8K Super Hi-Vision and its 22.2 Multichannel Sound Promotion at Avant Premiere Music + Media Market

NAB SHOW 2017, the world largest broadcasting trade show, was held in Las Vegas, US on April 24th through 27th. NHK exhibited our latest technologies including an 8K theater using a bright projector system, two living rooms with 8K equipment and its 22.2 multichannel sound system, 8K HEVC codec together with wireless link for 8K production, real-time spatial resolution measurement for UHDTV cameras, Augmented TV, and automatic generation of audio de-scription. The exhibits attracted many visitors. They could recognize the potential of 8K content screened with the bright projector system at the 8K theater and could imagine how the future living room with the 8K system will be.

The theme of the show was “M.E.T.” that stands for media entertainment technology. This year, IP-based production, UHDTV, IT-utilizing broadcasting, and VR were focused on. NHK STRL Open House, our annual event held on May 25th through 28th, will cover some of those topics at keynote speeches, symposia, and demonstrations. On February 12 through 15, NHK screened content in an 8K Super Hi-Vision (8K) theater and gave a technology presentation at Avant Premiere Music + Media Market Berlin 2017, hosted by IMZ*. This event gathers specialists from the broadcasting, production, theater, and movie industries as well as music production and international standardization professionals. We presented 8K content on a 192-inch screen and 22.2 multichannel (22.2 ch) sound system, providing an exciting experience and showing a range of programs including music and art. A technical presentation gave an overview of 8K

technology and particular details including the principles and features of 22.2 ch sound, production systems, and home reproduction technologies. Attendees made comments such as, “It’s just like being in the concert theater!” “It’s perfect for 22.2 ch audio content,” and “We certainly want to collaborate on 8K content,” and we cultivated new possibilities for 8K production. We will continue to expand and promote 8K broadcast program production technologies and create more opportunities to experience the best content in the world through the 8K and its 22.2 ch sound systems.
