Snowshoe TrekkingSnowshoes enable anyone to walk on snow effortlessly, allowing for enjoyable snow hiking. You can follow the foot prints left by animals on the sparkling white surface, and thereafter enjoy tea or lunch break surrounded by snow capped mountains. Ski LessonsSki lessons are offered in many ski resorts in Japan. Even though the lessons are conducted in Japanese, children usually learn to ski in just half a day or so. ●●

Snowmobile / Snow rafting / AirboardingSnowmobiles, small two-seated snow vehicles, are available for rental. Various plans are on offer, ranging from five-minute trial rides to hour-long tours. Dash down trails while enjoying the won-derful natural view. Also available is Snow rafting, where a raft-ing board is pulled by a snowmobile: the feeling you get caused by centrifugal force when you make turns is very thrilling. Finally, air-boarding is an advanced form of sledding. You lie on an inflatable sled like it’s a body board and get to enjoy the sensation of speed. Since you lie on your belly, you have no fear of falling off to the ground like in skiing or snowboarding. You can learn to airboard simply by attending a half day or day-long training tour. ●●

DogsledDogsled is said to be the world’s most romantic yet toughest vehicle trans-port. Working as a unit with dogs and the exhilaration of gliding through the snow with the wind blowing in your face are the highlights of this ac-tivity. Each dogsled location offers different options, ranging from two dog to full-scale, seven to ten dog sleds. Donkoro Outdoor School (Minami-Furano Town, Hokkaido) welcomes you to try riding in the snow with their dogs. Dogsled tours may be postponed in the case of extreme weath-er conditions, animal health conditions or other circumstances. ●●

Snow Viewing BathThere are many hot springs throughout Japan. In heavy snowfall areas, you can enjoy snow viewing in open-air baths at many spa locations. In Matsukawa Onsen (Hachimantai City, Iwate Pref.), there are four onsen inns, each of which is equipped with unique open-air baths. After enjoying skiing at nearby ski areas, warm yourself in an open-air bath and have some sake while snow-view-ing. Of course, you can just drop in for a bath as well. Snow ActivitiesNovices, children and advanced skiers can all enjoy winter sports in Tomamu, famous for its powder snow. There are a variety of snow activities including snowshoeing, snowmobil-ing, banana boarding, sleighing, and snow picnics on site. The Adventure Mountain is one such family ski zone where you clear obstacles following a story, just like in a role-playing game. There are two levels offered so that players can enjoy themselves regardless of their skiing ability. The ski resort also offers ski lessons for all levels.

As for accommodation, Family Forth rooms in The Tower are popular among guests. These spacious rooms have four low-level beds. There are also many other types of rooms available.

Try the set menus at “Crab and Seafood Dining, Hokkaido Sea Market” for dinner. There is also a food court with many choices of local delicacies such as a buffet style eatery, ramen parlor, soup curry restaurant and conveyer belt sushi. Here, you can find the food to suit your mood.

Inside Morning Practice at a Sumo Beya

Greg from N.Y. will report on various experiences in Japan. In the first episode, he gets to watch sumo morning practice and eat chanko. We got to go inside Hakkaku Beya, right next to Ryogoku

Kokugikan, the holy ground of sumo. What did Greg think of the sumo world up close?

Go Go Greg! vol.1

We got to Hakkaku Beya (heya, which means stable, is pronounced beya in this case) around 8:00 in the morning. When we walked into the training room,

the rikishis, or sumo wrestlers, were training on practice dirt. They looked like they’d been at it for a while already. We got to watch practice for an hour, basically the wrestlers running practice matches one at a time, with the others watching or practic-ing moves on the side. Everybody was pretty much quiet the whole time, but no one looked relaxed. One of the wrestlers got thrown right off his feet, and got up with dirt on his back. Everybody was hitting hard, and I couldn’t tell if they were going full-strength but it sure looked that way to me.

When practice was over, I thought the rikishis might be tired, but after a shower they all looked fresh again. By the time we walked over to the meal room, most of them were standing there while the others were getting our food ready for us. We got to eat chanko nabe, which is the classic hot pot sumo wrestlers eat to put on weight.

Page 15: att.JAPAN Issue 66

att. JAPAN 15

The heya manager, Hasegawa-san, told us the rikishis make the chanko themselves and change up the flavor every day. That day was salmon nabe, with the fish straight from Hokkaido. Hakkaku Beya’s Oyakata (master), Hokutoumi, is from Hokkaido, and a lot of the rikishis who train here come from the north, so they have the connections to get food sent straight to them. The rikishis served us chanko and gave us refills whenever we got close to finishing our bowl. I was pretty full after just one, to be honest, but I ended up eating two whole ones.

Hasegawa-san talked to us about different aspects of how things work in the heya. Most of the rikishis in the room were low or middle rank level. Some of them had their hair tied up in a knot and some didn’t have it long enough to do it yet. Rikishis usually wear kimono when they’re outside the heya, and Hasegawa-san told us if you don’t get to a certain rank, you can’t wear anything over it in the winter time. I wonder if the fat keeps them warm, because winters in Tokyo get pretty cold.

The manager introduced us to all of the wrestlers in the room, told us about where they came from and what they were like. We heard about the tallest rikishi in the room, who according to Hasegawa-san, was definitely going to be a yokozuna (highest rank) if he put on another 20 kilos. Putting on weight is hard though, and there’s no guarantee he can do it. Another wrestler had a special mental condition but had an upfront personality, and Hasegawa-san said if he won some bouts he was going to be on TV all the time.

The manager told us some old-time stories too, like about how wrestlers used to drink all night after dinner and go straight to morn-ing practice. This doesn't happen so much anymore, apparently.

When we finished eating up we were shown out the door and were on our way. To be honest, I didn’t really want to leave. The sumo lifestyle seemed like so much fun once I got a closer look at it that I was hoping they might take me in, or at least let me stay for a week. I’ll have to start eating more though or the closest I’ll get to them again is probably on tournament day!

Clipping DataProfessional sumo wrestling is managed by the Nihon Sumo Kyokai

(Japan Sumo Association). Basho, the official tournaments which deter-

mine rank and salary, are held six times a year, each lasting 15 days, for

a total of 90 days of official competition a year. Basho are held in Tokyo

in January, May and September at the Ryogoku Kokugikan, in March in

Osaka at the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium (BODYMAKER COLOSSEUM),

in July in Nagoya at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, and in November

in Fukuoka at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center. Regional exhibition tours are

held on occasion as well.

Sumo beyas each have their own rules and particularities. Observing

morning training is not allowed at all beyas. For more details, get in touch

with the Japan Sumo Association. Travel agencies such as JTB occasion-

ally organize tours to observe training and/or eat chanko hot pot, so be

on the lookout for these announcements!

Okazu Yokocho is a shopping arcade in a very quiet part of Taito-ku, in a former industrial area that used to be bustling in the Showa era (1926-1989) but which has now turned into a quiet town as a lot of the handcraft work that was done here has gone unwanted in the modern age. The neighborhood still has some old drinking spots and specialty shops run by local owners, and Okazu Yokocho is a street where these businesses concentrate. Okazu means “side-dish,” something that you’d serve with rice, and the street was popular when workers with no time to cook came here to buy food for their families. These days, most of such shops on the street have closed down, but a few side-dish shops are still in business here, keeping alive the tradition.

You can occasionally also spot some rarities you’d have a hard time finding elsewhere in town. Here, under a storefront for a milk company few young Japanese people have prob-ably ever heard of, is a milk-themed drink vending machine. It sells several different milk drinks, most of them made by MEGMILK, a company whose products you can actually find in supermarkets.

Located in Nagano Prefecture in the Honshu mainland of Japan, Shibu Onsen is a hot spring resort with a 1,300

year history. Cobblestone lanes are surrounded by traditional wooden ryokan (Japanese inns), a quaint setting attractive to many visitors. You will feel the atmosphere of a Japanese onsen village while strolling on these streets in your yukata (light cotton kimono) and geta (clogs). There are many inns equipped with their own spring sources and distinctive baths in Shibu, where hot spring water flows out in abundance. Wi-Fi is also free for guests to use at all the ryokan in the town area.

Shibu Onsen has nine public bath houses used by local citizens on a daily basis. You can try out each one, all of which have different wa-ter sources and medical effects. It is traditionally said that good fortune, such as protection from evil, safe child delivery and upraising as well as perpetual youth and longevity, comes to those who do the entire bath house tour by visiting all nine. Footbaths are also recommended for those lacking in time. There are two footbaths in the town: Nofutomaru and Kyusoku-dokoro Shingen.

Jigokudani Yaen-koen (Monkey Park), fa-

mous for wild snow monkeys bathing in its hot springs, is about 2.5 km away from Shibu Onsen. The monkeys in the park are onsen lovers and like to bathe in any season. You can easily access the park all year round as there are buses running in winter when the streets are deeply covered by snow and the footing is poor. A 30-minute drive will take you to Shiga Highlands, located in the center of Joshinetsu National Park. You can enjoy trekking and hiking in summer here and skiing in winter. The snow resort area is also known as one of the sites of the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano.

Temaki-zushi (Hand-rolled Sushi)Ingredients (serves 4)Sushi Rice:4 cups rice (or, as much as you like!)2 tbsp sugar1 tsp salt1/2 cup rice vinegar

Toppings:200 g each sashimi of choice (tuna, shrimp, etc.), preferably in

small blocks1 cucumber200 g smoked salmon1 avocado

20 sheets nori seaweed (20 cm x 10 cm)wasabi, as needed (best if freshly grated)soy sauce, as needed

Cooking directions:Preparation of Sushi RiceCook the rice, mix the sushi vinegar into the hot rice and cool it down to room temperature.

Cutting the IngredientsCut off the ends of the cucumber, cut it diagonally into 2-mm thick slices, and cut them into pieces 2 mm in width.Cut the avocado lengthwise around the pit. With both hands, pull the two halves apart gently. The pit can be removed by carefully tapping it with a knife so the blade is wedged in and then twisting. Peel the avocado halves and cut them into 5-cm sticks. Cut the sashimi, such as tuna and roasted ham/smoked salmon into blocks (5 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm). If you are using sliced sashimi and smoked salmon, use as is.

Wrap with NoriCut the nori sheet in half crosswise with scissors or by hand. Do this just before eating to prevent the nori from becoming soggy.

Make sure your hands are dry and place the nori with the back side up on a plate. Spread 20-30 g of sushi rice along the center of the nori. With your finger, smear a line of wasabi on the center of the rice.Add some avocado sticks for color and other toppings of choice on the wasabi. Make sure your hands are dry before rolling up the nori around the filling. Dip into soy sauce and eat!

Tips• Choose toppings you like and use as many as you like.• The front of a sheet of nori is smooth, while the back is rough.• Tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet) and various kinds of sashimi, such as tuna, shrimp, minced aji (horse mackerel), negitoro (fatty tuna minced with leek),

octopus, squid, and scallop, are all good for hand-rolled sushi.• Try some other unique ingredients, such as a mixture of umeboshi (pickled plum) and shredded dried bonito, shredded takuan (pickled daikon) with

sesame seeds, and grilled anago (salt-water eel).• Western food ingredients, such as dry-cured ham, cream cheese, finely chopped celery, also go well in hand-rolled sushi.• Instead of avocado, you can use shiso leaves and daikon sprouts with sashimi, and rocket salad (rucola) with ham, salmon, and cucumber.• Wrapping in red leaf lettuce instead of nori makes the dish more refreshing.• Don’t overload with the sushi rice in order to make a nice and tidy roll.

Rail 鐵路Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

Bus 巴士 Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than travel-ing by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night.Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recom-mend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disem-bark prior to setting off.

The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi.

In big cities, such as Tokyo and Osaka, the under and over ground train system is well organized and highly efficient accessing any and all parts of the cities. To avoid wasting time lining up for tickets and working out how to use the machines in different stations, it is highly recommended to purchase pre-paid cards.

If planning to stay in Japan for a longer period why not try us-ing IC cards? (500 yen deposit returned when returning the card) Simply touch the card on a rectangular pad beside the ticket gate and the fare used is automatically deducted from the value of the card. In Tokyo the cards are known as Suica or PASMO and are ac-cepted on JR lines, subways and most other railways and buses.

Tokyo Furii Kippu (東京フリーきっぷ) (www.jreast.co.jp/e/pass/) is available for use on JR lines (inside Tokyo’s 23 wards), subways, and the Toei Bus service for one whole day – ending at midnight – at a charge of 1,580 yen.JR Kanto Area Pass (www.jreast.co.jp/e/kantoareapass/) is a discounted pass for unlimited rides in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto area. Valid for three days, the pass is good for unlimited rides using reserved seats on ordinary cars on Shinkansen (bullet trains), limited express and other trains. Prices are 8,000 yen (Adults), and 4,000 yen (Children).

JR Kanto Area Pass(JR 關東地區通票) (www.jreast.co.jp/tc/

In the Kansai (Osaka) area ICOCA or PiTaPa is available IC cards similar to Suica / PASMO.Kansai Area Pass (www.jr-odekake.net/en/jwrp/) is valid for unlimited travel using ordinary non-reserved seats of JR-WEST local and rapid trains in the defined "Free Area." Prices are 2,000 yen (1-day), 4,000 yen (2-days), 5,000 yen (3-days), and 6,000 yen (4-days).Kansai Thru Pass (スルッと関西) (www.surutto.com) offers a similar service to the Tokyo Furii Kippu in Kansai and enables subway, railway (bar JR lines), and bus use throughout the Kansai area. Price - 3,800 yen for 2 days or 5,000 yen for 3 days.

Suica/

KANSAI THRU PASS (www.surutto.com)

You can cash traveler’s checks at many banks. Traveler’s checks can also be used at hotels, ryokan Japanese style ho-tels, and shops in big cities. Credit cards can be widely used in urban areas, but sometimes are not accepted at shops in rural areas.

Public telephones can be found almost everywhere in Japan and most can be used to make domestic and international calls. Only 10 or 100 yen coins can be used but all telephones take pre-paid telephone cards – purchase in convenience stores for 500 or 1000 yen.If you use a calling card when you make an international call, it can reduce your calling rate.
