VINAKA!!!
Treasure Island News March 2015
I first came to Fiji in 1969 and visited different resorts quite a few times before Treasure Island Resort was
opened – in fact I stayed on Beachcomber a few times and paddled over to Eluvuka Island before a resort was
built, and in October 1974 stayed at Treasure Island Resort for the first time – which is now over 40 years ago
and my recent visit was my 55th time at the resort. I love returning to Treasure because of the friendliness and
loyalty of the staff, some of whom have been here for many years. After Cyclone Evan, many of the older staff,
who had been working at the resort for a long time, returned and lots of new faces arrived and it hasn’t taken them very long to fit into the Treasure Island Family. It is wonderful to be greeted each time I arrive by all
those familiar smiling faces and a few new ones that I will soon get to know.
The biggest changes over the years have been the constant upgrading of the rooms – an ongoing programme –
air conditioning is now in every Bure instead of the old push out louvered glass windows – the décor is always
being modernised and the addition of extra room in the Bures with the extension of a rear bathroom is
progressing rapidly. The children’s playground and games Bure in the centre of the island was a great new feature a couple of years ago to the delight of the famous Kid’s Club and the upgrading of the Turtle pond and Iguana compound has made this area a very popular place.
The deli near the Takia Bar is a great innovation for a quick cheap lunch alternative to the Buffet or A la Carte
menu and the Teppanyaki dining is great with a group of friends…….
I will keep returning to Treasure Island Resort as long as my health will allow.

Lee James & Sharon Robertson - Their stories…..
I was introduced to Fiji by the eldest daughter of the former Tui Vuda, who came to Canada in
1986 for a vacation and stayed with a longstanding friend of her parents; known to the family as
Tai Naleen. Tai Naleen initially came to Fiji in 1958 and stayed in Viseisei Village.
I was then invited to visit the village of Viseisei and arrived in 1987 for Christmas and New Year
staying in the chiefly house. I met the head housekeeper, Tai Sala Tora, who was my mentor and
teacher of the culture, protocols and language of the Vuda district.
I first visited Treasure Island Resort in 1987 and have been a return guest for the past 27 years
having made annual and, on occasion, bi-annual stays.
Viseisei Village and Treasure Island Resort have truly become my second homes. It is firstly the
love and spirit of my Fijian families and secondly the beauty of the islands that call me back to
Fiji.
Although my adoptive parents and my friend and mentor have died, their children have honoured
me to continue to be a part of their families in Viseisei and the children of Vuda, employed by
Treasure Island Resort, have welcomed me on the beachfront with ―welcome home, Nita (Aunty) Sharon‖.
The Canadian Prairie becomes a Fijian hibiscus once again………...

Turtle Hatching We have been eagerly anticipating the first nest of Hawksbill Turtles to
hatch and after a long wait, we are very happy to announce they did, on
Sunday the 22nd of February, which incidentally happened to be
Rowena, our Environmental Officer’s birthday,. It was definately the best birthday surprise for her!!
125 hatchlings were counted in total and they’re now safely in the turtle pond, where they will be cared for until they are bigger and less
vulnerable. Then, as part of our Hawksbill Turtle conservation
programme, in partnership with the Fisheries Department, they will be
tagged and released.
Over the last 10 years, we have cared for and released an average of 100
turtles per year.
We are very proud to have played such a vital part in helping to protect
this critically endangered species.
