The academic summer 2013 programs for high school juniors and seniors expose

students to university-level learning. The University of South Florida’s Pre-College 2013 is now opening registration for

summer academic programs for junior and senior high school students.

Students may enroll in one or more of nine programs, selecting from a broad spectrum of academic disciplines. Programs range from two days to four weeks and offer overnight

(residential) or day (commuter) access. USF Pre-College 2013 provides students with opportunities to explore

university-level learning in an intensive, exciting and enjoyable on-campus environment. They can explore interdisciplinary studies and experience USF research firsthand while gaining exposure to potential careers. This year’s program brings a strong science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) focus by offering several STEM-based academies. “Students who enter college with prior exposure to state-of-the-art STEM research are uniquely positioned to engage faculty in undergraduate research activities that will enhance their academic performance and provide them with a competitive advantage in the job market and admission to graduate and professional programs,” says STEM Academy Director Richard Pollenz.

Toilets About 75 percent of the water used inside a home is used in the bathroom. Half of that is used by the toilet. Frequently a toilet can leak silently, wasting hundreds of gallons per month. The main culprit for leaks is the flapper or stop valve at the bottom of the tank. If it fails, water constantly seeps into the bowl. You can test to see if the flapper is not working properly by adding a few drops of colored food dye into the tank. Wait about 15 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, then the flapper is leaking and should be replaced. Please be sure to get the correct flapper for your particular toilet

model. After the test, flush the toilet to prevent the dye from staining your fixture. According to statistics, it is estimated that a toilet is flushed 20 times a day by a family of four. If you don't already have an ultra-low-flow toilet, that would be a wise first step to conserving. Older models use 3.5, 5 or 7 gallons per flush. The savings will depend on which model you have. Maybe you have heard those horror stories of having to double flush each time with a low-flow toilet. Admittedly, early attempts at making low-flow toilets were dismal and resulted in repeated flushing by frustrated customers and a bad

reputation. Newer models have largely overcome these and use only 1.6 gallons per flush.

Bathtubs The average bathtub will hold 40 to 60 gallons completely filled. You can save 20 gallons by bathing in a half-filled tub.

Showers Showering accounts for about 20 percent of the water used in the home. Taking a shorter shower can save 3 to 6 gallons for each minute. By reducing shower time by 5 minute you could save 15 to 30 gallons each time. If you install a new showerhead

(maximum 2.5 gallons per minute flow rate) you will save water and still have an enjoyable shower. You can also add a temporary shut-off device at the showerhead to further reduce the flow while lathering. Showerheads are available to Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department customers at no cost by contacting customer service at 272-6680.

Sinks Turn it off. The chief source of waste at a sink is from turning it on and leaving it running while brushing teeth or shaving. Installing a low flow aerator may cut the flow by 5 gallons a minute, which will add up quickly. Free aerators are also available from customer service at 272-6680. Next month we will have more water saving tips. v

I Will Inspire 5kA Day of Celebration for Participants and their Supporters The I Will Inspire 5k Race was held February 16th in

Telecom Park. Over 500 people of all abilities participated in the charity event organized by the New Tampa Junior Woman's Club. The goal of the race was to inspire athletes to embark on a journey of self achievement, whether it was a first time runner or a recovering veteran. Partnering with the I WILL Foundation and Building Homes for Heroes, the woman's club's hope was to encourage people facing adversity to live their lives to the fullest by achieving goals that they thought were otherwise unattainable. The I Will Inspire 5k race was an emotional and uplifting day for all. v Photos courtesy of Constance Avellino Photos

Whether it was the increased hours of operation for adoptions, continued support from rescue groups and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, or all the special adoption promotions, Hillsborough County Animal Services had more animals leave the shelter alive in

"We still have a long way to go to reach our goals, and we can't get there overnight,” said Ian Hallett, the new Hillsborough County Animal Services Director. “But it shows that we are on the right path and that the public supports us." Hallett’s main goal to

rOtArACt Club

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for dedicated volunteers ages 18 to 30, who want to make the world a better place. Their goals are self development and fellowship through service. They strive to better our local and international communities while growing as leaders and young

professionals. They meet the first Wednesday at The Green Lemon on South Howard and the third Wednesday at Avalon Heights at 7:30 pm. Rotaract is a global network of young people who are changing the world with clubs in over 160 countries. Their recent volunteer events have included:Sweetwater Organic Farms: They recently helped Sweetwater Organic Farms, a community-supported urban organic farm and environmental education center, harvest and wash vegetables in order to distribute them to members of the farm and promote organic and sustainable farming. Feeding America: They went to the Feeding America warehouse in south Tampa, along with the Rotary Club of New Tampa Evening, in order to sort and pack donated food. Gasparilla 5K:

They volunteered at the 5K to distribute water to the participants during and after the event.Mud Run, Benefiting the Humane Society: Rotaract members assisted at the obstacle course-style marathon. They have chosen to focus on animal welfare as their main focus of service this year.Peace River Refuge: On the topic of animal welfare, they are currently planning a day trip to Silver Springs where they can help the Peace River Refuge Forest Animal Rescue build its sanctuary. The sanctuary is in the midst of a relocation and they have contacted the owners to discuss the Tampa Rotaract Club helping build habitats for the various animals they care for like wolves, bears, primates, etc. Their Social events have included:A pancake party: Last month they had a pancake

party, where members brought different toppings and they all made their "ideal" pancakes by mixing and matching the toppings into the batter. It was a lot of fun, despite the mess!Bowling: Members went bowling (after volunteering at Feeding America) in order to promote the fellowship within their club, and show off their bowling skills, or lack thereof. Anyone who is interested in attending meetings or events please contact the club via email at [email protected], or call Richard Crouse at 386-336-6348. Or you can "like" the club's facebook page and inquire though that. v
