Flowers are starting to bloom, the beaches are warming up, shops are pulling out their spring dresses and butterflies are starting to emerge

from their cocoons. There’s no better time to get out and explore the island than now.

Whether you’re looking to roam the beach in the sun, kayak down Broad Creek, perfect your putting out on the green, go out on a fishing charter, dolphin tour or a parasailing trip, you’ll find adventures around ever corner on our boot-shaped island. With 12 miles of beaches and bike paths that extend all over the island, Hilton Head is sure to be a fun time this spring.

With its perfect weather and gentle breezes, March brings an abundance of fun events to the island, including the 30th annual Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival. From March 9-15, wine tastings, celebrity chef dinners and luncheons will take over the island. While foodies and wine aficionados are celebrating with spirits, music lovers can attend the Hilton Head International Piano Competition for Young Artists March 9-13. And you can’t forget about St. Patrick’s Day! Get your green on and enjoy the 31st annual Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 15, when 25,000 spectators line Pope Avenue to enjoy this 30-year-old tradition. For additional details about all the exciting activities on the island this month, be sure to check out our March calendar of events.

In this issue of Island Events, Georgene Mortimer of Island Winery discusses how to make the most out of a wine festival, while Jessie Renew of Outside Hilton Head reveals the truth about the yellow coat of Pine Pollen that blankets the Lowcountry around this time of year. Also in this issue, Master Naturalist Kathleen McMenamin takes a look at the white ibis and its habitat on the island, Captain Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters shares the struggles of catch-ing sheepshead on the coast and Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy instructor Doug Weaver takes a look at Matt Kuchar’s golf form in an attempt to help you make the most of your game this spring.

We hope all of our listings are helpful in guiding you to some of the very best that the island has to offer. As always, the best of the Lowcountry and the Coastal Empire are just a click away at hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. All of our “priceless” publications can be viewed online 24/7.

Visit the King Neptune Statue at Shelter Cove Harbour

The towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a larger-than-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.

Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge.

When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot wide base, the numbers indicate the pre cise time. Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundi al, the statue was origi nally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in

1983. Engineers made meticulous measure-ments before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time.

They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star.

An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights gen-erations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to expe rience a true Hilton Head Island icon.

regions within the same country. Try some wines that blend merlot with other wines.

But if you want to try a little bit of everything, make sure you taste the wines in the proper order: dry whites, sweet whites, dessert whites, light reds and lastly heavy reds. Sticking to this order will greatly help with palate fatigue, which happens when you taste a lot of wines. When palate fatigue sets in, it becomes difficult to appreciate the subtle aromas and flavors that define a wine. That is also why it’s important to record what you like as you are tasting. Do not double back; I guarantee you that the light crispy citrus flavors that you tasted early on in the Sauvignon Blanc, will not be there when you try it again after tasting sweeter or heavier wines.

Use Your Wine Skills

Smell: Sniff & Swirl – Give it a few rapid but gentle swirls and then get your nose close and sniff. Look for intensity of aromas and the bouquet.

Sip – Place a small amount on the back of your mouth and hold it there before swallowing. Does it feel thin (watery) or full? Do you feel the tannins? Are they harsh or soft?

Swallow – Swallow the wine and ask yourself: Does it taste like it smells? What flavors do you taste? Do you like it?

Savor the Finish – Does the aroma and flavor stay in your mouth after you swallow? If so, the wine has a long finish. If the taste disappears quickly after you swallow it, the wine is said to have a short finish.

Please remember to drink responsibly and have a designated driver.

Spring is coming, and so is the time for wine. March is when Hilton Head celebrates this age-old beverage with our international wine festival, which is one of the largest on the East Coast. While it’s a fun and exciting experience, it can also be overwhelming, so we’ve got some tips to help you get ready.

Come prepared

Don’t arrive with an empty stomach. Instead, come with some room to enjoy the delicious offerings of the Lowcountry cuisine at the festival. Before you arrive, be sure to check the forecast because March weather can be fickle. You’ll also want to dress for comfort, especially in the shoe department! And don’t forget to bring your own water and sip it throughout the day because wine, just like all alcoholic beverages, is dehydrating.

Have a Plan

With over 250 different wines to choose from, it’s impossible to taste everything. Create a plan with a goal in mind. For example, if you enjoy white wines but typically only drink pinot grigio, use the festival as an opportunity to expand your white wine repertoire by avoiding all pinot grigio samples and focus on new and unfamiliar white wine. Or do the com-plete opposite. Let’s say you love Merlot but only drink one brand; you can use the festival as an opportunity to try the different expressions of Merlot. Compare Merlots from different coun-tries, different years or different

In my jewelry box, I had several items gathering dust. There was a truly ugly 10K gold ring with drab, green jade given to me by my high school boyfriend. There was also a truly beautiful 18K gold hat pin with a fox

head on it, a gift from my grandfather. It's pretty, but I don't wear hats. Then, there were several pairs of button earrings I "outgrew." I prefer dangle earrings now and a bolder look.

As you might have guessed, each one of these unworn, unwanted pieces of jewelry met a different fate. The ugly 10K gold ring was scrapped because, well, it was ugly! The beautiful 18K gold hat pin was repurposed into a charm. The button earrings were given to my nieces with hopes that they will think of me when they wear them.

As you sort through your unworn jewelry item by item, here are some options to consider:

• If the jewelry has great sentimental value, hold on to it. No precious metal or gems are as valuable as your memories of loved ones. Even if the item is not in fashion now, go ahead and wear it anyway, keeping memories of your loved ones close to you.

• Give it away to someone you love. There is simply no better use for unwanted jewelry. Why wait until the end of your life to give away items you no longer wear, when you could see the enjoyment they bring to those you love right now?

• Repurpose your jewelry so you can enjoy it once more. Turn your "old sentimentals" into new sensational jewelry. Forsythe's designers will offer suggestions for how to update an item or rework it into a one-of-a-kind creation. You will receive a complimentary CAD rendering of your custom design beforehand and an estimate to approve.

• Trade it in for exciting new jewelry. Yes, Forsythe will accept your unwanted jewelry as pay-ment when you make a purchase. In general, you will receive a higher return for trading in your jewelry than you will if you sell it for cash. Be sure to ask if you might receive an even higher trade in value if the item is sold on consignment.

• Scrap it. This is the best option for jewelry that is broken or woefully out of style. Gold prices are still double what they were in 2008, so you will get a good return on any jewelry you purchased before then. Remember, Forsythe will pay for your platinum, gold, (even 10K) and sterling silver. We will weigh it and pay you for it on the spot.

Don't let unwanted jewelry take up space in your jewelry box. Discern the best way to dispose of it or trade it for new fashions. Remember, unlike other luxuries that will lose value quickly, fine jewelry almost always returns some value, even as it ages. Whether that value is monetary or sentimental, one thing is sure: it is an enduring investment in beauty and love.

Debbie Berling, Forsythe Jewelers' Graduate Gemologist, has tips regarding jewelry you no longer enjoy.

Horoscope March 2015

ARIES A disagreement with a busi-ness associate brings out the best in

you. Instead of getting angry, you take the high road and try to see the other side of the situation. Superiors will reward you for your actions. A close friend is there for you when needed most. Don’t be afraid to open up.

TAURUS Don’t let others walk all over you when they don’t agree with your

opinion. Stand up for what you believe in. A family member asks you to help him or her make an important choice. Be supportive, but don’t try to sway the decision.

GEMINI You’re not one for monoto-ny, Gemini. Thankfully, you don’t have

to worry this month. There’s so much going on that you don’t know which way to turn. Try to get organized. It’s the only way to make any progress. Things will calm down. That special someone finally says yes. Enjoy!

CANCER When it comes to a personal matter, you have to make the

first move. The others involved don’t know what to do and are waiting for someone else to take the lead. It’s up to you to get the ball rolling. A friend wants to get you involved in a financial scheme. Don’t do it; it’s too risky.

LEO Don’t let your pride get in the way of apologizing to a good friend. You

said something insensitive and need to make amends. This relationship means too much to you to let it end. A loved one offers you busi-ness advice. You don’t have to follow it but you do have to listen. He or she means well.

VIRGO Your perfectionist nature gets the best of you in a business situation.

Instead of letting an associate present a slop-py project, you fix it up. While you don’t get the full credit you deserve, your co-worker does appreciate your help. A loved one needs to talk. Be there for him or her.

LIBRA Don’t be too naive this month. An acquaintance tries to pull the wool

over your eyes, so be on the lookout. An old friend is trying to solve a “mystery” from the past and needs your help. Be supportive, but don’t get too involved. There’s more going on than you think. Aries plays a key role.

SCORPIO While trying to help a close friend, you learn some interest-

ing information. It is best to keep this to your-self. Your friend will be hurt if he or she finds out. A close relative wants to dine with you. Say yes; it’s sure to be a good time.

SAGITTARIUS Control your temper when it comes to a business associate

early in the month. This person really doesn’t know what he or she is talking about. Show that you can be the bigger person. A family gathering turns into a family feud. Try to stay out of it. It will blow over quickly.

CAPRICORN Stand your ground when arranging an important meeting

with friends. Don’t let them take control. A loved one gets into trouble and needs your help. Pull all the strings that you can. He or she would do the same for you. Pisces plays a key role this month.

AQUARIUS When it comes to mak-ing a business decision, everyone has

a different opinion. State your case and listen to others. While you may not agree with them, respect their views. You have to cancel plans with that special someone. Don’t worry; he or she will understand.

PISCES Start off the month with a clean slate. Don’t let the stress of the

past few weeks get you down. With a positive attitude, things will start to go your way. A loved one lets some important information slip. Don’t start spreading it around. He or she needs your confidence.

– Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.– Swim near a lifeguard. United States Lifessaving Association statistics show that substantially more drownings occur in areas where there are no lifeguards.– Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.– Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents.

These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.– Don’t let your kids swim unsu per- vised, even in guarded areas.– Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.– Don’t overestimate your swim- ming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t

get stuck in water over your head.– Don’t rely on flotation devices. – Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.– Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.– Always swim sober.– Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first. This will help you avoid spinal injuries.

DESIGNATED SWIMMING AREAS: Official swimming areas have been desig nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach

During the beach season, lifeguards are stationed in each of the designated swimming areas for assistance and beach information. Please ask a life guard before entering the water if the yellow caution flag is flying.

BEACH MARKER SIGNS: Hilton Head’s beaches are marked with signs to let emergency responders know where anyone who needs help is on the beach. They are also useful to help you find your place if you are lost on the beach. It is helpful for everyone in your group to know the marker where you are staying, so that you can return on your own or tell beach patrol personnel, so they can get you back to the right place. The markers sit near the dune line.

Fighting the Fish: sheepshead

Sheepshead fishing kickstarts the spring season and provides the angler with quite a battle.

The slight, almost imperceptible tug on the rod tip signaled that the sheeps-head had taken the crab in his mouth.

Pulling back gently to tighten the connec-tion, I waited for the second tap. At this point, history has taught me that it may be too late, the crab crushed and the fish gone. But there it was, another light tap. The classic tug-of-war battle was on. The sheepshead did his best to return to the structure below, bending the rod double on surging runs and taking drag.

After several minutes we finally had color; the black-and-white striped, master bait thief was close. But they never give up easy. The fish took line again and headed for the depths, going back and forth until finally it was close enough to slide the net under. This beauty weighed around eight pounds and was mostly grown; weights in the double digits are possible, but few are caught over the ten-pound mark.

Sheepsheads are present year-round in the Lowcountry, but March is a banner month for

this fishery. A member of the snapper family, they rank in my list of favorites to catch. They’re difficult to hook due to their feeding habits and a real scrapper when it comes to fighting, but they are delicious on the plate.

They use large sets of almost humanlike teeth to crush barnacles, crabs and other hard shell critters, and the preferred bait for most anglers are fiddler crabs. The most common rig for catching these fish is a fish-finder rig, a sliding sinker rigged above a short leader with the hook at the end. Dropping the crab over the structure until the sinker hits bottom, then reeling the sinker a foot up allows the angler, if he’s lucky, to feel the light tap or tug when the sheepie takes the crab in his mouth. Only seconds pass before the sheepshead crushes the crab, spits the hook and then is on his way. Needless to say, you need a good supply of fiddlers if you want to seriously fish for sheepsheads. Fresh clams and live shrimp are also productive baits.

One of the things I like most about March is that sheepsheads are the harbingers of the sea-son. They kickstart our local spring, keeping us busy until the cobia show in late April and May. But that’s another month and another story. Now, it’s time to catch the sheepies!

P.S. A note for our guests and residents of northern origin, these are not the same fish as the freshwater species you know from back home.

In ancient Egypt the ibis is associated with Thoth, the god of wisdom, written word and knowledge. These birds were important indi-

cators of the oncoming flood and fertile time for the Nile River valley. Although times have changed, the ibis are still excellent indicators of a healthy environment in our beautiful Lowcountry.

The white ibis, Eudocimus albus, is a common sight on our coastal waterways and freshly cut golf courses. They can be viewed in large num-bers, foraging for food, roosting in trees or soaring through our Lowcountry skies. The white ibis can be most easily identified by its all-white body. It has a long, down-curved red bill and long red legs. Adult ibis will have black wing tips, which can be observed when in flight. Juveniles tend to flock with other adults or large groups of other juveniles. They tend to be dark in color, but still have the apparent down- curved bill. Ibis are mid-sized wading birds with a wingspan of approximately three feet. The longest living ibis was in captivity and lived to be 27 years old.

Ibis can be found throughout the coastal areas of northern South America through the Caribbean and North America to the Carolinas. They tend to stay along the coastal areas, espe-cially when breeding, and prefer shallow coast-al marshes, wetlands and mangrove swamps. They can also be found in flooded fields or in generally moist environments. The depth of the water in an area significantly affects the popula-tion of ibis. Their feeding habits tend towards water in which can they wade. They look for food in large groups, either in the water or on moist grassy environments. Using their sense of touch as the primary hunting method, ibis probe the ground for crustaceans, mollusks, fish, insects, small reptiles and other aquatic organ-isms with their beaks. Ibis create large colonies once a year during their breeding season. They will flock to healthy and abundant foraging habitats beginning in

March. Females begin the breeding season by displaying their fertility through dance to the males. After copulation, the female will choose a site and begin building her nest. The male will help by bringing twigs and vegetation. Ibis will lay up to four eggs and incubate them for up to 21 days. The female does the majority of the incubating, while the male brings her food and aggressively defends the nest from any other intruders. Once the chicks hatch, they are very weak and vulnerable. One parent will sit and warm the young while the other half of the pair finds food and fresh water. Chicks will leave the nest after about two weeks. The young will become more independent and will tend to flock together in large groups.

The H2O Nature Center is a great place to spark curiosity and inspire learning in all ages, offering eco-adventure tours and live alligator exhibits. By Jessie Renew, Outside Hilton Head

Starting in late February and through March,

often into April, pol-len invades the Lowcountry. Anything that lives outside will be cov-ered in this fluores-cent yellow, waxy, grainy substance. It seems to invade every aspect of life this time of year.

For many, March on Hilton Head also brings the sneezing and itchy eyes of seasonal aller-gies. It’s easy to blame that yellow coating substance for these symptoms, but that type of pollen is not the culprit. There are 42 species of trees, weeds and grasses that flower in Beaufort County in the spring. The pollen that covers our cars and porches is pine pollen, which has been proven not to cause allergies.

Pine trees are amongst some of the most ancient tree species on earth, having lived three times longer than flowering plants. Their efficient reproductive process makes these trees the most common conifers on earth. Fertilization begins when pine trees produce soft cones containing pollen spores. Wind and gravity free the pollen from the soft cones, causing it to coat everything around it, including nearby pine cones, which contain the female seeds. After the seeds inside the pine cone are fertilized, they find their way out of the pine cone and into the ground to grow and become new trees. The cone pro-tects the seeds, which allows the pine cones

to travel farther before planting them. This is how the species has become so widespread.

The seed of the pine tree is the pine nut, a common cooking ingredient. Pine pollen is eaten all over the world. It contains a great deal of vitamins and minerals and is revered as natural medicine. You can buy pine pollen supplements on most vitamin aisles, indicated for men who believe they are experiencing low levels of testosterone. This condition, called andropause, causes a loss of energy, concentration and a rise in depression. Pollen is a potent source of natural androgens, which act like testosterone in the body. Pollen is also indicated for prostate regulation, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-ag-ing and immune system enhancement.

Pine pollen is so plentiful at certain times of year that it’s counted in grains per cubic meter of air. Rather than cursing this omnipres-ent dusting, marvel at the incredible reproduc-tive process taking place, one that has taken place on earth for millions of years. This March, get outside and see the fantastic array of Lowcountry flora and fauna.

For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and stand-up paddle boarding. Don’t miss the guided full moon kayak tour, which explores the saltmarsh. (843) 686-6996 or outsidehiltonhead.com.

March brings one of the most fascinating natural events in the calendar to

Lessons From APRO: Studying Matt Kuchar’s FormBy Doug Weaver, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

Matt Kuchar is the reigning 2014 RBC Heritage champion and we will ana-lyze his swing position, just after impact

in the 2013 game. But first, mark April 13-19 on your calendar, because the RBC Heritage is in its 47th year and you’re invited. Like the Super Bowl, many non-players go because it’s a popular social event. But it’s more than just a fun time; this South Carolina tradition has distributed over $28 million to those in need, $3 million in 2014 alone. And last year, Matt Kuchar stole the show.

What can we learn from Matt Kuchar swinging his driver? Keep in mind the golf swing is built and studied from the ground up.

Feet and Knees:Let’s get started by observing his feet and foot-work. Matt’s white shoes make it easy to see that his right heel is coming up and allowing his knee to move toward the target, which lets his hips and core lead the way in creating club head speed. His left knee is straightening and the weight is shifting to the left heel. Therefore, the left toes are off the ground and the right toes and touching the ground.

Hips:His hips are pivoting, allowing his core to move to the target, shifting all the body weight onto his left foot, towards the heel. This all starts happening before impact. As Ben Hogan says, “the lower body leads the way.” If golfers let their feet, knees and hips lead the way, they’ll be more accurate, powerful and consistent.

Shoulders:Matt’s core is pulling his shoulders, which are pulling his arms. He lets gravity rule in the arms so the club will drop to the inside swing path. When this chain of events occurs in proper

sequence, the swing feels slow and powerful at the same time, allowing golfers to reach their full potential.

Arms and Hands: Matt’s arms and hands are releasing, creating an efficient and effortless club head speed. The key here is to let the club do the work. The golf swing is like dancing – the two partners must work together. The modern golf swing is led by the body with the arms and club following, but this can cause them to get out of sync. Golfers will often get a tight grip, which hinders the release and club head speed, causing players to lose confidence and quit turning their bodes in an effort to be in control. But your best golf requires trust.

The club head needs to go fast and it must be released. Look at the right hand – it’s over the left hand and arm. If you don’t do this, you must turn more or give up distance.

Head:His eyes are down, not trying to follow the ball. This maintains the spine angle, allowing for consistent and solid contact. This also helps with centrifugal force, which straightens and extends his arms for maximum arc, adding distance to the shot.

Moving your body in the correct sequence while swinging is key in golf, because when your body works together, you’re able to hit further with more accuracy.

Now that you have these tips, get out in the warm sunny weather and try for yourself. March is a great month to start a beginners or advanced golf class or try Hilton Head’s championship golf courses. Make the most of your time on the course this season.

I hope to see you out on the green!
