Dear Hunter’s Green residents, Besides celebrating Valentine’s Day, make sure this month and in March, that you support Girl Scouts and buy lots of Girl Scout cookies. Thin Mints are my favorite. Speaking of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would give you a little cheat sheet for all the “love “ cards you will be sending out. Use one of these short endearments!

Even if the sun refused to shineEven if romance ran out of rhyme

You would still have my heartTill the end of time

I Love You

Hearts and flowers... Poetry...

Love songs... Ribbons and bows...

Yeah, I’d rather have the chocolate, too!Mom, Valentine’s Day and every day…

...you’re the heart of our family!

Happy Valentine’s Day to my first husband. That’s just to keep you on your toes!

I’m glad I married you.And I bet the kids are, too!

This Valentine’s DayI thought we would have

some good clean fun.Meet me in the tub.

Happy Valentine’s Day ...and now I’m going to say something

that will make you feel ecstatic...You have a chocolate deficiency.

This Valentine’s Day let’s not spend a fortuneon gifts for each other...

But I know how you hate to be told what to do!

Some women don’t need flowers, candy, or candlelight dinners

on Valentine’s Day.Please be advised thatI am not one of them.

This Valentine’s Day I wanta romantic meal...

Any place that doesn’t ask, ‘You want any fries with that?’

It’s not every day that I tell you I love you...

OK, maybe it is, but Valentine’s Day

is still special.

You always show how much you carewith the loving things you doFrom a tender kiss to a warm

embrace and whisper “I LOVE YOU”

Calling the bid process a “home run” for County garbage customers, Hillsborough County Commissioners voted unanimously in January, during a special workshop, to select a new service option that will bring automation to the way residential garbage and recyclables are collected from more than 250,000 households. Known as “2-1-1 Automated Service,” County residential garbage customers will continue to receive twice-weekly garbage collection, once-weekly recyclables collection, and once-weekly yard waste collection. But beginning this October, they will be bringing garbage and recyclables to the curb in wheeled carts provided

by the County for emptying by specially-equipped trucks. The current residential solid waste collection contracts, which have been in place for nearly 17 years, expire Sept. 30. Bids were sought last fall on four possible service options, including the current manual collection of garbage and recyclables. When the bids were tallied, all of the options meant lower costs for the County, and ultimately customers. The 2-1-1 Automated Service option is projected to save the County more than $7.5 million annually, a 22 percent reduction than if the current contracts had been renewed. Besides lower costs, the new

contract will enhance the financial integrity of the County’s solid waste system, County Administrator Mike Merrill told Commissioners during the workshop this afternoon. “This contract will allow us to get to a place we’ve never been before,” he said. Commissioners awarded contracts to private haulers for residential collection in each of five newly-defined districts during a regular Board meeting on Jan. 24th. Commercial customers will still be able to negotiate directly with any of the private haulers for collection. Commissioners expressed concern about job loss

when the automated option is implemented. Commissioner Al Higginbotham said he would be bringing back an agenda item to discuss what the County might be able to do to help. Commissioners made their decision following an extensive campaign to gather public input into how customers felt about the service options. v

It seems local homeowners are unknowingly throwing away hundreds of dollars each year on home insurance. According to Steve Barry, theaverage homeowner in this areapays about $320 more per year than they may have to. “In 2011 alone, 496 local homeownerspaid a combined$158,720 in unnecessary insurance fees. I think a lot of people are getting overcharged without even knowing it,” says Barry. Barry, the owner of the Steve Barry Great Florida Insurance Agency says he made this startling discovery after his agency added the savings for clients in the area. “I always knew a lot of homeowners were paying way too much on their policies, but I never realized just how much until earlier this year,” says Barry. Local resident Carmen Fonseca found out firsthand. “Steve saved us $509 a yearfrom where we had our (previous) insurance,” reports Fonseca.

According to Barry, the average homeowner was overpaying by 24% ($320 per year). Some local homeowners were getting overcharged by as much as 67%. “I think it’s a shame that people are commonly being misled by greedy insurance agents who care more about making a big commissioncheck than saving their clients money. As a result, many homeowners are basically flushing away hundreds ofdollars right down the drain,” says Barry. With recent layoffs in the area and real estate foreclosures dominating the headlines, Mr. Barry believes it’s time local residents received some good news, “I think people aretired of being told that they can’t save money on home insurance. I know that for some people, saving $300 or $400 per year could make a realdifference in their lives.” The Barry Agency, which prides itself on “offering better coverage at lower prices” shops around more

than 15 different providers to find the best rates available. The agency was recently appointed by a select group of “A” rated carriers to carry out a competitive home insurance program that other agencies in the area don’t have access to. Focused on a set of nine separate discounts, the program offers tremendous savings opportunities to homes built between 1983 and 2012 and manufactured homes built after 1995. Clients who have had their roof replaced or completed a “Wind Mitigation Inspection” can also expect to save hundreds in addition to the outrageously low rates that areavailable to local residents. “People who are looking to save some money on their home insuranceare urged to call our office today. Allcalls are kept strictly confidential andtake around five minutes to complete, plus we even guarantee same daycallbacks,” says Barry. You can call 813-991-6969 to find out if you qualify. This program expires soon.

The Barry Agency Steve Barry has owned ageniesthroughout Florida since his start in1981 with State Farm Insurance.Over the years Steve hasexpanded to multiple locations andis proud of the Great Florida namesince the inception in 1992. “Our business is built on trustand quality service. We’re always on call,” says Barry.Barry attributes much of hisagency’s success to his strong team. It’s more important than ever to have the right Realtor on your side. Shrinking inventory is boosting the values of homes for sale and for rent. Don’t get caught in the same old mindset and under-price your home. Realtors who have their finger on the pulse know how to market homes, keeping in mind the rule of supply and demand. The number of foreclosures has been declining, but short sales will be around for a while. In today’s market, it is critical for Realtors to have a combination of experience and educational credentials to assist sellers and buyers in successfully navigating the short sale process. The New Tampa zip code

33647 has sub markets within it and the values of homes will fluctuate differently based on the community in which a home is located. Here are a few facts to consider whether you are selling or buying a home in one of New Tampa’s sub markets (communities): Pebble Creek - Best value

due to the lowest HOA fees and no CDD fee, while offering a golf course within the community, a community pool and “A” rated elementary school. Arbor Green – Up and coming best

value due to CDD fee going away in 4 years and its HOA fee is only $70 per year, while offering a 24 hr. manned gated community, community pool and top quality tennis courts. Some of the most beautiful water view lots are found in this community. Hunter’s Green –Beautifully

maintained and well established. Private golf and country club within 24 hr manned gates. Elementary school within and an adjacent 17,000 acre preserve for biking hiking, etc.. No CDD fee. Some of the most beautiful conservation lots are found in this community. Depending on their personal situation, some homeowners are in a better position to rent their homes instead of selling them. Considering all options and making an informed decision is key. Please don't hesitate to contact me for a confidential consultation to discuss your options. Amani Warden, Realtor, 813-731-7673. v

Their expert medical team never once gave up on Chuck. Not after he flatlined. Not after they tried four times to

As the nation celebrates National Mentoring Month, it is important to let all mentoring-minded people know how much they matter.

Across the nation, Big Brothers Big Sisters is reconnecting with alumni Bigs, Littles, donors and family, staff and board members. The reunion effort is an extension of Start Something®, a national initiative Big Brothers

Big Sisters unveiled two years ago in partnership with the Ad Council. The effort invites all adults – not just volunteers -- to support quality mentoring to change the odds for children facing adversity. The 2013 nationwide search

and reunite effort extends Start Something to hundreds of thousands of people who have an affinity with Big Brothers Big Sisters, but have not been asked to stay or become re-engaged with the organization. Our

hope is that by bringing our alumni together and showing them how much we appreciate them, we will open avenues for people who are already invested in our work to “Start Something [Again]” to help kids succeed in school and life.

Each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves nearly 2,000 youth in Hillsborough, Polk and Pasco County. Most of them are children of single, low-income or incarcerated parents or sons and daughters of military personnel.

Longstanding independent research and Big Sisters Youth Outcomes Survey™ results find children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters improve in areas such as school, behavior and self-esteem. Today, as Big Brothers Big Sisters embarks on a nationwide search to reunite with former Bigs, Littles, donors and family, staff and board members, I encourage you to ask friends and family once involved to visit our websites and reconnect with us. And if you are the person with whom we have lost contact, we believe National Mentoring Month is a perfect time to Start Something [Again]. v

Peter Stilton is a Tampa artist who creates sophisticated whimsical paintings in a variety of themes and media that are inspired in part by the “fete” paintings of Rococo France. A full-time artist for three decades with over 40 solo shows in the U.S. and France, including La Sorbonne, his work is in private and corporate collections in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. Honors include work in the state collection of France (Office of the Mayor of Paris at Hotel de Ville) and in the permanent collection of the Springfield, MA, Museum of Fine Arts. Stilton’s lyrical style has been described as linear expressionism with diverse subject matter, including symbolic geometric abstracts. His art draws the viewer into a world of visual surprises and sophisticated whimsy. “My work is a kaliedoscope of all the places, colors and images I experience," Stilton states. "It is a congruence of the past and present moment with a tangent that points to the future. Figurative or rhythmically abstract, my paintings reveal a substantive mental world beyond the material prose of existence. Child-like trust opens the doors to new vistas and imaginative juxtapositions where images

change dimension and properties in uncharted and delightful ways, such as the pure joy of color and line, or the Chippendale chairs, Rolls-Royces, pipe organs, and cellos all enjoying the beach.” For more information about the artist, visit his website stiltonstudio.com. The North Tampa Arts League meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at Compton Park, 16101 Compton Drive, from 7 - 9 pm. v

its eight-county jurisdiction of Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sumter counties. Through the Cookie Program, girls build five essential life skills: goal setting, money management, decision making, people skills and business ethics. Empower girls to become future leaders by supporting the Girl Scout Cookie program.

Whichever your favorite Girl Scout Cookie – Thin Mints,

Tagalongs, or Samoas – the wait is over! Through March 16th, thousands of Girl Scouts will take orders for your favorite Girl Scout Cookie varieties,

including Do-Si-Dos, Dulce de Leche, Samoas®, Tagalongs®, Thank You Berry Munch, Thin Mints, Trefoils and returning for a second year due to its popular 100th anniversary debut – the Savannah Smiles!

To celebrate the 500th year of the founding of Florida, the Tampa-Hillsborough County Library System is seeking

artwork for display. It's been 500 years since Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon stumbled onto the eastern shores of Florida

in search of the Fountain of Youth. To celebrate Viva Florida 500, Tampa-Hillsborough

County Public Libraries is inviting Florida artists to apply to have their artwork displayed in a library community room for ongoing exhibits

throughout the year. Works with local flavor and those of general appeal are considered good candidates for the display.Interested artists should:• Include a cover letter including brief biographical information, a list of recent exhibitions or shows, and other interesting information about the artist or artwork.• Submit at least three, but not more than five, examples of the kind and style of artwork they intend to exhibit.• Submit materials by mail with digital images on a CD to: John F. Germany Public Library, Attn: Stacey Jurewicz, 900 N. Ashley Dr., Tampa FL 33602, or via email to: [email protected].• Note exact size of artwork in the submission.• Submit applications between Jan. 15 and March 31.

Exhibition guidelines:• The artwork will be displayed at specific branch libraries for a period of two months with no fee to the artist.• The artist must bring artwork ready to hang on designated wall space at a mutually agreed upon date and time.• An art reception will be held during the exhibition and the artist may present a brief summary about their artwork.• Control over the exhibition, its publicity (including exhibit photos), placement of artwork and exhibition duration rests entirely with Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Libraries. For information, contact Stacey Jurewicz, Library Services, 813-273-3652. v

Unless you've been living under a rock the last few years, you know that Food Trucks are the latest rage for foodies, hipsters, or anyone who wants to try unique and freshly prepared gourmet fare on the go. Most major U.S.

cities host food truck rallies, and the Tampa Bay area is no exception. These rallies often include live music as entertainment for the hungry hordes that descend in droves. One of the more popular events is called Flicks

The Food Truck Revolution Rolls into Tampa Neighborhoodsby Ann MacKinnon & Food Trucks, held on the

third Thursday of every month from 6 - 10 pm. This venue offers a varied selection of 10 - 15 gourmet food trucks as well as independent short films, predominantly created by Florida filmmakers.

The Flicks and Food Truck website offers this advice

for first timers: Some trucks take credit cards, but not all trucks do. Plan to expect waiting in line for your orders. While the food is worth the wait, it does not come fast because it’s not “fast food”. These are full blown restaurants on wheels and food is made to order. Plan to experience more than one food truck. Everyone serves something different so ordering small is key!

Consider it similar to tailgating: Most people stand and eat at Food Truck events. If you are one who likes to sit and eat, then stake out a spot on a curb or bring a chair! Be sure to bring cash for your purchases. Vendors appreciate small bills vs. 10’s & 20’s. Go to http://www.tampabaymarkets.com/flicks-and-food-trucks for more information about this event. Or go to www.tastingtampa.com for other events, such as the Mayor's Food Truck Fiesta each month. You can also follow Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally on facebook to get the latest details about other locations. To keep up with the street

food vendors that are roaming the Tampa Bay area each day, there's a new "app" for iphones or Android devices. Truckspotting.com outfits local food trucks with real-time GPS units and personally meets with the individual vendors to make sure accurate information and weekly calendars are provided to the hungry public. Finding your favorite organic bistro on wheels, mobile burger joint or favorite taco truck will no longer be a guessing game! v
