Volume 96 Issue 1 Fall Issue 2014

President’s Letter October 2014

Dear GFWC Members,

Fall greetings to all fellow GFWC Wyoming Clubwoman. I look forward to an exciting

year filled with volunteerism and your warm camaraderie. I know that each of you share my

enthusiasm for which I am grateful. We are most fortunate to have outstanding officers, board

members and program chairmen who are dedicated to GFWC-W and passionate about working

with our state clubs.

We held our first state board of directors meeting on September 5th

in Laramie. I am thrilled to

have representatives on the board from many of our clubs. Our meeting was well attended and

very productive as we move forward to achieve the goals of our state. We want to remind all

club members that each of you are critical to our state federation and our mission is to serve and

support you. Please call upon us for any of your needs.

One of my goals for 2014-2015 is to visit every club in our state, come to better know each of

your members, share ideas, and educate clubs re: GFWC-W. I have been delighted to attend and

present at WCLC and X-JWC. I will soon be traveling to the Wheatland Laramie Dell Club,

Yoder Woman’s Club, and Woman’s Club of Rock Springs. I hope to schedule attendance to a

meeting with all of the remaining clubs as well. Thank you for the opportunity to share

information and learn about the happenings across the state. I invite any member who would

2

like to join me in my travels to another club to do so. It is an honor to serve this wonderful

group of ladies!

We held our first two-day state educational forum and workshop on September 12th

and 13th

in

Laramie with 40 attendees! The Laramie Woman’s Club graciously hosted a luncheon the first

day in celebration of their 116th

birthday. It was a lovely event and very special to “connect”

with members from all around our state. Thank you Laramie Woman’s Club! Information was

shared regarding every aspect of GFWC and GFWC-W with regard to each officer, program

chairman, and club president’s responsibilities. Our leaders are certainly prepared for their jobs.

It was incredibly exciting to learn of the plans for the state from each of our program chairmen.

You will be receiving ideas, suggestions, and information from them on a regular basis. We

want to provide as many resources as possible for your clubs. State presidents and GFWC Club

Liaisons, please be sure to share the information you receive via the monthly News Blasts and

bi-annual Clubwoman Newsletters with your members. Information will also be available on the

gfwcwyoming.org website. Remember, we are here for YOU!

We will be holding a Stateside Leadership Training in Cheyenne on Saturday, November 15th

.

Our committee is working steadfastly to conduct an outstanding training that will benefit future

leaders in their GFWCW club work, as well as their other community service and personal lives.

Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. Encourage other members in your clubs to attend.

We need future leaders as do all organizations throughout the country. One thing I know for

certain is that our clubs consist of outstanding ladies with innumerable talents. We need each of

you to step forward and lead! Details will be forthcoming so be on the look out!

You will be receiving detailed information from the State Leadership Chairmen re: the

Leadership and Development Seminar in June, 2015 at the GFWC Preconvention in Memphis,

Tennessee. This is another opportunity to develop leadership skills. You will also receive

information from the Jennie Award Co-Chairmen regarding candidates for the Jennie Award.

This is the only national honor that recognizes individual members for personal excellence.

Please check out the gfwc.org website for details. Think of candidates from YOUR club for

these opportunities and honors. The deadline for the LEADS application is February 15th,

2015.

The deadline for the Jennie Award Nomination is June 1st, 2014.

Remember to subscribe to the GFWC Clubwoman Magazine. It is filled with ideas for our local

clubs. Information and subscription forms are available on the gfwc.org website. Also be sure

to sign up for News and Notes, an e-mail publication sent directly to your e-mail keeping you

informed regarding all national news, project ideas, partnerships, etc. It is simple! Go to

[email protected] and place a request.

You will be hearing from our Membership Chairwoman, Wendy Owen regarding membership

recruitment ideas. Our membership committee will be working to develop new clubs in our

state. We would love to have the participation of every club in these two endeavors. Recruiting

and retaining great members is critical to the future of our organization. Please accept the

3

challenge of adding new members to your club, then continuing to be outstanding mentors.

Retention is equally important.

Be on the “look out” for the Wyoming Clubwoman Newsletter coming out this month. It will

contain the State Directory, Calendar of Events, Rating Guide, pertinent forms, and exciting

articles from around our state. It will be sent to each club president and club executive officers

for sharing as well on the gfwcwyoming.org website.

I was proud to serve as Wyoming’s representative and attend the Western State Region

Conference. I was asked to share Wyoming’s theme and goals, which I was pleased to do. Our

keynote speaker was our International President, Babs Condon. She shared exciting information

regarding recent meetings she had with Vice-President Joe Biden and other influential leaders.

They were celebrating the 20th

Anniversary of the passage of the Violence Against Women Act.

As you know, this Act creates funding for prevention and supports comprehensive services to the

survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. These are matters

we often sadly hear of in the news. I am most excited that one of the main purposes of this

meeting was to make future plans regarding how GFWC can continue to have a positive impact

on these matters.

GFWC is also planning its 125th

Anniversary Celebration at the June, 2014 Convention.

Anniversary pins are currently available at the GFWC Marketplace for $12.50 each for interested

members. I will share more information regarding this event in the future. Our Wyoming

committee is at work planning ways to celebrate Wyoming’s history in our state clubs. I would

be thrilled to have any of our state club members contact me to join this committee. A letter has

also been sent to Governor Matt Mead, requesting that he proclaim April 24th

as GFWC

Federation day across the state.

Our annual convention with be held in Casper, Wyoming on April 24th

and 24th

. Mark your

calendars now. Plans are underway. Our keynote speaker will be GFWC President-Elect, Sheila

E. Shay. It will be a fun and exciting week-end. You have my word on it!

An outstanding year awaits us all. I leave you with this quote by John Wesley. “Do all the good

you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the

times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.”

Thank you!

Arts Chairman—Lorrie Jacobsen

October Time to get permission from your school system for elementary Earth Day-April 22

art contest: “What can I do to help our Earth?” (**include Youth contest rules) Art teachers

will probably want to tie this in with March being-Art Month. Be sure to designate age level

and # of entries. Ex: 5 entries from 5th

& 5 entries from 6th

grade students. Of course, this

all depends on how many art teachers want to participate…they have busy schedules too.

Education Chairman—Pat Stenback

Ladies I am so sorry I was unable to meeting you at the September meetings. However I am

looking forward to meeting you at a later date.

I hope that you have started reading to a child. If not, then please start. Help put a smile on a

struggling reader’s face. Remember to write down your hours and give to your president.

“GFWC has declared the fourth week in October as GFWC Advocates for Children Week.” This

year it takes place from Oct. 19 to Oct. 25. The July-August Clubwoman has great ideas for

each day.

One idea is the United Nations Foundations Shot Life Campaign. This is the program that I’ve

asked you to collect money each month for and then we will send the state treasurer all our

collections to submit a check to Shot Life in May. I am sure you have read that diseases are

coming back because people are not getting their children inoculated. It is important that we

educate people the importance of ridding these diseases for good.

Any questions, you can e-mail me at [email protected]

Home Life Collaborative and Partnership Chairman—Phyllis Salzburg

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Wear pink to your club meetings, club activities or

just because you want to show your support, promote awareness and help with the fight against

breast cancer!

Yoplait has been providing monetary support for many years to organizations fighting breast

cancer. When you purchase Yoplait yogurt with a pink lid there is a code underneath the lid. Go

to www.Yoplait.com/friendsinthefight and enter the code. $.10 will go to one of 3 breast cancer

charities. Yoplait will donate $350,000 between the charities. The campaign will continue

through 3/31/15.

FLASH!!! Winter is coming!! Clean out those coat closets and get your unused warm clothing to

your local shelters!

International Outreach Chairman—Trish Peoples

“Wyobelle” or “Bessie Bingo”

Did you know if women farmers had access to the same resources as men, more than 150 million

additional people would have enough food to eat? Heifer International aims to make that a

reality. Gifts to Heifer International provide support for women's groups, training in gender

equality and the means to send girls to school. They are empowering women around the world to

reach their full potential.

GFWC-W's Heifer International mascot had a blast at the Cheyenne X-JWC fundraiser at

Grandma's Pickle Parlor on September 27th. She won two bingo games in a row! Her winnings

and the donations from the other bingo participants added $105 to the Heifer International

coffers. More importantly, everyone in attendance learned a little more about this fabulous

charity. The mascot and I send a huge thanks to the women of X-JWC for their hospitality!

I had mentioned that our mascot would be named in the October News Blast. However, there is a

tie between the names "Wyobelle" and "Bessie Bingo." Runoff voting between these two names

will continue through October at a cost of $1 per vote. The mascot's next trip will be to the

Laramie Women's Club on October 10th

Public Issues Community Service Program Co-Chairman Teresa Kunkel and Earleen Weaver

The Public Issues program is designed to actively connect members with effective projects and

activities relating to social responsibilities. The program focuses on the following areas

1. Citizenship

2. Military Personnel

3. Emergency and Disaster Preparedness

4. Safety and Crime Prevention

For the 2014/2015 year our main focus will be Emergency and Disaster Preparedness and

Military Personnel.

Last month all club presidents should have received the Emergency Preparedness, Winter

Weather, CERT and Code Red brochures as well as an Emergency Preparedness contact list for

each county in the state.

Remember October is Fire Awareness month – every day Americans experience the horror of

fire but most people don’t understand fire.

Fire is FAST! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control. It takes

only minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames. Most fires

occur in the home when people are asleep. If you awake to a fire, you won’t have time to grab

valuables because fire and smoke spread quickly, there is only time to escape.

Fire is HOT! Heat is more threatening than flames. The heat in a fire alone can kill. Room

temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level.

Inhaling this extremely hot air will scorch your lungs, and can melt your clothes to your skin. In

five minutes a room can get so hot that everything in it ignites at once.

Fire is DARK! Fire starts bright, but quickly produces thick black smoke and total darkness. If

you awake to a fire you may be blinded and unable to find your way around the home you have

lived in for years.

Fire is DEADLY! Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do. Fire uses up the

oxygen you need and produces smoke and poisonous gases that kill. Breathing even small

amounts of smoke and toxic gases can make you drowsy, and short of breath, that can disorient

you and lull you into a deep sleep before the flames reach your door. You may not wake up in

time to escape!

37

Only when we know the true nature of fire can we prepare ourselves and our families. Before a

fire occurs create and practice a fire escape plan. Make sure Smoke Alarms are properly installed

and working correctly. Install fire alarms on each level of the home and test batteries monthly.

Contact your local fire department to inspect your home for fire safety and to obtain more

information on fire safety tips.

Communications and Identity Chairman—Heather Dodson

When Ann Norwood asked me to be the States GFWCs Communications and Identity

Chairwoman, she charged me with helping the clubs in Wyoming to access and establish an

internet based identity, and to help each club learn how to utilize e-mails, Facebook, Pinterest,

and other electronic forms of communication.

Every club in Wyoming is a dynamic, powerful force in your community. You all work to affect

change every day. While recognition is not something you expect for the work you do, it serves

an important purpose: getting the word out. You’re not looking for a thank-you; you’re looking

for partners to help make your community a better place. A strong internet based identity also

helps like-minded women find our great club to join.

My goal in the next 2 years is to help each club find ideas, resources, tools, and tips necessary for

achieving successful public relations and professional communications to promote GFWC clubs,

districts,

States, Regions, and the national organization. In particular, I plan to visit each club to help

establish and train club women to utilize social media. Publicizing your club’s projects and

initiatives lets your community know you exist and that you’re doing important things. It attracts

new members and opens doors to worthwhile partnerships. It also assists GFWC with promoting

the Federation on a national level.

Social Media

Traditional media is like a one-way street—you can always read a newspaper or listen to a

television report, but you have limited opportunities to share your thoughts on a subject. Social

media is a two-way street—you have the ability to engage in an interactive dialogue. It is a social

instrument of communication that gives people the power to share, making the world more open

and connected. Your voice is heard. Social media includes the various online technology tools

that enable people to easily communicate and share information and resources. It can include

text, audio, video, images, podcasts, and other multimedia communications.

While there are many social media sites—Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and others—Facebook is the

social media site that currently resonates best with GFWC members.

So, what is Facebook?

38

Facebook is the perfect multigenerational platform for your club members to interact with one

another and with the community. Facebook can be used to post updates and photos of your

activities, create events for your meetings, and connect to groups you work with—national and

local partner organizations, news stations, civic organizations, or other groups with Facebook

pages.

My first task for each club member is to view the national’s GFWC’s Facebook page at

www.Facebook.com/GFWCMembers. Come-on Ladies, we do amazing things, crafts we never

thought we could, bake items that belong on any cooking network, and we use tools that we

never thought we could and enact real change. We can move into the digital age as well. I am

here to help you.

Please feel free to contact me with questions,

Heather Dodson / GFWC Communications and Identity Chairwoman

Fundraising Co-Chairmen—Flo Beville and Tandie Opsal

GREETINGS LADIES! We hope the cabinet tickets sales are going well. It’s

amazing to think that we have the potential to raise $5,000 for our State

Organization.

I know many of our clubs are always thinking outside the box on fundraising. Many

already have excellent fundraising ideas. In researching more ideas, I’ve come up

with a few for you to consider. I will try to annotate 2-3 each month in our

Newsblast.

39

Host a street carnival – get the kids involved!

Get a bouncing castle onto the street complete rented with music or band. Allow

people to play games for small amounts of money and charge an entry fee. This is a

great joint event idea where many charities in your community can come together to

all have different booths and raise money.

Organize a competition

Have a competition say eating, dressing or fashion. Members of public will pay to

participate in voting or tasting foods or sampling fashion as they donate to the cause.

Just be aware of local laws regarding competitions before you start, so you can make

sure that your competition is legal!

Organize a karaoke competition.

There are many out there who dream of being the next Idol winner. So, get talented

(and not-so-talented) people to participate in a karaoke show. Each participant/team

must have a supporting audience, made up of paying attendees. Members of the public

will also donate to participate in watching the event.

Good luck with your ticket sales. Thank you for your efforts!!

Leadership Chairman—Beverly Campbell

It is a new year for most GFWC clubs. We may have new members, new officers, and new

chairmen. Often we agree to take an active part, but don’t really know what the expectations and

responsibilities will be. However, we all want to be successful in what we have agreed to do.

The tidbits provided each month will apply to all members and hopefully will begin the

education and promotion of improved leadership throughout our state clubs.

Be enthusiastic and excited about what you have agreed to do. A positive attitude works

wonders and results in members wanting to work with you.

BE COMMITTED TO WHAT YOU AGREE TO DO. DON’T PROCASTINATE. When

you agree to a leader position and don’t meet the responsibility involved, it doesn’t just affect

you; it affects the club in a negative way. In addition you won’t get the help and cooperation

you need to be successful.

40

Legislation and Public Policy Chairman—Kathleen Petersen

Report from Kathleen Petersen, State Chair, Legislatives Issues Program

November 4th, the General Election in Wyoming is less than 30 days away! I mailed out the

following letter to all the Club Presidents on October 1st along with several brochures about

voting to be distributed to Club members at their monthly meetings:

Dear President ______________,

Last month I introduced myself through the GFWC -W newsletter, but please allow me to

reintroduce myself as your State Program Chair for Legislative Issues. In my report for

September, I asked that the local clubs emphasis the importance of Voting. I thought it might be

helpful to give the clubs more information on how to go about voting. I am happy to send to you

and your club some brochures distributed by the Secretary of State's Office, the "2014 Wyoming

Voter's Guide".

In the guide, you will find amongst other things: Voter registration requirements, how to register

to vote, how to find polling places in your area, how to vote absentee and a list of the County

Clerks' Offices across the state.

One thing I wanted to expound on is absentee voting or early voting. Early voting has already

begun and many people avail themselves to this option. You don't need a reason to vote early or

by absentee ballot. Some people find this more convenient and they don't have to worry if

something happens that makes it not possible to vote on the actual date of November 4th (such as

snow storms or illness). Also, people with mobility issues or access to transportation like the

absentee voting process as they can request a ballot and have it mailed to them. They can take

time filling out the ballot then return it in the mail. They just need to be sure their ballot is

received in the County Clerks' Office no later than 7:00 PM on Election Day. There is also

voting assistance available, you just need to request assistance from your County Clerk's Office.

Please share the enclosed brochures with your local legislative chairperson or club members. If

you have any questions or need more brochures, please let me know.

Thank you for helping spread the word about our most important right and privilege to vote!

Chair GFWC-W Legislative Program

Past and a Promising Future With Friends.

Please consider having a recruiting event ASAP. The possibilities for events

are as diverse as our organization. Always include Federal Facts, food, and

fun. Clubs achieving and reporting three new members as a result of their seasonal

recruiting efforts will be recognized in GFWC International Clubwoman Magazine.

It is now Fall and time to" Rake in New Friends"

Domestic Violence Chairman—Patti Reese

October is Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) is a national leader in the fight to end

domestic violence by raising awareness about this social issue. By supporting existing activities,

42

working with various established programs, and initiating educational opportunities for club

members and local citizens, the goal of the GFWC Signature Project: Domestic Violence

Awareness and Prevention is to increase awareness of the widespread occurrence of domestic

abuse.

What can you and your club do?

Purple is the designated color for domestic violence awareness and prevention. Wear purple or

wear a purple ribbon during the month of October. Have the club cut ribbons and put together

with pins to pass at your meetings or at churches. Let people know that you are speaking out

against domestic violence.

Contact your local domestic violence shelter and ask what you can do to help them. If

you do not know who to call in your county, email Patti Reese and she will provide you

with the name and phone number of the contact person in your area.

Step Away from Abuse – GFWC Sock Project

Help domestic violence survivors “Step Away From Abuse” by working with domestic

violence shelters in your local community by participating in the GFWC Sock Project.

Place a pair of new socks in a quart size, clear plastic baggie. Affix a personalized label

with a message of support and encouragement from you club that reads: “As you begin

your new life and Step Away from Abuse, we hope you will find comfort and warmth as

you walk into your newly found freedom”.

You can find the label template at this web site:

http://www.gfwc.org/gfwc/Domestic_Violence_Awareness_Program.asp

In October of each year, Domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy programs in

Wyoming take turns supporting an annual Silent Witness Ceremony. These events are

held to raise awareness and educate residents about domestic violence and the affect it

has on the immediate family and community. This year’s event was held in Laramie on

October 4, 2014. Two members of GFWC Wyoming attended. Watch for the event next

year and invite as many club members to attend as possible. Contact the event

coordinators and offer to help at the event.

Community Improvement Project Chairman—Karen Kent

By now all of our GFWC Wyoming clubs should have had at least one membership meeting. It

is my hope that each club has come up with their own special CIP project. This project should

address an issue or a particular need that is unique to each of your individual communities. This

project can involve other nonprofit organizations, various community businesses and other

entities, as well as professional organizations. This project can continue for as long as there is a

need in your community, however you will be reporting on this project in March 2016. That

may seem like a long time to be participating in this kind of a project but I can guarantee that

once you start this project time will fly.

The most important thing that your club needs to do is to just get started.

If you're having difficulties trying to come up with a project please let me know and I would be

more than happy to give you some suggestions ideas and/or guidelines.

Good luck with your projects. I know that your communities are a better place to live because of

the giving spirit the ladies of GFWC Wyoming exhibit.

Please send your articles by the 10th

of every month to [email protected]. I will make

every effort to send you a reminder but please put a note on your calendar to send your

information prior to the deadline. Pictures are wonderful along with your news. Calendar event

happenings in the current month can be included but also send any upcoming calendar events to

Wendy Owen, [email protected]. I am planning on having the News Blasts and Wyoming

Clubwomen out to you by the 15th

of the month barring computer problems!

I am receiving news items in many formats i.e. phones, tablets, e-mail, PDF’s and scanned items.

Some of them copy beautifully into the news blast/Clubwomen and others-not so much. I’ll try

and fix what I can but some things cannot be modified by me so please double check your note

to me before you send it and make sure it is complete. The hardest things to change are scanned

files so triple check those prior to sending.

I was impressed with the amount of notes, etc. I received for this month’s Clubwoman. There is

a lot of information in here so please PASS THIS ON TO YOUR CLUB MEMBERS! Don’t

forget this document is also posted on the state website so direct your members to check it out

there.

Next month will the usual News Blast edition. The Spring Edition of the Clubwomen will

include the Call to Convention information.

packet was $20 with extra cards available for purchase. Drinks and snacks were also

available for purchase. The Bingo money was divided between the winners and X-

JWC. Also, there were door prizes. The X-JWC raised $578, portions of which will

be donated to Comea Shelter, Friday Food Bag and LCCC scholarships. It was a fun

successful fundraising event.

Woman’s Club of Rock Springs—Betty Lou Auld

Although the Woman’s Club of Rock Springs GFWCW does not meet regularly during the

summer, members have been busy. Marianne Gatti and Leslie Jo Gatti attended the 124th

GFWC

Convention in Chandler, AZ. They toured Sedona, AZ and participated in a service project with

Arizona Empty Bowls Pet Pantry.

In July the Club hosted a table at Rock Springs International Day, a celebration of the City’s

founding as the “Home of 56 Nationalities.” Members talked to prospective members, handed

out free bottles of hand sanitizer and asked passersby to participate in a 50/50 raffle. The Club

also sold small items donated by members.

The Club began their meetings for the 2014-2015 club year with the Garden Section gathering on

September 2. Chairman Gail Aldred handed out flyers on growing and caring for roses in the

46

local area. Members discussed their various successes and trials with gardening at 6500 feet.

Winter care of the Baby Mound was discussed.

The following Tuesday, the Literature Section met chaired by Jeanne Weidner. Everyone

reported on their summer reading. There was a discussion about reading a single book. It was

decided the group would read the same book before the Christmas party. Everyone present was

given a copy of the current New York Times Bestseller List. The book would be decided at the

October meeting.

The first General meeting is traditionally a potluck hosted by the Club’s Board. The food was

delicious and plentiful with a good mix of soup, salads, main dishes and desserts. Yearbooks and

membership cards were distributed by Club President Betty Lou Auld.

The fourth Tuesday was the season’s first Busy Hands Section meeting. Chairman Charlette

Stewart showed some of the throws she has been working on for distribution to the VA

Hospitals. Many members have been busy during the summer. Some members are crocheting

mint green & white scarves for the Wyoming Special Olympics in January. Most of the members

are working on craft items for Holiday House in December. The raffle prizes were discussed. So

far, the Club has three items for the major raffle and a baby blanket for the smaller Operation

Smile raffle.

On Friday, September 5th

, Club President Betty Lou Auld, West Wyoming District President

Betty Jean Carter, and Wyoming President Elect Leslie Jo Gatti attended the GFWCWyoming

Board meeting in Laramie. The drive from Rock Springs to Laramie was beautiful with leaves

just starting to turn. The drive home was so rainy that Leslie’s car was super clean when the trio

arrived back in Rock Springs.

On September 11, six members of the Club met to clean Exit 107 on I-80. The Highway

Department has put up a sign listing the Woman’s Club of Rock Springs, GFWCW, as being

responsible for cleaning that area. The Club is required to clean, at least, twice a year. There was

a bit of excitement when Alice Jakeway found a damaged fire extinguisher in the weeds. The

police were called. A County fire official disposed of the extinguisher.

The following weekend, the three Sate Board members were joined by member Marianne Gatti

in Laramie for the Fall Workshop in Laramie. Friday’s dinner was enjoyed by all. On the way to

Saturday’s meeting, Betty Jean’s car rebelled and quit on Grand. It was towed to the GM

dealership where she was given a Silverado pickup to replace her Cadillac! She has already

ordered a new car.

Our prayers are with former Club President Christ Confer and her family as she recovers from

heart surgery in Salt Lake City. Many thanks to Shirley Blackwell for keeping the membership

informed about Chris’ progress.
