INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH

Cindy Bower

It is hard to believe that 2016 is already in full swing, and that our spring calendar is already getting full. In late March 2016 (date still TBD), International Outreach will conduct a shoe cutting party for Sole Hope, which pro-vides shoes for children in Uganda. I am currently waiting for our package of materials to arrive, but, in the meantime, please collect old jeans and plastic bottles and bring them to the clubhouse (ideally, at the February meeting). As you may recall, the denim forms the basis for the shoes and the plastic bottles are cut for the soles. If you are interested in participating in the shoe cutting party, let me know that as well.

In April-May 2016, we hope to host an ice cream social at the Woman’s Club for the international students studying English prior to entering University of Tampa. If you are interested in attending the party and conversing with the students, please let me know. Given the large number of students, we would like to have as many TWC partici-pants as space will allow. Alternatively, you can donate money for ice cream and toppings (or provide the ice cream and toppings themselves.)

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has donated medicine bottles for the Medicine Bottles for Malawi Pro-ject. I will be shipping a box of bottles in late February so if you have any bottles to donate, please get them to the clubhouse as soon as possible.

In closing, Happy Presidents Day…don’t forget to check out this month’s Geography Quiz to see how many for-eign presidents you can identify.

Evening Group

Judi Snyder ~ Chairman

Hello Lovely Ladies,

Welcome 2016 January 7 meeting! Welcome to our new provisional Christine Bard Grant! We are happy to expand our Ladies of the night group!

Mostly a “catch up” meeting on events that are taking place and the Gasparilla Kids Day Food Truck Rental in lieu of us volunteering and selling our items. However we still need a few volunteers for door checking wrist bands etc… Email [email protected] if you are interested. The night group would like to offer extra support for the silent auction in way of donations since the day group is graciously taking over the responsibility. We agreed on at least 2 donations each at a minimum but by all means if you can do more, go for it!

Some ideas:

Restaurant, gym, massage studios or day spas Shopping (Amazon, Publix, Trader Joes etc…) gift cards New items we received as gifts but haven’t used Gift baskets Homemade arts and crafts items (quilts, paintings, ceramics), Framed artwork, vases, etc… Electronics

See you February 4th.

Judi

Our Hamburger Mary's Fund Raiser event was very successful! We made $1100.00 between the Bingo Ticket sales and the 50/50 drawing. Our committee prepared 10 baskets as prizes for the bingo winners (I won one for the first time!) Maybe I won because the Drag Queen Performer called me 'Lucille Ball" - I didn't know if I should be mad or flattered!

At any rate we had an amazing turnout and everyone had a great time and good food plus any drinks they wanted. It was a happy crowd and a good time was had by all. I understand that that our team for the Dog Fest Walk/Run raised about $1000.00 as well. We made over $1100 at our Spring Hamburger Mary's event that we had to split with another charity, but that means that altogether we raised $3200.00.

The best part of all three events was that we all had fun, laughed a lot and had a great time. Thank you to all the team members and committee members for providing the prizes at Hamburger Mary's and who donated the gifts for the prizes. We can all be proud of the group and of our showing for the President's Project. Providing service ani-mals to veterans with PTSD and to others who have mental health issues or live alone and need a trustworthy ser-vice dog to love and protect them.

Thanks again to all who participated. We couldn't have done it without your support.

Have a love filled month and fill the extra day of this month with kindness and good deeds.

Happy February, friends.

Greetings and best wishes for this special month of February. We all will have an extra day this year as February will be a Leap Year month. So many special days occur in this month that it is hard to believe so many events can occur in the shortest month of the year. Did you know that February is the only month that begins and ends on the same weekday and it is the most frequently misspelled month of the year! In addition, there will be NO full moon in February until 2018!!!

American Heart month, Black History month, American History month and Chocolate Lovers’ month are also celebrated in February. The birthstone for February is the beautiful amethyst and the flower is the Violet (some say it is also the primrose.) If your birthday is this month, there are two birth signs for February: Aquarius (1/20 to 2/18) and Pisces (2/19 to 3/20.) Remember that February also cele-brates Random Acts of Kindness Week and International Friendship Week.

Other special days of the month include Ground Hog Day on February 2; our 40th President Ronald Reagan’s birthday on February 6; Super Bowl Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on February 7; Ash Wednesday on February 10; the 16th President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on Febru-ary 12; Valentine’s Day on the 14th of the month; President’s Day on Monday, February 15; and our first President, George Washington’s birthday is officially on February 22nd.

Conservation ~ JoAnn Leal

Hope everyone is enjoying this wintery weather! As the Conservation CSP gears up again in the new year, work slow-ly continues on updating our club entrances. They look much brighter after a recent (free!) pressure washing, and we can now see what we have to deal with regarding repairs and potential updating.

Mark your calendar! Our next Bayshore Blvd clean-up is scheduled for Saturday morning, March 5, 2016. This will be in conjunction with a Tampa wide clean-up occurring that day with our partner, Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful. More information, times, etc. at our next general meeting, and through email reminders.

Other conservation events that take place in February include:

On Saturday, February 13, Tampa Bay Watch (3000 Pinellas Bayway S.,Terra Verde) will be presenting "Bay Life", an art exhibit reflecting Tampa estuary wildlife by 8 local artists. Food trucks and additional event tables will also be available.

The 2016 Florida State Fair will have an exhibit called the "Florida Learning Garden", located just inside gate 3 at the fairgrounds. This exhibit will be open throughout the state fair duration.

Hope to see you at our next general meeting!

We will be collecting gowns, shoes, and purses for Belle of the Ball for the next couple of months. If you have any to donate please hang them in the powder room and we will see that they get to the facility so the girls have an opportunity to choose a gown for their homecoming or prom.

The Silent Auction items for Fashionollia are starting to come in but we still need your help. Please see if you can contribute some items for the auction. There are plastic tubs in the office you can put them in and don't forget to fill out the form with your name, item, and amount of item.

February 5th is National Wear Red Day. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, killing more women than all forms of cancer combined. Why is red the color for the cause? Because it's the color of our hearts!

Make your heart health a priority. Schedule your Well-Woman Visit, a preventive check up to measure your blood pressure, check your cholesterol and look for signs of heart disease, stroke, and other illnesses. Then encourage your friends and family to do the same. Celebrate February 5th by wearing red and encourage women's awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.
