Christmas Trees For Missions

The HCC Christmas Tree Stand for missions

opens November 28th. We will be selling

Douglas, Grand, and Noble Fir Trees ranging in

height from 3 to 9 plus feet. In addition to the

trees we will also have the cross and round

wreaths available.

Support short-term missions and the spreading of

the Gospel by:

·Purchasing your trees and wreaths from

HCC

·Inviting friends and neighbors to get their

trees and wreaths from HCC

·Volunteering to help staff the stand for a

shift or two.

Volunteer sign-ups are located at the table in the

Atrium during our weekend services.

From our Church Life Director

Hi Everyone,

The only problem with our rock-star Senior Pastor,

Dr. Tim Knight, is that you run out of superlatives

in describing his ability to communicate God's

word through the Scriptures. That said, the body

is buzzing about his sermons on Mark. The best

part is that we're only about a quarter of the way

through this book! Like you, I can't wait to hear

the rest.

In addition to the pulpit, the HCC body is moving.

Jenny Louvier keeps The Women In Touch

ministry moving forward. Saturday 11.1.14 was

another very successful monthly breakfast, helping

women to get and stay in touch. The WIT Craft

Night on 11.14.14 was a glamorous box of fun that

also helped to stock the Transform Burien pantry.

Since we are still in November, let me encourage

you to call Sue Evans @ 206.878.7330 or Gayle

Wylie @ 206.772.6231 for more information

regarding this ministry's A Blessed Christmas

Celebration on Friday 12.5.14. This will be an

evening to remember, and they are not kidding

when they say that tickets are going fast—in fact

they just sold out. Please call if you are interested

in being put on a waiting list.

Jim Kemp, Tim Crawford, Don Berg and the

Transform Burien leaders are leading a small army

of HCC volunteers in our amped-up dedication to

this outreach program. We have hosted a

successful breakfast on 11.8.14 and a plentiful

ham dinner on 11.23.14.

Another small group on the

move is Shoemaker Circle.

The entire congregation

enjoyed their always-

anticipated Annual Bake

Sale & Bazaar on Saturday

11.22.14 and Sunday

Early Childhood Ministry Needs

Your Help!

The Early Childhood Ministry

is filling up! We have many

children coming, and are in

need of more helpers! When

we do not have enough help, families have to be

turned away from coming to class.

There are needs for people to help watch children

on Saturday nights. There is a need for a teacher

for the Butterfly Class (children ages 2) for

the 10:40 service. More helpers are needed

weekly, as well.

If you would like to serve in any of these

areas, please call or email Katie Ta ylor.

[email protected]

Thank you for helping us serve the children

at Highline!

Thank You HCC! The Bake Sale/Bazaar

collected $566 to be give to mission support such

as Transform Burien Center.

hub (hub) n. 1 the

center part of a wheel

2 a center of activity

Can You Believe It Has Been Nearly A Year?

On January 4, 2014, we officially launched the

HUB. H.U.B. stands for Highline Unity Builder.

The HUB is an integral part of our church life and

community. In a simple view, it is just computer

software, but it is really much more, and our

purpose for it is to connect our body and create a

stronger church community. Highline uses this

software in quite a few ways. If you want to be

“in the know” and well connected to the Highline

church community then you will really enjoy using

the HUB. To get started using the HUB, go to our

website www.highlinechristian.org and find the

H.U. B. box in the middle of the page—fill it out

and you are on your way.

Since the launch, 486 people have logged in and

edited their profile. They have also added pictures

of themselves and their family members—as of

today we have 551 pictures. Way to go!

Remember you can upload your own favorite

photo if you would like or we will be happy to

take a picture for you and upload it. We are

planning to have photographers near the Welcome

Center on December 6 and 7, before and after our

weekend services if you still need a picture for the

HUB.

Remember you can also use the HUB to give

online. Simply log in to the HUB, click the

“Give” tab at the top of the Home Page and follow

the directions. You can either give a one time gift

or set up a recurring gift. It is safe, simple and

secure!

Please contact the office if you need more

information or have questions about online giving,

uploading a picture or help using the HUB:

[email protected] or 206-243-4333.

Church Life—(continued from page 2)

11.23.14. These ladies do great work in several

areas and they have a bright 2015 ahead!

Gregg Louvier has selflessly volunteered to

supervise our 2014 Christmas Trees For Missions

project. Pastor Bret of Family & Children's

Ministry and Pastor Steve of Youth Ministry have

also volunteered to give big chunks of their time to

this project. Buying your trees here, and

volunteering to work the tree stand, helps to spread

God's love around the world! We unload the trees

directly after the Thanksgiving service on

11.26.14, and volunteer sign-up sheets are in the

Atrium.

We celebrate God's greatest act of love, sending

his son to the world, at our Outdoor Living

Nativity 2014. While this event needs no

advertisement, it is one of our most beloved annual

events and in 2014 the celebrations will be on

Friday, 12.12.14 at 7, 7:30 and 8 P.M. & Saturday,

12.13.14 at 6:30, 7, 7:30 and 8 P.M.

Let me also report that we had a great TOUCH 1

class capably headed by Scott Barnes and Gregg

Louvier this month! Fourteen people attended

classes ably taught by Gregg, Mark Champneys

and Carole Marcille. I taught, too. We look

forward to our group continuing their walk with us

at Highline.

Thank you for putting up with this quick run-

through of the many great things happening at

Highline Christian Church. More will be

happening and reported on in our January

eNewsletter. Until then, please visit the H.U.B.

for updates. By the way, we've had many

compliments on our updated home page photo

celebrating Thanksgiving. That wouldn't be there

without the selfless and time-consuming work of

Erik and Katie Peterson. God bless you both!

Yours in Christ,

Jack

Spiritual Warfare Class

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your

adversary the devil prowls around like a

roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that

the same kinds of suffering are being

experienced by your brotherhood

throughout the world.

1 Peter 5:8-9

There will be a new Spiritual Warfare Class

beginning on January 18, 2015. The class will be

offered during the 9:00 a.m. service, and will be

held upstairs in the Great Room. It is anticipated

that this class will last 16 to18 weeks. The first

class in the series will begin with, “What is spiritual

warfare, and why is it important to us?” and the

final class in the series will answer the question,

“What can we do?”

During this series, we will be taking a look at some

of the essential Christian doctrines we need to keep

firmly in our mind in order to understand the

meaning of Spiritual Warfare.

We will then go on to look at the beliefs and

practices of some of the “cult” groups in the United

States, as well as some “cult” groups centered right

her in the greater Seattle area. We will look at

“occult” groups around the world and those right

here in our back

yard. We will also

talk about some of

the people who

have been the most

influential in both

cult and occult

groups.

In the January

newsletter, we will

have a more

comprehensive list

of what we will be

teaching each

week.

Thank you!

Words cannot possibly express my

appreciation for the Christian love shown to

my family and me following the recent

Homecoming of my dear husband Steve.

Thank you to all who provided the delicious

lunch for my family. The outpouring of

cards, floral arrangements, phone calls, food

items, hugs, visits and shared tears were

among the many demonstrations of how a

body of Christ works. We thank you deeply

and we covet your continued prayers for

comfort and for wisdom in discerning God's

leading for the future.

With a heart overflowing with gratitude,

Nurse Jennifer’s

Thoughts on Ebola

I pray with Joy “because of your

partnership in the gospel from the first day until

now, being confident of this, that HE who began a

good work in you will carry it on to completion

until the day of Jesus Christ.” Phil 1:6.

My Highline family

has been part of my life for

so many years,

approximately 15 I think.

Many of you know me as

“Jennifer…..Carolyn’s

sister,” or “Jennifer, who

sings on the Praise &

Worship Team,” or maybe Pastor Bret’s camp

nurse/lifeguard. I also am found on Wednesday

nights hanging out with Women in the Word. A

large part of my nurturing by and relationship with

my Highline family was participation and support

and tears and love as I did

medical short term mission

trips, 2003 – 2009, to……

Liberia, West Africa (lots of

people know of this place

today).

In 2003, war torn

Liberia had rebels reported 60 miles out of the

capital city of Monrovia, where we were to be

working. I was so emotionally shaken by that first

2 week trip, no one ever dreamed I would go

back!! But GO BACK I did!! Each year staying

and working longer periods of time. In 2006, I

stayed for 8 months. My

last trip was in 2009,

working with Medical

Teams Northwest, nursing

inside a hospital called

ELWA (Eternal Love

Winning Africa). This

hospital and compound was

Christmas Blessings for Kenya Church of Christ

Children's Home

Mama Florence has 53 beautiful children. She

would give her life for any of them, as she nearly

did recently when curious and adventuresome, two-

year-old Bravine wandered into the path of an

ornery cow. The cow charged little Bravine.

Without a thought for her own safety, Mama

Florence dashed out into the pasture to rescue him.

Bravine, who had just had one eye removed

because of cancer, was safe, but brave Mama

Florence suffered a badly broken leg. She is still

recovering.

Those that care for the beautiful orphan children at

Kenya Church of Christ, daily make personal

sacrifices so that these precocious and precious kids

can experience the security of love, of safety and

have opportunities to heal, to learn, to grow well

and to experience the greater care of The Heavenly

Father, who not only risked pain, but willingly gave

His Only Son that they might live and know the

abundance of His unfailing love. These kids don't

ask for or expect much in the way of material

goods. One thing they do look forward to each year

is their one opportunity to shop in town and buy

clothes, one set, that they have chosen. To the older

children, this is huge. Available funds will not

cover this.

Highline’s choir is asking

any of those interested in

helping to raise the $530

needed, to come alongside

them this month, so that

by the Christmas

Celebration in Kitale,

each child will be able to

experience a tangible and

personal gift from

Highline. Gifts can be

designated: "Kitale Kids

Christmas." Asante sana,

Highline.

built and served by

missionaries with SIM

(Serving in Missions),

and Samaritians Purse.

I dare say there

are very few persons in

the US today who have

not heard of Liberia

battling this horrific

Hemorrhagic Ebola Virus. This ruthless virus has

seeped its way into community, church, school,

government across Liberia.

And WE who lived and served and loved

the people of Liberia are heartbroken and desperate

to help.

It is time to turn to my church family and

ask, “Can we help?”

Could we pray and ask our Sovereign God in all

his power and might….”Please stop this virus.”

Please, brothers and sisters, join with me

over these next few weeks as you go to God in

your personal “closet” time with God, and talk to

Him about this Ebola virus in Liberia. Ask God to

please stop this and heal their land. Increase the

faith and trust of Liberians in their precious Savior.

We have an opportunity to give financially

to help BATTLE THIS EBOLA VIRUS IN

LIBERIA. After praying God’s direction, if you

feel so led to give, the monies will be collected and

sent to SIM (Serving in Missions) in North

Carolina to help with sending containers of

medical supplies and Personal Protective

Equipment, or directly to ELWA in Liberia. Please

visit Ebola Crisis Relief Fund or SIM.org or

helpebola.org.

Bless you for your

heart to love God’s

people throughout

the world.

In HIM,

Jennifer Munday

Ebola—(continued from page 5) Thank you, Highline,

for your efforts and

generosity in

providing shoeboxes

of gifts for needy

children in other

countries! Highline

provided 349 Operation Christmas Boxes this

year! This was an increase from the 262 boxes

provided last year. Thank you, again! Below are

some of the ways that you can pray for the

Operation Christmas Boxes as their journey has

just begun. Thank you, in advance, for praying!

Thank God for the 113+ million boxes that

have been sent since 1993.

Pray that just the right box will get to just the

child who needs it. Pray for the volunteers who are working at the

Distribution Centers during the week following

Thanksgiving. Pray for the volunteers who work year-round

to collect, process, transport and deliver

shoeboxes. Pray that the Lord would use OCC to bring joy

to children who face daily difficulties such as

poverty, disease, famine, and war.

Pray that each child who receives a box will

hear about Jesus Christ.

Pray that each child who receives a box will

experience God's unconditional love & provision

through their gifts. Pray that the children, esp those who enroll in

The Greatest Journey discipleship program, will

come to faith in Jesus Christ. Pray for the safety of OCC workers in

countries hostile to Christians. Pray that the logistics of getting the OCC

boxes across borders and into countries goes

smoothly.

If you took an OCC box home and were unable to

fill it this year, please return it to the church

building.

I encourage you to begin now being on the lookout

for items to put in next year's OCC boxes.

Love, Tammie Lindblom

Dear Highline Church, We are so blessed and

grateful for your continuing ministry to us,

as we minister to those who are behind bars

and their families. Without YOU this

ministry would not exist! The following

letter is an example that shows the changed

hearts of those who have been blessed by

your love and support. We know this letter

will touch your hearts, as they did ours:

Tom S. @ WCC-Shelton, wrote this month…

“Dear Pastor Michael, I pray daily to

surrender my will to God. He brought me

here and gave me a job in the Law

Library!! When I was in the Chapel, God

led me to a book called’ Serve in the Spirit’

by Watchman Nee. What a blessing this

book has been. He talks about the

breaking of the “outward man” (old self).

The Lord arranges the most suitable

environment for us, causing our inward

man to grow and our outward man to

break~and~never neglect the arrangement

of environment! Once we are enlightened

by the Lord, it is easy to accept discipline.

As the light shines, we bow our heads and

pray, “O Lord! I praise you!” I want to be

able to fully accept His Will for me and be

able to say: “Oh Father! How can I not

drink the cup You gave me?” I was in the

Word and the Holy Spirit led me to: Phil.

Women in Touch Spotl ight: Sue Hansz Evans

Where were you born? I was born in a little town in Summerfield, Oklahoma and came to Washington with my parents when I was 3 months old. I was the youngest of 4 girls until my youngest sister came along 8 years later. Tell us about your upbringing: I didn’t grow up in a Christian home, though my Mom knew about God and sang hymns as she worked around the house. Neither of my parents could read or write and so the adults in Sunday School became like parents to me in many ways. Tell us about your studies: When a teenager, I went with a missionary from the American Sunday School Union throughout the Puget Sound area, visiting rural churches, giving our testimony and singing at their church services. I left Washington to go off to Multnomah School of the Bible. After graduating, I went out with a youth mission called Operation Mobilization distributing Bibles and Christian literature to parts of Europe. Fun fact: My teammate and I were arrested in France & hauled off to jail. After returning home from Europe, I lived in Bremerton and worked for the Sun Newspaper. Tell about your family: My late husband and I had gotten to know each other during my last year at Bible College and his first year there, after just getting out of the Navy. [One day] I was sitting at my desk and he came through the door and announced he was taking a break from college and would be living in Bremerton. We spent the next year becoming best friends and he surprised me one evening and asked me to marry him. Fun fact: We were married in November 1966, but I had made him wait all Summer for my answer. God gave us a daughter and 2 sons. I was a stay-at-home mom during those years and served the Lord in many areas of church ministry. After my last son graduated, my husband became totally disabled. The next few years of caring for my husband were hard, but God gave me some amazing opportunities to serve Him, and He gave us all we needed for the lean years that followed until Jim went to be with the Lord in 2002. God was good to me through those years of being alone. I often visited my sister in Auburn, WA during those years. While visiting my sister, I got to know a man named Jerry Evans. Jerry was a widower and we thought we had a lot in common. We were married after knowing each other for 2 years, so I left everything behind in Oregon and moved back to Washington in July, 2006 to become Jerry’s wife.

How do you enjoy spending your time? One of the favorite things God has allowed me to do since I retired and remarried, is to travel. I love any place in the sun and have taken many trips to Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe and to the Mediterranean. Some of my favorite things to do during the years have been to parasail, hike, snorkel, drive my little red Miata convertible with the top down, enjoying the Summer sun and breeze on my face, and letting God heal my heart through worship and praise music. My favorite trip of all times took about a month, exploring Italy, the Greek Isles, French Monaco, Turkey, and Tunisia where I had a chance to visit some of the places the Apostle

Paul spoke of on his journeys. Spending time with my two granddaughters is now one of the highlights of my life. I am so thankful for all of my family and the precious times we spend together. God has taken the hard times and the sad songs and from them made new songs composed of both laughter and tears. God has blessed me with so much, how can I keep from praising His name!

December Happenings!

For the month of December, your children will be having a special class time.

All of the classes will be beginning in their regular class rooms for special activities,

except for the Raccoon class. (The Raccoon and Blue Birds will be joining together in

the Blue Bird room. ) During the Big God Story, the children in the Butterfly class,

Hedgehog class, Raccoon class, and Blue Bird class will all come together for the lesson

time. This will be an amazing opportunity for the kids to all come together and learn at

the same time. Our classroom will be transformed into a special place for worship for

the month. All of the children will gather together for the story, a time to respond to

worship, and prayer. You will check out the children back in their classrooms at the

end of service.

Family Pajama and Cookie Night

Friday, December 19th will be a fun event for families with children who are in

the Early Childhood Ministry. Come and wear your best Christmas pajamas. We will

be decorating and eating cookies, drinking milk, and reading some Christmas stories.

We will also have a photographer there to take some family pictures for $1.

January 4, 2015

On this Sunday, we will have a special Family Sunday in the Early Childhood

area. On this special day, parents are invited to stay with their children in the

Butterfly, Hedgehog, Raccoon, and Blue Bird Classes. Please come and experience a

Remember and Celebrate week as we, as families review the December lessons

learned. Please join us for either service. You are welcome to take your child with

you to attend service the other service time or even Saturday. Both class hours will

be identical on this week, so choose one to attend as a family and then your child

can be with you if you stay for the main service.

Aluminum Can Recycling

Shoemaker Circle is still collecting

cans in support of missions.

Collection tubs located in the South Building

Fellowship Hall.

2:13, “for it is God who works in you both

to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

My point to all this is that He is working in

me and I am grateful for what He is doing

in me through the Holy Spirit and putting

me here to break me.”

We serve about 9,000 inmates a year and we

get a supply of regular Bibles (always

needing more...) for the main population.

But, if there is an inmate that really has a

strong conversion and is super hungry for

the Word, then we try to follow up with a

study Bible. One thing that is kind of neat

is that the ones that have a stronger

understanding are really looked up to by

other inmates and they will hold their own

Bible studies on their own. So, that is why

it is soooooo special that we are able to get

study Bibles for the few that want to go

deeper.

House of Hope wishes a very Merry Christmas

to all of you and our deepest thanks for

supporting this much needed ministry.

In Christ’s love,

Pastor Michael and Margie Sgobba
