Nature Connections Exhibition Runs to Sunday 11 October 2015 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 1pm-5pm)

This exhibition is curated from resident and associated artists from the College of Arts at the University of Derby, who have work linked to the themes of nature, landscape and the natural properties of the environment. Research in the College of Arts is linked to the natural landscape, health and wellbeing and environmental projects, which include our Heritage Lottery Funded partnership project DerwentWise.

Conference: Compassion Focused TherapyMonday 5 October to Wednesday 7 October 2015, 9am-5pm

This workshop introduces the basic ideas and interventions used in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). Participants will learn the evolutionary model, the nature of our three basic emotions regulation systems and how to apply to case formulation.

There will also be a focus on the forms and functions of shame and self-criticism, and how they can be treated by developing self and other directed compassion. CFT aims to develop care and affiliative-focused motivation, attention, emotion, behaviour and thinking.

Exhibition of postgraduate research from Jayne Falconer.

Jayne’s practice focuses ideas of gendered approaches to material and process by melding objects (shoes) in clay. This investigates the language of sensuality, which is fundamental to the exploration of touch and texture.

How to Clone a Mammoth Tuesday 13 October 2015, 6.30pm

In celebration of National Biology Week, Graham Rowe, Programme Leader for Biology at Derby, will talk about ‘de-extinction’ and the prospect of seeing living mammoths in the future. Even if genetic technologies have advanced sufficiently to resurrect mammoths, would we want to? No specialist knowledge is necessary and anyone with an interest in Biology – or mammoths – is welcome to attend.

International Print Exchange 2015Friday 9 October to Friday 6 November 2015 (Mon-Fri 10am-3pm, Sat 11am-4pm, closed Sun)

Now in its seventh year, the IPE is back and expected to feature over 100 mini-prints by printmakers from all over the world.

The IPE is an un-juried exhibition that features all work received. It has no assigned theme and is open to all printmakers.

The exchange is organised by Green Door Printmaking Studio, an environmentally sound open-access artist studio based at Banks Mill, Derby.

Big Data Challenges in Simulation-based Science Wednesday 14 October 2015, 5.30pm

Join us for the Inaugural Lecture of Visiting Professor Manish Parashar. Manish is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at Rutgers University. His lecture will explore big data challenges in simulation-based science and how various solutions can be used to address these problems.

Bare Reality: 100 women, their breasts, their stories Wednesday 21 October 2015, starting at 4pm

Award-winning photographer, Laura Dodsworth, will talk about her latest art photography project, Bare Reality, where 100 women bravely share untouched photographs of their breasts alongside honest, courageous and moving stories about their breasts and lives.

Laura will talk about the background to Bare Reality, and share images and extracts from the stories, her conclusions and her own personal transformation.

From Dark Tourism to Light Tourism: The story of a tank called Deborah Wednesday 11 November 2015, 6pm-8pm

The tale of Deborah the Tank – as told by the grandson of the soldier who commanded it in one of the largest tank battles in the First World War. Principal Lecturer Tim Heap describes how bringing history back to life has given tourism in France a boost.

November Banks Mill Open Studios & Artisan Fair Friday 20 November to Sunday 22 November 2015 (Fri 5pm-8pm, Sat and Sun 10am-5pm)

For three days a year, Banks Mill Studios opens its doors to the public to celebrate the arts in Derby. Come along to see artists, designers and makers working in their studios to create amazing handmade products, original artwork and offering creative services.

The Artisan Fair at the Enterprise Centre is just a minute’s walk from Banks Mill, and you can browse stalls to buy Derby-made artwork.
