Attachment and
Professor Des Hewitt’s
session on wellbeing and
mindfulness went down a
storm.
Amongst the stands and
displays there was
representation from the
Hero Project and their

about Introduction to
Think Tools and British
Values course on page 4)
and Creative Learning
Services had a busy stand
with an array of books
and texts for pupils and

Primary & Special
We have 15 Primary trainees
this year and they have all
been working hard in their
placements for the first term
with School Direct. It is very
inspiring to see them progress
into the teachers they will
become. They are now into
their second placement
(already) with drive and
enthusiasm in abundance.
Thanks go to all of the schools
involved in supporting our
trainees this term and
particularly to the mentors
who have given their time and
expertise.
For 2019/20 we have 5 offers
accepted although Primary
applications are much slower
than last year.
Secondary We have 12 trainees in total
this year all making progress,
thanks to the support of the
colleagues working with them
and constantly challenging
them to ensure that they are
continuing to improve their
performance. Thank you
Recruitment for 19/20 is very
strong this year, we have
already had 9 offers accepted
with further interviews
planned and applications are
still coming in.

Previously known as the primary computing network. This year the group has expanded to tackle issues which are of concern to both primary and secondary schools and members range from EYFS – KS5. Through sharing ideas to enhance and enrich the curriculum, a collaborative approach to assessment and access to E-Safety CPD group members have to opportunities to: create a meaningful dialogue between KS2/3
colleagues to support pupil transition, develop a FWTSA wide portfolio of exemplification evidence and access additional CEOP resources. The next meeting will take place on 29 January followed by further sessions on 28 March and 12 June all 2.00 to 4.00pm at Forest Way School.

Proposed Leicestershire and Rutland English Hub
The planned hub, led by a range
of partners including TSAs and
the LA, will be a centre of
excellence, accessible by all
teachers and professionals. It
will have universal reach to all
schools and colleges in
Leicestershire and Rutland. Its main purpose is to raise
standards across the two
counties. It will be built on the legacy of
the SSIF1 writing and SSIF2
reading projects. The launch
of the Hub will also focus on
an Early Years Oracy project
and a secondary project.
The strands of EAL,

An Introduction to
Word Aware
This was a new course led
by Kate Goodhew SALT,
which presented a
structured whole school approach to promote the
vocabulary development of
all children. Focussed on
whole class learning, the
approach is of particular
value for those who start at
a disadvantage - including
children with Special
Educational Needs and
those who speak English as
an additional language.
Once again evaluations
proved the course was a
hit.

CPD - Coming Up…..
Cover Supervisor
Training
Starts Friday 25 January 2019.
Although numbers are low for
this course we have decided
to go ahead as it has always been greatly valued by
attendees in the past.
It’s not too late to sign up,
even if the start date has
passed we can arrange for a
‘catch up’ session. Please
contact FWTSA office if you
are interested.
CPD - Well Received…..
Phonics Training and
ELSA Training
The first session of our
Phonics Training run by
Emma Mitchell on 17th
January was bursting at the seams proving this to still be a
very well regarded course.
It is two years since we ran
our first ELSA course and this
next course which starts on
28th February is proving to be
just as popular, in fact it is
nearly full so don’t delay if this
is one you have been
considering.
Maths Greater Depth - How
to engage and challenge the
‘Rapid Graspers’
This course, run by Ali Woolerson was held over 3
sessions ending at the beginning
of the Spring Term. The course
aim was how to apply principles
of mastery in the classroom,
particularly to provide challenge
for those who are most able. The course was a big success and
we had some very
complimentary evaluations
including this one below.
“This has completely changed
the way I teach maths, from
where the children sit to
planning the lesson and
ensuring challenge for all…
positive results in the
classroom from Day One.”
ELSA Training
“This was full of great
ideas and focussed on
purpose for improving
vocabulary and word
awareness. There wasn’t
anything I wolud say could
be done better! It was
fantastic - thanks.”
