Marti’s Message

Dear Club Members & Friends:

Ringing out the Old Year and ringing in the New Year was

a joyous occasion. My holidays were filled with fun, family, and

friends, I wish for you health and happy times in 2013!

Thanks so much to Fay Swalley for such a great holiday

party. Decorations and favors were so festive, especially the can-

dy cane tree and silver ornaments. Club members and friends in

attendance numbered thirty-eight and Brook's was a perfect set-

ting for sharing holiday cheer and good times. Beverly Pester en-

tertained us to our delight with music and song.

Our fifty-seven members were officially registered with

GFWC, and only a few donations remain to be sent.

Our poster contest winners were recognized at their

schools and awarded their Kindle Fires on December 19. Teach-

ers were delighted with the $150 we gave for their classroom.

Quiet Waters Park Elementary took both 1st place awards and

seven honorable mentions. Deerfield Park Elementary had four

honorable mention awards. Looking ahead, perhaps we can spon-

sor another poster contest in fall of 2013.

I am looking forward to our club's contin-

ued support of so many charities, community

issues, and promoting education of our youth in

2013.

Rita Masi reported that because our club

added $21.00 each, every Hacienda Ranch girl

received an even $50 holiday gift card from

Target. Thank you so much for your generosity. You’re the

BEST! Marti

Stovetop or Microwave?

A microwave is a lot more ef-

ficient way to reheat than a stov-

etop, partly because a stovetop

wastes a fair amount of heat.

According to the EPA, the microwave

uses 80 percent less energy when heating up relatively

small amounts. Although the microwave needs a lot of

electricity, it’s a relatively short burst of power. As the

immortal Yogi Berra might put it, “A watched pot

never boils, but it boils quicker in a microwave.”

Chaplain - Thomasina O'Shea

A cup full of patience,

A portion of dreams,

A teaspoon of planning,

A few idle schemes,

A wee bit of thinking,

Some books of your own,

A serving of lectures,

A place to call home…

Some health is important,

A mixture of charms,

A spoon of persistence,

A heart soft and warm,

A faith in tomorrow,

A smile for today,

Believing and trusting

Each step of the way…

Some keen understanding,

A blue sky above,

A vision unequalled,

A heart full of love,

A serving of knowledge,

A questioning mind…

‘Tis these that make up living,

All nicely combined. By Garnett Ann Schultz

These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter . . . I go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what I'm hereafter. I finally got my head together, and now my body is falling apart. Thought for the day: Be who you are and say what you feel because those that matter don't mind and those that mind don’t matter. Auld Lang Syne

Auld Lang Syne was partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700's, it was first published in 1796 after

Burns' death. Early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspired Burns to produce the mod-

ern rendition. An old Scotch tune, 'Auld Lang Syne' literally means 'old long ago,' or simply, 'the good old

days.'
