Cover: The area around Mt. Fuji was designated a World Heritage Site in June, 2013. In commemoration of this listing, we use “Fujisan” as a motif of the cover of this issue. Also, we have changed the cover from one using photos to one using an ink brush painting to create a more uniquely Japanese feel for this issue. Autumn is the best season for traveling in Japan. Enjoy!

Biei is surrounded by hills spreading at the foot of the Tokachi mountain range. In the hills of Biei, each season has its own beauty, which has long charmed many photographers. The green shoots in spring, lavender in summer, patch-work of fields in autumn. In winter, the view of the hills completely covered with snow is majes-tic and mystic. Sometimes you can see trees cov-ered with white-ice rime, and “diamond dust,” ground-level clouds formed of tiny ice crystals.

You will never get bored from visiting Hokkaido. One visit is not enough to see all the sightseeing spots in this vast island. Here we will introduce you to Asahikawa, Furano, Sapporo and Chitose in the central area of Hokkaido.

The sight of the carpet of colorful flowers is just splendid. Farm Tomita is a popular lavender farm. Flowers of the sea-son are in blossom along the Hanabito Kaido, or “Flower Road” (Route 237, which runs from Biei to Shimukappu). The peak season of lavender is from the end of June to the be-ginning of August. From mid-August, brightly colored salvia and cosmos as well as pink cleome come into blossom. You can enjoy all the flowers except lavender until October.

Try and experience outdoor activities in the refreshing nature. You can enjoy fishing, rafting, and canoeing in and on the Sorachi River. There are also facilities for paragliding, golf and trekking. The attractions in Furano Kankan Mura are hot air balloon rides, “iced café,” and skiing and other snow activities in winter.

As for the food, you definitely must try red-fleshed melon, watermelon, Furano milk and cheese. There are also vine-yards and a winery. The latest popular dish is Furano Omu Curry prepared with an abundance of local vegetables.

Sapporo is the fifth-largest city in Japan with a population of 1,900,000. But once you are outside of the downtown area, there are many sightseeing spots where you can fully enjoy nature such as Hitsujigaoka Observatory Hill, among numerous others. Sapporo is the cultural center of Hokkaido and a town with fine, beautiful modern buildings which were first developed from the end of the 19th century. It is also a gourmet heaven; you can enjoy a large variety of local special-ties including ramen, mutton barbecue, soup curry, sushi and seafood. Susukino district is the nightlife center of Sapporo.

Asahikawa is home to Asahikawa Zoo. This zoo is known for its unique way of exhibiting animals called interactive animal viewing by which you can observe and learn about animal life.

Asahikawa Winter Festival, an annual event in Asahikawa, will take place from February 6 to 11 in 2014. Gigantic snow statues, one of which was recognized as the world’s biggest snow structure in the Guinness World Records in 1994, are made by locals. The feature of an Asahikawa’s snow statue is that, unlike statues of the Sapporo Snow Festival, it does not have any frame. World Ice Sculpture Contest is held as one of the festival’s events. Asahikawa Zoo is also open during the festival. You should not miss the march of penguins that can be seen only in winter.

Asahikawa ramen is one of the three famous Hokkaido ra-mens. The surface of the ramen is covered with a layer of lard in order to keep the soup hot under the freezing cold tempera-tures in Asahikawa. Tabemarche is a food festival held in au-tumn every year. You can enjoy a variety of local specialties. In 2013, Tabemarche will take place from September 14 to 16.

Odaiba was originally constructed as a series of small fortress islands equipped with Western-style artil-lery batteries in the Tokyo Bay area in 1853 by the Edo government in order to protect the country from possible attack by sea, the primary threat felt after the arrival of American ships under Commodore Perry. During the 20th century, Odaiba was developed and officially designated a Tokyo Waterfront Secondary City Center. Today, Odaiba has been attracting attention as a fashionable urban resort with many com-mercial facilities. The streets are lined with modern buildings while at the same time there is some sooth-ing and nostalgic feel to this place.

Traditional Japanese AtmosphereYou can enjoy nostalgic arcade games and cheap sweets at Daiba 1-chome Shotengai (shopping district) in DECKS Tokyo Beach. The recon-struction of town scenery from 50 years ago is worth seeing. It is a perfect place for trying and comparing the tastes of Japanese food, includ-ing Odaiba Takoyaki Museum and Ramen Kokugikan GOTOCHI MENMATSURI, home to famous ramen and noodle restau-rants from around the county. At Oedo-Onsen Monogatari, you can enjoy not only many kinds of hot spring baths but also shopping and stay-ing. In your yukata (a light, cotton kimono), hang around at the fair for old fashioned games and experience spa treatments.

Statue of Liberty in OdaibaThe French Statue of Liberty came to be exhib-ited at Odaiba Seaside Park from 1998 to 1999 in commemoration of “The French Year in Japan.” After the statue was returned to France, its bronze replica was erected at the same place.

Shopping FacilitiesOdaiba offers a variety of shopping places. AQUA CiTY Odaiba is a mall with casual fashion stores and delicious restaurants on the theme of “Tokyo Resort Island.” VenusFort is a reproduction of a medieval European village with many stores, including tax-free ones and outlet price ones. At DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, you can enjoy not only shopping but also exploring Japanese pop culture such as a “maid café” and GUNDAM FRONT TOKYO. The full-sized GUNDAM- statue on display in Festival Plaza is overwhelming.

Access to OdaibaBy train, take Yurikamome or Rinkai lines to get to Odaiba. A one-day pass (800 yen) is a good deal for getting around using Yurikamome line. Water-buses are also available and you can take one from Asakusa, another popular sight-seeing spot. Do not miss the view of Tokyo and Rainbow Bridge from the water-buses. Inside Odaiba, there are 20 bicycle rental places. Tokyo Bay Shuttle buses are free of charge. Take a nice walk on the beach at Odaiba Seaside Park to feel the sea breeze.

Hotels in OdaibaFor your budget stays or business trip stays, Tokyo Bay Ariake Washington Hotel and Hotel Sunroute Ariake are the best choices. If you would like to fully enjoy the feel of a resort, the perfect place to stay is GRAND PACIFIC LE DAIBA with a great view of Tokyo Bay, Rainbow Bridge, “palette town,” and Tokyo Tower, from your room. From Hotel Nikko Tokyo, the view of Tokyo Tower over the Rainbow Bridge is stunning.

Disaster Prevention in Japan

Earthquakes, rain storms, fires…. In Japan, different disaster prevention measures are planned

against natural disasters. You might think “Disaster prevention sounds complicated,” but as a

matter of fact, there are many places in Japan where you can learn about disaster prevention

while having fun. Moreover, most of the amusement park-like facilities are free to enter, as

they are public facilities. Here are some leisure spots where you can have fun, but can also

learn about disaster prevention naturally.

Disaster Preparedness ItemsThere are two types of disaster preparedness items: ones for evacuation (or survival) and ones for living your life after survival. Considering your life-style, health condition, and any illness, it is im-portant to prepare appropriate items for yourself, using information from experts and people with disaster experience. Also, check out camping and climbing gear because it is often useful.

Examples of items that att.JAPAN rec-ommends you to bring with youWhistle, Penlight, Mask (also useful for cold protection), Medicine/Emergency Medical Kit (first-aid adhesive tape, etc.), Medicine-use Record, Emergency Food (chocolate, candy, etc.), Tissue Paper, Solar Battery, Toothbrush, Disposable Body Warmer (if winter).

Hot ItemsPortable Toilet: A variety of types, from one that quickly solidifies fluid and covers odor to one with water-wash.

Emergency Blanket: A windbreak, water-proof, and cold protection sheet made of ultra-thin materials. It is very light and just 10 cm by 10 cm in size when it is folded. When unfolded, it can cover your body.

Even though you don’t have special kits, you can use something available with a little ingenuity at such a time. Adapt to circumstances! For example…Plastic bags of supermarkets can be used for toi-lets when water is unavailable.

Plastic bottles can be materials to make a chair that is useful for protection from the cold ground.

For Your ReferenceMinimal Emergency Items to Take with You (on the Fire and Disaster Management Agency site)Personal seal, Bank Book, Cash, First-aid Box, Flashlight, Candle, Cigarette Lighter, Tin Opener, Knife, Gloves, Baby Bottle, Clothes, Radio, Battery, Helmet, Padded Headgear, Water, and Food. http://www.fdma.go.jp/html/life/sack.html (Japanese)http://www.fdma.go.jp/bousai_manual/e/too/tool.html (English)

Emergency Food Shown in Sona Area Tokyo (Check out giveaways for readers, too!)

The largest outdoor music festival in Japan, FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL ’13, took place at Naeba, Niigata Prefecture, for three days from July 26 through 28 as usual every year. This year, which marked the 17th anniversary, an ever larger variety of artists

participated. On the third day, in particular, musicians who do headliners of events held in other countries, such as “MUMFORD & SONS,” who came to Japan for the first time, “VAMPIRE WEEKEND,” and “THE CURE” in the finale, played on the GREEN STAGE. The weather during the festival was a bit rainy, but audiences were well prepared and comfortably enjoyed the exciting time. This is the real thrill of the FUJI ROCK experience: being immersed in great sounds and also in great nature. To enjoy such a fun-filled three days, fans come every year.

CURE」。

Kurokawa Onsen on the north side of Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, is one of the most popular hot spring

resorts in Japan. Surrounded by Oguni-sugi cedar trees in a mountainous area, this onsen was awarded two stars in the “Michelin Green Guide Japon” published in February 2009.

There are seven kinds of water sources, and experiencing so many different types of water in one hot spring resort is rare even in Japan, which

is blessed with a large number of hot springs. Traditional ryokan stand side by side along the valley of the Tanoharu River. Enjoy walking along stone steps and slopes around the town dressed in yukata, or light soft-cotton kimono! Trees have been planted around the town, and Kurokawa Onsen with a natural and cozy feel created by wooden buildings built under a com-mon standard will heal and relax you.

The town has two public bathhouses and most ryokan have open-air baths.

Visitors who buy a “Nyuto Tegata” pass can take a bath at any three ryokan in the town. The pass made of slices of cedar is sold at the office of Kurokawa Spa Hotel Association Information Center in the center of the town.

Student: Laetitia OgawaI was born in France and grew up there. I mar-ried a Japanese man. Because Japanese food is good for the health and my son and husband both like it very much, I want to master Japa-nese recipes.

Instructor: Kazuko KarasawaI learned cooking from my parents, who ran a Japanese restaurant, and my grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. As a housewife, I've been cooking for 20 years. I like cooking everyday, taking care of my family’s health.

Write the name of your loved one, or draw a heart,

in ketchup on your Omuraisu to win his/her love!

Cooking directions:Chicken rice: Mince the onion and slice the mushrooms including the stems. Cut the chicken into 1 to 2-cm cubes and season with salt and pepper.

Melt 3 tbsp of butter in a frying pan. Stir-fry the onion in the butter briey, cover to steam and then add the mushrooms. When the onion has become transparent, remove it from the pan and set aside. Add the rest of the butter to the frying pan, place the chicken skin side down, cook and then turn so both sides are cooked and season with salt and pepper.

Turn o the heat, add the onion, mushrooms, and ketchup to the pan and stir-fry briey to remove any extra moisture. Add the rice to the pan and mix well.

Scrambled egg:2 eggs per person, beaten and cooked separately for each scrambled egg. Crack 2 eggs into a bowl, beat well, add some salt, and mix. In a small frying pan, melt 1 tsp of butter, pour in the beaten egg, and spread to cover the entire surface of the pan.

Shaping:When the center of the egg “crepe” is half cooked, place the chicken rice on the egg along the center. Wrap the rice with the egg from both sides using chopsticks or a spatula, slide it in the pan away from you, and roll it onto a plate. Form the rice and egg into the shape of a rugby ball. Decorate with ketchup to taste.

Tips:- Salt-free butter is better for this dish.- Soft, freshly cooked rice is easily squashed when stir-fried so it is better to use rice cooked several hours before or left-over rice.- Brown rice is perfect for this dish as it is nice and rm, nutritious, and goes well with ketchup.- Mix a little tabasco into the ketchup to make an original sauce.

Rail 鐵路Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

主要有JR(Japan Railway Co., Ltd., 日本旅客鐵路)運行著,在這當

Japan Rail PassJapan Rail Pass allows you to use the whole JR system (including the Shinkansen) but is only sold outside Japan. 28,300 yen gets you a full 7 day ticket (adults).

For more info, check the Japan Rail Pass website:詳情請看JAPAN RAIL PASS的網站 www.japanrailpass.net

Bus 巴士 Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than travel-ing by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night.Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recom-mend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disem-bark prior to setting off.

Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 710 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.

In big cities, such as Tokyo and Osaka, the under and over ground train system is well organized and highly efficient accessing any and all parts of the cities. To avoid wasting time lining up for tickets and working out how to use the machines in different stations, it is highly recommended to purchase pre-paid cards.

You can cash traveler’s checks at many banks. Traveler’s checks can also be used at hotels, ryokan Japanese style ho-tels, and shops in big cities. Credit cards can be widely used in urban areas, but sometimes are not accepted at shops in rural areas.

Exchanging non-Japanese currency for yen can be carried out at international airports, and most major banks.

Japanese coin & paper currency in circulation

Public telephones can be found almost everywhere in Japan and most can be used to make domestic and international calls. Only 10 or 100 yen coins can be used but all telephones take pre-paid telephone cards – purchase in convenience stores for 500 or 1000 yen.If you use a calling card when you make an international call, it can reduce your calling rate.
