DO WE DARE SAY IT? “A DYNASTY IN THE MAKING”

Trophies, titles, medals and bragging rights keep piling up for the Springville girl’s travel team. Saturday the girls warmed up at the Charity Stripe contest before dominating at the North Linn tournament. They opened with a win against Linn-Mar, 18-14. Next, they took care of Independence, 36-8, outscoring them 25-2 in the second half. That win set up a championship game with Jesup, who had previously lost only two games on the year. The Oriole’s gave them their 3rd loss, beating them 29-19 to earn them their nifty necklaces and another feather in their cap. Springville moves to 24-4 on the year with 20 games left in their travel season. Keep up the good work girls—and enjoy it. (Photo’s provided by Angie Gloeckner)

YOUTH BASKETBALL HIGH-LIGHTS... Saturday mornings are for the young, and Springville’s Youth Sports League gets the most of it. Teams were playing in the practice gym Saturday hosting teams from Mount Vernon and Lisbon. Kudos to the Youth Sport Organization as well as the kids and their families for putting in the practice time. These Little O’s will soon be Big O’s—and oh, how fun they are to watch. LADY O’S BOUNCE BACK WITH TWO WINS After falling to Cascade last Thursday, Coach Sanderson had the girls ready to play on Saturday when Cedar Valley Christian paid a visit. Springville jumped out to a 12-5 lead and didn’t look back as they beat the Huskies, 44-27. Sanderson said, “We had a nice all-around effort, especially defensively. We were able to contain CVC's leading scorer Shelby Hembera, limiting her to 9 points in the game (at least four of which came during the last few minutes when the game was decided). We had a very balanced night offensively. CJ Fitzgerald led us in scoring with 11 points to go along with 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists”. It was nice to see an aggressive press from the Lady O’s, forcing 13 turnovers in all, and the points on the other end made for a solid, team win. Freshman Maddie Wittenburg had a nice outing - #22 hauled down 10 rebounds and tossed in 6 points. Tuesday night, the girls took their 6-9 record to Central City and picked up another win, handling the Wildcats 38-20. Springville had a balanced attack with multiple players scoring—Matus and Tracy Kilburg each had 9 to lead the O’s. The big win will prepare them for a big match up—Friday will be another road game, the 16-2 North Linn Lynx await. The Lady O’s had better be ready to play—as should the fans, get your game face on.

SPRINGVILLE BOYS POUNCE ON THE WILDCATS

After a 3 game skid all of which were losses at home, Coach Merritt had to be digging deep for his pregame talk on Tuesday. Wish we had the audio because the boys basketball team owned the Central City gym last night. The Oriole’s jumped out to a 20-8 lead after 8 minutes of play & did not let up one bit, cruising to a 71-22 win. The continuous clock allowed us all to meet our curfew & get home at a decent time but who could sleep? The Oriole’s outperformed, outhustled, outrebounded & outplayed Central City on both ends of the court for the entire 32 minutes. As a team, the guys shot a blistering 62% from the floor & dished out a total of 25 assists to just 9 turnovers—9! “Tonight was a night in which we finally put together a complete effort with a strong defensive and offensive performance. Giving up 22 points speaks volumes of our defensive effort” offered Coach Merritt who added, “I'm proud of our guys and am hoping we can carry this sort of effort forward”. All of us were proud—7 players found the scoring column & senior Zach Scriver had his first double-double, the swing man tallied 10 points (2 of 3 from behind the arch) & 12 rebounds— 11

defensive and he dished out 5 assists. Junior Jake Hulett also had a double-double, 19 points (9 of 11 from the paint) & 10 boards—pretty good considering he was tallied early & often for tick-tack fouls. Elias Nissen tied his career high with a 25 point performance & added 2 more blocked shots to his resume. Freshman Greg Pauly handed out 8 assists to round out a

balanced attack that made for the best time one could have on the road against a team who I’ve said before—is “almost” as fun to beat as Alburnett. It was a great night & if you missed it? Shame on you. Things don’t ease up as the boys head to North Linn on Friday to take on a 14-1 team that beat them handily just a month ago. The O’s will need the same effort & production—a good crowd won’t hurt either. Hey student section! Keep up the good work, we’ll see you up North.

DISTRICT PAIRINGS FOR GIRLS BASKETBALL ARE OUT:

The Lady O’s will stay home for their post-season opener when they host Midland on Thursday, February 9. 7 pm is slated as tip off time. Boys pairings should be announced next week, our district appears to be favorable. Stay tuned for bracket information.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. This week we feature Freeport, Illinois—home of the Pretzels! Freeport has a German heritage & when families from Pennsylvania (where pretzels originated) moved to Freeport, they started a pretzel making factory which led to their nick name. Freeport has the traditional sports as well as swimming & diving & their colors are orange & black. Notable alumni include McKinley “Deacon” Davis who played College Basketball for the University of Iowa where he was an All-American and after graduating in 1955, went on to play for the Harlem Globetrotters. Also, Adolph Rupp coached basketball at Freeport from 1926-30 before moving on to the University of Kentucky where he of course led the Wildcats to 4 National Championships.

Legendary actor John Wayne (born in Winterset, IA) passes away from stomach cancer at the age of 72.
