Tradition doesn’t have to dictate who pays for the wedding. It’s common that both sets of parents open their wallets. But how do you and your fiance ask your parents for money?
A marriage means that two families are joining together. A lack of communication between families can result in resentment, says Janet Eggiman, a therapist at Marriage and Family Counseling Center. So its best if both sets of families sit down together to discuss the wedding finances. To accomplish this undertaking, you may need to ask family members to put their pride and feelings aside for the strength of your new marriage.
The experts agree that before approaching anyone for money, you have to know what you want and how much it will cost. You have time to figure out what you want, says Katherine Kile, a wedding planner at Halls Takes the Cake. Research all of your options. You may be suprised at the selection in the local market, and at how little or much something costs.
Eggiman agrees, saying that “There are so many creative ways to get what you want.” You don’t need to solicit a fortune. Focus on the pieces of the wedding that are important to you.
You and your fiance need to be equally involved in the planning, you cannot go at it alone, says Eggiman. It’s essential that your parents see you two as a united front.
Even the best planners occasionally have to go back to the drawing board. How do you re-approach someone for more money? Eggiman says that being direct is the best way. Admit that you mis-calculated and be specific about what you need. It’s common for parents to come forward and offer a little extra when they see what is available for more money, says Kile.
Always give thanks to the people that financially supported your big day. Some non-monetary ways to show appreciation are giving daily respect, including a thank you statement on the invitations, and passing if forward. For example, plan to throw your parents an awesome 50th anniversary party, suggests Eggiman.
