Attention Cowlitz County EntrepreneursWhat is Cowlitz BizNet?The idea for Cowlitz BizNet stemmed from the PubTalk events in Vancouver and Portland, wanting to have a similar format, but catering more to Cowlitz County entrepreneurs. The Cowlitz Economic Development Council has taken these events on, believing that entrepreneurship has become ever more vital in creating a stable and thriving economy.

Calling all Entrepreneurs, Investors and Business Professionals!Cowlitz BizNet events are aimed at bringing together entrepreneurs, investors and business professionals in hopes of beginning conversations. Unlike other events, Cowlitz BizNet targets entrepreneurs who are thinking of starting a business or already have a business and would like more networking/business development opportunities.

What can one expect at Cowlitz BizNet events? Each of the Cowlitz BizNet events are themed, with the intent of giving information through speakers specializing in the themed topics. The first Cowlitz BizNet event theme was “Market Yourself to Lenders” and the second was “Use Acquisitions to Accelerate Growth.” And, of course, you can also expect Networking! Networking! Networking! - Increasing the opportunity for entrepreneurs to connect with potential business partners and investors. Both events were very well attended and the feedback has given the Cowlitz Economic Development Council the momentum to continue forward in planning a third Cowlitz BizNet event this Fall, 2011.

The Future Looks Bright! There is the possibility of expanding Cowlitz BizNet into an entrepreneur accelerator program, putting entrepreneurs on the fast-track to starting a profitable, well managed business through mentors in all facets of business development.

How do we find out more? For more information, contact Mary Brown, Vice President at Cowlitz Economic Development Council, 360.423.9921. Follow us on Twitter:CowlitzBizNet or on Facebook: Cowlitz BizNet

Live United!

On September 14th local compa-nies and individuals will come together in

projects that help people and non-profit organizations within our community, dem-onstrating the entire scope of the local United Way mission of uniting people and resources. The Day of Caring is a key event of United Way’s annual campaign. Last year, the event brought together more than 200 volunteers from 39 local busi-nesses and organizations in support of many different projects. The day yields immediate satisfaction in tangible work accomplished, like building playgrounds, sorting food and clothing, doing yardwork and landscaping and making and serving meals. Often there is a deeper satisfac-tion, too.“It’s an especially meaningful time for employees of the plant,” said Mike Banigan, site manager at Sol-vay Chemical, which has taken part in United Way’s Day of Caring for many years. Lately, they’ve made their ongoing RIF (Reading Is Fundamen-tal) visits to Wallace School part of the company’s annual Day of Caring activities. “It’s not necessarily just an opportunity to read to the kids,” Bani-gan said, “but also . . . to spend some time with kids who sometimes just need to know that someone cares to listen.” Jim McLain, a salesman at Miller Paint in Longview, joined co-worker Wade Harmon and six other volun-teers last year to paint a house owned by a local non-profit, with Miller Paint

providing the paint and supplies and the volunteers doing the work.

“It seemed like a good way to give back to the community,” McLain recalled. And it was fun. “Everybody chat-ted and got along and got the work done.” Miller Paint’s group plans to paint another

house on this year’s Day of Caring, he said. Treana Storie, public relations assistant at Cowlitz PUD, has led its Day of Car-ing team for six years. “It’s always a very rewarding feeling,” she said. “We’re here doing something they (social service agencies) don’t have time to do. It allows them to focus on the people they’re try-ing to help.” And it’s a learning oppor-tunity, she said. “You get to go inside facilities and learn about what types of services they provide to our community.”Consider joining this year’s Day of Caring as an individual volunteer, a workplace-based team and/or an event sponsor. Whichever way you participate, you’ll have the unique chance to be seen as a community leader, while helping local citizens and organizations. To sign up and be “matched” to a project suited to your skills and interests, contact the United Way office at 1338 Commerce Avenue, Suite 201 in Longview, or call 360-423-5320.

NATIONALLY-KNOWN AUTHORITY WHO PRESENTED AT THE KELSO LONGVIEW

CHAMBER RELEASES BOOK ON SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING ESSENTIALS AND STRATEGIES

The Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce invited locally based social media authority Frank J. Kenny to come and speak on Social Media and Internet Marketing for small business in April 2010. Since that presentation, Mr. Kenny has presented or trained on social media marketing to more than 200 business associations and groups. His recently-released book is based on his research while visiting certain chambers, ours being one of them. The new book, titled The 7 Secrets: Laws of Society, Social Media Essentials and Strategies for Small Business and Associations, discusses Frank’s own experience of struggling in business until he discovered the strategy of “Give Gifts. Be Generous.” He combined that ancient strategy and new social media marketing strategies; resulting in a doubling of the size of his 45-year-old business organization over an 18-month period. The manuscript goes in-depth on what Frank calls “The 7 Secret Laws of Society.’ The laws include using social media to show your customers and prospects acceptance and respect; seeding for reciprocation; social proofing; being an expert and authority; knowing, liking, and trusting in business, and several other little-known human “laws”.The book, over the course of 170 pages, is available as a free digital download courtesy of the Kelso Longview Chamber and Frank’s national sponsor, ChamberMaster. He also covers telling your story, choosing the right niche and target market, knowing your businesses social media goals and how to measure progress, building your online brand, knowing the rules of the road, and 27 social media strategies for providing value and building relationships. As a gift, the Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to download the free digital version at FrankJKenny.com.

with the team on further enriching the community through the arts, education and community involvement, said Musso in a press release. “I am fortunate to join an organization that is truly a part of the fabric of our community.” Musso completed her bachelor’s degree in political science and course work for her master’s degree in public affairs at Washington State University. “This is a significant step for-ward for the Columbia Theatre,” noted Executive Director Gian Paul Morelli. “Our ability to con-nect with communities through-out Southwest Washington is critical to our success. Michelle is an important addition to our staff.” Westby and Associates of Vancouver, Washington, con-sulted on the search.

7WONDERS CREATION MUSEUM & BOOKSTOREThe 7Wonders Creation Museum, located at 4749 Spirit Lake Highway in Silver Lake, has announced special summer learning events (see details in ad on page 3.) Stewards and property owners Lloyd and Doris Anderson have developed the property and the Museum over the past 13 years with the help of volunteers and donors. They operate as a 501(c)(3) corporation under the legal business name, Mount St. Helens Cre-ation Information Center. The Museum spells out the geology of past ages through the “eyes” given the world by the eruptions of Mount St. Hel-ens, explained Doris Anderson. Poignant and artistically designed displays reveal how seven explosive events of the 1980s —which happened in minutes, hours, days or a few months — made way for useful canyons, riverbeds, new life and clues to the past in a short time. Although the Museum’s emphasis is MSH volcanism, Anderson said more than 200 book and DVD titles discuss how the interpretation of the age of the earth becomes important in all fields of science, including psychology, philoso-phy and religion. The 7Wonders Museum & Bookstore is open Mon-Sat, 9–6, and Sundays 12-6 during the tourist season, or by

appointment. Visit www.creationism.org/sthelens and click on “Newsletter #16” for directions and this season’s special events which include Northwest science experts discussing global warming, the Ice Age, dinosaurs, and the intricate inner workings of human cells.

LCC ART GALLERY TO FEATURE PAINTINGS BY LESLIE PETERSONPainter Leslie Peterson will exhibit her work June 27 through July 26 at the Art Gallery at Lower Columbia College. Peterson, a member of Gallery 114 in Portland, works mostly from photographs, using the photograph as inspiration for a distinct piece of art, rather than attempting to copy or emulate it.She writes: “My technique is based on pared-down simplicity. The images are simply and boldly drawn. I paint thinly, and I try to keep the drawing visible if possible. I work directly on wood panel. The colors are rich and yet subtle, based on a limited palette, working off of the color of the surface I work on.” Peterson characterizes her style as based on the American Regionalism, American Realism, and Modernist movements, with their sense of timelessness, and a tradition of depicting the human condition and civic life. For more information about Peter-son’s work visit lesliepetersonpaint-ing.com. The Art Gallery, located in LCC’s Rose Center for the Arts, 15th Avenue and Washington Way in Longview, is open this summer on Mondays, 10–4; Tuesdays, 1–4 and Wednesdays 10–6. More information about the gallery is at lowercolum-bia.edu/gallery.
