SPRINGVILLE HAS TWO TEAMS IN METRO FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Time is running out if you wish to catch these Springville youngsters showing their skills. Saturday morning will be the last day of games as baseball season approaches. You can put off cleaning out that garage for one more week can’t you? Games start at 10am. Bring a swivel seat so you can catch action on all 4 fields!

Springville Dads Joe Heyer and Beau Zaruba are coaching a group of elementary boys who play flag football on Sunday’s in the Metro Youth Football league. After two weeks, the “Arizona Wildcats” have won their first game and tied this past Sunday. Players are as follows: Gabe Dlouhy, Travis Evens, Grant Gloeckner, Tommy Hagensick, Dalton Hawker, Jake Heyer, Jack Hoogland, Alex Koppes, Kyle Koppes, Tanner Malanaphy, Dakota Seastrom, Bryce Wilson and Cade Zaruba. Jeff Menster is also coaching a flag football team made up of Springville and area kids. His “Michigan Woverines”

are 2-0 and the kids on his roster are as follows: Levi Beck, Drew Feltes, Ayden Gralund, Lukas Gralund, Cole Hileg, Nia Howard, Luke Jordan, Tristan Malanaphy, Logan Mason, Luke Menster, AJ Unash, Rhenden Wagaman, Jacob Waltz, Lauren Wilson and Ashlynne Zaruba.

7TH GRADE SOFTBALL TEAM GETS A TASTE OF ASA BALL

A team of middle school O’s traveled to Pleasantville last Saturday for a Round Robin tournament. The girls played four games against Pella, Knoxville, Pleasantville and Central Iowa Outlaws. This experience gave the Little O’s a taste of that next level as they prepare for a middle school season that is just around the corner.

The Seventh and Eighth grade, Oriole boys and girls track squads brought home some significant ribbons after a dominating afternoon at Edgewood Colesburg. All the kids continue to shorten their times and increase their

distances as Coaches Abel and Baumann have them moving toward continuous improvement. Top finishers in field events on the girls side include Ashley Bell who won the shot put, Nichole Miller who won the discus and Chrissy Hoogland who won the long jump. On the oval, 7th grader Katelyn Gloeckner took 2nd place in the 800 and the 1500. Team mate Olivia Dlouhy took 3rd in the 800 and Hoogland finished 2nd in the 100 meter dash. Hallie Corum too had a good afternoon, she took 2nd in the 1500 and 3rd in the 800. The boys really strutted their stuff and finished with a total of 24 top three finishes and were led by Seth

Blake, a 7th grader who took the 100, the 200 and the shot put by a wide margin. Sam Lorimer

also earned 1st in the 800 as well as 2nd in the 1600 behind team mate PJ Gorman who finished 1st. Austin Kirchman finished 2nd in the 800, Nick Stuppi took 2nd in the 400 and Andy Hagensick finished 2nd in the High Jump and 3rd in the 800. Braden Oxley threw for 2nd place in the shot put, Brady Barner finished 3rd in the long jump, while Jon Evens finished 3rd in both the shot and the discus. And 8th grader Max Boland took 3rd in the discus. Not a bad afternoon, I can only imagine how nice it was to hear Springville announced as a winner—repeatedly.

SENIOR “O” Oriole Pride feature’s a senior athlete in an effort to learn a little more than their jersey number and the position they play. This week we feature Springville senior Mikkel Jensen.

Where were you born? I was born in Bærum, Norway. It is about 30 minutes north of Oslo, the capitol of Norway! How many brothers and sisters? I have a sister, and unfortunately, I am the youngest, with all the pros and cons that comes with that. Parents names: Trine Lise Jensen and Stein Håvard Amundsen. My host parents are Georgeanne Cassidy-Wescott and Alan Cassidy-Wescott. Sports and activities you participate in: Here in Springville I've played football, basketball, I'm currently doing track and will play baseball when the season starts. What are some differences between Springville and "home"? Obviously the culture! But also when it comes to size; Springville is a really small place, while I normally have a lot more people around me. I love Springville though! Favorite food: My favorite food would have to be either pizza or a good, tender steak. Favorite movie: Cinderella Man, Friday Night Lights or Into the Wild. Who do you text the most? It depends a lot on if I am having a thing with a girl at the moment. If you could invite 3 individuals to dinner - who would they be? Al Pacino, Roald Amundsen (the first man on the South Pole) and Thor Heyerdahl (ethnographer and adventurer) What is the scariest thing that has ever happened to you? The scariest thing that has ever happened to me is when I almost fell down a 60 foot cliff. What do you do to get pumped up for a game? I listen to high-energy music, degrade the opposite team mentally, and during football; think of how hard you are gonna hit the ball carrier or how hard you are going to run with the ball. If you auditioned for American Idol, what song would you sing? Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T's or my favorite Norwegian song; En Solskinnsdag by Postgirobygget (pictured below left).

“Deaf Leopards” compete in football, basketball, soccer and volleyball. Pretty savvy I would say, don’t you agree?
