hat fair 2011 - street Arts & outdoor PerformanceHat Fair is Britain’s

longest running festival of street

theatre and outdoor arts - taking place in Winchester on the first weekend of July every year. The 2011 festival will take place on Friday 1st - Sunday 3rd July. As ever, Hat Fair will continue to uphold

its reputation for presenting innovative and beautiful outdoor performances, exciting, unique and highly skilled small-scale shows and an engaging programme of community arts and education, woven into the heart of the beautiful city of Winchester.

Hat Fair offers three fun-filled days jam-packed with hundreds of breathtaking performances from many national and international companies, taking place throughout Winchester’s ancient streets. Even in this economically uncertain world, Hat Fair doesn’t charge the

audience a penny for any performances. The shows are free to view for all, but you can show your appreciation by putting coins (or notes!) in the artists' hats after the performance.

hampshire Artists co-operative summerexhibition

The Hampshire Artists’ Co-operative’s Summer Exhibition opens at

11am on Saturday 18th June 2011 at Selborne Gallery, The Plestor, Selborne, Hampshire.

During this exhibition the gallery will be featuring guest photographer Richard Brayshaw. Richard left a career in industry in 2002 to pursue his photography full time. In 2006 he completed an Access to an Art and Design course at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham and in 2009 he graduated from there with an MA in Photography. Richard is now combining teaching with his photographic art practice and works from his studio near Alton in Hampshire.

Richard’s work is a personal exploration of perceptions and psychological responses to our physical environment, both rural and urban. One of the series he is currently working on, entitled ‘edge of darkness’ made in a woodland setting explores Freud’s idea of the uncanny i.e. things which seem familiar and yet are disconcerting. His work is produced using pigment inks for longevity and is normally made in limited editions of

10 prints. Work is signed and numbered on the reverse. He can be contacted on 07708337269, emailed at [email protected] or viewed at www.richard-brayshaw.co.uk

All the permanent artists have produced a stunning new display of work for this show including sculpture, textiles, painting, jewellery, pottery, felt-work, drawing and glassware with prices starting at £10. Gift vouchers may be purchased and exchanged for a piece of artwork of choice.

Why not take advantage of the Art Council’s ‘Own Art’ Scheme which is designed to make buying contemporary work of art available to everyone. Up to £2,000, or as little as £100, can be borrowed and paid back in 10 monthly, interest free, instalments. Please ask for more information at the gallery or visit www.ownart.org.uk

Come and meet the artists who will be delighted to show you their work and explain how it is produced. The exhibition continues until 31st August 2011 with the gallery being open from 11am until 5pm Tuesday until Sunday each week. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

For more information, please contact Selborne Gallery on 01420 511347 or visit their website:www.hampshireartistscooperative.co.uk

NEW FARM ROAD BRIDGEIn a previous Forum article we reported that the Environment Committee wished to see ‘Improvements to New Farm Road Bridge’. This appears to have has been interpreted as ‘Renovations were needed to New Farm Road Bridge’. We would like to clarify that as far as we know no renovation work is needed but we do believe that an

CCTV AT THE ARCThe Alresford Recreation Centre (ARC) entrance door has been smashed for a second time and the new play equipment in Arlebury Park continues to be targeted by late night vandals. We have, therefore, decided that the installation of CCTV needs to be considered in order to deter vandalism.

Do you have minor damage to your car?The car pictured is a 2010 Bentley GT. The owner had caught a low brick wall with the front of the bumper, causing deep scratches, as well as similar damage to the rear bumper and a wing mirror. If the car had gone to the supplying dealer, or a reputable body shop, the repair bill would have been in excess of £1000, and the car would have been away for a week. Auto Brite repaired all the damage on the owners’ driveway, to the same standard as a body shop, in less than a day, for £400. The owner was so pleased with the service from Auto Brite, especially on such a valuable car, he offered to write a testimonial. For an estimate on any minor car body repairs, please see our advert.

Winchester fashion Week 2011

In The Limelight – Old Time Music Hall visits Old Alresford! As we walked

into the Old Alresford Christy Hall, we knew we were in for a special evening. The tables were charmingly set with bright cloths and flickering candles, the song sheets were at the ready and the bar was open! An Old Time Music Hall was ready to start. As the lights dimmed and the music began our host for the evening, the impressive, imposing, irrepressible MoC, with a quick quip and banter, advised the audience of the joys to come. With that the cast surged onto the stage to the tune of There’s No Business Like Show Business.Cleverly constructed as a show within a show, the younger members of the cast had plenty of opportunity to show what a talented lot they are. They didn’t think much of their director’s choice of song ('too old fashioned!’ they complained), and instead launched into a rousing chorus of We Could Have Been Anything We Wanted To Be – great singing and great choreography. Songs and sketches followed swiftly one after another as the cast ‘rehearsed’ for their performance under the critical eye of their stage director – who had his own problems to worry about, what with his ex being in the cast, actors

turning up late and egos inflating!

The second half opened with Anything Goes – it was just as well we were warned! As The Great Big Saw drew nearer, we were on the edge of our seats, expecting poor Vera to be sliced in half – only to be saved at the last moment!

The Master and the Maid was a wonderful old-fashioned skit made to look like a Victorian cinematograph, hilariously mimed to a racing piano accompaniment – then rewound, then fast-forwarded. We had hardly recovered when we were laughing again at the antics of the young driver trying to fix his car with his sweetheart looking on in Get Out and Get Under – great footwork from the driver!

In true Music Hall fashion, the audience was encouraged to join in with the cast through a medley of songs as the show drew to a close and the atmosphere was terrific.

This was another great performance from TOADS with new faces and voices to add even more talent to a committed cast. Helen Gard and Jo Stokes, ably supported by the many members of TOADS, created the show. A great evening, thank you TOADS.

Winchester’s first ever Fashion Week is happening from

25th – 31st July. This is the culmination of an exciting

programme put together by established and emerging members of the design community involving local businesses and venues.

Wayne Hemmingway, designer and entrepreneur, founder of Red or Dead and Vintage Hemmingway will officially open the event at the Winchester Discovery Centre on Tuesday 19th July at 7.00pm (booking required). There will be free catwalk shows at the Brooks Shopping Centre from Monday to Wednesday at 12.30 and a Pop Up Design Shop and Gallery with millinery, jewellery, ceramics, interior products and product design, painting and photography; some works available for the first time. Thursday 28th – Saturday 30th July from 7.00 - 8.00pm at Winchester’s Guildhall. This will be a catwalk show to envy the Big Tops. Think Cirque du

Soleil with less acrobatics and more appliqué, add in a little of the McQueen shows and roll up roll up! Expect to be wooed by our clan of dreamy models, acrobats, clowns, harlequins and dancers, with clothes by local students and designers; this is one show not to be missed.

After a lapse of one year Hampshire Open Studios is up and running again. All past participants in this highly popular event will know how hard Wendi Watson worked over a period of nine years

to provide such an exciting and varied event throughout the county. After a long illness it is sad to report Wendi’s death. Pete Gilbert and Anne Middleton have bravely taken up the challenge of resuming the event and they have been delighted at the response there has been from both artists and craftspeople as well as from the public.

Once again artists from all over the county will be opening their homes and studios to visitors between August 20th to 29th. A total of 171 venues will be open and at many of the venues you will be able to watch artists at work who will be happy to discuss their work with you, probably over a cup of tea. The range of artists will be vast, including mixed media, photographers, wood workers, sculptors, glass workers and textile artists. There will be several groups exhibiting together to give an even wider choice to look at; most will have items for sale.

The brand new koru Arts gallery in Medstead will be displaying bronzes, ceramics, glass and jewellery and a whole lot more, whilst Wessex Sculptors will be displaying

their sculptures using a wide range of materials. Jan Harbon in Liphook will be showing off her beautiful botanical paintings and you will also be able to stock up with some really gorgeous greetings cards.

Koru Art Gallery, Medstead

Look out for the cerise Open Studios catalogues that will be available all over the county in a variety of public places or from the artists themselves. Just pick one up, plan your trips and see some of the wonderful arts and crafts that Hampshire has to offer.

The Alresford Watercress Festival... What an outstanding occasion

it was! Fifteen thousand people were estimated to have poured into Alresford on 15th May this year, all in celebration of the humble green-leafed watercress. Throughout the day superb musical performances took place in St.John's, often with standing room only; and then there was the John Pearson Hall. Hefin and Peter Tudor are an amazing couple of people - I can do nothing but offer thanks to so many people for making cakes, serving teas, clearing up, washing up, and chatting-up customers as well.

St.John's cafe did a roaring trade all day. There was a remarkable atmosphere around - thank you so much

to all of you who helped in any way. First indications are that we raised about £2000 after expenses. As one person said 'A goodly sum for one day's effort'. If only!

There were many compliments about the delicious and wonderful cake selection as well as the friendly people on duty. It is just eight years ago when Jennifer Laing and others launched the first festival on a modest scale. It is thanks to her vision, and since then Clive Burgess and his team, in conjunction with Vita cress, that it has become the excellent event we enjoy now.

community news - the Garden

the Act of Gardening the Valley GardenersAs professions go,

it has been said that the Church

and horticulture have some similarities with regard to the way they may act upon our lives. Firstly, we are both at the behest of a much greater force and secondly, it is absolute murder on the knees.

Many professional gardeners will have been combining the two over the last weeks in kneeling at their borders and praying that cool, refreshing rain, would fall consistently and gently upon their plots. Now that it has come, not only has it greened lawns and quenched the parched throats of withering plants, it has washed in all the top dressing of fertilisers that have sat around on the surface for weeks. Without rain percolating through the soil, no nutrient can make its passage from top to toe, down to the delicate root hairs, where osmosis (the passage of salts in solution into the root cells) can happen. So not only were your plants a little less turgid, they were probably hungry too. Leaves can be likened to the small faces of children, in their ability to confer the current health, or otherwise, of an individual in

question. A plant leaf and a child’s face, both glossy and unblemished, is a portent of health.

Changes from this happy state in plants, be it yellowing between veins, a red or amber hue, the appearance of spots or pustules, are symptomatic of a dis-ease, maybe a minor infection, or a nutrient deficiency and there are a myriad of books with excellent photographs, on the market, to help you diagnose the condition, almost as many as there are for the ‘correct’ rearing of the healthy child.

Now, at last, after lugging water every evening, you can put down that watering can and enjoy the fruits of your labours.

Most of your old rose flowers will have had their best days, your asparagus should be tall feathery fronds, the first salad stuff and new potatoes will have graced your plates and their fresh succulence is your reward… But wait…the spectacle continues in the next act, so draw up a chair, July is here.

Julian Blackwell is Head Gardener of Dean House gardenswww.deanhousegardens.co.uk

All over the Itchen Valley, keen gardeners are relishing the spring

and summer months. That is when the Valley Gardeners make their visits to beautiful and unusual gardens all over the south of England.

This popular gardening club has just celebrated its 10th Anniversary and, since its foundation, it has kept a loyal membership of 70 or so people, mostly based in the Itchen Valley. The yearly programme of events is a blend of talks, lectures and demonstrations from interesting (and sometimes well-known) speakers in the colder months and garden visits in the summer. There’s also an annual luncheon and gardening quiz to kick off the year in January and a chance to peek inside fellow members’ gardens in the “Open Gardens” summer event, with a sumptuous tea provided.

Mark Porter is the new Chairman of the Valley Gardeners and has some innovative and exciting ideas for broadening the scope and

appeal of the club. Evening meetings are currently being trialled to encourage members who are too busy during the day to attend. Mark, and his wife Jackie, open their garden at The Down House, Itchen Abbas under the National Garden Scheme, so Mark has lots of horticultural experience as well as boundless enthusiasm for his task. He says, “As the new Chairman I hope to bring a fresh feel to the club as it embarks on its next 10 years. I’ve been talking to the membership and am keen to introduce some really practical gardening meetings and also to involve the members in exchanging ideas and sharing with each other their immense wealth of gardening knowledge”.

Recent visits have included a picnic supper and dusk visit to the rose garden at Mottisfont Abbey and a May jaunt to two delightful gardens in Crawley. In August, the Valley Gardeners will visit the dahlia garden at Sherfield English. One does not have to be a knowledgeable gardener to belong to The Valley Gardeners, although obviously a love of things horticultural helps!

Cheriton, in Hampshire, was the site of one of the most important

battles in the English Civil War. In 1644 hundreds of men lost their lives in a battle which was to mark a turning point in the English Civil War.

The Sealed knot Society will recreate the Battle of Cheriton at Scrubbs Farm, nr Alresford between 11am and 5.30pm on July 2nd and 3rd. The re-enactment starts at 2.45pm. The society will restage the 1644 clash that took place on the fields between Cheriton and Bishop's Sutton. There will also be a range of rural and historic activities and stalls. Tickets are £7 for adults, £4 for children, a family ticket is £20

The Battlefield of Cheriton is an area of national importance, both historically

and environmentally - a true gem buried in the heart of the Hampshire countryside near Alresford. We are very appreciative to the fact that the land provides employment and revenue to our local farming community and all of our activities are conducted with this in mind.

Alresford surgery news

Please note our new telephone number for Out of Hours service –0300 300 2012

BOWEL SCREENINGWe strongly recommend patients who receive sample kits to complete the test. Bowel cancer is one of the commonest forms of cancer and early treatment gives a high probability of cure. This simple test is one of the most effective cancer screening tests and we strongly recommend it to our patients. The programme is aimed at patients aged 60-74; replacement kits can be obtained by phoning 0800 707 6060.

Any patient who notices a persistent change over a period of 6 weeks in their bowel habits or rectal bleeding is recommended to make an appointment with a GP whether or not he or she has had the test.

HAMPSHIRE HEALTH RECORDThe issue of the Shared Patient Record has once again been in the national press, mainly for the reason that the IT solution to providing it still does not appear to be viable and may never be. However, we are taking the opportunity to once again remind patients that unless they have asked to ‘opt out’, part of their medical record is available to clinicians within Hampshire hospitals and social and community care teams for providing the best possible care locally. For more information, leaflets are available from the surgery or at www.hantshealthrecord.nhs.uk.

If you do want to opt out of this and the national record please write to the Practice Manager.

NHS REFORMSyou will have read or heard about the Government’s proposals for reforming the NHS. There has been considerable debate about this and opposition to some of the proposals including from the medical profession. The necessary Bill to enable the changes to happen is under review by the Government and so has yet to be passed by Parliament. However, the broad shape of the new arrangements is likely to be as set out in the original White Paper and a huge amount of work has been done towards creating the structures and bodies that will be required to implement the changes. Hampshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) has already merged with Southampton City PCT, Portsmouth City PCT and Isle of Wight PCT to achieve management cost savings and to prepare for the PCTs’ abolition in 2013. The new merged PCT retains responsibility for ensuring the provision of all health care to the population it serves but will be working increasingly closely with the new GP Commissioning Consortia which will take over this role in April 2013.

For several years, the Government has encouraged a process known as Practice Based Commissioning (PBC) where a number of practices combine to form a locality group. The purpose of this is to discuss new, better ways of delivering care, and to encourage more integration between primary (GPsurgeries) and secondary (hospitals etc) care. Under

the Bill currently before parliament GP practices will form commissioning consortia (GPCC) which will carry on the work of the PBC localities but also take over the role of the PCT in managing the budget for secondary care and defining what care will be purchased for the population. The role of the GPCC will be tightly regulated and constrained by the need to provide minimum service levels. The White Paper indicated that primary care services would be commissioned at a national level but this has since been the subject of considerable debate and we do not know who will be managing our contract after 2013.

The Alresford practice is a member of the Winchester PBC locality and has one seat on its management board. The current plan is that this locality will combine with other localities in Andover, Eastleigh, Romsey and the New Forest. This grouping serves a population of 500,000. The Winchester locality will have one seat on the executive board that will ultimately decide on priorities for commissioning and service redesign.

The local health economy has a considerable financial deficit as we move towards this arrangement. I am sad to say that most of the effort in the PBC locality is focussed on addressing this deficit while attempting not to cut services. This inevitably

means that services will be delivered in different ways and some of the clinics and referral mechanisms we are used to will change - many already have. The need for the GPCC to continue to do this will be even greater as they will hold the budget and the responsibility for financial balance. New or changed care pathways will be unlikely to be approved unless they are cheaper than existing services or lead to savings elsewhere in the system.

The GPCC board will be elected by the PBC localities this summer and will start working with the PCTs in developing strategies for the future. As a practice, we send a representative to the Winchester Locality Group and so have a voice in the debate about service changes. We do not however have any direct control and the idea that GPs will "control the budget" does not apply to individual GPs or Practices. We would encourage all our patients to express their ideas and views through the Patient Participation Group, details of which are available on the surgery website.

sun hill Junior school news column

Welcome to Sun Hill Junior School’s column. Over the

last month we have been busy at school focusing hard on our learning. Each year group has started a new theme which involves a ‘hook’ to grab our attention and get us really

excited about the work that we will be undertaking.

year 6 have started focusing on Europe and the European Union. They have looked carefully into the countries, the European Union, the flags, the capital cities and the euro.

They have also created persuasive posters advising

people to join the European Union.

year 5 started their Fabulous Farming theme with their second visit to West Tisted farm. They began the day revisiting the crops to measure how much they had grown since September – about 6 feet on average! In the afternoon they went into the forest to measure trees in order to try and identify how old they were by using a mathematical formula.

year 4 started their theme, ‘Feel the Force’ with a trip to Intech. Whilst there, they experienced the ‘egg drop’ investigation (which needless to say had messy results!) and try out all the amazing exhibits. I think it is safe to say that every single one of them had a fantastic time.

year 3 began their theme called ‘Gripping Games’. To launch the theme, the children played a carousel of games which included board games, sporty games and traditional games. year 3 are also learning more about ways to use our fantastic play equipment.

In our next column we look forward to sharing with you the outcomes of each of our themes and how we have demonstrated that we have learnt new skills, deepened our knowledge and are able to apply this to new situations.

Reported by Ellie Waite, Ella Woods, Rosie Harkness and kezia Truss.

Three·Six·Five Hairdressing - specialists in new clients

You have your own needs and desires. That is why Three·Six·Five Hair Designers listen to what you say. They know the difference

between ordinary hairdressing and personal designing.

ImportantIf you make a mistake with clothes or make-up you can,

in many cases, take them back or at worse leave them in a drawer. Your hair is a very important part of your

appearance. It is ‘the gown you never take off’. So often ‘it is your mood-maker’. Yet getting what you want can be so frustrating.

Three·Six·Five TogethernessWe care about the way your hair looks between visits to the salon.

Three·Six·Five Hairdressers are specially trained. They use a ‘Five-Step’ recipe to make sure the successful balance of ingredients is right for each client. They know the value of asking the right questions and looking at all the key elements of a hair design which will work for you every day.

SpecialThey have a special service for new clients. If you

have always wanted to meet a top hairdresser to whom you could say ‘What would you do for me?’ now you have. Just ask for the Three·Six·Five Recipe service: like you ‘it’s a little special’. So friendly.

What do you mean ‘summer’s over’? No, here’s a short walk for a hot day with a place to picnic and paddle at the end. Park at Itchen Abbas village hall; once

out of the car park turn left and cross the road and walk down the road signposted to Avington.

you will see St.John the Baptist Church to your right. Just before the church gate on your right, you will see a footpath sign and a gravel drive, keeping to

the right with the houses on your left walk up to the end of the drive. Here you will see a small gate in front of you, go through and follow the narrow footpath to the end. There will be fields to your left and serious house envy to your right!

At the end of the footpath, there will be another gate to go through; cross over the tree-lined drive and through another gate into

a field. Again, there are some beautiful houses to your right and a glimpse of the river to your left.

Just keep going straight on through the field then you will see to your left, just at the end of the field, a place where the riverbank slopes gently down to a place that is perfect for a picnic and safe for children to paddle. Enjoy. Gill Grant

hampshire mum

It is often better to travel than to arrive. Ummmm that does not necessarily apply if one has to travel in the trusty Renault all the way to St Ives. I suppose if I were to be really honest it all started about six months ago; a strange

sound emanating from the core (that’s a mechanical term obviously), of the trusty Renault. Not a squeak or clunk, no, this was a definite whirring with an underlying modicum of expensive sounding grinding.

The husband was of little help, "It’s because you hold on to your clutch, Sandra love."

"I do not."

"yes you do love, anyway it’s nothing; just turn the radio up".So I took the husband’s advice but then on a lone trip to Wiltshire it was apparent that the noise, far from being drowned by Mumford and Sons, was getting worse...

Then before you could say "doesn’t time fly?" there we were one wet and windy Friday night packing up the trusty Renault in preparation for our camping trip to St. Ives. The husband by this time had decided that there was indeed a noise, (having initially sworn that he couldn’t hear it), and that we should cut back on the gear as we couldn’t risk towing the trailer."I’m not sure if we could be low-loaded back by the AA with a trailer love".

Ah ever the optimist.

Despite every effort being made (I left at least one box behind…and the fairy lights) the car was, well, ludicrously full. The husband was in melt down. "This is crazy, I can’t cope with this, we’ll have to get the trailer and if we break down, well that will be that!!!" I gently pointed out, just as Star II managed to secrete yet another soft toy into the back that we had in fact driven some 1500 miles through France with a similar amount of ‘luggage’ and all had been fine."Oh yes love ‘fine’, apart from the car breaking down three times, having to be towed off the ferry and you sitting all the

I t I s o f t e n B e t t e r

to trAVelway back from Newhaven with a bag of poo on your lap!!!" That’s another story, but he had a point……"Happy memories, eh? Don’t worry, it’s all in now, we’ll be absolutely fine."

I didn’t think it was possible to cross all of your fingers and toes simultaneously.

Having left so early on the Saturday by the time we got to Stonehenge there was only a solitary figure in a high vis jacket standing before the Stones (don’t make Druids like they used to), and before we knew it we were breakfasting at Exeter Services.

We did in fact make the trip in record time without the aid of the lovely Nigel; since the Newhaven episode we are on first name terms with a man from the AA, (like I say that’s another story). knowing that the husband would probably be falling asleep by the time we reached the next Cathedral City I had elected to drive. Having replaced the internal rubber mats with those of the prayer variety, I felt the trusty Renault and I had an understanding; knackered woman and equally knackered machine in perfect harmony; there was an inexplicable fusion between us.

As Star I slept, (it’s in the genes), Star II was plugged into the husband’s iPod and happily sang along to AC/DC and other memorable tracks, and I had a chance to observe life on the road.

It was all rather relaxing really, although I felt ashamed at my smug satisfaction as older and far more overloaded cars than ours passed by. I had no idea a Cavalier could sit that low on the road; must have been the five bikes on the roof. Was that a real Labrador squashed between the calor gas and a duvet? But then as I took to the inside lane on the steep hills of Devon I was at once irritated by the superior glances of the Audi, Mercedes and BMW drivers as they glided by presumably on their way to their holiday homes. One could almost hear them say "Look at the state of that".

I conducted an on the road survey and concluded that many cars that profess to be spacious, the Volvos, Porsche Cheyennes, Nissan various, Landrover various, are in fact very tall but have no boot capacity. No, what is required in the pagan household come the sad, (I can barely say it), but all too inevitable demise of the trusty Renault, is a black ….Renault Espace.

Patting the steering wheel reassuringly I turned up the radio to drown out the sound of the whirring and grinding. At that point, I respectfully decided not to overtly covet the Espace; after all, there was the return journey to make…

effect on communities such as Alresford. I know this is causing some degree of worry locally so let me say first I was really sad to hear Alresford Police Station is proposed for closure as part of an ongoing estates review. However, I do think we have to recognise people are simply not using police stations as they once did.

The alternative to this kind of change could be a reduction of police officers or PCSOs on the streets of the town and coalition Ministers have made it very clear they want forces to protect the front line first. Hampshire Constabulary has given me very clear assurances that alternative sites are being secured in Alresford, where our excellent beat officers and PCSOs will be based, before any change is even begun. I will be working alongside residents to hold them to exactly that over coming years.

Finally, I am really pleased to announce my Summer Tour which will be bringing my constituency surgery (among other things) right into the heart of Alresford this August. Please look out for more details about that through your door and in the press. you can see more on all the above stories and get in touch if you need my help via www.stevebrine.com / 01962 791110.

Steve BrineMP for Winchester

I can honestly say I love my job but to be fair, there are many unglamorous days

for a Member of Parliament. Wednesday 25 May 2011 was not one of them!

Seeing President Barack Obama address the Joint Houses of Parliament was quite a moment and as I reflected on his speech I wondered what part of this free-market, pro-interventionist address could not have been delivered by any US President (Democrat or Republican) of the past 30 years.

Elsewhere in Parliament as a member of its main scrutiny committee stage I have been looking heavily into the detail of the Energy Bill. I was also extremely humbled to be nominated as Backbencher of the year by Breakthrough Breast Cancer for my work as co-chair of the All-Party Group in Westminster.

Locally, I handed out the prizes at the Winchester Penguins Swimming Gala, attended the Winchester Business Excellence Awards, visited the first Eco Friendly camping pods in Bighton near Alresford (pictured with owners Caz & Dave and my own little Emily) and it was my great honour to start the Winchester Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research. I have also met recently with our new Chief Inspector of Police to discuss the budgetary pressures he is facing and their

steve Brine'smonthly column

“Secondly, we were delighted to read recently in the Forum that Steve had given The Alresford Pigs Association a mention in Parliament whilst discussing and debating the PM’s vision for a Big Society. We wrote to him to thank him for our first ever parliamentary mention and for supporting the Co-op Community card initiative – an initiative that will allow the Pigs to support even more needy causes in our local community this year”

If you haven’t got a card please pick one up in store and use it each time you shop – then watch the instore fund barometer grow!

More information about the work and whereabouts of the Alresford Pigs can be found at www.alresfordpigs.org

A publicity Pig was recently caught red handed along with

Steve Brine, our local MP and store manager Derek Hawkins outside the Alresford Co-op. Snapped by local paparazzi, Chair Pig Robert Sanders was spotted with cameras and video cameras in tow….

Upon questioning, the reason for the media attention became clear, with Robert clarifying, “There are two important reasons for us being photographed and videoed to-day at the Co-op. First, the Southern Co-operative set a generous and ambitious £15,000 target for our Community card fund this year. We are delighted to announce that we’ve received a terrific response to this fundraising campaign, and after 9 months have reached a fantastic sum of £10,000. Today is about saying a big ‘thank you’ to all card carrying Co-op customers for their support”

great deal. If you need your carpets cleaned

and are looking for an award-winning company who will arrive on time, will be courteous, respectful and above all trustworthy - then you're invited to take advantage one of the three extraordinary value, high quality, carpet and upholstery cleaning deals we're offering new customers -- because we want to give you the chance to get to know our service and to find out how impressively new, fresh and bright your carpets will look when cleaned and freshened by The Carpet Care People.

CurtainsOur new curtain cleaning service is carried out in your home, right where they hang. It's a fuss-free way to have your curtains cleaned and refreshed and is often the 'finishing touch' to spring cleaning a room!

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

METHOD

In a blender add the yoghurt, the cloves from the whole garlic head, coriander seeds, chilli, and lemon juice and blend together until you obtain a smooth paste. Taste and then add salt and pepper as desired. The paste requires a strong flavour as it must penetrate the meat.

Cover the chicken on all sides with the paste and then place into a deep dish. Leave the chicken to marinade for 36 hours, 48 hours is even better. Turn the chicken every few hours to achieve an even marinade.

Cooking day has arrived - with a rubber spatula remove as much of the marinade as possible from the chicken and the dish and keep aside. Light your barbecue, and place the chicken on it when the heat has died down. The barbecue must be gently hot not scalding and definitely no flames as the meat will burn. The embers must be just right, it should take around 40 minutes to be ready. Turn the meat on the barbecue regularly to cook evenly (do the same if you are using the oven). Half way through cooking add the sprigs of rosemary and four half garlic heads. In a pan cook the retained marinade paste thoroughly, add a drop of water or olive oil if the mixture is dry, then add a little finely chopped mint (or fresh coriander) for a delicious fresh flavour.

Serve with grilled vegetables, like slices of aubergine, courgettes, sweet peppers and onions. Some grilled pine kernels sprinkled on top will add that little extra touch.Serves: 4

1 butterflied chicken or a chicken cut into pieces

1 whole garlic head, each clove diced in small pieces

The juice of two lemons

2 soup spoons of crushed coriander seeds.

A touch of chilli powder

Are you tired of hearing about them? Tales of the bankers bonuses are about as exciting as playing Monopoly on a continuous loop and the amounts of money may as well be part of

the same game, £650,000, £2,000,000, £6,000,000 on top of their salaries; “Oh let’s buy Bond Street, Mayfair, a station or two. Have an extra £200, (or is that million), for passing ‘Go’ and a ‘Get out of Jail Free’ card.”

And that’s the issue for us mortals whose public money has gone to shore up the likes of RBS, Northern Rock, Lloyds TSB, (Trouble Subtracting & Balancing), et al. It would appear that having screwed up in a spectacular fashion they have indeed used the ‘Get out of Jail Free’ card to its fullest effect. I wonder if there is any other profession where that could occur without public retribution. Yes, we’ve heard the odd rant, a half hearted enquiry or two, and polite suggestions from Government that such bonuses need to be restricted, but it would seem all of these have conveniently fallen on deaf ears.Had we been French there would have been guillotines erected in the City by now, but no whilst the media continue to fuel the flames we have become resigned, there is nothing we can do.

In the defence of bankers, and I will be brief, whether they be fund managers, brokers or whatever, they do work very long hours under huge amounts of pressure and are literally ‘owned’ by the banks who employ them. The amount of their salary and bonus is only a reflective percentage of what the bank has made globally and they probably pay 45% tax. But actually as I write I’m thinking ‘tough’ they still get way too much and what is tantamount to the banks’ greed and inopportune risk taking has rendered us as a country, how shall we say, a tad overdrawn. In short, they paid themselves bonuses

when they were failing to do a good job and they knew it.So it’s because they have played Monopoly, and indeed monopolies, with our money and we have to pick up the tab that makes us so very angry.

Are we equally angered by other high earners? That cheeky chappy Gary Lineker earns an estimated £6,000,000 from the BBC and no doubt another packet for being the ‘face’ of Walkers crisps, he knows his Cheese and Onion from Prawn Cocktail that one, but it’s allowed because he used to play internationally and once alerted the England manager that Gazza was in tears. National treasure he may be but our licence fees still contribute to his salary.

And then there’s Wayne Rooney who is clearly talented, from the waist down at least, who is paid in the region of £260,000 per week, plus bonuses, to which those devotees who struggle to find their season ticket money contribute.

The relationship between those types of high earners and us is one of parasite and host. The worst that Rooney can do is to not score but the media keeps us fed (if we are interested) with every scrap from the table that is his private life, and we consume it avidly.

Bankers are portrayed as champagne swilling toffs by the press but it’s the bankers who feed from us to the point of, in some cases, our financial ruination. There’s no entertainment value in being bled dry, why should we have to pay for that?
