11 October 2015

Course/Instructor: Visual Communications, Com 130/Emily Kunz

Objectives: Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process: I looked through the National Geographic Magazine to find an image/photo that I wanted to scan. I used a Cannon Multi series to make a high resolution scan of the photograph. I opened a new Word document and opened the high resolution image into the document. I added a background to compensate for the size of the image (it did not bleed on all sides). I added text and changed the typeface.

FlierDescription: For this particular project, my classmates and I were given the task of creating a grayscale f lier for a “Graduate Leadership Conference” with information about the conference, the company, the company’s logo, and an image. From this information, four sketches were made. Of these four sketches, only one was digitalized and finalized. I have included both my sketches and my final f lier draft.

Program(s): Adobe InDesign

Date Completed: 3 October 2015

Course/Instructor: Visual Communications, Com 130/Emily Kunz

Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic f lier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process: I used Microsoft Word to help me edit the text copy for grammatical and spelling errors. I then used Adobe InDesign to create my flier. I wanted the design to be simple and open: as much white space as I could manage. I also wanted there to be a good balance and visual hierarchy.
