The temperatures are warm, the water is cool and 12 miles of beaches are ready to be enjoyed. There are many ways to explore our boot-shaped island, where over 50 miles of bike paths extend out in every direction, and there’s no better time to do it. So wheth-er you want to rent a bike, take a kayaking

adventure through the lagoons at Palmetto Dunes or explore the creeks by boat and learn about the wildlife that live on our little gem of the Lowcountry, just be sure to stop and enjoy the beautiful subtropical environment all around you. On Hilton Head Island, you won’t just find all kinds of water-front restaurants serving up some of the freshest seafood along the coast, but also a variety of shops just steps away from the water. Coligny, Harbour Town, South Beach and Shelter Cove are some of our favorite places to go, where shopping, dining and water sports collide. At these hot spots, everyone’s sure to have a fun time paddle boarding or jetskiing, going on dolphin tours or fishing charters, eating out or shopping for special souvenirs to remember their trip.

July is certainly an exciting time on the Island, with HarbourFest and Summer Jams bringing live music, fireworks and all kinds of activities to Shelter Cove every Tuesday night during the summer and a really special show for the Fourth of July. From comedy shows to live outdoor concerts, fireworks and festivals to a special summer production of “Big Fish the Musical” and “Always … Patsy Cline” by the Savannah Summer Theatre Institute, there is bound to be something to please everyone. Go check out our Calendar of Events to find out some of the best things to do this month!

In this issue of Island Events, find out what kind of crabs are roaming the beaches with Jessie Renew and learn about the Atlantic sharpnose shark with Kathleen McMenamin. Also in this issue, Captain Miles Altman shares his tips on how to catch sil-ver king and blacktip sharks, while Georgene Mortimer explains how to pair wine with shrimp. But that’s not all! Katie Hatfield gives us the scoop on the trendiest beach accessories and helps us swim in style in this issue.

We hope all of our listings are helpful in guiding you to some of the very best that the island has to offer. As always, the best of the Lowcountry and the Coastal Empire is just a click away at hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. It’s there you’ll find digital copies of all of our publications and a wealth of information about what to do while you’re here. All of our websites are accessible via smartphone, so you can find the best shops, restaurants and activities no matter where you are.

We hope you enjoy your time on Hilton Head Island and come back to see us again next year!

How to Pair Wine with Shrimp

On Hilton Head Island, we love our shrimp! Our fresh local shrimp are some

of the tastiest in the country, so choosing the perfect wine companion is key. While shrimp’s unique texture and delicate flavor must be respected, it is more versatile when it comes to wine pairing than most other seafood or shellfish. Shrimp can be prepared in a myriad of ways, so preparation really is the key to the perfect wine selection.

Classic Lowcountry shrimp and grits, is the first meal that comes to mind. However, almost no two chefs prepare the dish the same way. For a mildly spiced version that is all about the cheesy grits, try a Spanish Albariño. A spicier variety with spicy Cajun sausage and peppers needs a bolder wine, such as a Gewürztraminer or a German Riesling. The strong fruity and floral flavors of these wines will take the dish to a new level.

Another favorite amongst Islanders and visitors is the simple but mouth watering golden fried shrimp. Just like a squeeze of lemon or a dip in a spicy cocktail sauce, a bold and citrusy Sauvignon Blanc would be the perfect mate. Try one from Australia or New Zealand.

Garlic loves white wine, so if you are having a scampi or any other shrimp dish with garlic and butter, choose anything but a big oaky chardon-nay. Now, a creamy shrimp and pasta dish can pair well with a lightly oaked chardonnay, especially if the dish contains cheese. If red sauce is involved, you can even venture into a dry rosé or even a light Pinot Noir from a cold climate like Washington State.

If you like spicy and flavorful shrimp dishes such as in Asian curries, stick to a fruity Pinot Grigio from Washington or Oregon. A semi-dry Riesling or a Viognier will be most enjoyable

By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

selections as well. Complex fruity and floral wines such as these really add nice complimentary notes to heavier spiced curry dishes.

While there are so many different ways to prepare shrimp, our sweet and flavorful local shrimp is at its best when most sim-ply prepared – perfectly steamed in the shell and served either hot or cold. The wine must allow the delicious subtle flavor of the shrimp to shine, so the wine must be dry and neutral. A classic Pinot Grigio from Italy will be a fantastic accent with-out overpowering the shrimp. But I must say, on a hot summer day nothing beats bubbles. A cold bottle of dry or extra dry Champagne would be perfect.

The perfect bottle of wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Road. Store and tasting hours are Monday-Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wine Flights and Cheese are available from Monday-Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. A Wine & Cheese Happy Hour is offered Monday-Friday starting at 4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com.

Harbour Town Lighthouse

Rising 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and framing the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links...

The Harbour Town Lighthouse, which was com-pleted in 1970, was the first privately-financed lighthouse built since the early 1800s.

Nicknamed “Fraser’s Folly,“ Charles Fraser, the visionary developer of The Sea Pines Resort, believed a distinctive landmark, along with a pro fessional golf tournament, would arouse interest in the fledgling seaside community.

As usual, Fraser was right, and today the candy-striped, hexagonal structure has become synonymous with Hilton Head Island.

Rising 93 feet above the Calibogue Sound and framing the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links, the red-and-white striped lighthouse guides golfers off the tee. The back drop for one of golf’s most picturesque fin ish ing holes, #18 was once part of the $1 million Kodak Challenge, a cele bra tion of “the beautiful holes and mem orable moments in golf.”

Panoramic views of the Harbour Town Yacht Basin and Golf Links, the Liberty Oak, the Calibogue Sound and Daufuskie Island, are just one reason to climb the 114 stairs to the top of the lighthouse. Along the way, the Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum offers a

self-guided “climb through time” with displays and artifacts showcas ing vari-ous stages of Hilton Head history.

Offering a unique, “elevated” shopping experience, The Top of the Lighthouse Shop fea tures over 2,000 items, including Crystal World light house figurines, Harbour Lights collectibles, Christmas orna ments, Annaleece high quality fashion jewelry, Trollbeads and local art and photography.

While enjoying the view, wave to family and friends via the webcam or visit harbourtownlighthouse.com to zoom in on the yacht basin, the 18th hole of the Harbour Town Golf Links or the Liberty Oak, where family favorite Gregg Russell has entertained generations of visitors for more than three decades during the summer.

The Island’s best-known land mark is also avail-able for special events, including mem o rable weddings, intimate parties and corporate functions. Call for details and reservations.

The Harbour Town Lighthouse is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m.-Sundown. Admission is $4 per person, free for ages 5 and under. Accommo dat ing up to 40 people, the lighthouse may also be re served for private parties and func tions. (843) 671-2810, (866) 305-9814 or harbourtownlighthouse.com.

We all know what styles of bathing suits are out there: one-piece, two-piece and tankinis. But lately, several stores and designers have been changing it up with “bandage strap” swimsuits. While techni-cally a one piece, the bandage strap swimsuit covers just about as much skin as a bikini, but has straps of fabric that con-nect the top and bottom for a sexier look. With so many things to look at, this type of swimsuit is a full outfit in and of itself, with no need for extra accessories.

But other beach outfits need a little extra flair and one way to dress it up is with the trendy temporary gold, silver and black tattoos. Temporary tattooed jewelry is waterproof and can be found at any major retailer. This gives you some shine, sparkle and just a little extra while you’re on the beach, without actually having to wear any bracelets or necklaces.

If you do like to wear jewelry, then you know that accessories make your outfit. On

the beach, you don’t want to wear tons of jewel-ry, especially if you plan on swimming, so a great alter-native is a newer trend: body chains. These chains are a great ways to add some sparkle and add a new feel to your style. They can be worn on and off the beach and are available at most retailers.

Of course, you can always switch it up with the basics – hats, bags and sunglass-es. Wide brimmed hats are the perfect functional fashion accessories, keeping the sun off of your skin. Bags are usually left up to your personal taste and how much you will be carrying during your trip to the beach. Just don’t forget your sunglasses; they’re a must have here on the island. There are all kinds to choose from, but a classic aviator looks good on everyone.

Swim in

Style

Sun, sand, surf, and a warm ocean breeze are usually all you need on your vacation on Hilton Head Island, but sometimes you want that extra special something to stand out on your vacation.

Caleb had just put a fresh menhaden on the hook and tossed it out when the water exploded. Ten feet in the air shaking his bucket mouth, the silver king then reentered the water and went into overdrive. The line screamed off the reel and, then, it was over.

This scenario is replayed over and over in the local waters starting with the dog days of July and, some years, not ending until September. It is commonly referred to as “jumping a tarpon.”

With a mouth as hard as solid rock, getting a hook into a tarpon is not an easy accom-plishment. Add in the factor that most are between 50 and 100 pounds and built for speed and acrobatic airborne maneuvers, keeping a hook in one can be even harder. Hooks usually need sharpening – off the shelf will not do – and drags tightened. Heavy action rods and reels that hold hun-dreds of yards of line will also increase your odds and boats that are hooked up general-ly pull anchor just to keep the fish close.

Huge schools of menhaden flood the shoals and sandbars that reach for miles towards the ocean off both ends of the island. And with them come the marauding schools of tarpon. It is not uncommon to see dozens of huge tarpon rolling and exploding through

the hapless bait schools. Oddly enough, this scenario only seems to happen when you can’t seem to get a bite. Often there is no visual presence when you catch, or more likely, jump a tarpon.

Big sharks also follow the large bait schools. Big blacktip sharks offer aerial displays and tackle busting runs. The blacktips are not alone; lemons, bulls, tigers and hammerheads are often caught in the heat of summer. Monster fishing is at its peak. If big sharks are your game, dropping baits behind a working shrimp boat will almost guarantee success.

July is a great month for fishing the silver kings or the big teeth, and many other species. So far, king mackerel fishing has been better than it has in many years. Big jack crevalle are roaming the beach and the sounds while jumbo Spanish mackerel and an occasional cobia will be caught, so treat yourself to some great fishing. The best time is now.

Captain Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years of experi-ence fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the new “Finatic” boat, which can accommodate up to 12 pas-sengers and features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. In South Carolina, sharks happen. One of the most common shark species caught in the area is the sharpnose shark. They are a year-round resident of Hilton Head beach-es and estuaries. These are fun fish to catch for people of all ages due to their minimal size.

Atlantic Sharpnose sharks, Rhizoprionodon terraenovae, are found in warm and tropical waters from Canada along the coast to Brazil. They are considered small sharks, reaching lengths of up to three and a half feet. They are very pretty sharks found in vari-ations of blue, olive, brown and shiny grey. Like many other sharks, their skin feels like fine grain sandpaper. They have a flattened and long snout, which is where their sharp-nose name is derived from. The ends of their pectorals are trailing white, with black tips on their dorsal fins. They are one of nature’s per-fect designs, also known as being parabolic, meaning that their fin points are equally distant from each other. They have up to 25 rows of teeth on both their upper and lower jaws.

Sharpnose can vary on their water depth and near shore territories. They are found off of sandy bottom beaches as well as our local estuaries. They have been found in water depths up to 920 feet, but they commonly spend their time in waters under 32 feet. These sharks have a great adaption to low salinity in water, but are not found in freshwa-ter. During the winter months sharpnose sharks travel off shore to deeper waters. They then return inshore during the spring to reproduce.

Sharpnose sharks are a varietal species that give live birth to their young. Females have lacental sacks that provide nutrients to the pups during gestation. They breed in near shore waters, once pregnant, they move off shore for their 11-month gestation period. The females then return inshore to give birth. They will have between four and seven pups each, which are a foot long when born and continue to grow up to two inches per month. Sharpnose sharks will reach maturity after two years and have been known to live up to 12 years in the wild.

These sharks eat small boney fish. They will also consume worms, shrimp, crabs and mol-lusks in our shallow near shore waters. Fishing from docks, it is fairly easy to catch them using shrimp or mullet as bait. Just remember to wear gloves when unhooking them to avoid encounters with their sharp teeth. Humans catch sharpnose in abun-dance, harvesting them as food. This species is abundant in number and, therefore, in the least concern section for conservation.

The H2O Nature Center is a great place to spark curiosity and inspire learning in all ages, offering eco adventure tours and a live alligator exhibit. To make reservations for the Alligator and Wildlife Tour, please call (843) 686-5323. For details on other water activities offered by H2O Sports, visit H2OSports.com.

By Jessie Renew, Outside Hilton Head

As a longtime kayak guide on Hilton Head and in the Lowcountry, I have seen and experienced the great variety of wildlife in our marshes, beaches, woods and waterways. I have always been fascinat-ed by the abundant variety of crab species that call these places home. From the microscopic to the large, inhabiting all of our diverse environments, crabs in the Lowcountry get around.

All Lowcountry crab species begin their life as microscopic planktonic larvae, floating in tidal currents until they are large enough to start their varied life on land and in the water. The smallest adult species of crab is less than a centimeter across and very difficult to spot because of its unique lifestyle. That is the oyster crab, which lives most of its life within the shell of oysters or other bivalves. Oysters pull water into their shells and through their bodies, filtering out food parti-cles. The oyster crabs unique relationship with the oyster allows it to get in on this feeding technique and consume some of the food the oyster intends for itself. Although you can occasionally see oys-ter crabs scuttling along oyster beds or hanging on pieces of marsh grass, they are most common-ly spotted at Lowcountry oyster roasts. Diners will crack open their steamed oyster to find these per-fect little crabs cooked inside. Some think it’s good luck to get an oyster crab in your oyster, and all who are daring enough to eat their little bodies agree they are delicious.

A slightly larger cousin of the oyster crab is the squareback marsh crab, also known as wharf crab or box crab, which grows to roughly two centimeters. It is characterized by its dark brown appearance and rectangular shell. This species of crab is everywhere. You can find them hanging out with their similar sized friends, the fiddler crabs, in marshes, on docks and wharfs, at the beach and in the woods. Some highly mobile members of the species have been found as far as 100 miles inland. The reason they have such a wide range of habitats is that they are true omnivores; they will eat anything from small fid-dler crabs, insects, snails, fresh marsh grass,

decaying leaves, fungi and plankton.

One of my favorite activities on Hilton Head is walking the beach looking for shells and other wildlife. It’s a special treat when I can spot the illusive ghost crab, by far the fastest and most agile crab species around. The ghost crab measures roughly seven centime-ters across and is characterized by its whit-ish yellow clear shell. Since they are so fair in color and live in the hot, harsh beach environment, ghost crabs dig burrows to pro-tect themselves. Young crabs choose to bur-row closer to the water line, where the older crabs dig further up the beach. Their bur-rows range in the size of the opening from three centimeters to almost 10 centimeters and can extend as far as four feet deep. During the day they mostly stay within these burrows, preferring to come out at night to scavenge for food and wet their gills.

The largest crab to be found in the Lowcountry is not actually a crab at all. The horseshoe crab is in fact most closely related to trilobites that existed 544 million years ago, and is in a class of species that includes insects and spiders. Like many spe-cies of “real crabs,” horseshoe crabs eat a varied diet of clams, oysters and other ani-mals. But, these living fossils have no teeth! Instead they use their strong legs to mush up their prey before passing it to the mouth. Like birds, horseshoe crabs have gizzards, which filter out all the hard, indigestible parts before entering the stomach.

There are many other types of crabs to be seen in the Lowcountry, including the fiddler crab, blue crab, stone crab, spider crab and hermit crab. Each has it’s own set of interesting behaviors and adaptations. Get outside on a tour of our local natural places and see some of them for yourself!

For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excur-sions, family outings and stand-up paddle boarding. Don’t miss the guided full moon kayak tour, which explores the saltmarsh. (843) 686-6996 or outsidehiltonhead.com.

There are several reasons to get out on the green and enjoy a game of golf – in addition to being therapeutic and relieving stress, golf also builds character and allows a 10-year-old to compete with an 80-year-old in a fair game. But that’s just the beginning.

It brings you close to nature. Not only will you get to explore courses surrounded by huge pines and live oak trees in a golf cart, but this great game will take you along the ocean as well as creeks and ponds where alligators can often be found. A variety of birds also make appearances on golf courses all across the island throughout the day – you might even see a bald eagle.

It builds character and relationships. As with any sport, golf builds character, but it does so in a unique way. Unlike soccer, football and other impact sports, golf requires you to wrestle with your conscience and not other players. It will reveal how disciplined you are when you hit a bad shot and require you to recall strategies to get out of bunkers.

It also allows players to leave the world behind and be together, undisturbed in a beautiful setting. Closeness, fun and memories will result. Those who play together stay together.

It’s good for your health. On average, players burn 1,500 calories during an 18-hole round of golf. One course, which is typically 7,000 yards, equals about four miles, which is a good walk in anybody’s book. It’s not advisable that golf is the only exer-cise you partake in, as you’ll certainly need some anaerobic exercise such as running or

swimming to get your heart rate up. But the good news is that as you play more golf and you want to improve, you’ll start taking your exer-cise away from the course more seriously. Breathing, stretching and visualization techniques learned will make each shot better, plus they also ward off Alzheimer’s, increase flexibility and lower your heart rate.

It’s for all skill levels and ages. How many other sports can a 10-year-old tee it up against an 80-year-old or an 80-year-old compete with a young pro? Using the handicap and tee placement system both can have a great competitive round of golf!

It’s good for your career. No more being excluded from the informal net-works your colleagues are building on the course and then leveraging for career advancement. An estimated 90% of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf. According to Barron's, one quarter of the 25 million golfers in the U.S. are top manage-ment executives. Wall Street Journal even report-ed a study that professional golfers live longer than the top executives because they have learned how to handle stress properly. Another benefit to professional golf is you get to play more golf as you live longer.
