Gunma Prefecture, located almost at the center of the Japanese archipelago, is an inland prefecture with 2,000-meter

high mountains in the western and northern parts and the Kanto Plain in the southeast. This nature-blessed land with more than 100 hot springs and vast marshlands is known as a mec-ca for outdoor enthusiasts. Gunma is roughly divided into five areas.

The Agatsuma Area—The Agatsuma area is in the northwestern part of the prefecture and blessed with nature, hot springs, valleys, and ski resorts.

Kusatsu Onsen is a famous hot spring with the largest amount of natural hot water in Japan. In the center of the town is Yubatake, the larg-est hot spring supplying Kusatsu Onsen, with cascading gushes of spring water of as much as 4,000 liters per minute. This dynamic, over-whelming display is a must see.

Netsu-no-Yu is a facility where you can experience yumomi, the traditional process of lowering the temperature of the hot water by

出4000公升的溫泉水，傾洩而下宛如瀑布，其姿態豪

爽而壯觀，不容錯過。

stirring it with wooden blades about 1.8 meters long so as not to lose the good benefits of the hot spring water of Kusatsu Onsen by diluting it with cold water.

The water of Kusatsu Onsen is highly acidic and is said to melt a one-yen coin in one week and a big nail in ten days. The water is very ben-eficial; the only disease it cannot cure is said to be lovesickness. There are many day-trip bathing facilities and public baths. Don’t forget to try on-sen manju (Japanese steamed cake with a sweet red bean paste filling) and onsen tamago (eggs slowly cooked in hot springs to the point where the whites are still soft but the yolks are slightly hardened) with a custard cream-like texture.

Yugama is a crater lake located at the top of Mt. Shirane about 30 minutes from Kusatsu Onsen by bus. The strongly acidic lake (pH 1.2) is a beautiful emerald green seen against the backdrop of the stark landscape. The mountains are dotted with ski slopes, so this area is also a good place for winter sports.

To the east of Kusatsu Onsen is Shima Onsen, surrounded by mountains. Yamaguchi

Rotenburo (open-air bath) along the river is a free public bath open to anyone. The water of Shima Onsen is good for drinking and is be-lieved to cure stomach and intestinal problems. At various locations in the town, you can find places to drink the hot spring water. Don’t drink too much at first. Try a bit and see how you feel. Dishes made with the freshwater fish from the Shima River are a must. There are many different types of hotels in this area, from traditional ryokan (Japanese-style hotels) to modern hotels.

The Tone/Numata Area—This area provides the beautiful scenery of the valley of the Tone River winding through hot spring villages, outdoor activities in the mountain streams, and the opportunity to hike through one of Japan’s largest marshlands.

Minakami Onsen, located along the Tone River, is famous for its beautiful valley setting. You can relax there in the midst of abundant nature overlooking Mt. Tanigawa-dake. Located east of Minakami Onsen is Takaragawa Onsen

with a large open-air bath that is popular. In sum-mer, you can enjoy rafting and canyoning (US: canyoneering) down the valley streams. You may want to try catching trout by hand and picking fruit, or decide to participate in any small local festival you come across. The many winter activi-ties including skiing and snowy nature tours are sure to be fun.

Takumi-no-Sato is a village offering a vari-ety of hands-on activities. You can learn wood-work, bamboo work, indigo dyeing, and straw work from expert artisans at the craft studios. Because the village is large, renting a bike is a good idea.

Oze, the most renowned marshland in Japan, is a popular destination for trekkers. The colonies of white arum and daylilies are breath-taking in early summer, and the beautiful red autumn leaves are splendid in fall. Hatomachi Pass, the starting point for trekking, can be ac-cessed from Numata Station on the JR Joetsu Line. Make sure to prepare for a real mountain hike: wear shoes suitable for climbing and hik-ing, bring rain gear, and so on.

泉方法之一「湯揉」。所謂「湯揉」，是為了不破壞溫泉

原有的效果，不加冷水稀釋，而用長達1.8公尺的木板

攪拌溫泉源泉水使之降溫的作業。您也可以親身體驗

「湯揉」的樂趣唷！

草津溫泉的溫泉為強酸泉，能在一個禮拜內讓一枚

一元日幣溶化，大釘子也只需十天左右，可見其酸性之

強，據說這麼強的殺菌力除了相思病以外無不藥到病

除。草津溫泉擁有不少提供可純泡溫泉的設施和公共

浴池，而溫泉饅頭和口感軟潤的溫泉蛋也值得一試。

湯釜是位於白根山頂的火口湖，從草津的溫泉街搭

巴士三十分鐘左右可到，這個強酸湖PH值高達1.2，

湖水呈現輝煌的祖母綠，與週遭荒涼的氣氛成了強烈

的對比。周遭山邊也有數所滑雪場，可以享受冬季運

動的樂趣。

位於草津溫泉東邊的是四萬溫泉，是位於山間、自然

風景優美的溫泉名勝。坐落在河邊的山口露天溫泉浴

池免費開放，是能享受野外風情的公共浴場。此外四萬

溫泉的溫泉水可以生飲，據說可治療腸胃病。在溫泉街

上的許多地方都有飲泉處，如果身體情況還不錯的話，

就來挑戰一下喝溫泉吧！使用在四萬川釣到的淡水魚

所烹調的料理也讓人食指大動。在四萬溫泉，從老牌旅

館到現代化的飯店應有盡有，種類豐富。

利根沼田地區

——本地區觀光資源豐富，除能欣賞宛若串連群馬縣各個溫

泉名勝的利根川的溪谷之美以及利用其溪流來進行的戶外

活動外，也可在日本屈指可數的大型溼地上進行健行活動。

水上溫泉位於利根川河畔，是能飽覽溪谷之美的溫

泉名勝。在能一望谷川岳的美麗自然環境之中，讓您可

以好好悠閒地度個假。位於水上溫泉東邊的寶川溫泉

也因有大型露天浴池而相當受歡迎。

夏天時可進行泛舟、溪降運動。而抓鱒魚、摘水果

或是臨時起意去參加當地的祭典等也很有趣。冬天則

可以進行滑雪、雪上自然探訪之旅等各式各樣的雪上

活動。

而匠之里則是擁有木工、竹編、藍染、草編等許多工作

坊林立形成一座大型體驗型設施。對哪種工藝感興趣便

可以接受該項工藝的師傅親自傳授，機會難得喔！而由

於匠之里佔地廣大，建議租台腳踏車移動會方便很多。

此外，日本代表性的大型溼地尾瀨是相當受歡迎的

健行熱門地點。夏初有水芭蕉和日光黃菅花群落盛開，

而秋天則有美麗的紅葉賞心悅目。健行的起點為鳩待

嶺，可以從JR上越線的沼田站搭巴士前往。由於當地位

於山岳地帶，如要前往最好準備適合登山或是健行用

的鞋子或雨具等裝備。

The West Area—This area includes many interesting places to visit in-cluding Takasaki City, one of the largest com-mercial cities in Gunma, and Tomioka Silk Mill, Japan’s first mechanical silk mill.

Takasaki City is the local traffic hub and has a bullet train station. The population is 370,000 and is the largest city in Gunma Prefecture. The Byakue-daikannon (a large statue of the Kannon Goddess in a white robe), 41.8 me-ters high, is located about 20 minutes from Takasaki Station and has been a beloved sym-bol of Takasaki since its foundation in 1936. The inside of the statue is nine stories high, and, from the top floor is a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.

Takasaki also has the largest production of papier-mâché daruma (Japanese dolls modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism), usually colored vivid red and in a cute round shape. Shorinzan Daruma-ji Temple is the origin of these good luck daruma. The Daruma-ichi (daruma market) is held on January 6 and 7 every year, and the more than 100 stalls selling daruma attract many people. It is about 20 minutes by bus from Takasaki Station to the

temple. Daruma can be purchased throughout the year at Daimon-ya

across the Usui River from the temple. This shop is popular because you can

draw the eyes and/or a mustache on a daruma to make an original face. If you are at Takasaki Station, try the popular Daruma Bento ekiben (box lunches sold at stations).

Tomioka Silk Mill in Tomioka City, the first government-run industrial silk mill, was estab-lished in 1872 by the government aiming to modernize the country. In those days, it was one of the largest silk mills in the world. After closing down in 1987, it was designated a national his-toric site, an important asset with original ware-houses and silk reeling factory. Furthermore, it was inscribed on Japan’s World Heritage Tentative List in 2007. When you step into the silk reeling factory, you will be amazed by the huge area without supporting pillars for the silk reeling mill that was operated by 300 workers.

The Central Area—The area including Maebashi, the prefectural capital city, is home to a variety of distinguished lo-cal foods. Ikaho Onsen in the western part is a nos-talgic hot spring resort, famous for its stone steps.

Maebashi is located at the foot of Mt. Akagi and is blessed with the beautiful waters of the Tone and Hirose rivers. If you have time, visit the 153-meter-tall prefectural building, the tall-est prefectural government building in Japan excluding the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Tower. It offers great views of the mountains from the free observatory on the 32nd floor. Some of the largest pork shipments in Japan come from Maebashi and it is known for tasty pork. Many restaurants in the city serve a vari-ety of pork dishes, including pork shabu shabu (thinly sliced pork submerged in boiling water for a few seconds, then dipped in a sauce), pork soup, and horumon (pork giblets). You must try sosu katsudon (pork cutlet on rice topped with Worcestershire-like sauce), said to have originat-ed in Gunma. The tender pork and crispy batter with sauce-soaked rice is yummy!

The dome northwest of Maebashi Station is the Green Dome Maebashi, Japan’s first all-weather indoor track for keirin, track cycling races originating in Japan. Enjoy the unique atmosphere heavy with the excitement of fast racers and the excited audience.

西部地區

——在此區有代表群馬縣的商業都市高崎以及日本第一間

機械製絲廠─富岡製絲廠等，盡是旅遊好去處。

高崎為新幹線停靠站，是交通重鎮，人口37萬人，也

是群馬縣內人口最多的都市。從高崎站搭巴士約20分

鐘左右處有一高達41.8公尺的觀音像，為白衣大觀音，

自1936年建立以來便成了高崎的象徵，觀音內部又分

為九個樓層，最上層可以俯瞰周遭的山巒風光。

高崎同時也是外表為鮮紅色、樣貌可愛討喜的紙漿

工藝吉祥物「達磨不倒翁」著名生產地，產量全日本第

一。而少林山達磨寺則是紙漿工藝不倒翁的起源地。每

年1月的6、7日會舉辦販賣不倒翁的不倒翁市集，會有

一百多間的不倒翁攤一齊開賣，屆時遊客如織，相當熱

鬧，從高崎站搭巴士前往約20分鐘左右。而從達磨寺

越過碓冰川的另一頭的「大門屋」則是讓您一年四季都

可以買到不倒翁，而且還可以親自手繪不倒翁的眼睛和

鬍子，生意相當興隆。在高崎站也別忘了嘗嘗人氣鐵路

便當、達磨不倒翁便當唷！

而位於富岡市的富岡製絲廠是1872年時，當時的政

府為了推動日本近代化，在富岡設置了第一所官營機械

製絲廠，也是當時世界上屈指可數的製絲廠之一。在

1987年結束運作後，當時使用的倉庫和繅絲廠作為貴

重的遺產被保存下來，後獲指定為國家史跡，並在2007

年登錄在日本的世界遺產暫定名單中。當您進入繅絲

廠的建築物內部後，會發現中央沒有樑柱，並訝異其空

間之寬廣。創業之時可是有接近三百台人工操作的繅

絲機，可見往昔盛況。

縣央地區

——以縣廳所在地「前橋」為中心的本區，有不少富有特色的當

地美食。而西邊則是有著石階街道、古色古香的伊香保溫泉。

前橋位於赤城山的中部，有利根川、廣瀨川等清流流

經，深受其惠。如果有時間，不

妨到這高達153公尺，為日本最

高的縣廳大樓看看吧！在位於

32樓的免費展望室，您可以一覽周圍

的山巒風光。而豬肉出貨量為全國數一數二的前橋這幾

年也成為著名的豬肉料理之都。在前橋市的料理店裡，

您可以吃到豬肉涮涮鍋、豬肉味增湯、豬內臟等各式各

樣的豬肉料理，更別忘了來嘗一下據說是群馬縣首創的

「淋醬豬排蓋飯」唷！柔軟的豬肉、口感酥脆的外皮配

上滲入醬汁的白飯，絕對讓您讚不絕口！

位於前橋站的西北方的巨蛋，是前橋綠色巨蛋

（Green Dome前橋），為日本第一間全天候型屋內競輪

場，發源於日本的自行車比賽「競輪」會在此舉行。在

此地，您可以感受到參賽者和觀眾的熱血沸騰，是相當

特別的體驗。

Haruna , is one of the four major hot spring resorts in the prefecture along with Kusatsu, Minakami, and Shima. The stone stairway at the center of the town is a symbol of Ikaho and game halls and souvenir shops line both sides. Kogane-no-Yu is one of the water sources for Ikaho and is said to have been one since the 6th century. The water is originally transparent but turns brownish-red on contact with the air because the water contains a large amount of iron. The bath of the municipal Ikaho Onsen Rotenburo (open-air bath) is filled with the pure hot spring water, naturally heated and no water added. Ikaho’s must-try food is the brownish-red onsen manju, cakes with bean paste similar in color to Kogane-no-Yu. Now, a variety of on-sen manju are sold at hot spring resorts all over Japan but Ikaho’s was the first of its kind.

Mizusawa udon (wheat noodles) is a spe-cialty of Mizusawa, a town near Ikaho. It is known as one of the three best udon in Japan, along with Sanuki udon of Kagawa Prefecture and Inaniwa udon of Akita Prefecture. The thick noodles with nice, firm texture pleasant-ly slip down the throat. There are more than ten udon restaurants in this area alone. Don’t miss this taste treat!

Kiryu is a town famous for textiles, indi-cated by the ancient saying “Nishijin (Kyoto) in the West and Kiryu in the East.” The town has many factories with saw-tooth roofs and Western-style houses, which show the town prospered by the fabric industry. Rental bikes are free at some facilities around the north exit of JR Kiryu Station. Ride around and see the interesting architecture.

Watarase Keikoku railway is a private rail-way running 44.1 kilometers from Kiryu Station to Mato Station in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. The train goes through the beauti-ful valley along the Watarase River. Early sum-mer with the beautiful bright green leaves and fall with the brilliant autumn leaves are par-ticularly recommended. Special torokko trains (tour trains with open carriages) run on week-ends and peak tourist seasons.

The region including Ota and Oizumi, lo-cated south of Kiryu, has many factories for Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., known for pro-ducing Subaru vehicles. Many engineers from various nations live around the factories, and

restaurants and supermarkets serve and sell international foods and other products. You may find something you cannot find anywhere else in Japan. Ota’s specialty is yakisoba (wheat noodles stir fried with vegetables and flavored with a Worcestershire-like sauce). Unlike regu-lar yakisoba dishes, Ota’s yakisoba noodles are thick, cooked with cabbage only and flavored with a thick original sauce.

Tatebayashi, located east of Ota, is home to Tsutsujigaoka Park known for its beauti-ful azaleas. The gorgeous blossoms of more than 50 kinds of azaleas can be seen from late April to early May. Among the unique aza-leas, there are large azalea trees 800 to 1,000 years old, and “space azaleas” from seeds that travelled in space for two weeks in the space shuttle Columbia (launched in 1994) with Ms. Chiaki Mukai, the Japanese astronaut from Tatebayashi City.

津、水上、四萬並稱群馬四大溫泉。溫泉街中心的石階

為伊香保溫泉的地標。兩旁則有不少遊樂場和名產店。

為伊香保溫泉源頭之一的黃金之湯歷史悠久，據說西元

六世紀時便已湧出，顏色為茶褐色。原本溫泉水的顏色

是無色透明的，但由於水中含有豐富的鐵質，接觸空氣

之後產生氧化，遂變為茶褐色。市營的伊香保溫泉露天

浴池則為純天然溫泉水，未經任何溫度調整或加水稀

釋，效果百分百。

在伊香保更別忘了一定要嘗嘗這個茶褐色的溫泉饅

頭，外皮的顏色是取自照黃金之湯的顏色。而這裡的溫

泉饅頭可是日本溫泉饅頭的始祖喔！

而水澤地區的名產是水澤烏龍麵，與香川縣的讚岐

烏龍麵、秋田縣的稻庭烏龍麵並列日本三大烏龍麵。麵

條粗又有嚼勁，口感絕佳。水澤地區有十幾間烏龍麵專

賣店，距離伊香保溫泉也不遠，別忘了順道去吃一下出

名的水澤烏龍麵喔！

東部地區

——溫暖的氣候以及盛開的種種花卉將迎接您的到來。

人稱「西有西陣（京都），東有桐生」，桐生自古以

來即是著名的紡織之鎮。走在路上，您可以看到許多

代表往昔風光的鋸齒狀屋頂的工廠和洋房被保存得

相當良好。從JR桐生站北口有幾個可以免費租借腳踏

車的設施，不妨試試騎車兜風繞遍這些美麗的西式

建築吧。

從桐生站到栃木縣日光市的間藤站間，長達44.1公里

的私營鐵路是渡良瀨溪谷鐵道，這是可以欣賞渡良瀨

川溪谷之美的鐵路之旅。初夏的嫩綠和秋天的紅葉時

期是最適合搭車旅遊的時機，週末或旺季時則有觀光

小火車行駛。

位於桐生南邊，以太田‧大泉為中心的區域有以製

造Subaru汽車出名的富士重工的工廠集中。在工廠附

花之岡公園，從四月下旬到五月上旬之間，有五十種

以上的杜鵑花盛開。還有樹齡高達八百歲、甚至一千

歲的巨大杜鵑花樹，以及在1994年發射的太空梭

「哥倫比亞號」內，和館林市人的太空人向井千秋一

起到宇宙進行兩個禮拜之旅的種子發芽長成的「宇

宙杜鵑花」等較為珍貴的品種。

Get off at Keikyu Heiwajima Station and go to east. After a 15-minute walk, you will reach Omori Furusato no Hamabe Park (Beach Side Park) with its lovely white sand beach. In the past, the cultivation of nori (seaweed), which is dried and used for nori-maki or sushi wrapped in laver, prospered in this area. There are large parks and other entertain-ment facilities stretching along the vast shores of the bay. Heiwajima Natural Hot Spring spa is located in Big Fun Heiwajima. About 150 tons of water a day springs from the 2,000-meter underground spring. Big Fun Heiwajima is also home to cinema theaters and the well-known discount store Don Quijote. Oi Horse Race Track was built in 1950 and is the only LOCAL horse race track in Tokyo. It has a nostalgic, retro atmosphere and attracts many couples, young women and families. Head for Keikyu Tachiaigawa Station. The road parallel to the Daiichi Keihin Route is the old Tokaido Road. Japan’s first beer was made around here. The area around Samezu Station has a retro feel with its old shops and buildings and walking along the Katsushima Canal is enjoyable. Movie director Akira Kurosawa was born nearby.

Around Aomono-yokocho Station, there are venerable temples such as Honsen-ji Temple, famous for a large jizo statue that is one of the six famous jizo statues of Edo (now Tokyo), and

Kaiun-ji Temple. If you turn east, you will reach Shinagawa Seaside Station on the Rinkai Line. The extensive Aeon supermarket is near the sta-tion. If you turn west from Aomono-yokocho and go up the slope, you will arrive at Oimachi Station, terminal for JR, Tokyu and Rinkai Railways. Shopping malls are all around the sta-tion and large shops such as Ito Yokado super-market, Labi electric appliance store, Atre de-partment store, and Hankyu Oimachi Garden shopping complex.

在青物橫丁站附近有江戶六地藏的品川寺、海雲寺等

古剎林立。往東邊走的話，就會到臨海線品川Seaside

上西邊的坡道就可到大井町站，是連結了JR、東急、臨

Ebara Shrine is famous for its dynamic Tennosai festival and Shinagawa Shrine is famous for its annual festival in which large portable shrines are paraded through the town and for its Fuji-zuka, a miniature version of Mt. Fuji.Shinagawa Historical Museum: Culture and his-tory of Shinagawa City.Omori Shell Mounds: Edward Morse, an American zoologist, discovered a shell mound when look-ing out the window of the train he was riding from Omori to Shinagawa in 1877. 舊東海道從京濱急行北品川站到青物橫丁站這段區

Shizuoka Prefecture is located in the cen-ter of the Japanese archipelago. Japan’s highest mountain, Mt. Fuji. is situated

in this Shizuoka Prefecture. Also, the prefec-ture abounds in attractive natural scenic spots. Shizuoka Prefecture comprises four areas; east-ern, central, western, and Izu. Starting with this issue, we will feature each area’s attractions over the course of four issues.

Atami, the Entrance to the East Izu AreaAtami City has long been one of the most fa-mous hot spring resorts, with a lot of hotels and inns along the streets. At Atami Plum Blossom Park, some of the 730 plum trees in the park start to bloom as early as December, and blos-soms can be enjoyed through March. The MOA Museum is located on a hill that commands a panoramic view of Sagami Bay. The museum houses approximately 3,500 pieces of Oriental art works, which include three Japanese national treasures. Kiunkaku is a traditional Japanese mansion built in 1919, which was once used as a hotel. Many famous literary figures loved to stay there. The garden of Kiunkaku mansion is beautiful in lush greenery.

Ito, One of the Best Hot Springs in the Izu PeninsulaIto City has long been visited by many writers and poets, so stone monuments inscribed with those artists’ famous words and lyrics are found in the city. The main streets of Ito are Yunohana Street and Kinema Street, where a lot of restau-rants and souvenir shops are along the street. Many shops selling dried fish are found along Kaigan (“Seaside”) Street. Walking along the Matsukawa River will take you to an old build-ing, Tokaikan. This former hotel operated from 1928 to 1997. The old Japanese hotel building has an impressive observatory tower. At pres-ent, the hotel is closed, but the hot spring bath house in the building is open to day trippers. Nagisa Park commands a view of Hatsu-shima Island, Manazuru Peninsula, and in the dis-tance, Miura Peninsula. Camellias and azaleas are very beautiful in Komuroyama Park.

Izu Kogen, Highlands Redolent With a Scent of ArtLake Ippeki is a small lake created by volcanic activity with a circumference of 4 km. It only takes an hour to walk around the lake. You can enjoy birds singing, cherry blossoms in spring,

and autumn leaves. You can find a conspicuous-ly shaped grass mountain, Mt. Omuro. It looks like an upside down rice bowl. Take the lift to the top, and weather permitting, you can com-mand a view of Mt. Fuji, the Amagi Mountains, and the Izu Islands. Izu Shaboten Koen, (Cactus Park) is situated at the foot of Mt. Omuro. In addition to this, there are more tourist attrac-tions around this resort such as museums, nice cafes, shops, and restaurants. Jogasaki Kaigan has a trekking path along the rocky coast line. As you walk, the vista of Sagami Bay spreads in the distance. You can cross a thrilling sus-pension bridge, Kadowaki Suspension Bridge, which is the highlight of this trekking course.

Atagawa, Famous for Beach Hot SpringsAtagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden is a theme park which makes full use of its abundant hot spring energy. The park features 200 alligators comprising 22 species from all over the world, and about 9,000 kinds of tropical plants and fruit are well kept in the hot house.

Inatori, Proud of Having the No. 1 Catch of Kinmedai Inatori Port takes pride in having the No.1 catch of kinmedai, a very delicious fish, in the Izu Peninsula. The local kinmedai is highly rec-ommended among the local fish. Especially, nit-suke, a dish of kinmedai cooked in broth, tastes excellent. This area displays decorative tsurushi bina, hina dolls suspended from the ceiling, for Girls’ Day.

Kawazu, the City of Beautiful Cherry BlossomsGo south from Atagawa, and you will come to Kawazu, famous for Kawazu Cherry Blossoms. Since the cherry blossoms bloom earlier than in any other area in Honshu, from February to March, a lot of tourists visit Kawazu every year at this time. The city has hot springs and beaches, too.

Shimoda, a Stage of Japanese HistoryIn 1854, American warships commanded by Commodore Matthew Perry came to Shimoda. They came to demand that Japan open the country to foreign trade. You can en-joy strolling and thinking about this history along Perry Road. Some temples in Shimoda are closely associated with the history of abol-ishing the National Isolation Policy. The tradi-tional stone made buildings of Izu and namako walls (lattice patterned walls made of plaster and tiles) are found in the town. They are very unique to this area. Gas lights are lit at night creating a nostalgic atmosphere. Mt. Nesugata is named for the shape which is like that of a woman lying on her back. The top of Mt. Nesugata affords a magnificent view of the Izu Islands and the Amagi Mountains. Shimoda Aquarium puts on wonderful dolphin shows and visitors can play with the dolphins. There are many hot springs including Rendaiji, and Shimogamo. Yumigahama Beach, which lit-erally means a “bow beach,” is named for

its arched coastline. In summer, many sea bathers visit this white sand beach. The view from Irozaki Promontory at the tip of the Izu Peninsula is breathtakingly magnificent.

Shuzenji, the Oldest Hot Spring in Izu Shuzen-ji Temple was founded in 807 by Kobo Daishi, a great Buddhist priest. Shuzenji Town has many historic spots and hot spring resorts. “Tokko no Yu” is said to be the oldest hot spring source found in Izu. A tourist hik-ing path runs through the bamboo forests along the Katsura River. You can find tea houses and galleries along the way. Also, you cannot miss the Hakoyu Hot Spring bath with its noticeable 12-meter tower. You can enjoy the sparkling spring-time ocean view and beautiful autumn leaves in Shuzenji Park.

Amagi, the Town Surrounded by Rich NatureGo further south from Shuzenji, and you ar-rive at Amagi Onsen Hot Spring Resort. The thick forests and ravines are beautiful. There are seven hot springs along the Kano River. Of one of them, Yugashima Hot Spring, was a particu-lar favorite of many writers. Yasunari Kawabata, the winner of Nobel Prize in Literature, wrote “The Dancing Girl of Izu” here. Go down 180 stairs by the wasabi horseradish fields, and you will come to Joren Fall. The sound of water fall-ing into the basin under the waterfall is thun-derously impressive. You will feel refreshed by the cool spray of the waterfall. Go up the zig-zag curves of Old Amagi Street, and you will find Old Amagi Tunnel, which appears in “The Dancing Girl of Izu.” Walk through the tun-nel, and go on to Kawazu Seven Falls, some of which are big, some small.

SpecialtiesKinmedai and other fresh seafood are recom-mended. Wild boar stew and wasabi horserad-ish are traditional specialties, while wasabi soft ice cream is a new and unique one.

Izu is relatively close to Tokyo, and known as one of the best hot spring resorts in Japan. Izu also has a lot of tourist attractions. Why not visit Izu?

東伊豆的玄關―熱海

熱海有許多溫泉旅館與飯店林立，熱海梅園裡約有

730棵梅花樹，快的話12月就開始開花，到3月止都能

賞花。MOA美術館是現代化的美術館，建於俯視相模

灣的高台。主要展示東洋美術，包括3樣國寶在內約有

3500樣的收藏。起雲閣是備受許多文豪喜愛的名宅，

綠意盎然的庭園也非常美麗。

代表伊豆的溫泉勝地―伊東

沉穩雅致的伊東因為自古就有許多文人造訪，所以廣

佈文學碑與歌碑等等。湯之花街、電影街是餐廳與土

產店聚集的伊東主要街道。海岸街有魚乾店林立，走

在沿著松川的漫步道路上，有一家1928年創業、並於

1997年關門的溫泉旅館「東海館」。望樓是漂亮的日式

建築令人印象深刻，現在作為不留宿的溫泉設施，可讓

您享受大澡堂的入浴樂趣。從Nagisa公園眼前可望見

初島、真鶴半島，遠的話可望見三浦半島。再走遠一點

可至小室山公園。山茶與杜鵑花非常美麗。

藝術氣息洋溢的高原―伊豆高原

圓周為4公里的小火山湖一碧湖花一小時就可環繞一周。

一邊聽鳥叫一邊欣賞春天的櫻花與秋天的楓葉。宛如蓋

碗般的草山是大室山。天氣晴朗時，搭乘纜車爬上山頂

也可眺望富士山、天城連山、伊豆七島。大室山山麓有伊

豆仙人掌公園。還有美術館、博物館、漂亮的咖啡廳與

城崎海岸可以一邊望著相模灣一邊漫步在沿海的步道。

濱邊的溫泉―熱川/金目鯛魚的漁獲量日本第一稻取

熱川有利用豐富溫泉熱的熱川香蕉鱷魚園，飼養世界

鱷魚種類中的22種類，共有200隻。也有栽培熱帶植物

與果樹等約9000種。稻取港是伊豆半島中漁獲量第一

的良港。種類豐富的當地魚產中，首推金目鯛魚。特別

是煮金目鯛魚帶有油脂的佳餚。春天裝飾可愛的吊雛。

河津櫻漂亮的城市―河津

更往南走就可抵達因河津櫻聞名的河津。從2月上旬至

3月上旬期間，本州最早開的櫻花不能錯過喔！還有溫

泉與海水浴場等等。

開國舞台―下田

幕府末期黑船開來下田。培理小路可感受歴史並能漫步

街道。也有許多與開國相關的寺院。伊豆石造與海蔘壁建

築別有風情，夜晚點亮瓦斯燈。從像女性睡姿的睡姿山山

頂可眺望伊豆七島、天城連山等等。下田海中水族館能與

海豚遊玩。蓮台寺、下賀茂等也有很多溫泉。勾勒出美麗彎

弓的弓濱。夏天有許多喜歡白砂海濱的海水浴遊客造訪。

伊豆半島最南端的海角石廊崎是讓人震撼的景觀。

伊豆最古老溫泉―修善寺

修善寺是西元807年由弘法大師創立。也有許多歷史性

的景點，自古因溫泉聞名。獨鈷之湯是修善寺溫泉發源

之湯，據說是伊豆最古老的溫泉。沿著桂川的竹林裡

有漫步道路，還能享受喝茶處與藝廊樂趣。高度12ｍ

的望樓顯眼的溫泉是筥湯。修善寺公園裡，春天的梅

花與秋天的楓葉最美。

豐富的大自然―天城

從修善寺南下往天城溫泉鄉，森林與溪谷真美。以狩

野川為中心，分布七個溫泉地。其中，湯島溫泉備受許

多文人喜愛，諾貝爾獎作家川端康成就是在此地寫下

『伊豆舞娘』。一邊眺望山葵田，一邊走下180階的石

階，可達淨蓮瀑布。水隨著豪壯的聲音流入水淵，飛

沫變成霧氣紛飛。登上髮夾彎的天城街道舊道，就會出

現『伊豆舞娘』中的舊天城隧道。穿過隧道再走一會有

大小7個的瀑布為河津七瀑布。

Kikuchigawa Onsen is the collec-tive name of all the hot spring re-sorts including but not limited to

Yamaga Onsen, Hirayama, Tamana Onsen, Ueki Onsen, and Kikuchi Onsen along the Kikuchi River that f lows through northern Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu.

The origin of Yamaga Onsen is “Sakurayu,” a historic hot spring bath which boasts water so soft it is called “maiden’s skin.” It is tenta-tively closed for renovation but scheduled to re-open in 2012.

There is a foot bath along Buzen Road, where you can soak your feet in the hot springs that will relax and warm the body as well.

The road north from Kumamoto to Kita-Kyushu/Kokura in Fukuoka Prefecture is called Buzen Road. The hot spring town in this area prospered as a way station for daimyo (warlords) to stay during the Edo period (1603-1867). Visitors these days enjoy strolling in the town, relaxing at a restaurant and shopping in one of the many shops in the old merchants’ houses. Yachiyo-za is a kabuki theater that was built more than 100 years ago. The theater has re-

tained the style and arts of the Edo period, and is designated a national important cultural asset.

A variety of events take place in Yamaga and among the many is the Yamaga Tourou (Lantern Festival), an elegant event held every August. During the festival, the entire town is lit with Japanese paper lanterns. In February, the Yamaga Tourou Roman Festival is held ev-ery Friday and Saturday of the month, creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the town.

Yamaga tourou (lanterns) are made in the traditional manner by local artisans. They are made with washi (Japanese paper) using a mini-mum amount of glue. New ones are made each year and dedicated to Yamaga Tourou Festival in August.

The Yamaga Lantern Folkcraft Museum, housed in a sophisticated yet nostalgic Western-style building, has a display of the materials and information on Yamaga lanterns.

Yamaga Tourou Festival

位於熊本縣北部的菊池川流域的菊池川溫泉鄉為

山鹿溫泉、平山溫泉、玉名溫泉、植木溫泉、菊

池溫泉等多處溫泉的總稱。

據說為山鹿溫泉的前身-櫻湯是個有歷史性的溫

泉，溫和的泉水有「乙女之肌」美譽的傲人溫泉。現

在由於正在整修重建當中所以暫不營業，預定希望能

在2012年順利重新開張。遊客不妨在豐前街道路旁

的泡腳溫泉池稍稍歇腳休息，享受一下溫泉氣氛的

樂趣。不用更衣只要把雙腳泡在溫泉池水中就能讓全

身都暖和起來呢。

以熊本為起點北上，直通北九州-小倉的街道在熊

本稱為豐前街道。在江戶時代（1603年～1867年）是

大名行列的宿場町而繁榮一時的山鹿溫泉。現在則是

利用以前的店家所開的餐飲店及紀念禮品商店等，可

以邊休息邊享受漫遊此地的樂趣。為國家指定重要文

化財的八千代座是100多年前所蓋的劇場，傳承了江

戶時代的歌舞伎劇場的建築樣式至今。

山鹿有許多各式各樣的活動舉行，其中每年8月所

舉行的山鹿燈籠祭，將山鹿的街道上用燈籠點綴得

美輪美奐，是個充滿優雅氣息的祭典。此外，2月中的

每個星期五、六所舉行的山鹿燈籠浪漫，百華百彩，

讓人籠罩在夢幻般的浪漫氛圍中。

山鹿燈籠是用和紙跟少量的漿糊所製成的傳統工藝

品。每年都會製造出新的燈籠，奉納予8月的山鹿燈籠

祭。在洋溢著大正羅曼氣息的西洋館-山鹿燈籠民藝館

中，可以參觀欣賞有關山鹿燈籠的歷史資料及展示品。

Simple, cheap, ordinary but true taste temptations in Japan such as ramen, okonomiyaki (Japanese-style pancakes), udon (noodles made from wheat flour), yakisoba (fried noodles), curry rice, hamburgers, and donburi (bowl of rice with a variety of toppings) are called B-kyu gurume (B-class gourmet cuisine). B-kyu gurume dishes, well known to all the locals but not to most outsiders, are usually prepared using mainly local ingredients and are referred to as B-kyu gotochi gurume (B-class local gourmet dishes). B-kyu gotochi gurume embodies the charm of local ingredients and the local culture and has been attracting more and more attention these days.

B-1 Grand PrixThe “B-1 Grand Prix” is an annual B-kyu Gotochi Gurume Festival that began in 2006. Local members of the "Ai B League," (“We love B League”) compete against each other for the championship prize. Unlike other cook-ing contests, the aim of the B-1 Grand Prix is not only to find the best tastes but also recognition of the local areas of the participating groups. At the 5th Annual B-1 Grand Prix held in Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture, in September 2010, there were 46 participating groups and 435,000 visitors enjoyed the various local dishes during the two-day festival.

The 2010 champion was "Kofu tori motsu-ni," chicken giblets in a thick sweet-salty glaze made with sugar and soy sauce. It has been pleasing the palates of customers at soba restaurants in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, for many years. The runner-up was "Hiruzen yakisoba" from Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. This yakisoba dish containing chicken is cooked with a jingisukan (mutton barbe-

cue) sauce and a miso-based sauce. "Hachinohe senbei-jiru," a soup prepared with pieces of the specialty Nambu senbei (rice crackers) cooked in miso with plenty of local vegetables, came in third.

The 6th annual B-1 Grand Prix will be held in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, on November 12 and 13, 2011.

稀奇少見的，等具備這些條件的，又被譽為B級當地美食，傳遞了各處地方魅力訊

息成為了近年來備受矚目的焦點。

B-1冠軍賽

從2006年起每年舉辦的B級當地美食祭典-「B-1冠軍賽」。加盟了愛B協會（B級

當地美食愛好者的組織）的地方團體相互競爭一較上下。跟一般的料理大賽不

同，B-1冠軍賽的也朝向希望大家能提升對該地方的認知度而努力。於2010年

9月在神奈川縣厚木市所舉行的第5屆B-1冠軍賽中，共有46個團體參加展出，為

期2天的活動期間當中居然有43.5萬人之多來賓前往品嚐各地料理共襄盛舉。

在本冠軍賽中榮獲第一名冠軍寶座的是「甲府滷雞內臟」。將雞內臟以砂糖

和醬油滷得入味香甜又辛辣，是山梨縣甲府市的蕎麥麵店中從很早以前就受大

眾歡迎的一道美味。第二名是岡山縣真庭市的「蒜山炒麵」，用的是成吉思汗

烤肉醬及味噌醬汁調配而材料用的是雞肉。第三名是青森縣八戶市的「八戶仙

貝汁火鍋」。善用了地方出產的蔬菜所烹煮出的味噌火鍋湯頭中，把當地的南

部仙貝餅弄破後放進去煮出來的料理。

2011年的B-1冠軍賽預定在11月12～

13日於姬路舉行。

B-kyu Gotochi Gurume in Eastern JapanAomori Prefecture is famous for Hachinohe senbei-jiru and many other B-kyu Gotochi dish-es. "Aomori shoga-miso-oden" of Aomori City is a dish based on oden (fishcakes and vegetables stewed in a soy-flavored, dried bonito-based broth) with very unique ingredients, such as sea snails and daikakuten (a kind of deep-fried fish-cakes), served with shoga (ginger)-flavored miso-based sauce. "Kuroishi yakisoba" from Kuroishi City is made using a unique style of pouring the soup over the yakisoba noodles. Towada City serves "bara-yaki," in which sliced rib meat and onions are pre-marinated in a sweet soy-based sauce and grilled on an iron hotplate.

"Yokote yakisoba" from Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, is known for its unique combination of yakisoba with a sunny-side egg on top served with fukujinzuke (Japanese soy-based pickles) on the side. This was the gold prize winner at the 4th B-1 Grand Prix. With "Namie yakiso-

ba" from Namie town, Fukushima Prefecture, and "Joshu Ota yakisoba" from Ota City, Gunma Prefecture, to name but a few, it is obvious ya-kisoba is a popular B-kyu gotochi gu-rume dish.

"Black yakisoba" from Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, is a unique yakisoba made with squid ink.

The winner of the 3rd B-1 Grand Prix was "Atsugi shirokoro horumon"

from Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture. This is a delicious dish of grilled pork offal served at vari-ous restaurants, each with a different and origi-nal dipping sauce.

Shizuoka Prefecture boasts a wide variety of B-kyu gotochi gurume. "Fujinomiya yakisoba"

heads the list, followed by "Susono suigyoza" (boiled gyoza dumplings) from Susono City, "Mishima korokke" (croquette) from Mishima City, “tamago fuwafuwa" (fluffy egg) from Fukuroijuku in Fukuroi City, and many others, all of which are popular contestants in the B-1 Grand Prix. "Shizuoka oden" from Shizuoka City is oden dish with a local specialty, kuro hampen (black fishcake), topped with shred-ded dried fish and aonori (green seaweed). Hamamatsu City has "Hamamatsu gyoza" served with boiled beansprouts.

Katsura-muki:The usual method of cutting cylindrical vegetables such as daikon and carrots is julienne in which the vegetables are cut into 5-cm long pieces, the sides squared, and then each section cut into julienne strips of 1-2 mm wide ‘matchsticks.’ However, the traditional method to prepare Japanese cuisine called katsura-muki, is di�erent. After peeling a 5-cm long piece of daikon, a layer as thinly as possible is peeled o� in one continuous sheet by holding the knife in one hand and turning the vegetable in the other. Then, the peeled o� sheet is cut into 1-2 mm strips. For katsura-muki, a sharp knife and a lot of practice are essential.

Cut the pork into bite-sized pieces.Boil the water in a pan, add the sake and turn the heat down to medium.Put each piece of pork in the water one by one and, when the piece becomes pink, remove it, submerge it in cold water to cool and then place in a colander to drain.

Ponzu dressing:Cut the daidai in half and squeeze out the juice. Mix with soy sauce to make ponzu.

Place the pork and vegetables on a plate and serve with ponzu dressing, the grated daikon, and chili pepper to taste.

Tips:For the dressing, ponzu can be replaced by a sesame sauce or other dressing to your taste that is available on the market.There are many ways to make ponzu, such as with a dashi (dried bonito shavings) soup and mirin (sweet sake). Rail 鐵路Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

Bus 巴士 Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traf-fic jams at busy times of the day or night.Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and some-times English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

Taxis 計程車Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 710 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.
