We hope you’re enjoying this beautiful fall season on Hilton Head Island! We might not have colorful fall leaves, but we do have beautiful live oak trees, palmettos and pines, as well as blissful breezes and all kinds of fun events and activities going on all month.

Whether you’re looking to get out and explore or sit back and relax, Hilton Head is sure to have some-thing you’ll enjoy. Kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, ziplining, parasailing and biking are just a few of our personal favorites, not to mention the dolphin and discovery cruises, Gullah tours and off shore fishing charters. And with hammocks hanging around at resorts and 12 miles of sandy beaches beckoning, there are plenty of places to unwind after a long day of exploring.

There are a lot of ways to have fun on the island – day and night! Don’t forget to check out Music & Taste on Thursday nights at Shelter Cove Harbour and all the restaurants at Shelter Cove Towne Centre for great live music at night, comedy shows and entertain-ment when the stars start to come out.

October is full of exciting events all month. The Burgers & Brew Festival on Oct. 3 kicks off the fall festivities and they continue with the Regatta weekend boat races on Oct. 17 & 18. It all leads up to the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival and Concours D’Elegance, where owners will showcase everything from classic cars to wooden boats and even vintage aircrafts from Oct. 30-Nov. 1. What should you wear to such an event? Katie Hatfield lets youknow in her fashion feature, which showcases an outfit you can getfrom stores right here on the island!

Be sure to check out our Calendar of Events to find out about all of the spooky fun going on this Halloween! Rumor has it that all of the cars from the Motoring Festival will head over to Shelter Cove Towne Centre and pop their trunks so kids can trick-or-treat!

Also in this issue of Island Events, our talented columnists share a few secrets about the island. While Captain Miles Altman takes us out over water and shows us how to catch the speckled seatrout, Jessie Renew explains how to spot an American Oystercatcher and Master Naturalist Kathleen McMenamin tells us where we’ll find minks swimming and scurrying around. Golf Instructor Doug Weaver will take you out on the course and let you in on a few things about golfing on the Island.

We hope all of our listings are helpful in guiding you to some of the very best that the island has to offer. As always, the best of the Lowcountry and the Coastal Empire is just a click away at hiltonhead.com, hiltonheadisland.com, bluffton.com, savannah.com, stsimonsisland.com and beaufort.com. It’s there you’ll find digital copies of all of our publications and a wealth of information about what to do while you’re here. All of our websites are accessible via smartphone, so you can find the best shops, restaurants and activi-ties no matter where you are.

We hope you enjoy your time on Hilton Head Island and come back to see us again soon!

By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

A ttention Pinot Grigio drinkers! If this is your“go to” wine when dining out I completely

understand. It is reasonably priced, consistently good and the flavors are subtle and refreshing, making it the perfect wine to sip before during and after your meal. Sometimes the wine selections by the glass options are limited. You find the Chardonnay too heavy, the Sauvignon Blanc too aromatically intense and the Riesling, too sweet. If you happen to be at a restaurant with a larger wine selection, here are three alternatives typically sold by the glass that are worth exploring.

First, one important note: Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same wine. It is a matter of origin and sometime only preference as to which name is used. It is more commonly know as Pinot Grigio in Italy and Pinot Gris in France. The U.S. and other countries use both names.

Pinot Blanc – The Pinot Blanc grape is a very close relative of Pinot Grigio. Surprisingly the Pinot Grigio grape is not really a white grape. The skin has a brownish color hence the name Gris, which means gray in French. Pinot Blanc is the real white grape in the Pinot family. Like Pinot Grigio, it has neutral aromas and is crisp and refreshing. Pinot Blanc tends to be fuller bodied and have more mineral flavors, while Pinot Grigio tends to be fruitier. One note of caution, however, is that some winemakers like to oak age Pinot Blanc, which will make it taste closer to a Chardonnay. If you are not a fan of Chardonnay you most likely will not like the oaked version of Pinot Blanc.

South African Chenin Blanc – Traditional Chenin Blanc originates in the Loire Valley of France, especially Vouvray. These wines tend to be sweeter, full-bodied and very aromatic – all wonderful qualities, but not what you are looking for if you are a Pinot Grigio drinker. Lately, South Africa has been turning out some great, reasonably priced versions that are a delightful alternative to Pinot Grigio.

The grapes are harvested earlier which result in

Pinot Alternatives

dry, lighter wines with less aromatics, citrus aromas and touches of honey. If the grapes are left on the vine a bit longer, they develop tropical fruit aromas that are reminiscent of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. While they can be fairly aromatic, they lack the biting, grassy nose that some dislike in Sauvignon, making them more appealing for Pinot drinkers.

Spanish Albarino – If you enjoy high quality Italian Pinot Grigio but find it to be out of your price range, then Spanish Albarino is the answer. This surprisingly underrated wine is excellent and should really be on more wine lists. Soft texture, hints of apple and peach and nice acidity are its trademarks. If you are looking for a fresher, sharper version of Pinot Grigio, make sure that the wine is only a year or two old. Older versions while still delicious will have lost a bit of their zest.

The perfect bottle of wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Road. Free tastings are available during store hours, Monday-Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Enjoy wine by the glass and a cheese platter during store hours. Cheese platter is complimentary with purchase of three or more bottles of wine! (843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com.

Believe it or not, at one time it was rare to see an alligator.

They were an endan gered species, hunted almost to the

point of extinction. Many were killed for their leather to make shoes and purses, or for their meat, or just because people were afraid of them.

Today we can see alli gators pretty easily since they are now protec t ed by the Endangered Species Act.

If you ever see an alligator, leave it alone.

Don’t try to make it move or “do some thing” by throw ing sticks or other things at it.

Alligators can move really fast. In fact, they can outrun any human over a short distance. There is a myth that if an alligator chases you, run in zig-zags. This isn’t true. They can turn in different direc tions just fine.

Another VERY important rule to remember about alligators is don’t feed them. This is so impor tant that it’s against the law to feed alligators.

Normally alligators don’t want to be around people. But, when someone feeds them, the ‘gators learn that where there are people, there is food.

So, when you see alli gators around the Low country, admire them from a distance.

F rom the day they were designed, classic cars have always been in vogue, inspiring some of the most classic movies in American cinema, as well as some of the most iconic looks on the runway and in magazines. The Motoring and Concours d’Elegance Festival cele-

brates classic cars and aviation with events split between Savannah and Hilton Head. From October 30 to November 1, the island will be filled with all types of motor vehicles celebrat-ing the history of transportation. Don’t let the cars be the only ones shining at this festival; check out these looks and get a few compliments on your outfit as well.

Greased LightningSandra Dee and Danny Zuko may have had more drama than even the Rizz, but one thing is for sure: they knew how to dress. Flowing girly dresses combined with a leather biker jacket get the perfect good girl gone bad look. Make sure to find a leather jacket with lots of hard-ware to really pull together that look. Colored flats and a textured bag finish off this “Greased Lightning” look with comfort and style tailor made for the Car Club Showcase.

The Fast and the Furious

While drag racing may be illegal, you can definitely take inspira-tion from souped-up, and tricked out engines with a new, modern style that looks great and feels even better. This look is all about taking the classically masculine and transforming it into the stylish and feminine with great leather leggings to show off the shape of your leg, a strappy, eye catch-ing patterned tank top, and

a structured, sleek jacket. The goal is to emulate the

structure of the newer drag racing cars, just like Vin Diesel’s

Dodge Charger.

Leggings, jacket, top and shoes can be found at Copper Penny.

In the summer, dozens of female loggerhead sea turtles drag themselves onto local beaches, crawl above the high tide line and dig a nest. After laying more than a 100 eggs, these 300pound rep tiles make their way slowly back to the ocean.

Following a 60day incu ba tion period, the hatch lings wait for night fall and then race towards the water, using the moon and stars as a guide.

Extremely sensitive to light and move ment,

the females will turn around without nesting if disturbed while on the beach. On the other hand, baby turtles are attracted to light and will head towards the source rather than the ocean.

To protect this threatened species, both Hilton Head Island and Beaufort County have “Lights Out For Turtles” ordinances.

From May 1 through October 31, no light stronger than 60 watts may be visible on the beach from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. It is a federal offense to harass sea turtles or disturb their nests.

For more information on Hilton Head Island’s Sea Turtle Protection Project, contact the Coastal Discovery Museum at (843) 689-6767 or visit coastaldiscovery.org.

Kayaking One of the best ways to expe ri ence Island wildlife up close is by paddling through the calm tidal creeks and marshlands on a kayak. Experi enced naturalists will point out dolphins, otters, alligators, egrets, herons, terns, peli cans, osprey, eagles and more on sunrise, morning, after noon, sunset or full moon excursions. Basic instruction is pro vid ed and special kayak camps are offered in the summer months for children and teenagers.

ParasailingSoar hundreds of feet above the water for an experience you’ll always remember! Whether you fly solo or bring a copilot, don’t forget to bring your video camera to capture the view for miles in every direction. Fun for all ages, expe rienced USCG captains and instructors are sure to make the flight a safe and memorable one.

Jet SkiingThose who feel a need for speed will find jet skis and waverunners designed for one to three people available for rent at area marinas. This fun way to get around on the water doesn’t require any expe ri ence and is sure to delight all ages. Just don’t forget to bring the sunscreen.

Water SkiingFor those who actually want to be in the water, try waterskiing and wake boarding with the dolphins right here on Hilton Head Island. Calm local waters are perfect for these fun sports and experienced captains can have you up on your first try!

Sport FishingNovice to expert fishermen will find inshore, offshore, kayak, fly fishing and Gulf Stream fishing a chal lenge unlike any other. Whether you are looking for sea trout, spot tail bass, Spanish mackerel, tarpon, red drum or shark, experienced local captains will guide you to the best fishing grounds in the area.

The BeachEnjoy hours of entertainment on Hilton Head Island’s 12 miles of whitesand beaches. Fly a kite, look for shells, build castles in the sand, splash in the surf, catch a wave on a boogie board or try body surfing into shore.

Nature CruisesWatch dolphins play alongside the boat, alligators basking in the sun or pelicans swooping down to catch their dinner on a guided nature cruise through local waterways. You never know what you may see!

Stand-Up PaddleboardingThe fastest growing watersport in the world, standup paddle board ing is an ancient Hawaiian form of surfing. Today, this easytolearn sport is a favorite of hip Hollywood celebrities and families looking for a way to stay cool.

Visit the King Neptune Statue at Shelter Cove Harbour

The towering 12-foot bronze statue of Neptune, which doubles as a larger-than-life sundial, serves as an iconic symbol of Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, welcoming visitors to the entrance of the popular waterfront dining and shopping location.

Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this much-loved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The King Neptune statue, which depicts a bearded Neptune holding his signature trident, serves as a popular centerpiece at Shelter Cove Harbour. The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge.

When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot wide base, the numbers indicate thepre cise time. Hailed as the world’s largestfigurative sundi al, the statue was origi nallycast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jerseyand shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in1983. Engineers made meticulous measure-ments before the one-ton statue was installed,

ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time.

They oriented the sculpture towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star.

An official dedication for the statue was held at Shelter Cove Harbour on August 11, 1983, attracting residents and visitors alike. Today, the King Neptune statue delights gen-erations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages. Stop by to see King Neptune in person and to expe rience a true Hilton Head Island icon.

A rmed with a set of fangs that would makeany snake or vampire jealous, a voracious

appetite and an explosive strike, the speckled seatrout ranks in the top three inshore game fish, along with flounder and red drum. Often attacking prey their own size, the strike of the seatrout is hard to beat. One nice “gator” trout I caught last winter almost took the rod out of my hands when he struck the plastic bait I tossed near the bank. My intentions were to let it sink a minute, so I had relaxed my grip on the rod and certainly didn’t expect the force of the trout’s attack. The fish weighed six pounds.

While after a cold winter the trout population sometimes dips, it seems like the past mild win-ter holds promise of booming schools of trout this season. In September, large schools of 13-inch fish were plentiful and with the trout’sappetite they should be much larger as winterpasses. Some of their favorite prey is fingermullet, mud minnows and shrimp.

While the shrimp are plentiful in the creeks, I prefer to use them live. As the water tempera-ture drops and the shrimp leave, I switch to artificial baits – soft plastics with paddle tails or screw tails – and scented plastics like the Gulp products, or hard lures like the Mirrolure or

Mighty Mike. I have caught them on a chunk of dead mullet on the bottom while fishing for redfish, but the other methods should produce better numbers of fish.

If using live bait – finger mullet, shrimp or mud minnow – a popping cork with three foot of leader and a 2/0 or 3/0 circle or kahle hook will produce good results. Small live menhaden are also favorite food for the voracious trout. Working the popping cork vigorously will increase your strikes, because while some fish spook easily, the trout is fearless. Long ago we used to troll the grass edge of the creeks and the motor never bothered them.

Sleek, silvery, iridescent and covered with spots, the speckled seatrout is a beautiful, hard striking, tough fighting fish that provides an angling experience that is hard to beat. When taken to the table the delicious, flaky flesh is the icing on the cake!

H ilton Head has many different mammalsthat love island living. The mink is a less

known mammal that lives in our beautiful salt marshes. They are mostly seen during low tides, swimming across channels or scurrying to the water line to catch fish.

The North American Mink, Mustela vison, are long slender-bodied mammals. They have short stocky legs, not reaching more than four inches tall, but they can get up to lengths of up to four feet long. Males tend to be larger than females, getting up to about four pounds. They have dark brown pelts, with occasional white patches on their neck or belly. They have very strong scent glands and produce a strong must, similar to other species in the weasel family.

They can be found in all of the continental 49 states. They inhabit salt marshes, rivers, swamps and small wooded streams. They create dens in root systems, rock outcrops along streams and bankside holes. Males may create multiple den sites within their mile territory range while females tend to have one den and don’t travel as far as males. In our saltwater marshes, they create dens among the spartina roots in areas that stay above the high tide line. Mink populations in the state of South Carolina are significantly higher in the coastal marshes and the upper foothill areas. They are well adapted to our environment and can dive in the water up to 20-feet deep and swim underwater up to 100 feet. In our area, they are more commonly seen swimming on the surface with their faces sticking out of the water.

Mink are carnivores that mostly eat fish. Crabs, shrimp, snails and shellfish fill their diet as well. Like many animals in our marsh systems, they take advantage of dolphin strand feeding. As dolphins push schools of

fish onto marsh flats, the mink can be seen running toward the water line to catch spare fish left stranded by the dolphin. Minks are mostly known to be nocturnal throughout the U.S. However, in our coastal area they can commonly be seen during daylight hours.

They are polygamous animals. Breeding occurs from January to March and courtship can be very aggressive at times. Females have a 40- to 75-day gestation period. She will have one litter of kits each year. Litters will yield up to four kits at a time and the young will nurse on their mother for nine weeks. The family will stay together until the following fall, when the young, which reach the maturity weight between four and nine months, will disperse to find their own territories.

These animals have shown a decline in our area since the 1950s. Mink have very few predators, which includes other mammals and predatory birds. Development of their marsh habitat and water pollution are the main causes of their decline. South Carolina allows hunting of mink, which is done for their pelts. Although they are hunted, this is not the reason for their decline. South Carolina has strict laws on where and how many mink are allowed to be hunted in a season. Most mink pelts sold today are from ranch-raised mink, thus there has been a significant decline in trapping wild mink across the U.S.

As summer winds to a close andcooler temperatures move in, the

wild Lowcountry begins its transition into the roosting season. The visible spartina grass dies off, leaving the dense root system alive, ready to spring into action next year. The millions of organisms suspended in the water either die off or mature, leaving the salty waterways much clearer than in the fertile summer. Live oaks subtly lose and replace their waxy leaves. For our local birdlife, it is a time of movement and change as well, with each species taking a different approach to over win-tering. The American Oystercatcher species is one of individualism, with each bird choosing its own way to spend the winter.

The American Oystercatcher is a very easy bird to identify. It is the largest spe-cies of wading bird, usually found hanging around with the diminutive Ruddy Turnstone, Plovers and Willets. Its body is black on top and white under-neath, with an eye-catching contrast of colors on its wings. But its most notice-able feature is its large and pointed, bright orange-red beak. The oyster-catcher also has noticeable orange eyes, which, like its beak, contrast with its black head.

Oystercatchers are probing shore birds, and prey on bivalves and worms. At low tide, they survey oyster beds looking for partially opened shells. In one swift movement they jam their impressive beak into the shell and disable the muscle that closes the shell. They then enjoy the gooey insides of the animal. This tech-nique requires some skill, and if they don’t manage to disable the muscle in time, the oyster can close on the beak and hold the bird captive. Incoming tides can then drown the trapped bird. Here in the Lowcountry, our large tidal swings are ideal for oystercatchers to hunt bivalves that live in the intertidal zone.

Territory is the number one behavioral concern for the oystercatcher. They usu-ally begin to breed at four years old,

68 ISLAND EVENTS OCTOBER 2015 hiltonhead.com

but start to stake out their breeding territory a year prior. Upon reaching sexual maturity, they find a mate and stake their claim on a particular territory - usually a beach, sandbar or shell bank close to an oysterbed. When spring comes the pair create several potential nest sites, which are shallow depressions in the ground. Together they choose the most appropriate site and pad it with organic matter. The female lays up to four speck-led eggs and both parents incubate the eggs for about 39 days. Once hatched, the parents use the proximate oyster bed to provide food for the young.

While adult oystercatchers have virtually no predators, eggs and juveniles are exposed to a number of dan-gers. Their ground nests are susceptible to being washed away, driven over or stepped on by animals and humans. Foxes, raccoons and cats target the young birds. Those that survive the first summer travel with one of their parents to roosting grounds in the fall.

The oystercatchers that breed in our local waterways do not travel far for winter. They usually go slightly further inland and live in denser groups. However, those oyster-catchers that live north of South Carolina migrate south each fall. They do not generally migrate in groups; rather each bird chooses their own path, with family groups and couples often parting ways. The main roosting areas for American Oystercatchers are located at the Cape Romaine Seashore near Charleston South Carolina and our own Skull Creek Intracoastal Waterway, which sepa-rates Hilton Head from the mainland.

There are approximately 11,000 oystercatchers left on the Atlantic Coast of the United States and they are threatened by loss of habitat through coastal develop-ment, pollution, disturbance, predation and climate change. Seeing the mating pairs or roosting groups is a fantastic treat. Get Outside this October and you may see our local oystercatchers or visiting “snow birds.”For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has pro-vided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and stand-up paddle board-ing. Don’t miss the guided full moon kayak tour, which explores the saltmarsh. (843) 686-6996 or outsidehiltonhead.com.

70 ISLAND EVENTS OCTOBER 2015 hiltonhead.com

1. We have 21 golf courses on a smallisland of 12 miles.

The competition ensures five star quality in conditions and service. The island has hosted per capita more PGA Tour, Champions Tour, men and women’s col-legiate, USGA Championships, Special Olympics North American Championships and advanced junior tournaments than any city in the world. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III and Matt Kuchar all played here in college tournaments.

2. Most of the courses on the island have Bermuda grass.

When preparing to putt and reading the green, look for the different colors of grass. If it is dark between you and the hole it will be a slow putt. If it is bright between you and the hole it will be a fast putt. If you are putting across the grain your ball will curve more than the slope says. Here are clues to look for: drainage grates, setting sun, slopes, broken edges of the cup and ruffed up grass on the green.

3. Divots on the courses are notreplaced.

Instead we repair the divoted spot with pure sand. This promotes quicker healing and a smoother sur-face. The local Bermuda grass has deep roots into the sandy soil. These roots will grow up through the sand faster than replacing the broken roots.

4. More than a few of the Hilton Head courses have hosted internationallyrecognized competitions.

This means they are championship golf courses and tougher and more demanding than most. When playing the more difficult holes, the tendency is to aim away from the trouble. Face your fears by aim-ing correctly down the middle and trusting, relaxing the grip and letting the club do the work.

5. Beaches aren’t the only place you’ll findsand on Hilton Head.

The George Fazio Golf Course alone has 86 large sand traps. This is about five sand traps per hole, some of which you can’t see out of. If you learn

how to play the different sand shots, then you will conquer the course and understand why the pros often intentionally place the ball in the bunker. Allow a PGA professional to teach you a technique that will make the sand shot the easiest shot in golf.

6. The firm fairways of our island courses are caused by the sand-based soil.

The water percolates quickly through the top layer giving you a firm fairway and short, tight Bermuda grass lies. Hit down and through the ball, making a divot after impact, instead of picking the ball, which results in less distance and backspin both necessary to score consistently in the 70s. Learning to strike the ball on the downswing, resulting in an invigorating release of energy in the swing, is what we all are looking for.

7. Golf courses on the island are coolerthan those on the mainland.

The weather channel is often wrong; the weather is cooler than the mainland (because of breezes) and we often get less rain. We are unsure what exactly happens, but the clouds often stop over the main-land and never make it to the island. Many times we see the bad weather to the west, but don’t let that forecast dampen your spirit.

8. Hilton Head Island is home to severalPGA certified and experienced coaches.

Vacations and retirement can be a time of focus on the action steps that will elevate your game to the level you desire. Start with a free lesson Monday from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course driving range. Successful coaches will nur-ture you efficiently through the stages of develop-ing and simplifying your game. Remember golf is not an easy game, but it is a game of ease.

A former PGA Touring Pro, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?,” a free hands-on interactive clinic and demonstration, every Monday at 4 p.m. (843) 785-1138, (800) 827-3006 or palmettodunes.com.

An American Classic

Considered one of the most iconic plays of our time, this crackling courtroom drama explores the fundamental

right to freedom of thought. Based on actual events in the 1920s, Inherit the Wind is a riveting story about a conflict

in American culture that’s as relevant today as it was then. The New York Times called it “one of the most stirring

productions...bursting with vitality!” Following its opening to rave reviews, the play has been revived on Broadway

twice, winning Tony and Outer Circle Awards.
