In January 2014, ACCENTUS Music filmed NCPA’s production of Mo-zart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, directed by Seville-born José Luis Castro. The Leipzig production company thus continued its successful co-oper-ation with the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. The co-operation was initiated in 2013, when ACCENTUS Music, as the first independent production company, filmed two NCPA productions: Na-bucco, starring Plácido Domingo in the title role, followed by an im-pressive scenic Gala Concert on the occasion of the bicentennial of Gi-useppe Verdi’s birth. In March 2014, ACCENTUS Music, in close co-oper-ation with acclaimed feature film di-rector Zhang Yimou, will be filming his production of the original Beijing Opera You and Me.

CLASART CLASSIC

Clasart Classic To Continue Co-operation With The Cleveland Orchestra And Franz Welser-Möst

After the successful recording of the Bruckner cycle, Clasart Classic continues its close collaboration with The Cleveland Orchestra under the baton of its principal conductor Franz Welser-Möst. In the focus of this co-operation is the oeuvre of Jo-hannes Brahms, which is to be pre-sented in its full spectrum: from the violin concerto with Julia Fischer to the two piano concertos, starring ac-claimed pianist Yefim Bronfman, and the symphonies.

The Cleveland Orchestra’s Brahms cycle just started with the recording of the composer’s Academic Festi-val Overture, of the violin concerto and of the Symphony No. 4 at Cleve-land’s neo-classical gem Severance Hall, the orchestra’s home base. For the recording of Brahms’ violin concerto, Franz Welser-Möst and his orchestra were joined by Julia Fischer, whose “magnificent” perfor-mance was hailed by the press: “Be-tween pure tone and forceful, ardent manner, she represented the ideal Brahms protagonist.” (The Plain Dealer).

As befits its enormous presence on both sides of the Atlantic, The Cleve-land Orchestra will be recording the Brahms cycle not only at Severance Hall, but also on guest tours to Lon-don’s Royal Albert Hall and to the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, both in September 2014.

Clasart Classic is recording the con-certs in HD quality and with 5.1 Sur-round Sound.

IDÉALE AUDIENCE

Maurizio Pollini – Man and Master (WT)

A unique film portrait of the famous Italian pianist; selected to compete at the Festival International des Pro-grammes Audiovisuels (21 – 26 Janu-ary 2014, Biarritz, France) and at the International Festival Films on Arts (20 – 30 March 2014, Montreal). Classical music lovers around the world are eagerly awaiting these two events…

Maurizio Pollini felt himself that the time had come to submit to the prob-ing of the camera, an exercise made all the more necessary because of his usual avoidance of the public eye. In Man and Master, he discusses a richly complex range of topics with lively wit and intelligence. In addition to some biographical details, the film covers his musical experience, from the Chopin Piano Competition to avant-garde music; the people whose paths he has crossed, includ-ing Abbado, Böhm and Boulez; his repertoire (from Bach to Nono); and his political commitment in Italy dur-ing the Years of Lead, and more. Directed by Bruno Monsaingeon and co-produced by Idéale Audience, Arte France and SRF. Distribution: EuroArts. Works by Beethoven, Chopin, Schu-mann, Boulez, Nono, Schoenberg, StockhausenDuration: 54 min.

POORHOUSE INTERNATIO-NAL LTD.

After Music in the Air and Dance on Screen, Reiner Moritz is current-ly preparing a documentary for Tel-mondis entitled Roland Petit – The Entertainer.Roland Petit is probably the most successful choreographer of our time. Who else can boast more than 5,000 performances of one of his or her ballets?Roland Petit has achieved this record with his Carmen, dancing the piece together with Zizi Jeanmaire, who became his muse, at least 2,000 times himself. He also discovered Leslie Caron who will tell how she later gave him a helping hand in Hollywood. The one-hour documentary will draw on Telmondis’ large collection of ballets by the choreographer, an earlier bi-ography and a show with the chore-ographer remembering his creative career. Interviews with dancers, cho-reographers, critics and foes will for the first time draw a proper picture of a great artist whose vanity did not allow anybody else beside him.

As the Hollywood feature film clips will cost an arm and a leg, Poorhouse will be grateful for any presales.

New Productions In Windrose’s Line-Up

Narrated by Thomas Hampson, Of Love, Death And Beyond (52min./88min.) explores how a 27 year-old Gustav Mahler engaged the most difficult question of life – what is death? – and established himself as a symphonist. The result is his monumental Resurrection Symph-ony. Historical reenactments and interviews with the world’s most respected Mahler scholars guide

the viewer, with performances of the New York Philharmonic and Phila-delphia Orchestra under the directi-on of Neeme Järvi.

At the Chorégies of Orange, A Mas-ked Ball (125min.), Verdi's opera, is re-created based on the original libretto by Antonio Somma, which had been censored. It re-establishes the truth about the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden. 6-min. backstage TV report available.Watch the trailer here.
