    1589, the "Escuela Pia" was entrusted by thegovernment to the Jesuits. Later, this wascalled Ateneo de Municipal (Ateneo de ManilaUniversity)

    Dominicans, the University of Santo Tomas,that was opened in 1611. In 1630, the "SanJuan de Letran" for the orphaned boys."Colegio de Santa Potenciana" was the firstschool and college for girls (1589).

    Colegio de Santa Isabel (1632).The religious congregations also establishedschools for the orphaned girls called "beaterio.
