Father's Day is approaching. Again, no need to wait for just that one special day to express to your father or father figure, how very important they are to you. Try something just from your heart, like a poem or a card made from scratch. I know those are things that children do a lot, however, it still works as a grown up child. :)

What Makes a DadGod took the strength of a mountain,

The majesty of a tree,The warmth of a summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea,The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight,The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,Then God combined these qualities,

When there was nothing more to add,He knew His masterpiece was complete,

And so, He called it … Dad

All residents remember to send in your photos, stories, news, happenings, social events, charities, scout news, school news and more. Hunter's Green News is all about YOU! Residents send in your pictures to possibly be picked for the cover photo! For the Hidden Picture Contest this month, let's do something fun for Dads. Look for a small baseball. We hid it well in one of the ads, however if you find it and your name is picked, you will win a $25 gift card to a local restaurant. Send in photos and hidden picture entries to [email protected].

Closing Ceremony for our spring 2012 season was held on Friday night May 18th. We had over 1,000 people attend including our 800 plus players in softball and baseball. Bounce houses, pitching radar gun and dunk tank were all a huge success and lots of fun for the players and families. Two of our biggest sponsors, Firehouse Subs and Marcos Pizza, provided food for all to enjoy. The parade on the field began with the non-competitive teams marching on the field, followed by each park champion leading their competitive

division teams. Taliana Bosio, the league president led the park in the singing of the national anthem, followed by the renaming of field #3 at Live Oak Park to the "Monica B Wooden" field, in honor of her dedication and service to New Tampa Little League. During the sportsmanship awards ceremony, Ethan Clark lead the way with 8 home runs. This was the first year we believe an 11 year old won the Home Run King title. Charles Clark and Ed Thinger

were named Voluneteer of the Year recipients for their dedication above and beyond to the park over the last year. It was a beautiful night with great weather and fun times with friends and community to enjoy the end of another successfull NTLL season. Our 9/10 year old baseball all stars play starting June 23rd and our

9/10 and 11/12 softball all stars will be hosting the District 25 all star softball tournament starting June 23rd at the Live Oak fields behind Turner Elementary. vNew Tampa Little League

Does your family have an escape plan in case of a fire? If not, you should. According to Safe Kids USA, approximately 460 children ages 14 and under die each year in the United States in residential fires. In 2010, house fires claimed the lives of 132 people in Florida (10 from Hillsborough County) and injured an additional 3,665 people (206 from Hillsborough County). Fires can start easily, spread rapidly and intensify quickly. In less than 30 seconds, a small flame can turn into a major fire. In just minutes, a house can fill with thick black smoke and become engulfed in flames. Rebecca Kynes, an injury prevention expert at St. Joseph’s

Children’s Hospital reminds parents that no matter how or where a fire starts, installing a smoke alarm is the first step toward keeping your family safe. “Smoke alarms are one of the best safety devices you can use to protect your family and your home from fire,” said Kynes. “Installing a smoke alarm on every level of your house and outside of each sleeping area reduces the chance of dying in a fire by nearly half. Be sure to test smoke alarms every month and replace batteries once a year.” St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is currently distributing free smoke detectors for families in the Tampa area. the Safety Store at(813) 554-8510.According to Kynes, teaching children about the dangers of fire and how to escape can help prevent tragedy during a household fire. “There are time-tested ways to prevent and survive a fire,” said Kynes. “It’s not a question of luck. It’s a matter of preparation.” St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital recommends the following tips for parents and caregivers on how to prepare children in case of a residential fire.

Plan and Practice:• Identify two escape routes out of each room of the house. • Assign an adult to each child, regardless of age. This is especially vital for infants or children with special health care needs or mobility problems, and teens who can easily sleep through an alarm.• Practice fire drills at least twice a year. “Run through the exercise so the kids learn to leave quickly and not react by hiding in a closet or under the bed,” said Kynes.• Designate an outside meeting place so all members of the family can be

accounted for quickly.Teach Safety:

Children should know the sound of the smoke alarm. When they hear it, teach them to get outside quickly and crawl low if there is smoke. Touch doors with the back of your hand before opening them. If the door is hot, use an alternative exit. Teach children never to go back into a burning building for anything, such as a toy or pet.Be sure every family member knows how to “stop, drop and roll.” Teach children to never touch or play with matches, lighters, candles or gasoline. Be sure to set a good example. Never smoke in bed or disconnect smoke alarm batteries.

It was a hot spring evening when the tents were set up at the edge of the athletic track at Wharton High School. By 5:45 the inside field was crowded with people surrounding the stage in anticipation of the start of the 2012 Relay for Life in support ofthe American Cancer Society. For months our club members had worked to raise funds under the leadership of Sharon Gates and Bill Holster. Recognition was given to

Eileen Johnson who raised more than $4000 for the cause making her the top fundraiser. The result was that our club went to the Gold Level. The waning sun beat down on the participants who listened to personal testimonials from cancer survivors. It was an emotional moment with Carol City and Bill Holster on the stage as a young woman sang a song of tragedy and loss of a family member to cancer. “Cancer does not discriminate,” the lyrics went, “rich and poor good and bad, young and old.”

Scott Decker was camped out for the night feeding the hungry participants Marcos Pizza for $2 a slice all of which went to the cause. There was a constant flow of young people to the tent looking for pizzaas the night wore on. Past President Sherri caught a cat nap in her folding chair around 11 p.m. and planned to be there for the duration as did many members. Tents were set up for sleeping but everyone was still up and

walking the track. Ram Kancharla was there helping to serve the pizza and supervising. Eileen Johnson was still walking the track late at night after spending the early evening on her feet. She was there to show her dedication and support despite recovering from a serious operation. A special thanks to all who helped and participated. This was a labor of love and compassion by all thoseinvolved. (See all the photos at http://www.rcntevening.org/. v

Prom season is underway throughout the United States,

and inside the walls of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Nearly 100 current and former pediatric patients dressed up in fancy gowns and handsome tuxedo jackets, many donated by hospital employees, and took part in their own prom night held at the hospital on May 11th. Like all proms, the special evening included a mix of music, dancing, refreshments, keepsake photos and memories that are sure to last a lifetime. Children with chronic or life-threatening conditions sometimes miss or have to delay traditional childhood rituals, such as playing a team sport, slumber parties, learning to drive and participating in high school dances.

Child Life Specialists at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital organize special

events, like prom, in an effort to provide patients with experiences that they might not otherwise have due to treatment and hospitalization. Eighteen-year-old Daniel Myers is one of those patients. Born with hypoplastic left heart

syndrome, Daniel has undergone six heart surgeries in his lifetime and was in the hospital during his own high school prom last year. He was thrilled at the opportunity to attend prom,

and spent most of the evening on the dance floor. And because no child should have to miss prom because of an illness or injury, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital did not limit the prom to just high school patients. "For some seriously ill pediatric patients, attending this prom may have been a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Leah Frohnerath, child life supervisor at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. “We think it’s a night that every child should have, no matter how sick, which is why we gave all of our patients a chance to go to prom now.” v

The Cub Scouts of Pack 801, which meets at Hunter’s Green Elementary School, advanced to the next level of Scouting in a ceremony on Sunday, May 20th. Each Cub Scout was recognized as he walked across a bridge to symbolize his journey, completing one year of Scouts and moving on to the next. After dinner and the ceremony, the boys roasted marshmallows around a campfire to celebrate their many achievements.

Our year-round Scouting program includes camping and other outdoor activities, Pinewood Derby, field trips, and much more. Cub Scouts have lots of fun, adventure, and activities, and it’s not just about having fun. Cub Scouts is a program of the Boy Scouts of America for elementary-age students that focuses on character development and honoring the proud tradition of Scouting. On a recent camping trip, the boys and their families spent the weekend outdoors with activities that included outdoor cooking, canoeing, fishing, and Scouting favorites: archery and BB shooting. Cub Scout Pack 801 camps twice a year, usually at local Scout camps that provide a full weekend of fun for the boys, their siblings, and parents. We are currently welcoming new Scouts to our Pack. All boys who will be in first through fifth grade in the fall are invited to participate. Boys do not have to attend Hunter’s Green to join our Pack. Summer activities will include tubing, geocaching, and more! On Saturday, June 9, 45 Girl Scouts in west central Florida will receive their Girl Scout Gold Awards – the highest achievement in Girl Scouting – at a recognition event at the Museum of Science

and Industry in Tampa. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the culmination of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and the three keys to leadership: discover, connect, and take action. The award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in the areas of leadership, sustainable community service, career planning and personal development. A Girl Scout must be in at least ninth grade and successfully complete requirements before she begins

working on her Gold Award project. This year’s Girl Scout Gold Award recipients completed projects focused on a variety of community issues that will have a lasting impact, including

bringing awareness to the plight in Northern Uganda, creating memory books for foster kids, raising awareness about pet obesity, developing reading programs for younger kids, and planting 5,000 salt marsh plugs, just to name a few. “To earn a Gold

Award, a Girl Scout must take all of the knowledge, leadership and networking skills she has developed over the years and set forth to complete a service project that will benefit her community,” said Linda Babb, president, Girl Scouts of West Central Florida. “She must discover what it is that her community needs; connect with local businesses, organizations and neighbors; and take action to better the world around her,” Babb continued.

The 45 young women who recently earned Girl Scouts’ highest achievement reside in communities across west central Florida, including Hillsborough, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties. Girl Scouts spend a minimum of 80 hours planning and implementing their Gold Award projects, which have positive and lasting impacts on the community. The award is a dramatic example of how Girl Scouts’ all-girl setting gives girls leadership experiences so they can contribute to society now and in the future. In addition, A Girl Scout who has earned her Gold Award immediately rises one rank in any of the U.S. military branches and is eligible for a number of scholarships. Jamila Blake, Audrey Clark, Andrea Esinart and Anastasia Myers each received Girl Scouts of West Central Florida scholarships for their outstanding accomplishments in Girl Scouting, contributions to their local communities and their future aspirations following high school graduation. Jamila, Audrey, Andrea and Anastasia also each earned their Gold Award this year.

Girl Scouts of West Central Florida scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors pursuing a higher education. To receive a scholarship, the applicants must have been a Gold Award recipient; maintained a 3.0 GPA (or higher) throughout their high school career; detailed their Girl Scout accomplishments, community/volunteer awards, academic achievements and school activities, and plans for higher education; and submitted a 500-word essay reflecting how Girl Scouts has helped them to make their world and community a better place. Two of the scholarships were made available through the generosity of Girl Scout Troop 128, who donated a portion of their Girl Scout Cookie proceeds to support their sister Girl Scouts. For more information on Girl Scouting, please visit www.gswcf.org, or call (800) 881-4475. For more information on how to join, volunteer, reconnect or donate to Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, visit www.gswcf.org or call 800-881-4475. v
