This year an interactive Lego™ exhibition, The Great North Build –which brought town planning to life for 10,000 visitors of all ages –launched our third societal challenge theme: Social Renewal.

The University is a major investor in the region and a foundingpartner of Newcastle Science City. To support this, the Universityis hosting the British Science Festival in September 2013.

The Science Central development will breathe new life intoNewcastle city centre, attracting investors keen to co-locatewith our researchers.

Our INSIGHTS Public Lectures series is one of the largest andmost distinguished in the UK. These and our LIVE LunchtimeConcerts are free and open to all, attracting over 18,000 peopleonto campus each year.

Newcastle’s international profile continues to grow withover 220 trainee doctors studying at our Medical Campus inMalaysia and almost 500 students at our campus in Singapore.

A partnership with Loyola University in the US secured the firstdedicated Study Abroad Centre in the UK while our academiclinks with Xiamen University, China will see a new ConfuciusInstitute opening in Newcastle in 2013.

Our partnership with INTO reached a milestone with the opening ofour new city-centre building – home to 800 international students.

Research ExcellenceNewcastle University is a member of the Russell Group, the associationof 24 leading research-intensive UK universities. We have one of thelargest European Union research portfolios in the UK and have researchlinks with many other countries. We have a proven track record of meetingthe most pressing societal challenges through socially relevant research.

‘World leading’ or ‘internationally recognised’ research was identifiedin all of our submitted subject areas by the Research AssessmentExercise (RAE) 2008, and we are ranked 17th in the UK for researchpower (according to the influential publication, Research Fortnight).

The next official UK-wide research assessment is due to be publishedin December 2014 and preparation is well under way.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council(EPSRC) has positioned Newcastle among its top12 moststrongly funded universities in the UK. An Impact AccelerationAccount grant designed to bridge the gap between researchideas and commercial success has secured £1.4m.

Use of the cutting-edge Biomarker Generator, the first in Europeand second in the world, will make a significant difference to thediagnosis and treatment of cancer and other serious diseases.

Our focus on Sustainability has seen us make major stridesinto reducing reliance on rare earth metals with the developmentof a novel motor for electric vehicles using steel.

The geothermal borehole located on Science Central couldhold the key to a sustainable way to heat the site, hitting waterclose to 80oC.

And tackling the impacts of climate change, our scientistsare more accurately measuring sea-level rises and mappingflooding hot-spots of the future.

The University is investing in academic and social spaces,including the refurbished Students’ Union and the newStudent Forum, to create a vibrant and welcoming campus.We have also pledged to give every student the opportunityof a work placement, internship or voluntary project.

We have a generous package of bursaries, scholarshipsand fee discounts, including our Promise Scholarshipsoffering £9,000 a year to up to 20 UK students and ourwidening participation efforts are nationally recognised.
