The principles and holograms of micro-acupuncture were discovered

by Dr. Dale and published in 11 monographs, principally in the

American Journal of Acupuncture from 1976 to 1999.

Dr. Paul Nogier, a physician in France discovered Auricular Therapy

and what he later called Auricular Medicine. Dr. Nogier also

discovered that the distribution of the auricular acupoints

holographically reiterated the anatomy of the body.

The ear points used in this Manual are identified and located by Terry

Oleson in his book, Auriculotherapy Manual: Chinese and Western

Acupressure is intended as an adjunct to, not a substi tute for, conventional

medical therapy. The information and methods set forth in this book reflect the

Introduction

I grew up a super achiever. In high school I was student bodypresident, co-captain of the football team, a class valedictorian andmaintained an A average. I won a government service scholarshipand football scholarship to USC where I was planning on a law anda political career. I was on top of the world and everything lookedgreat.

In my senior year, forty years ago, I began having shootingpains down my legs. I had injured my back playing football in highschool but didn’t know it. That pain turned my life upside down.Nothing had prepared me for the devastating pain and complete lossof everything I aspired to and loved. My aspirations in sports, law,politics, and social life came to a screeching halt with the intermittentand unexplainable pain resulting from my injury. I lost all myscholarships, my friends, and I flunked out of school. It was likehaving a rug pulled out from under you. I never knew when the painwould strike or what caused it. Sometimes the pain kept me in bed forweeks at a time, but eighteen different doctors could not tell me whatwas wrong. The pain led to depression, hopelessness, despair,drinking, and several times it was so bad I considered suicide. Whendrinking was the only thing that killed the pain, I entered therapy.Five years of psychotherapy was very interesting but I rememberasking, "How does all this create such intense pain? Why isn't anyoneelse here having the kind of pain I'm having?"

Ten years after my injury I finally realized that my pain wasnot psychological. I was diagnosed with a herniated disk in my backwhich I assumed I had hurt playing football. My back injury hadcaused the pain. Two back surgeries later the pain had changed butit was still intense and always lurking in the background ready tocompletely disable me. Finally after fifteen years of suffering, doctorssaid, “You have Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and there is notreatment but to learn to live with it.” AS is a form of rheumatoidarthritis characterized by inflammation and calcifying of the spine. Itis very painful and hard to diagnose. "Ha." It hurts just to write aboutthis time in my life.

When they said to learn to live with it, I began searching forother ways of healing, studying all kinds of diets, exercises, andmeditation. Eventually I focused completely on this healing quest.For five years I wandered the deserts of California participating inmore than forty different types of therapies. I just followed my heartand listened for my inner path of healing. By listening to my dreamsand inner guidance, by prayer, communion with nature, meditation,and following the flow, I found what I needed. I learned techniquesand developed tools that have worked for me and have helped others.

At one point in my search I realized that I had learned manyof the techniques I needed to heal myself. I only needed to applywhat I knew and to continue following my inner guidance. Goingback to the real world of work and family life I developed a tool forworking on my back (Stressaway Massager). It was for my own usebut as others requested products for themselves I began making moreof them. Many people got results I couldn't explain. Headaches woulddisappear; neck, shoulder, and back problems got better. I realizedthe Stressaway Massager was stimulating acupressure points whichled to spontaneous mysterious healings. Over time, these healings ofothers led me to change the design of the tool and develop other toolsto better stimulate the acupressure points. From the time when theidea for the first tool surfaced, I have been studying and listening forthe best ways to apply this information. The knowledge I havelearned in this quest is the basis of this unique system I call theStressaway Acupressure Program.

One night I reflected on the amount of pain I have had in mylife. I realized that had I not been so intensely affected I would nothave put my life energies into how to deal with pain. Without thepain I would not have developed the knowledge on how to deal withit. Without the pain I would not be as driven to help others learn thisknowledge. Without the pain I would not have developed thequestioning that drove me inward to understand myself. Without thepain I would not have made any connection with my higher spiritualself that gives me a feeling of connectedness and oneness witheverything around me. It has been the lemon that forced me to makelemonade. I can empathize with the pain of others. The Stressaway

Acupressure Program has made my pain meaningful. Otherwise, itwould have no meaning and no purpose. My mission of healing wasmade possible by my pain.

I have used this system for more than twenty years. The painis gone. When I do things that bring it back I am able to treat myselfsuccessfully without any outside help. Once I learned how to activatethe Healing Response, there was nothing that disturbed my health orsense of harmony with the world. As each bit of information and eachnew tool was revealed to me, the knowledge led me to understandthat I am a part of a larger meaning. There is a unity in all things thattranscends my individual sense of separateness. When I am out ofbalance with myself, I experience being out of balance with natureand the universe. My body reflects this loss of wholeness through asense of loneliness, pain, and disease. Being quiet and payingattention to my inner voice leads to the knowledge of what I must doto heal myself. As I reestablish my inner sense of balance andharmony, I begin feeling again my natural birthright -- a sense ofbeauty, oneness, and harmony with the universe.

Each of us must make this journey back to oneness andwholeness. No one else is going to heal us or fix us. Others can helpus along the way but the path we take is completely up to us. Theinformation in this book and the tools I have discovered can help usto heal ourselves. This book is a good map of one path to betterhealth and happiness -- a path that has been around for thousands ofyears.

PART ONE -- BASICS

Stressaway Acupressure Program

There are several unique features of this program that makeit unusual and exceptionally powerful. These particular factorsdeveloped over the last twenty years with the sole criteria of whatworks the best. This system of acupressure began with thedevelopment of the Stressaway massaging tool, so it seemed fittingto call it by its origins.

One of the main functions that acupressure has is to affect thebody’s ability to handle Stress through the autonomic nervoussystem.1 By constantly exposing ourselves to “fight or flight”situations, where we produce the chemicals for these events and thendo not respond in physical ways to deal with these chemicals webuild up stress reactions in our bodies. The Stressaway was namedfor the response that people reported, again and again, of feeling thestress leave their bodies. Some experts have estimated that 80 percentof our current illnesses relate to this factor.

Over the course of ten years, three other tools developedwhich expanded the effectiveness of the Stressaway Massager tostimulate and heal this imbalance of the autonomic nervous system.Time and again people testified that acupressure never worked forthem until they started using these tools. So tools are an importantpart of the program. Tools make it easier to stimulate the points withdeep effective pressure in a manner that fingers cannot do. Theymake it possible for self treatment to be effective.

At first we worked with massage with the Stressaway andbody acupressure points. Later we found we got the better results byalso working with points on the hands, feet and ears. So this systemincludes the use of eight different avenues of treating a symptom:(massage, body, head, back, ear, feet, hand and neuro-lymphaticrelease points.)

It was clear that ending symptoms was important but evenmore important was preventing the problems from happening. Soprevention is an integral part of the program.

As I studied different books on acupressure and acupuncture(they both use the same points) and tried to learn the theories behindthe systems it was very confusing. Many new terms were used thatdidn't make sense to me and when I tried to explain them to others Isaw blank stares so I translated all the information into more user-friendly terms, explanations and theory. Ease of understanding iscritical for a person to effectively apply this material for their ownpersonal use. Much of the difficult terminology came from easternexplanations of why this was working from their perspective. To meit became important to phrase things in western terms so I couldunderstand it better and share it with others.

This system was developed with an empirical emphasis.Something wasn't changed or added unless it was thoroughlyresearched and tested out. Research on eleven hundred people wasresponsible for expanding the system to treat eight areas and is oneof our main areas of interest. My web site encourages thedevelopment of research projects and will post any research that isdone in this field. Research is important for each person also becauseyou are given several points for different problems and you mustdecide which points work for you. You must also determine whichtool works best for your condition.

The need to experiment with each tool led me to put threetools and the books (this present book is a consolidation of my firstthree booklets) into one Acupressure Kit. Thanks to my mentor,Ralph Alan Dale, I have been able to summarize recommendedacupressure points for more than four thousand conditions from 250different experts. This list is found here under the “Formulas” and isposted to a computer program that will give you a free printout forthe condition of your highest interest. This computer program isavailable for your use and is one of the keys for this user-friendlysystem.

The possession of a list of points for your condition plus atool to easily stimulate the points makes it easy for you to do ityourself. I teach you how to do it for yourself and this Self-use iscritical for you to get the best results, especially because frequencyof use is an important factor. Self responsibility for your health is an

important factor in the success of this program. Self-use for selftreatment reduces the need for someone to always be around to fixyou. Eliminating that need reduces your medical costs tremendously.Besides not needing someone to fix you, I keep my cost as low aspossible so everyone can afford this system. So the word affordablestates this aspect of the program.

My own healing led me to develop spiritual qualities ofmyself that I had never tapped. (A more detailed description of myjourney to health is found on my web page under “My Story.”) Andthat growth helped me generate this program of acupressure. As Ihave developed this program, I see that healing ourselves does morethan make us feel better. It also puts us more in touch with our higherspiritual nature. There is a very understandable explanation for thisfact, which is a fascinating aspect of the Stressaway AcupressureProgram. So there is a strong spiritual aspect to this healing. Allthese different parts of the Stressaway Acupressure Program willbe touched on in this book.

Your Healing Response

Pain is a warning of danger and a way to alert us to fixdamaged parts of our body. Physical or emotional pain is animportant message for health and survival. In response to pain weproduce endorphins to numb the pain, increase the heart rate, changethe blood pressure, increase the flow of toxins from the damagedarea, and initiate a long series of internal healing processes. I call thisthe "Healing Response." Most of us take this process for granted.But, there is a revolution just ahead in medical science as we openthese avenues of self-healing. We are truly self-healing organisms,who possess capacities and potentials that we have only begun to tap.These tools and techniques will allow you to begin exploring thishealing process for yourself.

By creating a small injury, acupuncture tricks the body intothinking it has been damaged. In principle, this is very similar to ourwestern tradition of vaccinations. When acupuncturists insert aneedle, the body responds as if it has been cut. Most of the methodsused by acupuncturists (including acupressure) simulate some kindof damage. Acupuncturists have tools to simulate damage by cutting,pressure, electricity, heat, ice, lasers, lights, magnets, scratching, andchemicals.

Acupressure is the application of pressure on specific points(using the fingers or acupressure tools) to trick the body to begin thisHealing Response. Healing responses for a particular, localized paindoes not occur all over the body. We get the Healing Response juston the area of damage and along specific paths related to nerves andelectrical lines called meridians. For example, endorphins, the body'snatural painkillers, produce a numbing effect along these meridians.When you create pain by putting pressure on points, you areartificially starting all your body's healing mechanisms for thatspecific point and various symptoms related to that point. While thebody is trying to heal the point of pain, it also heals specificsymptoms. The more sensitive the points, and the more pain youcreate, the stronger the healing response (the body thinks it has beenhurt more) and the better your results. When I press a point on my

hand that is sore, the body is deadening the pain at the point in myhand, and along the meridian, going from my hand into the elbow,shoulder, neck and head. It is also producing the Healing Responseall along that meridian.

This concept was first seenwhen I rolled the Stressaway Massageralong a woman’s shoulder who had aheadache. When she said her headachewent away I was surprised. Later Irealized that I had stimulated animportant point on her shoulder(GB20) that produced a Healingresponse there and all over her head.You can see the line on this picture thatgoes through the shoulder and on to the side of the head, around theear and into the temple.

This picture also shows how rolling on the head with theStressaway massager sticks the body into thinking that you have hurtthe head. There are 86 points of the head that acupuncturist use forheadaches. Just rolling on the sensitive points of the head creates aHealing Response all over the head bringing more blood circulationand pain killing endorphins to this whole area and ending manyheadaches.

This helps us understand that if I have a pain in my neck I willlook for meridians that go through that area and stimulate thosemeridians. This has shown up most clearly when people have askedif this will help with cysts on different parts of their body. Key pointson the meridian which passes through the cysts have been sore butthose corresponding points on the other side of the body are not sore.

Research for the past three decades has documented the manydifferent ways the Healing Response is activated by acupressure.Initially it was thought that the autonomic nervous system (thoughtto be the seat of the Healing Response) was stimulated because of thenumber of favorable responses to treatments of diseases whoseorigins were considered to relate to disequilibrium in this area(essential arterial hypertension, peripheral arteriopathy, gastric

duodenal ulcers, bronchial asthma, etc.) This was supported byIonescu-Tirgoviste who documented the effect of the stimulation ofthese acupoints on certain physiological parameters: hemodynamicindices, gastric acid secretion and motility, endogenous insulinsecretion, nonadrenergic modulation of pain sensitivity,1 etc. Therelationship between acupoints and blood vessels with rich autonomicendings, as well as the lower electrical resistance of the skin atacupoints supports the hypothesis that the acupoints may beconsidered “autonomic concentration areas.” 2

The way the autonomic system heals pain is best described byTerry Oleson in Auriculotherapy Manual, “Most pain problems aredue to myofacial pain related to chronic restimulation of sensoryneuron feedback from a muscle in spasm that reactivates interneuronsin the spinal cord to restimulate motorneuron excitation, which leadsto more neural impulses going to the muscle, causing the muscle tostay in spasm. Muscles do not stay in spasm without a neuron causingthem to contract. Auricular stimulation” (one aspect of theStressaway Acupressure Program) “serves to disrupt the sensoryneuron-motor neuron feedback loop which keeps a muscle incontraction.” 3

Another way of saying this is, “The feelings of sleepiness andrelaxation that people feel when stimulated through the StressawayAcupressure Program is because the body activates the HealingResponse through the autonomic nervous system. In effect it ishealing or taking away past stresses to the body, i.e., it is taking theStress-away.”

One key to making acupressure work is to know which pointscreate the Healing Response for a particular problem. Knowing whatthe problem is determines which meridians are related and whichpoints might help. If a point that relates to a problem is sore, pressingthe point will create the Healing Response for that problem. Thediagrams in this book contain the points most recommended andreported by more than two hundred and fifty acupuncturists.

The points that work best and how long it takes to get resultsdiffer with each individual and will relate to how well you apply theprinciples defined here. Most often, only a few points will be needed

to get results (even though many more are listed) but you mustdetermine which points produce the best results. Some people aremore sensitive to acupressure and will get a quicker response thanothers, and will need to use fewer points.

As I demonstrated the Stressaway Acupressure Program toolsat different events using micro-system pressure points, more than20,000 people consistently reported very positive results in painreduction over the course of several years. Since there are fewscientific studies supporting the hypotheses that there are miniaturerepresentations of the body in the ears, hands and feet, I decided toquantify the results of these acupressure demonstrations. Whenpeople came to my booth, I asked them if they were in pain, and ifthey were, would they participate in a small study? Here is some dataI gathered to determine how well the Stressaway AcupressureProgram tools are working. It also tells us how many people canexpect to get positive results with these tools.

Different micro systems in the ears, hands and feet are said tocorrespond to different body parts. There is a miniature mappingof the body represented in these external parts. By stimulatingthese micro system points with acupressure I wanted todetermine if there was a reduction of pain. I also wanted todetermine if people could expect results with self treatment. Threedifferent sets of data were gathered to test the above hypotheses. Firstwe asked: "Are the pressure points that correspond to the pain sore?"This was measured in two different ways. In the first, a point wasdescribed that related to their condition and they were asked to verifythat it was truly sore. In the second method, we asked them to rankthe soreness of two different points. One point was a control and theother matched their problem condition. Next we asked, "Does briefstimulation of this point give any pain relief?" This would be a thirdindication that the pressure point matches that specific part of thebody.

I measured more than eleven hundred people at severaldifferent fairs. Pain levels were measured using a visual analog scale(numbered scale) before and after a short treatment. Frequency,intensity of symptoms, and costs of medications and other treatments

were measured. I, or the participating person, applied pressure on thesore points for less than three minutes.

In the first study, sore points related to problem areasidentified by participants 99.8 percent of the time. The second studycomparing 92 control points and real points found differences thatwere statistically significant (p<.01). The last study showed areduction of pain averaging 78 percent within three minutes. Thechart below indicates percentage of pain reduction levels recorded foreach different category. In three minutes 37 percent of the group wastotally free of pain; 43 percent were free of more than 50 percent oftheir pain; and, 2.5 percent reported no change in pain levels. Sixty-five percent of the people with headaches (387) were completely painfree.

All three sets or data in this pilot study support the hypothesisthat there is a miniature mapping of the body represented inthese external parts and that stimulation of these points withacupressure results in a reduction of experienced clinical pain.These positive results, together with the dramatic testimonials(Appendix E) of people who have used the Stressaway

Acupressure Program, support the belief that acupressure, withthese tools, offers an effective and cost-saving method oftreatment that is worth studying.

The most-recent development in this effort to documentresults is the potential this information has for prevention and healthscreening. This research found that soreness on the micro systemsreflects the level of health of different parts of the body. One diseasethat needs better screening methods is cancer. Since there is usuallyno pain associated with early-stage cancer, we don't know we havea problem until the cancer is more advanced and therefore moredifficult to treat.

Some women who were experiencing health problems in thebreast saw the pictures of the breast points on top of the foot. (Page84). They asked to see if those parts were sore. Points on the handand feet that relate to the breast were significantly sorer (p< .o5) forwomen who had cancer, or fibrocystic changes (benign lumps in thebreast) than for women who had no such problems. Can thisinformation be used as a pre-screening for breast cancer (andother types of cancer) and perhaps augment the mammographyin many cases? Could it eventually reduce the need formammography? The Acu-Ki Institute is conducting research on thisquestion.

Current medical examination procedures and diagnostic testsin the medical industry are being questioned today. One studyrecently found that 20% of the patients who died in ICU were mis-diagnosed and not treated for the condition that caused their deaths.4Though current research has not documented enough the use ofacupressure for diagnosing problems the potential is great and thecost is minimal. Some of the research on diagnosis using these microsystems is presented by Oleson5 in Appendix C. As stated in ourresearch 98.8% of the subjects felt sensitive pressure points thatrelated to their problems. Sore points on the micro systems indicatea problem with the corresponding organ or body part. This statistichas been personally duplicated in working with thousands of otherusers of this method. There is more information on how to use this asa diagnostic tool in our principle section.

This and other controlled, long-term studies are now beingconducted to verify that people are getting lasting results. These studies dealt only with pain because we do not have thefunds to measure the effects of these tools on diseases that requirelengthy healing times and more extensive follow-up. There weremany individual cases of relief of coughs, colds, nausea, infections,allergies, arthritis, paralysis, and fatigue, to list just a few, but notenough to document in the short time available. The World HealthOrganization lists general health conditions that are known torespond to acupuncture (or acupressure). Most of these problems arelisted in this book. We also have more than four thousand conditionson our computer system.

These results and others are confirming what medicalhistorians have documented in cultures all over the world. Mild,short-term pain reduces more severe pain problems. People cancontinue to treat and get results for pain and illnesses. The threecritical factors needed are: intensity of pain stimuli (correct tools),accuracy of finding the correct point (provided in our manuals), andfrequency of stimulation (up to each individual). One of the mostimportant features of this research is to answer the question, “Willthis acupressure program improve my condition?” If others havegotten these excellent results why can’t you? Another importantquestion that research must answer is the areas for which acupressureworks best. That is one of the goals of our web page.

Stressaway Acupressure Program Principles

For the best results it is important to understand the followingprinciples of Stressaway Acupressure:

No pain, no gain. You are looking for sore points. If a pointis sore, it needs work. If a point is not sore, you do not need to treatit. Finger pressure will work, but most people get a better HealingResponse using acupressure tools because they are sharper and allowmore pressure to be applied. Also some points cannot be stimulatedwith the fingers like they can with the tool. The sharp point of theAcu-Ki can stimulate the points of the ear much better than the fingerbecause some of these points are very small. It took me ten years tolearn how to work with the ear (Auriculotherapy) effectively. If apoint is very sore, press only as hard as you can tolerate. You mustbe the judge. Light pressure for a longer period will give you thesame results. Some people who are larger or less sensitive thanothers, may need more pressure to activate the healing response andvery sensitive people may get a healing response just by holdinglightly the points. If a point is not sore, study the diagrams to be sureyou have located the right spot. If you bruise easily, find theacupressure points for bruising and see the caution section.

Repeat, repeat, repeat. Treatments have a cumulative effect.Sometimes lasting results are immediate, but most often it takes awhile. Each time you activate the Healing Response it brings thesystem closer to normal. If you do not get a response quickly, you canincrease the frequency of treatment. Three or four times a day or evenonce an hour is OK. You cannot overdose. If the pain comes back, itdoes not mean that the treatments are not working. This is normal;eventually however, you will reach a point where the pain does notreturn. Some acupuncturists report treating people 160 times andsome think using needles is three times as effective as acupressure.But, you can repeat Acupressure treatments at no additional cost.

As you repeatedly stimulate the points over time, the nervoussystem learns a new response to the problem. Sometimes it is liketeaching puppies a new trick. At first you must coach them frequentlyand then one day they know the new trick. Sometimes this is learned

for life, but most often you will need to remind them of the trick youwant them to remember. As you know, each puppy is different andthe more difficult the trick the more you must work to get the learnedresponse. Long-term results with acupressure depend on repeated use.If you have difficulties getting results, be patient and keep trying.

A health food store owner reported that I had shown her onepoint on her ear to press for TMJ at a large distributor conference.She did that point once an hour for one minute and at the end oftwenty days the pain was completely gone. She had suffered for tenyears and had tried all the most expensive treatments and nothing hadworked.

The specific sequence we recommend consists of threedifferent stages.

Phase One: Get rid of the pain. At least three times a day doacupressure treatments using all the points you have identified(including five or more systems). Treat for 30 seconds to a minute.You can treat longer (two to three minutes) but not more than 10minutes for extremely painful conditions. (For more information onhow long and how hard to press for what type of condition seeAppendix A.) Learn the points so you do not have to refer to thepictures. During this phase use any two of the prevention routines forat least five minutes each day and whenever you have a free momentfor treatment. (See section on Prevention). Do this phase until thepain or symptom (infection, cough, etc.) stays away.

Another sequence strategy is to treat the points until the painleaves. You may have selected eight points that relate to a headache.In this strategy the first time you stimulate the points for one minuteeach you feel half the pain has gone. Then you would treat the samepoints again and you may feel 75 percent of the pain has gone.Treating the same points again may have gotten rid of all the pain. Ifthe pain returns, you'll know it's time to use the treatment sequenceagain. Over time, the pain usually will stop for longer and longerperiods. Be careful with this because if you do not do any of the otherphases the problems may return with their original intensity.

Phase Two: Get rid of the sore acupressure points. At leastonce a day, treat any of the sore body points you have. Also work any

one of your eight miniature systems (Micro-Systems) of the body(ear, feet, hands, head, or back) once a dayfor about five minutes and whenever youhave a free moment. Working here means toroll on that system with one of theappropriate tools. To work the head, youroll the Stressaway over all the parts of thehead looking for and focusing on any sorepoints. To work the back, you either usethe Stressaway against the wall or the Back-eze massaging up and down two to threeinches at a time and then moving the tool so

you have done thewhole back. You work the hands and feet byrolling with the Happy-Feet or Acu-Ki. Theear is worked by using either of these twotools, preferably the Acu-Ki because it is notquite as sharp, and pressing on different partsof the front and back of the ears. Usewhichever tool you have and it will stimulatethe whole body and treat any energyimbalance of your system in a similar waythat we have described working with your

foot on page 22.Phase Three: Keep your system balanced. Use the

treatment sequence or a few of the critical points whenever you havea spare moment. Work any one of the four micro systems at leastevery other day. The easiest one for me is just to roll the Acu-Ki inmy hands on a regular basis while working on the computer ortalking on the phone. If you want more energy and better health,work one of the micro systems each day or whenever you feel tiredor under stress. Also, check out the specific points listed under bodyenergy and health. Stress, a re-injury, muscle overuse, or normaldaily life will sometimes bring the pain back to warn us ofimbalances. Move back to the other more-intense phases as needed.

Scale of response. This principle relates to the cumulative

effect. First, if the points are sore, you are on the right spots. Somepeople report that the points become very sore at first, so go slowly.You may get a lessening of pain or dis-ease with treatment. The painwill go away for short periods, then for longer periods, and finally thepain will stay away and the pressure points will lose their soreness.This is most often the case. Sometimes you must do severaltreatments to get any effect. This is the reason most acupuncturistsusually schedule six to twelve treatments to get results. I am a largeperson and I found that it took me about four months to get completefreedom from pain using the acupressure points but I had toovercome twenty years of pain.

Prevention. You can fix a tire by putting more air in it butthat is only a temporary fix. The same is true with the imbalances inour body's energy system that underlie all illnesses. Stress in our liveswill cause the points to become sore again, so stimulate themregularly. This heals imbalances caused by the stress we normallyaccumulate. Distressed areas of the body or out-of-balance parts arereflected in the energy system (acupressure points) of the body aspainful points. All parts of the body that are miniature representationsof the whole body can be used. Stimulating these points may preventpain and illness before it occurs. Any sore points on theseminiaturizations will activate the Healing Response for the stressedarea. Roll the Happy-Feet tool on all parts of the foot to work outany soreness. The Acu-Ki tool is easiest to use for prevention byrolling between the hands and some people enjoy the sharper effectsof the Happy-Feet rolling in the hands. Your Stressaway Massageris the best tool for rubbing the head, which is also a miniaturizationof the body. If you have a partner it also works wonders on yourback. The Back-Eze will give you the deepest stimulation for theminiature system of the back. The body point S36 is your mostpowerful point for prevention of illnesses. It increases your energyand may add years to your life. Ancient texts site it as the mostimportant point for increasing your life span. Add it to all yourtreatments and use it daily.

People continually tell us how energized they feel when usingthese different programs. If you work with these tools only to get rid

of pain or illness, you are missing the most powerful potential benefitof acupressure -- prevention of illness, better health, a sense ofaliveness and connectedness with others and the universe.

A few good points. The goal is to find the fewest pointspossible that give you effective results. Treating the sorest pointsusually gives the best results. But, it is critical to find the correctpoint. This is why we have developed such good diagrams. Bylooking in the general area and finding the tender spot you will knowyou are on the point related to your problem. A computer listing ofthe points for your condition comes free with the purchase of thisbook. Several points are offered so you can choose the best ones foryou. You choose which is best for you by seeing which is sorestand/or which one gives you relief as you stimulate it. Whenever youare stimulating a point pay attention to what is happening to yoursymptom. You may find only one point is needed to get relief. Payattention more to the points that are far removed from the organ orplace of distress. Sometimes stimulating these points will give youthe most benefit.

A free moment. You do not have to use all of the pointsrecommended. Using just a few of them when you have a freemoment can be effective. Work points while watching TV, in a movietheater, waiting in a line or for an appointment, in class, in meetings,in your car, before going to bed -- anytime. I even use mine while I’mwaiting for things to download from the internet or while I’mthinking of what to write on my computer.

Diagnosis. You can determine what part of the body is indistress by looking for sore points on the micro systems of the ear,hands or feet. These points cannot tell you what type of problem thereis, but their soreness will indicate that there is a problem in that organor part of the body. When working with something like a headache,we know that frequently they are caused by neck, shoulder or backproblems. By finding which one of these places are sore (using themicro systems described later) and stimulating the points of thatsystem you begin treating the underlying cause. Dale describes howto work with these techniques of diagnosis.6

Micro-Acupuncture

Ancient acupuncturists identified parts of the body that weresmall or miniature models of the whole body. To date, 18 differentminiature systems have been found. Dale7 refers to these systems as"Micro-Acupuncture systems" (small systems), in which a specificpart of the body, such as the ear, sends reflexes to main meridians andparts of the body. In our recent research, each of the eleven hundredpeople we asked verified that there was a sore spot on their ear, hand,or foot that matched a sore point on their body. As we put pressure onthese points, we had a 78 percent reduction of pain, usually in lessthan three minutes. How does this work?

Recent research in quantum physics8 shows us one model thatmay explain these phenomena. After taking a picture with a laserbeam, lab scientists broke that picture into many small parts. Whena beam shines thorough one small part, the entire image of the wholestill appears, although in less refinement and detail. Thus, each smallpart contains information about the entire image. You are alreadyfamiliar with the idea that a seed has all the parts of a whole tree. Asthe tree grows, all the parts manifest. In the same way, as we growfrom a small cell (which has all the maps for the whole) all the partsare representations of the whole.

This information gives us a way to heal the whole by treatingthe smaller part. If I have a problem with my foot and I'm not surewhat it is, I work with my ear. I find the part of my ear that is theholographic image of my foot and see if it is sore. If it is, I then putpressure on my ear with my Acu-Ki. If it is the correct point to helpmy foot, I will feel a sharp, needle-like pain. The body records thepain in my ear. As it produces the healing response to fix the damagethere, it will produce the Healing Response also in my foot. Thisbook illustrates (in detail) the ear, hands, and feet because theyrespond so well to these tools, and they are easy to work with. All ofthe research results reported in this book were produced with thepoints illustrated in this book.

Macro-Acupuncture

According to Ralph Alan Dale, the Macro-Acupuncturesystem, (large system), is the "classical system, with pointsthroughout the whole system or body." Dr. Dale has taught andtreated thousands in the practice of acupuncture, including me. In hisbook, The Acupuncture Comprehensive Prescription Index,9 hesummarized points used by more than 200 acupuncturists. Thismassive document lists thousands of symptoms for professionals andis the basis of most points recommended in my materials. The mainbody of this book is the listing of the acupoints for differentconditions which begins on page 113.

Many practitioners use different points for the same symptom.For example, more than 163 points are used for headaches. I haveselected the points that are most important and the easiest to find.Sometimes one point will work. In other circumstances it is necessaryto use more points. If you are not getting a response within a month,write us and we will send you a list of more points relating to yoursymptom.

Acupressure is a branch of acupuncture. The core ideas,which are the same as acupuncture, are as follows: Energy flowswithin the body along lines known as meridians. There are 14 mainmeridians and many subsidiary ones, (some associated with an organof the body). The state of a person's health is dependent on thesystem's balance of energy and the total level of energy. Whentreating a disease or condition, pressure is placed on classicalacupuncture points located on the meridians. This restores thebalance of energy flow, and so can restore the patient to health. Thepoints on the meridians that make up the Macro-Acupuncture Systemare located all over the body. The flow of energy and balance withinthe body is a very complex process, but a simplified analogy makesit a little clearer.

Our body is like the wiring system in a house. When a toastershorts out, it causes the wiring to get hot, because it cannot handle theextra electricity. A fuse will blow, keeping the wires fromoverheating and burning down the house. Our bodies have

complicated wiring and communication systems that use electricalenergy. Any injury or strain on the system requires more energy. Wecannot replace fuses in our body, like in our home, so we make thewires or meridians bigger. In this expanded mode they can handle theextra demand on the system from any damaged parts. We make iteasier for energy to flow by chemically reducing the resistance so thesystem can handle more electrical charge. When we measure thepoints connected to problem areas, we actually find that theirresistance is lower than normal. This is a result of an inner chemicalchange. We also find that these points may become warmer than theywere before the problem occurred. These meridians in our bodybecome more sensitive at the points where they come close to thesurface.

So, sore points relate to a problem, just as a hot wire in myhome might relate to a defective toaster. When we replace a fuse andfix the problem at home the system is fixed. In our bodies, however,we sometimes still find sensitivity on the points that relate to theproblem even after the injury is repaired. This happens because thechannels have remained enlarged. Extra energy flowing through thesechannels can destroy the balance of the whole system. Activating theHealing Response will help these "wires" return to normal and restorebalance to our system. If these "wires" remain expanded, the wholesystem is weakened and we are susceptible to the problem condition.This is the main reason for focusing on prevention and not justsymptom relief.

Imbalances in this communication system can become verycomplicated. Since we are a closed system when we need energy fora problem, we borrow from another system by constricting the flowof energy in that system. Chinese Medicine views long-termimbalances in these systems as the underlying cause of disease. Forthis reason regular balancing tuneups are usually a part ofacupuncture treatments and are an important part of this program aswas described in the Principles section. A good general preventionformula (sequence of points for treating a condition) for body energyand health is found on page 108.

This complex meridian system in the body is reflected in each

of the smaller Micro systems. These pictures, produced by Dale10,show where the body meridian points for the Lung meridian arefound in the foot Micro System. Many people know about theminiature representations of the body in these areas, but few knowhow the meridians are also reflected there. An understanding of howthe body meridians flow in these miniature systems is critical tobalancing our body. Sore points tell us when and where there are

imbalances in our system that will respond to the Healing Response.These sore acupressure points are also reflected as sore points on thefoot (and other Micro-Systems). By using the four tools of theStressaway Acupressure Program we now have a method ofcompletely balancing our energy systems. Just by rolling the Happy-Feet on the bottom of the feet you can activate the Healing Responsethroughout the body.

The sore points on your foot reflect the sore acupressurepoints of the body and imbalances of the meridian system. Theeasiest ones to work with are described in the prevention section.People report being restored to good health just by working with one

of these systems, such as the foot. Many of these reports concernproblems for which western medicine has not helped.

This knowledge and these tools will become importantcomponents of preventive medicine. Dale11 states, "Even moresignificant are the possible implications for the usefulness of bothmacro- and micro-acupuncture as preventive medical modalities. Wenow know that imbalances in the meridian system of the body can becorrected or modified by macro- or micro-meridian therapy. Thereseems to be mounting evidence that there may be an importantrelationship between the sustenance of imbalances and the onset ofdisease, and conversely, between the maintenance of balance in themeridian system and immunity to disease. Regular periodiccorrection of pre-pathological energy imbalances might be developedas a basic health maintenance program in future medical practice."

Acupressure seems to induce the body to produce naturalsubstances similar to many chemically-produced prescription drugs.Some theorists believe acupressure works precisely because of theproduction of these substances. Some believe that the use of chemicalsubstances will greatly reduce the value of any therapy. Thesesubstances inhibit the body's ability to heal itself.

There are many theories about how acupressure works.Researchers and scientists are now beginning to confirm what theancients have long known: that there is a healing power within eachof us, and that we can learn to use at least some of this power to helpourselves and others. Though researchers have focused on differentareas of interest, they all seem to center on different aspects ofhealing and homeostasis, or balance.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) focuses on balancingthe energy and on the level of energy in the body. Practitioners aretaught to focus on the underlying cause of the disease (energyimbalances), rather than to fragment healing by treating only thesymptoms. They determine what to treat by looking at things like thetongue color and texture, and analyzing the pulses. When I firststarted learning this system, it was very complicated and hard tolearn. It takes many years to learn and is a very good system ofprevention and balancing. When I learned that I could work with

specific symptoms that were bothering me instead of having to learnthe whole system, I immediately began treating my pain.

Qi flows through the meridian system in the body. There aretwelve meridian channels measured with the pulses in TCM. Inaddition there are two main channels (up the front of the body andthe back) and a number of extra channels. There are more than athousand points that come close to the surface of the body that reflectthis complicated network of flowing energy. If you imagine a largefield or plantation that you are trying to irrigate with all thesechannels you can get a feel for what is happening. Everything workswell as long as the water flows smoothly. When we have stress ordamage to one part of the field, it needs more water that must betaken from somewhere else in the system. Water ends up flowingmore in some parts than others. Over time if this flow stays out ofbalance we end up having parts of the system dying or becomingdiseased because of too much or not enough water. If I try to carry inwater to fix a dying plant without repairing the flow of water to thatplant I will always have weakness there.

The whole TCM philosophy of treating the underlying causesby keeping this system balanced is based on this analogy. We cannotsee the places where the water or energy is too much or not enough,but we can feel the points that are tender to the touch which reflectsany imbalance. Just like the hot wire that goes to a defunct toaster, Ican tell where there is a problem by looking for sore points. Bystudying the points recommended for different dis-ease I can find thesore points that reflect too much or not enough energy flowing in thesystem. Then by systematically using any combination of the sixsystems (foot, hand, ear, head, back or body points), I can get thesystem balanced. Prevention is the cornerstone of this subtle andpowerful program.

When I first studied with Ralph Alan Dale he said many ofthe refinements of the more advanced Traditional Chinese Medicinewere valid but people were able to get very good results just byknowing the points and applying pressure. This system is called theformula school which emphasizes finding the points that work andusing them. By applying pressure moderately, (not-too-long sedation,

and not-too-short tonification but kind of in between see appendix A)people can get good results. The reason he stated was that the bodytakes the energy from the outside stimulus and applies it where it isneeded. Outside energy is like turning on a hose that flushes waterinto a channel that is not flowing well. Once the system starts flowingagain it can heal the defective parts.

The results I have seen support this statement. I am amazedat the stories that come back to me of people who have taken thisinformation, applied it to their condition, and achieved miraculousresults. If you can afford it, I recommend consulting with a trainedacupuncturist or specialist in the different microsystems likereflexology or auriculotherapy for any long-term, serious illness. Youcan continue using this program of self-help and working with themto accelerate your healing. See what works for you.

One lady asked me if this would help for chronic fatigue andchemical sensitivity. She had spent a $1000 for acupuncturetreatments and wasn’t sure she felt any different. I said it was wortha try, so she got the kit. She started working with the ten points thatwere recommended for the ten conditions that bothered people mostoften. (see page 108) She reported getting better results with thissystem than with the $1000 she had spent on acupuncture.

Another person I worked with said he had receivedacupuncture for tennis elbow but had not received any benefit. Onesimple treatment with the ear, foot and some macro acupoints and hewas raving about how great he felt.

If I know that I have a slow leak that might soon result in aflat tire, it is sometimes necessary to just fill the tire with more airuntil I have time for a proper repair. As I work with small repairs, I learn more about the generalworkings of my body and how I interact with all the levels of myspiritual, mental, emotional, and physical being. Learning about theparts gives me more understanding of the whole. As I fix the differentparts, they have an effect on the whole also. Low power lasers, magnets and electricaldevices are systems that work for some people. If you use yourfingers, your costs are the least but you may be missing some of theeffectiveness of the sharp points. The small lasers have the advantagethat they don’t hurt but you don’t know if you are on the exact spotthat is related to your problem. Some studies have shown the samewith electrical devices but some people get a good response. Whenyou move up to magnets, you are not experiencing any pain from thestimulation but sometimes your costs are much higher.

Spirituality

There is a spiritual nature to this program. As I mentioned inmy introduction, during my healing process, I developed differentaspects of my spiritual nature that had been dormant. Mostly, thiswas the ability to be quiet and listen within for that inner guidance tomy own needs for healing. When I read some of the Chineseliterature I see references to spiritual terms like “evil” and the “devil”and “connection to the universe “which I ended up interpreting formy own understanding as “healthy” and “unhealthy” and terms likethat. Maybe they discovered an important aspect of healing that wein this country don’t think about much.

Dale12 explores the important spiritual connection ofacupuncture in our lives. “Acupuncture is based upon an ancientChinese concept of (w)holism.13 This concept views human beingsnot only in relation to our integral totality of body, mind, and spirit,but also as microcosmic expressions of a universe whosecharacteristics are inherent in every organism and in every process.Health is viewed as the maintenance of harmony between us and thisuniverse while illness is an expression of disharmony.”

“The most fundamental biologic expression of this harmonyor disharmony with the universe is the relative balance or imbalanceof that primordial energy which the Chinese called Qi or Chi. (Ki inJapanese). The eastern Indians (India) call it "Prana". The Mayanscall it "Gaia". And of course, Luke Skywalker calls it "The Force".A free and balanced flow of Qi in the body expresses harmony andhealth while a blockage of this energy indicates illness. Qi travelsalong certain pathways called meridians.”14 This Qi is thought to bethe force that connects us to the universe.

“Who are we?” This is a question that has been asked bymystics and philosophers for ages. And how does this Qi work? Justa few years back Michael Talbot wrote “the Holographic Universe”where he talks about this question. He believes that the universe ismade up of a series of complicated holograms or separate butconnected realities. Many of these realities are miniaturizations ofeach other. He talks about the miniaturizations in the body referred

to by Dale1 and goes beyond that to asking how they are connected. This discussion all made sense to me was when he talks

about how “intentionality” is a critical aspect of our spiritual being.Not only should we ask “Who are we” but we should be dealing withthe question “Why do we do the things we do? When he and otherstried to go to the root of where all actions begin, they tried tounderstand where in our body there may be some activity that wouldindicate the “intention to do something.”

What they found was, when I think of moving my hand thereis some place that originates that thought. In a number of experimentsthey found that there is electrical activity on the very top of the headthat seems to precede any movement or action. He also proposed thatsince the Universe is structured like a hologram that it could bepossible that we are connected with other aspects of ourselves or theUniverse through this portal or connection. This could be the sourceof our spiritual guidance. Although we haven’t done much in researchin this country on the nature or consciousness or thought there is along tradition in the east about why we do what we do.

The eastern tradition refers to this spot on the top of the headas the “Crown Chakra.” This Crown Chakra is one of a number ofenergy centers that come together in the center of the body that isclaimed to hold life patterns and energies that determine how werespond to situations in our lives. Some who can see these energysystems claim that they are the guidelines for our spiritual work onthis level or plane. Blockages in different systems will determine howwe live our lives by how we react to lessons in our lives. When thesesystems are open and the energy is free-flowing we see manypeople who are very spiritual and who are considered by the norm tobe manifesting many of the spiritual goals that we aspire to as aspecies.

These Chakras are tied intimately with the other energysystems of meridians found in acupressure. The balance of theChakras is closely tied in with the balance of the other meridiansystems in our body. When I am in pain or having some kind ofdisease that I am working with, the meridian system is thought to beout of balance and not flowing freely. The more serious the problem,

the more this energy system will be out of balance. Since the Chakrasystem’s functioning relates to the other meridian systems, theChakra system will also be more dysfunctional.

Although this is all speculation, this model was interesting tome. When we balance our meridians to deal with the underlyingcauses of disease in our bodies, are we speeding our spiritualdevelopment? Part of the difficulty medical and scientific people inthis country had with accepting acupuncture was because it wasalways cloaked in some kind of mysticism of the Orient. They mayhave learned with time how intertwined all these energy systemswere with their concepts of consciousness and our spiritual natures.Perhaps when we fully understand this aspect of acupressure it willhave an effect on our understanding of our spiritual relation to theUniverse.

Before I became interested in this part of my healing, Istudied Jungian archetypical visualizations found in the Egyptianpyramids that helped the initiates become more balanced and todevelop their spiritual qualities. There were three symbols that werefound on the walls of the pyramids that have been used in manyhistorical settings to represent man’s connecting with God or man’shigher spiritual nature. These three symbols are the equal-sided cross,the triangle and the circle with a dot in the middle. They are allsymbols for balance and the supreme goal of all balancing techniquesseems to be that connection to or Unity with God we all aspire to.How to work with these symbols is found in “my story,” on our website www.stress-away.com.

Some people have said they don’t like working with anythingother than their hands for stimulating acupressure points because theylose the energy connection. Our excellent research results shouldindicate we are not losing any healing ability with the tools. Therewas another experience that gave me some insight into how the toolsmay be working. I am not very psychic or sensitive so I can onlyreport what someone else saw and reported to me.

While I was showing a new therapist how the tools worked Iran my hand over the Happy-Feet showing the curved ridges. Shesaid, “Wow! Does that happen all the time?” I asked what she meant?

She said, “There is bright blue energy coming out the ends and allaround the ridges. That is amazing.”

Who knows what that is but another experience made meeven more aware that something could be happening that is uniquehere. I was selling at an Antique Fair in Raleigh, N.C. This lady cameup looking at the Acu-Ki for a while -- turning it over in her hand andfeeling it and then asked, “Who designed this?” I told her I had. Sheasked if I did channeling and I said, “I’m not very good at it.” Shethen went on to explain, “This is not something that you just came upwith. It is a channeled piece of information. The “Keys of Enoch”speak of the use of pyramidal forms that will be used to connect toother realms of reality for healing. Get the book and read up on it.This is very interesting.”

When I found my copy of the book there were several picturesthat looked very close to the design of the Acu-Ki. Two quotes werevery interesting related to those designs. “When the blue-whitepyramids of the higher frequency interface with light domains ofsingular sun systems, one level of intelligence is able to relate toanother.” In another place, “The purpose of the multidimensionalpyramidal combinations is to connect one planetary realm with otherplanetary realms in the same consciousness time cell.”15

During my healing quest I frequently asked for higherguidance and direction to deal with my health problems. Much of mytime in that quest was spent developing a higher connection to ahealing power outside of my normal consciousness. This seems to beanother reflection of that link. Many of you have seen the Auracamera at different kinds of shows. A couple of years ago I had mypicture taken and it came out with a solid blueish aura all around me.Could this be from the use of these forms in my healing work? Theperson said what the picture showed was a very peaceful, spiritualperson. The use of Stressaway Acupressure helps build a connectionwith the spiritual parts of our nature.

Another interesting aspect of this particular reference to “TheKeys of Enoch,” was how connected I felt with the book. It is a verytechnical book with interesting spiritual insights. A few gems that Iconnect with that relate to this work include: “Jesus shows how the

My whole journey is reflected with the logo on the front ofmy book explained earlier. The bird represents the striving forperfection through balance of the body, mind and soul (reflected inthe triangle) which brings unity with God (the circle with a dot inmiddle). This symbol has been the main part of my spiritualvisualizations since 1976. The same symbols, in a slightly modifiedform, are on the cover of Keys of Enoch. Coincidence, or is someoneguiding me to study this text more? Who knows?

In my healing journey I have learned that things that seem tobe a coincidence never really are. There is an order to things that wecan see when we are balanced.

PART TWO -- WORKING THE POINTS

Finding and Using the Points

Finding the right point can be very confusing becausedifferent authors recommend different points for the same condition.To add to the confusion, a single author may list between 20 and 30points per condition. There are 163 different points recommended forheadaches that are found in the literature.

We've eliminated this confusion by taking only the consensuspoints (agreed upon important points) from hundreds of top expertsin the field of Acupuncture. (See the Acupuncture ComprehensivePrescription Index by Ralph Allen Dale.16) Remember alsoacupuncture and acupressure use the same acupoints. So, for eachcondition listed in this book, you will find only those points that theexperts agree on. Some points are hard to find and you can’t easilyreach by yourself. Since we emphasize self treatment, if a point ishard to find and can’t be stimulated easily with one of the tools, youshould leave this point out of your initial treatments. Use it later, withthe help of another person, if the easy points do not give you results.Illustrations of the points and written descriptions are listedalphabetically. Some points are not defined because the illustrationis clearer than a definition. The points, used most frequently, that youmay want to learn have more detailed illustrations in the table ofpoints.

Acupressure Measurements

The measurements of acupressure relate to the body inch. One“body inch” or “cun” equals one thumb width at the base of thefingernail.. The width of four fingers at their widest point is equal tothree body inches. The thumb width of the person being treatedshould always be used. These measurements are approximate.

When you find the general area on your skin, gently probewith your Acu-Ki until you find that point which gives you a "funnybone" feeling, or is sensitive, tender and sore. Then press hardenough to make the point hurt. A steady pressure is easiest and whatis usually used. Some people use alternating pressure for five secondson and five seconds off, for the time you stimulate the point.Sometimes none of the points are sore for me. I just work the pointsthat seem to give relief. For some conditions relief is immediate andothers I must do six to twelve treatments before I see relief.

Information on a more detailed description of points forsymptoms is available through our computer analysis. This computerprogram has evolved over twenty years. When I first realized that

many of our results were based on stimulation of acupressure points,I began collecting different points for different conditions. I noticedalso that there were different points recommended by differentauthors for the same conditions. This was very confusing. Who wasright? After several years of trying to figure out why they weredifferent and which points were “right” I discovered Dale’smonumental work Acupuncture Comprehensive Index.14 His workgathers the points from more than two hundred and thirty authors.This is where I first learned that there were 163 different pointsrecommended for headaches. He also highlights the points they agreeon as primary points. These primary points are the ones that areselected in this program and are the major points used in this text. Asin this book, the points for different conditions are described in user-friendly terms but there is also a listing of the technical medicaldescriptions that one can use. The free printout offered with this bookuses the user friendly terminology.

Pictures of the points are shown on the screen or you can geta printout of just the points and point descriptions for one specificcondition. This eliminates having to go back and forth to a largerpicture to find the points related to the condition. They are all listedon one page. The pictures for each point are in much more detail thancan normally be offered in general texts on acupressure. For thegeneral use I have selected only sixteen points for each conditionalthough there are sometimes many more points. When first starting,it can become overwhelming if you had to pick the points from all therecommended points, e.g., headaches. You can get another listing ofadditional points or people who purchase the computer program cansee the additional points listed sixteen at a time (sixteen can beprinted easily on one page so that is the number we do on eachlisting).

Another feature that is offered in the program is a pointsummary for different conditions. When I started looking atconditions for myself I found there were several I was interested in.Sometimes the same points were recommended for differentconditions. To me this made those points more important becausethey treated several problems. I began ranking the points on the

frequency they were used within each group of problems. So if Li4is used for four of the eight conditions I am working with, I stimulateit as often as I can. The program ranks all the points as to frequencyof use within any group of conditions. If you have eight conditionsyou are working with, there could be as many as one hundred andtwenty-eight primary points to select from. The frequency summarynarrows that down to priority points that you work on more oftenthan the other group combinations.

Besides summarizing the different points, the programcombines the macro- and micro-systems for different problems. Ifyou have a shoulder problem, the printout includes important macro-points and micro-points using the ear, hands and foot. A printoutfrom this program is available for free (see page281) or the programcan be purchased to be used by professionals, businesses or familyuse. Sometimes it is easier to get someone to try using acupressurefrom one printed sheet for their condition rather than hunting for thepoints from a listing. A sample printout of the points for headachesthat is printed on the next page, lets you see how it is presented forone condition. Written descriptions are also printed with eachsymptom.

When I work with people that have headaches, I always starton the regular macro-system body points. (Li4, Li11, GB21, &GB20). I have gotten excellent results and will usually get reliefwithin three to five minutes. If the headache is not gone with the firstfour points, I add a few more points while we also use the StressawayMassager on the area where the head hurts. If it is still not gone in afew minutes, I work with some of the points on the micro-systems.The points on the ear are very specific for different parts of the headand usually gives excellent results. Our research results would ofbeen even better for headaches if we had known the points forheadaches on the ear which we know now.

If it is clear that these points are not giving relief I ask moreabout the nature of the headache. If I find it is because of some injuryto the head then we add the micro-point on the ear that relates to thearea of the injury and I usually find faster relief. If they report thatthey usually have neck, shoulder or back pain then I add the micro-

points related to these systems to the headache treatment. I havefound that the underlying cause for many headaches seems to be inthe shoulder, neck and back areas.

If there is still no response to the headache points you wouldwork with either the specific headache condition listed in the indexor additional points listed under headaches. Under headaches you willfind 39 different conditions, like cluster headaches, headache in backof head, or migraine headaches. I would add the points for whicheverone of these is related if needed. You determine which one relates byseeing if the point is sore. Usually though, I only need to work withthe first four points listed on the headache example sheet.

A few people who get no response to this sequence havefound that rolling the Happy-Feet on their feet will stimulate sorepoints that we haven’t been able to identify. This general overallbody treatment will help balance the systems that may be causing theheadache.

When working with the index many times there will bedifferent points for an organ and the condition that relates to theorgan. This gives you more points to choose from to get the bestresults. So if you have an eye problem you should stimulate thegeneral eye points that you found sore and the specific condition ofthe eye, like bloodshot.

When you see an acupuncturist this is usually one of theexploration processes to find the points that relate to your condition.Then there is repetition of treatments of these points to get the long-lasting balanced healing effect.

Sample Computer Printout for Headaches

One lady who said she had a constant headache for a coupleof years reported that she had been hit on the right front temple by asteel beam at work. She had a concussion at the time of injury and theheadache has lingered ever since. We went to the micro-point on theear that related to the temple and it was extremely sore on the rightear. This was the side the beam hit her. The same point on her ear onthe other side of her head was not sore. This point on her ear was one

that was added to her formula for her type of headache. She alsostudied the points for concussion and added some of them to herformula.

Guidelines on using a combination of the micro- and macro-systems are best quoted from Dale, 17 “There are four main ways inwhich these systems may be integrated with traditional pointstimulation: simultaneously, successively, alternatively, andalternately.”

“Simultaneous and successive stimulation of macro- andmicro-points in a single treatment provide methods that areappropriate for those cases in which stimulation of the classicalpoints alone seems insufficient to produce adequate therapeuticresults. The combining of macro- and micro-point stimulation isespecially useful in the treatment of pain.”

“A micro-system might at any time be utilized as analternative to macro-point stimulation. Micro-acupressure as analternative method is particularly suggested: (1) when the patientseems more responsive to a given micro-system stimulation than totraditional point stimulation, or (2) when there is some kind ofcontraindication for the use of the macro-points such as surgery orinjury in the area that would ordinarily be selected for treatment, or(3) when the region of the body that is being treated is distal to agiven micro-system. For example, the Foot system is especiallyeffective in treating the head such as for sinus conditions, or the Earsystem is especially effective in treating the foot. The same principleof distal point effectiveness may be seen in the selection of macro-points. For example, G-20 at the vertex is effective for hemorrhoids,and Li4 at the end of the upper extremity is effective for headaches.”

“The use of micro-systems alternately with macro-acupuncture (acupressure) is indicated in chronic disease whenintensive treatment necessitates alternations of acupressure pointssince the frequent stimulation of the same point tends to inhibit theeffectiveness of that point.” (More so in acupuncture thanacupressure.)

Examples of how these guidelines have been applied to mywork show up in two types of applications that I have used. I usually

begin with some type of treatment to the ear because it is so easy toget to and the results are often very dramatic. One lady who had notbeen able to lift her arm more than a foot away from her body forover three years asked if this would help her. She had seen fivedifferent doctors and nothing they had done was helping. I putpressure on the point on her ear that related to the shoulder for abouttwenty seconds before she said, “I can’t do this, it hurts too much.”She left and came back in thirty minutes and said, “What did you do?Look.” She had full range of motion of her arm and could lift itstraight up toward the ceiling with no pain. For her no other pointswere needed. I saw her a year later and asked if she had beenfollowing up with preventive pressure treatments and she asked,“Why should I?” She again raised her arm up to the ceiling and said,“That twenty-second treatment you gave me a year ago was all Ineeded. I can’t tell you how thankful I am.”

I didn’t realize how important these principles were until I didthe research verifying the results I was getting. Since I was trying toestablish that the micro-systems that related to a problem were sore,I measured the soreness at all the micro-systems I could easily get to.So I would usually stimulate the ear, hand, foot and a few macro-points for about thirty seconds each. This gave me time to record thesoreness at each of those points while the person was pressing thepoints. I knew people were getting good results but I was amazed tosee the numbers turn so high in pain relief. This led me to emphasizethe principle of working with as many systems as you can in theStressaway Acupressure Program. This guarantees the best results.

Another method that will increases the effectiveness of thisStressaway Acupressure is to work with visualization. Besidesincreasing your effectiveness you can increase your spiritualawareness and your connection to healing energies. When youstimulate a point, visualize --in your mind’s eye-- a beam of blueish-white light coming into one end of the Acu-Ki from the healinguniverse. It then passes through the Acu-Ki and into the point you areworking on, spreading healing light from that point to that area of thebody and to the area that you are treating. This is very powerful whileyou are doing it and can be done in a meditation using the visual of

the Acu-Ki as a focal point to bring healing light into this plane foryour healing.

As you breath in, the light comes in. Holding your breath justfor a moment you can see the light absorbing the darker energies ofyour problem. As you breath out, those darker energies leave and goback to the universe for healing. This same visualization can be usedto open up chakras and other areas that you are working on. It is notnecessary to use this technique to get results. You can get results bystimulating the points and watching TV, but this is one method thatmany people find very powerful for getting better results andincreasing their spiritual growth with Stressaway Acupressure.

One of the essential roles of visualization is to begin openingup the right brain. The visualization process utilizes the right brainwhere the unconscious is able to begin bringing about that which youdesire. By visualizing, you are strengthening your powers of healingand calling forth that part of yourself that can assist you in yourhigher goals of healing and spirituality.18

The following analogy may help you understand the conceptof body energy and of acupressure: Energy in the body flows in away similar to electricity in the home. If the electricity in your homeshort-circuits, the wires will overheat and a fire may result. However,the home is protected by fuses which will blow before a fire can start.The body also has fuse-like areas -- the places where the meridianscome to the surface -- that allow it to deal with short-circuits. Theyare the acupressure points we've been talking about. When thesepoints are sore, it is an indication that there is a "short" in yourcircuitry. When you put pressure on these tender points, you activatethe body's Healing Response. Your body then does everything it canto heal the condition causing the symptom and repair the wiringproblem related to the imbalances in the system.

Finding a sore point with acupressure indicates that you'velocated the right point. If the point is really sore, you can expectexcellent results with acupressure. If the point isn't sore, you usuallydon't need to work on it. Some people feel less pain than others, yetthe body will still respond to the pressure to activate the HealingResponse. I personally don’t feel much pain on the points but I getgood results by regular stimulation on the points for a condition.

Acute or persistent pain usually requires more pressure on thepoints and more frequent treatment. Breathing deeply -- in throughthe nose and out through the mouth -- will help to change the paininto sensation, which makes it easier to bear.

How to StimulateYour Body's Own Healing Power

Apply steady pressure to the sensitive or tender point, untilthe pain at that point goes away. This usually takes about 30 to 60seconds. Remember that deep pressure creates the best results andthat the pain at the pressure point will neither last long, nor cause

damage. Unless otherwise indicated, apply pressure bilaterally. Thismeans that if you're treating a spot on the left hand, you shouldideally also treat the corresponding spot on the right hand. If youhave a headache only on the left side of your head, you will usuallyonly have to work the points on the left side of your body.

In sensitive places like the face, use your finger or lightpressure with the blunt end of your Acu-Ki, to avoid bruising orhurting the area. If you bruise easily, you may have a vitamin Cdeficiency -- check with your doctor before continuing withacupressure. Pressure points for bruising are listed in the index also.If the disorder is unusually severe or the pressure points are verytender, use alternating pressure, i.e., increase and decrease thepressure once or twice a second throughout the treatment period, ormassage in small circular movements around the point.

Find the points that are sore in any symptom group and workthese points until the soreness is gone. Also work the sore pointsmore often than those that are not sore. Sometimes this means youwill only need to work a few points to get results. Acupressure is 90to 95 percent effective in the treatment of many common maladies.

To speed up treatments I use both the Happy-Feet and theAcu-Ki at the same time. By thinking about what points you areworking with and where they are located you can figure out how toreach two at a time with different hands and tools. E.g., you canstimulate both S36s at the same time. You can stimulate the rightGB21 with the Acu-Ki in the left hand and the left Li11 with theHappy-Feet in the right hand. Both tools are in the Acupressure Kit.

Whenever stimulating GB21 you want to cross over and usethe opposite hand to get more effective pressure. Sometimes you mayneed to use one hand to press the elbow up so you can reach GB21easier. Do not use the hand to stimulate the point on the same side asthe point. But when you work with GB20, you will find you get morepressure by using the hand to hold your tool on the same side as thepoint.

Since the Acu-Ki is so small, you can work with it almostanywhere -- standing in line, watching TV, waiting for someone,sitting in a traffic jam, traveling in a car, or simply whenever youthink about it. Before you use it in public places make sure you havenone of the side effects like dizziness or sleepiness that sometimescan effect beginners. Precautions

Acupressure is safe. Side effects are very rare. The followingprecautionary measures should, however, be observed: Since one canbecome very relaxed, light-headed, and even faint or dizzy, it isadvisable to sit or lie down during treatment. In some people whenthey first start using acupressure or acupuncture and they activate theHealing Response the body may respond as if it were damaged andgo into a slight state of shock. Besides the signs above, you mayexperience profuse perspiring and feel nauseated. One percent of thepeople first starting may experience this reaction. Sometimes whenour body has experienced imbalances for so long we just don’t realizehow much healing is needed. Besides being seated, it is best not to

drive while using these tools until you aresure you don’t have this response.

If you do get these responses,stimulating G26 or S36 will usually relievethese symptoms. G26 has powerfulvasoconstrictive and anti-shock propertieswhich work through the autonomic nervoussystem.19,20 People who have these responsesshould begin their acupressure treatments

slowly and not use much pressure at first. The body will get used toit after a while and then you can do the regular treatment schedulesrecommended here. Because of this response, which is not damagingbut it is uncomfortable, many acupuncturists will only stimulate a fewpoints in the first few treatment to assure the patient can handle theregular treatment schedules.

This particular response was an important motivating factorfor making the terminology of this system more user-friendly. Therewas a person who wanted to know if this would help with backproblems. She had pain that was still there after several surgeries andnothing had helped. In less than five minutes the pain was completelygone but she was nauseated and felt faint for a few minutes. Althoughshe had help with a problem that had troubled her for years she didnot begin the program because of this reaction. I felt she hadn’t

started because I didn’t explain better what we were doing. At threeA.M. the next morning I awoke realizing that “We were tricking thebody into thinking it was damaged and that with some people, thiswould be an expected response.” Understanding the process assuresyou of getting better results.

Another consideration is that many people feel sleepy aftertreatment. This is a natural product of the stress-relieving effect ofthis program. When you get rid of the tenseness associated with manysymptoms, the body wants to sleep. If you feel sleepy, sleep. Don’tpush yourself to drive or participate in any activity where you needto be alert. When I do some of my regular routines just beforeretiring, I go to sleep very quickly. Do not administer acupressureafter meals because it will use some of the energy that you would usefor digestion to heal and you won’t fully get the benefits of either.

Pregnant women should avoid using SP6, SP4, LI4, S36and points on the abdomen. There are some points which effect thebirthing process and should not be used until you are ready to givebirth. (See childbirth and pregnancy). Most times it will not make anydifference until you are ready to give birth, but for some people theycould be very sensitive to acupressure and these points may startunwanted early labor.

Do not use acupressure on individuals with serious cardiacproblems. There are no serious side effects, but a slight drop in bloodpressure could create an undesirable effect. Pressure on acupoints cansignificantly influence the cardiovascular system. In experimentalgroups there was a decrease in systolic arterial pressure, diastolicarterial pressure, mean arterial pressure, heart rate and skin bloodflow.21 From this research you can see that there can be a verybeneficial effect but because of the severity of consequences of usingthe wrong points and the life-threatening aspect of heart problems itis recommended you work closely with your health professionalwhile using this system. Some points speed up the heart and othersslow down the heart.

Do not apply to skin which is inflamed, infected, scarred orhas a rash. Consult a medical doctor or professional acupuncturist forthe following conditions: stomach or duodenal ulcers; contagious

diseases; advanced heart, kidney, liver or lung diseases.Should you consider stopping current treatment or delaying

surgery while you try acupressure, be sure to do this afterconsultation with your health practitioner or a qualifiedacupuncturist. In any event, find out about safer treatments beforetaking dangerous drugs or having expensive surgery. Acupressure isoften safer and more effective than drug therapy or surgery. It shouldnot be used as a substitute for conventional treatment when doingso could harm you or hide symptoms important for properdiagnosis. For example, treating a sinus headache may mask thesinus infection that could go into the brain and cause serious damage,if left untreated. Know what the symptoms are that you are treatingand if they could be related to serious life-threatening problems.Make sure you are working with a team of professionals if it is thistype of symptom. You may still work with acupressure but may needto add different points.

Pressure on the points can cause what seems like a very sorepoint, like you have bruised the area. This only seems sore becauseyou are on the right points. Go slowly and use a more gentlepressure. Some points can actually become black and blue. Use agentler touch, maybe just holding the points with your fingers. Alsoconsider using additional points for ’bruises easily’ found in thisindex. Most people don’t get bruises, so determine how to overcomethat condition if it bothers you.

One person using this program complained about the bruises.When we asked about his symptom he said his sciatica pain of sixyears had gone but he wanted to get rid of the bruises also. You mayalso want to consider using magnets or lasers for stimulating thepoints in an effective manner without pressure on the skin. Thesealternatives are listed on www.stress-away.com.

Sometimes a condition will worsen the minute you touch apoint. This is an indication that you have located the point that relatesto the problem. Move slowly with confidence that you can soonexpect relief. I have seen this several times with people that havemigraine headaches or had brain injuries. The minute we touchedpoints related to the problem the problem got worse. Li4 was a big

point for this reaction. When we held pressure on the point longer,the symptom lessened.

Pain is a warning that something is wrong. Do not useacupressure to mask pain. By activating the Healing Response youare awakening powerful energies within your body. This energy canheal conditions that have baffled doctors and plagued people foryears. Sometimes however, the pain-killing aspect of endorphinproduction can hide an underlying cause or symptom. Headaches canbe related to brain tumors; fatigue to heart problems, environmentalconditions, or stressful lifestyles; knee problems could be related toarthritis and not just knee problems.

A proper diagnosis is sometimes critical to get the results youwant because you may not be using the right points. A condition maynot necessarily be healed just because the pain is relieved. Try todetermine what causes the pain. The underlying cause may require asimple dietary change, more rest and sleep, or a complete change oflifestyle. Whatever the causes, don't ignore it by just treating the pain-- you could be ignoring a symptom of cancer.

If you suspect that you have a life-threatening medicalcondition, we urge you to seek competent medical help. This cautionworks the other way also. For example, if you are using medicationto deal with migraine headaches, they could be hiding the underlyingimbalance in your energy system that is causing the headaches. Thisis especially true if you know there are negative side-effects of themedications you are taking. Part of the experimental emphasis for thisprogram is to see what works for you.

This book is intended only as a guide to help the averageperson tap into the body's innate ability to heal itself -- by naturalmeans. Although you may get tremendous results working with theStressaway Acupressure Program for yourself, remember that treatingothers or diagnosing their symptoms is regulated by the medicalcommunity. There are laws against you setting up a practice andtreating others but you can share this information with others andhelp them learn the things that have been helpful for you. Even whenI demonstrate at fairs and festivals and people get miraculous resultsI always share, “This is something you can do for yourself.” The

Your Checklist for Achieving Better Results

Don't become discouraged if there isn't immediate recovery.Some conditions, i.e., headaches, usually respond immediately, butchronic conditions may need repeated treatment for cumulativeeffects to take hold.

If you are not getting the results you want, consider thefollowing: • You may need to stimulate more frequently. Remember that

the effects of acupressure are cumulative; • You may be off the point. Carefully read the instructions

again, and make sure you are on a sensitive point. Considergetting a free Computer Acupressure Analysis for a moredetailed printout of the points related to your condition;

• Are you stimulating the point hard enough? You may need tostimulate the point for a longer–or shorter–period or use analternative form of pressure;

• You may need to experiment more and use different points.Make sure you are using the meridian points in conjunctionwith the microsystem points. Research indicates you get thebest results when you use as many systems as possible, e.g.,the foot, hand, ear and meridian points combined work thebest.

• Other treatments may be inhibiting acupressure results. Forinstance, acupressure may not work if you are takingnarcotics, Valium, Darvon, or Talwin. (Check with yourhealth practitioner, though, before discontinuing anyprescription drugs.) ;

• Correct diagnosis is important for you to select the rightpoints for your condition. Check around and study yourcondition. A different type of health professional may have amore accurate diagnosis that will pinpoint what acupressurepoints may help better or another form of treatment.

• You may also find an acupuncturist who can stabilize yourcondition so that acupressure will be more effective;

• Traditional Chinese Medicine places a strong emphasis on the

use of herbs in treatment. The herbs that may help for yourcondition will be listed on our web site.;

• You also may want to consider using another method ofstimulating the points. If your points are very sore you mightget better results using a laser or magnets to activate theHealing Response. Again, check our web site for theseoptions and other links for alternative healing. www.stress-away.com.

The research results of people using the StressawayAcupressure Program indicated that about 3 to 5 percent of thepeople did not report any immediate positive response to acupressure.On the positive side 37% reported complete pain relief. Other studies--which our data somewhat supports-- indicates that there are fourcategories of effectiveness of acupressure. These are high, medium,low and non responders. The best therapeutic effects are recorded inthe high-responding group being practically absent in the non-responding category (67%). The therapeutic effect is intermediary inthe medium and low-responding group (33%).22 My results wouldindicate that 10 percent of those using our program may havedifficulties getting the results they desire. Other studies seem tosupport an expectation of positive results in the 90 percent range.23

PART THREE -- USING THE TOOLS

Stressaway ® Acupressure Tools

Stressaway Acupressure began with the development of thetools. These four tools have been the only modalities that giveconsistent results over the years. I have tried others but I keep comingback to these four. Comments like, “I won’t go anywhere without myAcu-Ki,” have come back to me enough that I know that acupressureis much more powerful with tools. That is why they are thecornerstones of the Stressaway Acupressure Program. I am lookingat research designs to verify these insights. Although you may onlyhave one tool, (three tools come in the Acupressure Kit and four inOne of Everything), I am including information about how to usethese tools because of their importance. You may have similar toolsor may make some if you don’t want to purchase ours. Thisinformation is not included, (in as much detail), with any other toolsI have seen on the market. The history on what led to the design anddevelopment of each tool is in Appendix D.

Acu-Ki ®

The smallest tool I use is called the Acu-Ki. Acu means pointed or sharp. Ki is theJapanese name for the energy that flowsthrough the meridians and is said toconnect to all the energies of the universe.The Chinese name for this energy is Qi.

The Acu-Ki allows you to stimulate the acupressure pointsaccurately--sustaining the correct amount of pressure much better andlonger than you can with your fingers. The rolling part is a gentle rollthat can also be used on the side to find points that are difficult tolocate. Find the general area of an acupoint and then roll the roundside until the point is very sore. This rolling action can also be usedto look for general sore points on the hand or foot just by rolling back

and forth paying most attention to any sore points.There are three different points that can be used on the ends.

The sharp point of the Acu-Ki is good for the ear and regularacupressure points. The dull point can be used for points on the faceand soft stomach areas that are very sensitive. You can also use lesspressure on sensitive points. The largest point can be used on placesclose to the bone, like the skull (GB20), or for deep tissue work(Li11). Sometimes when a point is hard to find you can use therolling action in the middle of the Acu-Ki to find the point and applypressure.

It is made of natural wood and small enough to fit in yourpurse or pocket. This advantage of the Acu-Ki makes it easier to usemore often and repetition is one of your key principles for success.Also because you can carry it with you, you can treat symptomswhile they are just starting and don’t have to wait until you get homeor some place for treatment. This has its advantages but be carefulwhen using in a dark place like a movie theater. I have lost my Acu-Ki by dropping it. Usually by asking the movie people to look for itduring clean up, you can get it back.

The Acu-Ki and the Happy-Feet both have the advantage overother methods of stimulating the acupoints. When the point is sore,you are on it. When using needles you can miss the exact point andsince there is no pain, you may not get the Healing Response. Withelectrical stimulation you have the same problem plus some studieshave shown that to get a good Healing Response you must make thestimulus so strong that there is a problem with damaging the skin.Magnets and lasers are good for stimulating the points but you alsohave the problem of knowing when you are exactly on the pointwhich you don’t have with these tools.

Your Acu-Ki has a sharp and dull end for deep stimulation ofacupressure points. Find the general area of the pressure point you arelooking for and gently press with the end you choose until you hit aspot that is very sore. Then press hard enough to make the point hurt.Hold the point until the pain goes away, which is usually within 30to 60 seconds. You usually will not need to stimulate a point morethan a few minutes because of the natural pain killing effects of your

body's Healing Response. For some people, the points will becomevery sore and it may seem like the area is injured. The point is sorebecause of the problem related to the point, not because of thepressure you put on it. Be more gentle with your pressure if thishappens or if there is any bruising.

There are several ways of holding the Acu-Ki. On sensitivespots where you want the most control, hold it like a pencil. If thespot is very sensitive, you can lightly hold it like a pen and slightlytwist it. Normally you only have to hold it on a spot, once you find it.To get maximum pressure, move it in your hand toward the littlefinger like you would hold an ice pick. Another way of holding it isto put one end between the first and third fingers near the web of thefingers. Close the fingers and thumb around the Acu-Ki. This givesyou more pressure and reach for use behind the head and onshoulders.

I decide which modality (e.g., ear) to use based on where aproblem is located, how severe it is, how much time I have, where Iam, which points seem the most sore, and which system gives me thebest results. First, if I have a problem with my foot, ankle or hand itis easiest to treat it with the ear points, then the points on the hand,and next, on the macro-points on different parts of the body. I like toavoid the damaged area because I want to make sure I do not damageit more. Sometimes we do not know exactly what is wrong, but wewant to see if a little acupressure helps our condition. Doctors mustbe very careful when they diagnose, because they are usuallyconsidering much more invasive and expensive treatment methods.If my back is bothering me and it is hard to bend to get to somemacro-points for my back, then I can use any of the micro-pointseffectively.

Secondly, the severity of the problem determines how manypoints I use. If I can't work because I have hurt my back I wouldprobably use all the points I have identified for that condition. Iwould apply pressure every couple of hours until I get a responsestrong enough to allow me to begin working again. Remembering thecumulative effect law gives me the motivation to keep stimulating thepoints.

Happy-Feet ®

This tool is different from other foot massagers, and its designwas developed over a period of twenty years. Deep grooves withwidely-spaced ridges give maximum pressure on acupressure pointson the feet and hands. These grooves are spaced so they also fitcomfortably in the hand, making it an excellent tool for deep tissuework and some of the points that need stronger pressure. This designalso makes it easier to reach and put pressure on acupressure pointsof the ear, hands, feet, and the body. Even if you have learned howto work these areas with other Reflexology techniques it is sometimesdifficult to treat yourself without this tool.

The large end is for deep acupressure points in muscles andagainst bone (GB20), and places where the sharp point may be toosharp (C6, C12). The sharp end was designed specifically forworking on the ear but it was found that it is a powerful tool for allpressure points. If you do use the sharp end to stimulate regularacupoints, remember it is sharper and may require less pressure to beeffective.

Rolling on the bottoms of the feet stimulates all theacupressure points that may be sore in the meridian system. Thisprovides a method to completely balance the body and energizeourselves. This allows us to find and treat illnesses and imbalancesbefore they become serious health threats.

You can stimulate both feet at once with the Happy-Feet.When working on the inside or outside edges of the foot, move yourknee to the right or to the left and bend your ankle so the tool rolls orpresses directly on the spot. Work one or both feet at a time,sometimes using the idle foot to hold the Happy-Feet tool in place.You can use a light, rolling action, or, when you find soreness, justhold the point.

Some people bring their foot onto the top of their knee bycrossing one leg over the other and roll the Happy-Feet on theirpoints or use the ends for deeper pressure. Both the Happy-Feet andthe Acu-Ki tools can be used on the feet or hands. The ends andridges are different, so you get a different effect. When a person hasa sinus problem, I recommend using the Happy-Feet because thepoints on the hand and feet for the sinus are in between the bones andthis sharp edge works better than the gentle rolling effect of the Acu-Ki.

Keep the Happy-Feet off the floor when not in use, so no onewill slip on it. At first you may need to wear socks because theHappy-Feet is so powerful. After a while your feet get used to thepressure and you can remove the stockings. It is best to removestockings from your feet to keep them from slipping. A short hairedcarpet is your best surface. Long hair carpets can catch and the toolcould make grooves in the carpet. There are five sizes of points onthe two tools. The Happy-Feet has the sharpest and dullest points andthe Acu-Ki has three point settings in between.

If it is hard to get to an area, the Happy-Feet offers a longerreach and it is sometimes easier to reach the points. The ridges aredeeper than any other roller on the market for deep pressure into thepoints, (remember--no pain, no gain). These ridges are alsodesigned to fit comfortably in the hand. People with weak hands findit easy to put deep pressure onto points with the Happy-Feet ratherthan the Acu-Ki. This also gives massage therapists a tool for deeppressure without damaging their wrists.

At first I sold the tools individually, but I found I couldn’tdetermine which tool would work for a specific symptom. Anotherreason that this tool was included in the Acupressure Kit is becauseI didn’t know when the person would need this deeper stimulus.

Beth had scoliosis and her back hurt every morning when sheawoke. I thought the Back-eze would work the best for her but shereported that when she used the Happy-Feet at night before going tobed that the pain was gone in the morning. This example and manyothers like it, led me to combine the tools into the Acupressure Kitwith three tools and different combinations of books.

Stressaway Massager

This massager is scientifically designed torelease stress by deeply massaging musclesand activating key acupressure points whichsend signals to relax and heal all the parts ofthe body. Grasp the handle about two inchesbehind the two rollers and roll the massagerover the desired area with a firm pressure.Light pressure may be necessary in sensitiveareas but strong pressure is recommended formost muscle tissues. (You can use

10 to 15 lbs. effectively, which you can determine byusing a bathroom scale. Simply press until you get 15 lbs.to know the correct pressure.) The end of the handle isdesigned for stimulating specific acupressure points.Many people get relief using this tool for conditions that have notresponded to other therapies. Positive results reported by users led tothe development of all the other tools with the major emphasis onacupressure. In the town where I first started selling this toolI purchased a car and the car salesman asked me whatI did. I showed him the Stressaway and he said he gotone for Christmas from his son. He had open heartsurgery and the tube that they put in his arm to monitorthe surgery caused nerve damage and there was nothing

that could be done for it. It bothered him for several years. He rolledthe Stressaway around the different parts of his arm that were

bothering him and the pain left. He gave mea very good deal on the car. The picture isnot the same person but you can see how it isrolled on the arm.

I once rolled this on a woman's headand her headache of three days’ durationwent away. Just by rolling on the head and

stimulating sore points, the body is tricked into thinking we have hurtourselves. The resulting Healing Response gets rid of manyheadaches. This tool is also powerful when used on the other points.The head is also a Micro-System of acupuncture. By rolling theStressaway all over the head we are stimulating points that balancethe total meridian system. This leads to better health and a renewedsense of well-being.

Headaches Muscle tension from constantstress often results in migraine and sinusheadaches. For sinus headaches, massage theforehead and the front of the scalp. (Abovepicture) For headaches on the back of the head,roll the massager across the base of the skull andvertically along the neck. There are 86acupressure points on the scalp that have beenused to treat headaches. Just rolling in a sore areastimulates the Healing Response. A list of themost important points for headaches is used as the sample for theComputer Analysis on page 37. "No More Headaches" is my nextbook that lists points for 39 different types of headaches andunderlying problems. Neck and Shoulder Pain and TensionStress contributes to tension in the muscles ofthe neck and shoulders. A tapping vibration anda deep muscle massage bring relief. Tap the

muscles lightly with the side of one roller. Increaseto a vigorous tapping motion. Follow with a rollingm o t i o n a p p l y i n g a s m u c hpressure as is comfortable. When you roll yourmassager on the top of another person’s shoulder,

use one ball only. Deeppressure with the one ballpenetrates the acupoints ontop of the shoulder rather thanmissing the importantacupoints by trying to rollwith both balls. Another effective application is to grasp theroller in both hands and roll them against theneck and head. For shoulder treatment, place

the massager between the upper back and a wall as described in"Self-use on your back."

One lady from Asheville, NC said, “I got more relief in 10minutes with these tools than a year of physical therapy three timesa week for a car injury to my neck.” (N.W.)

Another person who had neck problems responded with the“Healing Response” almost the second I touched her neck. She hadan immediate shock response and felt very faint. She explained thatshe had been in extreme pain for twenty-eight years from anautomobile accident. No therapy had been able to relieve the painbecause the minute anyone touched her she became faint and the painincreased.

We worked with the G26 point to deal with the faintingfeelings and while she stimulated the points on her hand whichrelated to the neck with the Acu-Ki, I worked on her neck andshoulders with the Stressaway. Back Pain and Tension Arthritis, muscle spasm, injury,stress, weakness and over-exertion can contribute to back pain andtension. Tapping the sore muscles and massaging against the wallhelps to increase blood flow and energy in the area and aids inrelieving pain. Regular use of the massager helps restore andmaintain muscle tone and strength.

One lady bought this for her husband who was home in bedwith back pain. The doctors couldn’t find anything wrong but he hadintense muscle spasms. They were intense enough that he was offwork. She said they were so bad that he let her shop without him

there to monitor her purchases. When she got home,he told her she had been taken again because thedoctors told him nothing would help except rest. Shetold him to be quiet and turn over soshe could roll his back. In two dayshe was out of bed. He came the nextmonth to the show just to thank meand tell me, ”This was the bestpurchase she has ever made. Iwouldn’t trade the Stressaway for itsweight in gold.” It worked for himwithout working with any of theother tools.

Muscle Cramps and General Aching It isespecially effective for releasing musclespasms and cramps in muscles. When I getthat nagging upper back muscle spasm, this is thetool that helps the most. If no one is around to helpme, I use the Back-Eze for the deepest effect.Overexertion can contribute to muscle cramps andoverall aching. Use the massager to roll awaydiscomfort and improve circulation in the painful

Tired and Sore Feet To aid in bringingcirculation to tired and sore feet, roll the massageracross the bottom of the foot. Place the massageron the floor and roll one or both feet back andforth along the length of the foot and from side toside. For a deeper massage to specific sore areas,apply pressure in a rolling motion with the end ofthe handle. For deepest pressure into the Reflexology points in thefeet see the Happy-Feet.Stomach Discomfort and Muscle Tone To help improve muscle

tone, relieve gas pains, constipation, andstomach spasms, place both hands on the endof the massager handle and roll up and downfrom the ribs to the pubic bone. Use as muchpressure as comfortable.

Cellulite deposits tend to center in thethighs and buttocks. To aid in dissolvingdeposits and restoring muscle tone andcirculation, vigorously massage these areas.Use an up-and-down motion then a brisk

horizontal massage.

Double Chin Lack of muscle tone and circulationcontribute to the double chin problem. To aid inrestoring circulation and tone to this area, roll themassager horizontally along the base of the chin.Contact the chin with just one roller at a time. Usea comfortable amount of pressure. A Japanese ladytold us this was how they massaged the chin in

Japan. Massage has the same effect on muscles as exercise. Itincreases the circulation and brings the youthfulness back into themuscles. It has the same effect on the underside of the arms thatsometimes become flabby as we age.

For Self-Use on Your Back

The most effective manner of using the massager on yourback is against the wall. This was the original intention of this toolfor my back. (I used this tool to stimulate the Neuro-Lymphaticrelease points on the back that I couldn’t reach.13) With the handlepointed downward, position the rollers on the sore area of your back.Now lean against a wall, (not wallboard because it will leave marks).In order to create a rolling action on your back move your hipsforward and back or flex your knees or raiseyourself up and down on your toes. Two to threeinches is enough at one spot. Place one foot infront of the other for balance. If the massagerslips on the wall, a light pressure upward on thehandle will hold it in place or you may have tochange the angle of your back to the wall. Whenyou locate the area of greatest pain or tension,put more pressure on that spot by pressingharder against the wall. Move your feet awayfrom the wall to produce more pressure on the back.

Light and then heavy pounding on the muscles with the sideof the roller is also very effective in treating a tense back and musclespasms. The Back-Eze evolved from this tool to allow the rollers tobe mounted onto the wall more permanently.

For Using on the BackOf Another Person

Have the other person lie down and relax. Place the fingertipson one hand on the spine near the top of the massager. This allowsyou to keep the massager centered and always working on the deepmuscles along the spine. You don’t need to do this if the person isundressed because the finger pressure just allows you to feel thespine when you can’t see it under a blouse or shirt. Feedback fromthe other person will help you judge the pressure desired. To apply

greater pressure, hold the massager closer to the rollers or use bothhands on the massager for extra deep massage and apply your bodyweight. Care should be taken not to rub directly on a bone or delicatearea.

Be gentle and build up to deep tissuework. One large farmer purchased theStressaway because he said his wife couldn’tever get enough deep pressure for a goodmassage. When he got home, he kept tellingher to go deeper and she worked on him forabout two hours. He said it was great but thenext day he could hardly move. Start slowly.Be gentle with yourself.Neck and shoulders

To get the best pressure on your neck and shoulders hold themassager as seen in this picture. When massaging the left shoulderand neck it is best to hold the massager with your right hand near therollers and the left hand near the end. To get leverage and pressure onthe rollers you pull toward the neck with the hand near the rollers andpush away from the neck with the hand near the end. This gives youleverage like digging with a shovel. Then with that pressure appliedyou roll the massager back and forth.

Back-Eze ®

This tool was designed to give a deep massage to the musclesof the spine. You can now ease muscle spasms, improve circulation,

and reduce tension and stress in your backand shoulders without anyone's help. Theback is another Micro-system that can treatany meridian imbalance. Stimulating pointson the back can treat the whole body. Mostconditions treated with acupressure that haveimportant points on the back are easilystimulated with the Back-Eze.

The Back-Eze is designed forstimulating muscles and energy points onyour back which are hard to reach. To use theBack-Eze, place the rollers in the hole of thewall mount at the height you feel soreness or

tension and lean against them with lightor heavy pressure depending on theamount of pain you feel and theintensity of massage you wish. Whenyou locate the area of greatest pain ortension, put more pressure on that spotby pressing harder against the wall.The more pressure you use the betteryour results. The most penetratingpressure is applied by moving yourfeet away from the wall as you roll.

You will get amazing results with your feet one or two feet from thewall and slowly rolling up and down one or two inches at a time.Never use more pressure than is comfortable on any spot. You canwork all over the back but most relief will be found along the spinebecause of the large muscles and important energy release pointsfound there. Move your hips forward and back or flex your knees tocreate a rolling action on your back. If you prefer, place one foot in

front of the other for balance and stability. As you do this exercise,your legs will get stronger, strengthening your back.

The Back-Ki ( short round device for inserting into differentmount holes) is designed to put pressure on specific points on theback rather than roll like the rollers. Usually the rollers will beenough to give you the pressure you need to relieve pain or stimulatepoints. Some people do like deeper pressure so we have provided thisitem. Be very careful with this device, especially near any bones.Some of the points you may want to work are listed below. I havelisted the points on the back that relate to specific organ systems.Anyone having a disease with a particular organ system will usuallyfind that the corresponding point on the back will be sore. It is easyto stimulate these points with the Back-eze.

Four key points related for longevity are B22, B23, B24, andB25 found on the diagram on the next page. Another criticallongevity point is S36. The Acu-Ki Institute is currently conductingresearch to measure the effects these tools have on longevity. The back is one of the Micro-systems of the body thatStressaway Acupressure Program works with, especially in theprevention mode. Any sore points indicate an imbalance in your meridian systemwhich, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, is the basis of allillness.

When I first started working with points on the back I waslooking for Neuro-Lymphatic release points. Using these points gaveme the first relief from pain that I had suffered for fifteen years. Ihave included a condensation of those points in Appendix H.

Each tool isslightly different in design and intensity allowing a different effect onthe energy system. Working with each of these systems a few minutes each daygives us a way of creating harmony and balance in our lives. All ofour books and tools are designed to assist you in relieving pain ordisease. PART FOUR -- MICRO SYSTEMS DETAILS

Hand and Feet Microsystems Reflexology

The next two sections of thebook cover the major macro-andmicro-systems in detail.

In this system the right foot orhand corresponds with the right sideof the body. The side of the foot orhand corresponds with the side of thebody, and the insole or thumb sidecorresponds with the center of thebody. The toes relate to the top of thebody and the heels to the bottom ofthe spine. The hand matches thebody in a similar manner. Pressurepoints for bones, muscles, and organsare found in these approximate areas.The soles and palms relate mostly tothe back part of the body and the topsto the front. Use this general formwhen working with more detailedcharts.

Keeping the aboverepresentation in mind, we find thespine along the inside of the foot.Since the foot is arched, we find thatthe spine comes up into the foot andis not restricted to the bottom. Thiswill make it seem as if it is on theside of the foot because it comes upso high. This will be similar to otherparts you are trying to find. Probe inthe general area and move arounduntil you find the most tender spot.

Many parts like the spine, hips,and shoulders wrap around theside of the foot. This is clearer inthe charts of the side of the foot.

The bones and muscles fitthe same pattern; all of the bodysystems overlap. The same pointmay be sore for a muscle, nerve,bone or any of the other bodysystems found in that spot.Pressing a sore spot will start theHealing Response in thecorresponding part of the body.

The large tendon on yourfoot can be located by pulling

your big toe up. This tight tendon can be felt with your finger. It willbe sore so work gently aroundit, not on it.

Some authorities say thetop of the foot matches the frontof the body24. Others say it'shard to tell25. See which worksbest for you. One of ourresearch goals at the Acu-KiInstitute and the HealthScreening system will focus onthis controversy.

Stiffness or badly-swollen or large bunions of thebasal joint of the big toe mayindicate problems with thelower cervical vertebra. Thiscan affect the head, shoulders,arms, hands, neck, nose, eyes,

and ears. Problems in thelower extremities canoriginate from the vertebraalso. Rotate the toe to loosenit and feel for swelling,hardness, and pain. Massageyour toe lightly at first,increasing the pressure inaccordance with your painthreshold. Working with yourbig toe and the other toes in agentle rotating manner willalso loosen the shoulder andneck area.

These charts showthe muscles and organs onthe front of the body. Injuriesto these areas should be

initially massaged for twentyminutes (First a ten minutemassage, then a five minutepause, and then another tenminute massage). You canalso use the time sequence inthe Acupressure Principlessection. The points of theMicro-System are usuallyworked longer than the bodyacupressure points. Tenminutes is usually themaximum time recommendedin one treatment session for aparticular point on the foot.Massage to these areas will

also speed healing from surgery or open wounds to the front of thebody. The more recent the injury, the faster it can be healed.

Changes in a woman'sbreast may be reflected in thehands and feet. Massagethese areas for potentialproblems. The change mayshow up in the feet or handsbefore you experience lumpsor hardness in the breast.Many practitioners26 reportthat working these areas ofthese micro systems may keeplumps or lymph nodes fromforming on the breast, orremove them once they haveformed. We have researchdesigned to test thisexperience but to date, weonly have testimonialevidence on how well this

works. Important: Always consult a health practitioner, when youexperience problems in this or other life- threatening areas.

When I explained the connection to the breast and foot to onelady, she pondered, “Oh, that’s what it was. My dad used to love usto massage his feet but there was one spot on the top that wasextremely sore for maybe five years. We found out later that he hadbreast cancer and he died. Maybe if I had known that this sore pointrelated to breast cancer, we could have had him checked out and hemay have lived.”

Every woman that has been examined with breast cancer hashad soreness in the corresponding area of the feet or hands. If thecancer is up in the lymph area we will see it more outside of the footnear the arm pit area. If it is lower and more near the center line ofthe body we find a soreness closer to the inside of the foot near thearch. This seems like a very powerful, non-invasive method ofscreening for breast cancer that the Acu-Ki Institute is investigating.

The teeth show up on the fronttoes with the lower jaw on row 27and upper jaw on row28. Thismatches the law stating that thehigher up the body an area is, thecloser to the toes you will find it.As you move away from thecenter of the body, you also moveaway from your front eye teeth.Each tooth can be found on onespecific part of a toe, dependingon where it is. Problems withgums will also show up on thesespecific spots. There is not asmuch muscle on top of the foot sosome of these areas may respondto working with your fingers also.You can also see parts of theinner ear, neck and other parts ofthe mouth here.

Ear Micro System Auriculotherapy

The illustration here depicts the bodymapped in the ear, much like an invertedfetus. You can see how the back is invertedon the ear in the round inner section. Theneck shows up low on the ear whereas thelow back shows up higher on the ear. Thismapping of the ear was completed by Dr.T.D. Oleson at the UCLA School ofMedicine27. Through electrical and thermaltesting he supported acupuncturists' claimsthat a somatotopic mapping of the body isrepresented upon the external ear.

If you read my previous book“Acupressure: Ancient Wisdom for Modern

Day Healing”28 you can see that the pictures of the ear anddescription on how to work with this Micro-system is expanded here.The pictures here are from Terry Oleson’s latest book“Auriculotherapy Manual: Chinese and Western Systems of EarAcupuncture.” Much of the material in this section is a quote fromthis book so that I can be as accurate as possible.

Auriculotherapy is a therapeutic intervention in whichstimulation of the auricle of the external ear is utilized to alleviatehealth conditions in other parts of the body. While originally basedupon the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture, the somatotopiccorrespondence of specific parts of the body to specific parts of theear was first developed in modern France by Dr. Paul Nogier. It isthis integrated system of Chinese and Western practices ofAuriculotherapy as formulated by Terry Oleson that will be describedin this text.29 Our emphasis here is to give you enough knowledgethat you can produce the well documented healing effects in your selfwithout any complicated tools or training. You will be amazed howeasily most pain disappears with just a few minutes of stimulation.

Musculoskeletal auricular points represent the skin, muscles,tendons, ligaments, and skeletal bone structures of the correspondingbody area, as well as well as blood circulation to that area. Clinicalproblems treated by ear reflex points include relief of muscle tension,muscle strains, muscle tremors, muscle weakness, tendonitis,sprained ligaments, bone fractures, bone spurs, peripheral neuralgias,swollen joints, arthritis, shingles, sunburn, skin irritations, and skinlesions.

The reason I expanded this section is because it is one of the easiestmicro-systems to work with and the results are often very dramatic.There are auricular treatment plans for more than 250 medicalconditions and 200 parts of the body listed in the index. All of the earpoints are listed by their names and the reference point developed byTerry Oleson.

In order to provide a systematic method for locating theprecise position of a point on the ear, a zone system was developedwhich is based upon the proportional subdivision of major anatomicalareas of the auricle. Each auricular zone is represented in

this auricular nomenclature system by a set of Two letters and anumber. Three views identify these zones: 1. The surface view whichis what you see when you look directly at the ear; 2. The hidden viewof the ear shows you points that you cannot see unless they areexposed by laying the ear out flat. Zones that are on the side of theear then can then be seen; 3. Posterior view or back of the ear. Youwill note in the diagrams, some of the points are indicated by squaresand some circles. The squares indicate hidden points which you canidentify with the hidden view of the ear most easily.

If another person isworking with you it isrelatively easy to find thepoints but doing this yourselfrequires some feeling aroundwith your fingers. Your Acu-Ki has no sense of feeling so itis best to feel with your fingersfor the ear point. When youhave found the approximateear point, place the sharp endof the Acu-Ki against the ear.You can hold the tool in thesame hand while you feel inthe ear with your index fingerfor the place that correspondsto your picture. Then move thetool onto the correct spotlooking for the sensitive place.The pictures only give you thegeneral area where you findthe sore point.

The Happy-Feet has thesharpest point designedspecifically for the ear. It isabout one-sixteenth of an inchin diameter. When youminiaturize your body down tothe size of the ear, some of theparts are no larger than the

head of a pin so you need a sharp point to get accurate stimulation.When you are putting pressure on some of the ridges of the

ear it is hard to keep your tool from slipping off the edge. This isdone easily by holding your finger right next to the point of the tool.In this way your finger is against the ear right next to the point of thetool which keeps it from slippingoff the ear point.

These pictures show youhow to hold the Acu-Ki for working on the ear. The first method putspressure directly on the ear. The other picture shows how you can useyour thumb to get more control. The thumb is placed behind the pointon the ear you want to treat. Then you place the Acu-Ki on the earand put pressure between the thumb and your Acu-Ki. When lookingfor the sorest point on the ear, first find the general area that relatesto your problem. Now move your Acu-Ki around the spot whileapplying gentle pressure between your thumb and the Acu-Ki. Dothe same on the back of the ear which matches the sore point foundon the front. Sometimes it is easier to work the sore points on theback of the ear for neck and spine problems because of the naturalgroove formed there which helps keep the Acu-Ki in place.

When you find the area that is very sensitive (sometimes thisfeels like a sharp needle), hold deeper pressure on that point for 1-2minutes. Research has determined that it takes about 25 seconds toget a full Healing Response so if you are short of time do at least 30seconds. Use as much pressure as you can take, but not so much thatyou do not do it. Doing it lightly for longer periods of time may work

just as well. If it is very sensitive, hold on the point with lightpressure. Do not move the Acu-Ki around as you apply deeppressure, because the skin of the ear is very soft and can tear.

After a bit, as the endorphins kill the pain in that area of theear (this also will happen for the area you are treating), it will becomeless sensitive. Move the Acu-Ki just a bit and you'll find other areasthat are sore next to the first point. Stimulate them also. Do this 1-2minutes on each point or until the pain in the corresponding body partlessens or goes away. Sometimes you will need to work a couple ofplaces to see which area gives you the best results, e.g., the knee jointand knee are in slightly different places on the ear.

If you are working on a condition that you have had for a longtime or if it seems like it is not improving, use the point on the backof the ear that corresponds to the same part of the body found on thefront of the ear. These points on the back deal with the underlying

cause or long-standing pain(the motor neuron aspects ofmuscular spasm). So acombination of front andback ear points may workbetter for some conditions.Working with the ear(Auriculotherapy) is a veryeffective method of creatinga healing response in thebody.

There are ten pointson the ear that are consideredto be master points. They arecalled for in many of yourformulas. When using the earpoints in the formulas, youwill find them listed byimportance so start with thefirst points and work throughthe list. The master points are

usually used after the major points for a condition are stimulated.They are more general points and treat more general conditions. ThePrimary Master Points (Point Zero, Shen Men, Autonomic Point,Thalamus Point, and Endocrine Point should also be learned by heartas your other listing of important acu-points. They are typicallyactive (sore to touch) in most patients and are used in almost alltreatment plans for alleviating many health disorders.

To give you an idea on how important these points are, hereis a description from Oleson’s book 29 for point Zero. “Point Zerobrings the whole body towards a general homeostatic balance,producing a balance of energy, a balance of hormones, and a balanceof brain activity. It supports the actions of other auricular points andreturns the body to the idealized state which was present in thewomb.”

In the index the ear points are listed by their name and by thezone so that you can find them in the charts is this book. The nameis listed so that other practitioners will know the name of the pointbeing recommended rather than just the zone part of the ear. Somebooks will just list the name of the point recommended and then youhave to find that point on the ear. To make it easy to use these chartsyou may find it easier to photocopy the pictures.

Some of the original work by Oleson focused on diagnosingpathology by measuring sensitivity of the ear points. As we havestated in other parts of the book “If there is no pathology in a givenarea of the body, there will be no active point which corresponds tothat area of the body.” The ear is one of your best micro-systems fordoing your own diagnosing of a problem. It is best to work with eachof the micro-systems to confirm what you find on each one. If I finda sore point on the ear, indicating I have a stomach problem, I lookfor soreness on the stomach point on the feet and hands to confirmthis analysis.

A lady came to me saying she thought she had a kidneyproblem because of where she was sore on her back. I first tested thesoreness of the points on her ear for the place on her back that wassore. The ear point was not sore for her back. Then we found thepoint for her kidney and that was also not sore. Then we tested the

point on her ear for the intestines and it was extremely sore. I askedher if she had any digestive problems and she said she was havingdifficulties in that area.

Then we followed up with the corresponding points in herhands and feet and we found soreness there that corresponded to theintestines. Since the foot is a larger system than the ear we were ableto pinpoint that the problem was in the transverse colon by theextreme sore point found there.

PART FIVE -- MACRO SYSTEM DETAILS

Macro-Acupressure

Acupressure has been used effectively for a wide range ofsymptoms and conditions. This next section brings togetherrecommendations from hundreds of practitioners on possible areasthat acupressure may apply. Points in the Macro-Acupressure Systemare found all over the larger part of the body.

My search for this information began because people werespontaneously getting healed with the Stressaway. I developed thenew tools and people asked where to press for results. I begancollecting lists of symptoms and acupressure points. Whenever Ifound a different source of points, they usually had new points forsimilar conditions and sometimes new conditions. Over the lasttwenty years this database has grown. Acupuncture points andacupressure points are the same. Therefore when we find suggestionsin the literature for using specific acupuncture points, they can beused for acupressure.

In this index I emphasize Primary points used by more thantwo hundred and fifty acupuncture authorities. Master acupuncturistsagree that certain Primary points are the most important points forthat condition. The points listed after a condition are usually referredto as the formula, recipes or prescription for that condition. Thetreatment of symptoms using specific points in a formula is calledtreatment by formula. Treatment by diagnosis is much morecomplicated and will not be covered is this text.

Points are emphasized in bold within a specific formula ifprimary and secondary points are mixed. If all the points are inregular type within a formula, these are all primary points. Pointswith a parenthesis around them refer to points on the ear. When thereare ear points available for a condition in the Index you will see -EAR: - in front of these points. You need to go to the Micro-systemssection for the ear to determine where those points are located. (pages97 and 98) When the Index only identifies regular Macro-systempoints for a disease or organ dysfunction, you will want to identify

what organ system is affected. Then use the Micro-systems of the ear,hand and foot that relate to that problem. Remember you get the bestresults by mixing the stimulation of points on the four differentsystems. (i.e., ear, hand, foot and body acu-points) Again, if you findresults with using just a few points stay with those points that areworking for you.

You may wish to copy pages of the book that have thegraphical descriptions of the different systems. No permission isneeded to copy these pages because permission is hereby granted.Copying any other page without permission is a violation ofcopyright.

Write the formula for the condition on a 3 x 5 card. Then findthe picture of each point and its description listed alphabetically inthe next section. Once you do this a few times for any specificcondition you will know where the points are and will only need torefer to your card. Then you will learn them by heart and can do themeasily whenever you have time without having to refer to the card.Each person is different so some may get results by pressing just afew points while others may need six to twelve treatments to see anyresults. The points that are the most tender will produce the besttherapeutic responses. Use these most often but when treatments arefrequent it is best to alternate points.

Points are listed in alphabetical order. If you study the MostImportant Points in Appendix B, you will have a better feel for whatpoints to start treating when there are a lot of points for yourcondition. These points are easy to get to and I have included adetailed picture. Work with the easy-to-find points that are sorestfirst. Then if you are not getting results expand to the points that areharder to find and get to. If you are still not getting good results thereare more points that you can get with the Computer Analysis. Each bilateral meridian system is identified with an organ ofthe body and the points are used to identify which acupressure pointon that system relates to your condition. The organs are abbreviatedwith one or two letters to simplify recognition. For example theletters GB refers to the Gall Bladder Meridian which is associated

with that particular line of energy. Two meridians midline to the bodyare referred to as Central going up the front of the body andGoverning, going up the back of the body. Our pictures have pulledthe best illustrations from the literature and in some instances thepoints are too complicated to make all the points the same. So, as inthe literature there are some differences. The lung meridian isabbreviated by L and Lu. The Pericardian is referred to as P and CX.The Stomach meridian is referred to as S and St. The Urinary Bladderis referred to as UB and B. So, if you ever come across a point youcan’t find remember some of them are abbreviated.

For our practical purposes here, these lines do not relate to thespecific organ they are named after. So you can remove the gallbladder and it will not affect the working of the gall bladdermeridian. Also the points on the gall bladder meridian are useful fortreating a variety of medical problems which seem unrelated to it.They are given the organ names because of the long tradition of usingthese names for different lines of energy in the body. There are manydifferent names for each energy line but we use ones that are fairlycommon and easy to use. The numbers on each meridian then helpyou identify where the point is on that meridian. Their main functionfor us is to help identify how to find a particular point. The full namefor each system is found next to the pictures of the meridian.

When the points are alphabetically listed in a formula, thereis no important sequence for stimulating the points. When they arenot listed alphabetically, the points are listed in the order of theirimportance, e.g., headaches below. Although GB20 is one of yourmost important points for headaches, we stimulate the other threepoints first because they will sedate the area around GB20 giving youbetter results when you finally do activate GB20.

The first time I was introduced to this system was when I wasseeing a chiropractor that was teaching the “Touch for Health30”system which uses these meridians. He was running his hand over mybody several inches away from it. When I asked what he was doing,he told me he was moving energy through the meridians with hishands. He didn’t have to be touching the body because the energy inhis hands would go to the points and move the energy along the

meridian. By speeding up the energy flow or slowing it down hewould make different muscle systems weak or strong.

He said that he could do this from across the room. This wasone of the techniques used by Japanese martial arts masters. Theywill move their hands in a manner that will block the energy on ameridian which will weaken a specific muscle system. Then theyattack in a manner that takes advantage of this weakness. When yousee their weird hand motions, they are trying to work these channelsof their opponent.

I also found that when I began working these meridians, somepeople are very sensitive and able to feel the energy flow along thesemeridians when you stimulate specific points. Working with sensitivepeople who could feel the energy lines was probably one wayMasters learned how the energy moved along certain lines. Somehighly-skilled Masters can also see the energy lines flow and can tellwhere there are problems just by viewing a person.

One system of working with these meridians focuses onvisualizing the energy flowing along the meridians until you can feelit flowing. This is an indication that the energy is flowing correctlyand balanced.31

Although there are more than a thousand acupoints, some areused more often than others (only 361 listed here). A few importantpoints that relate to the ten conditions most reported as problems inour research surveys and points that are used more often than othersare listed here. Our research cited in this book concluded that thesepoints on the Macro-Acupuncture System (plus the points on the ear,hand and foot) reduced 78 percent of the pain in our researchpopulation. Also listed here is one of the most important formulas forenergy and body health. More detailed pictures for finding thesepoints are found here because they deserve closer study. If you wantto become more proficient with acupressure these points should bememorized by heart plus the additional important points detailed inAppendix B.

Appendix ATonification and Sedation

The following quote is taken from Acupuncture With YourFingers by Ralph Alan Dale32 in the section “Regulating thepressure.” Some points are repetitions from other parts of this bookbut it was felt important to give the whole description so it would bein context. I left out any reference to tonification and sedation fromthe first edition of this book because it makes things morecomplicated and one of the goals of Stressaway Acupressure is tosimplify the process. This information is referring to the regular bodypoints. There are differences of opinions about how much pressureand how long to hold the points for each system.

“The amount of pressure used depends on the musculature ofthe person being treated and upon that persons’ sensitivity. Someonewho is lightweight and delicate should receive much less pressurethan a heavy, muscular person. An ailing person whose reflexes aresensitive and painful should receive much less pressure than a morehealthy person whose reflexes are not so sensitive.” (Note I have seenthis many times. Sometimes all you need to do is gently hold thepoints to get a healing response.)

“If you are applying the pressure to someone else, watch theperson’s facial expressions for clues about the level of discomfort.However, some people react stoically to pain and try not to show it.Therefore, always begin by asking the person you are treating to tellyou when there is discomfort.

Hold the appropriate amount of pressure until the receiversays that the pain has decreased or disappeared at the healing pointyou are pressing. That is a signal that the treatment is over. Thepressure should usually not be held for more than half a minute.

Usually, if pain is being treated, the pain in the affected partof the body will also have dissipated or diminished when the pain atthe healing point has subsided.

The amount and quality of stimulation that is used alsodepends upon whether energy (note: in the meridian system) needsto be increased or decreased. When pain is being treated, a sedatingeffect is required. When there is low energy or decreased function of

an organ, then tonifying (increasing energy) is called for. Sedating anexcess condition requires more stimulation than tonifying a deficientcondition. There are three variables in regard to tonification andsedation techniques: length of treatment, character of pressure, andbreathing.

The length of treatment for sedation needs to be longer thanfor tonification. The character of pressure for sedation needs to befirmer, more rapid, and more vigorous than for tonification. Lastly,breathing for sedation should be long on the breath out while fortonification the long breath should be on the breath in.

There are three reasons to do the breathing: (1) Deepbreathing will permit a deeper pressure without as much pain. (2) Thebody is energized in breathing. Yoga recognizes this energizingcharacter of the breath with the concept of pranayama, the taking inof vital energy through the breath. This energy is more than the mereoxygen intake that Western science observes in the breathing process.

Pranayama has an ultimate relationship with the energy thatacupressure normalizes. Appropriate deep breathing will increase theeffectiveness of acupressure. (3) When one person is treating another,the one being treated should not lapse into a passive frame of mind,but should rather be mentally and emotionally involved in theprocess. Breathing is one way of inviting the active participation ofthe person being treated. This expression of commitment to healoneself can become translated into the subtle triggering of theautonomic nervous system to engage the healing mechanisms of thebody. It is, after all, the autonomic nervous system and not the fingerpressure which ultimately does the work.

Auricular diagnosis is mostly used for detection of activepoints on the ear which need to be treated, rather than as a primarymeans of diagnosing a patient. Nonetheless, findings from auriculardiagnosis can reveal a clinical problem missed by other medicalexamination procedures, or verify a problem only suspected fromother diagnostic tests.

At the 1995 international symposium on auricular medicinein Beijing, China, several scientific studies indicated that auriculardiagnosis has been used to detect malignant tumors, coronary heartdisease, and pulmonary tuberculosis. One study found that 36 of 79cases of colon cancer showed dark red capillaries in the superiorconcha, and 16 of 31 cases of uterine cancer showed spotteddepressions in the internal genitals area of the concha wall. No suchchanges in the color or the morphology of corresponding ear pointswere shown in normal control subjects. Another investigation showedthat 116 patients out of 1,263 hospitalized patients had reactive liverpoints on the ear. Further examination of these 116 patients revealed80 cases of hepatitis. Still another study found that of 84 casesdiagnosed with ultrasound to have gall bladder disease, 81% showeda dark red region in the gall bladder area of the auricle. In 93% of 110cases of chronic gastritis, the stomach and duodenum auricularregions appeared white, shiny, and bulgy when there was no acuteinfection, but deep red when there was infection. The results of usingpressure or electronic detection were almost the same.

Brief History of Stressaway Acupressure Tool Development

The first relief that I was able to get for myself, withoutrequiring another person to work on me, came about by using asystem called, “Touch for Health”.33 There are neuro-lymphaticrelease points for each muscle of the body which when activatedhelps drain the plugged up lymphatic system connected to thatmuscle. John Thie claimed that when muscles went into spasms overtime toxins built up in those muscles because they were so tight thelymphatic system could not drain off these metabolic poisons.Pressure on the point related to different muscles helped drain thepoison from that muscle system and thereby relieved the pain. Musclespasm sometimes would last for months from my condition ofspondylitis. Massaging these points helped but they were sometimeshard to get to because they were on my back. I would use all kinds ofthings to get pressure on the back. The last one that seemed to workwas a wig stand that I would place between me and a wall and thenrub against it like a cow on a fence post. Not very ingenious but itworked. This gave me motivation to find something that workedbetter.

There were four separate events that led up to thedevelopment of the Stressaway Massager. First, during the time I wassearching for my own healing, I spent five years listening to my innerguidance and kind of living off the land so I became a kind of pack-rat. When I finished that quest and got married I moved to Houston,Texas. I was working for Burger King Restaurants and they had a toygive-away promotion of small plastic balls that were weighted on oneside and you could roll it and it went in fun directions. The managersaid to throw the left-over balls away when the promotion was over.Well, there were four thousand of those balls and I knew I could usethem for something so I took them home. I put strings on them andthe kids would drag them around the house as the cats chased themor we would spin in circles with these balls while the cats chased theballs. They were fun and the pack rat was still functioning well.

Secondly, I had found some old wine racks behind a local

Safeway store. They had this wonderful plywood shelving that Iknew would make good bookcases. I picked up the shelves for theplywood not knowing that the 1ft. by 3/4" oak wine bottle separatorswould be the most important piece. My in-laws were helping us liveclose to them in an exclusive country club setting outside of Houston.They bought the house and I made the mortgage payments. Therewere lots of raised eyebrows when I brought these shelves homestacked on top of my car along the golf course. But this is how I am,the pack-rat.

Next I was in the local health food store and I saw a newmassager that had balls on the end of a handle. It was called a Body-Buddy. It was nice but it seemed like a lot of money ($7.95) so I letit go since I had these mortgage payments and three kids to take careof.

The last event that triggered the connection was a traffic jamon the Houston freeway coming home from work. One of the thingsI learned while I was on the Healing Quest was to chant when I hadtime. So while I was stuck on the freeway I began chanting a simplechant, “I am accomplishing my highest goals.” Somewhere afterabout 15 minutes in the middle of the chant I suddenly realized Icould take the balls and attach them to the end of the oak pieces ofthe wine racks. I could drill holes in the balls and simply put a nailthru the ball into the wood. Once I got home and saw it worked Icounted the oak pieces and found I had about two thousand handles.Just enough to match the four thousand plastic balls.

The Stressaway Massager worked for muscle spasms in myback by allowing me to reach those hard-to-get-to places. My friendsliked the way it felt and soon there was a large demand for them. Isold them for a dollar each. When they were gone, I started lookingfor more balls and found that plastic balls in quantity required a largeinvestment which I didn’t have. My sister, who was a physicaltherapist, recommended that I make the handles longer and round.My uncle sent me some sample massagers made out of wood whichhe was working with at the time. I called the Body-Buddy peopleasking them if they could make a massager with a longer, roundhandle and they said they were not interested. I tried to get local

wood crafters to make a massager but the best price I could get wasabout $8.

I had never done any woodwork before but I saw an add fora Shopsmith which has a combination of all the tools I would need.I borrowed money from Sig Paulson, my father in-law and set upshop in my garage. Eventually I got so I could turn a handle in aboutthree minutes so it worked pretty well.

When people said their headaches went away I realized thatacupressure points were being stimulated and that I could get betterresults if I changed the handle design so pressure could be put onspecific acupressure points. The sharp roundedness that I put on theend also made it easier to hold the tool when using it on the back. Ifyou don’t hold the tool correctly, it had a tendency to slip on slickwalls.

After a while I noticed several people had difficultiescoordinating the movements of massaging themselves against a walland I began looking for a way to do this better. I hung the massageron a wall with all kinds of different devices but nothing seemed towork very well. After about a year of trying to figure out how to dothis I was at a health conference when someone who had purchasedthe massager said jokingly “Now if I want to do this on myself, all Ihave to do is drill a hole in my wall. Then I can put the handle in it,right?” A lightbulb went off in my head that said, “That’s it. I candrill holes in a piece of wood and attach it to a wall.” So the Back-Eze was born.

I tried a number of designs and models until I came up withthe current one. One of the difficulties with the Back-Eze was that thesmall dowels used on the massager broke because you could put morepressure on the back with the Back-Eze. I ended up using a muchlarger dowel. This larger dowel means that one can put deep, softpressure of fifty or sixty pounds on the back which gives excellentpressure on the acupoints, the neuro-lymphatic points and the muscletissues of the back.

I began studying acupressure and acupuncture so I could givepeople more information on how to use the Stressaway forstimulating acupressure points. After going to a number of courses I

decided I needed to get more support and endorsement from someonewho was an expert in the field. After sending out a number ofrequests to nationally-known acupuncturists I decided to attend atraining by Ralph Alan Dale to learn more about acupuncture andmaybe become certified. While at his course, we talked about how Imight increase the effectiveness of my tools. He recommendeddesigning a completely different tool that had sharper points on theend. He said there wasn’t a good, small, wooden tool on the marketfor stimulating the points.

I didn’t want to change the massager but had been thinking ofadding a foot massager to my line so I thought maybe I can put thosepoints onto the ends of a foot massager. When I was designing thenew foot massager, I figured out the type of rolling curve (similar tothe Ma-Roller but smaller) that I wanted but I had to experiment withthe types of points to use on the ends. Since the tool was eight inchesin length it was very difficult to make the whole piece each time. Iwanted to experiment with the ends, so I made a shorter piece to tryout different kinds of ends. When I finally got the ends like I thoughtmight work I took it to my wife to check out. I told her, “This is notthe tool but it shows you how the ends would match with the rollerand that the final piece would be eight inches long rather than threeinches.” She said, “This is a great tool.” I corrected her again saying,“This is just a working model, the finished foot massager will belonger.” She insisted again, “No, this is a great tool as it is.”Serendipity. And the Acu-Ki was born. At that time I made the endsof the Happy-Feet and the Acu-Ki the same.

The Stressaway Massager sold very well at first. At one timeI had thirty-five people making them for 450 different stores. The lastChristmas that I was very big with them I had close to 1200 peopledemonstrating across the country. After about three years there wereeighteen different companies making different versions of themassager. The market was flooded and my company sank. I had lotsof inventory left and sold the items on an individual basis while doingother things to support myself. Since 1987 I have worked full timeteaching acupressure and developing different parts of a morecomprehensive program.

Years later after I started noticing the very positive results ofworking with Auriculotherapy. I changed the ends of the Happy-Feet,making it sharper on one end, so that it could more effectivelystimulate the points of the ear. Some of the body points on the ear areno larger than the head of a pin and you need a sharp point tostimulate them. I made the other end duller for deep tissue work. Thisgave me four different points on the two tools. I also sharpened therolling curve on the Happy-Feet so that I ended up with two differenttypes of rollers. The most recent model of the Acu-Ki is somewhatsharper also so that it can give better penetration of the ear acupoints.

There are about one hundred wooden pallets in my yard thatare made of very nice hardwoods. The old pack rat is at it again andI still have my old Shopsmith. I don’t like to see items destroyed thatcan be used again. I am working on new designs for the tools thatmay take advantage of wood that I can recycle and that reflects someof the recent things I have learned on using these tools. I collected about 400 testimonials before I realized that I didn’t needany more. Most people got the same results. These are a few from theresearch where I documented the results everyone had. DreamsThis series of dreams and events committed me to the work

of developing the Stressaway Acupressure Program. At the time Iwas considering going into some other type of work because of theamount of travel I had to do to effectively market the program. I waslooking for some kind of direction. A friend of mine wanted to visitColorado so I offered to go with her. The night before we left Imeditated on my logo pendant held in the palm of my hand. Tryingto remember that you are dreaming by focusing on your hand is adream method of Dan Juan. The Dream before going to Colorado inJuly of 1990 was as follows: There was an old Indian giving sometype of lesson calling for the people in the class to understand the oldways. No one could understand his language but I did. I told him Icould understand what he was saying and that I wanted to learn theold ways. He told me that I was a warrior again. I was immediatelywearing my old flowing uniform and I could feel youthful strengthand former power returning. I actually got up from the class and didTai Chi-like exercises down a stream. I told Judy I was following mydream. ...... The dream then became very vivid and a wise one cameby and said, “Remember this dream. In your trip ahead you willremember your life work. Much will come to you that you haveforgotten. You were a Pawnee and you will meet your brother, alsocalled Silica."

The trip was for two weeks. The first ten days we werevisiting the places my friend wanted to visit. It was her vacation andI was just along for the ride so we were doing the things she wasexcited about. About the tenth day I said I wanted to spend a daymeditating in this beautiful meadow while she was doing some otherthings. While taking a walk along a small river, I saw a knife lying inmy path. It was a Swiss army knife with a wrench on one end. As Ireached down words came, “Don’t worry about the size of yourmission, you will get help along the way.” I was wondering what thiswas all about. My friend had seen everything she wanted to see andasked me if I wanted to see anything. I said there were two buttes thatI saw on one of the maps that had pulled me to them, when I first sawthem but I didn’t know where they were. We found the map with the

picture and their name was “The Pawnee Buttes.” It was a long wayfrom where we were but it definitely related to something I wassupposed to learn about from my dream. When we got there we foundthe buttes were also known as brothers and they were made of silica(sand).

Nothing else that we discovered by the buttes related to thedream. The trip did though take us up to the northern part of theColorado where we came home on a different freeway throughNebraska. Traveling on the freeway is sometimes not veryinteresting. One morning some little inner voice in me said, “Let’stravel across country instead of just using the freeway. It would bemore interesting.” So on the next turnoff I headed across Nebraska onthe back roads. Six hours later toward evening there was a small roadsign that said, “Pawnee Village.” I turned around and followed theroad up to what was a monument and museum of the NationalHeadquarters of the Pawnee Nation.

We camped there for the evening, since it was closed. Whilethere, I was trying to meditate, hoping for some insights, but I couldhear thunder and lightning all around me, so I got up and walkedaway from the museum. Overhead and surrounding the monumentwas the most beautiful Rainbow that I had ever seen. It wascompletely double and it touched the earth on both sides of themonument. I was in the middle of a beautiful golden sunset with largebillowing clouds all around. It was spectacular but I still had no ideahow it would relate to my dream.

Interesting visit, but when I got home I had no idea what Iwas supposed to have remembered about my life’s work while on thetrip and I kind of let it drop as another one of those interestingmysteries. A few weeks later while I was reading a Greenpeacemagazine, I came across an article about the boat the organizationused to protest nuclear testing in the Pacific. It was called the“Rainbow Warrior” after an old Indian legend that said when theearth was about ready to be destroyed by pollution there would bea group of Indians who would come back with the mission to healthe earth and they would be known as the Rainbow Warriorsbecause of their many colors. That got my attention. On my trip I was

to learn my mission. I was made a warrior by the shaman in mydream and the highlight of my trip was the rainbow surrounding thePawnee village. There was even the warning not to be afraid of thesize of the mission because they knew I would balk. I cried when Iread that article.

As a matter of fact, for a while I took it as an interesting eventbut hardly practical. What did I know about healing the earth? Ashort time later, a friend of mine put on a workshop on how toconnect with your inner child that I attended. At the very end, toconsolidate everything we had learned, we did an exercise where thelast question we asked our inner child was, “What is my mission?” Iwasn’t expecting the question again, but there was no hesitation frommy inner child about what he wanted me to do. Of course, I got animmediate answer from my inner child that I was to heal the earth.

So I began putting a lot more time into working with a localenvironmental group. After a couple of years working in severalsituations to help heal the planet I realized that it was kind of a losingbattle. I also ran out of money and started selling the acupressuretools again and writing a book on how to use the tools. As I asked formore help on how to be effective in “healing the earth,” I got a dreamthat made things clearer. I was in the semi-dream state early in themorning when the words came, “to heal the earth, you must emptythe hospitals.”

Still pretty general but I then knew what I was supposed to doand I also knew why I had to suffer as much pain as I had. To learnhow to manage pain I had to heal my own first. Without these dreamsI probably would not have stayed with this program because thestruggles of developing something as different as acupressure havebeen trying, to say the least. I know the program works. How to getmore people using it is now my task. I also think that my mission isprobably everyone’s. If we destroy the planet, we will have no placeto live. It is our home. As we heal ourselves we heal the planetbecause we are a hologram of the whole.

Appendix H

Neuro-lymphatic massage points

While the blood stream operates under pressure, up and down in aclosed circuit, the lymphatic system flows only in one direction. Thelymph eventually comes to the neck region and from there emptiesinto veins leading to the heart. The lymphatics act as a drainagesystem of the body, and lymph also carries proteins, hormones, andfats to all the cells. It produces antibodies within the body and makesone quarter of the white blood cells. There are twice as many lymphvessels and lymph as there are blood vessels and blood in the body.

The energy of the lymphatic system is regulated by what we callneuro-lymphatic reflexes, located mainly on the chest and back.These reflex points act like circuit breakers or switches that getturned off when the system is overloaded. The location of the reflexpoints does not seem to correspond to the positions of the lymphglands, but they are related. The neuro-lymphatic points vary in sizefrom a little pellet to a small bean, and they occur either alone or ingroups, sometimes scattered over an entire muscle. Some arepalpable, can be felt, and others are not. They are usually tenderspots, and the tenderness is usually greater in the front of the bodythan in the back. The reflexes or areas which are found to be themost sore seem to be the ones in greatest need of massage.

To work on the neuro-lymphatic reflexes for a muscle that is sore orweak, find the points on the body that are shown for that muscletreatment. Figure 1 shows all the muscles and neuro-lymphaticpoints. Find the name of the muscle that you want to treat. Next findthat muscle on Table 1 and identify the neuro-lymphatic pointsassociated with it. Then come back to Figure 1 to find the locationof the neuro-lymphatic point. These points are numbered and havea dotted line indicating the location of the point. A more detailedexplanation of how to find each point is found on Table 2. Thesecharts show the general area where the points are located. When you

find the sore place you will be on the right spot. Move around thepoint with the fingers or your massager using a deep massage, andhold this pressure for 20 to 30 seconds. The amount of tenderness canbe an indication of the extent of the problem. But it is important thatif the person being treated becomes too uncomfortable and wishes tostop, his judgment be respected. The tenderness will decrease astreatment progresses over several days. Once the reflexes have beenturned on in this way, the blockage in the energy of the lymph flowto the organ and muscle is relieved, and the muscle will haveimproved in strength and much of the pain will disappear.
