On 12 June, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony will release a

hybrid SACD recording of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and

the album is now available exclusively on the iTunes Store, and the San Francisco

The new release continues the SFS’s ongoing exploration of the music of

three concert programmes that explore Beethoven’s earliest inspirations and how

they informed not only his own style but that of composers who came long after.

Over the course of two weeks the journey traces Beethoven’s advanced and often

revolutionary musical ideas, culminating in performances of one of his most

significant works, Missa solemnis. Also next season, the St. Lawrence String

Quartet joins the Orchestra once again for performances of John Adams’s

Cellist Pieter Wispelwey will be celebrating his 50th birthday in a grand manner. He

is performing at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam on the 22nd and 23rd of

September in his "Carte Blanche" weekend. On the first of these two nights he

will also be presenting his new recording of the Suites for Cello Solo by J. S. Bach,

looking forward to this album: will the unique Pieter Wispelwey excel above

His previous recording of the Suites is from 1998, already a considerable while

ago. Since that date he has performed these pieces innumerable times. Wispelwey

has developed immensely, both as a musician and as a person; he will use all these

experiences whilst recording his 3rd version. “It will be deeper, richer, more

intense”, Wispelwey states. “The older I get, the more poignant and lively the

pieces get, I more and more want to tell my own story.“

A DVD will be added to the double SACD, containing a live concert in the

renowned Holywell Music Room in Oxford. In addition the DVD will contain

fascinating conversations between Pieter Wispelwey and two of the most

renowned Bach scholars of our time: Laurence Dreyfus and Johan Butt. Dreyfus is

The documentary Hubert von Goiserns Wirtshaustour has won the prestigious Austrian TV award in the
