FILM FESTIVAL AT WIENER

RATHAUSPLATZ 2012

Summer ends in Vienna together with

the biggest open air music film festival in

the world…

From 30 June – 2 September, a total of

47 productions were featured during

the 65 festival evenings in front of

Vienna’s City Hall for an audience of

625.000 people – a fine selection of

music films, including classical, jazz, ballet

and world music highlights.

For the first time one day of the

“classical” week was dedicated to

popular music gems. Thus we had it all:

Anastacia and Tosca, Carmen and Katie

Melua, Bryn Terfel and Elvis Presley,

Andrea Bocelli and Benvenuto Cellini,

Nutcracker and Scheherazade … There

was opera as well as The Phantom of

the Opera, Baroque celebrations as well

as Pavarotti and friends!

Furthermore, in the framework of 50th

anniversary of Vienna’s reknown film

festival Viennale, we showed milestones

of concert-film-making from  D.A.

Pennebaker’s Monterey Pop and Elvis

Presley: ’68 Comeback Special to Martin

Scorseses Shine A Light.

Once again, a splendorous celebration

of tradition and the contemporary, the

Film Festival turned the Wiener

Rathausplatz into the vibrant heart of a

city of music...

Music in the Air – A History of Classical Music on Television

DVD out now!

The documentary Music in the Air by Reiner E. Moritz was made for the IMZ –

International Music + Media Centre – to celebrate its 50th birthday.

Music on television has come in various guises over the last 50 years. It was

already part of the programme mix in the very beginnings and is still around,

reaching millions – at any rate more people

than those experiencing music in opera

houses, concert halls or other venues.

Television has been instrumental in

popularizing music, preserving precious

moments of music making and helping to

create music andperformances which would

not exist without it…

The DVD has been released in August 2012.

Watch the trailer for Music in the Air here.

been making award-winning documentary films for cinema, television and DVD

for over 25 years.

Phil’s internationally-acclaimed films have had great theatric success: in Australia,

both In Search of Mozart and In Search of Beethoven have become all-

time top 100 grossing documentaries. With In Search of Haydn, Phil Grabsky

recently completed his trilogy of the great Viennese composers. Not only have

the films been televised in Germany and Austria but, as DVDs, they are among

the few biographical films on sale in each of the composers’ homes.  For the

three biographical films, Phil Grabsky filmed over 200 interviews and 100

concerts with many of the world’s greatest musicians.

Currently in production is the much anticipated In Search of Chopin.

We have also produced Piano Notes (a 26-part series of  8-12’ filmspresented

by top pianist Ronald Brautigam). Piano Notes takes the viewer on a potted

history of piano music.

On Stage with ….Chopin’s Special Birthday Concert is another

award-winning film: recorded (multi-camera in HD) in Warsaw during the

2010 anniversary concerts, it is a rare concert that includes all of Chopin’s

six orchestral pieces performed by some of the world’s leading pianists.

Phil is currently filming THE PIANIST & BEETHOVEN – a long-term

portrait of Leif Ove Andsnes and his studies and performances of the

five Beethoven piano concerti.

Phil Grabsky has also made dozens of history films for the BBC & others;

Making War Horse for Channel 4, the world’s first 3D visual arts film:

Tim Marlow on British Sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts

for Sky – and over 120 arts films presented by Tim Marlow for a

worldwide audience. Recently, PhilGrabskyFilms.com scored a major hit

with Leonardo Live: a global first, bringing the National Gallery

exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan live to cinemas

across the world. Our strand EXHIBITION is now working with the

world’s leading galleries to produce more art exhibition films for cinema,

SONO ARTISTS CONSULTING

Soprano Rebecca Nelsen Appears In ORF And Metafilms Documentary

Soprano Rebecca Nelsen appears in the new TV documentary

Ein Dorf in der Großstadt: die Grundsteingasse in Ottakring, a

film by Martin Betz about the artistic lives that have touched Vienna's Grundsteingasse, an

area much like New York's Greenwich

Village. The film, sponsored by the Film

Fonds Wien and Cinestyria, is a co-

production of Metafilms and the ORF

and will air on 16 September on

ORF 2 at 11:00 p.m.

In July, jumping in for an indisposed Diana

Damrau, Rebecca Nelsen made her

Munich Opera Festival debut alongside

baritone Michael Volle and the brass of

the Bavarian State Opera. Other debuts this season include concerts with The Cleveland

Orchestra under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst in Carmina Burana, and her role debut of

Konstanze with Garsington Opera. Rebecca also joins the roster of the Vienna Volksoper,

NEW PRODUCTIONSCLASART CLASSIC

The Cleveland Orchestra’s Bruckner

Cycle

Clasart Classic continues the Cleveland

Orchestra’s Bruckner cycle with the

recording of Bruckner’s Symphony No.

4.

The Baroque monastery of St. Florian near

Linz, Austria, is not only Anton Bruckner’s first

place of activity. According to his wish the

composer and organist was also buried

underneath “his” great organ to which he

owed so much inspiration and fame. Also Franz

Welser-Möst has strong ties to this place and

its unique atmosphere. Like Bruckner himself,

his own career keeps bringing him back to this

splendid, perfectly preserved basilica with its

abundance of ornamental art.

After the recordings of the Symphonies No. 5,

7, 8 and 9 at Severance Hall in Cleveland,

Vienna’s Musikverein and St. Florian, this

performance marks the fifth installment in The

Cleveland Orchestra’s Bruckner cycle, which is

being captured for posterity by Clasart Classic

on 31 August / 1 September 2012. With its

transparent sound, which recalls less a typically

American top orchestra than a European one,

the famous Cleveland Orchestra will show

once more its profound understanding of

Bruckner’s music.

“One could feel that Welser-Möst was someone

who was breathing with the composer, tracking

down what was still to be discovered between the

lines and, above all, beyond the common, incense-

heavy performance practice: the passionate, wildly

expressive symphonist.” Vienna daily Die Presse

SOCIAL DESIGN – ARTS AS URBAN INNOVATION

New Master Programme At The University Of Applied Arts Vienna And The Konservatorium Wien University (Starting Fall 2012)

„Both our society and the art system are in transition. Therefore, it is imperative that a university of art must help to

shape this paradigmatic process of transformation rather than suffer from its effects.“

Today, more than half of the world population lives in cities. A development putting enormous pressure on cities

as complex, self-generating environments. In order to accommodate this global tendency, new concepts are

needed that address the overall process of knowledge production in society. Especially art universities are

predestined to formulate these new, distinct perspectives on the inherent logic of cities and the corresponding

dynamics of their processes.

Thus the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Konservatorium Wien University have

implemented a new master degree programme dedicated to challenges that emerge within urban social

systems and the broad spectrum of related issues. The objective is to integrate diverse disciplinary expertise

when dealing with the complexity of urban systems.

Submission deadline: 14 September! Please submit documents per e-mail to [email protected].
