GFWC Sisters:
Unlike the past winter,
summer has gone by at an
accelerated pace. I am looking
forward to attending upcoming
Fall District Conventions. I feel
fortunate that my presidential
responsibilities include
attendance at each convention.
Each is so creative and different
but yet so well done. So proud
of you all!
I am hoping that each of you
will be able to attend District
Convention. For my part, you
will see some serious “thinking
outside the box” in
presentations as well as
fundraising. (You can do that in
the second year of a two-year
term!)
We will be celebrating the
100th anniversary of the
women’s suffrage movement,
an effort that extended over
decades. Many GFWC
clubwomen worked around the
clock to help ensure our
equality at the voting booths.
I am so impressed with what
each of your clubs has
accomplished this part year.
I’m looking forward to giving
extra recognition to clubs that
have “nailed” my president’s
projects and one or more
sections of the Seven Grand
Initiatives at our April 23-24,
2020, State Convention. We
will make every effort to get you
the recognition that is so
deserved!
Hope to see you soon!
Message from the President
Seven Grand Initiatives _______________________________________________________________________________________________________
GFWC International President,
Mary Ellen Brock, had
ambitious goals for her Seven
Grand Initiatives. With our
help, almost every goal was
crushed and new, HIGHER
goals have been added.
I thought it would be fun to
set our own GFWC/Iowa goals.
Looking forward to what we
can accomplish!
Goals For Iowa's part of Seven
Grand Initiatives:
Initiative #1 — That 15 service
projects can be done in
conjunction with Martin Luther
King Day of Service, Monday,
January 20th, 2020.
Initiative #2 — That five
projects can be done to support
"Women in the Military.”
Initiative #3 — That we as an
Iowa leadership team, together
with GFWC/Iowa clubs, can
contribute $1,000 to President
Mary Ellen Brock's Million
Dollar Campaign for
preservation and improvements
at our National Headquarters in
Washington DC.
Initiative #4 — That 50 more
GFWC/Iowa members will
"join" the Legislative Action
Center.
Initiative #5 — That 100 trees
be planted on Federation Day
and Arbor Day, Friday, April 24,
2020.
Initiative #6 — That 400 pairs
of shoes be donated to the
Soles for Souls program.
Initiative #7 — That 200
Dr. Seuss books be donated to
local day cares and schools
with emphasis on low-income
areas. That we read to children
in seven preschools or schools
on Dr Seuss's Birthday.

Domestic Violence GFWC Signature Project _______________________________________________________________________________
… from the President (cont’d)
Here are a few suggestions
that can be made part of your
club work. Think outside of the
box! Put a new slant on an
idea…
1. Collect teddy bears to give to
a child advocacy center where
children are interviewed and
examined for possible abuse.
2. Collect gently used purses or
tote bags. Fill them with health
and/or beauty supplies and take
them to the local shelter.
3. Come up with a new program
in this area. Check if funding
might be available at Target or
Walmart under their community
development grants.
4. Have a white ribbon
campaign—an international
effort of men and boys working
to educate and end violence
against women. White ribbons
can be distributed to high school
and college athletes, etc.
5. Donate pocket calendars and
desk calendars to local shelters
to help women organize their
lives.
6. Collect supplies and
assemble "Basic Bags" to take
to Domestic Violence Shelters.
This provides badly needed
hygiene items.
7. Donate gently-used books to
the shelter for children that are
residing there.
8. Provide "Move out of the
Shelter Kits" for your local
shelter. These could include
plates, cups, silverware, and
bathroom items for women that
are leaving the shelter to move
into a home.
9. Have a "Mardi Bra Party" any
month that you wish. Send
invitations to other women's
groups and ask them to donate
bras, panties, and personal
hygiene products for the local
shelter. Could also have a
domestic violence speaker.
10. Be mindful of programs
organized by other
organizations with similar
purpose. These are often a low
-cost educational opportunity for
club members to attend.
11. Purchase new journals;
cover the front with inspirational
sayings. Donate these to the
local shelter, giving residents an
opportunity to journal and
record feelings.
12. Work on projects that have
visibility to promote Domestic
Violence Awareness during
October. Do a news article that
explains what towns people will
see and why it is being done.
This could be table tents,
centerpieces, freebies, or
displays. Domestic Violence
Month is October.
GFWC/Iowa State President’s Scholarship __________________________________________________________________________
Need your help in promoting
my upcoming President's
Scholarship that will be awarded
in March! My $1,000
scholarship will be given to a
nurse or a nursing student that
has an Associate's Degree in
nursing and is now pursuing a
BSN (Bachelor's of Science in
Nursing Degree).
I would appreciate your help
in publicizing this scholarship to
the nursing community.
Scholarship packets will be
distributed in the near future.
Also be watching for
information on the Carolyn
Blaue Scholarships. Carolyn
was a past GFWC/Iowa
President who passed away last
September. She is still near
and dear to many of us. Details
are still being finalized.

State President's Report on
Basic Bags
Did you happen to see the
article in the June 13th News
and Notes featuring our Basic
Bags? Solon Women’s Club
clubwoman Chris Newell gets
most of the credit for working
with Hoover Elementary in Iowa
City.
Thanks to you, and to our clubs,
we have surpassed our goal of
1,000 bags. We are now at
over 1,400 bags and may as
well finish strong to reach 2,000
bags. Keep saving those motel
sized items! Please keep a
record of any bags you may
have done so we can include on
March reports.
Convention Thank You
A special thank you for those of
you that attended or contributed
to our April State Convention,
held in Marshalltown. This was
my first pool side convention.
Have to be honest and say it
exceeded my expectations! I
appreciated your adaptability
and willingness to participate in
activities. I wish that we could
recognize every club for the
great things that they do. I am
so proud of your creativity and
generosity. When you add all of
our numbers together, we are
incredible!
We have learned that there
will be a float (wagon) available
that can be reserved and
utilized for community
celebrations, fairs, etc. The
float is expected to be a replica
wagon promoting the suffrage
movement.
For information, please go to
the following website:

The group actively promoting
the celebration and related
activities is the 19th

Projects that Showcase Karen Martinek, Arts
MUSIC THERAPY FOR DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER
PATIENTS Studies show that music reaches those struggling with neurocognitive disorders. Consider donating a CD player and a variety of music CDs to your local Memory Care Facility. Since most patients are in the ‘Baby Boomer’ age group, select artists and music from past decades (40’s, 50’s, 60’s), soundtracks from popular musicals—classical, jazz, blues, country, big band, The Nut-
cracker and other holiday favorites. The possibilities are endless!! Bring music back into the lives of others. If you play an instrument or the keyboard . . set up live music time for the residents.
OCTOBER PURPLE POSIE PROJECT
I love projects that showcase multiple GFWC areas — Participate in October’s Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention by painting and decorating flower pots in purple. Plant the pots with purple mums, chrysanthemums or asters. Include a placard using GFWC logo and purple awareness ribbon with information about your club and the GFWC Signature Program.
Deliver these ‘Awareness Beauties’ all over town: City Hall, libraries, hospitals, law offices, Police Department, doctor’s offices, etc. A great ALL-IN-ONE Project: Arts, Signature Program, and Public Relations !!!
OCTOBER 25TH NATIONAL ART DAY
Art as a creative human expression encapsulates myriad things. Also known as International Artist’s Day, this day celebrates all forms of art — paintings, sculpture, photography, architecture, music, and more. Through this celebration we show our respect for the passion and creativity in all artists.

Project Plans Nan Cord, Conservation
As fall approaches and we
look forward to the 2019 GFWC/
Iowa District Conventions, I
hope that your Conservation
Community Service Program
project plans are progressing
well. Our 2018 reports showed
that 26 clubs reported 47
projects with 1,072 volunteer
hours. Please consider
increasing those numbers
during this year. There are so
many conservation-related
areas that are crying out for our
attention.
The most popular 2018
projects were planting and
maintaining community or
school gardens or business
district containers. These are
wonderful, but perhaps our
clubs could consider a little
more diversity. The GFWC
Club Manual includes a wide
variety of projects in the
Conservation Community
Service Program section. Here
are a few examples:
Plan a clean-up day in your
community for the fall and/or
spring.
Work with children to teach
environmental awareness:
water and electricity
conservation, reusing, recycling,
etc.
Donate environmental, earth
-friendly or wildlife-friendly
books to your local library and
schools.
Visit your local and county
parks.
Contact local authorities to
determine planned park
improvements and the need for
volunteers.
Does your community have
collection days for disposal of
unused medicines and needles
or hazardous waste? If so,
volunteer to help. If not, work
with local officials to facilitate
them.
Sponsor an Arbor Day or
Earth Day event and include a
poster contest to publicize the
event.
One of the Grand Initiatives of
the GFWC Administration is the
goal of planting 1,000 trees
GFWC-wide. Your club could
make arrangements to secure
free trees or purchase trees.
They could be planted by the
club, or the club could adopt a
class at a school and donate the
trees for them to plant, or your
club could join with a local
men’s organization to plant
them. There are so many
options.

destroys itself.

purifying the air and
giving fresh strength to our people.” –

GFWC Refresher Betty Wade, Membership
I
As we begin our new GFWC/Iowa club year, it is good to begin with a GFWC Federation Refresher. This is a positive program of continuing education on the benefits of belonging to GFWC. This program can help with the overall retention of members, as well as educating new members and creating excitement and pride in your club.
GFWC has many programs established to keep seasoned and new members engaged and connected. One of the most important topics that should be chosen is "UNITY IN DIVERSITY" and why it is as important today as when it was adopted at the first GFWC convention.
One way to educate our members is to review the GFWC Bylaws and Standing Rules. It is also a great time to remind your members about the information tools offered through GFWC, such as the GFWC Clubwoman Magazine; GFWC News and
Notes; the GFWC Blog; the Women's History and Resource Center; and, most importantly, the GFWC Club Manual. Also, you could share the GFWC Partners and information and projects related to each.
I hope you have a fun, informative year planned. Keep working on your recruitment for your club, and be sure to send new member information to Cindy at Headquarters in a timely fashion. This recruitment campaign, we have welcomed two new members to GFWC/Iowa. Good work!

Service Project Ideas Bonita Baughman, Home Life
Record participation was reported in Home Life last year with 32 clubs reporting. Thanks again to each club that participated. It is very important to report all the wonderful service projects in your community that your club does. We would like to hear about them and recognize all your hard work and volunteering with GFWC/Iowa. Writing reports will be easier if you make notes in your program book each month about the activity, etc.
Carolyn Forbes, GFWC Home Life Chairman, shared some ideas on Home Life projects:
1. Make arrangements with the activity director to have a game at your local assisted living facility. Supply door prizes to be given to the winners — $5.00 gift cards for
food or shopping, jigsaw puzzles, or a journal are examples.
2. Design and make cards to give to other volunteer and service organizations, thanking them for their kindness and volunteer spirit.
3. September 10th is Sewing Machine Day. Use this day for your club to use their sewing machines to make toys for children’s cancer wards at hospitals to be given on Martin Luther King Day, January 20, 2020. Click this website for some fun and easy suggestions: https:/seasoned homemaker. com/the cutest-free-stuffed- animal-patterns/
4. September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness. Each year approximately 15,000 U.S. children and adolescents under twenty
years old receive a cancer diagnosis. Leukemia, brain tumors, and lymphoma are the common types of cancers that affect this age group. A gold ribbon marks awareness of Childhood Cancer. During the month of September display gold ribbons around town to help spread awareness.
Our partner, Canine Companions for Independence, has many projects which your club could participate in. Check the Home Life club manual for the websites.
Have a great GFWC year!

Elevator Speech Sandy Phillips, Leadership
The elevator speech is no
longer than 30 seconds — the
time it takes to ride in an
elevator — and simply conveys
the benefits and uniqueness of
your club and/or GFWC. It
should catch your audience’s
attention quickly.
Wear your club pin and/or
club t-shirt to events and be
prepared to answer: What is
GFWC? What does your club
do? Be prepared to give
individuals your elevator speech
answering their questions.
Two weeks ago, while
attending meetings in
Washington, DC., a gentleman
all dressed up in a suit, seeing
my pins, walked across the
lobby and asked me what
organization I represented, what
activities we completed, and
with what other organizations
we were connected.
I answered his questions
with my elevator speech.
“GFWC — the General
Federation of Women’s Clubs
— is an international
organization made up of clubs
who work to improve their local
communities and global
communities. Clubs work
together on GFWC goals, such
as Domestic Violence
Awareness and Prevention,
supporting libraries and the arts,
and improving the environment.”
Be prepared with your
elevator speech as it spreads
information about GFWC and
your club and can be used to
increase membership.

Miranda’s Law seeks to make
an employer notification service
for school bus drivers across
the country mandatory. This
would require school bus
drivers to register and would
notify employers within 24
hours when the driver receives
a moving violation.
It’s one of GFWC’s Brand
Initiatives to get clubwomen to
make 1,000 contacts through
phone calls or emails to their
Congressional representatives
on September 23, 2019.
Miranda's Law will create
universal safety regulations to
help keep students safe when
they ride the school bus.
GFWC strongly supports the
passage of H.R. 1923 and
S. 2427, The Women's History
and Nineteenth Amendment
Centennial Quarter Dollar
Coin Program Act. These bills
will celebrate the centennial of
the Nineteenth Amendment
by honoring the contributions of
prominent women from each
state, the District of Columbia,
and U.S. territories. Similar to
the 50 States Quarter Program,
the Women’s History and
Nineteenth Amendment
Centennial Quarter Dollar Coin
Program Act would create a
new series of commemorative
circulating coins which highlight
women suffragists and
other trailblazers on the reverse
side of the U.S. quarter.
Help to combat campus
sexual assault today! Victims
of sexual assault require
specialized medical treatment
and counseling services.
Campus sexual assault
survivors suffer high rates of
PTSD, depression and drug or
alcohol abuse which can
hamper both the ability to
succeed in school and future
employment. Educational
equity for women and girls
requires fair, responsive, fully
developed campus sexual
assault policies, knowledgeable
administrators, and ultimately,
an end to sexual violence on
college campuses.
All GFWC clubs who have a
100% participation in the
Legislative Action Center will be
recognized at the 2020 state
convention. Please let me know
once you have reached this
goal.

Special Programs Meredith McHone-Pierce, Adventures in Reading
Did you read any good books this summer? I did!
I’m a compulsive reader, so I keep a book at hand most evenings – winter or summer. I mostly read and really love mysteries, but this summer I’ve purposely broadened my horizons.
I highly recommend the Irish Country Doctor series by Patrick Taylor. I’ve read most of the series and enjoyed each one. (I describe the series as sort of an All Creatures Great and Small, substituting a GP in an Irish village for a veterinarian in England.)
I also added several non-fiction books to my reading list. I particularly enjoyed and recommend these two:
Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly, about the women ‘computers’ who were vital to our U.S. space program. This
book was adapted for the recent movie of the same name, which I also recommend.
Dust Bowl Girls by Lydia Reeder, about a champion women’s basketball team during the 1930’s. Great story! December 1
