Hillyer First Fridays are always complimented by a special musicalelement, provided either by a DJ or live musician to enhance the ambience. FF is the best way to

end the week and the perfect pre-game to a weekend of adventure!

    EXHIBITION: Puzzling (a) Space

Hillyer Art Space and Project Andini are pleased to announce Puzzling (a) Space , a site-specificexhibition of painting, installation, video and performance by four contemporary Asian artists:Soun Hong (Korean), Chakraphan Rangaratna (Thai), Ding Ren (Chinese American), and Eric DeLeon Zamuco (Filipino). This exhibition is co-curated by Jeong-ok Jeon (Korean) and Jammie Chang(Taiwan), and as a collaborative project it will bring dynamic cultural perspectives to the Districtarts community and increase cultural exchange between Asia and the U.S.

Puzzling (a) Space begins with the concept of site-specific art, the notion that an artwork comes

to life within the exhibition space and an audience's participation is similarly an essentialcomponent to the artworks' realization. The place is not just a backdrop or a simple space tocontain the artwork. Rather, the place conveys the purpose and acts as a vehicle for the art, justas the audience's interaction acts as a catalyst. Thus the artwork will only be complete in thecontext of three contributing elements: the artist, the place, and the audience.

Action painting will be on display at CITY Gallery from Wednesday September 29 to

    Saturday October 30, 2010.

For Maria Margarita Panas, an abstract painting is not unlike a novel. The work

acquires a life of its own which unfolds as she allows the characters (color, line,

texture, perspective, mood) to develop a plot, create relationships, change, twist,

turn, until the painting reaches its natural conclusion. She insinuates a not-too-

apparent meaning in her work, wanting each viewer to grasp or suspect something

beneath the surface that lingers in his or her mind. When the work is finished, it

    should make a statement.

Panass genre definitely proceeds from the action painting of the abstract

expressionists of the 40s and 50s. The complexity, clarity and courage of this work

has always excited her. Action Painting has always been my forte. This series is

heavily influenced by the Gutai Group of Japanese artists. I was always heading in

the direction of unrestrained movement and color but seeing their work set me

free explains Panas. The visual language, applied spontaneously, usually requires

long periods of thought, observation and reworking to create a satisfactory image.

Therein lies the pleasure of painting: physical application and mental arrangement

of material on a canvas, both body and mind totally involved.

    About the Artist:

Maria Margarita Panas was born in Munich, Germany in 1946. She arrived in the

U.S.A. in 1949 and subsequently became a citizen. After living in Brooklyn, NY until

1960, she moved to Michigan, where she attended Wayne State University (1963-

1967) and met and married John Panas, a fellow student. They have two sons.

Margaret has been a practicing artist since 2002 and is a member of both The Art

League of Alexandria, VA and The Capitol Hill Art League of Washington DC. She is

also a member of the Columbia Pike Artist Studio.

Meet Artist Christopher M., "The Painter of Chefs"

  • 8/8/2019 bMichael Events This Week 1 October 2010

    18/53

Friday, October 1 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Dedication. Diligence. Passion. Such are the ingredients that have brought artist Christopher M.'sstriking chef renderings into the limelight among both fine art and culinary circles. Known as "ThePainter of Chefs," his expressive, celebratory paintings go beyond literal depiction to honor the mostprolific chefs of our time by painting them and preserving them historically on canvas.

Meet Artist Asencio Saturday, October 2 from 12:00-5:00 p.m. Contemporary painter Asencio has emerged as one of the most intriguing young artists working today.

Avant-garde in execution, his work blends the classical ideals of figurative painting with a unique, contemporary style revered in his art. "Abstract expressionism" or "abstract realism", Asencio's work cannot be pigeonholed by style or semantics. His open brushwork, sweeping color, use of texture andprecise drawing skills have resulted in a body of work that has earned him international accolades.

Meet Artist Michael Flohr Sunday, October 3 from 12:00-5:00 p.m.

His work is hot, hip and bursting with the energy of a night on the town. The improvisational painting style of Michael Flohr resonates between abstract composition and representational cityscape with anexcitement unique to contemporary artists today. Expressive of his own individualism, Flohr's styletranscends visual boundaries of reality while imposing personal narratives, thereby re-creating an urbanexperience that has resulted in collectors world-wide.

When encircled by the poetry of lines and tones occurringharmoniously in nature, Caroline Adams feel awed and small inthe enormous expanse. She see this space not only as location, but an inspired idea awaiting translation. The concept of beingpart of something larger compels the ideas and intentions in herwork. While the Greek landscape, the mid-Atlantic countrysideand, most recently, the mountainous, cloud-filled scapes of Ecuador are the inspiration for Adams' artwork, her hope is that the images themselves have become something more universal. Her landscapes are paintings and prints meant to give a degree of ambiguity that allows them to provoke a sense of familiarity andcalm without presenting a specific location. Adams is attempting to share her world and provide anunderstanding that these lines, shapes, and subtleties of tone bring her a sense of calm, peace, and awe.She does not wish to offer social discourse, but is rather simply trying to express beauty. Caroline Adams grew up in West Chester, Pennsylvania and received her BFA in Printmaking in 2001from the Rhode Island School of Design. From 2001-2003, she lived, studied, and taught Printmakingand Bookmaking at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts on the island Paros in Greece. She has shown ina number of galleries including the Artist's House Gallery in Philadelphia the Hard Castle Gallery inDelaware, the Shelburne Art Center in Vermont, the Yellow Springs Historical Society in Pennsylvania, and the Metaxa Gallery in Paros, Greece. Adams lived with her husband and two children inWashington, DC for six years prior to their recent move to Quito, Ecuador in February 2010.

The Bazaar culture is engraved in the Turkish way of life. The color, the variety, the noise, the crowd, the bargainingand all the chaos of the market place is an irreplaceable part of the Turkish culture. A leisurely afternoon spent exploring the bazaar, touching and feeling the items on display, bargaining for purchases and then sitting in one of the cafs with friends and having a cup of strong Turkish coffee or tea is very common among the Turks. Bazaars arethe most common stops to shop for important events such as the weddings, celebrations, and big family gatherings, but they are also useful for daily and random needs. For this reason, it is not surprising that one of the oldest andlargest indoors m arkets in the world is located in Istanbul. Istanbuls Grand Bazaar is a massive labyrinth of 4,000shops lining up the flanks of 58 covered streets and has between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. It is known forits jewelry, pottery, spices, and carpet shops. The bazaar contains two "bedestens" (domed masonry structures built

for storage and safe keeping), the first of which was constructed between 1455 and 1461 by the order of SultanMehmed the Conqueror.

Why is it that every time Republicans lose the presidency someone predicts the death of conservatism? After President Barack Obamas victory in 2008, a chorus of p undits heralded the demise of the Right. Yet,

each time conservative Republicans have been rejected by voters, conservatism has revived itself,

rethought its positions, and reorganized its political platform and profile. Are we on the cusp of such arebirth? A month before the November 2 midterm elections, the most anticipated and important in a

The United States needs a defense budget worthy of its name, and a strategy that protects Americansrather than wasting vast sums embroiling us in controversies remote from our interests. ChristopherPreble and Benjamin Friedman will discuss their new paper outlining the substantial cuts in militaryspending that a strategy of restraint allows. That strategy discourages the occupation of failing states

and indefinite commitments to defend healthy ones. With fewer missions the military can shrink itsforce structure reducing personnel, the weapons and vehicles procured for them, and operationalcosts without sacrificing security. Chairman Frank will discuss his recent efforts to gather bipartisansupport for military spending cuts and a reevaluation of our commitments to defend wealthy allies.

Germany, 2010, 60 min., DVD, Directors: Carl-Ludwig Paeschke, Uli Weidenbach

Discussion follows the screening with Stephen Szabo, Executive Director, Transatlantic Academy, and authorof The Diplomacy of German Unification (St Martins Press, 1992).

This documentary focuses on the 329 days between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 3rd of October, 1990. It

juxtaposes interviews with the most important figures in the political process from both Germanies and theformer Allied powers with accounts of everyday citizens who found themselves at least as surprised by the fallof the Wall as the politicians themselves.

The road to reunification was not a one-way street. A happy ending was not guaranteed. This film documentshow it came to be despite all the obstacles, and how people used the short time slot offered to them.

Carl-Ludwig Paeschke and Uli Weidenbach also co-directed a film about the fall of the Berlin Wall, Der schnste Irrtum der Geschichte Wie die Berliner Mauer wirklich fiel (2009).
