Welcome to Hilton Head Island! If you’re visiting our barrier island in December, you’ve picked a magical time of year to explore all that the Lowcountry has to offer.

As area residents know, here in the Lowcountry we’re dreaming of a Green Christmas! That’s because the evergreen splendor of Hilton Head Island provides an ideal setting for any holiday celebration. With so many thrilling holiday events happening this month, we guarantee you won’t miss the snow a bit!

On December 14, don’t miss Handel’s “Messiah” performed at First Presbyterian Church at this spectacular celebration of the season. Get in the spirit on December 20 by watching the favorite holiday film “Polar Express” under the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town, with a blazing fire pit and tasty s’mores. Admission is complimentary with the donation of a canned good for Deep Well.

If you have an appetite for adventure, you can jump in the ocean on December 31 at the 14th Annual Polar Bear Swim or watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve at Harbour Town. Be sure to check out our Calendar of Events for a complete guide to the best of what’s happen-ing on the Island in December and beyond.

One thing that makes Island Events unique is our talented line-up of community columnists. In this issue, Capt. Miles Altman gets readers hooked on speckled sea trout fishing, Georgene Mortimer of Island Winery shares the secrets of Barbera wine, Jessie Renew of Outside Hilton Head shares the history and culture of Daufuskie Island and master naturalist Kathleen McMenamin shares the magic of the Wood Stork. And, of course, no issue would be complete without Doug Weaver of the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy offering insight to help you make the most of your time on the green this month.

At Island Events, we love sharing the very best of the Lowcountry with visitors from near and far. We enjoy welcoming new generations of visitors, year after year, and making it as easy as possible to explore this boot-shaped barrier island, offering 12 miles of beaches, golf, dining, shopping, outdoor activities and family-friendly fun year-round.

In December, as always, we’re dedicated to guiding you to the ultimate Hilton Head Island experiences, making your time here as fun and rewarding as possible. We hope our listings come in handy to guide you to some of the very best that the area has to offer.

Remember that the Lowcountry and the Coastal Empire are just a click away at hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, daufuskieisland.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. All of our “priceless” publications can be viewed online 24/7.

Please pull up our informative web sites on your smart phone to decide which shops to check out today, where to go for dinner tonight and what activities to plan for tomorrow. You’ll have all the information you need to make the most of every day (and night) on the island.

From our family to yours, Happy Holidays! Wishing you and your loved ones all the joy of the season and all the best in 2015!

Welcome

Originally grown on the low slopes and valleys of Italy’s Piemonte region, Barbera is a red wine grape that is now grown in many famous wine regions. Recent data suggests that Barbera has been around since the seventh century, which is truly amazing considering that the more popular Cabernet Sauvignon has only been around since the 17th century.

The Piemonte region of Italy is most famous for Nebbiolo and the wines produced from this grape: Barolo and Barbaresco. While these varieties get most of the attention, they are big complex wines that typically need decades to mature. One of the benefits of Barbera is that it can be enjoyed young.

If you close your eyes while trying your first sip of Barbera, the tart and juicy flavors of cherries and berries might make you think you’re tasting a light-bodied wine. However, you’d be sur-prised to see the deep inky color in your glass. This is what makes Barbera so special. It fea-tures light tannins and a high acidity so it tastes “juicy,” while the dark pigments in the skin dye the wine dark.

Barbera originated in Italy centuries ago, but it was brought to California and Argentina with waves of Italian immigration in the 19th century. Although there are many similarities between the Old World-style Italian Barbera and the New World-style grown in California and South America, there are distinct differences.

A typical Italian Barbera will have herbaceous and floral notes such as parsley and lavender,

while the warm sun-drenched grapes of the New World will create brighter and fruitier profiles. Early Barbera vines were planted in large quantities in the Central Valley of California for use in inexpensive jug wines.

However, in more recent decades higher quality varietals are being planted in the cooler regions of Napa and Sonoma. These higher quality grapes produce magnificent world-class wines described as “bursting with sour cherries” or “loaded with raspberries,” phrases that attest to the brighter, fruitier profiles of New World Barbera.

Whether you prefer the Italian or California style, Barbera is an extremely food-friendly wine. Its slight acidity makes it a perfect selec-tion for beef dishes, barbecue and spiced foods. Barbera is one of the few red wines that can pair well with lightly-dressed salads filled with meat or cheese.

At Island Winery, we make a Barbera from sun-drenched Amador County California grapes. Our Barbera is a typical New World-style wine, which is dark, smooth and bursting with berries. Please stop by for a free sample and see if you agree.

Island Winery features a great selection of wines, including vintages from across the country and around the world. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be glad to offer suggestions to help expand your horizons.

The perfect bottle of wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Road. Store and tast ing hours are Monday through Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wine Flights and Cheese are available from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday-Friday; 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. A Wine & Cheese Happy Hour is offered Monday-Friday starting at 4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com.

Horoscope December 2014

ARIES If you’re looking to change jobs - or even careers - this could be your lucky month. A meeting could open new doors for you. Just make sure you know what you want. Relish any free time you get - it won’t last. A new associate makes an impression.

TAURUS Pay attention to details or you could make a big mistake. Schedule important meetings later in the month when your energy level will be higher. A heart-to-heart conver-sation will get problems out in the open in a troubled friendship. Express your feelings!

GEMINI A little white lie now and then isn’t such a bad thing - especially if it means sparing someone’s feelings. A sudden change at work could be a sign of things to come. Be aware of upcoming opportunities. Listen carefully for Libra’s hidden message. A special treat comes this month.

CANCER Is something troubling you lately, Cancer? If you’ve been feeling crabbier than usual, it may be something you’re not totally aware of. Take some time to get in touch with your feelings. Meditation could be a helpful and relaxing way. A Libra of the opposite sex has a surprise.

LEO It’s time to give up on a failing romance. If you’re putting forth all the emo-tional effort and getting nothing in return, you owe it to yourself to hit the road. A realistic look at finances helps you plan a smart bud-get. Exercise helps to relieve stress. A Scorpio offers good advice.

VIRGO Don’t break promises you made to yourself last month. You’ll only beat yourself up for it later on. Could it be a fear of failure that’s holding you back? The answers can be found within yourself. If traveling is on your agenda for the month’s end, be sure to get an early start.

LIBRA Butting into a friend’s business will only lead to resentment. Some people need to learn by their own mistakes. Plans may be cancelled at the last minute. Perhaps there’s something you’ve been wanting to try. Go for it. Now is a good time to call old friends.

SCORPIO Discipline will get you through a busy work schedule. Procrastination, on the other hand, will only get you into trouble. A break from routine will provide a pleasant diver-sion. A Libra from your past will come to mind later in the month. Maybe it’s time to get back in touch.

SAGITTARIUS A problem now will be history by next month, so don’t let it get to you. A friendship with an Aquarius may be under some strain. Do your best to clear the air as soon as possible. Why do you hide from lasting love when it’s beating down your door? Take a chance and you will be better for it.

CAPRICORN It will take a lot of convincing to get what you want in a busi-ness deal. Think creatively and you may get your way. Someone you thought of as a friend will do something to disappoint you. Before you get too upset, try to identify the root of the problem. It may be deeper than you think.

AQUARIUS A difference of opinion

with family could cause a great deal of tension. With some diplomacy on your part, you can keep the peace while still holding your argument. An adventurous mood could lead you to an interesting place this month. Don’t be afraid to go exploring.

PISCES Step back from a problem and you’ll be better able to handle it. Time to yourself is the key to peace of mind this month. Good news regarding a recent financial invest-ment will brighten your budget. Something you’ve been wanting will now seem much more affordable. Enjoy!

In the summer, charter fishing clients frequently ask, “What do you do around here in the winter? Is there anything to fish for then?”

These questions always brings a smile to my face because – as all resident anglers know – winter on Hilton Head Island offers some of the best fishing of the year. Cooler weather brings cooler water temperatures, and the murky summer water turns a clear green. It’s time to put away the big nets and heavier tackle and break out the light rods and artificials. It’s trout time!

Speckled or spotted sea trout – known locally as “specks” – are here year round, but not in the numbers found at this time of year. (Maybe they are here in abundance throughout the year, and the cooler water brings out a voracious appetite. Like a lot of things related to fishing, I don’t always try to figure it out. It just is.)

There are days this time of year that every cast results in a rod-jarring strike followed by a spirited battle with lots of top water head shaking. Reeling in specks offers a lively, rewarding adventure.

Silvery iridescent and covered with black spots,

the sleek specks average a pound or two, but fish in the three to five pound range are not uncommon. These bigger fish, often called “gators,” will literally take the rod out of your hand if you’re not careful.

As I said earlier, the sea trout strike is anything but gentle. To ensure the prey doesn’t get away, trout are armed with a set of fangs that are quite impressive.

So, how do you catch local sea trout? Hard plastic swimming baits like Mirrorlures are pro-ductive, but more often than not I prefer the soft plastic tails on a quarter-ounce jig head. There are many varieties and colors, paddle tails, screw tails and just plain straight tails. When fished properly, all can bring success.

A growing number of companies are incorporat-ing scent into plastic lures. Gulp and DOA are some of the better-known brands and have proven their fish-attracting properties for some time now. One of my favorite colors is aptly named the Christmas Tree, which fits right in with the spirit of the holidays celebrated during trout season.

While everyone else is decorating and shopping, I’m tossing the Christmas Tree at specks. If the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is getting to you, give me a call and I’ll put you on some of best fishing the Lowcountry has to offer!

Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 43 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the new “Finatic” boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers and features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. Wonderful Wood Storks

Learn more about America’s largest wading bird.

Photography by Kathleen McMenamin

Wood storks can be seen gracefully soaring over marshes or feeding in the shallows during low tide all over Hilton Head Island. These large wading birds are the only breeding species of storks found in the United States. This once-endangered species is currently making a great comeback along the Southeast coast and especially in Beaufort County.Wood storks, Mycteria Americana, have the distinction of being the largest wading bird in the United States. They stand at almost four feet tall with an impressive five-foot wing span. Also known as Wood Ibis, these birds are all white with black tips on their wings and tail. They have a buzzard-like face with a dark grey neck and head. Wood storks have a long, thick black bill used for tactile foraging. They tend to gather in colonies, whether feeding or foraging in shallow water or low tidal marshes.

Wood storks are found from South Carolina to South America. Prior to the 1980s, they primarily nested in Florida during the late winter and spring. The birds migrated into South Carolina’s marsh-lands as a post-breeding foraging area. Human development in their natural nesting habitat in Florida has moved them further north into South Carolina for all stages of life. Currently, South Carolina coastal areas offer an ideal nesting and foraging ground for wood storks.

The first nesting colony was documented in South Carolina in 1981. By 1984, the wood stork was put onto the Endangered Species List. As of June of 2014, these birds have been downgraded to threatened, rather than endangered. In 2014, there was an increase of 500 nests, bringing the total South Carolina nest number to 2,501. Beaufort County boasted nine nesting colonies in 2014, the largest number of colonies in the Palmetto State.

Large colonies of nests are found in the upper branches of black gum and cypress trees rooted in standing water. Nests are made out of live willow sprigs and then cemented together with Spanish moss and guano. Breeding wood storks can be identified by their pink feet. Females will lay between three and five eggs. Both the male and female will incubate the eggs for 30 days.

The hatchlings stay with their parents for about 55 days before fledging. On average, two of the young will make it to adulthood and will begin breeding between three and four years old. The placement of wood stork nests in standing water is very important to the survival of the young. Mammals are a common predator of eggs and young, and the standing water prevents them from accessing the nests.

Wood storks are known as tactile feeders, as they dip their open beaks into shallow water and feel around for fish and crustaceans. Due to this type of feeding, they prefer shallow water no deeper than 20 inches, which is why they are common-ly seen foraging in estuaries at low tide. While wading in the water and dipping their beaks, the wood storks will use their feet to rustle ani-mals out of the soft mud. On average, a wood stork will consume up to one pound of fish a day. During breeding season, a pair of wood storks can forage 400 pounds of food for themselves and their growing young.

While on Hilton Head Island, keep your eyes out for this impressive wading bird. You won’t be disappointed!

Discover Daufuskie

Tucked between Hilton Head Island and Savannah – and accessible only by boat – lies a true Lowcountry gem. One of the last truly unique places, Daufuskie Island has a rich history and culture, all tied to its fascinat-ing ecosystem.

The first inhabitants of Daufuskie Island were the Yemassee Indians. Pottery shards recov-ered on the island include some of the oldest found in North America, dating back more than 9,000 years. Oyster middens, which are large collections of discarded oyster shells, point to the rich lives of local Native Americans, who fished and harvested seafood in the sur-rounding waterways.

In 1715, a bloody battle ensued between the Indians and European settlers. Those who sur-vived the skirmish fled Daufuskie, and the ante-bellum history of the island began. Like Hilton Head Island to the north, Daufuskie was home to several plantations specializing in rice and Sea Island Cotton. West African slaves worked these labor-intensive crops. Slave cul-ture developed on Daufuskie, as it did across the region, combining African and European traditions to form the cultural group now known as the Gullah people.

In 1861, Union troops captured Hilton Head Island and Daufuskie Island in the Battle of Port Royal. By the close of the Civil War, Daufuskie and the surrounding sea islands were primarily occupied by freed slaves. Isolated and insular, these societies further developed their tradi-tions, and Gullah culture flourished. Daufuskie islanders continued to grow cotton until crops were ruined by the boll weevil.

Relying on their natural environment, Daufuskie

residents soon established an oyster canning industry. In oyster houses, workers shucked and canned oysters, which were shipped by steamboat to Savannah for sale. The island entered an era of prosperity, and the popula-tion grew to more than 1,000 residents in 1945.

Sadly, development in the region led to pollu-tion of the neighboring Savannah River. Oysters, which are filter feeders, are particular-ly sensitive to changes in water quality. Fewer oysters due to disease and contamination led to the closing of commercial oyster beds in 1951. With the loss of the oyster canning industry, few jobs were available for island residents and the population of Daufuskie plummeted. By the mid-1950s, only a handful of Gullah people remained on the island.

Daufuskie remained isolated and sparsely inhabited until the 1970s, when development on nearby Hilton Head Island spilled across the Calibouge Sound. Since then, several upscale residential and vacation communities have attempted to take hold on the Daufuskie, with varying degrees of success. The unique combination of unspoiled nature, rich cultural history and remote location has made Daufuskie an attractive home for artists, eccentrics and free thinkers.

For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and stand-up paddle boarding. Don’t miss the guided full moon kayak tour, which explores the saltmarsh. (843) 686-6996 or outsidehiltonhead.com.

... the angle of the front arm matches the angle of an imaginary line...

Two-Plane vs. One-Plane SwingBy I.J. Schecter with Doug Weaver, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

Two types of swings are in fashion today – the two-plane and the one-plane. Until recently, almost all professionals used a two-plane swing, involving a fairly erect posture, narrow stance, a level turn and a swing that brings the arms up almost verti-cally, on a steeper plane than that of the shoulders.

Over the last 15 years or so, swing scholar Jim Hardy has introduced the increasingly popular one-plane swing, which is distinguished from the two-plane by its physical ease and mechanical simplicity.

While both types of swings end up at essentially the same spot – square to the ball at impact – they get there in different ways. Let’s talk about the path your club should be taking to the ball and the three crucial stops it should make along the way.

Stop No. 1The position of your hands and wrists halfway through your backswing should provide clear evidence whether you’re using a two- or one-plane swing.

Since the two-plane backswing is intended to be pulled straight back up over your shoulder, halfway through the backswing (at the 9 o’clock position), your arms will be moving on an upright plane, your clubhead slightly outside or aligned with your hands and your wrists hinged.

Here’s a good test: If you’re on-plane and you allow your palms to open while in this position, the clubshaft should slide down through them. If you’re using a one-plane swing, which is flatter by nature than the two-plane swing, the clubshaft will not slide through your palms so easily, if at all.

Stop No. 2At the top of the more traditional two-plane back-swing, the front arm is more upright (between the ear and shoulder), and the shaft of the club is parallel to the target line.

By contrast, the one-plane swing arrives at the top of the backswing with the front arm on the same plane as the shoulders, at an angle closer to 45 degrees. This in turn keeps the clubshaft parallel to the target line and maintains an unchanged spine angle from the initial address position. It is called a “one-plane” because the angle of the front arm matches the angle of an imaginary line drawn between the shoulders.

Stop No. 3It is on the way back toward the ball that, for most golfers, the one-plane swing will begin to feel odd. Most likely, you’ve grown up learning a two-plane swing, so the one-plane route will feel counterintuitive to your muscles. After all, you’ve spent hours trying to perfect a swing in which the club is brought straight back up and over your shoulders before your hips start to release, pulling the rest of your body along with them.

In the one-plane swing, your upper body releases first and your lower body second. The swing is designed this way in order to help you avoid getting “stuck” partway through the downswing, a circumstance that leads to perilous adjustments as a result of flawed timing.

Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedes trians and other users.

Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.

Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
