Widening Access • We are second in Scotland for young entrants from the 20% most deprived backgrounds at 17% − the Scottish sector average is 10.4%. • We raise educational aspirations of more than 14,600 children and 3,500 parents through the Caledonian Club in Glasgow and London. • Sixth-year pupils studying through our Advanced Higher Hub received an outstanding pass rate of 91% in 2016. It is the first project in Scotland to employ school teachers on a university campus. • Around 850 students make the transition from Scottish colleges onto GCU programmes each year, many supported through our College Connect programme. Learning and Teaching 96% of our graduates are in GCU Key Facts employment or further study after six months. • Over 97% of our students come from a state school or college, above the Scottish average of 87%. • We were successful in our bid to deliver the first Graduate Level Apprenticeship in Scotland. • We are Scotland’s only provider of Vision Sciences, including Optometry, Orthoptics and Opthalmic Dispensing. Our postgraduate optometry students deliver eye care for homeless people and asylum seekers, in the only eye health project of its kind in Scotland. • The GCU Law Clinic provides free and confidential advice and assistance to those who do not qualify for Legal Aid and cannot afford to pay legal fees. The Clinic is led by a management committee, made up entirely of GCU Law students.

• Direct carbon emissions cut by 34% from 2008-2015.

• Rated ‘first class’ for environmental and ethical performance (2015 People & Planet University League).

Equality and Diversity• We are sector leading in terms of

our gender pay gap, with no gender pay gap in academic roles when data accounts for age and length of service.

• In 2012, we became a Living Wage Employer, and building on this base, GCU was confirmed as Scotland’s first accredited Living Wage University employer in June 2014.

• GCU’s academic promotion record saw female professors making up 36% in 2016. This compares to the sector average of 23%.

Award-winning University• Athena Swan Bronze Award in

recognition of our commitment to promoting gender equality.

• The Advanced Higher Hub received the outstanding achievement of the year, winning the SQA Pride o’Worth Award for Centres and the Partnership of the Year Award at the SQA Star Awards. The Scottish Qualification Authority-run awards celebrate learning and teaching excellence across Scotland.

• Our simulated health learning environment gained the Enhancing Student Learning Award at the Herald’s 2016 Higher Education Awards. Students of the Learning Disabilities Nursing Studies programme gain real-life insight into coping with a patient with deteriorating mental health.
